but the undercard isn’t too shabby either at Goodwood & Thirsk
More Thunder tries to back up his most recent win under Tom Marquand
One who won’t be inconvenienced by it is WOODHAY WONDER
She won four on the bounce at HQ last year
and three of those came on rattling fast ground
With a run behind More Thunder under her belt
she’ll be a lot closer in these conditions now
CRIMSON ADVOCATE failed by a whisker to beat Soprano at Kempton on her first run back in a long time at the end of March
There was a lot to like about that performance
and high-profile owners Wathnan Racing look to have another good filly on their hands
but connections should have HAND OF GOD ready for this 1m 1f handicap
He’s gone up a bit in the ratings having beaten a subsequent Grade 2 winner Blue Lemons
is rated 22lbs higher since Hand Of God beat him
OBELIX has some very good form and showed what he was capable of when winning at Haydock off 82 last season ,and is only 4lb higher now
He finished fourth on seasonal debut at this track two weeks ago when not getting the clearest of runs
He has to be of interest and runs from stall 11
No Half Measures gets better as the season progresses
and that makes me lean towards WASHINGTON HEIGHTS
The first Classic of the season is the 2,000 Guineas
the only Classic John Gosden has yet to win
I was really taken by the performance of FIELD OF GOLD in the Craven Stakes last month and there a lot of positives to take from it
He travelled well and quickened away from his rivals at the end in impressive fashion
He looks like he can get himself out of trouble if it arises in the race
and it would be nice for John & Thady Gosden and Kieran Shoemark to win it

Hi Royal (2.35 Thirsk)
Runner-up in the 2,000 Guineas in 2023 and then third in the Irish equivalent
but he ran his best race first time out last season when third in the Earl of Sefton and returns down in grade off a favourable mark.Paul Curtis

who went on to land the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf

Can clock some high-class speed figures on his day
as he proved when second in last year's Ayr Gold Cup
Has plummeted down the handicap following several uninspiring Meydan and all-weather runs.Craig Thake
Crimson Advocate (2.00 Goodwood)
Just touched off at Kempton last time and is expected go one better after some smart work on the Al Bahathri for John and Thady Gosden.David Milnes

MAGIC BOX was very green first time up at Yarmouth 11 days ago
finishing on the heels of the group after blowing the start
leaving the impression she has a fair bit of ability
and she looks the way to go in this thin maiden with improvement surely on the way
while Moghitha and Believeinmenow are interesting newcomers
HABERDASH was strong in the betting for his debut and
he left that form behind when showing up well for a long way at Beverley last week
This doesn’t look the strongest race of its type
and he can put his experience to good use to get off the mark at the third time of asking
Under The Radar wasn’t able to show her true ability on debut and could easily improve
as could Dacres Cross for whom the penny was dropping late in the same race
There are plenty who like to go forward in this field and that could play into the hands of the patiently ridden RHYTHM MASTER
who shaped with plenty of encouragement when runner-up at this course last month and remains fairly treated given he has form at listed level and also finished runner-up in a handicap from a mark of 103 a couple of years ago
WOROODD was on her toes beforehand but still shaped up well despite her inexperience when third on her debut in a seven-furlong maiden at Newbury three weeks ago
Rating a likely improver with that run under her belt
she’s selected to come out on top for the Ed Walker team
who were amongst the winners at Newmarket on Friday
Abloom is a newcomer to note from the William Haggas stable and respected along with Nakaaha
Reenie’s Dream is another open to improvement
TOBY TOPS has really got his act together in no uncertain terms of late
winning his last two starts over two miles
and a subsequent 6lb rise in the weights for a five and a half length success at Nottingham last time looks particularly lenient
especially as he overcame a pace bias that day
likely at the main expense of fellow last-time-out winners Savrola and Letmeseethecolts
MAKANAH was unlucky not to score at Newcastle when last seen in November
meeting plenty of trouble before rattling home and
provided that he is raring to go following a break
this 10-y-o could take some stopping back up to six furlongs off the same mark
Kings Merchant should come on for his reappearance spin
and he is feared most ahead of Imperial Guard
Paul Midgley’s six-year-old has highlighted he’s ready to strike in recent weeks
running another solid race when runner-up at Pontefract on Wednesday
who is an intriguing contender back on turf
and Mon Na Slieve are a trio of others fancied to be thereabouts
who remains on a good mark following a string of solid efforts in defeat in recent months
Another Baar shaped better than the result at Catterick
who were first and second respectively over course and distance recently

