Oxford City slipped to a narrow 1-0 defeat to Spennymoor Town on the final day in the 2024/25 National League North season
Corey McKeown’s strike on the stroke of half-time decided an even game
but if it wasn’t for in-form Goalkeeper Brad James
the result could’ve been very different
It was a youthful Oxford City squad that travelled to the North East
with Phil Croker and Jayden Carbon starting.Elsewhere
sixteen-year-old Kauan Bitencourt De Oliveira was on the bench alongside Josh McConnell and Tom Russell who were recalled from their loans at Kidlington and Ardley United respectively
Spennymoor came into this game with the faintest chance of making the play-offs
and they started quickly but Oxford City survived an early spell of pressure
they were the better team in the first-half
Josh Ashby was hard-done by to see his fierce shot well-saved by Brad James
and Croker was agonisingly close to poking Aaron Drewe’s shot into the net after great work from the wing back
Canice Carroll was also centre stage with five minutes to go when he made a superb sliding challenge to deny Corey McKeown
The defining goal came right on the stroke of half-time
Corey McKeown turned with space on the edge of the box and sent a shot past McKenzie-Lyle against the run of play
Half-Time: Spennymoor Town 1-0 Oxford City
but they couldn’t find the all-important goal – no matter how hard they tried
Josh Ashby would’ve been sick of the sight of Spennymoor ‘keeper James
as he tipped his shot over the crossbar seconds after the re-start
and then produced a stunning save to tip his fierce drive over the bar after the hour mark
but a steadfast Spennymoor defence stood in their way
Kai McKenzie-Lyle produced a magnificent save to deny Glen Taylor whilst he was 1v1 with the ‘keeper
which kept Ross Jenkins’ side in the game
but couldn’t find the target as his curling shot crashed off the woodwork
The introduction of sixteen year old De Oliveira gave City another attacking option in the dying moments
but it was a defender who almost snatched a point for City
powered forward but when he wiggled through to the edge of the box
The last word goes to the superb travelling faithful who made the mammoth journey and could be heard all around The Brewery Field

