Communities across the UK will come together on Thursday 8 Mayto commemorate the special occasion with the lighting of thousands of beacons
Activities in the Borough will begin at 9am with Proclamations being read out by the Mayor of South Tyneside
An hour-long event will also take place starting at 8.30pm that evening
culminating in a special beacon lighting ceremony at theLawe Top
The event will include a further Proclamation
speeches and a special international tribute will be read out
Mrs Lucy Winskell OBE will then join the Mayor in lighting the beacon as civic dignitaries
communities across the nation will come together to mark 80 years since World War II came to an end in Europe
"We will also honour the bravery and sacrifice of all those who did not return home
They gave so much to secure the freedoms that we have enjoyed since and this must never be forgotten
"We are incredibly proud to play our part in this momentous occasion to show solidarity with the rest of the country and celebrate the victory which brought us peace
The event in South Tyneside will be a fitting tribute on this prestigious anniversary and will give people an opportunity to come together
The event will be compered by Ray Spencer MBE and will feature war-time songs
a Vera Lynn tribute singer and Westoe Brass Band as well as renditions of I Vow to Thee My Country and The National Anthem

The day was celebrated across the world as 'Victory over Japan' (VJ Day)
Partnerships and Equalities and Chairman of South Tyneside Armed Forces Forum
people held street parties and rejoiced after six years of conflict
But that period was also tinged with great sadness due the enormous loss of life as well as the challenges faced by communities in the aftermath
there are few people left who remember the war or Victory in Europe Day
This anniversary will give us an opportunity to learn what life was like during the war and post war and pay tribute to the VE Day generation - from the servicemen who fought for their country
the Merchant Navy which provided transport and supplies to the Armed Forces
to the children who were evacuated from their homes and the women serving in various roles on the home front
"The war not only devastated our nation
fatherless children and countless soldiers physically and psychologically wounded
"The VE Day anniversary is an important and poignant moment to celebrate the end of the war
remember the fallen and reflect on how this era shaped society as we know it today."
South Shields Town Hall will also fly the flags of the UK's allies on 8 May as part of the local event

SearchMatch Report: Darlington 1-1 South ShieldsNathan BellApr 182 min readSouth Shields picked up a point on the road in a 1-1 draw against Darlington on Good Friday
Jack Maskell’s seventh minute opener was cancelled out by Will Jenkins’ leveller in the 36th minute to secure the draw
It is a result which leaves Elliott Dickman’s side in 17th place in the Vanarama National League North table
with just two games remaining of their 2024/25 campaign
after a positive reception to returning from injury recently
and the long-serving defender was afforded the chance to put in a solid shift out there
Shields almost had the dream start when Paul Blackett netted just four minutes into the game
things took a turn for the worse - despite their reasonable start - and Maskell gave the hosts the lead
The young attacker lifted ex-Mariner Cedric Main’s through ball above and over Kyle Seymour
the visitors did compose themselves quite well and they created further chances of note - Peter Jameson was called into action to deny Blackett soon after
who made his first start following an enforced period on the sidelines
impressed during the first-half and a number of opportunities were crafted
Mackenzie Heaney was the architect for Shields’ equaliser
Blackett came close to doubling the Mariners’ lead before half-time but the offside flag went up once more
It would be fair to say things became more disruptive as play restarted following the break
with the weather causing more of a nuisance to those on and off the field
Shields’ first real chance of note in the second-half fell to Blackett
who played Heaney out wide before he aimed a cross at the back post
Heaney did well from a free-kick soon after
David Carson played Blackett through on goal but he just couldn’t get his effort in the back of the net - if not for the conditions
Time escaped Shields in the end and they ended up settling for one point at Blackwell Meadows
Up next is the team’s final home match of the season against Isuzu FA Trophy finalists Spennymoor Town on Monday (3pm kick-off)