Sam James gave owners Fine Clarets Racing a "dream day" with a perfectly judged ride to capture the Ladbrokes Thirsk Hunt Cup on Flight Plan
It was a classy running of the track's richest race as the Group 2 winner held off the 2023 2,000 Guineas runner-up Hi Royal in a handicap which dates back to 1859
"It's a dream day," said Jason Fildes
I love Thirsk and the Thirsk Hunt Cup is a race we've all grown up with."
Flight Plan was having only his second run for Fine Clarets
having carried the Clipper Logistics colours when landing the Dullingham Park Stakes at Leopardstown in 2023
"We went up to Karl Burke's for a stable visit in February
and he told me that Clipper were selling one or two," Fildes said
"I asked if there was anything we should look at and he said this fellow
Karl told me that he'd been operated on for a testicle problem and they thought he was back to his three-year-old best
"He was the most expensive horse I've bought into but Karl said he'd keep a leg because he thought he could get him back to where he was and that's what sold him to us."
Burke's assistant James Cowley came up with the idea of going for this £50,000 handicap and Fildes said: "We knew we had a chance off 103
Plenty of credit must also go to the jockey
who got Flight Plan to the front from stall nine
dictated the pace and kept enough in reserve to hold on by half a length
"I was a little worried and there seemed to be other horses that wanted to do the same thing as me," James said
"I jumped very well and was able to dictate
Dropping down into a handicap he was able to dictate a little bit easier than it would be in a Group 2
It's great when a plan comes together
Hopefully it's got his confidence up and he can go on from this."
It is not just the sun that has been shining this week
Tim Easterby's strong team of two-year-olds is in sparkling form and a clean sweep of both legs of the restricted maiden made it three winners in four days
Anaisa and Under The Radar
The wins came after Argentine Tango's success at Pontefract on Wednesday
"It's been a good few days," Easterby said
"We've got plenty of two-year-olds and they're okay."

Ground conditions can play a huge factor in where it's best to be drawn
Thirsk is one of those tracks that definitely has a correlation
but the early market doesn't seem to have factored that in
Whip Cracker and Our Havana
when 'good' has appeared in the going description
horses berthed in those stalls are just 2-33 in handicaps run over the Thirsk Hunt Cup distance with more than 13 runners since 2016
That strike-rate improves only marginally to 4-33 when considering those drawn in stalls one to four
Stalls seven through to 12 have had the most success
with seven winners coming from one of the three highest stalls
One of those was Redarna
who defied stall 15 of 15 in this race three years ago
He's an 11-year-old now but he's 5lb lower than when fourth last year and looks ideally berthed in stall ten
Obelix finished a length and a quarter behind Rhythm Master when an unlucky fourth (met trouble) on his reappearance over seven furlongs here last month
He's 3lb better off and the return to a mile looks ideal
Flight Plan's last win came in a Group 2 at Leopardstown in September 2023
but he's dropped a long way in the weights and could prove well treated on his handicap debut with that return under his belt.Analysis by Harry Wilson
trainer of Northern ExpressHe's in good form but the handicapper didn't miss him after his big win last year and he's at the top end of his mark
We didn't want to be drawn so wide and he loves those seven-furlong handicaps at Ascot and York
trainer of Flight PlanHe ran well here on his comeback
and going back up to a mile will suit better
If he gets to the front he'll run a big race
Adam Ryan, assistant to Kevin Ryan, trainer of Hi RoyalOn his old form he's very classy
but we're trying to give him a confidence booster and it's his first start in a handicap
It's very competitive but if he finds his old form he could go close
trainer of Whip CrackerWe landed a great draw in stall one and it'll be a big help
He's been very well since the Lincoln
in which he was wiped out – he might have been placed that day
Tim Easterby, trainer of Cruyff TurnHe's in good form but I thought the handicapper put him up a lot for his win at Redcar
If he's in the same form he should run well
trainer of ObelixWe were slightly surprised he managed to run so well on his comeback here
It was an easy seven furlongs and we just wanted to get a run into him while the ground was decent
We certainly give him a chance.Reporting by Matt Rennie

