proud bunch - and with very good reason Here are 15 reasons why being from Swadlincote is a badge of honour for those who live there From boxing legend Jack Bodell and The Voice star Kirby Frost to the Cornishware pottery made at TG Green there are so many reasons why people should celebrate being from Swadlincote and be proud to call it home We've been talking to Swad folk to find out why they are so proud to hail from this corner of South Derbyshire Swadlincote has certainly played its part in making its mark on the world - locally We all know about TG Green's famous blue and white Cornishware pottery - no self-respecting kitchen would be complete without a smattering of the stuff The kiln still at Sharpe's Pottery is still standing although it is now just used as a visitor centre The Swadlincote area was the perfect home for the pottery industry due to the two natural resources; clay and coal and everyday household kitchenware was a common product to come out of many of the town's potteries Ashby Pottery and Mason and Cash which produced everything to tableware to toilet bowls at one time Vic Halom and Jeff Bourne were all in the same class at Linton Primary School and all went on to have successful careers Halom recalled all three would go to Rodney's house to watch the FA Cup finals as they all dreamt of Possibly the most famous footballer to come out of the Swadlincote area was David Nish The Leicester and Derby star grew up in Measham and attended Ashby Grammar School He went on to play for Leicester City and Derby County and was part of the Division One championship winning side with the Rams The National Forest was first developed in the 1990s and Swadlincote sits at the very heart of it Many of those who were but youngsters in the 90s remember planting their own trees at Swadlincote Woodlands which has now become a picturesque area to be proud of The Conkers centre sits at the heart of the National Forest and visitors come from far and wide to see some of the attractions on offer and enjoy the forest  - and we have all that right on our doorstep If it's a bite to eat you're after there are plenty of great places you can visit for some grub - and there are delicacies from all over the world on offer in Swad From classic English dining at the recently converted Angel Bar and Restaurant to vintage American dishes at the 50s American Diner And from a slice of pizza or bowl of pasta at Italian restaurant chain Prezzo or family-run Montanaro's to a traditional portion of fish and chips from award-winning chippy Only in Swad could you say "Ayup duck aye cannae come tonight cuz it's gerrin black over Bill's motha's" and everyone around you would understand exactly what you meant The town takes a lot of its dialect from Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire and some of our words - nesh (cold) jitty (alleyway) and mardy (grumpy and moody) - are completely unknown to those outside of the Midlands Possibly the most famous of all locomotive designers Sir Nigel Gresley is one of the biggest names to ever come out of the area - having grown up in Netherseal The engineer had a hugely successful career and designed some of the most famous trains to ever travel across the country including the Flying Scotsman - the first train to reach 100mph and the Mallard which still holds the record for being the world's fastest steam locomotive The vast amounts of coal and clay sitting underneath Swadlincote meant the area became known for its collieries The first recorded evidence of mining in the area dates all the way back to the 13th century meaning the history is well and truly entwined in Swadlincote's heritage Some of the colliery wheels still take centre stage across the area including the Pingle Academy and Pennine Way Junior Academy Sharpe's Pottery is believed to be the only surviving sanitaryware works site in the country although it does not operate now but has been transformed into a musuem Sharpe's patented the 'box rim' a new way of flushing the toilet that has several holes around the rim releasing water when flushed It's not just footballers who have made a name for themselves in the sporting world and trained at the Royal Oak pub before tunring professional and taking the title of British Heavyweight Champion in 1969 Woodville's Zach Parker looks set to be following in his footsteps has been making waves in the S9 class of swimming and has taken a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games and bronze at the Rio Paralympic Games in 2016 The Elephant Man or Harry Potter is shown on our screens every Swaddie will tell you that legendary actor John Hurt grew up in Woodville and his father was the vicar of St Stephen's Church there is also director Swadlincote-born Deborah Haywood who released her hit feature film Pin Cushion starring Joanna Scanlan and Isy Suttie nine out of 10 times you tell somebody you're from Swadlincote is that the place with the ski slope; I went there as a kid' It was built on a spoil tip left over from mining in the area and was opened by five-time Olympian and Ski Sunday presenter Graham Bell in 1987 The 160-metre slope was built in the late 80s by local businessman Tony Freeman and the toboggan run was introduced when the site was sold to John Nike in the 1990s It was even used by Olympian Eddie the Eagle in the 80s There is certainly no shortage of events and festivals in Swadlincote Bark in the Park and the Swadlincote Transport Festival are all popular events in the calendar that all take place smack bang in the middle of town Some of the stores that line the High Street are hundreds of years old and are beautiful buildings with their classic designs the new building was the first time most people had seen the flamboyant Art Deco architecture while the old Midlands Co-op building sits on the remains of a circular bottle kiln The town hall is another impressive building It was built in 1861 from money raised by the public Below the clock is the motto 'Time the Avenger' which is thought to have been used by Henry Des Voeux and was involved in a bitter lawsuit and insisted time would avenge him Paramount cars became well known all over the world Two models of the cars were produced; the Paramount Ten and the Paramount 1 and 1/2-Litre Part of the old workshop can still be seen behind Ladbroke's and its showroom was in the area now taken up by Clarks Triumph Motorcycles is owned by Swadlincote man He bought the collapsed Triumph brand in 1983 before investing more than £80 million into rebuilding it The company now produces 46,000 motorcycles people most proud of being from Swadlincote because of the wonderful community spirit in the town Where else could you go and have complete strangers say hello and ask how you are when you walk down through the market on a Tuesday morning Burton Live also often covers stories about local heroes including residents raising thousands of pounds to build an accessible doesn’t. We initiated over 20 trials, ranging from apps that weigh and report on food waste to pioneering school programmes designed to engage young people on the issue. Our aim was to identify which tactics had the biggest impact on reducing food waste, and learn how they could be rolled out in more households. Our work in Swadlincote was carried out in partnership with WRAP who evaluated the trial.
