a local post office and newsagents in Watton
Lewis LastAssociate Director - Retail & Leisure
Situated in the affluent village of Watton, on the outskirts of Thetford, Watton Edwards store is located on the village high street and benefits from a high footfall year round. The store is heavily relied on for its services within the local community.
The store has been owned and operated by Deven and Chandi Changela for nearly ten years, who recently sold the business to focus more on family, and other business opportunities.
They comment, “As a small business that had been operational for a decade last year, we made the decision to sell our newsagents. We chose Christie & Co as our partners to facilitate the sale of our business and Lewis Last, who visited the business from the moment we engaged in the thorough discussion, was confident that we would be in safe hands to successfully sell our business. After an arduous nine months we finally achieved our sale.
“We extend a warm welcome to Mr. Ketul Desai to Watton, Norfolk, as the new owner of the business. We genuinely hope that the local community and staff will extend their support and assistance to him too, enabling him to successfully take the business forward.
The store has been purchased by Ketul Desai, an experienced local operator who owns other stores in the region. He comments, “Thank you to Lewis and the Christie & Co team. No deal is not without its bumps in the road, but Lewis was always on hand to assist.
“I am pleased to acquire this business, and I look forward to building on the great work Deven and Chandi have done and the excellent relationship they had with local customers and the wider community.”
Lewis Last, Associate Director at Christie & Co, comments, “I am very pleased to see this sale over the line for Deven and Chandi. It was clear from our first meeting they were very proud of the business they had built after moving out to Watton over a decade ago, and rightly so. The business has become vital to the local community with its Post Office service and its newspaper delivery service is also heavily relied upon by the local residents.
“Whilst this deal had its unexpected challenges, Deven, Chandi and Ketul always maintained a very honest and trust-based relationship, which eventually saw the deal over the line. Well done to all and I look forward to catching up with Ketul and his team in due course.”

Brecon’s Watton Allotment Society tries hard to be inclusive and facilities for green-fingered members of Brecon Mind and gardeners with disabilities have always been top of the agenda.
With this in mind, the committee decided to replace the rickety, plastic storage cupboards used by those members with raised bed gardens.
Thanks to grants from the Brecon Beacons National Park Sustainable Development Fund and Brecon Town Council, the cupboards have been replaced with brand new, lockable cupboards constructed from sustainably sourced wood.
The aim of the Bannau Brycheiniog Sustainable Development Fund is to support projects that help to improve the quality of life in communities and the committee believes this has now been achieved.
Joint Chairperson, Jackie Thomas said: “We are very grateful for the grants which allow us to continue making our fantastic allotments accessible to all garden lovers.
“The cupboards will be useful additions to the plots we have for our less able gardeners and we hope they will do so for many years to come.”

Improvements included building a new storm tank
relining over 144m of sewer pipes to prevent bursts
and installing nearly 4km of new pipes to serve new homes
This project was part of a larger programme of improvements that will increase the resilience across the East of England which is likely to see the impact of the climate emergency – like drought and flooding – more keenly than anywhere else in the UK
Over £850,000 of this project focused on increasing the storm water storage at Anglian Waters water recycling centre in Threxton Hill
The site is now able to capture and hold over a million litres of rainwater – the equivalent of about 12,500 baths – to protect the environment during heavy rainfall
By expanding the system’s ability to manage heavy rain and storm events
it means the risk of untreated wastewater spills has been reduced
offering greater protection to watercourses in Watton and the surrounding area
Over £600,000 was invested in surface water management in the area
including sewer relining in North Pickenham to stop rainwater entering the sewers through any cracks
This part of the project also included installing water butts and planters to selected customers
These water butts collect rainwater from rooftops
In 2023 Anglian Water released their Thriving East report which found that over 720,000 new residents will be moving to the East of England in the next two decades posing a risk to the region being able to thrive
As well as improving the local environment
nearly 4km of sewer pipes have been laid to serve new homes in Watton to make sure taps are running and toilets are flushing for customers in years to come
Customer Experience Coordinator for the project
“We know how important rivers and the surrounding environment are to our customers and communities in Watton
That’s why we’re pleased to announce the completion of our work to improve local watercourses and enhance resilience in the area
We’d like to thank residents for their patience while we’ve been active in the community over the past year.”
While the final stages of the project were underway
volunteers from Anglian Water’s @one Alliance project team dedicated their time to supporting the local community
repainting the historic cattle weighbridge
and tidying up local spaces such as the Watton Memorial Ground and the Bridle Park

