Edinburgh-headquartered Fidra Energy has received planning consent for its first battery storage site at Thorpe Marsh Doncaster Council approved the 1,400MW/3,100MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) project which will be the largest in the UK and one of the largest in Europe The facility is being developed on 55 acres of land that was part of a former coal station site and is adjacent to an existing substation Sungrow will supply containers of lithium-ion based battery systems as part of a strategic agreement the two companies signed in November. Sungrow will also provide its liquid-cooled Power-Titan 2.0 BESS units for Fidra Energy’s 500MW/1GWh West Burton C project set to begin construction in 2026 Fidra Energy was launched by energy investment firm EIG in September 2024 aiming at a 10GW operational portfolio across the UK and Europe by 2030 Its UK development pipeline sits at 3.15GW and as well as Thorpe Marsh (formerly owned by Banks Renewables) and West Burton C includes 1.2GW Bicker Fen 1&2 project in the East Midlands and Nottinghamshire’s 500MW West Burton C development.  Fidra’s chief executive officer Chris Elder called Thorpe Marsh “one of the most exciting infrastructure projects in the world” adding that “as the largest battery energy storage site in the UK the project will help turbocharge the UK’s ambitions of achieving a clean power system providing critical flexibility to store energy when there is excess renewable generation and release this when needed” managing director and co-head of energy transition at EIG added: “This represents a significant step in EIG’s commitment to advancing large-scale energy assets in the UK and driving the country’s shift to a more sustainable EIG created a new electricity supplier through the acquisition WBE and EIG sold the power plant and BESS to TotalEnergies independent power producer (IPP) WBE said it would focus on growing its energy storage platform in the UK and Europe It was WBE that initially took over the Thorpe Marsh BESS from Banks Renewables; with the sale of WBE’s operational assets to TotalEnergies Fidra essentially took over its operations Former NXT star Eddy Thorpe has broken his silence following his release from WWE on Friday On Friday several stars were released by WWE across both the main roster and NXT with further departures being confirmed on Saturday Among the names released on Friday was NXT’s Eddy Thorpe – who aside from a gif posted to Twitter in the wake of the news had not commented publicly on his WWE exit That changed today as Thorpe has taken to to Twitter to thank WWE for his tenure in the company Also worth noting is that Thorpe changed his Twitter handle back to his real name – Karl Fredericks – which he used throughout his wrestling career before joining WWE in 2023 so it seems likely that he will be using this name once again once he’s free to return to action Also released from WWE on Friday was Thorpe’s real-life girlfriend Dakota Kai – to find out what she had to say in regards to her release on social media follow this link here. To be fair, he was early to spot the wider growing public interest in family history as a hobby even before the genetic element had truly taken hold with the arrival of rival commercial DNA-tracing services But the big embarrassment for me is that I have finally been sucked in I recently discovered something surprising enough – funny enough even – about one of my own antecedents that the last laugh is on me I was shown documentary proof that my paternal grandfather – who I always knew had grown up above Thorpe’s a tobacconists and newsagents on Roman Road in east London – was immediately descended from a Fleet Street barber This unexpected bulletin from the past did cause perhaps one of my eyebrows to rise a little the fabled “demon barber” said to have operated so fatally from that London street But it was the next revelation about my specific line of Thorpes that can genuinely make people sit up straight for a bit an eminent Elizabethan designer and surveyor called John Thorpe is the man credited with inventing the corridor Thorpe’s design for a house of two pavilions rooms in the great houses of England used to lead on all grouped around a central entrance hall and while some buildings had monastery-style external covered cloisters bordering central courtyards these were always too nippy for a northern climate to popularise the idea of an internal corridor – and then was one of a succession of stonemasons and builders who worked in the Northamptonshire area from the late 1500s and he is now the subject of renewed academic interest He was the descendant of three generations of builders and his grandfather and father were both stonemasons gaining work as a surveyor’s clerk to Queen Elizabeth I and eventually becoming the top guy at court in his field The real testament to his talent is the album of original drawings he put together, now a prized possession of Sir John Soane’s Museum in London. The Book of Architecture of John Thorpe contains 295 drawings made mainly between the 1590s and the 1620s and covering 168 Thorpe’s architectural significance was clearly apparent in his painstaking surveys and sketches of the major private homes of the era including some that are mere blueprints of houses he hoped to be commissioned to build So important is Thorpe’s architectural reputation that his statue is up among the firmament of design stars that decorates the outside of the Victoria and Albert Museum in Kensington clutching his roll of drawings and dressed in doublet the chief current scholar of Thorpe’s work he is a man who ought to be held in as much esteem nowadays as Sir Christopher Wren The dedication plaque on almshouses bequeathed to King’s Cliffe on Thorpe’s