With temperatures set to rise in Kent, a beach day might be the perfect way to celebrate the arrival of true 'seaside weather'
Why not pretend you're somewhere exotic with a visit to this tiny and secluded sandy cove
One visitor from the States described it as feeling "carried away to Thailand" on seeing the tantalising golden sand and blue sea of Kingsgate Bay
That might seem a little far-fetched to some
but it would be hard to beat the beauty of this bay
with its chalk cliffs curving around it and nature's own art
the archway in the chalk which is the star of photographs and paintings
It still manages to be something of a "local secret" according to one resident of Broadstairs
and is quieter than its neighbouring beaches
One reason might you can only get down there by a set of steep steps
and there are no facilities such as toilets or a kiosk
But the upside is you won't be fighting people for a patch of sand
visitors say it is around a 30-minute walk
The Environment Agency states the water quality of nearby Broadstairs and Joss Bay's
close to Kingsgate Bay in opposite directions
Testing for 2025 starts on May 1 and runs until September
One person said this about the bay on Tripadvisor: "Picturesque and safe
"There's a beautiful and much photographed natural chalk arch
They also have a kids' playground and nearby
You know that feeling when you are just carried away to Thailand or somewhere like a proper exotic holiday
that’s how I felt arriving at Kingsgate bay
Botany Bay is nice too but too busy."
A glowing review from Trevor Edwards of Broadstairs
who said: "In a resort offering an array of beautiful bays
this sandy bay is never overcrowded and offers safe bathing."
"It is overlooked by the majestic Broadstairs Castle and even has its own family pub
and the thing which truly sets it apart is the ancient and unique chalk arch
the subject of thousands of photographs and paintings."
There is plenty of opportunity for rock pooling
There are no toilets and no dedicated parking
you will have to walk along the road to reach Kingsgate Bay
you and park at the Captain Digby Pub for £10 a day
It's a great excuse to stop there for refreshments and there's a terrace overlooking the bay and castle
It has four out of five stars on Tripadvsior
It has a children's indoor and outdoor areas
There's also a separate cliff top restaurant
One recent review reads: "Absolutely lovely
Meals are great with the option of starters and dessert
There is a great choice of meals and several choices of the day which are worth looking at
Another recent one said: "We never booked
Dogs are allowed on Kingsgate Bay all year round
Thorley Taverns' Broadstairs phone number is 01843 602010

China has “enforced maritime management and exercised sovereign jurisdiction” over an uninhabited reef in the disputed South China Sea
planting the country’s flag on the tiny sand bank just kilometers from a key Philippine military outpost
Photographs released by Chinese state-run media on Saturday showed China Coast Guard officers unfurling the flag as part of an effort to effectively seize Sandy Cay reef
located in the flash point Spratly Island chain

which is home to Philippine military facilities — including a military-grade runway — and some 250 residents

SANDY — A Utah couple is being accused of money laundering and smuggling oil into the U.S
after they were arrested during a multi-state raid by U.S
were booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on Wednesday
The couple and two of his sons are being federally indicted for allegedly conspiring to smuggle 2,881 shipments of oil from Mexico that they knew were illegal
The family is accused of moving at least $300 million from Mexico to the U.S

According to a Salt Lake County database search
District Court of Utah’s detention documents allege James and Kelly Jensen
conspired to “launder proceeds from sales of illegally imported crude oil
The payments for this crude oil were directed to businesses in Mexico that operate only through the permission of Mexican criminal organization
James Jensen was aware that the payments he made were going to these Mexican criminal organizations.”
The charges state the money laundering and illegal imports began in May 2022

The couple’s arrest occurred the same day as a raid on his company, Arroyo Terminals in Rio Hondo, Texas, near the Mexican border. The raid was reported by multiple Texas news outlets, and the company’s website was privatized as of Friday
District Court ordered the Jensens to forfeit any money gained from the smuggled oil

Despite documents filed requesting James Jensen be held without bail for the possible flight risk he poses

Beijing and Manila accuse each other of illegal activities around Sandy Cay near the Spratly Isles
as joint US-Filipino military drills get under way in region
China and the Philippines have displayed their national flags in competing photo opportunities on a disputed sandbank in the South China sea
ratcheting up longstanding regional tensions between the two countries
which is part of the disputed Spratly Islands
and comes days after the US and the Philippines launched their annual joint military drills called “Balikatan”
which this year will include an integrated air and missile defence simulation for the first time
The latest confrontation appears to have emerged on Thursday, when Chinese state media reported the Coast Guard landed on the disputed reef two weeks ago
unfurled a flag and “exercised sovereign jurisdiction”

Photograph: CCTVOn Sunday, China’s coast guard then accused six Filipino personnel of “illegally boarding” Sandy Cay, which Beijing calls Tiexian Reef, earlier that day despite “warnings and dissuasion” from the Chinese side.
Spokesperson Liu Dejun said coast guard personnel then “boarded the reef and investigated and dealt with it in accordance with the law”.
“We urge the Philippines to immediately stop its infringement,” Liu said, adding that the actions “violated China’s territorial sovereignty”.

