A popular Thornbury business is planning a relocation and expansion and has asked The Blue Mountains council for help and support
Lesley Fisher, the owner of Loved You Madly - a downtown Thornbury consignment shop, made a presentation at council’s committee of the whole meeting on April 29
Fisher asked council for its support as she embarks on an ambitious expansion and relocation plan for her business
Fisher explained that she plans to relocate from her current shop in the Harbour Mews building to the building located at 24 Bruce Street South – right next to the Good Grief coffee shop
Fisher said she plans an expansion/renovation of the new location that will allow her business to expand and grow
Her shop has grown in popularity and needs more room
“We’re very proud of our success,” Fisher told council
“The community in general has been wonderfully supportive.”
Fisher said she would like to put an addition on the building at the rear of the property
which is similar to other neighbouring buildings on the same street
She said she has run into two issues as she plans the expansion: the town’s parking requirements and the length of time to get a site plan approved
the town’s parking regulations would require Fisher to provide an additional seven parking spaces
because of the location of the property in the heart of downtown
there is no room/space to create those seven spots
the town’s parking policies do not include an option for a property owner to pay cash in lieu of parking when it’s not physically possible to create the required parking spaces
Fisher requested that the town come to a cash-in-lieu agreement with her to allow the project to move ahead
he said many communities have begun to eliminate parking requirements or have specific cash-in-lieu bylaws in place to regulate these kinds of situations
“Seven parking spaces could never be supported by this site,” said Toncic
Fisher and Toncic also said they are hoping the project can get an expedited site plan process to allow it to advance quickly
Toncic said they have already met with staff who have been “considerate and receptive to our concerns.”
“There are concerns that costs and delays are not going to make this economically feasible,” said Toncic
council received the information from the delegation and Acting CAO Adam Smith said staff would bring a report back to council in response to the specific requests from Fisher

After Gavin Thornbury’s seven years with Connacht Rugby ended last summer
he contemplated the end of his professional rugby career
the lock forward is captain of a resurgent Utah Warriors in Major League Rugby
The 31-year-old was one of several senior players who came to Herriman in the offseason to help the year eight club back to Play-Off rugby
Thornbury spent his time in his native Ireland with Connacht in Galway after joining the Leinster Rugby Academy
Aside from brief spells in New Zealand and England
he relishes a whole new life across the North Atlantic
The former Ireland U20 international spent his vacations visiting major cities in the USA to see friends who had emigrated and a country he was obsessed with
“It was the chance to play in America,” Thornbury said
I always had an eye on it to see how it was going
“Playing over here and getting to live over here has always been attractive
I didn’t know what I was going to do
and then my agent asked if I would go to America
“Then Utah got on and said they were looking for a lock
Director of Rugby) and they were really honest about how last season had gone and their vision for this year
Thornbury arrived in Utah after two months with the Northampton Saints
He played six games for the Gallagher Premiership Rugby champions and prepared for his maiden MLR campaign alongside a hotbed of rugby talent
Utah head coach Greg Cooper liked what he saw in the Irishman and appointed the forward as his captain ahead of their season-opening 45-31 win over the Chicago Hounds
“I was very grateful to be asked,” Thornbury said
there are so many leaders in that team; it’s more of a placename than anything else
“We have got vast experience in Liam Coltman
and experience all over the board with Joel Hodson and D’Angelo Leuila
“It’s not like I’ve had to really step up in the leadership department
there’s lot of leaders here and I was just really grateful to be asked
I did it in Connacht once or twice but never had the full captaincy role
but it has been a lot of fun and I am delighted to be doing it.”
Utah beat the NOLA Gold and Miami Sharks but lost 37-17 against the Houston SaberCats at Zions Bank Stadium

Zion Going and Jordan Trainor both scored two tries in their 36-19 win over the Sharks at Baptist Health Community Field as Thornbury and his teammates bounced back from their Week 4 loss
It is a start to the season that dramatically contrasts with the end of their 2024 season
the Warriors were eight points from playing knockout rugby as the finest of margins took the hunger for winner-takes-all rugby to new heights
Thornbury is one of a number of crucial arrivals to Cooper’s squad
along with ex-All Blacks hooker Liam Coltman
former NOLA center Jordan Trainor and journeyman prop Aku Seiuli
Buying into the Utah Built mentality established by the coaching panel
which was reinforced by hiking up mountains and preseason at Warriors HQ
“There obviously has been a bit of a rebuild,” Thornbury said
“There are a lot of players that are new this year
“I came in a little bit later than everyone else
but the connections were here when I arrived
“You could see everyone was enjoying being in and around the building
Everyone bought into what the coaches were saying
“We have tried to continue that as we went into the season
but it is a lot easier in preseason because there is no selection and no results
“Now there are games the mood of the camp changes
We just try to go back to that Utah Built philosophy and try to keep our connections
The group are doing it really well.”
Entering Week 6 and a clash with the Seattle Seawolves
the Warriors are second in the Western Conference
who have inflicted Utah’s sole defeat so far in 2025
a trip to Starfire Sports Complex and the division’s fourth-place team invites plenty of potential for the visiting team to further their cause
the Warriors’ start to 2025 indicates a team with a clear desire to end that knockout rugby drought
Thornbury will be the face of that campaign
both as the team’s captain and the key in the forward pack
“Every team I have been in wants to win the competition that we are in,” Thornbury said
there are obviously different markers along the way that we have to hit
“You can’t look too far down the line
We’re very much focused week-on-week
“I think as a playing group we’ve committed to each week presenting a new challenge
“I have found myself preparing for teams that I have never prepared against
“Each week you need to be on your game
so we talk each week about a new challenge and what we’re trying to focus on.”