death Photograph: King’s Cliffe Heritage“You can’t overstate the importance of the Thorpe album at the Soane nor the broader understanding of the period it gives Not until Wren do we find a similar range of skills brought to bear,” Guerci told me over coffee this autumn “It is really rather strange to finally meet someone with the surname so constantly in my head!” An earlier catalogue of Thorpe’s album was made in the 1960s by Sir John Summerson He judged it then as “perhaps the most important relic in existence of architectural drawings and designs in the reigns of Elizabeth and James I” a reader in architecture at the University of Kent which I have since held gingerly in my own arms is in fact one of only two such surviving groups of drawings The other is the Smythson Collection kept at the Royal Institute of British Architects But crucially, says Guerci, it was Thorpe who first imagined the grand stately home as we know it. He set a template for English country living that went out around the world. “Thorpe’s relevance within a defining moment in British architecture is paramount,” Guerci writes on the Soane website “The period sees the establishment of what we might call a truly English style characterised by an eclectic and highly experimental mixture of vernacular and continental features or indeed in one of Thorpe’s plans for his own house Guerci’s 2021 book about London’s original Golden Mile also shows how Thorpe’s aesthetic shaped the look of central London But there are many unanswered questions that still drive Guerci’s researches Among them is the issue of which designs are original Thorpes and which sketches were made simply for his own amusement A statue of John Thorpe by H Wenlock Rollins on the facade of the Victoria and Albert Museum Photograph: PjrStatues/AlamyThe Midlands left far behind him Thorpe rubbed shoulders with famous Elizabethans such as Sir Robert Devereux Proximity with him is particularly pleasing And there are other coincidences that now seem especially fitting despite this being exactly the kind of “after-the-fact” reasoning I used to scorn that when I visited the English Heritage-owned remains of Kirby Hall near Corby a couple of years ago I was so impressed with the place It turns out this building was one of the first my ancestor had had a hand in He wrote that he “layd ye first stone” as a young boy in 1570 Leafing through the original drawings in the archive at the Soane it is evident that John Thorpe travelled across Britain to make a visual record of the homes of many noblemen before going on to develop the look of the Strand and then sketch important buildings in European cities His drawing of Westminster Abbey notably includes a little representation of the skeleton of Queen Elizabeth lying in her tomb was the obscure Latin phrase Supervidens non videns which means something like “the overseer does not see” – implying that it takes the eye of another to truly appreciate possessions or property A memorial plaque at King’s Cliffe’s village church promised further information I found the aftermath of a harvest festival celebration in full swing Members of the friendly congregation showed me to a half-hidden carved stone high up on the wall of the entrance to the north transept This stone is not the only mark the Thorpes left on the village bequeathed to King’s Cliffe on John Thorpe’s death in London in 1654 Translated from Latin its inscription read: Guerci is to deliver a paper on John Thorpe with the title Re-tackling the beast: The Book of Architecture of John Thorpe in Sir John Soane’s Museum at London’s Society of Antiquaries during the New Insights Conference He also has plans for a virtual exhibition on the Soane site in the coming year on the theme of “Drawing buildings: observation invention and the architect in Early Modern England” All Saints church in King’s Cliffe. Photograph: ASP Religion/AlamyMy own researches have made me wonder whether the invention of something as basic as a corridor might ever have been patented. Am I secretly heir to the corridor fortune? An expert has informed me, sadly, that Thorpe’s innovations came just too early for the Patent Office. Comfortingly, though, I was told the corridor was just the kind of solution to a technical problem that would later have merited legal status, its chief advantage being the way it let servants pop in and out of rooms without disturbing the grandees gliding from one salon to another. There may be no chance of gaining anything more than an insight into the past from my discovery. But this, I now admit, is the real appeal of family history. Alex Graham, creator of the monumentally successful BBC show Who Do You Think You Are?, confesses he was also a sceptic at first. “I wish I could say I had faith in the project, but the truth is, while I knew it was a smart way to do history, its ability to unlock emotion, not just in the participants but in the audience, took me by surprise. And if you’d told me it would still be on TV 20 years later…!” he said. although I honestly do realise the 12-generation chain that connects me to John Thorpe doesn’t enhance my status one iota I used to sit down with a pack of felt-tip pens and repeatedly draw blueprints for the striking rural homes I hoped one day to live in This is the archive of The Observer up until 21/04/2025 The Observer is now owned and operated by Tortoise Media You are using an outdated browser. People tell me the story and then I create concepts from that, then they decide what they want to go with.” Read moreWhat they ended up with was anything but your standard silver cup The final taonga (a Maori term for a highly prized or treasured possession) has an auburn wooden base that holds a sculpture made of two particular and special