PREVIEW All connected with Forfar Athletic hope that as predicted the remnants of Storm Eowyn which to be fair has not hit Angus to date as bad as other areas will have passed on by tomorrow and that the vital home William Hill League2 game against Stranraer at the Alpha Projects Stadium @ Station Park will go ahead in reasonable weather conditions
Certainly at present no inspection of pitch or overhead conditions is anticipated or planned
It is without doubt a very important game for both sides who there is no hiding that fact
as they sit currently in the bottom two places in the league table
A victory for Stuart Morrison and his colleagues will see them reach the same points tally as their opponents whom they meet again at Stair Park on Tuesday week and the home side will go into the game with the knowledge that Stranraer are one of two teams that they have defeated on home ‘turf’ during this league campaign to date
Max Guthrie gave Chris Aitken’s side a first half lead
Nathan Cannon netting a deserved equaliser before the break
Blair Malcolm the scorer of the second half counter on the day which secured a 2-1 win for the ‘Loons.’ Manager Jim Weir acknowledges as always that a tough ninety minutes awaits for his side
He is delighted that Russell McLean will return from injury
but the game will come a week too early for Craig Slater
Adam Hutchinson will also require a pre-match fitness check
Jim is working hard behind the scenes to augment the Station Park squad but as many other managers who have also been quoted in a similar vein
is finding the current open registration window a tough one with it would appear few of the type of player he is looking for readily available
He was delighted to bring in Marley Sweenie-Rowe this week on loan from Dundee
the left sided defender having impressed on loan to Highland League Fraserburgh in the first half of the campaign
that stint at Bellslea ending with an accomplished performance in the glare of the television cameras at Ibrox on Sunday past
The other new face in the ranks to date this month Mackenzie Lemon will also be in the squad for Saturday’s clash
Stranraer who have brought in goalkeeper Scott Kane on a temporary transfer from Queens Park this month have only been in January match action on two occasions
before being on the wrong end of a 2-0 score line at home to league leaders East Fife last weekend
The ‘Loons’ will certainly go into the contest keen to quickly put the memory of a disappointing cup performance at Cove firmly behind them and the management team hope to see a return to the pre-Christmas home league form when we blew Bonnyrigg away and came so close to what would have been a deserved win over a strong Peterhead side
Jim is also keen that the players put on a show for the watching Brash family and a few Station Park legends of the past who will be in attendance as the club officially recognises just prior to kick-off Alex’s sad passing and contribution over a 12 year period to the Forfar Athletic cause
Hopefully the Forfar faithful will turn out in numbers and in good time both to pay their own tribute to Alex and then get right behind the current Station Park squad as they have done to such a healthy degree throughout the campaign despite results not being as many would have hoped for
the first time he has handled a ‘Loons’ league fixture this season

A football fan from Stranraer says he needed "20 stitches in the back of my head" after he was attacked with a nailed hammer on match day
travelled to Dundee to watch Rangers play in the Scottish Premiership at Dens Park on 9 January 2025
The 54-year-old went to McDonald's in the city centre
Kurt exchanged some 'light-hearted banter' with them but the 'Ultra' fans later followed him down the street
The dad-of-five was put into intensive care after the assault at Ninewells Hospital
Kurt suffered a violent hammer blow to the head as well as bruising believed to be caused by a blunt knife
Kurt said: "“There were about 20 of them
I got about 20 stitches in the back of my head from being hit with a hammer that had a nail lodged in it.“I also have a massive bruise from the blunt knife that they tried to stab me with
When I woke up in the hospital the next day I had a terrible concussion
"I was told that I had asked the nurse to get my dad to come for me
but he has been dead for five years."It was a scary situation
One minute I was looking forward to the game
The only thing they left me with was my bus pass."Kurt usually attends every Rangers game with his 21-year-old son
and he's relieved that his boy was not there
He has been following the team since the 1980s and he thinks football violence is getting worse
I wouldn’t be able to live with myself if he had been hurt too.“Things are getting out of hand and I'm telling my story to raise awareness
What has happened to me shouldn’t happen to anyone going to a football game.”