SearchMatch Report: South Shields 0-2 Spennymoor TownNathan BellApr 223 min readSouth Shields were defeated 2-0 by Isuzu FA Trophy finalists Spennymoor Town at 1st Cloud Arena on Easter Monday
Goals by Corey McKeown and ex-Shields loanee Aidan Rutledge gave the travelling Moors support something extra to celebrate
it was Shields who almost had the dream start - Paul Blackett surged through on goal within two minutes of the start and Will Jenkins narrowly missed the ball as he slid to try and connect with it
An acrobatic finish by skipper Robert Briggs saw his effort from a corner go over the bar
tried his best but his shot at goal was comfortably claimed by Spennymoor ‘keeper
It would be the visitors who would score first
and to their credit it was an exquisite piece of play
Shields were left vulnerable as the Moors passed it around the box
to slot it past Kyle Seymour in the 16th minute
Seymour was called into action almost five minutes later to thwart Ramshaw's powerful strike
Matty Dolan followed suit with a glancing shot of his own
and although Shields retained the ball well
they were unable to do very much in front of goal with it - at least in the early stages
the Moors broke through and Coleby Shepherd did excellently to clear Junior Mondal’s opportunity off the line
Momentum did appear to shift in the Mariners’ favour as the second-half went on
and a very tidy piece of play involving Shepherd
Blackett and Mackenzie Heaney almost resulted in a dream goal for Shields’ top goalscorer
Blackett’s shot just fell wide and it could be argued that the team were so unfortunate not to have scored from it
David Carson combined superbly with second-half substitute Dan Ward on the right-hand side
as the latter sent a cross into the six-yard box
he couldn’t make enough contact and Spennymoor managed to clear it out
from a similar position to that of McKeown when he scored
but this time it went just past the goalmouth
The home pressure was ramping up but they couldn’t get the goal they needed to drag them back into the game
Things were soon taken out of doubt when Rutledge was brought on for Spennymoor - within a few minutes he had claimed
a penalty after Seymour had brought him down
The ex-Mariner stepped up confidently and slotted it into the back of the net
Yesterday's defeat means that Elliott Dickman’s side remain in 17th place in the Vanarama National League North table
with their final game of the season away against Marine coming this Saturday
SearchMatch Report: Marine 4-1 South Shields FCSam JonesApr 272 min readIt was straight into the action as Marine were awarded a free kick
leading to a direct free kick toward the back post which Seymour was able to punch away
it was Butler who as able to give Marine the lead with a header at the back post in the fourth minute of the game
Marine were looking to add another straight away with Sinclair-Smith picking the ball up and driving down the right hand side
he was able to cut back the ball to Marine’s number 9
it was Blackett who struck first in an attempt to give Shields their first goal of the afternoon
after he picked up the ball on the edge of the box
he fires towards the top right corner but Metcalfe pulls off an impressive diving save to deny him
Marine were up the other end of the pitch where it was Grant who was the man to give Marine their second with a diving header
again were unlucky not to add a goal in the first half
with a looping cross coming toward Allan is met really well but it was blocked off the line by Wardle
Marine added their third through Sinclair Smith when Grant was able to find him driving into the box
and after a good touch to bring it down he was able to knock it past Seymour
McGowan did really well to win Shields a free-kick on the edge of the area
His effort was looking to be looping in but it struck the crossbar
Marine were looking dangerous from set-pieces
with their fourth coming in the 44th minute from Wardle who was able to win a header at the back post from a corner
Shields entered the second half with a tactical change
with McGowan being replaced by Sloan to offer more defensive coverage
Allan received the only booking of the afternoon after denying a Marine attack
Are much better defensive display in the second-half would see Shields win the second half with Crossley stabbing in a header in the 75th minute after a great run down the right hand side by Blackett who was able to find Crossley creeping into the six yard box to see it away
Josh Ashby’s 90+7th minute penalty secured Oxford City a huge three points in Vanarama National League North as the Hoops came from behind to beat South Shields 2-1 at the 1st Cloud Arena.
A difficult first-half saw the Mariners take a 1-0 lead into the break as Paul Blackett tapped in a rebounded shot.
City won a corner and made their advantage count straight away when Andre Burley got the slightest of touches to deflect Lewis Coyle’s corner into the net.
the game will be remembered for a chaotic last ten minutes where City won two penalties.
as Corie Andrews broke past the Shields' backline deep into added time and was hauled down by Mariners' 'keeper Kyle Seymour
sending Seymour the wrong way to send the small contingent of travelling Hoops into delirium.
Ross Jenkins had no option but to tinker his squad
It was a makeshift City side that took to the pitch
Chi Ezennolim and Aaron Drewe were a centre-half pairing with Tom Scott stepping into midfield.
There was also a welcome return for Corie Andrews on the bench.
The first-half was a scrappy affair on a difficult surface
but it was the hosts that managed it the better of the sides.
They took the lead through talismanic striker Paul Blackett on seventeen minutes when he poked home Dylan Stephenson’s shot after Laurie Walker superbly denied the winger.
City had to keep their heads above water in the first half
with Walker making a number of saves to keep the Hoops in it.
They could’ve levelled when Zac McEachran wiggled in on goal
the midfielder opted to be unselfish and pass but the move broke down.
Half-Time: South Shields 1-0 Oxford City
The game was turned on just head two minutes into the second-half when the hosts were reduced to ten men.
The referee had no option but to brandish the red card
the Hoops had the rub of the green with a major decision going their way.
and Andre Burley got the slightest of touches to guide the ball into the net
they gave as good as they got and the game continued as if it was still 11v11.
but he was consigned to long range efforts that rarely troubled Walker.
but the linesman’s flag denied him any celebrations just as Ross Jenkins' side thought they'd edged ahead
but there was always a sense that there was another goal to come in the game
The key moment came five minutes from time when City were given a golden opportunity to snatch all three points
McEachran again proved too much for his marker and was tripped on the edge of the box
City’s terrible penalty record continued as Seymour guessed right
and saved Parker’s penalty as he dived to his right
the deciding action came five minutes into added time.
Substitute Andrews used a quick set of heels to outpace the backline and bear down on goal.
Just as everyone inside the 1st Cloud Arena expected a shot
The stand-in captain banished City’s penalty hoodoo to send the ‘keeper the wrong way and steal all three points for City.
Pandemonium in the away end and on the pitch as City battled hard to come away with a much needed three points.
It’s three points (and a three huge ones at that)
another huge clash on Saturday as we take on Warrington Town on Saturday (3pm).

