The paddling pool area in Beachfields will be getting a much-needed face lift as part of Swale Borough Council’s Sheerness Revival project
The area around the paddling pool outside the Healthy Living Centre will be expanded providing more space for seating
picnic tables and making it a more pleasant place to relax while your children play
New facilities to the paddling pool such as toilets accessed from within the fenced area and a serving hatch to the new café facilities in the leisure centre are also being included within the works
The ambitious plans for the centre also include modernising and improving the GP facilities and moving the surgery to the ground floor to improve access to this important healthcare provision
including a new adventure play area for toddlers and tag active - a fun modern activity for older kids (and grown-ups!) - to get exercise while traversing an obstacle course
an award-winning health and well-being charity based in the Sheppey Healthy Living Centre
will have a purpose-built space to help them continue providing their valuable and important services to locals
The existing gym facilities will be expanded and refurbished to help people keep fit and healthy
To enable these works the paddling pool will need to remain closed for the whole of summer 2025 as it will be enclosed within the hoarding
This is to provide a safe working area for the leisure centre improvements and will reopen when the project in Beachfields is completed in 2026
In addition to general improvements to the surrounding area
a Sheerness themed adventure golf course will be opening this summer 2025
The project in Beachfields is a key component of the council's £20 million Sheerness Revival programme which aims to improve the health and wellbeing
education and leisure facilities on the Island and create new employment and training opportunities for local people
The other elements of Sheerness Revival include the expansion of Sheppey College
and the refurbishment of Masters House and the creation of workshop spaces

Plans to improve the health and leisure on the Isle of Sheppey are set to be decided next month
Swale Borough Council has ambitious plans for a significant redevelopment of the Sheppey Leisure Complex as part of their £20 million Sheerness Revival project
The council’s planning committee are set to decide on the application at a meeting on 16 January 2025
expansion and modernization of the GP facilities
the creation of a dedicated space for local charity Sheppey Matters
and upgrades to the gym and leisure facilities
Temporary relocation plans for the GP practice
gym and Sheppey Matters are in place to limit the disruption to users of these services
The Minster Medical Group’s surgery at the Sheppey Healthy Living Centre will be closed from 5pm on Friday
They will be temporarily relocating to their other location
Patients can continue to access GP services by calling the practice in the normal way via their telephone number 01795 877714
and appointments will take place at the Minster Medical Centre
The GP practice will keep patients updated and have contacted vulnerable patients individually to make sure they can continue accessing their health care services
The council’s plan for the practice at Beachfields
and modernising the current facilities for patients and staff
and will move the surgery to the ground floor to improve access to this important healthcare provision
will be temporarily relocating in January from their base in Beachfields to three new sites
From 13 January Sheppey Matters will be providing drop-in sessions and uniform provisions from a shop at 31 Broadway
Other services will continue take place at the Eastchurch Community Health Hub
For more information, please call 01795 585335 or email office@sheppeymatters.org.uk
The charity is making this temporary move so the council’s planned works at Beachfields can begin if approved
which includes the creation of three large community rooms for events
all designed specifically to meet the charities’ needs
Sheppey Matters has projects tackling loneliness
educates and supports people with ADHD and autism and much more
The gym will be temporarily relocating to one half of the sports hall within the Sheppey Leisure Complex
with the other half of the sports hall opening back up to community sports activities
The gym is making these temporary arrangements so that the council can implement their plans for Beachfields
which will refurbish and expand the existing gym facilities if the planning application is approved
This includes the creation of a larger fitness suite
The current sports hall would also be reduced to two courts to make way for a new soft play area and tag active - a fun modern activity for kids (and grown-ups!) to get exercise while traversing an obstacle course
An outdoor gym is also planned for the site giving people free access to workout equipment
promoting healthy and active lifestyles on the island
A new heritage-themed adventure golf course and improved site accessibility are also planned
This project is one of three initiatives under the Sheerness Revival project which aims to improve the health
Planning applications for the Sheppey College extension and additional business units at Masters House have already been approved with works set to begin next year
Chair of the Regeneration and Property Committee
“As we approach a decision on our planning application
we are getting ready to begin work immediately if it’s approved
“There will inevitably be some disruption to services during the works
but we’re doing everything we can to minimise the impact on centre users and residents in the area
and plans are in place to temporarily relocate the gym
“Our health partners understandably felt that the normal Christmas office closure was an appropriate time to begin preparation work
as patients are used to accessing services from the Minster site from this time
“We're confident that any short-term inconvenience will be more than outweighed by the positive impact Sheerness Revival will have on the lives of everyone in Sheerness.”
Chief Executive Officer of Swale Community Leisure
"It is great to be involved in this project which will make a positive contribution to the health and wellbeing of the people of Sheppey
and to see that it is close to starting to commence if the planning application is approved in January
but I am sure that all our customers will join me in welcoming the proposed changes and look forward to a much-improved future."
Chief Executive Officer of Sheppey Matters
“The charity is thrilled to be a partner in the Sheerness Revival project and is eagerly looking forward to welcoming residents back to the healthy living centre in 2026
and sharing the new and redesigned rooms and space with our partner groups
“During the planned refurbishment Sheppey Matters will continue to deliver its important services to the Sheppey community
Director of Primary Care for NHS Kent and Medway
“NHS Kent and Medway welcome the plan to relocate and modernise the GP surgery facilities and provide improved access for patients as part of the redevelopment of Sheppey Health Living Centre
“We are supporting the GP practice in minimising the impact of this temporary relocation on patients.”
the council are working to complete the redevelopment by April 2026