There do not appear to be any signs that China has permanently occupied the reef or has built a structure on it
On Monday Philippines officials disputed China’s claim that it had gained control
“The facts on the ground belie their statements,” National Security Council spokesperson Jonathan Malaya said
“It is not to the benefit of any nation if these things are happening
nor it is to the benefit of any nation if such irresponsible announcements and statements are released to the public and to the world.”
Chinese state broadcaster CCTV published a photograph of five black-clad people standing on the uninhabited reef as a dark inflatable boat bobbed in the nearby water
The group also “cleaned up leftover plastic bottles
wooden sticks and other debris and garbage on the reef”
Philippines Coast Guard spokesperson Jay Tarriela said on Sunday that its navy
coast guard and police personnel had deployed to Sandy Cay in four rubber boats and had “observed the illegal presence” of a Chinese Coast Guard vessel and seven China maritime militia vessels
Posting footage of their own flag being displayed
Tarriela added: “This operation reflects the unwavering dedication and commitment of the Philippine government to uphold the country’s sovereignty
sovereign rights and jurisdiction in the West Philippine Sea.”
Beijing claims sovereignty over almost all of the South China Sea and has waved away competing assertions from other countries in the region as well as an international ruling that its position has no legal basis
At the opening ceremony in Manila for the joint US-Philippines military drills
US Marine Corps Lieutenant General James Glynn said the two sides would “demonstrate not just our will to uphold our mutual defence treaty in existence since 1951 but our matchless capability to do so”
“Nothing builds bonds more quickly than shared adversity,” he said
Beijing said the military manoeuvres “undermine regional strategic stability” and accused Manila of “collusion with countries outside the region”

“We had a very strong appeal in Connecticut,” he said
expressing frustration on his Infowars show Wednesday
The Associated Press sent emails seeking comment to Jones’ lawyers Wednesday

