Amazon Web Services (AWS) has reportedly delayed several new data center leases
Analysts at Wells Fargo said that the company has pulled back from its commitments for some colocation facilities
“Over the weekend, we heard from several industry sources that AWS has paused a portion of its leasing discussions on the colocation side (particularly international ones),” Wells Fargo analysts wrote in a note first reported by NBC News
The note added that “the positioning is similar to what we’ve heard recently from Microsoft,” in that both companies are paring back some new projects but not canceling signed deals
In February, TD Cowen analysts reported that Microsoft had walked away from 200MW of data center developments and leases. The next month, that was increased to 2GW
"In recent years, demand for our cloud and AI services grew more than we could have ever anticipated, and to meet this opportunity, we began executing the largest and most ambitious infrastructure scaling project in our history," Microsoft's president of cloud operations said in a LinkedIn post to clarify the reports
any significant new endeavor at this size and scale requires agility and refinement as we learn and grow with our customers
What this means is that we are slowing or pausing some early-stage projects
we will continue to grow strongly and allocate investments that stay aligned with business priorities and customer demand."
This year saw Microsoft lose its position as OpenAI's exclusive cloud provider following the $500bn Stargate data center initiative announced by the AI company
While it retains "right of first refusal" on new capacity
it expects to build less for OpenAI than originally expected
Microsoft said it still plans to spend around $80 billion on data center capex this year
Some of its leases were picked up by Google and Meta
Both AWS and Microsoft's reported lease delays come as tariffs and a troubled global economic outlook risk disrupting the AI data center building boom
Update: Kevin Miller, VP of data centers at AWS, downplayed the pullback in a LinkedIn post: "First and foremost
we continue to see strong demand for both Generative AI and foundational workloads on AWS
We have almost two decades of experience delivering data center capacity to meet customer demands
That experience has taught us to consider multiple solutions in parallel
Some options might end up costing too much
while others might not deliver when we need the capacity
we find that we need more capacity in one location and less in another
and there haven’t been any recent fundamental changes in our expansion plans
they’re able to focus on their business and leave these details to us."

Llanwrtyd Wells author Kathy Biggs is set to release her new novel, Attention All Shipping, a tender and hopeful tale about the complexities of losing and finding family.
The story follows father and daughter, Jack and Grace, as they embark on a journey from the Welsh valleys to Whitby, searching for both the missing piece of their family and themselves. The book will be published by HarperCollins on Thursday, May 8.
Kathy, originally from Yorkshire, moved to Wales in the 1980s. She told the Brecon and Radnor Express: “Grace goes back to live with her dad, Jack, who has dementia. The story starts when she’s coming home from work on a dark evening. Her dad is in a bit of a state, and she spends the next couple of hours trying to sort things out. Jack tells her a young girl has been to see them, and that’s what the story is about.”
Living on a crumbling farm in Wales, Jack lost his son Michael in a tragic accident at sea many years ago, and the young woman who turns up on their farm claims to be Michael’s daughter. But how can this be, seeing as he died before she was born?
“It was a joy to write,” Kathy said, who has written two other books, titled The Luck and Scrap.
Drawing on her own experiences was an emotional journey for Kathy.
“I don’t plot ahead. I know where I started and know where I'm going, but getting there is a loose thing. It was an emotional thing to look after my own dad, and I think I managed to get that feeling of being a responsible person, the weight of that responsibility, into the book.”
This marks Kathy’s debut with a Big Five publisher, one of the world’s five major publishing houses. The book will also be translated into German and released as an audiobook.
“It’s a different experience,” Kathy said, who first published with Honno, a Welsh women's press, based in Aberystwyth.
“I loved being with Honno. It was a big decision, but it was the only choice to take this book as far as it could go.”
The book launch is on Friday, May 9 at Victoria Hall in Llanwrtyd at 6pm.

