EarthSky’s Marcy Curran introduces you to the Pleiades
The 2025 EarthSky Lunar Calendar is now available! A unique and beautiful poster-sized calendar. Keep up with all phases of the moon every night of the year.
The Pleiades star cluster is also famously known as the Seven Sisters. Or, to some, it’s known as Messier 45 (M45) on the list of Messier objects
The Pleiades is visible from almost every part of the globe
It’s seen from as far north as the North Pole and farther south than the southernmost tip of South America
It looks like a tiny misty dipper of stars
The Hyades pattern is another star cluster near the Pleiades stars
the Pleiades was once a single star: the brightest in the sky
The Polynesian god Tane disliked this star bragging about its beauty
The modern-day festival of Halloween originates from an old Druid rite that coincided with the midnight culmination of the Pleiades cluster
People believed the veil dividing the living from the dead is at its thinnest when the Pleiades culminates – reaches its highest point in the sky – at midnight
these sibling stars drift through space together at about 25 miles per second (40 km per second)
Many of these stars shine hundreds of times more brightly than our sun
Read more: Open star clusters are loose groups of stars
In our Northern Hemispheres skies, the Pleiades cluster is associated with the coming winter season. It’s easy to imagine this misty patch of icy-blue suns as hoarfrost clinging to the dome of night
So frosty November is the month of the Pleiades
because it’s at this time that the Pleiades shines from dusk until dawn
But you can see the Pleiades cluster in the evening sky well into April
The star name Aldebaran comes from an Arabic word for follower
It’s thought to be a reference to this star’s forever chasing the Pleiades across the heavens
the Pleiades cluster rises into the eastern sky before Aldebaran rises
and sets in the west before Aldebaran sets
The only exception to this rule happens at far southern latitudes
Pleiades rises a short while after Aldebaran rises
Most people see six, not seven, Pleiades stars in a dark country sky
However, the story about the lost 7th Pleiad appears universal. The astronomer Robert Burnham Jr. found the lost Pleiad myth prevalent in the star lore of European
Native American and Aboriginal Australian populations
Moreover, Burnham suggested that the “lost Pleiad” may have basis in fact. Modern astronomy has found that the 7th-brightest Pleiades star – Pleione – is a complicated shell star that goes through numerous permutations
these changes can cause this star to vary in brightness
mapped out 11 Pleiades stars before the invention of the telescope
To see more than six or seven Pleiades stars, you must have very good eyesight (or a pair of binoculars). And you must be willing to spend time under a dark, moonless sky. Stephen O’Meara
claims that eyes dark-adapted for 30 minutes are six times more sensitive to light than eyes dark-adapted for 15 minutes
But the surest way to see additional Pleiades stars is to look at this cluster using some optical aid
Bottom line: The Pleiades – or Seven Sisters – is a star cluster that’s a popular target for observers in the late fall and winter in the Northern Hemisphere

All About The Rock
Have you ever noticed how modern metal bands either sound like they’re trying to be Viking warlords or they just discovered synthesizers in their mom’s basement
thank whatever cosmic overlord you believe in
but instead of just slapping on the usual “Odin this
they weave an actual sci-fi concept that doesn’t sound like it was written by a guy who just watched Blade Runner for the first time
and injected it with actual emotional weight
He knows when to hold back and when to let it rip
which is more than I can say for half the bands that think shrieking equals talent
If you’re the kind of person who complains that “metal isn’t what it used to be,” stop whining and listen to this. Seven Sisters aren’t just paying tribute to the greats—they’re carving out their own path with this follow up to Pt.1 (reviewed HERE,) and if there’s any justice in this universe
they’ll be headlining festivals instead of whatever generic sludge passes for metal these days
Shadow of A Fallen Star Pt.2 is an album that respects its audience

