Over 30,000 tickets have already been sold for the Ashes opener between England and Australia at Wembley later this year
The much-anticipated three-Test series will begin in the capital in late-October
with a bumper crowd hopefully expected to kick off the first Ashes campaign in over 20 years
The second Test at Everton’s new stadium and the final match at AMT Headingley have already sold out
meaning that supporters only have Wembley remaining as a viable option should they wish to purchase tickets
with nearly six months still remaining until the series begins
there have been plenty of tickets already sold – with that figure for Wembley now over 30,000
đïžThere have been more than 30,000 tickets sold for the England v Australia opening test match at Wembley in October
â The Tryline đ (@TrylineUK) May 2, 2025
that is a long way short of anything like a healthy crowd inside the national stadium
But with months left to go until the series begins – and Wembley the only option for those who have already missed out on the other two Tests – it points towards a major crowd in London
RL Commercial CEO Rhodri Jones had admitted that he was hopeful of beating the figure set in the 2013 Rugby League World Cup semi-final double-header at Wembley
There is still a lot of work to be done to surpass that total
but hopes are high that with considerable backing and plenty of interest in the series given how long it has been since the last Ashes showdown
there could be well in excess of that total watching for the series opener

There’s been a lot of chatter over the last few days about the number of empty seats at Wembley Stadium for last weekend’s FA Cup semi-final between Nottingham Forest and Manchester City
Footage clearly showed huge swathes of seating that hadn’t been filled
some sections capable of taking thousands of fans
And this led to a lot of people taking the micky out of City for not being able to sell out their allocation – cue the ‘you’re only a small club’ selection of insults
I’m rarely on City’s side on any topic
Their club has played at Wembley goodness knows how many times over the past decade – this was their seventh consecutive FA Cup semi-final alone – and trekking down to London is not like popping to the corner shop
there is a limit to the amount of disposable income they can spend following their team
Going to Wembley costs hundreds for the ticket
refreshments and various other bits and pieces
For a family of four to make the outing you are looking at upwards of a £1,000 for the day
For the other three semi-finalists this was more of a unique occasion
so them selling most of their allocations was not surprising
But when it comes to City they are almost victims of their own success with ‘Wembley fatigue’ setting in
One thing these highly visible rows of emptiness has done
is provoke a bit more debate about whether or not the semi-finals should be held at Wembley in the first place
I have long said that playing the semis at Wembley devalues the competition and the venue in equal measure
sacred pitch that only the best get to play on
The semi-finals should be on neutral ground
City and Forest could easily have played at Old Trafford
Yes a few less people would be able to watch but at least those that did go wouldn’t need to re-mortgage their house to get there
Given the geographical locations of the other two teams in the last four
But that could easily have been played at Tottenham Hotpur or Arsenal
Playing semis at Wembley is wrong on so many levels – financially
it will always remain the dilution of the unique Wembley magic that makes this situation truly irritating
A few decades ago you knew as a fan that you would only get to see your team at Wembley if they made it to a major final
a holy grail-like place; a stadium reserved for the elite that you longed to be part of
The decision to play both semis at Wembley was taken on the official basis that it would allow more fans to see the games
everyone knows the real reason was the huge financial hole the FA was facing after going so inexplicably over-budget on building the place
The hole has long been filled but the idiotic policy remains in place
If Sir Jim Ratcliffe finds some unexpected money down the back of the sofa
and the new Manchester United stadium gets built
There would be no way on earth they could justify dragging 100,000 fans down from the north for a Liverpool vs Leeds final (random example) when there is a bigger
newer and potentially nicer stadium on the fans’ doorstep
English and Scottish football is set to ban transgender women from taking part in competitive women’s football from next season
The move comes in the wake of the recent court ruling in the UK that legally defined a ‘woman’ as someone who was born biologically female
Scotland were the first to announce the ban (although it is mostly symbolic as there are no transgender players registered in Scottish women’s football) and they were quickly followed by the English FA
In the case of the latter this is going to be a trickier rule to implement as there are currently 20 transgender players playing women’s or girls’ football in England
A tiny fraction of the hundreds of thousands who play
but it will be extremely sad having to tell those people they can no longer play their chosen sport
I am trying to be careful not to reopen the can of worms considering the abuse I got last time I touched on this topic
And I am not going to deny that this latest reversal of the rules feels harsh on trans women
But the integrity and fairness of the sporting competition needs to be front and centre in any thinking on this subject
as does the safety of the biological women and girls who play the game
I genuinely wish there was a course of action that didn’t involve people being left out of sport
a situation where biologically female footballers come first is the only sensible conclusion
And now for a little quirky story to finish off the week
Wrexham have continued their incredible – but equally annoying – rise through the divisions
But let’s leave my controversial opinion aside this week and focus on one of their players in particular – Jay Rodriguez
The one-time England striker started this season at Burnley where he played 20 games and scored two goals
he was dazzled by the Hollywood bling and dropped down a division to join the Welsh club
playing 17 times as they finished runners-up to Birmingham
With both those clubs finishing in the top two of their respective divisions
very exclusive club of players who will receive two promotion medals in the same season
It almost never happens but Football League rules say that you are entitled to a medal if you play in more than 25 per cent of a team’s matches during a promotion season
I bet Ryan Reynolds is already wondering if there is enough mileage in the Rodriguez story for a spin-off TV series..