Wells 36) drew with Gloucestershire 589 for 8 dec (Price 253*
Resolute batting by Lancashire's Luke Wells and Tom Hartley frustrated Gloucestershire's bowlers and helped ensure that the Rothesay County Championship match at Emirates Old Trafford ended in a draw.
The visitors declared on their overnight score of 589 for eight, giving them a lead of 139, and when they reduced the home side to 160 for six half an hour before tea, they looked well placed to beat Lancashire for the first time since 2015.
But Wells and Hartley shared an seventh-wicket partnership of 69 in 28 overs either side of tea and the game ended at 5.53pm when Lancashire were 255 for eight and had a lead of 116 with only eight overs left in the match.
Hartley was caught by James Bracey off Ajeet Singh Dale for 37 but that wicket fell just before players shook hands with Tom Bailey on nine not out and Saqib Mahmood unbeaten on nought. For Gloucestershire, Tom Price ended the day with three for 52 and Graeme van Buuren took three for 36.
Gloucestershire take 13 points from the game to Lancashire's 12 but that hardly reflects the difference in the quality of the cricket played by the sides, particularly on the last two days of the game.
Having declared this morning with a lead of 139, Gloucestershire were rewarded for their enterprise when they dismissed both Lancashire openers inside the first dozen overs of their side's second innings.
George Bell departed for 28 when his waft outside the off stump to a ball from Tom Price only edged a catch to Cameron Bancroft, the only slip. Two balls later, Keaton Jennings joined his opening partner in the pavilion when he was beaten by Singh Dale's nip off the pitch and Bancroft took his second catch when fielding at a conventional second slip.
That left Lancashire on 50 for two, still 89 runs in arrears, and things got worse for the home side 15 minutes before luncheon when a flighted ball from Graeme van Buuren tempted Marcus Harris out of his crease and Bracey completed the stumping.
Lancashire were 89 for three when Harris departed for 24 but Josh Bohannon and Matty Hurst cleared Lancashire deficit and had built a mere four-run lead before both were dismissed by Tom Price and the game was tossed into the hazard once more.
Hurst was the first to go when having made 33 in 72 minutes, he inside-edged a ball onto his leg stump; four overs later Bohannon pushed a little tentatively at a delivery that seemed to bounce more than he was expecting and was caught at slip by Bancroft for 30.
Lancashire's lead was only 13 when Bohannon was dismissed and it had been increased to only 21 when George Balderson was caught behind by Bracey off van Buuren for two.
But Wells and Hartley took their side to tea on 178 for six and the eighth-wicket pair then inched Lancashire to safety on the resumption, extending their partnership to 69 before Wells was caught behind off van Buuren for 36.
The result means that all three Championship games at Old Trafford this season have been drawn with the visiting team only batting once on each occasion.

Nahki Wells will make another run on the Premier League as Bristol City secured a precious spot in the Sky Bet Championship play-offs on Saturday
Bristol City went into their final match of the regular season
knowing that victory would guarantee them a play-off place
But the unpredictability of football was again evident as they could draw only 2-2 with City’s players waiting on the pitch long after the final whistle as matches involving other play-off contenders were still being played
The nerves were ended only by City supporters
glued to their mobile devices in the stands at Ashton Gate
roaring with delight when they discovered the results of other matches had gone their way
That sparked celebratory scenes in the middle of the pitch as Wells and his team-mates were mobbed by ecstatic fans
That mood was in stark contrast to the atmosphere in the ground an hour into the match with City set to crash out of the play-off picture after going two goals down
with Preston scoring through Emil Riis Jakobsen and Milutin Osmajic in the 28th and 60th minutes respectively
who played a major role in reviving City’s chances
providing the assist for Ryan McCrorie to head in at the back post in the 69th minute
McCrorie scored his second goal of the game to pull the scores level at 2-2
City could not find another goal to guarantee themselves a play-off berth and were forced to wait for confirmation that Millwall and Blackburn Rovers
who both could have leapfrogged City with wins
That left City finishing the season in sixth position and they now face a two-leg play-off semi-final against Sheffield United
with the first leg at Ashton Gate on Thursday at 4pm Bermuda time
The return match takes place at Bramall Lane on May 12
who suffered a personal tragedy during the course of the season with the death of his baby son
said in his post-match interview that he had run the gamut of emotions during the match
“I guess I went through every emotion imaginable over the 90 minutes and those that followed the final whistle when we had to await the finish of games elsewhere,” he said
“At different times there was frustration and anger with how we were playing
But it was worth all of that to hear the cheer that rang out when our place in the play-offs was confirmed
The lap of honour was so emotional for me in view of the difficult year it has been personally and I was close to tears three or four times
“Celebrating with my family was very special
They and the players and staff have helped me through some tough times
I am just looking forward to relaxing with a couple of beers.”
Manning was also quick to praise the players for their resolve and jumped straight back to work on Sunday morning to prepare for the play-offs
“All season the players have shown the ability to bounce back quickly from setbacks and they did so again today,” he said
“The culture we have built is one of sticking together and becoming stronger through difficulties
I am not giving a thought to facing Sheffield United for the moment
but of course we have been professional enough to prepare for all eventualities based on today’s results.”

