Four-time winner Mark Selby described his own performance as "pathetic" as he crashed out of the Halo World Championship in the opening round
beaten 10-8 by close friend Ben Woollaston who scored his first Crucible win
Selby joins Kyren Wilson and Neil Robertson as the major casualties of the opening round and it\'s the second year in a row he has failed to make the last 16 as he lost to Joe O\'Connor in 2024
The 41-year-old came to Sheffield with high hopes having won three titles this season
but looked uncomfortable throughout and wasn\'t helped by problems with his cue tip which had to be replaced before the second session
He made just one break over 40 tonight as his opponent came from 5-4 down to win six of the last nine frames
Woollaston had appeared at the Crucible just once before
and his second trip to the Theatre of Dreams has given him the best moment of his 22-year career
the world number 44 kept his cool in the closing stages as he set up a second round fixture with Si Jiahui which starts on Saturday night.
"Without a doubt it\'s my best ever win," said the Leicester cueman
"I beat Mark Williams to reach the final of the Welsh Open in 2015 in front of a big crowd
"Mark didn\'t play his best but that doesn\'t matter to me
I made a few mistakes but that was bound to happen
Mark is the best there has ever been tactically but I stayed tough in the safety battles and that won me the match
but I made it hard for him and that\'s why he got frustrated
It\'s possible I can go further if I can play better."
Woollaston took the opener tonight with a top break of 58 then added a scrappy 11th frame to lead 6-5
but Selby then got the snooker he needed on the pink before converting two excellent pots for 6-6
At the time that felt like a turning point
but in fact it was Woollaston who kept his composure and regained the lead before the interval
Selby had first chance in the 14th but made just 37 and his opponent took it with a run of 60 for 8-6
Leicester\'s Selby got the better of a scrappy 15th to halve the gap and he was on 12 in the next when he was unlucky not to find position when splitting the pack
Woollaston\'s runs of 49 and 39 put him 9-7 ahead and he had a scoring opportunity in the 17th but missed a red to a baulk corner and Selby punished him with 81
Frame 18 lasted 46 minutes and Selby looked favourite to make it 9-9 until he missed a mid-range red leading 37-13
Woollaston countered with 32 and later laid a tough snooker on the last red
setting up the chance to close out the result
said: "I was pathetic from start to finish
I didn\'t show up and didn\'t deserve to win
I didn\'t score well enough when I got chances
Ben\'s safety was unbelievable at times and had me in trouble
I grew up with him and have seen him progress
"Sometimes I just try too hard and stop myself from playing
I can\'t put my finger on why that happens
I know I won tournaments but to finish like this puts a dampener on the season because my goal is to win more Triple Crowns
John Higgins and Xiao Guodong finished the opening session of their second round meeting locked level at 4-4
Higgins arrived in Sheffield as one of the form players on the circuit
having collected silverware at the World Open and the Tour Championship in recent months
62 and 54 to lead 3-1 at the mid-session interval.
who won a maiden ranking title earlier this season at the Wuhan Open
then claimed the next two frames to move 4-3 ahead
Four-time champion Higgins took the last of the session with a run of 79 to finish all-square
The second of three sessions takes place on Friday afternoon at 2:30pm
Mark Selby threw the yellow ball up the table after conceding 13th frame to Ben Woollaston
live and on demand on TNT Sports and discovery+
The four-time world champion, the second favourite going into the tournament, follows the defending champion, Kyren Wilson, and the 2010 winner, Neil Robertson, in going out of the World Snooker Championship in the first round.
It also means the Jester from Leicester has been beaten in the first round by a player from the same city for the second successive year, after his 10-6 loss to Joe O’Connor last year. Woollaston, 37, the world No 44, is competing at the Crucible for the first time since 2013. His wife is the snooker referee Tatiana Woollaston.

his safety was unbelievable at times but I still had my chances
I try too hard and stop myself from playing
I grew up with him and have seen him progressing.”
Selby appeared far from his normal cool self and an indication of his mood came at the end of the 13th frame
when he grabbed the yellow ball that was over the corner pocket and slammed it across the table before storming out of the arena
he had erred in leaving the yellow over the pocket
was calm and composed throughou and led 7-6 at the mid-session interval
Selby pulled one back but the underdog held his nerve to seal the greatest victory of his career
Woollaston has struggled with his health and has endured blackouts during matches
For several months he struggled with basic tasks
such as standing or staying awake for any length of time
I literally woke up to eat because I was sleeping 18 to 20 hours a day
I put loads of weight on because I was just eating and sleeping