Home ❯ Discover our countryside ❯ Best of the countryside ❯ A sense of belonging: Alinah Azadeh and the Sussex landscape
Alinah Azadeh has found connection among the rolling downs and chalk cliffs of Sussex
‘Imagine all those who have ever been here before you
over the millennia; our ancestors from the Middle East
travelling over the land bridge to this island before it split apart from the mainland
reaching down into the depths of the estuary channel
amidst the moist genius of the mycelium networks
‘Imagine us all becoming more than human in the chalk
(From ‘Taking Root’, part of We Hear You Now
new stories for the Seven Sisters and Sussex Heritage Coast.)
As much as I love time spent indoors writing alone
there is something uniquely inspiring about taking my notebook outdoors
The previous quote comes from a story I began to write on Exceat Hill
It was initially triggered by an archaeological find – the discovery in the 1920s of an abandoned village
wiped out by the Black Death – and it cycles through history to the present time
amid the current renaturing of the area by the South Downs National Park Authority
On a listening post attached to the gate at the top of Exceat Hill
one of 14 We Hear You Now audio stories by fellow writers set around the six-mile coastal stretch between Seaford and Eastbourne
As well as an awareness of human history and deep time as I walk the chalk
the present moment inspires my senses; ears wrap around the joyous raving of skylarks
eyes widen as I notice a bee orchid or the violet spark of a round-headed rampion in the grassland
I feel the crunch of chalk under my boots on this path
with its silver flash of meanders on the right
carrying me up onto Haven Brow – the first of the Seven Sisters cliffs – on the left
Exceat is not the path most travelled by visitors to reach the sea
swiftly elevating walkers above the entire area
It is also now much more accessible since off-road scooters – and support – have been made available from the Seven Sisters Visitor Centre
I myself wasn’t always able to reach the hill
with long periods of time of restricted movement due to foot injuries
Covid and ongoing health issues still affecting my capacity for long walks
directional dyslexia means I easily take a wrong turn if alone
though I have learnt to see getting lost as a creative opportunity
the We Hear You Now stories are all online
evoking our writer journeys over the chalk
amid the beauty of the changing seasons and in the face of extreme shifts in climate so visible along this coastline
So much of my creative meandering takes place ‘in company’ and I have been taught so much by writers
I know I am in a creative process with the more-than-human world around me
the outline of the coastguard cottages at Seaford Head; all this texture
story – or just exquisite sound (for my podcasts)
I have developed a sense of belonging to landscape that goes far beyond any definition of nation
For three years on programmes I led during my residency
I did this alongside 35 writers with heritage from over 20 countries; we ‘made belonging’ as we walked together
the imaginary blends with the real to open a different lens on deep time
imagined futures – if we can only sustain ways to collectively care for this land
there is no environmental justice without social justice
I now continue my landscape-inspired writing and podcasting online via my Substack and outdoors
including a commission for the 100th anniversary of the Towner art gallery in East Sussex; if you walk up towards Beachy Head from Eastbourne from next spring
you will encounter my verses carved into four new artist benches by Will Spankie
set around Warren Hill dew pond on the South Downs Way
loss and yet hopeful renewal of landscape and deeper connection to ourselves and others through these difficult
it’s set in one of my favourite kinds of South Downs spaces – a place to pause and breathe … with an extraordinary view

The towers are home to more than 250 residents
The ending of an exclusivity agreement between Rochdale Boroughwide Housing and Legal & General Affordable Homes could put the Rochdale towers in jeopardy
With the housing association’s plans for the tower’s refurbishment exceeding £107m, RBH and LGAH had been working to find a long-term solution but failed to reach a commercially viable agreement for their renewal
RBH are now “considering all other options”
which includes the potential for demolition
said: “[It’s] critical we make sound financial decisions and spend every penny of our customers’ rent money wisely
we have not been able to reach a commercially viable agreement that both RBH and LGAH were comfortable with from a risk perspective.”
is a collection of seven 100-flat tower blocks affectionately named the Seven Sisters by locals
They were built in the 1960s but are now in poor and declining condition
RBH has said the end of its agreement with LGAH would allow it to be more flexible
providing the housing association with greater scope to pursue alternative ideas for College Bank
RBH is now engaging in independent structural surveys
and financial modelling to inform future decision-making for the site
The housing association will shortly be looking for contractors to aid in its plans for the site
Improvements to the blocks and outdoor public realm will continue as promised to residents
RBH had previously announced its intention to demolish the towers before the government allowed Rochdale Council to open a housing revenue account
allowing the council to own and manage its social housing
An LGAH spokesperson reiterated the failure to reach an agreement with RBH and said: “RBH will be exploring alternative routes for the delivery of the project
“We [at LGAH] remain committed to sustainably delivering much-need affordable housing that meets the needs of local communities across the country.”
LGAH indicated its desire to invest in the affordable housing sector long-term
RBH’s Newton added: “We know this will be disappointing for customers living in College Bank
but the work completed in the last few months has taken us forward and will not be lost
“Considering options independently will take a number of months
and whilst we know this brings further uncertainty
we will continue to engage with residents throughout.”