MLB Trade Rumors
By Nick Deeds | April 17
With no end in sight to the rebuild and Alcantara controlled through the 2027 season
it would be a complete shock if the Marlins held onto him until his contract came to a close
he’s sure to be an extremely sought-after commodity
The right-hander’s 4.70 ERA in three starts this year is far from impressive
He’s generating grounders at a phenomenal 65.1% clip with a 3.86 FIP and a 3.91 xERA despite his lackluster 19% strikeout rate and 12.7% walk rate
Those strikeout and walk figures will become concerning if they hold up over a larger sample size
it seems fair to expect the righty to return to his previous dominant form
Alcantara has posted a 3.33 ERA with a 3.71 FIP
and a 21.4% strikeout rate against a 7.1% walk rate
That sort of volume would have value even if Alcantara was a league-average pitcher
given the increasing difficulty with which teams are forced to piece together their rotations
He’s also appealing from a financial point of view
He is making $17MM this year and next year
less than half of what some other ace pitchers get
Then there’s a $2MM buyout on a $21MM club option for 2027
Alcantara himself tells Jackson that he wants to stay in Miami but is aware that he has no say in the matter
they can trade me.” While the righty eventually getting moved appears to be something of a fait accompli
the Fish would still have two full seasons of team control to market if they opted to move him this offseason instead
Unless the 8-10 Marlins are able to make a surprise surge into contention for an NL Wild Card spot this summer or Alcantara’s performance declines enough that lucrative trade offers start to dry up
it’s hard to see the club getting more value out of their star by waiting for the offseason
another year of information regarding their prospects and young players could allow them to make more informed decisions about which areas of the roster to target improvements for in the return package
That would give potential suitors for Alcantara alternative options they surely wouldn’t have available to them this early in the calendar
When do MLBTR readers think the Marlins should start trying to trade Alcantara
Would jumping the market and opening up the bidding now allow them to maximize their asset
should they wait to see if Alcantara can re-establish himself more before putting him on the market this summer
or could waiting even longer to deal him this offseason be the best course to take
MLBTR Originals MLBTR Polls Miami Marlins Sandy Alcantara
Yu returns in a month and is still like 2024)
but not sure how long you depend on Hart and Vasquez and not much at all behind them right now
Someone get AJ a fresh line of the good stuff
but rotation should be okay this season even if Darvish doesn’t make it back
I’d be okay trading for him this winter if the Padres don’t resign King
Maybe he’s cheaper to obtain this Offseason
G – I suggested 5/130 on King on another post
Then the FA post popped up with some data suggesting that might be light
I would not go Salas and DeVries but pretty much the rest of the top 30 might be required
Hosmer / Cease and King salaries in 2025 all rolled together can make it work in 2026
Padres issue right now is they cleared out a lot of (IMO) marginal prospect talent in Arraez
and Scott trades last year alongside Merrill’s graduation
but most upside talent is at the lower levels
They just don’t have a lot of talent to offer that’s not far away
Maybe you could get away with just one of Salas or De Vries headlining
but it’d require the Marlins to be exceptionally high on some secondary/tertiary pieces
I don’t see the need in another starter until the fall.
if Darvish comes back and they can extend King
that’s 4 playoff-caliber starters thru 2026
He has a 4.70 ERA and is walking players at twice his career averages
They are not going to get Ace return for him
He is coming off TJ and missed time to injuries in 2018
In 2023 he only made 28 starts before the injury
His 4.19 ERA with below average SO% in 2023 before the TJ and 2025 after the TJ points to #4 starter
I assume you don’t even want your team to trade for him
He was a rookie in 2018 and threw almost 30 more innings than 2017
He was 2nd in IP behind Cole from 2019-2023
He’s even 26th in IP from 2021-2024 without a single out last year
We disagree on the definition of a workhorse
He vastly outperforms his SIERA (almost by a whole run)
but partially that’s due to his low Ks (which allows him to pitch deeper into games)
His situation is similar to Cease coming off 2023 with the added wrinkle of TJ: career year into a down season
Would you have called Cease a #4 coming off his 2023
You just said the major reason not to acquire him
ERA is not as predictive of future performance as SIERA is
So what should you expect as a ceiling going forward
The Padres acquired Cease for far less than anyone predicted precisely because of his 2023 season
Alcantara will be no different except he will cost the acquiring team much less than Cease because not only did he have a mediocre season prior to surgery
he also HAD TJ surgery and is not performing well now
Some guys are perpetual SIERA/xFIP underperformers because neither of those accounts for the quality of contact
Matt Cain’s career ERA was a half-run lower than his SIERA and xFIP
and I would expect Alcantara’s 2025 ERA to end up closer to his career ERA than his career SIERA/xFIP marks
you are either fooling yourself or unaware
Whats the cost for his blended ERA over 4.50
One yr in the past 7 yrd wins at double digits
Put him on a team link the Yankees and the guy is a big winner
I love the stat heads you come up with all these fomulas and such
The facts are these days pitchers ats 6 inning men
This is a guy that typically that can go 7-8 innings
Tossing a few less strikeouts works out fine to get more innings
These days teams are usuing 6 guys in a 9 inning game
Even a guy averaging 6-7 innings these days is not that common
straight – We have no idea how long it will take for Sandy to return to pre-TJS form
teams wouldn’t want to give up a huge haul for just 2 more years of his services
For example Buehler returned from TJS May 6th and he is still pitching like crap a year later
and his velocity is down almost 3 MPH from his peak
All the more reason for the Marlins to hold Alcantara to the deadline unless they’re blown away by an offer
He was only middle of the pack when he got hurt with a 4.14 ERA and 4.03 FIP and now he has pitched like a back of the rotation starter since coming back
Maybe if the Marlins hold him until the offseason and he can show he is actually at least back to being #3 starter quality by then
Rodon had a 2.88 ERA prior to signing for big bucks
SIERA is the best predictive pitching stat for a reason
Because the exceptions to the rule are few and far between
Right now there is one active player that used to have a low ERA despite his high SIERA
He hasn’t been able to in the last 2 seasons he has pitched in 2023 and 2025
He got absolutely destroyed today for the 2nd outing in a row
Players don’t get a return based on what they do AFTER they are traded
They get a return based on what they have done BEFORE they are traded
In his last two games including today Alcantara’s velocity is down 2+ MPH from his peak
He used to sit 98+ and now he only hit 98 twice today with his average at 96.5
Haven’t seen anything from today’s game
but you’re incorrect about his previous game (4/12 against Nats) according to Statcast: his average fastball velocity was 97.6
His average fastball velocity from 2021-2023 was 98.0
his average fastball velocity in 2025 was 97.4
I’m not going to judge a pitcher in his physical prime too harshly over a 20-inning sample size coming off of TJ
He has a career ERA of 3.34 and an “averaged” career xFIP and SIERA of 4.10
I’ll say if he stays mostly healthy this year
Let’s check back on this one at the end of the year
Average pitchers don’t get teams to give up something like what the Padres gave up for Cease
That was for the season through his 3rd start
an Ace doesn’t have a 4.14 ERA and then a 7.27 ERA the next season he pitches
They could’ve traded him without him making a start
but teams would wanna see his performance coming off TJ; they’d be handicapping their return
No point in selling low; they’ve got so much control they can see if he can’t get back to his pre-TJ performance