pieces of willow – the bat Martin Crowe used to score a century against England in 1994 and the one Graham Thorpe used to score two against New Zealand in 1997 From various angles it appears to be shaped like an upended canoe or a toucan’s beak flowing pattern and inlaid with one circular pieces of jade on each side specifically a stone the Maori call inanga the highest mountain or the highest viewpoint and then the very base of it is the foundation of them being able to get to the highest point,” Ngawati says “So that incorporates in particular their family members on each side everyone who supported them is the foundation for them to be able to go up the mountain walk the path towards the highest achievement The pounamu for us is the really top place The process of creating the Crowe-Thorpe Trophy took about a month, starting with discussions with New Zealand Cricket about the design continuing with them liaising with the two players’ families about getting their bats and finally the creation of the taonga itself “It was a long process for New Zealand Cricket to talk with Graham’s wife around getting the bat,” Ngawati says We’re just really thankful for them to entrust in us to be able to create a wonderful trophy and tribute to them both There’s a lot of conversation that can come through I’m a bit of a hermit so I sat down with this trophy and went through a really long process with it I received these two bats and I have to think of them as being weapons really the weapons they used to fight the different countries I can smell the sweat and my senses start feeling I connect with the people I’m working with as best I can Although I had limited time I still had the opportunity to build that relationship Especially with willow – I’d never used willow before but Kookaburra sent me a few bits so I was able to get a bit of a smell of it I know nothing about this place but my whakapapa which New Zealand won by beating South Africa in last year’s Test series That trophy commemorates a deadly train crash on Christmas Eve 1953 while the Crowe-Thorpe trophy commemorates two beloved and hugely missed former players They are objects of celebration and also of mourning specialises in making custom taonga of all kinds Free weekly newsletterSubscribe to our cricket newsletter for our writers' thoughts on the biggest stories and a review of the week’s action The Crowe-Thorpe Trophy is displayed at the Hagley Oval Photograph: Martin Hunter/lintottphoto/Shutterstock“I’m a co-creator You’ve got the story and a lot of it is deep It does take its toll on me but I’ve experienced a lot of grief and loss so it’s been part of my journey and is part of life’s journey we’re not fully spiritual so that transition “The very top of the trophy is them ascending to … whatever people want to call it I talked to New Zealand Cricket about that as well in the game of cricket or just anybody really it’s for them to start on their journey now.” Ngawati is already working on some more projects with CNZ “In New Zealand once you establish trust with a carver who’s connected to the land generally you’ll keep giving them opportunities but I’m only as good as my last creation,” he says Having never been to a first-class game before Ngawati was in Christchurch for the start of the first Test wanting to see the trophy and get many pictures of it,” he says “I was able to meet some of Graham Thorpe’s family friends But I’d say it’s not my scene – I wouldn’t spend money to go and do something like that This is an extract from the Guardian’s weekly cricket email, The Spin. To subscribe, just visit this page and follow the instructions After finding out I would be spending the weekend in North Norfolk the first thing I did was get onto the parkrun events page and check out which parkrun I could visit Norfolk is a whole new area for me so I had many to choose from – Holkham (set in a stunning Nature Reserve) Blickling (a beautiful National Trust location) and Sheringham (Robin Hood!!) were the closest to where I was staying But just a little further away was an even more desirable parkrun… Taking place on a school’s play field and through an adjacent park North Walsham has something the other three couldn’t offer – the letter N for my alphabet challenge and North for my compass challenge And it seems lots of others had the same idea as there were tourists from Brighton Suffolk and from in and around Norfolk too Once I’d decided North Walsham was the parkrun for me I checked on the Facebook page to see whether volunteers were needed and for any other news I had just bought a tutu for a charity race so I was very excited to see that this Saturday the 22nd was going to be a tutu (2-2) day – I’ve never attended a parkrun tutu event before and it certainly didn’t disappoint I came by car and the tips about parking on the website were helpful helped by the tickle of runners all heading in the same direction and a friendly local on a bike It was a cloudy morning and a strong wind was blowing across the field as I made my way over to the first timers’ briefing There were 26 first timers this week – 4 brand new to parkrun (welcome Jamie Robinson Esmai Kilgallon and Andrew Couper) and *22* others attending North Walsham for the first time The volunteers were very welcoming and the whole atmosphere was friendly and fun There was a great mix of ages across the 101 runners and walkers with attendees in every age group from 10 to 75-79 (apart from the 15-19 category probably still sleeping!) and it felt like a very inclusive After the first timers’ briefing we made our way over to the start line milestones and birthdays were celebrated (congratulations Alan Gosman on your 25th parkrun and happy birthday to Georgina Peck) the new Vitality parkwalker (thank you