Following last weekend’s disappointing defeat at the hands of Radcliffe
the Iron were back on home soil for today’s fixture in the National League North
United were recharged and ready to take on a play-off hunting Spennymoor Town side who came into the fixture full of confidence following their recent FA Trophy endeavours
With regards to Scunthorpe’s team news for the encounter
first-team manager Andy Butler opted to make one singular alteration to the side from the previous match with Irish forward Carlton Ubaezuonu dropping to the bench in what was a straight swap for talented Gambian winger Mo Fadera
who was handed just his third start in claret and blue to try and break down the Moors defence
As proceedings were set underway at the Attis Arena
United immediately got to work grinding down the Spennymoor backline with a relentless period of sustained attack that would present several chances for Scunthorpe’s attacking trio
The first of these chances would be crafted by the previously mentioned Fadera who broke down the left-flank with less than five minutes on the clock
After completing his signature chop inside to glide beyond a covering defender
the winger attempted to ark a finessed effort into the top corner that soared marginally wide of the goalkeepers far post
As the game reached the five-minute mark it had been all Scunthorpe
and another opportunity would arise for them to give themselves a more than deserved lead
This time it would be star man Cal Roberts to test the Moors defence as he was cleverly slotted in behind courtesy of a fantastic through ball
With possession landing perfectly at the feet of Roberts inside the area
he attempted to flash a clear-cut shot towards Rohan Luthra that failed to trouble the keeper as it flew wide of the mark
With United’s onslaught of the Spennymoor goal continuing
it was becoming increasingly obvious that the first goal of the game was only a matter of time away
It would finally arrive in the 18th minute when Fadera came inside from the left before teeing the ball up for inform right-back Michael Kelly
with the ball setting up kindly following his first touch Kelly would strike across the ball with a brilliant daisy cutter that arrowed towards Luthra
the effort was hit with such quality that it evaded the shot stoppers desperate attempt to claw the ball away and nestled in the net to give the Iron the lead
With half an hour gone the Moors would mount an attempt for an equaliser when left-back Reece Staunton set off on a marauding run down the left-hand side
With nothing but green grass to explore Staunton would attempt to hang a pinpoint cross into the penalty area where Corey McKeown’s lurking run at the back post was undetected
the ball would find McKeown leaving him with a simple header from close range that he somehow could only steer wide of the post
With the half coming to its close the Iron would come close to doubling their lead when a loose ball landed at the feet of Tyler Denton on the edge of the Spennymoor box
Denton and Kelly are often competing for their place on the field but on this occasion
they were competing for goal of the day as the left-back brought down the ball and sent a stunning volleyed effort at goal that was flying toward the top corner
this was until the last gasp intervention of Luthra who palmed the ball away from the target with a fine save
When the teams returned to the field of play for the second half the Iron were made to weather the storm in the early exchanges but would return to the front foot rather quickly with another swift forward-thinking attack
It was end-to-end from Scunthorpe who defended valiantly to keep the Moors at bay
before Denton was released quickly down the left-hand side with just Joe Rowley ahead of him in support
he received a sensational lofted pass from Denton to send him in behind and through on goal
Still under pressure from the recovering Ben Beals
Rowley raced into the penalty area and set himself to pull the trigger
this was until Beals produced an outstanding tackle from behind to diffuse the situation
the visitors would have their best chance yet to draw level when they were almost rewarded for their persistence in attack
It was former Middlesbrough academy man Junior Mondal who tested Ross Fitzsimons as he robbed possession 20 yards from goal and attempted to fire a low driven effort into the bottom corner that was comfortably dealt with by the calm and collected Fitzsimons
As the second half progressed the Iron continued to battle against their opponents and refused to surrender the advantage they’d worked so hard to protect
Despite doing a lot of hanging on United would reap their rewards in the closing stages by doubling their advantage thanks to a goal from substitute Carlton Ubaezuonu
the forward would brilliantly skin his marker with a subtle turn of pace allowing him with the space to let fly
As soon as the curling effort left his weaker right-foot the Attis Arena erupted as it always looked like finding the bottom corner
as Ubaezuonu scored his fifth league goal of the campaign to send the Scunthorpe faithful into the rafters
This would be the final action of the fixture as the hard work and determination of Butler’s Iron shone through in abundance to earn them another massive three points in the hunt for promotion with just three crucial fixtures remaining