Seems to be a bit of waste to have 500 empty homes
when there is a desperate shortage of affordable homes
£100m renovation to release an additional 500 homes and to renovate the 250 already occupied seems a bargain
Surely the longer they drag their arguments out
If we are to address the lack of social housing in Rochdale
then these flats have to be brought back to standard and used to house families
I can’t believe £107 million will be anywhere near enough to renovate them to a decent homes and building safety standard I also doubt there will be much demand for them from families in Rochdale
There can be little doubt that the whole situation has been poorly mismanaged by Rochdale Boroughwide Housing (RBH) who since the transfer to it of the Council’s housing stock ten years ago has seemed out of its depth
There is a declared housing crisis within the borough with 22,000 people chasing 10,000 properties and an anticipated waiting period of five years
The flats have much potential but since the collapse of the Legal and General deal something needs to be done
The Council is likely to resist demolition but it could demonstrate leadership by opening a housing revenue account and taking responsibility for the seven blocks by seeking their transfer back
Perhaps a cheaper refurbishment plus an external clean and smartening up would be ok
Perhaps it’s better just to pull them down and put something else up like new low level flats of say 8 or 10 storeys
maybe they could be look like the smart new college building.
The borough claims it has a ‘disproportionately high number of HMOs’ and is pursuing the introduction of measures to wrestle back control
The housing association is working with main contractor Caddick to build 69 social rent homes for over 55s and a GP surgery on 2.5 acres of disused land on Arrow Street in Broughton

the seven dramatic peaks of Norway's Seven Sisters stand proudly
yet together forming a magnificent silhouette that commands the horizon
Located along the rugged Helgeland coastline in Northern Norway
the Seven Sisters are not only admired for their natural beauty but are also steeped in mythology
There are variants of the myth that have developed over time
according to the local Helgeland tourist association
the mountains and valleys of Norway were the domain of the trolls
Suliskongen and Vågakallen were among them
but both leaders struggled to control their young
Each sister possessed a unique beauty and a distinct personality
they formed a striking sight as they wandered the coastline
Their father was very protective of them and forbade them from wandering too far from home after dark
Suliskongen sent his seven daughters to the maiden of Leka
so she could turn them into responsible young ladies
after a long day of exploring the coastal cliffs with Lekamøya
the seven sisters lost track of time and found themselves far from home
and they couldn’t resist the temptation to take a swim
had left home and was looking for mischief
He had long harbored a secret desire for Lekamøya
he had wandered the coast when he saw her and the sisters bathing in the moonlight
the Seven Sisters are still an imposing sight
preparing to shoot an arrow to stop Lekamøya
throwing his magical hat to block the arrow
Although this initially protected Lekamøya and the sisters
the emerging sunrise would have the final say
The Seven Sisters were caught by the light
was forever fixed in the shape of a rider looking south towards the sisters
Lekamøya made it as far as the county border and now stands on an island in Trøndelag
which had fallen to the ground with the arrow stuck in it
a famous mountain with a distinctive hole piercing through it
a reminder of the fateful arrow that once flew through the night sky
Sailing past the Seven Sisters on a Norwegian coastal voyage or on a smaller cruise ship that sails along Norway’s inside passage is the best way to see the mountains in context with the coastline
However, it’s also possible to climb these imposing icons
and serious hikers can even tackle all seven in a single day
with a well-maintained trail that steepens just before the summit
Skjæringen (3,405 ft) and the twin peaks of Tvillingene (3,100 ft and 3,215 ft)
are family-friendly hikes with gradual trails and fresh water along the way
Each peak rewards climbers with stunning views
and a convenient route connects Skjæringen and the Twins for a multi-peak experience
There’s a visitors book at the top of each peak
and hikers who successfully climb all seven can claim a certificate from the local tourist association
Although possible to climb all seven in a single day (the record is approximately four hours)
most hikers spread out the project over several days