Plans for a cutting-edge new Extra Care scheme in South Shields have been submitted for approval.
developed and managed by housing association Karbon Homes in partnership with South Tyneside Council
would consist of 124 one and two-bed apartments
designed to help people with differing levels of care and support needs to live well and independently.
located on the corner of Galsworthy Road and Benton Road
on the site of the former Chuter Ede school and community association
has been designed to help address the lack of specialist
affordable accommodation options in the borough
25 of the apartments are specifically designed for people living with dementia
Assistant Director of Development Delivery at Karbon Homes
said: "We're pleased to be submitting this exciting planning proposal for our second Extra Care scheme in South Tyneside
bringing much-needed supported housing to the borough which will enable local people to remain living independently for longer.
"We're looking forward to working with South Tyneside Council to help us deliver the vision for scheme
to create a modern and welcoming place that helps empower people with additional care and support needs to live life to the full
and brings the local community together."
The scheme would be the second Extra Care facility developed by Karbon Homes in partnership with South Tyneside Council
the first being a 96-apartment scheme in Hebburn town centre
which started on site at the end of last year.
The partnership supports the Council's ambitions to build strong communities and help people in South Tyneside to stay well and healthy throughout their lives.
said: "This development is a really exciting concept which would provide much-needed specialist accommodation for adults with care and support needs
as well as integrating modern facilities for local people to use.
"Our residents have been clear that they would rather live as independently as possible than go into residential care
and this extra care facility would enable them to do just that
living right in the heart of their communities with the support they need."
Karbon has worked with Tyne and Wear based JDDK Architects on the design
with high environmental and energy efficiency standards.
The apartments would sit across four-storeys
laid out around a central communal courtyard
Ground floor apartments have access to private patio areas
with upper storey apartments benefitting from balconies
The wider scheme would include a variety of landscaped areas and small quiet gardens.
The proposal is for the heating and hot water to be powered by air source heat pumps
with additional energy generated through roof mounted solar PV panels.
The design has also been guided by the needs of the community
the scheme will be the first of Karbon's Extra Care schemes to have an integrated Community Hub
alongside a bistro café and multi-use spaces for activities open to the general public and community groups
helping to facilitate community cohesion.
Its delivery would be part-funded by Homes England
through Karbon's Strategic Partnership with the Government's housing delivery agency.
This strategic partnership is supporting Karbon to deliver 2,200 new affordable homes across the North East and Yorkshire over the next few years
10% of which will be new homes for people requiring additional support needs.
SearchMatch Report: South Shields 0-0 SouthportNathan BellApr 122 min readSouth Shields were held to a scoreless draw against Southport in their penultimate home game of the season on Saturday
but the outcome was a point which successfully halted Shields’ run of five consecutive defeats in the Vanarama National League North
That result means the Mariners find themselves in 16th place on 53 points
Manager Elliott Dickman handed the young James Sloan his second start
following an impressive shift last time out against Brackley Town
Dillon Morse and Tom Allan were notable entries into the squad
with the first chance falling to Paul Blackett
He received the ball after a nice piece of play from Sloan
as well as player of the match Mackenzie Heaney
Danny Lloyd - who scored against the Mariners in the reverse game back in October - could have repeated the feat in the 14th minute
but Martin Smith did well to prevent his shot going in
Jack Doyle rattled an attempt off the crossbar just a few minutes later
It appeared to be a cagey affair from that point and chances were very few and far between
although Smith and Heaney contributed to chances of note before the break
‘Keeper Chris Renshaw impressed for the visitors to keep the score level as the teams restarted play
with his first save of the second-half being to prevent Alfie Myers-Smith’s chance on goal
Southport's backline was called into action in the 55th minute
after Blackett was sent through on goal by Heaney
and they managed to clear it away for a corner
Will Jenkins almost secured the game for Shields 15 minutes later after a flick-on from Gateshead loanee Allan
following a nicely-timed ball from ex-Heed star Dan Ward
but a bit of Southport pressure meant he couldn’t get on the end of it
Heaney delivered a sweet free-kick into the box around the 80th minute mark
Although the advent of stoppage-time opened the game up
neither team could find the winner they needed and the game ended level
Up next for Dickman’s side is a visit to nearby Darlington on Good Friday