Farm inspectors are finding a lot of unlicensed abstraction taking place in Devon and Cornwall during routine farm inspections
Many farms rely on their own private water supply from springs
How much water is being taken is unmonitored – meaning farmers could be unknowingly breaching the allowed limit for abstraction without a licence
agriculture team leader for the Environment Agency in Devon and Cornwall
All landowners should know how much water they are abstracting and ensure they have the relevant licence if needed
Abstracting water without the necessary licence or in breach of your licence conditions is an offence and could lead to enforcement action
Taking 20,000 litres of water a day is enough to wash over 100 cars
Taking more water than you are permitted could impact on other users and damage the environment
where and when water is abstracted through our licensing system
Anyone taking 20 m3 of water per day or over is required to have an abstraction licence
Environment Agency farm inspectors have issued 70 actions to farmers over the past 2 years to install a meter to monitor how much water is being taken and apply for a licence where it is clear one is needed
Abstraction licences have conditions on them to ensure the environment and the rights of other abstractors are protected
Our powers and duties enable us to regulate the use of water under existing licences and to decide whether to grant new ones
Where abstraction is damaging the environment
we also have the power to amend or revoke existing licences
Climate change and population growth means there will be less available water with a greater demand for it
the amount of water available could be down by 10-15%
with some rivers seeing 50-80% less water during the summer months
We all need to protect the environment by reducing the amount of water we use and ensuring greater efficiency in its use and re-use
Guidance on whether you need a licence to abstract water is available on GOV.UK
Grant funding is available for rainwater storage tanks. See RP16: Rainwater goods, RP17: Storage tanks underground, RP18: Above ground tanks
You do not need an abstraction licence to use water that only consists of harvested rainwater. See our regulatory position on rainwater harvesting.

Breaking crime updates and news from the courts
A well-known figure in Tunbridge Wells who was a long-term fundraiser
the deputy town crier and who held variety performances in the town
has been jailed for 16 years for child rape
Brian Bissell, 82, who was a member of many groups in the town over the years, has been jailed for a series of offences committed more than 50 years ago. Bissell repeatedly abused a girl from when she was only 10 years old, during the 1960s and 1970s, said Kent Police
Bissell sometimes targeted the victim in her own home
by getting in and out through her bedroom window
Further abuse was carried out at a flat where he lived in Ravenswood Avenue
He once also raped the child after taking her to an isolated location in Brokes Wood
A complex and lengthy investigation into offences started in 2018, and after Bissell denied any wrongdoing, an initial trial was held at Maidstone Crown Court in 2023
and Bissell was found not guilty of offences against a further four alleged victims of abuse
A retrial was ordered for offences relating to the allegations concerning one victim where verdicts had not been reached
This took place at Maidstone Crown Court during March 2025 and led to Bissell being convicted of five counts of rape
Tunbridge Wells was sentenced to 16 years’ imprisonment
He was also made the subject of an extended licence period of a year
Bissell was very much a self-promoter of his involvement in good causes
He was always seen out and about in the town and had been involved
He twice abseiled down buildings for charity
dressed as Spiderman in 2019 and then as Batman
down the front of Wetherspoon's Opera House
On two occasions he held a variety performance on stages in the town
where he was on the stage most of the performances
Detective Constable Hannah Crittenden said: "Bissell abused the trust of both his young victim and her parents in the worst possible way
He quickly exerted control over a vulnerable child to satisfy his abhorrent desires
making her feel the abuse was normal and ensuring her compliance so she was too terrified to tell anyone
His actions have had a lasting and profound impact upon many aspects of the victim’s life
who has continued to live in fear of his presence until he was remanded in custody
"Bissell has clearly demonstrated the threat he poses to children
having committed appalling and repeated offences over many years
I do hope this sentence will at least provide some comfort and reassurance to all those who have been connected to our investigations
"It is never too late to report any sexual offence and I commend the bravery of any victim that does so
We have a team of specialist officers who work relentlessly to ensure that offenders like Bissell do not evade justice
just because a crime may have happened a long time ago
We will always treat any information with the upmost confidence and sensitivity."