They would have received a bigger return if they had traded him before he pitched a game than if they trade him now
I have no faith in Miami to get quality returns for big league commodities
The marlins should roll the dice and wait at least another month or to the deadline
No reason to trade him right now when there are some questionable results so far
Though scouts likely can see if the stuff is there now and that he will bounce back
Three starts is literally nothing especially after missing a year
The workhorse part is probably not a big reason to trade for him this season
This is the type a player preller usually goes after but I don’t see it this year
If darvish is back in a month or so they really don’t need him
My guess is we could see them pick up someone for the backend of the rotation if needed
Right now left field is the Padres biggest need
I don’t see them trading neither of Salas or DeVries
Perhaps they could move Cease and then acquire him for more long term stability
He hasn’t been very good so if Preller is going to go after him
If his performance improves and he puts up an ERA in the 3s by the deadline he is going to be very expensive
With 2 full seasons of team control for just $34 million
he would be a major acquisition just a touch less expensive than Cease was to acquire
Possibly as much as 3 organizational top 30 prospects
As it is today he is returning from a major surgery with poor results out of the gate and that is after a mediocre season prior to the injury that precipitated the surgery
He would not garner the type of return most think
A couple of middle of the organizational top 30 MLB ready prospects and a lottery ticket should get it done today
Padres and AJ Preller will make a compelling offer
Preller has made at least 2 major deals with the Marlins over the last few years including landing Marlins relievers Tanner Scott and Bryan Hoeing in a six-player deal
and All Star Infielder Luis Arráez in separate deals
Salas will be the Padres starting catcher in late ’25 or early ’26
De Vries will be the Padres starting SS in late ’25 or early ’26
He needs to learn to hit before the Padres think about calling him up
Before don mattingly blew out his arm and threw away his second cy young
Naw he was throwing him 150+ pitches in games like a little leaguer
@HATE: A simple google search will tell you that the most pitches Alcantara has ever thrown in a game are the 117 he threw in a complete game vs the Yankees on 8/12/23
He also threw 115 in another complete game 0n 5/22/22
Has never come close to being forced to throw “150+ pitches in games like a little leaguer” by either Mattingly or Schumaker
Sorry the facts don’t back up your narrative
Probably went your whole life making crap up and people thought you knew what you were talking about and now they call you out every time and get their phone out to verify your stupid statements lol
No sense in trading him after TJ when results are bad you’ll be trading him at the low point of his market
Let him string a few vintage Alcantara starts together and then start talks
Every Start is a risk and if you get a good return now I would do it
If you get 95 cent on the dollar take the offer
But if you get only offered 60 or 70 cents on the dollar it would be better to wait till the deadline
So basically tell teams you can have him now but only if you are willing to really pay up
I don’t foresee a better pitcher hitting the trade market
so I’d be holding onto him until either the trade deadline or the off-season
or you wait until all 29 teams have the same record in November
Throw in another Cy Young candidate and we’ll give you Ozuna
Mozeliak should make this trade to undo his biggest blunder since ignoring Max Scherzer wanting to be a Cardinal
The whole Cards team has surprised me a bit
I think Contreras is a little overrated but think if Jordan Walker ever gets it going in the power department and if JJ Weatherholt finds some playing time
That will NEVER happen even if the Braves paid his salary
A guy who is going to be 35 and a free agent to be DH
2+ years I really don’t think the return is that different
I’d say only deal him if someone overpays for now
It’s gonna take a huge haul to get him
I don’t know if I’m comfortable giving up a package led by Anthony or Mayer
He has to actually show he is a TOR starter to get a return that includes any top 100 prospect
His 4.70 ERA and 4.7 BB/9 don’t say Ace
or do you think a few starts makes a guy a #4 or #5
Even if he is not an ace this year he will command 2 top 100 prospects and one more solid org prospect
He is 29 and under control next year with a 20 mil 2027 Club Option Teams will what that even if he is a 4 era pitcher this year which is normal in tj return
Question is what kind of top 100 prospects it will be
90 overall and a good orgs top10 guy imo it would be a decent price that a contender should pay
But maybe they ask for a top10 overall prospect which is a steep price
Meant what not what in that sentence above:)
I don’t think a top5 overall prospect is on the table
But maybe someone is willing to give a prospect from the backend of the top10
The last 2 guys I can think of traded with 2 years of control were Cease and Crochet
Cease had a 3.37 ERA in the 2 seasons prior to the trade
The White Sox got 1 back of the top 100 prospect for him
2 players at the back of the Padres top 10
Crochet had a 3.58 ERA in his only season as a starter
and Boston’s #11 and #14 prospects prior to the trade
Alcantara had a 4.14 ERA in the last season he pitched
Alcantara will not get a return even close to Crochet and the one for Cease is out of the question too unless he really picks it up between now and the deadline
Consider what they just traded for crochet who was younger cheaper with the same amount of control and not coming off major surgery
.then realize there is zero chance the marlins get a top 20 or better prospect in all mlb for sandy..especially with hows hes pitched thus far
You don’t have call waiting on your cell so you can take another call on the other line
Sure do – not sure why you ask “what century is this” like you don’t think people don’t have multi line hardwired phones in their offices or something though
It isn’t some “last century” specific term – yet anyway
I just threw a sarcastic reference back at you to make a point
someone has used the term “call waiting” from landline lingo
I have 3 separate numbers that feed into my cell phone including an 800#
Out – I can be on a call and another comes in and I can tap “hold and answer”
If that isn’t the exact same process and result as the household landline (with only one line) call waiting then I don’t know what it could be called
Peak value for top talent is always in July
The Marlins assume some risk holding onto him that long
Both Marlins fans will be disappointed either way
So far he hasn’t shown he is a top talent post-TJ
Hardly anyone bounces back from TJ that quickly
Another argument for letting him ride until July
He wasn’t great during the season before the injury
Nevertheless I agree with the premise of this article that he will be one of the hottest commodities in the trade market this summer
Feel free to explain why you believe otherwise
Does that mean he will have a lot of teams asking about him because back of the rotation starters are in high demand or does it mean he will have just a couple of teams asking about him because they think he is better than a #3
I hope this clears up any confusion you may have
They have traded every other good player they have had in the past
I’ve followed his entire career and have watched every pitch he’s thrown
He’s on the downslope and not worthy of anything more than a high AA
pitchers coming off Tommy John are not workhorses
Add in the fact that he missed time to injuries in 2018 and 2020 and definitely not a workhorse
From now to the end of the yr who will have more innings
The Dodgers would love to work it out for him
He would slot into that team as maybe the most innings from any of their starters or close to it
Who will have more innings Alcantra or Glasnow
Having a guy who can go further gives the relef squad a break
What does what a pitcher did after they signed have to do with what their value was before they signed
Snell put up a 2.25 ERA with SD and a 3.12 ERA with SF before signing his deal
He put up one of the best 2nd half in MLB history last season