A spirited Farsley Celtic fell to a 3-1 defeat against South Shields on Saturday afternoon in Buxton
The Celts took a surprise lead through Joao Silva but were reduced to 10 men on the half hour mark when Essa Janneh was sent off in conceding a penalty – which was converted by Paul Blackett
Blackett added a second for the visitors before the break before Mackenzie Heaney’s 64th minute effort put the game out of reach for the Celts
Having had the full week to recover after an intensive fixture schedule of late
Farsley looked rejuvenated and after seeing out the opening ten minutes which were largely dominated by the Tynesiders
netted the game’s opening goal on 11 minutes
Tom Broadbent misjudged a ball over the top allowing Silva
who was this week called up to Sao Tome e Principe’s international squad for this month’s forthcoming 2026 World Cup Qualifiers against Equitorial Guniea and Libera
the opportunity to round Kyle Seymour and roll the ball into an unguarded net
to score the club’s first goal since David Stockdale took over as manager
However Shields were gifted a chance to equalise when Blackett was pulled down by Janneh and the referee awarded a disputed penalty given initial contact looked to have started outside the area
To compound things Janneh was shown a red card for denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity
Blackett kept his cool from 12 yards to draw the visitors level on 31 minutes
The away side dealt another hammer blow three minutes before the break as they netted for a second time as Blackett
scored his second of the game by getting a deft touch to Mackenzie Heaney’s cross
Farsley weren’t ceding though and almost snook an equaliser when Justin Iwobi and Silva linked up
with the latter narrowly missing out on a second goal as his attempted lob of Seymour looped just over the crossbar
Will Brook produced a fantastic save on the hour mark as he stretched acrobatically to keep Blackett’s header out though Shields did bag their third goal three minutes later as Heaney diverted Dan Ward’s initial shot past the Farsley goalkeeper to guarantee the victory
Farsley go again next Saturday as they host second-in-the-league Scunthorpe United in another testing clash at Buxton