Ivan Block) was introduced after-parkrun cake was announced and then we set off The wind had died down and the sun had come out and it was a wonderful sight seeing all the tutus (and non tutus) starting their 5km run/walk to the finish line The course was very well laid out with cones at every corner and the marshals were very friendly and encouraging I started off a bit too fast and dropped back only to be overtaken by a runner in a matching green tutu who was run/walking the course I would catch him up as he walked and then he’d overtake me when he ran pointed out by another runner just behind us After two full laps of the school field and adjoining park we had just one lap of the school field left – the sun was beating down on us by this point and my opponent was mostly ahead but I wasn’t giving up just yet I upped my pace for the last km and overtook as he walked his last stretch before the finishing funnel I crossed the line in position 20 and he came in at 22 – a very fitting finishing token and one that perhaps makes him the winner of the battle after all Thank you to Martin Wall for encouraging me to run faster and not give up and to Mark Palmer entertaining the silliness and helping to make this morning even more enjoyable © parkrun Limited (Company Number: 07289574) No part of this site may be reproduced in whole or in part in the world of Bandcamp The Stories Behind Big Crown Records’ Soulful Singles Composer Meara O’Reilly Brings Hockets Into the Future Backxwash joins the show to discuss her recent release That Surrey should be playing at Guildford the day before the news that Graham Thorpe died is a sad irony to such a dreadful tragedy that he played his finest and most important innings for the county and one of the best of an illustrious career Leading the way in the County Championship and having not won the title for 28 years Surrey were in trouble against leading chasers Hampshire Thorpe’s fellow left handers Mark Butcher and Ian Ward provided him with the perfect platform of 107 but there was no question who held the key to the match His magnificent 164 over more than six hours contained all the Thorpe trademarks – the push-drive on the offside which later took on a full flourish as conditions eased flicks into gaps on the legside and whippy pulls which found the short boundaries remaining unbeaten all summer in becoming champions but our left-handed genius had photocopied the map” That comment underlined the regard in which his peers held Thorpe the first England men’s player for 20 years to score a century on his Test debut – against Australia in 1993 at Trent Bridge – and who would play 100 Tests (plus 82 ODIs) over the next 12 years before a back injury curtailed his career aged 36 The youngest of three highly competitive brothers Graham’s all-round sporting talent was obvious from an early age and he might have chosen a career in football had things worked out differently having been selected for England schoolboys and having a trial at Brentford But it was playing cricket at Farnham – the family lived nearby in Wrecclesham – where he made an early impact being selected for the first team aged 15 and gaining a valuable lesson in how to bat in all conditions and against opponents whose greater experience compensated for lesser ability where he moved up through the age groups and made his first-class debut against Leicestershire at The Oval in June 1988 batting number eight and making his initial impact as a medium-pacer who trapped David Gower LBW – albeit off an inside edge which went unnoticed by the umpire – as his maiden victim A much more accurate snapshot of his potential came the following season when he scored his maiden first-class century against Hampshire at Basingstoke – just down the road from home – in making 115 against Malcolm Marshall in full cry He would go on to score 1,132 Championship runs that year amid a struggling Surrey side and earn selection for an England A tour the first of four in a long apprenticeship losing his county place for a time in 1990 would teach him the value of coping with poor form and failure a lesson he regarded as invaluable later in his career and when coaching youngsters moving up through the game Thorpe’s ability to tailor his game to the circumstances of a match stood out on his first full England tour First came a long and patient 86 at Port of Spain which sculpted out a first innings lead and looked to be carrying England towards a hard-earned victory until they collapsed to 46 all out in the second innings Then came 84 off just 129 balls in Barbados sharing a partnership of 150 with twin centurion Alec Stewart which saw the previously dominant West Indian attack despatched to all parts of the Kensington Oval The pair had always batted well together – their running between the wickets based on understanding as well as speed – and now the two Chelsea supporters formed an alliance which would contribute to the hosts being beaten on that ground for the first time in 59 years While Thorpe would enjoy a welter of medals towards the end of his Surrey career as a key member of Adam Hollioake’s team the domination of West Indies soon followed by the Australians under Allan Border and company It meant the 6,744 Test runs he scored had to be hard-earned trying to push his country towards competitive totals which often proved to be anything but Few could unpick the mysteries of a Warne or Muralitharan as well as he could relishing the elite competition and occasionally flashing his shy smile amid the battle After a period of time away from the game in 2002 scoring a magnificent century against South Africa at The Oval in 2003 launching a successful autumn to his international career His resilience was underlined by scoring 1,635 runs at