a free weekend provided the opportunity for me to meet up with parkrun tourist friends at a new event which I had been promised was a challenging trail course I was glad to have visited after a spell of dry weather and winds which had dried the surface but confess to having spent too much of the run looking at the ground instead of appreciating the views Perhaps I should have taken more notice of the parkwalk campaign and joined those enjoying a relaxing country walk around the course and appreciating what Uckfield has to offer one of the greatest pressures can be finding the event but here that was easy with the Rugby club well signposted and a helpful car park marshal waving at parkrunners directing us to park conveniently close to the startline The run director's briefing warned that this is not a PB course and as I ran round I thought that attempting an overall PB here would be to ignore the challenges of a trail course a combination of the remarkable band of volunteer marshals and well placed arrows meant that even the report writer (who could get lost doing circuits of a running track) found his way safely round all the turns I’m not sure whether the local duck population was bemoaning the dry weather or whether the nearby marshal was simply getting all his ducks in a row of whom 61 were first timers and 20 recorded new Personal Bests Representatives of 27 different clubs took part Graham Stevens completed his 50th run and Tosca Anstis completed her 100th run Les and Anne Eames both completed their 100th different event alongside friends and family from Biggin Runways They become members of the “Cowell club” (named after the first person to achieve this feat) it will take them many years to catch up with third finisher Steven Ramek who has run at 470 different events (and enjoyed Uckfield enough to make a return visit today) and one of the most widely travelled parkrunners John Matthews completing his 601st different event today Today’s event was made possible by 27 volunteers: Kathleen SOUTHALL • Vanessa HARROLD • Peter LOOSE • David WEBB • Karen WEBB • Mark CHAPMAN • Rachel WILSON • Gracie MILLOY • Dominic TARN • Gracie Louisa MILLOY • was attracted to the idea of the mud fest they'd experienced therefore I was very glad that the good weather in recent weeks had meant the course had considerably dried out in time for our visit We'd stayed very locally overnight and so had the most relaxed shortest ever journey (about 2 min max walk!) to a parkrun where were welcomed at the first timers briefing with all the other tourists and first times by Stephen Green Stephen gave a very light hearted and humorous description of the course though with a warning to be aware of baby goslings that may look like mud instead The main briefing was given by RD Emily Gibson who was completing her 50th volunteer milestone Other milestones this morning included Sara Arnold on 25 and an unofficial but not insignificant 200 volunteering efforts from Rowan Dawson - congratulations everyone We were also told that Beryl Stewart was celebrating a very special birthday this morning and as a lady never reveals her age I can only say Beryl looks fabulous for 21 (again) and well done on spending your birthday the best way A big thank you Beryl too for the lovely cakes post run I'd like to be able to say that I really enjoyed the actual parkrun itself once we got underway but I was concentrating so hard on where I was placing my feet that I can't really remember much of it now I briefly appreciated the gorgeous view across to the other side and knowing it was all the way back down to the finish from here I certainly wasn't as speedy as the top 3 finishers who all set shiny new PB's this morning There were 8 brand new first timers this morning so the congratulations and welcome to the parkrun community go to Callum Cox but it's the best way to spend your Saturday mornings from here on in A final well done from me goes to Junior runner Matthew Howells who achieved the highest age grade percentage this morning at 81.03% An amazing achievement for someone so young Thank you to all at Uckfield parkrun for making us feel so welcome today and maybe next time I'll visit when it's muddy of whom 69 were first timers and 24 recorded new Personal Bests Representatives of 25 different clubs took part The event was made head down to Uckfield's Bridge Cottage on Saturday the 17th of May from 10AM- 3PM A bright and breezy morning for Uckfield parkrun after a busy first timers briefing with 44 runners I watched as the runners made their way around the rugby pitch while I rested my legs ahead of the Brighton Marathon on Sunday They reported beautiful scenery along the course   It didn't seem a minute before the first runners were on their way back an impressive performance for his first parkrun We’d chosen Uckfield as it provided a good opportunity to tick off the letter U on our alphabeteer plenty