This will equip local 16–19-year-olds with the skills they need to thrive in today's job market and contribute to the local economy
chair of the Economy and Property Committee
"We have been working on detailed plans for our ambitious regeneration project so that we get the most value for our residents as possible from this funding
but now we know who is going to help us accomplish this
"We had a number of great bids from contractors for both of our projects which has allowed us to pick the best contractor for the job
"EKC Group has also announced their chosen contractor to help expand the college
it is amazing to see all of the Sheerness Revival projects picking up speed - we have a very busy year ahead of us."
Chief Infrastructure and Transformation Officer
“Jenner Contractors Ltd were chosen as our main contractor after a competitive tender process
we’re committed to using local suppliers wherever we can
so it was brilliant to have such a competitive tender from this local company
“They were chosen for the ability to deliver this project within a short timeframe and to a high degree of quality
whilst also achieving the best value for money
"It’s also wonderful to appoint Jenner as they have committed to a range of additional activities that will benefit our students
carrying out talks about the construction industry and offering work experience placements
“We are incredibly excited to move forward with Jenner in delivering an additional 900m2 of educational space in Sheerness
which will benefit the local community and wider Isle of Sheppey for many years to come."

Peel Ports will begin work on a new ro-ro berth and floating pontoon at the port in March next year with the aim of improving throughput for finished vehicles and other cargo
Peel Ports Group is investing £30m ($37.7m) in the development of a new ro-ro berth at the UK port of Sheerness aimed at increasing efficiency and boosting throughput for finished vehicle and rolling machinery deliveries alongside other commodities moved by trailer
The port currently handles around 300,000 finished vehicles a year
Peel Ports said the development will include a floating pontoon helping to cater for vessels exceeding 230 metres
the pontoon will support quarter ramp vessels on both sides
plus stern ramp vessels on the adjacent berth
Work on the site will begin in March next year
beginning with the removal of existing infrastructure and the driving in of piles to fix the pier structure
Peel Ports said the berth is expected to be operational by summer 2025
“This £30m project not only shows our ambition to grow our offering to a range of industries
it also represents the next stage of significant investment into the port’s infrastructure which will bolster our position as a leader in handling ro-ro vessels,” said Richard Goffin

