The Environment Agency has submitted a planning application for a new Flood Alleviation Scheme for Tadcaster to better protect homes and businesses from flooding from the River Wharfe
The planning application is now open for public views and the Environment Agency and North Yorkshire Council are inviting people to have their say on the proposed plans
The scheme looks to replace and improve flood defences on both the left and right bank of the River Wharfe through the town
to reduce flood risk for residents and businesses and add greater resilience against climate change into the future
The plans take account of the historic significance of Tadcaster’s architecture and heritage
aiming to make upgrades in keeping with the town’s look and feel
There are plans for extensive sympathetic landscaping
so buildings not only benefit from a greater level of flood protection
but retain their special character and enhance the area
combined with investment in landscaping the green corridor running through the town alongside the river
that gives greater peace of mind for potential investors and business owners
We understand the devastating impact flooding has had on people in Tadcaster
which is why reducing flood risk is our top priority
We have been working as fast as we can to develop a scheme which offers the best possible level of flood protection and is able to withstand the extreme weather
we are likely to experience more frequently due to climate change
We know the community in Tadcaster has waited a long time for improved flood defences in the town and we’re pleased we have reached this key milestone for the project
People can comment on the planning application via North Yorkshire Council’s planning portal online here.
The reference number for the application is ZG2024/1144/EIA
The consultation will be open for 16 weeks and there will be drop-in sessions for residents at the Ark in Tadcaster hosted by the Environment Agency team
It is hoped that pictorial displays and artwork
The Environment Agency aims to start construction during Spring 2025
The work is expected to take around 2 years to complete

she’s never done anything like this before
She set herself the challenge to raise funds for St Gemma’s Hospice who looked after her mother in her last days
“My mum passed away on 2 March after a 6 year battle with Myeloma (blood cancer)” explains Vicki
“Her wishes were to be supported in her final days by St Gemma’s
It all happened so quickly and she only spent the last 36 hours of her life there but they were just incredible with her and with our family and they continue to support us now via their Bereavement Counselling
“They enabled us to be present with mum and to not worry that she was in pain
Even though mum at this point didn’t understand what was happening they always explained everything to her and were just so kind
Thank you will never be enough for what they do they really are angels.”
Vicki ran the London Marathon last year to raise funds for Myeloma UK
for this challenge she has had to learn to swim “properly” and has joined Seacroft Wheelers Zero to Hero group to improve her cycling confidence
“The training has been difficult having to do three separate disciplines none of which I can say I am really strong at but I have definitely enjoyed the variety and it is definitely something I would like to continue doing after this and to get better at
“I wanted to do something as a challenge as I am 40 this year (not knowing what was about to happen)
I just want to make my mum proud.” Vicki added
