Andy Brown heads to Hullaballoo in Shipley for the Care Home album launch He reports back on an eclectic night of synth punk noise rock and electronica for Louder Than War Leeds/ Bradford/ Wakefield based synth-punks Care Home are preparing to officially launch their debut album For Nothing is an absolute bruiser of a record: dark It’s an album that successfully reflects the bands formidable live presence and I’m looking forward to hearing some cuts from it – up close and personal – later on tonight it’s all being put on by The Endless Hum so you know that a loud The evening begins with a set from prolific electronic artist Dominick Schofield aka Yorkshire Modular Society I’ve been lucky enough to catch YMS on a few occasions – including a rather brilliant support slot for William Basinski – and the focus has tended to be on ambient sounds and textures Sat behind a desk of wires with his trusty modular synth Schofield hits us with a healthy dose of techno It’s quite the scene as a group of young kids start dancing at the front roll on the floor and enthusiastically embrace the steadily increasing BPM They’re clearly having a blast and while my dancing is more subtle – OK it’s an approving head nod at best – so am I “Shall we go really fast?” Schofield asks us before proceeding to blow the bloody doors off There’s a distinct shift in style with the arrival of the Barnsley-based trio An electronic/ slightly Krautrock-like introduction is soon smashed to smithereens as the band kick into action with a flurry of distorted guitars Rik provides some suitably red-faced and rabid vocals as Dale frantically explores the frets of his guitar This is some satisfyingly substantial noise rock The volume has been cranked all the way up to neighbour troubling levels and there’s a low ribcage rattling rumble underpinning every single song Toronto Blessings are really putting the noise back in noise rock and I’m all for it Subtle and complex is all very well and good but sometimes you just need music that hits like a bulldozer Jimi Hendrix playing guitar with his teeth is one thing but I swear Mr Jim Mumby has managed to snap a picture of the guitarist playing the synth with his nose The night shifts gears yet again with a set from the Bradford-based purveyor of spectral electronica Gavin Miller aka Worriedaboutsatan Miller is always ready with something new and tonight finds him accompanied by violinist Sophie Green The duo steadily builds layers of ambient drone to create something quite beautiful Eighties synth sounds gel with serene waves of electronically manipulated strings Who needs a billionaire to feel like you’re floating in space Miller switches between twiddling dials on his modular synth and adding subtle strums of woozy electric guitar We’re watching this music evolve and grow in real time Green conjures some ethereal harmonies as her violin brings a distinctly organic component to this ever-shifting electronic dreamscape “I heard you guys on 6music and I was so proud” someone shouts as the sound gently subsides It’s reassuring to know that music like this is getting out there An almost church-like organ sound fills the air as the band do a last minute soundcheck The congregation has gathered so it must be time for a little Care Home Vocalist Chris Jenkinson beckons us closer before they launch into the albums lead single The band deal in a particularly brutal strain of punk rock and it’s exactly what my weekend needed This immediately rolls into the furious and tightly delivered thrills of The Photograph with Jenkinson insisting – in true goth style – that we “don’t need to see the sun.” You can practically feel the sweat oozing from the stage; we’re only two songs in but its warm in here and the band – as is the Care Home tradition – are giving it their all The laughably small white fan pointing towards drummer Matt Reid must be working overtime “Thanks for staying late,” Jenkinson tells us as the band give themselves a few seconds to breathe “It’s past my fucking bedtime.” Appropriately enough angst-ridden death march that is Prescription Sleep Beyond the sizable wall of riffs and doom-laden/ slightly proggy synths the lyrics present us with some suitably dark imagery “I need to break the branches off your family tree” Jenkinson sings on the exhilarating and slightly unnerving Loved At Home if you’ve got even a little bit of goth in your soul then how could you not appreciate a line like that With its sci-fi synths and Swans-like bombardment Birthday Sex remains something of a personal favourite while Irreversible Séance offers up some pure Doom and gloom never sounded so goddamn good Jenkinson steps away from the synth to pour everything he has into the thrillingly cathartic fury of Stained Glass How a song can channel The Cure and Fugazi this well it’s a balancing act that the band pull off with aplomb walk quite quickly) to try and catch the last train home and – through my piss poor navigation skills – end up missing it You can find Care Home on Instagram Listen to and buy music by Care Home, Worriedaboutsatan, Toronto Blessings and Yorkshire Modular Society on Bandcamp The Endless Hum can be found HERE All photos by Jim Mumby | You can find him on Facebook and Instagram All words by Andy Brown.