of free parking and a van providing takeaway drinks afterwards of whom 46 were first timers and 21 recorded new Personal Bests Representatives of 19 different clubs took part The event was made possible by 31 Broad “We feel it would be perfect as a local meeting place where people could gather over one of our craft ales or a coffee.” the brewery began crowdfunding for a brewery tap but several potential excited at the prospect of being able to invest thousands of pounds to revitalise the building which has been such a landmark in the town for generations.” Exterior redecoration would restore the signal box to its former glory in line with building regulations and preserving its historic character plans are for some tasteful modernisation to include better toilet facilities as well as campaigns we survived Uckfield parkrun #216 this morning—and what a morning it was it sure gave our running shoes (and bare feet) a proper workout A few of you speed demons even managed PBs which is a miracle in itself considering the course was more hill and mudslide than flat terrain and a whole crowd of first-timers—including one brave soul tackling their first-ever parkrun a special shout-out to James from Vegan Runners not in those fancy glove-like things that look like you’re wearing toe socks—actually barefoot My own toes were numb by the time I squelched to the start line which—spoiler alert—were not nearly as waterproof as I thought thank you for braving the mud and joining our amazing team of volunteers today Without you and all our other fantastic volunteers I had the honour of tail-walking with the incredible Camilla sporting her Macmillan green shirt and volunteering despite no longer being able to run Camilla has an incurable brain tumour but still manages to spread positivity and has logged over 250 parkruns as a volunteer and tourist We gingerly edged our way around the mud—both remaining upright Side note: I’m convinced it’s easier to run through the mud than walk Camilla had taken enough photos to document our muddy adventure We were also joined by bride and groom Laura and Alex showing up to run a 5k in the mud on their wedding day They were due to be married at 1:30 at Buxted Park Hotel Here’s hoping they managed to scrape off all the mud before saying “I do!” Today’s run was extra special as it teamed up with Macmillan Cancer Support we hoped to raise some extra funds for this marvellous charity that provides care and support to cancer patients at every stage of their journey Your generosity means a lot to those who rely on Macmillan’s services I’ve got my own personal reason to raise money for Macmillan I’ll be running the Royal Parks Half Marathon on Sunday October 13th—so please take a moment to read about my journey below if you’re able A huge thanks to everyone who came out today—whether you ran of whom 26 were first timers and 4 recorded new Personal Bests Representatives of 15 different clubs took part The event was parkruns across the country announcing they had made the decision to cancel the event on 23rd November Uckfield announced the course would be muddy and not to wear carbon plated road shoes by the wind and rain and couldn't get back to sleep I set off from Ashford in Kent not long before 7am The driving conditions on the drive across to Uckfield were horrible Stopping for a quick cuppa en route I made it safely to Uckfield Rugby Club By now it was light and the rain had thankfully stopped but the wind kept whipping up I am so glad I took the advice and wore trail shoes I don't often get the opportunity to do trail runs so I was looking forward to a parkrun done entirely on trail When I arrived I thought I would be the only person running Eventually people escaped their cars and made their way over to the start/finish area I got chatting to a runner from Folkestone who had made his way over from Kent like myself There were tourists from Ashford (that'll be me)  55 hardly characters congregated for the Run Director's briefing done by our RD Emma   We set off and immediately questioned my life choices I knew the route into Park would be sodden I didn't count for the perimeter of the rugby pitches to be ankle deep in mud and water in place I definitely think the sense of camaraderie increases tenfold in conditions like this One lap of the pitches and we were off into park No point in trying to avoid the mud and puddles I committed to take the shortest route through the mud I began to get flashbacks of being at school and doing Cross Country in the hills of Northumberland where.I grew up   On the out part of the course I didn't think it was that windy That was until I got to the Pill Box and turned up the hill at went toe to toe with Storm Bert But the views at the top were definitely worth the climb It was into the wind all the way back to the finish and by the time I got back I was covered in mud In conditions like this you have to hand it