How better to cap it off than a mammoth journey 496-mile round journey to Spennymoor Town
Hoops fans won't forget the late season revival
and perhaps the fact that the team come into this game without the added pressure of a one-game relegation shootout
and the three teams above them in the table all slip-up
the Hoops will end the season in 15th - the highest position they'll have been in throughout the entire 2024/25 season
Victory for City at Spennymoor (and results going their way) could leave them with a 15th placed finish
it'll be the highest City have been placed in the league all season
Three wins in their last five league games against Warrington Town
Curzon Ashton and South Shields have kept the play-off dream alive
they'll need a win as an absolute minimum against City with defeats elsewhere for Chorley
Hereford and Curzon AND anything other than a win for Buxton in their final games to qualify for the end of season knockout.
It was a memorable day at the MGroup Stadium as City marked the festive period with a dominant 3-0 win over Saturday's opponents
Exciting attacker Junior Mondal signed on at The Brewery Field following his departure from Whiby Town in the summer
A graduate of Middlesbrough’s Academy
Mondal joined The Teessiders when he was just 11 and went on to take up a scholarship with the club in 2013
and he began to feature for Boro’s Under-21 side as they won the Premier League Division 2 title in 2014/15
Mondal’s senior breakthrough arrived in 2016/17 when he made three appearances in the League Cup
but he moved on at the end of the season and signed for Moors that summer before joining Whitby on a dual registration
Mondal earned a move to the EFL with Forest Green Rovers in 2019 and also played for AFC Fylde and Darlington before playing under Moors boss Graeme Lee at Marske United
He returned to Whitby in 2023 and was one of the standout performers last term
scoring important goals against Chelmsford City and Bristol Rovers as The Seasiders enjoyed a memorable run to the First Round Proper of the FA Cup
Graeme Lee was appointed as the new First Team Manager of Spennymoor Town in January 2024 after stepping down from his previous role in charge of Marske United
Born in Middlesbrough into a football family
Graeme Lee went on to carve out a successful playing career in the Football League duringwhich he made over 500 senior appearances
he came through the ranks at Hartlepool United where he made a debut in 1995 at the age of just 17 whenappearing as a substitute against Arsenal in the League Cup
Unfazed by coming up against the likes of Ian Wright and Dennis Bergkamp
Lee quickly established himself in the Pools back four and was a core part of the team as they reached the League Two play-offs three seasonsin a row
Lee recovered from a serious knee injury to be a virtual ever-present in the heart of the defence as Pools finally clinched automaticpromotion when they finished runners-up in 2002/03
His dominant and classy performances meant that Pools boss Chris Turner took him to Sheffield Wednesday when he was appointed boss at Hillsborough and Lee was Player of the Year in his debut campaign
The Owls bounced back from relegation to win promotion with a Play-Off Final win in 2004/05 – ironically beating Lee’s former sideHartlepool at The Millennium Stadium – though missed the game through injury
He moved onto Doncaster Rovers in 2006 and he clinched a place in the Club’s history books when he captained the side to the EFL TrophyFinal in 2007 and scored the winning goal to land the silverware
Loans at Hartlepool and Shrewsbury Town followed before Lee made a permanent switch to Bradford City in 2008 and then Notts County in 2009 where he went on to win another promotion
In 2011 he agreed a deal to join Darlington
but financial problems soon beset The Quakers and he left in January 2012 to play the remainder of the season at Celtic Nation before retirement
Hometown club Middlesbrough offered him the opportunity to cut his teeth in coaching with a position in their much-celebrated Academy and Lee never looked back
He spent over a decade working in various roles within the Boro set-up before being unveiled as Lead Coach for the club’s Under-23s in2019
ambition burned deeply inside Lee and when the opportunity arose for him to take up the challenge as Manager of HartlepoolUnited in 2021
he could not turn down a return to his former club
Filling the shoes of promotion-winning boss Dave Challinor was a tough ask
Lee got stuck in and led the team to the semi-finals of theEFL Trophy as well as a memorable to the FA Cup Fourth Round where almost 5,000 travelling fans saw them beaten at Premier League Crystal Palace
Fans were surprised when Lee parted company with the club after less than six months in charge but his appetite to prove himself wasundiminished and he reemerged in charge of Marske United last summer
Financial problems at Mount Pleasant made the job a tricky one but Lee persevered and gave the club’s supporters something to smile about over Christmas as victories over Ashton United and Guiseley helped lift them out of the danger zone
Lee’s appointment as boss at The Brewery Field means he is following in the footsteps of his legendary father Tony
who was manager ofSpennymoor United in the early-2000s

SearchMatch Report: South Shields 0-2 Spennymoor TownNathan BellApr 223 min readSouth Shields were defeated 2-0 by Isuzu FA Trophy finalists Spennymoor Town at 1st Cloud Arena on Easter Monday
Goals by Corey McKeown and ex-Shields loanee Aidan Rutledge gave the travelling Moors support something extra to celebrate
it was Shields who almost had the dream start - Paul Blackett surged through on goal within two minutes of the start and Will Jenkins narrowly missed the ball as he slid to try and connect with it
An acrobatic finish by skipper Robert Briggs saw his effort from a corner go over the bar
tried his best but his shot at goal was comfortably claimed by Spennymoor ‘keeper
It would be the visitors who would score first
and to their credit it was an exquisite piece of play
Shields were left vulnerable as the Moors passed it around the box
to slot it past Kyle Seymour in the 16th minute
Seymour was called into action almost five minutes later to thwart Ramshaw's powerful strike
Matty Dolan followed suit with a glancing shot of his own
and although Shields retained the ball well
they were unable to do very much in front of goal with it - at least in the early stages
the Moors broke through and Coleby Shepherd did excellently to clear Junior Mondal’s opportunity off the line
Momentum did appear to shift in the Mariners’ favour as the second-half went on
and a very tidy piece of play involving Shepherd
Blackett and Mackenzie Heaney almost resulted in a dream goal for Shields’ top goalscorer
Blackett’s shot just fell wide and it could be argued that the team were so unfortunate not to have scored from it
David Carson combined superbly with second-half substitute Dan Ward on the right-hand side
as the latter sent a cross into the six-yard box
he couldn’t make enough contact and Spennymoor managed to clear it out
from a similar position to that of McKeown when he scored
but this time it went just past the goalmouth
The home pressure was ramping up but they couldn’t get the goal they needed to drag them back into the game
Things were soon taken out of doubt when Rutledge was brought on for Spennymoor - within a few minutes he had claimed
a penalty after Seymour had brought him down
The ex-Mariner stepped up confidently and slotted it into the back of the net
Yesterday's defeat means that Elliott Dickman’s side remain in 17th place in the Vanarama National League North table
with their final game of the season away against Marine coming this Saturday