Photograph: Phil Duncan/Every Second Media/ShutterstockLuca Brecel completed an impressive comeback to beat Ryan Day 10-7 and avoid becoming the latest former champion to exit
The 2023 winner was 5-1 down to Day during the first session
But Brecel won the final three frames on Wednesday to make it 5-4 and get himself right back in the match
made a century in the opening frame of Thursday’s second session to put Brecel on the back foot once more
The Belgian then took charge of a scrappy contest
winning three successive frames again to take a 7-6 lead into the mid-session interval
Although Day won the next frame to level at 7-7
Brecel went back in front at the next opportunity before edging a tight 16th frame – which was decided by a black-ball shootout – thanks in no small part to an audacious long double on the green with just the colours remaining
Brecel wrapped it up by a scoreline of 55-14 and will face Ding Junhui in the second round
The result was also a significant milestone for the No 7 seed – the first match he has won at the Crucible outside his surprise run to the title in 2023

Thursday afternoon marked the start of the second round matches
with Mark Allen in early trouble against Chris Wakelin
Allen steadied things with a break of 100 but a missed red allowed Wakelin to clear up and take a 3-1 lead at the mid-session interval
An excellent snooker behind the black helped Allen cut the gap to 3-2 but his English opponent struck back with an 84 break
then took the last two frames of the session to build a commanding 6-2 lead in the first-to-13 contest
Four-time world champion John Higgins is locked at 4-4 with China’s Xiao Guodong after a nip-and-tuck start to their last-16 encounter
who has risen into the world top 16 this season
is one of the most improved players on the circuit and is one of a record six Chinese to have reached the second round

who except for Ronnie O'Sullivan is probably the king of the Crucible in recent times
"Mark started with a century in the first frame and I thought 'here we go'
I just didn't want to be miles behind going into the second day
"I was surprised that he broke down [when on a break] quite a few times
Even though he didn't play at his best

here's Mark Selby speaking to BBC Four after his defeat:
I didn't play anywhere near where I can play and didn't deserve to win
he played some good match snooker and his safety was second to none
"I felt like I threw so many frames away
I kept getting 30 in front and running out of position or missing a silly shot
and then Ben would come back and win the frame
I probably threw five or six frames away and it's disappointing because I came here with a bit of confidence and I didn't expect to play like that."

MARK SELBY dropped his head in despair after getting the draw “he didn’t want” at the World Snooker Championship
The British ace is just one of the big names competing at this year’s epic event at the Crucible.
Selby is currently number four in the world rankings
And he is hungry for victory after losing the Tour Championship final to John Higgins 10 days ago
Selby’s path to glory at the World Championship will not be straightforward
The draw for this year’s tournament was made live on the BBC
But he dropped his head dramatically while rolling his eyes after discovering he will play Ben Woollaston in the opening round.
The pair, who both hail from Leicester, are close mates and have played each other seven times before.
Selby has won five of those meetings, including their most recent one at the 2023 British Open.
But his pained expression showed he would have rather avoided Woollaston at the World Championship
And it was quickly picked up on by BBC host Rob Walker
But it wasn’t the only horror tie served up
Ronnie O’Sullivan will face nemesis Ally Carter if he decides to play after their X-rated war of words following the 2024 Masters
The Rocket has yet to make a definite decision on whether to appear at the tournament for the 33rd successive time
having withdrawn from five ranking events this year on medical grounds
Selby had his say on O’Sullivan and Carter’s draw
declaring: “I don’t think either of them will be happy with that
“It’s great that Ronnie is in the competition
It seems he is playing and that is fantastic for the game
“Carter is probably one of the toughest qualifiers to draw again
He has played Ronnie in two world finals and the Masters final
BELOW is a list of snooker World Champions by year
widely considered as dating from the 1968-69 season
when the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA) took control of the sport
The first World Championships ran from 1927 - with a break from 1941-45 because of World War II and 1958-63 because of a dispute in the sport
Fred Davis and John Pulman (both 8) were the most successful players during that period
Stephen Hendry and Ronnie O'Sullivan share the record for the most titles in the modern era