In what looks to be a landmark fight in contemporary heavyweight boxing, Usyk, the current WBC, WBO, and WBA heavyweight champion, will defend his combined championships against IBF champion Dubois. Due to the historic setting, the high stakes, and the tremendous skill both boxers bring to the ring, the battle has been hailed as one of the most important fights in decades.
Usyk has remained unbeaten and established himself as one of the most technically proficient heavyweights of this generation thanks to his deft southpaw movement and exceptional ring IQ.
On the other hand, Dubois, who has rebuilt his career after losing to Joe Joyce and is currently on the verge of stardom, adds youth, strength, and tenacity.
Fans are looking forward to the fight, but many are already focused on what will happen next. It is now official that the victor of the Usyk vs Dubois fight will have to defend the undisputed title against Filip Hrgović, the IBF mandatory challenger.
Under IBF rules, the Croatian heavyweight has steadily advanced through the rankings and kept his place as the next contender for the belt. The already high-stakes fight becomes much more intriguing in light of this revelation.
Predicted lineups are available for the match a few days in advance while the actual lineup will be available about an hour ahead of the match

Goals from Jack Barham and Tyler Frost were enough to give the Shots the three points in front of a crowd of 3,089 at the EBB Stadium ahead of Sundayâs trip to Wembley Stadium for the FA Trophy final.
The hosts started the game on the front foot and nearly fashioned a good chance in the fifth minute, but Josh Barrettâs dink into the box was just over the head of Barham.
The Shots then produced a free-flowing move two minutes later. Barrettâs flick found James Henry, who played a neat through ball to Frost on the left wing. Frost looked to pick out Barham in the middle of the box, but his cutback was cut out by the recovering Jacob Wannell.
The Glovers created their first chance of the afternoon in the 17th minute when Lewis Twamley played a one-two with Sonny-Lo Everton before curling his right-foot shot just wide of the far left-hand post.
The visitors should have taken the lead a minute later when Harry Kiteâs excellent through ball picked out Ciaran McGuckin, who put his first-time finish wide of the far post when he only had Shots keeper Marcus Dewhurst to beat.
McGuckin had another good chance on 19 minutes when he got on the end of a ball over the top and knocked the ball past the advancing Dewhurst, but McGuckin was forced wide and could only fire his effort into the side netting from a tight angle.
The Shots nearly took the lead in bizarre circumstances in the 22nd minute when Barham caught Wannell in possession and the ball flew towards the net, but Glovers keeper Aidan Stone managed to claw the ball away for a corner just before it crossed the line.
The resulting corner picked out Luca Woodhouse, who put his header wide of the right-hand post.
The Shots were forced into an early change on 37 minutes when Cameron Hargreaves limped off and was replaced by Dejan Tetek.
The hosts took the lead two minutes later when Barham got on the end of Dan Ellisonâs ball down the left-hand channel and spun his marker before racing through on goal and firing his shot into the far right-hand corner of the net. Stone got two strong hands to Barhamâs effort, but the shot had too much power for the Yeovil keeper.
The Shots nearly doubled their advantage when a quick short corner was played to Frost, who picked out Henry in a promising position in the box, but Henry was unable to make a clean contact with the ball when well placed.
The Glovers had a good chance to get back on level terms in first-half stoppage time when Charlie Cooperâs cross found Dominic Bernard in the box, but Bernard put his free header over the bar.