says "there are not enough cops on the street" despite "a rise in violence in football" across the last few years
He said: "It is really concerning that a person has set out that day with a hammer in their pocket knowing what they are going to do."The only way to stop that is to invoke the section 60 power to stop and search people to make sure they are not carrying weapons."The only way we can do that is by getting more officers on the street to make sure events are properly policed."We have seen a rise in violence in football these past few years
a return of the gang violence that we saw in the 80s
there are not enough cops on the street."When you don’t have a visible police presence
it has a knock-on effect."Offering safety advice to football fans on match days
David added: "I would advise people travelling to the match to only travel with other fans and if you are attending alone
don’t show your team colours until you are at the ground."That is how you stay safe because you are not dealing with normal fans
you are dealing with people out to cause violence."

today’s game v Stranraer has been postponed
these will still be valid for the rearranged fixture
We will be in touch with those booked in for hospitality with us today
The ‘Loons’ make the lengthy midweek trip to Stair Park
Stranraer on Tuesday evening to meet a home side who following a 2-0 win over Spartans on Saturday past have opened up an eight point gap on Jim Weir’s side
The Forfar Athletic players though will make the journey and head into the contest buoyed without doubt by their second half showing in particular at Peterhead on Saturday
Two goals in arrears at half time having battled the elements and a very poor refereeing decision to award the penalty which led to the home side’s second counter
they turned the game on its head in the second period to the delight of Jim Weir and no doubt the hardy band of Forfar fans who made the trip north
from Russell Mclean and debutant Declan Byrne
secured the point and in all fairness only one team looked like capturing all three points the longer the second period moved on
Jim Weir though acknowledges the importance of Tuesday night’s clash
coming just ten days after Chris Aitken’s outfit headed home from the Alpha Projects Stadium @ Station Park with all three points
courtesy of Grant Gallagher’s 51st minute headed effort
Jim is well aware how important it is to defeat the sides within striking distance in the league table and the re-arranged fixture tomorrow night is the first of at least three opportunities that the Athies have in this regard in the weeks ahead
The ‘Loons’ Saturday morning acquisition on loan from Hibernian Reuben McAllister was heavily involved in the build up to the equalising goal at Balmoor and he could well prove to be a real asset in the remainder of the campaign
He will be part of the squad who travel to the south west tip of the country tomorrow afternoon in preparation for the 7.45pm
but Adam Hutchinson is ruled out following his hamstring tweak on Saturday past
Josh Skelly is also an absentee but a late decision will be made on Mark Whatley’s fitness
Work also continues behind the scenes to augment the squad options for the remainder of the campaign
Although the registration window shuts on Monday evening
players not contracted to clubs at the midnight deadline can still be signed while temporary transfers from within Scotland are still permitted for clubs at League2 level until the end of February
Back to the Stair Park clash and the home side have to date brought in two additions to their squad since their visit to Angus a week past Saturday
one of the duo Sean Docherty signed from East Fife
one of their marksmen in the victory over Spartans
the other Elliot Dunlop who returned from Airdrie on loan playing by all accounts a prominent part over the ninety minutes
Jim Weir and his squad will be up for the challenge
of that there is no question and keen to pick up their second three point haul on the road this campaign
prior to our only home fixture of the month on Saturday first when Edinburgh City come calling
There are two other midweek tussles in League2 tomorrow evening
Bonnyrigg Rose make the trip to Elgin while Stirling Albion play host to Spartans
The man in the middle at Stranraer on Tuesday evening is experienced whistler Steven Kirkland
Admission prices at Stair Park are as follows;-Adults £15Over 65’s £105/16 year olds £5 C’mon the Loons
Former Blues manager Stevie Aitken joins as assistant
Stranraer have confirmed the appointment of Chris Aitken as their new manager
a fans' favourite as a player and assistant manager
replaces Scott Agnew as boss at Stair Park
He will have his brother and former Stranraer boss
The Blues sit in 10th place in William Hill League 2 with five points from their opening eight league matches
Aitken's first game in charge is away to Edinburgh City on Saturday (5th October)
The TimesThe odd passenger trekking from the isolated railway station
or a freight driver resting in their lorry cab are the only signs of life among the 17-acre concrete wasteland where a busy port once connected Scotland’s now “forgotten corner” to Northern Ireland
Dumfries and Galloway’s second-largest town
was abandoned when the Stena Line ferry moved six miles north to Cairnryan in 2011
“You just need to get a wee look round and you can see why people feel forgotten,” says Sally Whorlow
the landlady of The Grapes pub in the centre of the town
“It’s just the community now that keeps Stranraer going.”