Three of London’s iconic stations will have a Barclays Women’s Super League (WSL) takeover to mark a historic weekend for the top two tiers of women’s football later this week
Across the weekend of November 16 and 17, for the first time ever, all eleven games across the Barclays WSL and Barclays Women’s Championship will be played in each home side’s respective main stadia.
And to celebrate the milestone, the Women’s Professional Leagues and Transport for London (TfL) have joined forces to have a number of iconic Barclays WSL players on the overground and underground airwaves.
In the stations closest to the aforementioned grounds – White Hart Lane, Seven Sisters and Fulham Broadway – those traveling to the games will be welcomed into the stations by the voices of some of the league’s biggest names.
Bethany England (Tottenham Hotspur), Lotte Wubben-Moy (Arsenal), Lucy Bronze (Chelsea), and Alex Greenwood (Manchester City) have worked with TfL to record special announcements that will play out across the stations in the run up to kick-off at the matches.
Additionally, the stations will feature unique wipe boards created especially for each of the fixtures for supporters to enjoy as they make their way towards the grounds.
Fans are also being encouraged to ground-hop using the London Overground and Underground to travel between each game, with Spurs against Arsenal kicking off at 1.45pm (due to finish at approximately 3.45pm), and Chelsea versus Manchester City starting at 5.30pm.
Those wishing to attend both matches should start out on the Overground from White Hart Lane to Seven Sisters, then take the Victoria line to Victoria before the District line to Fulham Broadway – a journey that takes between 45 and 60 minutes in total.
Finally, the coming weeks will also see the introduction of the Lioness line on the London Overground to celebrate the achievements of the England women’s national football team.
More information on the line will be shared on Transport for London’s social media channels in due course.

their combined running time is over 38 minutes
before blasting off with a Dragonforce style riff propelling us straight into Hyper-space
The twin lead guitars are entwined throughout
as Christou double-taps and thrashes the skins
Clever tempo changes are linked by Kyle McNeill’s clear and sharp vocal as he tells the story
A melodic and proggy mid-section allows the traveller to enjoy the journey
before we come hurtling back to the ground to a backdrop of ferocious beats and racing riffs
‘Solar Winds’ by contrast has a steady classic rock sound with even beats and chugging guitar riffs
This immediately demonstrates the band’s fine musical talents
showing their ability to mix up the styles
The harmonized guitars work in conjunction with the marching beat of Martin and Christou
giving a respectful nod to the influence of those 80’s rock bands
It includes plenty of chanted backing vocals
which will have the fists punching the air at a live show
The track induces toe-tapping and unconscious head nodding
listen and enjoy as the chronicle continues
The final track is the epic ‘Andromeda Descending (A Fallen Star Rises)’
and is the big sister of ‘Andromeda Rising’ the opening track from the previous album
A scratchy guitar riff and a drum volley grabs the attention
the overlapping textures of sound is impressive
A charging heavy bass beat and McNeill’s quick lyrics propel us into the track
in places it’s hard to believe that Seven Sisters comprises of only four members
The track arrives at a calming section where gentle strumming sits next to a soaring futuristic sounding guitar melody
adding to the atmosphere the rhythm section bring seismic beats
The tempo then increases with a classic rock riff and beat
the pace intensifies as the band switch to a power/speed metal sound
The velocity recedes as we return to that classic sound Seven Sisters play so well
The band carefully brings us back safely in a controlled and measured splash landing
Seven Sisters’ ‘Shadow Of A Fallen Star Pt.2’
and they have whetted my appetite to go searching for their back catalogue
In places the album reminded me of a couple of legendary recordings firstly
Queen’s ‘Flash Gordon Soundtrack’ with their sci-fi compositions and secondly
Iron Maiden’s ‘Seventh Son of a Seventh Son’ for their themed story-telling to a rampaging background
Whether you listen to ‘Shadow Of A Fallen Star Pt.2’ as a follow up to its forerunner or as a stand-alone recording you are in for one hell of a ride