Haringey’s Planning Sub Committee gave the green light to demolish and replace the current Selby Centre in Tottenham with 202 much needed homes at council rent for local families
It follows the decision by Enfield Council’s Planning Committee in January 2025 to grant permission for a new high-quality
sustainable Selby Centre to be built next door in the corner of Bull Lane Playing Fields on the Enfield side of the border
At a time when affordable housebuilding is at its lowest point for a number of years
Haringey Council has made it one of its priorities to deliver a new generation of 3,000 high-quality council homes by 2031
with more than 2,000 already underway or completed
a partnership between the council and Selby Trust
will provide much-needed family-sized accommodation
including 67 three-bedroom homes alongside 12 four-bedroom properties
As well as council homes and the new Selby Centre at the heart of the village
accessible and affordable sporting facilities and improved green space
connecting communities through new foot and cycle routes
This is another important milestone for this fantastic project and our ambition to provide much-needed high-quality council homes
Selby Urban Village is an ambitious placemaking project that brings together the knowledge
We are delighted that together we are another step closer to bringing forward hundreds more council homes for local people and the changes to the Selby Centre and Bull Lane that the community have asked for
This scheme will support local enterprises
provide much needed new sports and leisure space and give the community an opportunity to connect with nature
health and wellbeing benefits of this scheme for Tottenham and the surrounding area will be invaluable
This is great news for the Selby Community and the neighbourhood

Mark Selby won the BetVictor Welsh Open for the second time
with a 9-6 victory over Stephen Maguire in the final in Llandudno
Selby pulled away to win the last three frames to land the £100,000 top prize and Ray Reardon Trophy
have passed away in recent months and both would have appreciated Selby’s capacity to raise his game at the key moments as he dominated the closing stages
after Maguire had made a fine clearance for 6-6
This is becoming an excellent season for 41-year-old Selby as he won the Unibet British Open in September and the BetVictor Championship League Invitational earlier this month
It’s the first time since 2020/21 he has won three titles in a single season – and there are opportunities for Selby to add to his haul in the coming months
notably in the spring when he will be among the leading contenders for the World Championship crown
Having contemplated retirement during a few dark moments at the end of last season
His tally of 24 ranking titles brings him level with Neil Robertson on the all-time list
Selby moves into third place in the Johnstone’s Paint World Rankings
and into fourth spot on the Johnstone\'s Paint One-Year list
Maguire was playing in his first ranking final since 2020 but missed out on a sixth ranking title
it’s a step forward for the 43-year-old Scot and the £45,000 prize crucially lifts him to 23rd on the Johnstone\'s Paint One-Year list with the top 32 qualifying for next month’s World Grand Prix in Hong Kong.
After sharing the first session 4-4
Maguire had a chance to take the lead in the opening frame tonight
but missed the green off the last red when he led 55-36
Maguire\'s run of 55 helped him take frame ten
then four-time World Champion Selby responded with a 67 to lead 6-5
The Englishman looked set to double his advantage until he missed a straight-forward red to a top corner on 60 in frame 12
and Maguire punished him with a fabulous 71 clearance which included a series of crafty shots to nudge reds off cushions
once again Selby edged ahead with a break of 60
then went two frames ahead for the first time since 3-1 with a superb 128 total clearance
Selby led 37-0 when he missed the pink to a centre pocket
but Maguire\'s counter ended on 8 when he failed to cut a thin black to a top corner
he handed Selby the table to add a match-winning 30
"At 6-5 I missed an easy red and the clearance Stephen made was ridiculous," said Selby
who won his first ranking title at this event in 2008
"That could have been a turning point but I managed to get ahead again in the next frame
It\'s great to see Stephen playing well and back in a final because he is a class act.
I am in a much better place than I was at the end of last season
when I shouldn\'t have even played at the World Championship
I am enjoying it more and I feel I can still get better because there are a few parts of my game I can improve on."
Maguire said: "I want to say thanks to the crowd
When I made the clearance for 6-6 I wanted to carry on
the interval came at the wrong time for me
From 6-6 I hardly had a chance so all credit to Mark."
Network Rail has worked with the Railway Heritage Trust (RHT) to restore the site of a time capsule at Hambleton
RHT and former British Rail colleagues unveiled a newly restored commemorative stone marking the Selby railway diversion
which took place at the original site of the stone
celebrated a significant milestone in British railway history – by recreating the unveiling event 45 years ago
The time capsule was buried in July 1980 by British Rail general manager Frank Paterson and rail industry colleagues to mark the construction of the Selby Diversion on the East Coast Main Line (ECML)
which was Britain’s first new build high speed line
and spent time with T-Level students – giving them tips and advice from his remarkable 40-year career as they begin their own journeys
Network Rail colleagues collaborated with the RHT to clear and restore the site where the capsule is buried – following decades of woodland growing around it – with the completion coinciding with this year's Railway 200 celebrations
a replacement for the 1980 plaque and additional new plaque
The work was jointly funded by Network Rail and a grant from the RHT to support these improvements
The stone has also been designated by the Railway Heritage Designation Advisory Board
meaning it was selected for preservation because it symbolises an important part of railway history
The Selby Diversion was created to route around the Selby coalfield which had plans to reopen
There were concerns that reopening the coalfield would potentially lead to subsidence and speed restrictions on the ECML
British Rail decided to build a new stretch of railway and divert the ECML around the coalfield
and ends at Temple Hirst Junction near Selby
and is still used by hundreds of passenger and freight services a day
head of passenger experience for Network Rail’s East Coast route
said: “It has been great to work with the Railway Heritage Trust to restore this piece of railway history and mark such a significant part of the East Coast Main Line story.”
“Next time you are travelling between York and Doncaster
make sure you look out for the time capsule site!”
who now chairs the Friends of the National Railway Museum
said: “When I was general manager for British Rail in its Eastern region it was a momentous occasion to bury this time capsule following many years of hard work to a create a 14-mile stretch of purpose-built high-speed line for Britain’s changing railway
it’s wonderful to see the site restored back to its former glory and I am grateful for the work Network Rail has carried out
said: “The Railway Heritage Trust is pleased to support Network Rail in this restoration work so that people can once again see the site of the commemorative stone from passing trains
“The recent history of the railways is just as important as its earlier history
and it is good to celebrate the site of the birth of high-speed rail in this country.”
When the time capsule site was first constructed
it could be seen by passengers on passing trains
The improvement work allows for passengers to see the site once more – nearly half a century after it was installed
to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years