That is why he was worth so much in the FA market
then got hurt and missed an entire season and now has a 4.70 ERA and got lit up in his last outing
Innings or starts do not = value without high performance.
See Patrick Corbin who never missed a start from 2021-2024 and had the 4th most starts in the game
If Alcantara had put up a low 2 or even a low 3 ERA in 2023 like Snell did in his last 2 seasons before becoming a FA you might be able to say that he had Ace upside
but he had a 4.14 ERA which was just a little better than average
With declining SO rates and increasing BB rates that is not going to entice some team to pay a huge return for him for the 2025 stretch run
He needs to prove he is better than a back of the rotation starter 1st
That is why they should hold him at least until the deadline
This season he started out ok with velocity right at his career averages
but since then he has already had to skip a start since returning this season and his velocity in his 3rd start against the Nationals
a game in which he got lit up for 4 runs in 5.2 IP
The Marlins need to hold onto him and hope that he can turn things around this season so they can get a good return for him
What else do the Padres have left to trade
If they are trading for a starter you’d have to think one of their top two prospects would have to be included
I wonder what starter the Rays are looking to trade after Joe Boyle flashed some potential
Any of the Rays top five would cost a top prospect but Littell could probably be coaxed away for less than your top two
Padres window closed two or three years ago after spending like clowns
Id say they have to either trade both of their top two prospects and go for it this season or trade both of their starters and stack some prospects for ’26
Im interested to see which and would be surprised if they didnt make any trades at all
You never know about injury or poor performance
but the Padres still have a majority of the team under contract for ’26
and King this fall while Suarez will probably opt out; along with Hosmer’s contract ending
they will have plenty of options and flexibility
The Padres have the best record in baseball
They ARE going for it and they will continue go for it for the foreseeable
They haven’t had to trade their top two prospects either and have no reason to
This is the deepest team in the franchise’s history
BOTH Peralta and Suarez would have to have exceptional seasons to opt out
Merely good would not be enough to get them more guaranteed money at 34 and 35 years old respectively
the Padres will have likely gotten to best seasons they will have in the rest of their careers at that age
I really hope they pitch well enough to opt out
that is $78.9 million coming off the payroll and will leave the Padres approximately $45.6 million below the 1st CBT before arbitration raises
With approximately $35 million in arbitration raises for 2026 if they retain everyone and Merrill’s new contract kicking in
the Padres would be right around the CBT before filling any of the holes left by those players leaving
There’s a new CBA coming in ‘26 and with the way salaries are skyrocketing the CBT will be raised without a doubt
Pads fan..i totally get your excitement..i would be excited as well but lets not forget they have not even played 20 games yet and 13 of which have come at home..over 140 to go.
Padres are certainly an interesting team as far as payroll and contracts go
It will be interesting to see how they handle the the trade deadline
because the pay increases to Machado and Tatis are approaching and they are going to bite
MLB is already saying they will lock out the players again
If the owners locked put prior to expiration they would be in breach of contract
The most likely scenario is a lockout prior to 2027 like last time i think
Mookie Betts stated that the Padres were actually a better team than the Dodgers when they met them in the playoffs last year
AJ Preller and the Padres Scouting system has been among the best in baseball at finding
drafting and signing talent both in the majors and internationally
Many who do not know the Padres knack for finding “sleeper talent” say that every time the Padres make a trade that their farm is empty?
Preller and the Padres keep trading prospects and keep quickly finding much more talent both in th4e MLB yearly drafts and in international free agent signings that every front office in MLB is interested in trading for and having on their team and/or in their farm system
SS Leo Devries just hit for the cycle this week including 2 home runs in one game
From the headline I thought he was a FA next year
They have him under contract for two and a half years!
they don’t have to immediately fire sale everyone
We can have this convo in the 26-27 off-season
The reason is that his value goes down with each passing day
Its not like he has shown he is a TOR pitcher since his return from TJ
so they need to maximize the return while teams still think he has value
They will fire sale every player who gets to arbitratation
Other players on the block as well this yr
He’s more of a CF than Ryan Kreidler
I didn’t vote because it wasn’t an option
– how the Marlins continue to do “business” today
Marlins are an embarrassment and I live in South Florida
Marlins are an embarrassment and I live 3000 miles away from them
2 World Series is more than other teams…
The Marlins should pick up his $21m ‘27 option and give him a 3yr extension with a 4th year team option
Marlins history is marred by accidentally competing amidst intentionally tanking
But Baltimore probably has the best to offer and most need
I’m all for the Tigers to acquire Sandy Alcantara while they have the current pitching staff
They’re going to waste so many runners on base with those easy double plays by their lack of speed
The pole forgot the option “before Will Warren’s next turn in the Yankees rotation.”
Povich and a toolsy low level lotto ticket like Joshua Liranzo should be enough
I thought Elias would go get Crochet or Cease this year
The Marlins pick up his ‘27 team option and sign him to an extension should of been an option to choose from as well
Marlins had money in 2012 and 2013 then traded everyone out
Not sure of any viable trade material though
Plenty of young talent percolating in Padres farm system
It’s unfortunate… Marlins never have that open window to compete but it’s not doing them any good holding on to him
They should trade and try to get an open window for competition with prospects again
The Tigers are not going to be able to sign Skubal to a long term contract
Alcantara would be somewhat close to Skubal for a lot less money
trade Flaherty…again…this year
Max Clark is not the next coming of Bryce Harper
More like a Johnny Damon (with a better arm)
I would even send Olson instead of Montero
sure would be a nice 1/2 in Miami with Meyer and Alcantara if somehow Miami keeps him around
The Fish should take whatever they can get
The Tigers don’t need him…if this is how he’s going to pitch
He has given up 11 ER over 8.2IP in his last 2 starts
Now its 16 ER given up over his last 10.2 IP
I like how some of the MLB teams have become development pipelines for the top MLB teams
Cubs dont have a single pitcher of interest in their AA/AAA in my opinion
I’ll have to take a closer look Yankees have some decent pitching prospects
He has given up 11 ER over 8.2IP in his last 2 starts and has a 7.27 ERA this season after having a 4.14 ERA in his last season before the TJ surgery
Its not going to take as much as you may be thinking to get him
One more start like tonight and the Fish will be stuck with him at least through the end of the season
Alcantara is going to get it rolling again
Plenty of good starting pitching going to be available outside of Alcantara
He keeps getting worse with each start this season
At his current pace his ERA will be over 9 by the end of his next start on Cinco De Mayo
The starting pitching was supposed to be their strength
Ramirez and Stowers look like a good start
They arent that far away from putting together a really strong team
There is a case for keeping Alcantara if the return in trade isnt superb
and that could actually be a blessing in disguise
Trade him whenever they get an offer they can’t refuse
He may not be ready to compete at an high level in ’25 and may also be on an innings limit