More than 600,000 people a year visit Birling Gap
The National Trust has banned coaches from one of Britain’s most popular beauty spots in an attempt to reduce the growing numbers of people visiting the site
Up to 600,000 people a year visit Birling Gap which is part of the Seven Sisters cliffs in East Sussex on England’s south coast
Local people hope the ban will reduce visitor numbers and in turn limit damage and coastal erosion to the site
which has featured in films including Atonement and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves
said to be the first of its kind imposed by the trust
was welcomed by Philip Myerson who lives nearby
who told the Daily Mail: “Birling Gap and Seven Sisters is being ruined by a huge increase in visitors in recent years
“It’s a tsunami and it’s having a really big impact on the small road
a former National Trust worker who lives in a cottage close to the cliffs
said: “The National Trust wants to welcome people to Birling Gap but it wants them to see it at its best
Banning all coaches is a good idea as they are often huge
arrive in large numbers and are an eyesore.”
Visitors arriving by other means are still welcome to the beauty spot
On the National Trust website for Birling Gap and the Seven Sisters cliffs it states: “Please note
we no longer allow coach parking or coach drop-off within our car park at this location.” It instead directs people to “alternative coach parking in the Eastbourne area”
A National Trust spokesperson said: “At Birling Gap
we welcome over 600,000 visitors every year to this small rural clifftop location that is vulnerable to coastal erosion
“We’ve seen a significant increase in coach visits in recent years

The spokesperson said the move was not a trust-wide policy and was made in response to a specific problem in Birling Gap and Seven Sisters
The ban follows a previous warning from East Sussex county council about people veering too close to the cliff edge
A council spokesperson told SussexWorld: “The iconic white cliffs are very popular with visitors but they are extremely unstable and can give way at any time with no warning.”

SYNTH ANATOMY uses affiliation & partner programs (big red buttons) to finance a part of the activity
Recovery Seven Sisters is a new percussion Synthesizer for desktop and Eurorack based on the Syncussion and Syndrum synths
A developer is now bringing back the sound of late-70s drum synth instruments in two new hardware releases
Seven Sisters is a new percussion Synthesizer that aims to capture the sound of the Pearl Syncussion
Whether it is a replica of these classics or inspired by them is unknown
It offers seven independent voices; six are playable simultaneously
so super-advanced sound design is not the aim of this drum synth
The developers promise that these can create sounds that go beyond the classics
But you don’t have access to these oscillators
You can trigger Recovery Seven Sisters using the buttons at the bottom of the units
All sounds come out of the same dual-mono audio output
The Seven Sisters drum synth is also available as a 10HP drum voice for Eurorack
the Eurorack module offers more control over the sounds
you can only play one sound at a time and not all seven like in the desktop Recovery Seven Sisters
four CV inputs for controlling the parameters
this is a somewhat strange drum synthesizer release
but the control options are far too limited
If you need one-press drums with this characteristic
But it’s the wrong choice if you want to get deeper into drum synthesis
Recovery Effects Seven Sisters is available now for pre-order for an introductory price of 288,95€ without a power supply or 302,95€ with
The Eurorack module is available for 220,95€.

Is there really no cv control over the mode
You’d have the decay of voices cut off as they get interrupted by CV changes
Cutting the decay is fine and can sound great
The review states it is unknown whether the Seven Sisters is a replica or inspired- The idea of the Seven Sisters was to create a hardware unit that captures the essence of the Syncussion and Syndrum
while adding additional oscillators and sound sources to make them more complex and interesting
The original units only have a single oscillator per voice
The Seven Sisters starts with some of the most useful settings I’ve put together on my own Syncussion unit
and the controls are based around what is most useful in a compact
There is a small attempt at creating a conventional kick
but the definitive goal was to create the most interesting starting points I’ve found on my own units
you’ll find the parameters are not quite as simple as pitch and decay
the pitch control on Voice 1 is also manipulating the noise oscillator
there is a filter control that works with the pitch
These combinations go even further with the Eurorack unit and offer 3 settings per voice
in a wide range of settings that will scratch any Syncussion itch you have
all of the parameters are controllable over CV
Compare this to the original Syncussion units or Behringer reissues that have 2 playable voices and no options for CV
The Seven Sisters Eurorack module not only offers CV control over every parameter
but retails for only $29 more than the Behringer unit
The Seven Sisters also shines at being a great performance module for stage
The desktop version not only can be triggered
but unused triggers can be played manually
Along with the simple and powerful controls
this makes the Seven Sisters extremely interactive and fun to play
this is not a review but just the news 😉 Thanks for the extra info
The description on the web and the demo just say pitch and decay
that’s why I wrote only pitch and decay in the article

