Leeds Rhinos claimed a headline-grabbing win over old adversaries St Helens in the final game of day one at Super League’s Magic Weekend There were also victories for Leigh Leopards and leaders Hull Kingston Rovers at Newcastle United’s iconic home at St James’ Park on Saturday Day two saw Huddersfield Giants finally stop the rot with a much-needed win against Hull FC while Wigan Warriors and Wakefield Trinity also registered victories Leeds legend and Sky Sports pundit Barrie McDermott gives Love Rugby League his Super League Team of the Week Arthur Mourgue impressed yet again for Hull KR and Lachie Miller continued his fine form against St Helens on Saturday by finishing off a brilliant team try and defending strongly too But I’m going to go for Jai Field because the Wigan man was simply superb in his team’s victory over Warrington It was difficult to put a price on this victory for the Giants – a win on the board at the 10th time of asking Swift fully played his part against his old club in yardage in particular making a hugely impressive 133 metres in a superb shift The Aussie centre is a class act and he made a big contribution to Wigan’s victory over Warrington on Sunday Keighran racked up 143 metres and scored a try It was obviously a very disappointing day for the Black and Whites But Litten stood up well in a losing cause and was probably his team’s best player Wakey absolutely trounced Cas Tigers and Walmsley took centre stage with a superb display to earn the man-of-the-match honours He scored twice and was unlucky not to finish the game with a hat-trick blessed with God-given talent and the ability to win games on his own His influence during the first half in particular against Saints was huge and – while I queried the Rhinos’ design to sign Connor – he is more than proving his worth in the famous blue and amber jersey I have been saying for a while that Jack needed to be playing regularly and he is now getting that opportunity assured and controlled display from Sinfield Jr with dad Kev and mum Jayne watching on proudly from the stands The Geordie boy is living his best life – scoring a try at the home of his beloved Newcastle United and then doing the Alan Shearer celebration That was the highlight of a strong all-round performance from the big front rower Ipape was man of the match in Leigh’s thrilling win over Catalans and continues to prove so important to Adrian Lam’s team Jez Litten deserves a mention too for his outstanding display in Hull KR’s win over Salford What a performance by the prop and what a magic moment for his brilliant 70-metre try the ambition to make that kind of break as a middle was simply sensational and capped a brilliant display by Faatili who scored twice His Trinity team-mate Mike McMeeken also deserves a mention for another formidable display in the front row – what a signing he has been this season Wakefield are a club on the rise and Jay Pitts quietly continues to be a consistently impressive performer in their ranks And the thing about Pitts is that he’s been doing it for many years now – he’s one of the most underrated players in Super League Gannon recently announced he is leaving Leeds at the end of the season to go to the NRL But it is not affecting his performances in a Rhinos jersey and he was fantastic against Saints in defence and attack to show why he is so highly rated on both sides of the world sweat and tears to his hometown club for so many years now he was hugely instrumental in helping Luke Robinson’s men to victory over Hull FC scoring a try and working tirelessly all game © Planet Sport Limited 2025 • All Rights Reserved Muslim groups in Dewsbury and Wakefield have helped to raise £170,000 towards a new MRI suite for a Castleford with yet another Mike McMeeken-inspired display The 30-year-old is getting better with age and the platform laid by the prop and his Wakefield counterpart Caius Faatili in the opening exchanges destroyed the Tigers’ resolve Chris Atkin came off the bench to debut for Castleford whilst George Lawler replaced the injured Jeremiah Simbiken in the back-row Jake Trueman and Jack Croft all returned for Wakefield with the likes of Renouf Atoni and Caleb Hamlin-Uele suffering injuries To say Castleford were pinned in their half for the opening exchanges would be an understatement as terrific Trinity defence kept Danny McGuire’s men to limited yards And that pressure finally told when Trueman gave Max Jowitt enough space on the last tackle to scythe through soft defence with nine minutes gone Successive penalties against Castleford didn’t exactly help their cause – and neither did an unsuccessful captain’s challenge just twelve minutes in this time with an extremely harsh call going in their favour as McMeeken picked up a loose ball – despite appearing to knock on – and cantered through to send over Faatili under the posts Walmsley then went close but was forced into touch before Alex Mellor was held up by a desperate Walmsley tackle Somehow video referee James Vella adjudged Mellor in touch and so handed Wakefield a 20-metre restart before Isaiah Vagana was lucky not to see yellow for a high shot on Dan Okoro It took until 34 minutes and a Trinity error for the Tigers to finally register their first points off a scrum move that ended with Josh Simm finishing well Rowan Milnes couldn’t convert but Castleford were back to 12-4 Trinity weren’t to be denied a third as half-time approached though as Walmsley produced an acrobatic finish with Innes Senior caught napping Jowitt struck the post but Wakefield led 16-4 at the break There was no let-up at the beginning of the second half either as an Okoro knock-on handed Wakefield a glorious chance – and a delightful Mason Lino kick found Tom Johnstone who dotted down with ballerina feet keeping him in the field of play Jowitt converted expertly from the touchline Walmsley almost had another moments later but this time the flying winger lost control in the act of leaping once more Castleford punished that error when Sam Wood dived over after Daejarn Asi palmed back a Milnes kick on the hour missed the extras with the Tigers behind 14 at 22-8 The electric Walmsley was enjoying a field day at times and his break and kick almost yielded more Trinity points but Jowitt knocked on with the line begging this time the Wakefield winger did it all himself with a beautiful finish after Harvey Smith had carved open Castleford down the middle Jowitt couldn’t convert but he was on target moments later when Faatili rampaged 60 metres flicking off a woeful Milnes tackle and rounding fullback Tex Hoy for a quite magnificent effort GAMESTAR: Mike McMeeken is like a fine wine – getting better with age GAMEBREAKER: Two Wakefield tries either side of half-time proved killer blows for Castleford HIGHLIGHT REEL: Caius Faatili’s try eight minutes from time saw the prop rampage over from 60 metres Five Super League players have been charged with offences from the Match Review Panel: but Hull FC prop Liam Knight is not one of them Knight was sent off during Hull’s Magic Weekend defeat to Huddersfield on Sunday afternoon for a dangerous tackle on Giants back Sam Hewitt The Australian was shown a straight red card seconds after Sam Eseh was sent to the sin-bin – leading to fears he would receive a hefty disciplinary charge the Match Review Panel have decided he will face no further action for his tackle The notes of that incident say: “Player comes in a reckless manner however contact is mainly all on the body and contact with the head is secondary and minimal Player comes in front and arm is loose ready to wrap but impact of contact takes opponent away.” Knight’s Hull team-mate Eseh has been charged He was hit with Grade C Head Contact for a tackle on Matty English in the closing seconds of the first half Huddersfield prop Tom Burgess was hit with a Grade B Late Contact charge earning him three points on his disciplinary record Wakefield’s Isaiah Vagana was charged with Grade B Head Contact and given three penalty points – taking his total to 4.5 for the last 12 months Giants pair Matty English and Sam Hewitt were also both charged with Grade B Dangerous Contact and given three penalty points No players were suspended – with none reaching the threshold of six points But it is the absence of Knight from the disciplinary sheet that will cause the biggest uproar and debate without question 👉🏻 Josh Papali’i makes NRL contract admission as Super League irrepressible through the middle against Salford George Flanagan – Huddersfield Giants A superb display from the youngster against Hull FC Wakefield Trinity boss Daryl Powell and Castleford Tigers counterpart Danny McGuire have both criticised the delays present in Super League at the minute after their Magic Weekend clash lasted longer than two hours The meeting between the two West Yorkshire rivals at St James’ Park on Sunday night – which ended in a comfortable 32-8 Wakefield win – was the last game of the weekend Numerous decisions were sent upstairs throughout by on-field referee Tom Grant to video referee James Vella both Powell and McGuire had their say on those delays with the main one coming for a tackle on Tigers forward Dan Okoro by Trinity’s Isaiah Vagana in the first half Cas head coach McGuire was satisfied with that outcome when asked about it post-match but was far from happy about the delays on the whole He said: “Some of the stoppages are horrific but we’re taking away any fatigue elements “No player should be tired… when my players are telling me they’re tired “There’s so many stoppages with the video referees and the game’s ugly at times It’s taking what’s good about our game away from it “Make a decision and get on with it.” Since Trinity’s return to Super League Powell hasn’t been shy in airing his frustrations with the video referee process And while he shared McGuire’s anger at the delays again post-match he believes the conversation has been done to death now The veteran coach added:  “I watched the NRL this morning you watch them give a try and it’s either confirmed or they stop it then have a look at it then at least there’s a chance for it (the game) to just carry on even if you change it to that (in Super League) “It’s tough for officials because our camera angles aren’t as good as they are in the NRL or other sports so I reckon there’s a challenge there “We keep shooting ourselves in the foot though really we shouldn’t be talking about it as we are whatever’s best for the sport and for the sepctators Sometimes we’re looking at it 30 times “I can tell on some of them after two looks it’s something we’ve got to do better but I’d like to stop talking about it Max Jowitt Caius Faatili x2 Lachlan Walmsley x2 Tom Johnstone Interchange for Wakefield TrinityJack Croft ON Interchange for Wakefield TrinityCaius Faatili OFF dominant 32-8 Super League Magic Weekend victory over Castleford Tigers, bringing the curtain down on a two-day festival of rugby league at St James' Park in Newcastle. Trinity scored six tries in the success through full-back Max Jowitt, prop Caius Faatili (two), right wing Lachlan Walmsley (two) and left wing Tom Johnstone. Castleford could only respond with two unconverted tries on the day via wing Josh Simm and centre Sam Wood, as the Tigers disappointed with their performance. The victory moves Wakefield on to 10 points in the standings, level with St Helens, Warrington Wolves and Catalans Dragons as their return Super League campaign continues to impress. Please use Chrome browser for a more accessible video player If that score had much to do with good Trinity play, their second seven minutes later owed much to a slice of fortune: captain Mike McMeeken seeking to control a loose ball with his foot, bobbling possession backwards, and then setting off into the space before finding Faatili. Outstanding defence from Walmsley to somehow hold the ball up in-goal as Alex Mellor dived to score halted Castleford's response, with Wakefield's Isaiah Vagana then extremely fortunate to avoid a card of some description having hit Daniel Okoro in the head with his shoulder. In the 32nd minute, Castleford did get onto the scoreboard as Simm finished strongly in the right corner, but Rowan Milnes was unable to convert. Three minutes from the end of the half, Wakefield's commanding lead was restored, though, as Walmsley flew in brilliantly in the corner for a finish of real quality. That score left things 16-4 to Trinity at half-time, and just three minutes into the second half they extended that further as Johnstone claimed a well-weighted Mason Lino kick-pass in the corner to score. Jowitt converted exceptionally for 22-4, and with Wakefield continuing to dictate play, Walmsley attempted his second acrobatic finish of the game, only for the Video Ref to spot him losing the ball in the act of scoring. Castleford notched their second try on the hour mark as captain Wood slid in, but Wakefield were next to come close when Walmsley tore down the right and kicked inside, only for the chasing Jowitt to knock the ball on. Wakey were not to be denied, though, and within moments had their fifth through Walmsley in the corner again after Harvey Smith made the telling break and Lino gorgeously drifted on a pass before looping one over to the right wing. Faatili then lifted the Wakefield fans to their feet in the Leazes End courtesy of a remarkable break and score which started from within his own half and ended under the sticks. Castleford Tigers head coach Danny McGuire told Sky Sports... "I thought we were rubbish. We were soft. We got outmuscled, out-enthused. They were better in every department. It is really tough to take as a coach. "Physically I thought we were really off it today. Consistency - falling in love with ourselves a bit because of one good performance. "You have to do the hard things it takes to win and we didn't do that today. Didn't do any right things today. It is disappointing and frustrating. "I am going to tell them what I feel and think. I have to be honest with them." Wakefield Trinity head coach Daryl Powell told Sky Sports... "I thought the boys were class today. We opened up and expressed ourselves as we got into the game. "I thought the pack out there were phenomenal, they really dominated the game. "The team overall were outstanding today."