As founder of the Stranraer Development Trust
Romano Petrucci is a key member of that resilient community
Stranraer make the long trip North to Peterhead on Saturday for what will be the third meeting between the two sides this League 2 campaign
Stranraer currently sit 8th in the league table and will be looking for a win after drawing their last three matches however the Blue Toon will be aiming to stop them heading down the road with points in the bag as they look to bounce back after last weekends defeat to Elgin at Borough Briggs
From Co-Manager Jordon Brown: “It’s great to have a home game to start the year and without doubt not only will we be looking to bounce back immediately from the disappointing outcome last week but also start the year as we mean to go on
The fans were excellent last week and it was brilliant to see so many attend an away game and we hope to repay them in this second half of the season so they can come along consistently
starting tomorrow. This month it is so important that we give ourselves the best chance of being right in the mix for promotion come the business end of the season
I am sure there will be a lot of transitions and movements within teams and squads throughout the month and the team that can stay the most consistent will give themselves the best chance of success for sure.Stranraer – we don’t need any warnings on how dangerous they are
dangerous team who have improved under new management
Cammy remains out as we won’t risk him until he is fully ready as he is going to be vital to our success and we need him 100% and not missing any more games once back
Cieran Dunne serves his suspension but Andy returns which gives the whole team a welcome boost
Rory hasn’t been able to train with a back injury he picked up at Elgin but Scott Ross has managed through 2 sessions so will be in the squad
And finally we welcome Olly into the squad with good excitement and hope he will reap the rewards of his extremely hard work with Donal and Rebecca putting him through an extra long pre-season
It’s important we don’t put pressure on him too much as it is a big change for him to come into the match environment but we will integrate him accordingly”
The ‘Loons’ head to Stranraer on Saturday first
their second visit to Wigtownshire this month
A 2-1 victory for the visitors was the outcome of the midweek clash between the sides a couple of weeks back
Craig Slater with a 20 yard free-kick and a Bradley Rodden injury time penalty sealing the three points on the night
Since then Stranraer have picked up four points which included a superb 3-0 win at league leaders East Fife on Saturday past
results which now see them relatively safe on the 37 point mark in the table
Forfar Athletic following Saturday’s home defeat by the Spartans have returned to bottom spot in the William Hill League2
one point behind Bonnyrigg Rose who drew 1-1 at home to Stirling Albion at the weekend
Jim Weir will be hoping that a few of the injured players within his squad will return to full training this midweek as anticipated and be fit for action on Saturday
Admission prices at Stair Park are as follows;-Adults £15Over 65’s £105/16 year olds £5 A full preview of the fixture will appear on FAFC social media channels on Friday as usual
An 87-year-old man from Stranraer says his life has “drawn in” as he faces a nearly two-year wait for life-changing surgery.
John Small, who played football for his home town in the fifties and founded a walking football group with his son Gary, has already waited more than a year for a knee replacement.
John said: “Walking football was a really good outlet because it gave you company and it gave you a focus to do twice a week. Since I’ve been unable to do that, life has drawn in a bit.”