Around 100 firefighters tackle blaze at kebab shop in early hours
Friday, 29th November 2024 — By Isabel Loubser
WATCH OUR ONLINE HISTORY CHANNEL, UNTOLD LONDON
A TAKEAWAY restaurant and two flats have been destroyed after flames engulfed a building in Holloway
Fifteen fire engines and around 100 firefighters were sent to tackle the fire at the Dubai Shawarma kebab shop in Seven Sisters Road after the first call was made to the service at 3.45am yesterday (Thursday)
It is the second time this year that a major fire has severely damaged businesses in the road
firefighters were still arriving – from as far away as Dagenham – and the police had cordoned off a large part of the road
Five people were taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service crews after suffering from smoke inhalation
but at least two residents had been discharged and were waiting to find out what had happened to their flat
who live on the second floor above the takeaway
said they woke up at 4am before being told to leave the building immediately
Firefighters at the scene yesterday (Thursday)
I looked out the window and I could just see the flames
We saw flames from our bedroom window that is facing the street
Then we went to the hospital for smoke inhalation.”
the residents were told by the police that there was “nothing left” of their flat and that the roof was still alight
residents told how they woke up to the smell of smoke and had to “run through flames” onto the street
Passers-by and neighbours in the area were equally shaken by the fire
with many waiting by the police cordons to see when they would be able to return to their homes and businesses
was “shocked” when he saw the flames as he was walking to work
I was just in shock and took some videos to send to my brother,” he said
who runs the Photo 7 Digital shop on the corner of Seven Sisters Road
said he hoped to return to his business soon
I just came into work and I can’t get into the shop
It was expected that the road would be shut until at least the end of the day
Station Commander Mike Watts said: “There are road closures in place and we urge people to avoid the area
“The fire produced a lot of smoke in the vicinity and local residents were advised to keep their windows and doors closed while crews brought the fire under control.”
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Fire Brigade and the Metropolitan Police Service
In February more than 40 firefighters were called to a blaze near the junction with Holloway Road
which had been caused by a “heat source placed too close to combustible items”
Kebab shop owner says he has no insurance as he tries to rebuild
Friday, 24th January — By Frankie Lister-Fell

THE owner of a kebab shop which was destroyed in a ferocious fire in Seven Sisters Road has spoken for the first time about watching his business burn to the ground
He has set up a fundraiser to try and cover the cost of getting his shop back after the blaze on November 28 destroyed the building and flats above
Mr Mohamed told the Tribune this week: “One night
the director called me and said ‘your shop is on fire’
He rushed to the scene from his mother’s home in Kentish Town where he was staying
“It was a big fire just coming out of the building and lots of smoke and all the fire people around,” Mr Mohamed said
Around 100 firefighters were sent to tackle the blaze
The ground-floor restaurant was destroyed and a flat roof on the ground floor collapsed
Part of two flats on the first and second floors of the building were also damaged
Five people were taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service crews after suffering smoke inhalation
Mr Mohamed said: “Nobody was seriously injured
Dubai Shawarma had only been open for around seven months
This was the first kebab shop Mr Mohamed had opened
and it took over from a former chicken shop
Mr Mohamed said he and his friend were arrested by police investigating the fire but then had been released on bail
the police said: ‘Who’s the owner of the place?’ I say it’s me
what kind of benefit am I going to get if I did it?’
because I don’t have any insurance to get the money back
He added: “Most of the police from Islington
most of them cried because they know what we have here
Mr Mohamed said he is now working part time in his brother’s butcher shop a few doors down
but has to check in with police while on bail
Mr Mohamed added: “This is a first time in my life
first time I’ve been to the police station
“I have to go to sign in at the police station every Monday and Friday
I feel so bad when I come here and these people – most of them
they’re doing bad things and I have to be in the same queue.”
The appeal said: “We are committed to returning stronger than ever and continuing to be a positive presence
Your support will not only help us rebuild our business but also allow us to continue fulfilling our vision being able to serve quality food at affordable prices.”