Oxford City recorded a convincing victory to round off their 2024 home campaign in style
after they beat Spennymoor Town 3-0 at the MGroup Stadium
and Kai McKenzie-Lyle between the sticks was rarely troubled
The closest Spennymoor came to scoring was in the dying minutes when Rob Ramshaw's fierce volley stung the palms of Mckenzie-Lyle
A Glen Taylor double sealed Sutton United’s exit from the Isuzu FA Trophy
with Spennymoor Town coming out the victors at the quarter-final stage
Taylor gave Spennymoor the lead on the quarter-hour mark after being picked out by a fantastic long ball from Ben Beals
before getting the ball under control with one touch and powering it into the bottom corner with his second
A swap at half time seemed to inject plenty of intensity in the U’s attack with Dillon De Silva replacing Eduino Vaz
with the Sri Lanka international producing a number of extremely promising openings that forced Spennymoor to twice clear off the line
Taylor once again struck with just six minutes remaining to give them a two-goal cushion
getting on the end of a long through ball before nicking the ball past Sims to secure their place in the semi-final
Defeat at the hands of Spennymoor brings their FA Trophy journey to an end
and they will be looking to bounce back with another quick turnaround that sees them return to Vanarama National League action with a trip to Solihull Moors on Tuesday night
Six changes to the starting line-up saw Tyler French
Siju Odelusi and Besart Topallaj miss out due to suspension
while Jack Taylor was cup-tied for the clash with Spennymoor having featured in the FA Trophy earlier on in the season whilst on loan with Hampton & Richmond Borough
Ashley Nadesan and Will Davies replaced Dillon De Silva
Nana Boateng and Vinnie Tume from Tuesday’s National League Cup victory over Manchester United
The visitors almost scored a shock early opener when Jackson gave away possession in a dangerous position
allowing Spennymoor captain Taylor to bear down on goal
The 34-year old found space to send a low cross into the middle where Hayden Muller almost tapped into his own net
but fortunately saw his touch send the ball over the crossbar for a corner
This was preceded by a glorious chance for Sutton
who were looking to grab a foothold of proceedings
Nadesan did well on the right flank to find space for a cross of his own
picking out Davies in the middle who forced Brad James into a fantastic outstretched save to keep the score level
as Beals sent a superb long ball over the top towards Taylor
who took a touch and calmly volleyed the ball past Jack Sims to give the National League North side the lead
Taylor nearly scored a second soon after with a speculative drive from the halfway line after Sutton had sloppily given away possession in midfield
the visitors proved tough to break down and Sutton struggled to produce any real clear chances of note as the clock ticked towards the interval
it was Graeme Lee’s side who went closest next
with Reece Staunton picking out Corey McKeown who struck a powerful volley goalward from close range
with Sims at his best to produce a brilliant point blank save
With time running out at the end of the first half
the U’s seemed set to go again after the break
but they were able to produce their best chance of the half in the last minute of stoppage time
Lewis Simper’s cross from the left flew as far as Coley at the far post
who took the ball down and teed up the approaching Jackson
fizzing drive that whistled past the far post
and thus brought an end to the opening 45 minutes
A switch on the flank at the break saw De Silva replace Vaz
and the Sri Lanka international almost had an instant impact on proceedings
The former Queens Park Rangers man drove down the wing before sending a deep cross towards Coley at the back post
who knocked it back across goal and looked to be creeping over the line for an early leveller
but Beals was somehow able to recover and clear off the line for Spennymoor
This was followed by another promising attack led by De Silva
who once again raced towards goal before sending a low cross towards Nadesan in the middle
but James was able to get down to gather it before he could get there
preventing a certain tap-in for the on-loan Gillingham man
Another attacking change saw Alex Woodyard replaced by Jack Wadham on the hour-mark
although it was their counterpart Simper who came close to a leveller moments later
A short corner played to the U’s number eight allowed him to brilliantly evade Callum Ross on the edge of the box
before sending a bending effort towards the near post that was only denied by another excellent outstretched stop from James
Spennymoor almost then made the hosts pay when Dan Rowe met Matty Dolan’s corner
but Sims was able to gather at the second attempt and keep Sutton alive
allowing them to go up the other end and produce another excellent chance
De Silva proved to be the danger men since entering the fray
and was once again at the heartbeat of the U’s attacking play
doing well to reach the byline before tapping the ball back across goal
where Nadesan was unable to bury his cutback with Spennymoor somehow able to clear off the line for a second time
Sutton continued to huff and puff in their search for a goal
but Spennymoor were defending superbly well and frustrating the hosts
to the extent that they closest they came to a second goal came from Dolan attempting to catch Sims out off his line
with his strike from his own half flying wide of the target
with Coley’s last action of proceedings being a wonderful weaving run that took him to the byline
before being replaced by Nana Boateng with nine minutes to go
The forward wouldn’t have time to stamp his authority on the game though
with a through ball slicing open Sutton’s defence to pick out Taylor
who nicked the ball past Sims to double Spennymoor’s advantage with six minutes remaining
and all but secure their passage into the last four