It’s customary for journalists to declare interests
So here goes: Thornbury Castle and I have history
The old house I grew up in was linked to the Tudor castle by a secret underground passage
Despite years of scraping and prodding we never found it
My wife and I were married in St Mary’s church (which definitely was once linked to the castle
enjoying our wedding reception and first married night in the castle
in a grand room overlooking the extensive grounds
My brother was a waiter in their acclaimed restaurant but was quickly fired for calamities including squirting coffee over guests after incorrectly assembling the cafetiere
He was 17 and now - in his 60s - is over it
As a local ‘cub’ newspaper reporter in the ‘80s I visited the castle for stories and gossip and have had a strong affection for the place ever since
following the castle’s 2019 acquisition by a Dubai hotel group and an ambitious multi-million-pound refurbishment
the cost of which surely exceeded the castle’s purchase price
a bit of context; it’s not just any old castle
on pretty countryside stretching to the Severn Valley
began in 1511 to provide a status residence for Edward Stafford
Building went well until he was beheaded for treason on the orders of Henry VIII..
The castle never was fully completed and fell into disrepair following the Civil War but was partially restored by the Howard family in 1824
no wonder this beautiful building is Grade 1 listed; a lot was at stake during the renovation
What was once a fine hotel – but succumbed to the aging process – has now
even if some areas await attention with further plans in the pipeline
Under the careful guardianship of Khamas Hospitality
the castle has come spectacularly back to life
As you nose in through the gateway by the gatehouse (awaiting restoration) along the formal drive
testament to the expertise of the gardening team
The lawns - sweeping up to the atmospheric ruins of the outer walls - are lovingly tended
On through the historic archway and the inner courtyard reverberates with new life thanks to the splashy fountain and striking formal flower beds accentuating the castle’s grandeur
Inside the thick castle walls all the old timberwork - doors
bannisters and more - has been sensitively restored
The old floor tiles have been brought back to life
the high ceilings in the public rooms lovingly refurbished and hand-painted
The main hall is dominated by the original stately fireplace boasting intricately carved reliefs including the Stafford knot
repeated throughout the castle on doorhandles and crests
have likewise benefited from the phoenix-like rebirth

Is it a little showy? Sure, right down to the new ‘Tudor’ chairs, ‘historic’ painted scenes on the occasional tables and the strident patterns on carpet and curtain. But it works; it can’t have been much less glam than when ‘cloth of gold’ Henry VIII visited. So why not indulge its ostentatious Tudor heritage - few other hotels have the right
There are 26 luxurious ‘bedchambers’ hidden in turrets
including the Henry VIII suite where the man himself stayed with Anne Boleyn
sumptuous James V of Scotland room with a big
a dramatic central chandelier and sleeping mat for Fergal
The cavernous bathroom featured an elegant roll top bath but was dominated by a huge walk-in shower with - not wall tiles - but a big
Some rooms have underfloor heating while there are minibars
complimentary bottles of delicious artisan sloe gin
How could you classify a hotel so constrained by its Grade 1 Listed status that it can’t add fripperies such as a pool
Thornbury Castle was once celebrated for its fine dining and the eating experience again matches that of the building’s splendour
overseen by chef David Williams (not me) was recently awarded three coveted AA rosettes and four red stars for its service (no squirty cafetieres today)
and serves starters including mushroom veloute with pickled shimeji and enoki with truffle cream
and treacle cured salmon with Japanese salad and wasabi
eight-hours slow-roasted belly pork with brawn and black pudding and caramelised apple
The dramatic dining rooms are a highlight; intimate but spectacular with panelling
portraits of long dead nobles and royals connected with the castle
we had to dine in splendid isolation in the Library
while surrounded by a random collection of old books and a suit of armour
Only the overly bright lighting could have been more intimate
You’d pay good money to see the 15-acre grounds (including a great field for dog-walking) if they were a public attraction
they include a wire sculpture of Henry VIII and are divided into separate areas including a rose garden
It’s strange to think that the real Henry once promenaded here too
which lets the side down and which awaits to be embraced by the refurb programme
Although there’s no full-blown spa there are treatment rooms
Guests seeking to squeeze more history out of their visit can hire Tudor garb (we spotted two TikTokers
history tours or a horse-drawn carriage ride by special arrangement
We enjoyed a sunny seven-mile cross-country ramble to one of my favourite old pubs at Oldbury-on-Severn
Thornbury Castle feels like a timeless concept - almost a state of mind - as much as a hotel
romantic ruins and peaceful location make it - in its new lease of life - as fit for a king as ever it was