The port of Sheerness currently handles around 300,000 finished vehicles a year.
At Sheerness port Ceva Logistics operates a 30-hectare vehicle processing centre (VPC) that provides pre-delivery inspection
vehicle conversion and body shop repairs for carmakers
Peel Ports provided additional storage at various locations around the port equal in capacity to 6,500 vehicles
which it said significantly enhanced Ceva’s ability to manage peak periods and sudden surges in shipping volumes
Peel Ports said the new berth and pontoon was part of a plan to deliver a “comprehensive automotive service”
that includes a direct rail connection that would link with the Wildfire Bridge
The bridge spans Brielle Way and provides faster and more secure access between the port estate and the Wellmarsh development
Peel Ports has invested more than £28m into its 20-hectare Wellmarsh site to support growth for automotive and other commodities
Peel Ports said the investment in the new berth followed the launch by Finnlines of a new freight service in September
running to Sheerness from Finland with further connections available to Belgium
That service will be operated by three Finneco-class hybrid ro-ro vessels
each with a cargo capacity of 5,800 lane metres
Customers can access the entire Finnlines and Grimaldi Group network via the Belgian ports of Zeebrügge and Antwerp
“Finnlines continues to strengthen its services by increasing cargo capacity for the UK service,” said Merja Kallio-Mannila
the launch of our new service from Sheerness secures an important trade route between England and the Continent
further solidifying our position in the market

Peel Ports Group has announced it will invest £30 million ($37.7 million) into the development of a new RoRo berth at the Port of Sheerness to meet growing demand from new and existing customers
The project will see a new in-river vessel berth and floating pontoon developed
which will increase capacity for RoRo cargo handling at the port
catering for larger vessels exceeding 230 metres LOA
The new berth and pontoon will cater for RoRo vessels arriving at the port
construction machinery and building materials
With on-site construction set to begin in March 2025, the development is expected to support the continued growth of its customers such as Volkswagen and CEVA
who use Sheerness as the primary location for their Southern UK operations
the pontoon will support Quarter Ramp vessels on both sides
plus Stern Ramp vessels on the adjacent berth
The new berth is expected to be operational in the summer of 2025

Peel Ports Group has announced a substantial investment of £30M aimed at enhancing the Port of Sheerness with a new roll-on
driven by increasing demand from both existing and new clients
is set to increase capacity for RoRo cargo handling to accommodate larger vessels exceeding 230m in length overall
The development will introduce an in-river vessel berth and a floating pontoon specifically designed for RoRo vessels that transport a variety of commodities including automobiles
The construction phase is scheduled to commence in March 2025
with the new facilities expected to be operational by summer 2025
Currently undergoing design and manufacturing preparations
the construction process will start with the removal of existing infrastructure
followed by the installation of piling and the pontoon
These improvements will not only augment the port’s capabilities for larger ships but will also facilitate the loading and unloading operations for a range of vessels including Quarter Ramp and Stern Ramp types
The Port of Sheerness serves as a pivotal hub for the UK’s supply chains
particularly benefitting the automotive sector
The port currently processes around 300,000 vehicles annually and the improvements are likely to bolster operations for major clients like Volkswagen and logistics company CEVA
who rely on Sheerness for their Southern UK activities
The investment also aligns with recent developments in the area; Finnlines has launched a new freight service connecting Finland to Sheerness
which further expands options for customers with routes available to Belgium
Each of the newly introduced Finneco-class hybrid RoRo vessels can carry approximately 400 trailers
enhancing transit times and improving the efficiency of cargo operations
the new berth and pontoon are expected to positively impact industries such as construction and paper
allowing for greater volume capacity across various cargo types