Both horses were making their handicap debuts off a mark of 102
with Flight Plan lining up after a fourth in the British EBF Michael Foster Conditions Stakes at the course three weeks ago
Flight Plan was given a positive front-running ride by Sam James and the duo had the 13 runners well strung out at the top of the home straight
Flight Plan continued to find as the chasing pack closed approaching the final furlong
with Hi Royal and La Trinidad emerging as the main dangers
Both horses challenged on either side of Flight Plan as the winning post loomed but could not get on terms with Karl Burke’s runner
with the distances half a length and a head
Flight Plan is the highest-rated winner of the Ladbrokes Thirsk Hunt Cup this century
who overcame a mark of 100 before going on to win two Gr1 prizes in 2013
James said: “Flight Plan did it all for me
He has been highly campaigned and we have always thought a lot of him
I think he was able to dictate easier than he potentially would in a Group Two or Group Three
That will hopefully have given him some confidence
“It is a great training performance from Karl
To run him in a conditions race the last day
It is great for the horse’s new owners as well
“Thirsk should be very proud of the horses running here today
There were some top horses running in the race.”
Asked if the Royal Hunt Cup could be a target
James said: “A race like that could be up his street
but it is just good for him to get his head in front today and hopefully his confidence will grow from here.”

News and entertainment worth sharing – York and North Yorkshire
multi-storey building is set to be constructed at Thirsk Racecourse
replacing the existing stand with a more up-to-date alternative
is set to be demolished under new plans submitted to North Yorkshire Council.
The new building would feature three storeys
including a public bar on the ground floor
and a garden roof terrace on the second floor.
stated that the new stand would be a key step towards creating a modern course
“We’ve patched and patched the stand over the last few years
but it’s come to the end of its useful life
“If you’re not going forward in racing you’re going backwards and we don’t want to do that
“Racing is a very good sport and we’ve got to modernise to attract the next generation of racegoers and keep the current generation happy.”
The project estimated to take around 18 months to complete.
it’s likely to start in September 2026.
The racecourse will continue to operate as normal while the project is underway.
Supporting documents submitted by KCA Architects agree that the racecourse needs to “evolve and develop”
with the new stand aimed at offering racegoers an “upgraded experience”
The documents state: “As part of the ongoing evolution of the course
there is the opportunity to create an upmarket stand
which is situated on a prime development site within the heart of the course enclosure
“The north side provides spectacular panoramic viewing across the racetrack and winning line with the south delivering views across the parade ring and enclosure
“The site sits in the heart of the circulation routes making access easy for the racegoer
non-racing activities plus vehicles for deliveries
The position is ideal for a new landmark building.”
The documents note that the existing 1960s stand is now outdated
despite having served the racecourse well over the years.
with a recommendation from structural engineers for demolition.
Further details about the redevelopment will be made available in due course. For any enquiries, you can contact Erin Boswell

ITV Racing Tips for this Saturday 3rd May 2025 - Newmarket, Thirsk & GoodwoodLatest News
Fri 02 May 2025 16.00ITV Racing Tips for this Saturday 3rd May 2025- Newmarket
Goodwood & ThirskLooking for expert ITV Racing tips for Saturday
Our tipsters have handpicked today’s best horse racing tips from Newmarket
ITV’s coverage from Newmarket on Saturday gets underway with a tricky-looking handicap
and Silvestre De Sousa is an eye-catching booking for the Richard Spencer team
The four-year-old ended last season with a respectable sixth in the Silver Cup Handicap
and looks well-handicapped for a big run on a return to a better surface
and Bright Thunder could give him a big Saturday winner at Goodwood
The four-year-old filly has won twice from six starts on the turf
and was last seen finishing a close fifth behind One Look in the Park Express Stakes
meaning that his runners deserve huge respect at present
Approval will be reunited with Tom Marquand on Saturday
with the combination previously teaming up for a narrow success over a mile and two at Goodwood in August
but an each-way chance could be taken on the Kevin Ryan-trained Hi Royal
The five-year-old has been off the track since September
but first-time out is typically the time to catch him
he finished a length behind the impressive Ottoman Fleet over a mile and one in the Earl of Sefton Stakes
The five-year-old for Kevin Ryan will have Tom Eaves aboard
just as he did when narrowly touched off by Rogue Lightning in Group Three company last time out
and the progressive Scorthy Champ could peak at the right time for the Joseph O’Brien team
and the selection finally looked to piece everything together on his final start last season when beating subsequent Breeders’ Cup winner Henri Matisse in the Vincent O’Brien National Stakes

The Barclays branch in Thirsk closed in October 2023
the former Barclays building will become a discount store with a 6,000 sq ft rear extension and two flats created on the first floor
The Yorkshire Trading Company applied for permission for the conversion
the front of the building will remain largely unchanged
to remain in keeping with the town’s heritage and character
with one being 670 sq ft and the second being 760 sq ft
Work will also include internal demolition to provide an open-plan floorplan
but is within the town’s conservation area
Historic England had noted it was concerned the scheme would harm the local conservation area
Another concern raised was that the conversion would have an ‘overbearing impact’ on a nearby home
