A collection of stone sculptures carved by Graeme Mitcheson
The life-sized sculptures can be found in the old cattle and sheep markets
They celebrate the farming heritage of the Lincolnshire town
The sculptures include seven Lincolnshire Longwool sheep carved from white Cadeby limestone
There is also a Lincoln Red bull and heifer carved from Cove Red sandstone
The bull was carved from blocks weighing almost seven tonnes at Graeme’s Leicestershire workshop before being transported and installed in Spalding.
Reflecting on what drew him to the project
“I have been creating art in public spaces
The sculptures in Spalding were to be located in the old cattle market and the old sheep market areas of the town.
“These sites were incredibly significant in the development of Spalding as a market town
and I was excited to be asked to develop ideas to celebrate this heritage.”
I wanted to re-create the hustle and bustle of hundreds of sheep being shepherded through the town
I tried to create as many sheep as the budget would allow
The sheep are a distinctive Lincolnshire Longwool variety
I used white Cadeby limestone to create these.
I simply wanted to represent the sheer size and heft of these fantastic animals
Each sculpture was carved from an initial seven tonne block of stone
I worked with a Lincoln Red cattle farmer who allowed me to take photographs and measurements of his cattle
The heifer was called Mary la Fontaine and the enormous bull’s name was Walmer Talent.”
When asked about his future public art plans in Lincolnshire and beyond he said:
“I am hosting a number of community workshops in the coming weeks as part of the project
Local groups will be attending stone carving sessions and will be encouraged to carve their own cows and sheep!”
Since graduating from Loughborough in 1995
Graeme has created numerous artworks all over the UK
His work includes a number of memorial sculptures at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire
a memorial to former England football manager Sir Bobby Robson
and most recently a series of sculptures in Caernarfon Castle in North Wales.

delivered in partnership with Lincolnshire Police and the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC)
aims to tackle anti-social behaviour and improve public confidence through a series of additional dedicated
It will provide an increased number of targeted police patrols in key identified areas of the town centre
looking to reduce anti-social and criminal activity
engage with the local community and businesses and help residents feel safer and more supported in the town
Funding for the project will come from capacity funding allocated to Spalding under the Government's Plan for Neighbourhoods initiative
to test its effectiveness for consideration of its longer-term extension and resourcing as part of the town's investment plan
which will be submitted to government later this year
The pilot would build on the Home Office funded hot-spot activities currently taking place in 12 areas across Lincolnshire
The proposed area for the patrols to cover goes across much of Spalding town centre
targeting spots identified by residents and authorities as being more common for anti-social or criminal activity
leader of South Holland District Council said: "Ensuring that Spalding is a safe and welcoming places for its residents
businesses and visitors is a key priority for the council
and we are delighted to support this pilot programme to help make that happen
"This is an important opportunity to explore the positive impact that additional policing resources can bring
and will provide valuable evidence as we make plans on how to best use the Plan for Neighbourhoods government funding over the next ten years to make Spalding a better place to live
said: "I am delighted that we can use some of the government's early capacity funding to really begin to test some highly visible and meaningful investments on the ground in Spalding
This pilot scheme puts us in a position to be able to respond positively and proactively to some of the concerns we have heard about from our local communities which we hope will improve how we all use
"We want to make sure that with the partnership support of the Town Board and District Council these increased foot patrols will not only reduce incidences of crime and antisocial behaviour but also improve feelings of community safety and security throughout the town
We can then continue to build upon this through our regeneration plan for Spalding over the next decade."
Police and Crime Commissioner for Lincolnshire
said: "The current programme of hotspot policing
has already proved invaluable in keeping our communities safe from harm
"The deal with the council and town board will be an important extension to the project and I welcome the opportunity to work with partners to widen the street patrols
"It is another excellent example of how
we can deliver better services for the people of Lincolnshire."

The second phase of improvements to Spalding’s footway and cycleway links will start in early February
The proposed start date for the works is Monday 3 February for up to nine weeks
we extended and resurfaced the existing shared-use path on Holbeach Road and we’re now ready to carry out the next phase of this important project.
we’ll be further improving connections to the Springfield Outlet area by building a brand-new 240-metre link along the Coronation Bank from Holbeach Road to the shopping outlet car park
“The overall aim of this project is to provide people with safer
more reliable sustainable travel options in Spalding
We’re doing this by improving connectivity via the area’s footways and cycleways
which will hopefully encourage more people to leave their cars at home to walk or cycle instead.”
the following traffic management will be in place:
Cllr Davies added: “We don’t expect there to be much disruption caused by these works
there may be times when the footpath and/or the northern A151 footway will need to be closed
and we ask anyone using this route to follow any posted signs.”
The second phase of Spalding Active Travel improvement project is expected to cost £288,000
which will be funded by a portion of the £20m in funding awarded to the county council by Government in October 2021.
The remaining funding is being used across other four projects
including improvements to Spalding’s A16/A151 Springfield Roundabout and A16/B1180 Greencell Roundabout