Plans to work on a tree in the Llandrindod Wells Conservation Area have been recommended for approval by the town council
Llandrindod Wells has applied for permission to work on a tree that is covered by a tree preservation order
The town council considered the application to reduce the height of the tree and to remove any dead
Councillor Chris Owen (Blue) said: “It appears the work has been requested by the Trunk Road Agency on health and safety grounds so they have got to get this work done.”
He proposed no objection to the plans and other members agreed not to raise any objections
Powys County Council will make the final decision on the plan
A team of Norfolk Fire & Rescue Service (NFRS) staff are aiming to walk the length of Norfolk in under 24 hours to raise money for charity
The Hydrant Hike is a challenge being undertaken by all ten members of the service's Hydrant Team
who will walk the 60-mile journey from Diss in South Norfolk to Wells-next-the-Sea on the north Norfolk coast
Their endeavour is all to raise money for the Fire Fighters Charity
a national organisation that provides clinical care and wellbeing support to members of the UK's fire services and their families
The hike will be taking place on the weekend of Saturday 17 - Sunday 18 May
with the team setting off from Diss (outside the Cappadocia Restaurant on the B1077) at 12 noon on Saturday
They'll be walking through the night on the route
with the final leg of their journey finishing at Wells RNLI Lifeboat Station
The Hydrant team are a dedicated team of technicians and support staff responsible for inspecting and maintaining over 22,000 hydrants across Norfolk
ensuring they are operational for crews to provide them with a reliable water supply whenever fires occur
is one of the staff members taking part in the hike
He said: "Any Norfolk resident will tell you that we're lucky to live in such a scenic county
So we thought why not set ourselves the challenge of walking along it
"The distance we'll be walking will be more than two marathons
so it's going to be a real test on all of our bodies
But it'll be huge motivation to know that we're doing it for the Fire Fighters Charity
who do fantastic work for firefighters and their families and are a cause close to all of our hearts."
said: "The Hydrant Team have done some tremendous work in raising funds for the Fire Fighters Charity for this gruelling challenge
and I know the whole service will be behind them when they set off from Diss next month."
The group will be supported by operational fire crews joining them along different sections of the walk
The final mile of the journey will be along the Beach Bank at Wells-next-the-Sea
where the hikers will be joined by members of RNLI Wells taking part in their annual Mayday Mile family event
Wells RNLI Volunteer Lifeboat Operations Manager
said: "We're really looking forward to teaming up with Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service for this special Mayday Mile event
It's a fantastic opportunity to bring our communities together and celebrate the dedication of our lifesaving teams.
"Events like this highlight the strength of collaboration between emergency services
and we're proud to walk alongside Norfolk's firefighters as they complete the final stretch of their incredible Hydrant Hike
We hope this joint effort inspires plenty of support and helps raise vital funds for both our services."