Help design and name the Isle of Sheppey themed adventure golf coming to Beachfields
Swale Borough Council need your help to name and design the new attraction
which will be located alongside the extended and improved leisure centre in Sheerness as part of their ambitious Sheerness Revival project
Beachfields Park has always been a site for leisure
all the way back in 1840’s people flocked to the beaches by steamboat
Later a bandstand was built with performances drawing large crowds
tennis courts and there was even once an adventure golf course
This is a small part of the wider improvements planned for the site
creating a purpose-built space for local charity Sheppey Matters and the installation of adventure play and Tag Active
The council also plan to create a new café and free outdoor gym along with other improvements to the public space
The new adventure golf course will include 15 holes
with each being themed around something that helps make the island such a special place
The public are being asked to suggest landmarks and ideas that are unique to Sheppey’s heritage to feature in the design of each of the holes
There was once an adventure golf course at Beachfields
themed around the Isle of Sheppey and London
and this project wants to revive this legacy as part of the leisure facilities on offer to the people of Sheerness and further afield
We want people to suggest local landmarks and historical events to be featured in the course design
Children in Sheerness will also have a chance to help design and name the course at in-person
interactive and fun sessions that will take place in their local schools
“The adventure golf will be a great place for friends and families to meet and have fun outdoors
yet this is only a small part of our wider Sheerness Revival project
“Beachfields Park has been a leisure destination for more than 100 years - the beach
and funfair drawing thousands to Sheerness over the year
“This new adventure golf course will add another chapter in that storied history
“Our ambitious project is also aiming to improve education
health and leisure on the island through the improvement of our infrastructure. “We are increasing the size of Sheppey College
the GP practice and making other important improvements to Masters House and the leisure complex. “We can’t wait to get shovels in the ground and see these plans
we know they will have a massive positive impact on the lives of the residents of Sheppey. “Please get involved in this project by helping us design and name the new adventure golf which will be coming soon to Sheerness
We want to hear any of your local knowledge and memories of Beachfields and what makes the Isle of Sheppey so special.”
Read the proposal and share your name suggestions and design ideas here.
The consultation will end on 12 February 2025
The project in Beachfields is a key component of the council's £20 million Sheerness Revival programme - funded by the UK Government - which aims to improve the health and wellbeing
The other elements include the expansion of Sheppey College and the addition of workshop spaces at the refurbished Masters House
which have both been approved by the council
There’s still two days left of family fun at the biggest Sheerness Seaside Festival yet
The festival celebrating Sheerness’ history as a seaside and former naval dockyard town received £5,000 from the UK government’s Shared Prosperity Fund through Swale Borough Council’s Town Centre Action Grant (TAG)
The weeklong event began on 10 August starting with local bands and free music
and will culminate in a spectacular carnival parade starting at 4pm on 17 August
The event is packed with exciting things to explore including
The carnival parade will end with a grand firework display on the seafront at Beachfields kicking off at 9pm

chair of the economy and property committee said;
“Ambitious and vibrant events like these breathe life into our cherished towns and help create a sense of pride in our community
“So being able to support exciting projects like these
is amazing as the hardworking volunteers often have great ideas but don’t always have the money to execute them
“The carnival parade and fireworks display have become an annual highlight for many people and we are grateful to be able to help make the Sheerness Seaside Festival Week a reality.”
"We greatly appreciate the contribution from Swale Borough Council's Town Centre Action Fund which has made this year's event possible
“This is our 3rd year running the festival and it promises to be the biggest and best yet
“We look forward to welcoming people to our great town and hope they go away with many happy memories."
a clocktower and a well-known seal will be testing golfer’s skills later this year
as construction tees off on the new Isle of Sheppey themed adventure golf course
The course has been designed with input from local people and is being installed alongside the soon-to-be extended and improved leisure centre at Beachfields
as part of Swale Borough Council’s Sheerness Revival project
The exciting new course features 18 holes celebrating the unique heritage and landmarks of the Island
The council actively sought ideas from local school children and the wider community to help shape the final designs
ensuring the course truly reflects local pride
Community feedback led to some brilliant changes from the council’s initial concepts
a planned whale feature has become "Sammy the Seal" – a tribute to the friendly seal who became a familiar sight around the Island
from a pupil at Rose Street Primary School
has led to the swapping of a lighthouse design for a model of the historic High Street clock tower
Students from EKC Secondary School proposed scorpion obstacles along with representation of the blue town wallfor one hole – their tails will provide a fun challenge at the end of the course
Local input also inspired the design of the service hut
which will now resemble the iconic beach huts lining Sheppey's coastline
Many other public suggestions were already part of the plans
confirming the designs resonate with local heritage
Anyone looking for a fun activity for all the family will be able to putt their way through Sheppey’s unique identity with holes featuring:
This new adventure golf course is expected to open in late July and will revive a legacy at Beachfields
which has been a destination for leisure since the 1840’s and even hosted a previous course
It forms just one part of the major improvements planned for the Beachfields site under the Sheerness Revival project
This wider regeneration includes modernising and expanding the GP practice
creating a dedicated space for local charity Sheppey Matters
and installing exciting Adventure Play and Tag Active facilities
and improve accessibility throughout the public space
This project brings back adventure golf to Beachfields
enhancing the leisure facilities available for residents and visitors
and contributing to a revitalised Sheerness