Four-time winner Mark Selby crashed out in the first round of the World Snooker Championship after a late-night 10-8 defeat to qualifier Ben Woollaston
Selby had edged the opening session of the first-round match on Wednesday 5-4 against Woollaston – a fellow Leicester native and practice partner
started a fightback by taking the first two frames on Thursday evening’s resumption before Selby won a safety battle in frame 12 to level up at 6-6
Selby then showed his frustration at losing the 13th frame – sending the yellow ball up the table after conceding
World number 44 Woollaston further extended his lead before Selby reduced the deficit again after edging a scrappy 15th frame
After Selby again failed to make a significant break in the next
Woollaston produced a run of 49 to leave the former champion needing snookers before closing out the frame to move one away from victory at 9-7
After two re-racks at the start of the 17th frame
with Woollaston failing to make the most of his chances at the table
Selby eventually crafted a classy break of 81 to stay alive in a match which had passed the seven-hour mark
A tense 18th frame saw unforced errors from both men
with Woollaston sending a pink against the jaws of the middle pocket when seemingly set to build a match-winning break
but then missed a pot which allowed Woollaston back in to edge in front with the final red remaining
leaving the former champion needing two snookers
After Selby – who lost in the first round last year – left the blue on to the middle pocket
as Woollaston marked the biggest win of his career
Selby told BBC Sport: “It was tough from start to finish
“I didn’t play nowhere near where I can play and probably didn’t deserve to win
Ben played some good match snooker and his safety was second to none
Woollaston goes on to face Si Jiahui in the last 16
“I’m in shock really,” Woollaston said to BBC Four
who except for Ronnie O’Sullivan is probably the king of the Crucible in recent times
Earlier on Thursday, former champion Luca Brecel had overcome a big deficit to beat Ryan Day and book a last-16 clash with Ding Junhui
The 2023 world champion appeared to be in danger of joining last year’s winner Kyren Wilson in crashing out in the first round when he found himself 5-1 down to Welshman Day during the first session
But the Belgian won the final three frames on Wednesday to make it 5-4 and get himself right back in the match
A century from Day in the opening frame of the second session put Brecel on the back foot once again
but he won three successive frames twice more on Thursday afternoon to close out a 10-7 victory