which consisted of three losses and a draw
Lee made a profound impact at The Brewery Field

after winning 13 out of their last 18 league matches
Lee’s efforts were rewarded as he was recognised as National League North Manager of the Month for February and March

Glen Taylor enters this clash in fine form after netting five times in his last two matches
A three-goal haul on the weekend against Rushall Olympic took his tally of the season to double figures

the Englishman is entering the twilight of a prolific career in Non-League football
The forward is close to surpassing 400 games for the club after rejoining back in 2015

A memorable night at the Deva Stadium saw the Seals go level on points with the top of the National League North as a late goal claimed all three points against Spennymoor Town.
Dan Mooney, who re-joined the Blues just hours before the contest, showed composure to finish well past Brad James in the away goal to cause carnage down CH1.
Connor Woods miscued the first effort of the night as the ball fell to him just inside the box but the ball spun away from the top corner.
It was a quiet contest at the Deva Stadium, with limited goal-mouth action inside the first 30 minutes.
Kurt Willoughby had the first major chance just after the half-hour mark when he sent a drilled strike towards goal from close-range but he thwarted by a fine save from Brad James.
James was involved again as the interval neared, when the shot-stopper pushed a Declan Weeks free-kick on to the foot of Jack Bainbridge who smashed just over on the half-volley.
Bainbridge also had the first opportunity for the Blues in the second period when he shot from range but the goalkeeper was equal to it.
A dangerous, low corner from the visitors caused slight panic inside the Chester box, but an organised Seals defence managed to clear, before Glen Taylor had another chance in quick succession but he dragged his drilled free-kick wide of Jimmy Storer’s goal.
Harrison Burke had netted in his last three outings before this one and he came agonisingly close to a fourth on the bounce with a glanced effort that forced James into an impressive stop.
Calum McIntyre made two additions to his squad before the match, and one had a second debut to remember under the lights.
Dan Mooney was re-introduced to the Blues faithful with around half an hour left on the clock, and it’s safe to say he left an impression on the contest.
In the 82nd minute Nathan Woodthorpe hit a powerful, dangerous strike that looked destined to land in the far corner, but it struck the post and bounced back to Mooney.
The 25-year-old curled a low finish into the bottom corner, a moment that caused bedlam all over the Deva Stadium.
The Blues kept it tight for the final few moments to claim a memorable victory, and three points that lifted the Seals level with Kidderminster Harriers at the top of the National League North, before a trip to Scarborough Athletic on Saturday.
CHESTER FC: Storer, K. Roberts, Burke, Rawlinson, Woodthorpe, Weeks, Bainbridge, Murray, Woods (Mottley-Henry 75′), Willoughby (Mooney 62′), Peers.