Takeaway and two flats were destroyed in blaze
TWO men have been arrested in connection with a fire that destroyed a takeaway and two flats in Holloway.
The blaze, which erupted from the Dubai Shawarma kebab shop in Seven Sisters Road in the early hours of last Thursday, is being investigated by the Metropolitan Police.
On Friday the two men – who have not been named – were arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life and taken into custody before being bailed.
At the scene, residents living above the take-away told the Tribune how they were awoken by the fire alarm just before 4am and were rushed to hospital after inhaling smoke.

People wishing to visit the Birling Gap and Seven Sisters cliffs will have to arrive at the coastal site by other means

The National Trust has banned coaches from parking at one of the country’s most popular beauty and hiking spots, in an effort to save its eroding coastline
People wishing to visit the Birling Gap and Seven Sisters cliffs will have to arrive at the coastal site by other means now
Up to 600,000 people a year visit the site to admire the iconic views or walk along the white chalk cliffs - one of the longest stretches of undeveloped coastline on the south coast.
But the National Trust, who manage the site, are trying to limit these crowds in an effort to protect the cliffs from coastal erosion and keep visitors safe.
On the National Trust website for Birling Gap and the Seven Sisters cliffs it now states: “Please note, we no longer allow coach parking or coach drop-off within our car park at this location.
The notice adds that there is alternative coach parking in the nearby Eastbourne area.
“At Birling Gap, we welcome over 600,000 visitors every year to this small rural clifftop location that is vulnerable to coastal erosion,” a National Trust spokesperson told the BBC.
“We’ve seen a significant increase in coach visits in recent years, which the site is unable to cope with. We continue to welcome visitors by car, motorbike, minibus and bus service.”
The National Trust says the chalk on the cliffs erodes in such a way that “large pieces fall away and leave near-vertical faces”.
It added that the cliffs are “very fragile” due to the chalk which can be softened further by heavy rain or undercut by wind and wave action.
“This means the cliff edge is very unstable and at risk of collapsing at all times,” the National Trust has said, adding that there has been “significant change” at Birling Gap in the last year in an effort to adapt to coastal change.
The coach ban news was welcomed by locals, who say the site has been “ruined” by an increase in visitors in recent years.
“It’s a tsunami and it’s having a really big impact on the small road, the verges, the grassland and the paths. Everything is being worn away,” Philip Myerson who lives nearby, told the Daily Mail.
Dot Skeaping, a former National Trust worker who lives in a cottage close to the cliffs, also told the paper: “The National Trust wants to welcome people to Birling Gap but it wants them to see it at its best. Banning all coaches is a good idea as they are often huge, arrive in large numbers and are an eyesore.”
The Independent has contacted the National Trust for a comment.

the future of the Seven Sisters blocks remains unclear
RBH had previously announced its intention to demolish the towers but then entered talks with L&G Affordable Homes over a potential refurbishment project
talks broke down after the parties failed to reach an agreement on how to progress a project that would cost more than £100m to carry out
The blocks were built in the 1960s and contain 700 flats
700 empty flats in the midst of a housing crisis
Are they in such poor condition that no one wants to live there
Given the cost of demolition (as well as outstanding debt that will be written off) would it not be better to charge rents which cover the operating costs of the buildings to households who accept they will only have a short term tenancy
Whenever i see older housing being demolished
it always seems to be replaced with more houses than what they just cleared
Do green spaces and property size not matter to people anymore
Surely they could upgrade them for less than £100m if the towers are structurally sound