Nahki Wells has 10 goals to his name for Bristol City this season
Nahki Wells believes everyone at Bristol City is united and "stepping up" and that has played a big role in the Robins' rise into the Championship play-off places
Wells scored City's opening goal as they beat West Brom 2-1 on Tuesday night to move up to fifth in the table with five games to go
The Bermuda striker - who now has 10 goals this campaign - said the success is down to the whole squad pulling together
We're not solely relying on one individual to get the goals or make a huge difference," Wells told BBC Radio Bristol
"Every week there's consistent performance but in the big moments everyone's stepping up and that's what a team really is and that's what we are as a team
just a team that's hungry to try and grow and the manager's done well to keep us humble and bring this squad of players and group together to perform at this high level."
Manning hopes Wells will extend Bristol City stay
Robins have to 'control their heads' - Manning
Roberts' West Brom goal 'most important of career'
Wells said the celebrations in the changing room at Ashton Gate following the win over the Baggies - which followed Saturday's victory against another play-off rival Watford - was up there with the "best moments" during his time at the club
The 34-year-old is the most senior player on the squad and is out of contract this summer although talks have taken place about extending his deal
Wells joined the club in 2020 from Burnley and Liam Manning is the fourth manager he has played under during that time
He said Manning's influence in helping the players shut out external pressure and focus on the game at hand has been crucial as the team's progression has accelerated
"The continuity in the group has been growing
We're becoming tighter and tighter as time goes on and that same connection with the fans and everyone affiliated with the football club is all coming together nicely at a good time," Wells added
"I think the manager's done well to try to block out the external noise and try to find a strategy to be as present as we can to put a small block of a run together and focus on that."
A top-six finish would mark a huge step forward for City
who last finished in the play-off places in 2007-08 when they were beaten in the Wembley final by Hull City and last were in contention for the play-offs at this stage of a season when they finished eighth in 2019
"We know exactly where we're at and what's the cherry at the end of it," Wells said
"It's no certainty that we'll be in those play-off positions come 90 minutes at the end of the Preston game but we're doing what it takes to give ourselves the best chance to get there."

Saturday’s UFC Fight Night main card at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines
IA followed a similar flow to the preliminary card slate
gradually building to a crescendo in the final series of bouts to arrive in the Octagon
Mason Jones and Jeremy Stephens opened the action with two rounds of brawling before Jones shifted to wrestling to salt away a win in his return to the UFC
before bantamweights Serhiy Sidey and Montel Jackson earned unanimous decision victories of their own in solid efforts against Cameron Smotherman and Daniel Marcos
veteran welterweight Daniel Rodriguez collected a thunderous third-round stoppage win over Santiago Ponzinibbio to secure his second straight victory
with Reinier de Ridder upping the ante in the co-main event by finishing Bo Nickal early in the second
bouncing him from the ranks of the unbeaten in the process while collecting his third straight UFC finish

Cory Sandhagen earned a statement win over Deiveson Figueiredo
dominating the action throughout before the Brazilian suffered a knee injury while locked in a grappling entanglement with the talented American
It was an eventful night inside the Octagon with some emphatic efforts
and you can get everything you need to know about Saturday’s main card matchups below
Cory Sandhagen closed out the UFC’s return to Iowa with a tremendous performance against Deiveson Figueiredo
dominating the action before the Brazilian suffered a knee injury in the midst of a scramble late in the second round
Sandhagen looked more aggressive and dialled in
taking the fight to the former flyweight champion
landing with force and ruthless intent as Figueiredo hunted for leg locks throughout the first
with the Colorado native aiming to do damage at every turn
with Figueiredo suffering a knee injury while the two men were scrambling through a 50/50 position
This was an outstanding showing from Sandhagen
who is a mainstay in the Top 5 and looked better than he has in some time in this one
He called for a date with the winner of the upcoming bantamweight title fight
as well as volunteering to be the backup for that fight
and could very well get one or both of those wishes granted after a performance like this one to close out the night in Des Moines