South Shields claimed all three points in the North-East as a goal in either half from Kyle Crossley and Paul Blackett ended the Seals’ 11-game unbeaten run
After a very quiet start at the 1st Cloud Arena
the hosts had the first big chance through Kyle Crossley
after Dylan Stephenson dispossessed Nathan Woodthorpe just inside the Chester half
The ball fell to Crossley around 15 yards from goal
but his low effort was held by Jimmy Storer in comfortable fashion
The same forward caused more problems for Chester just a few minutes later
when he found himself in behind the Seals’ back line and looked to have a golden chance to open the scoring
Just as he was about to pull the trigger though
Crossley lost his balance while under pressure from Harrison Burke
and his eventual tame effort was straight at Storer
A looped corner from Declan Weeks brought the Seals their first clear sight of goal but Burke’s header flew well over Myles Boney and the home goal
It was a positive first half for the hosts and they took a deserved lead into the break when the ball fell to Crossley on the edge of the box before his strike deflected off a yellow shirt into the back of the net
The change of direction wrong-footed Storer in the Yellows’ net and gave him no chance
as a run of back-to-back clean sheets was halted
Calum McIntyre responded at the interval and made two changes
with the additions of both Dan Mooney and Kev Roberts for Fin Roberts and Jordan Hunter
The Seals went on the offensive after the restart and Connell Rawlinson had an opportunity within a minute of the referee’s whistle but his header was cleared off the line
South Shields almost doubled their advantage soon after but Will Jenkins’ drilled strike rolled just wide of the post
Chester pushed back though and went within inches of an equaliser when Iwan Murray’s strike was cleared off the line
Woodthorpe rushed on to the ball on the left wing before he fed Connor Woods who laid off to Murray but the 24-year-old’s effort was blocked in crucial fashion by Robert Briggs
The Seals’ left-back was involved again just moments later
as Woodthorpe smashed a dangerous strike towards goal that narrowly flew over the bar
Elliott Dickman’s side delivered a sucker-punch in the 79th minute through talisman Paul Blackett
who found himself in space inside the 18-year-box before he finished with power past Storer into the bottom corner
It was the end of Chester’s impressive seven-game victorious streak
after a scrappy affair in the North-East in which South Shields were solid at the back and showed quality going forward to earn all three points
Calum McIntyre’s men return to action on Tuesday for a crucial clash with Kidderminster Harriers down CH1
as both clubs look to bounce back from tough defeats
after Harriers’ home loss to Chorley at Aggborough

North East Mayor Kim McGuinness and the North East Combined Authority have agreed in principle to award up to £18.2 million towards the relocation of South Tyneside College and world-renowned South Shields Marine School
from the Early Capital and Investment Fund
will support the college's move from its current Westoe site into the heart of the town centre
bringing thousands of students and staff into the town centre every day
The funding will enable a start on site later this year
with a view to the new college being ready to welcome students in the 2027 September intake
North East Mayor Kim McGuinness said: "Bringing South Tyneside College and the world-renowned Marine School to the town centre will transform South Shields and be a catalyst for new investment

more than 80% of people who responded supported the idea of the college relocation
believing it would lead to a livelier town centre and help to sustain new and existing businesses
And the Association of Colleges and the High Streets Commission have both found that colleges play an important role in driving footfall
said: "This is the final piece of the funding jigsaw
which means the next step will be work getting underway

Planning permission has been granted for the 14,000 square metre main building
student accommodation block and the refurbishment of a listed building on Barrington Street
and Hebburn-based contractor Castle Building has been appointed
The main building will be accessed on King Street
with a double-height glass atrium behind the reception entrance. A second entrance will be provided along Barrington Street
and a refurbished Grade-II-listed building will accommodate staff facilities
bringing a vacant building back into use.
said: "Our relocation will play a key role in boosting local business
equipping people with the work and life skills they need to succeed and supporting the economic growth of the region
"It will ensure the long-term viability of the college and our internationally-respected Marine School and generations of future learners will benefit from the most modern and high-quality facilities."