*Warning - contains major spoilers for the Grace season 5 finale*
The fifth season of Grace has now come to a dramatic end, and if you thought the season was done with major twists after that mind-blowing third episode
In the final moments of the fourth episode
Cassian revealed that Roy's wife Sandy's death wasn't a suicide
as it seemed in the season 4 finale - instead
the gang both Cassian and Sandy had become indebted to
that's how she'd ended up in hospital in Munich in the first place
The car accident she was in was an attempted hit
but they later finished the job and made it look like she had taken her own life
Benchdale revealed to Roy that they knew about his and Sandy's son
They considered her debt to still be unpaid
Thankfully, fans don't need to worry that this cliffhanger ending will go unresolved - Grace has already been renewed for a sixth season, to adapt more of Peter James's books
there's a chance that the show could run and run
despite the fact that it has almost already caught up with James's huge list of Roy Grace novels
Roy star John Simm was asked whether the show could go beyond the books earlier this year
we were speaking yesterday about how pleased we are that the show is kind of deviating from the books now
and it has been quietly over the last few years
Bella Moy dies quite early on in the books
and various characters are different and storylines are different
\"I quite like the fact that people that have read all the books
they get the rug pulled from under them when they think they know what's going to happen
I think we've got plenty of cases to solve.\"

HANOI: Vietnam has lodged formal protests over claims by China and the Philippines to Sandy Cay
The diplomatic row flared after Chinese state media reported its coast guard had seized control of Tiexian Reef — part of Sandy Cay — in mid-April.
Manila responded days later by releasing a photo of Filipino sailors planting a flag at the site
Vietnam’s foreign ministry said it had issued protest notes to both countries and urged “relevant parties” to avoid actions that escalate tensions.
It reaffirmed Sandy Cay as part of its territory
where the Philippines maintains a military outpost and coast guard station
Beijing claims nearly all of the South China Sea
despite a 2016 international ruling rejecting its assertions.