Reinier de Ridder made a statement in Des Moines, finishing Bo Nickal early in the second round to announce himself as a serious threat in the middleweight division
The Dutchman used a steady diet of shots in the midsection to chip away at the gas tank of the unbeaten prospect
where the two spent half the frame on the canvas
But de Ridder came out aggressively to start the second
continuing to fire off knees and punches to the body
de Ridder folded him over with one more stepping knee to the liver
This was a massive victory for the veteran from the Netherlands
who is now 3-0 since arriving in the UFC and just stopped one of the best prospects in the sport
De Ridder has looked better in each of his three appearances
and should get a massive opportunity next time out after handing Nickal the first loss of his career
Daniel Rodriguez secured a massive third-round stoppage win over fellow veteran Santiago Ponzinibbio to pick up his second consecutive victory and start his 2025 campaign with a statement effort
“D-Rod” had Ponzinibbio on shaky legs in the first
capitalizing on a stumble that opened the door for him to attack and clearly win the opening frame
mixing in takedown attempts with better offensive effectiveness
Rodriguez connected with a three-punch combination that put Ponzinibbio on the deck
This was the first stoppage win for Rodriguez in nearly four years
and a great follow-up performance to his win over Alex Morono last year
The 38-year-old veteran is an all-action fixture in the welterweight ranks
and should land another solid assignment next time out after this weekend’s stoppage win
Montel Jackson continued his winning ways, collecting his sixth straight victory while bouncing Daniel Marcos from the ranks of the unbeaten in a low-output
There wasn’t a ton of offence on either side over the first two rounds
with Jackson seemingly having a little more success in the opening frame before Marcos was slightly more active and effective in the second
Jackson came out throwing with a greater sense of urgency to start the third
landing a smattering of shots before the Peruvian looked to clinch and grapple
When the scorecards were collected and totalled
it was Jackson that came out on the happy side of the verdict
While not the highlight reel finishes that he recorded in his two previous outings
“Quik” did enough to keep things moving in the right direction and hand Marcos the first loss of his professional career
Serhiy Sidey picked up his second consecutive victory inside the Octagon on Saturday, delivering a well-rounded and professional performance against a game Cameron Smotherman
The Ukranian-born Canadian was the more active and effective of the two throughout
doing well to offer more value and more variety
while mixing in takedowns and initiating clinch situations
Smotherman came out more aggressively in the third
but the Dana White’s Contender Series graduate did well to weather the initial rush
All three judges scored the fight in favor of the DWCS alum
Ontario native continued to show a diverse approach and a sound understanding of what is needed to win at this level
allowing him to kick off the year with a quality victory and maintain his momentum as we head into the summer
Mason Jones and Jeremy Stephens teamed up for the back-and-forth slugfest most anticipated as soon as this fight was announced to kick off the main card as both men made their returns to the Octagon
Jones was the aggressor and the more effective of the two early
doing well to mix up his attacks and keep Stephens from landing too much of real consequence
Stephens had more success in the second as the two went back-and-forth before Jones turned to his grappling to neutralize Stephens’ striking and dominate the final round
This was a good return to the win column in the UFC for Jones
who went 1-2 with one no contest in his first run before an excellent four-fight stint in Cage Warriors
He’s won five straight overall and showed good awareness in the third to ensure he secured the victory after happily trading blows with Stephens through the opening 10 minutes

Former Bristol Bears hooker and team manager Nick Fenton-Wells has been announced as the latest ambassador for the Bristol Bears Community Foundation
The 38-year-old spent three seasons at Bears before being appointed as team manager for the 2019/20 campaign after retiring following an eight-year professional career
Fenton-Wells was honoured for his extraordinary off-field contribution when he was named Gallagher Community Player of the Season in 2019
Fenton-Wells has now become the Foundation’s second ambassador
Fenton-Wells’ role will support the advocacy and profile of the charity’s work in the community
“I’m very proud to become an ambassador for the Bristol Bears Community Foundation,” said Fenton-Wells
“It’s a huge honour to be able to support the work of the Foundation and do everything we can to get this brilliant charity out to the public
he set a very clear vision with Steve Lansdown to inspire our community through rugby success and it’s just a brilliant marriage between the Community Foundation and Bristol Bears and what we’re trying to achieve
“I want to get people understanding how incredible the work is that we do across the Bristol community
It’s one thing seeing it advertised but when you get to see and feel the difference these programmes are making that’s when it really sinks in how much of an impact the Community Foundation are having throughout the city of Bristol.”
Fenton-Wells was speaking at a Foundation session at Claremont School where he helped deliver a Spectrum Sports session to a group of children with complex needs
Spectrum Sports is a tailored programme of PE & Sport delivery

“I’ve been completely blown away by today’s session and just how much it’s inspired me to get involved in the work that the Foundation do,” Fenton-Wells added
“My goal is to get more people to understand through interactions as opposed to them just saying they sponsor the Community Foundation or do this for the Foundation
I prefer to see people come in and see the real difference that the charity is making.”
Fenton-Wells is also set to run the Paris Marathon to raise funds for the Foundation alongside CEO Jamie Skinner as part of the Bristol Sport Group community foundation’s Event Series. You can support their efforts in the Paris Marathon by donating here