Mark Selby has admitted he is concerned about Ronnie O'Sullivan's mental health ahead of the World Championships in Sheffield next week
There is still no confirmation on whether O'Sullivan will participate in this year's Worlds with the draw set to take place on Thursday
with the tournament getting underway on Saturday
O'Sullivan has not played since January where he snapped his cue in anger at the Championship League in Leicester
where the 49-year-old admitted he needed time away
so I knew at that moment in time the right decision was to not play and such a big tournament," the 49-year-old conceded
Selby who was one of the few people to see O'Sullivan in Leicester
has spoken out ahead of the World Championships and admitted he was concerned about his rival
"I was at the Championship League when Ronnie was there and I spoke to him afterwards," said Selby.
Knowing how I was you can sort of see it in people now and pick it up
people’s mental health and wellbeing is worth more than just a game of snooker," he added
Selby has insisted he hopes to see The Rocket in Sheffield as it would improve the quality of the tournament
"I’m sure I’m one of many who hopes he plays in the World Championship because I think it will be a better tournament for it
"Obviously it’s got big exposure anyway but a tournament with Ronnie in is obviously a better tournament than one without him
Selby isn't the only pro who has publicly spoken out on the prospect of O'Sullivan missing the event, with Mark Williams addressing the topic in an interview with The Metro.
"It would be huge and it would be disappointing for our game," Williams called the prospect of a Worlds without O'Sullivan
"All the tournaments that anyone is winning
they’re brilliant and you’ve done well to win it
but when he’s in a tournament it’s different class," he insisted

Mark Selby was considering retirement this time last year
but has a spring back in his step this season and started his Sportsbet.io Tour Championship campaign with a 10-6 defeat of Si Jiahui
setting up a quarter-final with Neil Robertson
Ding Junhui is also into the last eight, as he thrashed defending champion Mark Williams 10-3 to earn a tie with Kyren Wilson.
It was in Manchester a year ago that Selby lost to Gary Wilson in the opening round, describing his performance as "pathetic" and insisting "if I carry on playing like that, that will be it for me, for sure." Last summer he gave serious consideration to his future, but elected to keep playing, and that has proved the right decision as this season he has already won the Unibet British Open, BetVictor Championship League and BetVictor Welsh Open.
And the four-time Crucible king will set his sights on more silverware this week after a comfortable win over China\'s Si. He\'ll face Robertson on Wednesday night at 7pm, with the concluding session on Thursday evening.
Si trailed 6-2 after the first session but took the first two frames tonight to narrow the gap to 6-4, before Selby responded with a tremendous 136, the new front-runner for the £10,000 high break prize. Frame 12 came down to a long safety exchange on the final black, and Si cracked first as he left the black too close to a centre pocket and Selby clipped it in for 8-4.
After the interval, Si showed his break-building quality with a 125, missing the pink when he could have eclipsed Selby\'s target. The next two were shared then Si had a chance to close to 9-7, but missed the blue to a top corner when he led 58-30, and Selby punished him by clearing from the last red.
"I am practising more now and enjoying it more," said Selby. "Last year I wasn\'t putting the work in because I wasn\'t enjoying the game. I feel quietly confident now. To win two ranking titles makes it a good season. There are still some poor performances in there so I need to be more consistent. Overall I was happy with the way I played today but I know I\'ll need to improve against Neil, I\'ll have to cut out the silly mistakes."
Ding celebrated his 38th birthday in style with a superb display against Williams. From 3-3, the Chinese ace won seven frames in a row with breaks of 116, 78, 56, 56, 52, 78, 102 and 82 as he set up a quarter-final clash with World Champion Wilson on Thursday.
In November, Ding won the 15th ranking title of his career at the International Championship, and he is now through to the last eight of this event for the third consecutive year.
"I just played the table," said Ding, who won his first ranking title at the China Open 20 years ago. "The first few frames yesterday I was so bad. I just tried to score more points in each frame. I felt 70% or 80% tonight. Mark had chances at the start of the match. But tonight he was missing balls and left me chances. Hopefully I can play the way I want to against Kyren."
Williams was playing with contact lenses for the first time but admitted his is still struggling with his game and his eyesight. "The scoreline tells you all you need to know (about the contact lenses)," said the Welshman. "I will stick with them. But whoever qualifies for the World Championship will be praying they draw me in the first round. But Ding was very good, he outplayed me."
Mark Selby produces a superb display to thrash Ali Carter 6-1 and advance to the last eight of the Masters at Alexandra Palace.