was truly enjoyable and our achievements together
“I’m also proud of achievements across so many areas of the sport in my five years serving the RFL Board. The changes are working and we’ve made these

Chinese media says coastguard units entered remote sandbank
I would like to be emailed about offers, events and updates from The Independent. Read our Privacy notice
China’s coastguard has seized control of a disputed reef near a key Philippine military base in the South China Sea, according to state media reports, a move that adds to rising tensions between Beijing and Manila
Photos published by Chinese media show members of the coastguard planting the national flag on Sandy Cay
The small sandbank lies close to Thitu Island
where Philippine forces have maintained a long-standing outpost
an English-language outlet run by the Chinese Communist Party
ran photographs of the operation and said it took place in mid-April
it said “exercised sovereign jurisdiction”
displayed the Chinese national flag and “cleaned up plastic bottles
They also carried out “video-recording of illegal activity” by Philippine forces
The development comes amid growing tensions between Beijing and Manila
who have blamed each other for environmental damage to disputed features across the South China Sea
Philippine officials told the Financial Times that Chinese personnel appeared to leave the reef after planting the flag
There was no indication that China had established a permanent presence or constructed facilities on the reef
which hosts a Philippine military facility and a newly inaugurated coast guard base
The Philippines has accused China of escalating maritime aggression
while Beijing continues to dismiss the allegations and assert it sweeping claim to most of the South China Sea
despite an international ruling rejecting its sweeping territorial claims
The Trump administration said reports of China seizing Sandy Cay were “deeply concerning if true”
spokesperson for the National Security Council
told the Financial Times: “Actions like these threaten regional stability and violate international law
We are consulting closely with our own partners and remain committed to a free and open Indo-Pacific.”
The incident also coincided with the ongoing "Balikatan" joint military drills between the Philippines and the United States, which Beijing has criticised as a destabilising move. The exercises run from 21 April to 9 May and were set to involve more than 14,000 Filipino and American soldiers.
China’s foreign ministry said this week that the joint exercises “undermine regional strategic stability” and accused the Philippines of “collusion with countries outside the region”.

LAS VEGAS -- Behind a relentless early offensive assault led by an active jab
Mikaela Mayer held off a late charge by rival Sandy Ryan to win a unanimous decision and retain the women's WBO welterweight title Saturday night
It was a rematch of their clash in September when Mayer won a controversial majority decision to capture the title from Ryan
The rematch was arguably more entertaining and a more definitive victory for Mayer
Two judges scored the fight 97-92 and a third had it 98-92
But the scores didn't reflect the heated fight
working behind the jab and pressing the action
Ryan (7-3-1) was more composed and patient
looking for opportunities to counter with her right hand
But Mayer's persistence forced Ryan on her back foot early and she controlled the middle rounds
"I wanted to give Sandy the rematch because it was a great fight," Mayer said
"I believe a rematch should happen when the fans want it
it's time for me to move on and go for undisputed
The feud between Mayer and Ryan had become vitriolic over the past year
they engaged in a war of words that heightened tensions when Ryan was doused with paint by an unknown assailant on her way to Madison Square Garden for their fight
Britain's Ryan blamed Mayer for the red paint attack
Mikaela Mayer poses with the title belt after beating rival Sandy Ryan on Saturday night in Las Vegas. Steve Marcus/Getty ImagesThe controversial first decision further fanned the flames of their feud
who trained Ryan for their first fight and was in the former champion's corner in the rematch
the women delivered a high-octane bout that entertained throughout at Fontainebleau
The difference was in activity; Mayer threw 131 more punches
Mayer outlanded Ryan 178 to 146 and threw 516 punches to Ryan's 377
Mayer found success working the body with 55 punches below the neck
Mayer's game plan was to overwhelm her rival with activity
which gave Ryan a window to become the aggressor
Ryan fought with urgency in the eighth round and plowed forward
The constant aggression opened a cut over Mayer's right eye after a clash of heads
The final two rounds were filled with furious exchanges
Ryan buckled Mayer's legs with a right hand
but Mayer refused to back down as the fans rose to their feet in the final seconds
"I've been needing to move to welterweight for a long time," Mayer said
it took a good solid year and a half of hard work and this is where I'm comfortable
Mayer can focus on becoming an undisputed champion
Heading into Grace season 5
the show has seen a couple of major change-ups
Not only has there been a cast change, with Craig Parkinson leaving the series
but a major storyline update at the end of season 4 has left John Simm's Roy in a very different place
Roy has been plagued by the disappearance of his wife Sandy
However, in the season 4 finale
he found out she was in a hospital in Germany
This may have seemed like the end of the Sandy mystery - however
the show's cast have now revealed that her impact will continue to be felt on the show
John Simm explained: \"I was kind of torn with it
we can't string them along forever about the Sandy thing
And it has been going on through the whole series
\"It was a kind of spectre hanging over his head
He was the detective with the missing wife
\"We can't just have a blissfully happy detective who's not an alcoholic
\"So I was kind of worried that that was going to be exposed a little bit
Glenn star Richie Campbell added: \"We’ve just gone from one frying pan into another
Cleo star Zoë Tapper said: \"I have a feeling that Sandy is always going to be there in one form or another
because he's obviously in a really traumatised state as well
and they've got a duty to him to keep her memory alive and to try and sort of guide him through that
I think maybe physically Sandy's not there
but she's certainly going to have an ongoing consequence throughout their lives
Simm concurred that \"the repercussions of what happened to Sandy do carry on\"
when we actually find out what she was involved in and the reality of the situation she was in\"
There's one of my favourite scenes I've written
Of course, when the cast talk about long-running repercussions, they don't necessarily just mean in season 5 - season 6 has already been commissioned
meaning there are plenty more cases for Roy and Glenn to solve in Brighton
Grace season 5 will air this spring with seasons 1-4 available to stream on ITVX
Grace cast say repercussions of Sandy mystery impact show for a long time"That is certainly not over
There's a lot to unravel about that."