SearchMatch Report: Rushall Olympic 2-1 South ShieldsNathan BellMar 302 min readSouth Shields fell to a 2-1 defeat away from home against relegation-threatened Rushall Olympic on Saturday
An own goal brought Shields back into the game after Louis Hall had given the hosts the lead
though it wasn’t enough and Aaron Forde sent the home supporters away happy
Shields started off the game the brighter of the two sides
with the first chance falling to starting debutant Ewan McGowan
whose shot on goal was blocked out for a corner within 10 minutes
McGowan did excellently to send Paul Blackett through on goal just after
pulled off a confident save to deny one of the league’s top goalscorers
Austin Samuels handed the hosts their first real opportunity when he fired a cross into the box
but it just missed the head of the anticipating Rushall Olympic attacker
Youngster Alfie Myers-Smith was taken off in the 27th minute through injury and he was replaced by Bryan Taylor
who has recently rejoined the first-team squad following his loan spell at Redcar Athletic
A nice piece of play just before the half-time whistle saw the likes of Martin Smith and Kyle Crossley get involved; the Mariners were arguably unlucky not to have taken the lead
Coleby Shepherd prevented what was a surefire one-on-one in the 65th minute for Rushall Olympic’s Luke Benbow
Shields were left stunned five minutes later when the hosts took the lead - a superb ball up the field was delivered to Theo Williams
who launched a ball over the goalmouth to find the sliding Hall
potential disaster could have struck when Brad Bood was red carded for a high challenge
The resulting free-kick drew the visitors level
but it wasn’t long before that parity was wiped out
Forde ran through on goal before rounding Kyle Seymour and slotting the ball into an empty net
Moloney thwarted Shepherd’s stoppage-time rocket
which stood every chance of finding the back of the net
Shields couldn’t find the leveller they needed and they went home empty-handed
The Mariners find themselves in 15th place in the Vanarama National League North table
with just five games of the season remaining

A look back at Saturday’s success…

HARRIERS hit South Shields for five on Saturday to complete a remarkable league double in National League North
Phil Brown’s charges had already seen off Shields with an emphatic 4-0 win in the reverse fixture at Aggborough earlier in the season
and went one better at the 1st Cloud Area with a ruthless performance to extend a recent good run of form
Harriers were in all honesty dominant from the off
Home goalkeeper Kyle Seymour had already saved a 12th-minute Ashley Hemmings header when
he was helpless to prevent Kyle Morrison’s bullet header from cannoning in off the bar for 1-0
but struck wide with one effort before Seymour denied him with a smart save on the latter
It was 2-0 on 37 minutes courtesy of a goal made by the iconic Harriers duo – Amari Morgan-Smith playing in Hemmings who had time to compose himself and take a touch in the area before sweeping the ball into the far corner
The visitors will have known to expect a big reaction from their hosts after half time so themselves immediately stepped on the gas again – Hemmings sending a header just inches wide of the target within 30 seconds or so
taking the ball superbly in his stride before dispatching a shot with too much power for Seymour’s touch to prevent it finding the net
52 minutes were on the clock when Worrall’s free kick was nodded back across goal by Morrison
Hemmings applying the finishing touch with a neat header of his own to beat Seymour once more
Four minutes later Kouhyar and Hemmings both had chances to add a fifth before the latter did so
completing his hat-trick in outrageous style to tuck home another loose ball with an overhead kick that bounced in the net
South Shields went close to pulling a goal back when Dibble saved well from Martin Smith before
another sub in Dylan Stephenson slotted wide of the far corner on the angle
Reiss McNally almost nudged in a sixth for Harriers from close range