Councillors press pause on local plan to focus resources on county-wide housebuilding proposals
The North Yorkshire Council executive will recommend to full council that the Selby local plan be put on hold in light of new requirements under the National Planning Policy Framework
The updated National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF)
means that local authorities must calculate housing need using a new method
resulting in increased housing targets in line with the government’s ambition to build 1.5 million homes in the next five years
the calculated housing need in North Yorkshire has trebled from 1,300 homes a year to 4,077
This has prompted North Yorkshire Council to consider scrapping the Selby local plan to “focus resources on delivering the North Yorkshire local plan”
Under the former NPPF the emerging local plan for the market town had assumed an annual target of 386 new homes
but the revised calculations have increased that to between 483 and 561 homes

the executive member for open for business
said that the impact of the updated NPPF and its targets for new homes
economic growth and associated infrastructure means that much more work would be needed to get the Selby local plan approved
He said that an additional £180,000 would be needed in order to find and approve new sites for housing
and that the council’s budget would be better directed towards the development of a plan for the whole county

Mark Selby hasn\'t reached the semi-finals at Alexandra Palace since 2014 but on today\'s evidence he is among the favourites for the Johnstone\'s Paint Masters title as he romped to a 6-1 victory over Ali Carter in the opening round.
Selby looked close to his best last week at the BetVictor Championship League
notably making six centuries in a single day
And he carried that momentum into tonight as he outplayed Carter
rattling in two tons and three more breaks over 50
The Leicester cueman\'s reward is a quarter-final meeting with Mark Allen or Si Jiahui on Thursday.
World number five Selby had a tremendous record at the Masters between 2008 and 2014
winning it three times and reaching two further finals
Since then it has been slim pickings in London as he has failed to go beyond the quarter-finals
will be quietly confident of a deep run this time as he seeks to become the only player other than Ronnie O\'Sullivan and Stephen Hendry to lift the trophy for a fourth occasion.
He took the opening frame tonight with a break of 62
and added the 41-minute second by getting the better of a safety exchange on the final brown
Selby fired breaks of 108 and 93 to lead 4-0 at the interval
Carter led by 62 points with four reds left when he failed to double a red to centre
and his tenacious opponent battled back and gained the snooker he required
then could have forced a respotted black but failed to pot the blue along the top cushion
allowing a relieved Carter to pull one back
But Selby regained the initiative with a 126 for 5-1
and he made an excellent 53 clearance in frame seven to settle the result.
"I felt a bit edgy at the start but winning the second frame was huge
if Ali had gone 1-1 it could have been very different," said Selby
"I kicked on after that and felt comfortable
It\'s always great playing in front of a full house here and it gives you motivation
"My only concern was not getting in my own way and freezing
I enjoyed it and felt I was zoned in and focused
I have been there and done it in this event which will stand me in good stead if I get to the business end."
Carter said simply: "Mark was very good and I was absolute rubbish
He strangles you and zaps you of confidence
I just wanted to get out of there in the end."