British No.1 Jack Draper is the new BNP Paribas Open Indian Wells champion after producing a masterclass performance to beat 12th seed Holger Rune in straight sets
In his first ATP Masters 1000 finals, Draper clinched the biggest title of his career with a commanding 6-2
He’s only the second Briton to win the men’s singles at Indian Wells after Cam Norrie also clinched the biggest prize in his career so far back in 2021
“It’s incredible,” Draper told Sky Sports after the match
I put in a lot of work over time and I’m so grateful and happy to be out here
All the work I’ve done over the years
it feels like it’s coming together on the big stage
“I came out and approached the game well
I knew Holger would come out playing some really good tennis so I had to be aggressive and play to win from the first ball
I didn’t allow him to play and I dictated the match really well
In winning the third ATP title of his career – Draper is set to break into the top 10 tomorrow with a new career-high ranking at world No.7
Draper is the fifth British player to reach the ATP top 10 and to win an ATP Masters 1000 title following on from Greg Rusedski, Tim Henman, Andy Murray and Norrie
“I feel like I deserve it to be honest (reaching the top 10),” Draper said
“The amount of adversity I’ve been through
the amount of time that the people around me have put into me
It’s an emotional feeling to know what you’ve gone through and put in and now to be able to say that I’m going to be seven in the world tomorrow – I can’t tell you how much that means to me.”
Draper oozed confidence right from the word go in his ATP Masters 1000 final debut
He soaked up the pressure on Rune’s opening service game
forcing the Dane into making four errors for quick early break
Rune could only look on in disbelief as Draper moved a double break and 3-0 in front – winding up his big lefty forehand to great effect and looking more and more comfortable on each passing game
The 12th seed finally managed to get himself on the board with a couple of holds but was unable to put Draper’s serve under any threat during the first set
Draper hit seven aces and lost just four points on serve to take a one set lead after 30 minutes
The stress showed for Rune at the start of the second set
The young Dane hit a double fault on the first point of the set before surrendering his third break of serve to the British No.1
Rune – who knocked out Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas in previous rounds – had to try and make things happen
but Draper was equal to everything the former Paris Masters champion threw at him
The calls from Draper’s coaching box were for the Brit to target the Rune forehand and it worked to great effect
Rune seemed to lose all confidence in his forehand and a series of errors at 4-2 was the final nail in the coffin - giving Draper the break needed to go on and finish the match in style
The 2024 US Open semi-finalist leaves the Californian desert having dropped one set in six matches and with wins over two top five players as well as four of the top 12 seeds
Draper is now one of just four players born after the year 2000 to have won an ATP Masters 1000 title – alongside Carlos Alcaraz
The Briton will now move on to play the second of successive ATP Masters events at the Miami Open. Check out our Miami Open preview
Draper is also scheduled to return to the HSBC Championships at The Queen's Club this summer alongside Alcaraz

WELLS CATHEDRAL is fund-raising for a £7-million restoration project: Vicars’ Close (News, 9 August 2024)
it is the oldest medieval street in Europe still inhabited for its original purpose
Restoration of the Close’s 14th-century terraced houses is scheduled for completion in spring 2027
Recent grants and donations leave nearly £800,000 to be raised
The construction of Vicars’ Close began in 1348
with homes near the cathedral and away from the temptations of town
A charter for the vicars choral was also granted in 1348
the task of vicars choral was to sing the liturgy on behalf of canons who were away from the cathedral
Wells’s adult choristers are still called the vicars choral rather than lay clerks
the two sides of Vicars’ Close mirror each other
with silver-pink stone walls and tall central chimneys
Vicar’s Close still houses choristers and vergers — housing comes with their stipend — and there is also a Wells Cathedral School boarding house

and will be one of the areas newly opened to the public
when the restoration project is complete in about 26 months’ time

the house underlines the difficulties of medieval living
Stone floors and absence of central heating make the originally one-up- one-down house icily cold

Indicating gaps in stonework and leaking gutters
Ms Johnson says that some of the biggest headaches come from restorative work from the 1970s and ’80s
Cement render used to repair cracks has trapped moisture in the stonework
send rainwater running down exterior walls
A full restoration was costed at £10 million; so Ms Johnson says that the current project is tackling the critical building work and stopping deterioration
“Water ingress is the biggest problem.” Because £4.4 million of the project’s funding comes from the National Lottery Heritage Fund
it provides no money for interiors; so lower-level works will be done by the in-house team
Vicars’ Close has no visitor interpretation