With thousands of people across Scotland dying in the queue for surgery on the NHS, Gary Small worries his dad could become another statistic.
Gary said: “We’re waiting for a knee operation, we might need to wait for another knee operation, that’s clearly going to have a big impact on how he can look after himself and the reason he’s probably lived to 87 is because he’s so good at doing that.”
Public Health Scotland figures, compiled by the charity Scotland Versus Arthritis, show 421 people in Dumfries and Galloway have waited more than 12 months for orthopaedic surgery. That’s triple the number recorded two years ago.
The Scottish Government has promised that, starting in March 2026, no one will have to wait longer than a year for an operation.
Julie White, chief executive, NHS Dumfries and Galloway, says the pandemic and an older and aging population have ramped up the pressure on the orthopaedic department.
To address the situation, she said they’re expanding the number of operations they can do and have recruited a new orthopaedic surgeon.
Asked how confident she is that the health board will meet the March 2026 target, she said: “We do have some challenges within orthopaedics; however, the work that I have alluded to will put us in the strongest possible position to achieve that target.”

Balmoor played host to its first match of 2025
The blue toon hoped to build on their 1-0 victory in the capital on Saturday
and their opponents were looking to make a winning start to the new year
as this was their first match since the end of December.
Jordan brown made one change to the victorious lineup that started against Edinburgh City
with Ciaran Dunne returning from his suspension to replace Danny Strachan.
The visitors took just three minutes to get their first shot away
Foster using his body well to win the ball high up the pitch
but the Stranraer Striker saw his shot come back off the woodwork
It took a little longer for Peterhead to force the opposition goalie into action
a deflected Andy McCarthy effort from outside the box had Kane scrambling across his goal-line and tipping the ball round the post for a corner
Ciaran Dunne found himself in shooting positions a number of times on his return to action
Jack Brown firing a low cross from the right hand side
Perhaps the best chance of the first half for the hosts was an effort from David Wilson just after the half hour mark
a corner not cleared by Stranraer fell kindly for the defender
but Kane got down well and crucially held the shot
with Kieran Shanks waiting to pounce.
both teams struggled to create any clear cut opportunities in front of goal
but Ciaran Dunne’s determined running on the left flank was once against causing the visiting defenders headaches
getting himself into a good area on the edge of the box
but his effort straight down the middle and comfortable for Kane
The breakthrough then came in the 59th minute
an excellent inswinging corner delivery from Max Barry was met by the head of Jason Brown
and the Peterhead skipper who had found himself unmarked was able to steer his header with enough power and accuracy into the back of the Stranraer net
a debut for the new signing on loan from Dundalk Jamie Walker
Both teams made a number of changes to try and get a better grip on the game
most notably a home debut for Oliver Colloty
Ciaran Dunne once again was marauding forward on 73 minutes
finding himself in a similar position as his chance in the first half
but Kane got down sharply to his left and palmed the strike away
Peterhead started to drop deeper to protect their lead
but inviting pressure from their opponents
The best chance for an equaliser came from Stranraer’s top scorer Mark Russell
who made a good run into the box and was found by his winger’s cut back
but could only poke his effort around the post and away for a goal kick
Stranraer could not find a way past Oluyemi
and Peterhead claimed all three points.

From Co-Manager Ryan Strachan: “After last week’s efforts it’s been a really positive week for us and we feel like we have momentum on our side at the moment. We were very strong last weekend against a really good Elgin team and deserved our win. It’s important while the chips are high that we ride that wave as long as possible. The players deserve great credit as they’ve really stepped up recently and delivered some strong performances.
Team news, Oliver Colloty will miss as he continues to shirk off the flu. Pete Pawlett will also miss out as he aggravated his ankle playing through the pain barrier last weekend. Ben armour misses out but has upped his intensity in training this week after his operation and is looking well, we expect him to return to full training in the next couple of weeks. Jamie Walker has recovered from a hamstring injury but we must be careful with him on a heavy pitch and travel”.