He will meet Luca Brecel on Saturday as he continues his quest for a third title of the season
having already won the Unibet British Open and BetVictor Championship League Invitational
"We both struggled and brought each other down
there were a lot of scrappy frames," admitted world number four Selby
who landed the first of his 23 ranking titles at the Welsh Open in 2008
The only positive for me is that I got over the line and I can only improve tomorrow
Leicester\'s Selby took the opening frame on a respotted black
and the second on the colours. A break of 68 helped Higgins pull one back
and in frame four he converted a thundering a long pot on the penultimate red to create the chance for 2-2. The fifth frame lasted 62 minutes
resolved when Higgins potted brown and blue to go ahead
before Selby\'s run of 53 helped him restore parity
Higgins was on 61 when he over-cut a tricky thin red
and his opponent later made a 42 clearance to edge 4-3 ahead.
Selby was 15 points behind in frame eight when he missed the final green to a baulk corner
The key moment came when Scotland\'s Higgins
potted the blue to a centre pocket and was unlucky not to gain position on a red
and Selby slotted in a long red to set up a match-winning 84
still seeking a first ranking title since the 2021 Players Championship
I know the shots but I\'ve got deficiencies in my game
I just can\'t bring myself to play the right shot
when I have been playing the low black and screwing into the reds
I just don\'t have the cue power to play those sort of shots
But Mark made a great clearance under pressure in the last frame."

Work could start within weeks on a multi-million project to transform public areas around Selby railway station
North Yorkshire Council chiefs have given the go-ahead for work to progress on the £39.1m Selby and Skipton Station Gateway schemes
The projects will see upgraded facilities for cyclists and pedestrians and improvements to surrounding public areas including better links to the town centres
Councillors took the decision despite concerns that the schemes had been scaled down since they were first presented to the public in 2019
It has also emerged that the Selby project could cost up to £2m more than expected
with councillors agreeing to use money from the authority’s reserves if necessary
executive member for highways and transportation
told councillors: “We expect to have spades in the ground in a matter of weeks
The authority has been awarded more than £38m in funding from the Transforming Cities Fund programme for projects in three town centres
No decision was taken on the £12m Harrogate Station Gateway Scheme however amid a legal challenge from local business owners who have formed the Get Away campaign to fight the plans for the town
Councillors gave authority for officers to enter into construction contracts and accept grants for the Selby and Skipton schemes
Members voted to progress the work despite concerns that the projects had been reduced since they were first revealed and a budget deficit of up to £2m for the Selby project due to rising costs
added: “The scheme now in Selby is a long way away from what we were originally promised and some of the bigger items and more important items have gone from it unfortunately.”
Cllr Duncan said the work agreed so far was just the first phase of the programme
with the hope of a second phase of work taking place in the future when funding allowed

Stephen Maguire came from 3-1 down against Mark Selby to level at 4-4 in the first session of the BetVictor Welsh Open final
Selby passed up a chance to go 5-3 ahead and Maguire capitalised to leave the contest finely poised going into the concluding session
which starts at 7pm. First to nine frames will lift the Ray Reardon Trophy and collect the top prize of £100,000
A break of 43 helped Selby take the opening frame
and in the second he resolved a safety battle on the colours with a cracking long pot on the green for 2-0
Maguire responded with a break of 60 to halve the gap
and the Scot had a scoring chance in frame four but ran out of position on 24
He compounded the error with a weak safety
Maguire fought back to 3-3 with breaks of 54 and 63
Selby made 41 before missing a red to centre
then misjudged a safety which let Maguire in for an excellent 81 clearance.
Selby is playing in his 36th ranking final and looking for his 24th title
That would move him level with Neil Robertson on the all-time list
The first of his 23 ranking titles came at this tournament back in 2008 so he is now looking to double his tally of Welsh Open crowns
The 41-year-old from Leicester is aiming to win his third piece of silverware this season
having picked up the Unibet British Open in September and the BetVictor Championship League Invitational earlier this month
Not since 2020/21 has he won three titles in the same season
he\'ll be up to fourth on the Johnstone\'s Paint One-Year list. En route to the final
Selby made two centuries and 15 more breaks over 50
Maguire is looking for a seventh ranking title
Stuart Bingham and Ali Carter on the all-time list
He is playing in his 14th ranking final and first since the 2020 Tour Championship when he beat Mark Allen
The 43-year-old from Glasgow also has one Welsh Open crown to his name
world number 29 Maguire had not reached a ranking quarter-final this season
crucially winning a high percentage of scrappy frames
He is yet to make a century in the tournament
though he did score 12 breaks over 50 in reaching the final
he will jump to 26th if he loses today and 21st if he wins
And on the Johnstone\'s Paint One-Year list he has made a vital leap forward from 41st to either 23rd or 13th
guaranteeing a place in next month\'s World Grand Prix in Hong Kong
though the pair have never clashed before in a final.