to the 28 volunteers: Graham WEST • Linda JACKETT • Lorraine WEST • Emma BUSSEY • Chris RUSSELL • David TURNER • Dominic TARN • Jamie PENFOLD • Nicholas HARDSTONE • Paul CRAWLEY • Kathryn MARTYN • Elisabeth DAWSON • Rowan DAWSON • Bea SIMPKIN • Stephen GREEN • Matt KUZEMKO • Rodney DEMPSTER • Ella KING • Amelia TURNER • Emma HARVEY • Nick CHAPMAN • Nell HARVEY • Fern RUANE • Fae LANCASTER • Mateo SPILL • Alan COLLARD • William BUHLMAN • Leasa BUHLMAN Each one gave a smile and enthusiastically shouted encouragement the heat from my heaters slowly drying the mud on my legs the whole way That is my U gained and I only have my Y and Z parkruns left to get my alphabet which I will hopefully complete in 2025  I definitely want to come back to Uckfield in the summer and negotiate the cows and potentially drier conditions Nonetheless this was a fantastic morning and cannot thank Emma and the team enough for putting on such a great event in some very challenging conditions Certainly the muddiest parkrun I have done beating The Pastures in Northumberland which I did on Christmas Day last year And also one of the prettiest parkruns too For best viewing experience of this website Please light showers Largely dry with variable cloud and sunny spells Cloudier towards the Kent coast with a chance of showers with variable amounts of cloud and bright or sunny spells throughout the period Dry across the majority of the UK with clear or sunny spells for many areas as high pressure dominates the weather pattern across the UK thicker cloud is likely in the far north for a time with some patchy rain and drizzle in north and northwest Scotland cloud will probably thicken in parts the southwest with a few showers in places with a small chance some of these could be heavy or thundery Winds will mostly be light with daytime temperatures likely to be slightly above normal for the time of year although there is a chance of some cold nights Fairly typical weather for the time of year is most likely through this period fine and dry weather is more likely to dominate although this may be interspersed by occasional spells of rain and showers with a risk of heavy rain and thunderstorms in places temperatures will most likely be near to or slightly above average Recent petitions have been launched by locals and backed up by Uckfield's MP Mims Davies to protect services at the Community Hospital but it looks increasingly likely that they have fallen on deaf ears.  who provide a range of day surgery cases at Uckfield have said that it wants to increase the overall number of day surgery procedures by moving treatments to hospitals in Eastbourne and Hastings The consultant-led unit provides day surgery for vascular, maxillofacial (dental and skin cancer lesions) Now Kamsons Pharmacy will close its doors in a few weeks after the NHS 'massively” increased its rent Kamsons has run a pharmacy at Uckfield Hospital for 30 years but says 'the double whammy of a rent hike plus reductions in NHS funding of pharmacies means it is no longer viable NHS Property says it has tried to negotiate with Kamsons and offered a rent 'significantly lower' than the market rate It is now talking to the GP surgery which may move into the vacant unit after Kamsons moves out on 1 March this year The condition of the front wall of a property on Uckfield High Street was brought to the attention of Wealden District Council Building Control by a local resident on 4 February 2025 several further residents have contacted us with their concerns Site visits by a qualified building inspector have been taking place since the 4 February to assess and monitor the situation Our primary concern throughout is public safety After exhaustive but unsuccessful attempts to contact the owner it was decided to use our emergency powers under section 78 of the building Act 1984 to take such action as necessary and reasonable to remove this potential danger On 20 March a report was commissioned and received from a qualified structural engineer and this confirmed the need to provide temporary support to the façade of the building A temporary highway closure was put in place by East Sussex Highways on the 20 March to provide protection to the public whilst the situation could be further reviewed with a private contractor engaged by the East Sussex Building Control Partnership Giving consideration to the listed status of the building temporary support will be provided in the afternoon of 21 March from the exterior only This will need to extend onto the public highway This will involve partial closure of the road and traffic management but will enable local businesses to stay open and also provide access on the opposite pavement for pedestrians This will temporarily remove any danger to the public however further actions will be required involving repair to provide a permanent solution and remove these restrictions Get more by becoming an Ashdown