an average of 56.37 in the twilight years of his international career under the captaincy of Michael Vaughan In all he scored 21,937 first-class runs at 45 when Surrey named one of the rooms in the pavilion after him Retirement from playing – having been awarded the MBE in 2006 – saw him move into coaching working with young talents like David Warner and Steve Smith he returned to Surrey as batting specialist initially before taking on the Second XI and guiding the initial careers of many young Surrey players who would go onto play vital roles as their cricketing talents blossomed this time in developing the likes of Joe Root and Ben Stokes putting them on the path to World Cup glory If you want an enduring image of Graham Thorpe picture him batting on a parched ground overseas doing battle with one of the great spinners of the world clipping them or lapping them drivers seeking safety onto residential streets and through limited exit points in the area Residents in the forested neighborhood vulnerable to wildfires asked the city of Spokane to help them prepare for a potential fire and they turned out in large numbers for the voluntary evacuation drill on a rainy morning the eve of Bloomsday “This exercise was really spearheaded and pushed by the community residents and I think says a lot about our community cohesion and dedication to preparing ourselves and taking care of our neighborhoods and each other,” said Sarah Nuss Washington State Patrol and volunteers met before the drill at Grandview Park to coordinate the drill plans First responders and volunteers then headed to one of three intersections – 14th Avenue and Lindeke Street and Thorpe Road and Westwood Lane – where neighborhood residents would exit if there was a wildfire or “observers” wearing bright green construction vests documented the number of drivers at each intersection by taking a written tally or having stopped drivers scan a code with their cellphone before turning at each intersection drivers turning north from 14th onto Lindeke scanned the northbound code and drivers turning south on Lindeke scanned the southbound code Between 150 and 200 drivers came down the neighborhood hill and turned at the 14th and Lindeke intersection A long line of cars could be seen at the intersection shortly after the Level 3 evacuation alert went out to residents at about 10 a.m the program behind the public alert and warning notifications sent to Spokane area residents to receive evacuation alerts Saturday for the drill Many residents received Level 1 (be ready) 2 (get set) and 3 (go now) on their phones Nuss encouraged all Spokane County residents to sign up for ALERT Spokane at spokanecounty.gov/3007/Alert-Spokane CodeRED is the mobile application that accompanies ALERT Spokane Nuss said the data collected at the three intersections will be compiled and discussed in a meeting Monday when she and other officials review how the drill went She said she will draft a review and improvement plan that entails what they can do better to prepare residents and improve egress routes Nuss said the drill was important to understand strains on the egress points neighbors mentioned and how they can be improved “There will always be bottlenecks in evacuations but when it comes to underdeveloped or less-developed areas it’s important to understand where those are and if they can truly withstand the incoming of first response apparatus while egressing the residents that live in that neighborhood,” Nuss said Mary Beth McGinley and Elizabeth Goldsmith observers who volunteered at the 14th and Lindeke intersection said many more residents participated in the drill than they expected secretary of the Grandview/Thorpe Neighborhood Council said she was extremely proud of her neighbors noting they were engaged despite the bad weather on a Saturday “It wasn’t a test of first responders,” McGinley said “It was a test of the system and what would happen in an evacuation and I feel like that was done extremely well.” member of the Comstock Neighborhood Council said she wanted to gather information from the drill to take back to her neighborhood Goldsmith said she worries about the limited number of exit points and traffic congestion if residents had to evacuate her neighborhood or the Grandview/Thorpe Neighborhood She also expressed concern about emergency vehicles getting into the Grandview/Thorpe Neighborhood with the large volume of cars evacuating worry that adding more housing developments would only cause more traffic congestion when neighbors choose one of the few streets to leave the neighborhood during times of evacuation McGinley said she believes developers and city officials are not looking at these housing projects with a holistic approach “I think everything is evaluated a little bit in a vacuum,” she said who participated in the evacuation drill with her husband said she wasn’t as concerned about a possible evacuation when she moved into the neighborhood 35 years ago because fewer people lived there meaning everyone could easily evacuate with no traffic congestion her concern level for wildfires is high as the wooded neighborhood has become more developed “It just has gotten to be more and more of a concern as more homes go in and as the climate changes,” she said Johnson said she was impressed with first responders and the American Red Cross which had a booth about wildfire preparedness at Grandview Park get up this morning and see fire people and the police people here and feeling like they really are trying to figure out a way to make this safer and to support our community,’ ” Johnson said Give directly to The Spokesman-Review's Northwest Passages community forums series -- which helps to offset the costs of several reporter and editor positions at the