Powys County Council has confirmed plans to sell part of the Watton Car Park in Brecon for £200,000
paving the way for a £15 million development aimed at providing homes for older people
Liberal Democrat cabinet members Cllr Jake Berriman (planning portfolio holder) and Cllr Sian Cox (adult social care) will take a joint delegated decision to sell the land to Wales and West Housing Association (WWHA)
This will facilitate the construction of an Extra Care housing facility
at the nearby Roy Hatton Car Sales site on Free Street
A report prepared for the council stated: “The land has been declared surplus and the procedure outlined in the corporate asset policy in relation to the sale of surplus property has been complied with
the land was valued by the Valuation Office Agency on September 25
an additional £50,000 will be allocated to maintain three trees and plant bushes at an agreed position near the bus station
The report also highlights the importance of this land sale for the success of the project
the development could be scaled back or jeopardised
with the potential loss of “five to seven units,” which would lead to higher costs for future residents
a proposed “dementia-friendly garden” could be at risk
is that WWHA might abandon the scheme entirely and sell the site to recover their costs
Cllrs Liz Rijnenberg and Chris Walsh (both Labour)
have expressed their support for the proposal
“We have been assured that the sale of the extra land was included within the original planning application,” they said
“We will monitor with interest the development of this scheme
The decision is set to take effect next week
following a five-day period during which councillors can call the decision in for scrutiny
Bannau Brycheiniog National Park Authority, which oversees planning in this part of Powys, approved plans for the 66-apartment Extra Care facility a year ago
In doing this they went against the advice of their planning officers
In July, Welsh Government planners issued a holding direction on the proposal, but by August, they decided not to intervene, allowing the permission to be granted.
Extra Care facilities are designed for individuals over the age of 65 and aim to provide independent living with on-site care and support. It is hoped that the new facility will open in 2027.

Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) confirmed a case of highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 strain near Watton
It is not known how many birds are on the site but all poultry at the infected premises will now be humanely culled in an effort to control the spread of the virus
It is the first case of bird flu in the East of England this season and the third in England this year
While outbreaks can devastate the poultry industry, it can spread to humans which makes the disease a public health risk.
A 3km protection zone and 10km surveillance zone have been put in place surrounding the premises
Tom Nicholson-Watton made his Super League debut for Leeds Rhinos in the final game of the 2022 season
coming off the bench in a 46-0 home win over Castleford Tigers

who also came on to make his bow under the lights at Headingley
Nicholson-Watton has enjoyed more first-team experience this year in addition to a loan spell in the Championship with York Knights
making seven appearances for the Rhinos in 2024
with four of those coming under Brad Arthur
Love Rugby League assesses the front-rower’s early impact and potential as he bids to become a first-team regular at Headingley after signing a three-year contract until at least the end of 2027
Despite being a keen footballer a youngster, Nicholson-Watton chose rugby after impressing at both Guiseley Rangers and Stanningley
He attracted the interest of numerous clubs but opted for Leeds Rhinos
his hometown team who he grew up dreaming of playing for
Signed up to the Rhinos scholarship in 2018
the prop went on to captain Mark Butterill’s side in 2019
playing five games and scoring two tries in his final season before he stepped up to the Academy
MY ULTIMATE TEAM: Scott Taylor best 13 of former team-mates including Hull FC and Hull KR icons
He was a regular for Chev Walker’s side
starting on the bench for his first two matches in 2020
He made his first start against Bradford at Headingley before the Covid lockdown
scoring one try in the opening match against London Broncos
Nicholson-Watton was a Reserves player in 2022 and then featured in the Wetherby Whaler Festive Challenge during pre-season before going on to play six times for the Reserves in 2023
He also had the opportunity to play out on loan at Keighley Cougars and impressed during his six outings towards the end of the Championship season
Nicholson-Watton has also represented England Under-16s and Yorkshire Academy

no-nonsense forward who is also blessed with deft handling skills and rugby intelligence
He has also shown impressive character and no little desire to persevere and overcome injuries to finally make his senior bow just three months before his 21st birthday
It was a fitting reward for his resilience and outstanding attitude
He showcased his potential again when featuring for the first time under Brad Arthur in the thumping win over Wigan at Headingley
“I didn’t know heaps about Tom or Ben Littlewood (who made his senior debut in the Wigan game) in terms of how they came through the system here at Leeds Rhinos,” Arthur told Love Rugby League
“But I feel that’s probably been an advantage to me and the group in that I’ve come in with no preconceived ideas
I’ve just judged everyone on what they’re doing right now and the things that I’ve asked them to do.”
DON’T MISS: Every Super League club’s 2025 retention priority with over 120 players heading for open market
Nicholson-Watton was recalled from his loan spell at York earlier this year and featured under Rohan Smith this year before Arthur decided to give him a chance against Wigan
“Tom was playing out in the Championship and I gave him a few things that I wanted to see as part of the style of footy that we wanted to play,” Arthur explained
“I said if he did that then he would get an opportunity and he’s done that
some guys have stepped forward and said they want to play – Tom is one of them
he’s not shy of the collision and he trains hard
He’s just one of those players who the rest of the guys like to play with and that’s usually a good indication
“We’re pleased with the progress that Tom is making.”