The pristine crack of the bat on a cool autumn evening can sometimes mask the inner battles waged on the mound
In a season where the stakes couldn’t be higher
Minnesota’s roster is witnessing a striking juxtaposition as one ace readies himself to take center stage while another struggles to reclaim former glory
While Sandy Alcantara has found himself grappling with a decline in his once-formidable Cy Young form
whispers around the dugout suggest that a highly valued $73.5 million ace is primed to fill that void
quietly nurtured away from the glare of Miami’s spotlight
is now making a case that timing could be as perfect as a well-timed pitch in extra innings
An understated confidence seems to envelope this prodigy
whose focus remains unwavering despite the league’s relentless pressure
Every athlete’s journey is punctuated by both stellar highs and testing lows
a career defined by early promise now meets the harsh reality of fluctuating performance
sparking questions about maintaining elite stature
His ongoing struggle to reattain that elusive peak is a stark reminder of how even the brightest stars can face temporary eclipses
the narrative is far from one of despair; it is a testament to the enduring spirit of athletes
who continuously fight to redefine their limits amidst growing expectations
The Minnesota Twins find themselves at a pivotal crossroads as the trade deadline looms
Balancing on the fine line between nurturing potential and addressing immediate needs
they are reshaping their pitching framework with strategic precision

It took just 16 minutes for the France international to break the deadlock at the Broadfield Stadium
as she made no hesitation in crashing a volley into the top corner
It gave Seagulls goalkeeper Melina Loeck no chance
That goal was Baltimore's fourth of the season in the Women's Super League – and she has since scored her fifth with another brilliantly hit effort in our Champions League comeback against Manchester City at Stamford Bridge
Our left wing-back has been nominated for the award alongside Melvine Malard (Manchester United)
Beth Mead (Arsenal) and Shekiera Martinez (West Ham)

superbly imagined in a magical space where the impossible can actually happen
There’s a gale a’blowing outside as Storm Darragh shakes the seas (and indeed Paddington Station)
but descending in to the cosy warmth of the Puppet Theatre Barge
as we embark on a sailing trip with Captain Sandy to visit a sea monster
Anyone who knows the Barge will surely agree it is a secret
and it feels particularly so with Christmas approaching
It’s a space where magic and belief in the impossible happens
starting from when the jaunty music first begins for Captain Sandy and the Sea Monster
we find ourselves in the village of Rocky Snore
finding there are no longer enough fish in the sea for them to make a living
Rumour has it there’s a sea monster eating ALL the fish
so Sandy sets out to have a stern word with them – only to realise human behaviours have more than a little to do with the problem
some lightly challenging thinking (that never outweighs the fun) about how we look after our environment
Let’s talk about the puppets… They are breathtakingly gorgeous
their colours popping vibrantly from the darkness
and with no visible puppeteers it’s soon easy to believe they are in fact self-animated
The characters are funny and relatable as they bicker and banter
and making things worse with general thoughtlessness before finally realising how humans are responsible for their problem
While Gill and Roddy are dressed in conventional yellow sou’westers
played as a woman in what seems to be a sari
placing the tale in a culturally wider context and suggesting perhaps that it’s not just the people you’d expect who are complicit in causing damage: it could be any of us
When the stunning sea monster first appears
as the children and their families lean in
excitedly anticipating seeing the full beast
bringing lively dynamism to the world of Rocky Snore
whilst reminding its inhabitants of what it is that’s important to conserve
giving fabulously distinct characterisation to the many puppets
It is easy to forget there is any human intervention here as the delightful story unfolds – which fits in brilliantly with the dilemma under discussion
It’s as if a space of possibility is created in which the audience can imagine a different
upbeat sea-shanty music that has the whole audience clapping along and even joining in (despite not knowing the words) in the case of a small person sitting behind me
Captain Sandy is an all-round feel good experience
with stunning visuals and incredible performances from the puppeteers and their magnificent puppets
Give the gift of magic this Christmas: take your family along to the Puppet Theatre Barge for a simply wondrous performance they will surely all delight in

Easily one of the best-looking beaches in the UK
Holkham would be flooded with visitors if it were just that little bit closer to London – or
It’s surrounded by a massive nature reserve of pinewoods and salt marsh
sea lavender and rare birds (this is the only place besides the Tower of London that I’ve ever spotted a raven)
The beach itself is an enormous sandy stretch dotted with dunes
and it’s at least a half-hour’s walk from the car park to the shoreline
meaning you see nothing but nature and sea
and maybe the odd film crew: Holkham has deservedly starred in many a movie (Shakespeare in Love
Need to know The car park and Lookout Café (with toilets) are operated by Holkham Hall. For more facilities

It’s linked by bus to Wells-next-the-Sea

The small coastal town of St Andrews is best known for two things: its ancient Scottish university and star-studded golf course
But look further and you’ll be surprised by some seriously cinematic beaches. West Sands is the largest on offer: a wild two-mile stretch of golden sand just a short stroll from the town’s cobbled streets
framed by dunes and popular with dog walkers and runners
it famously featured in Chariots of Fire – though if you want to recreate the iconic scene
we’d probably recommend wrapping up warm