Unite the union has made a formal complaint to the ETI
Bakkavor has become the subject of an ethical trading complaint, following months of strike action among employees at its Spalding factory
Unite the union has made a formal complaint on behalf of its Spalding members to the Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI)
which ensures compliance with international labour standards in the global supply chains of member companies
Workers at the Lincolnshire factory have been on strike since September after rejecting Bakkavor’s offer of a 7.8% pay increase to its lowest-paid colleagues and 6.4% across all other grades
In November, Bakkavor offered workers a £350 bonus to end the strike.
However, continued action resulted in a shortage of chilled dips, soups and pasta sauces in the supermarkets ahead of Christmas.
Despite the supply chain disruption, the manufacturer grew revenue by 4% to £2.2bn last year, with sales up 5.2% to £1.9bn in the UK.
Bakkavor has brought in “strike-breakers” from its other sites instead of engaging in “meaningful negotiations” with its Spalding staff
“Bakkavor’s utter unwillingness to negotiate and to attempt to break a lawful strike has left Unite with no choice,” said Unite GM Sharon Graham
“Not only are we telling their customers about their unethical behaviour
but we will be targeting any company that continues to do business with them,” she said
Bakkavor CEO Mike Edwwards: “As highlighted in our trading update
despite their continued strike action in the face of a very strong and improved final offer that has been put on the table
“As with their run of emotive and false claims - for example
‘years of real term pay cuts’ and that ‘the majority of the workforce only earn 10p above the National Living Wage’ - their new tactic of claiming that we are breaching ethical trading regulations is also untrue
CPI in the UK has grown by 21%: At our Spalding site over the same three-year period
the pay rate has risen by between 21.2% and 22.8% for colleagues - above inflation for the period
we think it useful to confirm as a matter of fact that the cost of labour at Spalding is the highest across all our UK sites - something that sits at the very heart of the problem with Unite’s position on this matter
“Given our significant efforts to engage in meaningful negotiations and the strong offer we put forward
Unite’s ongoing calls for rejection made it obvious that the 2024 collective bargaining process was exhausted
we lawfully proceeded to offer colleagues the proposed pay offer on an individual basis.”

The new displays are designed to last for 10 years and will stretch across the town centre and Market Place
down Francis Street and Hole in the Wall and extending into The Crescent
a key area that businesses and residents have requested to see lit up in recent years.
Investment in the look and attractiveness of the high street
especially tying in with events that bring more footfall

Among the new decorations will be almost 40 column displays that will stretch across the street

noticeable impact from this significant piece of government funding

and that this covers a much wider variety of topics and issues than new Christmas lights alone
we also recognise the importance of making the town somewhere appealing and attractive
where residents and visitors can come together to celebrate and enjoy events and support our local traders and businesses
By acting on this feedback to introduce new
we are confident that we can help contribute towards this ambition."
said: "The Spalding Town Board is committed to working with the community to make a difference for the town
"Our consultation in the summer showed us that whilst there is pride in many aspects of Spalding
there is also a clear desire for a better town centre experience with people wanting to see improvements
"Funding the Christmas lights is just one small but significant way in which we can add to the town centre's appeal
and ensure that everyone coming into Spalding during this festive season

(Atlanta News First) - A Spalding County couple accused of intentionally starving and abusing their adoptive son have taken a non-negotiated plea deal and were sentenced to decades in prison on Thursday
Krista and Tyler Schindley were sentenced to 40 years in prison and 20 years of probation
Both were also sentenced on several other charges that will run concurrently with the prison and probation sentencing
“I’ve seen people do heinous things to each other,” Judge Benjamin Coker with the Griffin Judicial Circuit said at the sentencing
‘I’ve never seen a human being who would do what you two did to another human being.’”
The Schindleys pleaded guilty to four counts of first-degree cruelty to children
one count of criminal attempt to commit felony
one count of aggravated battery and one count of family violence battery
Krista also pleaded guilty to three additional charges of aggravated assault
The couple was arrested in May 2023 after a neighbor found their visibly malnourished 10-year-old child wandering around the neighborhood
Griffin police described the boy as “thin with discolored skin and visible injuries.” Investigators said he weighed just 36 pounds when they examined him
the parents intentionally withheld food from their son and often locked him in his bedroom with no access to food
Court documents suggest that the Schindleys not only abused their son
leaving “dental injuries” and “disfiguration,” but did so in the presence of other minors in the home
“There wasn’t a dry eye in that courthouse when the sentence was handed down,” Griffin Judicial Circuit District Attorney Marie Broder said

Scunthorpe United can confirm today’s scheduled Lincolnshire Senior Cup encounter at Spalding United is now not going ahead
with the Iron receiving a bye to the final as our opposition withdraw from the competition
In a joint statement released by the Lincolnshire FA and our opponents
they state: "Lincolnshire FA regrets to announce that Spalding United have withdrawn from the County Senior Cup
meaning Scunthorpe United will now receive an automatic bye into the final
The semi-final fixture was scheduled to take place tomorrow evening
and the Association had worked closely with both clubs
as we do with all teams in County Cup competitions
Spalding United have made the decision to withdraw from the competition today
having felt they were not in a position to fulfil the fixture due to difficulties raising a squad
Whilst we are disappointed the fixture will not go ahead
The draw for the semi-finals was conducted on Thursday 21st November 2024
giving all clubs involved over three months to arrange their fixtures on a mutually agreeable date
this date was the only available option for both teams
all fixtures in the County Senior Cup must be completed by the end of February to ensure a March Final
This rule is in place to support clubs and help avoid potential play-off or relegation fixture clashes later in the season
While Spalding United had looked to rearrange the fixture for March
this falls outside of the end of February cut-off date
To maintain the integrity of the County Cup competitions
and to ensure the competition schedule – as agreed by the clubs - runs as planned
we must follow the rules outlined in the competition rulebook
irrespective of which cup competition this falls in
Lincolnshire FA remains committed to supporting all clubs participating in County Cup competitions and ensuring the smooth and fair running of the competition
We now look forward to the County Senior Cup Final
where Scunthorpe United will compete for the trophy