The hosts were quick out of the traps at the start of the second half and doubled their advantage in the 49th minute. Tetek drove forward from midfield, and although his intended pass was cut out the ball broke kindly for Frost, who drilled his first-time finish past Stone and into the back of the net.
The Shots could have scored a third on 55 minutes when they won a free kick just outside the box, but Barrett curled his effort just over the bar.
The Glovers got themselves back in the game five minutes later when Frankie Terryâs good ball in from the left was flicked in by Bernard from close range.
Shots boss Tommy Widdrington made his second change of the afternoon in the 66th minute, with Kwame Thomas replacing Henry.
Widdrington made another change three minutes later, with Maxwell Mullins replacing Barham.
Barrett then nearly scored a spectacular goal for the Shots on 71 minutes when his cheeky chip drifted just wide of the far left-hand post.
Yeovil nearly got themselves back on level terms in the 77th minute when Finn Cousin-Dawson drove forward and fired his shot from the just outside the box just over the bar.
Widdrington made his fourth change of the afternoon a minute later, with Kai Corbett replacing Barrett.
The Shots made their final change on 86 minutes, when Ollie Bray replaced the booked Theo Widdrington.
The hosts nearly went 3-1 up in stoppage time when Frost drove forward, but his shot from the edge of the box went wide of the left-hand post.
The Glovers then almost equalised in the sixth minute of stoppage time when Brett McGavinâs free kick was superbly parried away by Dewhurst.
The Shots saw out the last few seconds to sign off their league campaign with a welcome three points and finish in 16th place in the National League.
Next up for the Shots is the clubâs first-ever trip to Wembley Stadium to face National League North outfit Spennymoor Town in the FA Trophy final on Sunday, May 11 (4.15pm kick-off).

the Eagles have managed to return on plenty of occasions
Palace have walked down Wembley Way 11 times to date
with the 2024/25 FA Cup semi-final against Aston Villa set to be our 12th visit to the iconic venue
Considering the stadium was demolished and rebuilt between 2001 and 2007
Palace have actually made it something of a regular pilgrimage
we take a trip down memory lane and revisit the previous Wembley trips
To mark the centenary of the foundation of the Football League in 1888
This included the Football League Centenary Tournament - also given a catchy alias of the Mercantile Credit Football Festival
Initially set up as a six-a-side competition
featuring 16 teams from the top four divisions
Palace were defeated in the first round, losing out to Sheffield Wednesday after a - slightly inevitable - penalty shootout. You can read more about our first visit here.
For many Palace fans inside the old stadium that day
this was their first ever visit to the old Wembley
the FA Cup final against Manchester United might not have gone our way
few match-ups will ever surpass the initial tie
The game remains etched in Crystal Palace history. Goals from Gary OâReilly and two from Ian Wright saw the Eagles draw 3-3, after a pulsating 120 minutes - but in truth that description barely scratches the surface on a remarkable final.
Five days later Palace were back at the home of football for a rematch with United
with a fatigued Palace side perhaps finding it one game too far
as Lee Martinâs second-half finish proved to be the only goal of the game
Silverware would arrive on Palace's fourth visit to the Twin Towers
after triumphing in the Full Members' Cup final
with a 4-1 win against Everton after extra-time
The tournament aimed to provide an extra competition for clubs in the top two divisions
due to the ongoing European ban for English clubs
who had suffered from the ban after winning the league in 1987
But they were no match for an in-form Palace team who also finished third that season
Geoff Thomas gave Palace the lead and although Everton were able to force extra-time
two from Ian Wright and one from John Salako completed the perfect day
Palace's first ever one-off play-off final at Wembley came in 1996
After finishing third in the regular table
before seeing off Charlton Athletic in the semi-finals
Leicester City were all that stood between Palace and a return to the Premier League
Steve Claridge hit a stunning half-volley to break Palace hearts
the Eagles would be back down Wembley Way only a year later for redemption..
Having lost out in dramatic fashion in 1996
the '97 final was to end very differently for Steve Coppell's team
The match itself was rather uneventful and cagey and also looked destined for extra-time until a moment of magic from David Hopkin in the 90th minute
the Scottish midfielder's winning goal remains one of the most iconic moments in the club's long and proud history
It was promotion in the best way possible - a last-gasp winner
With Wembley undergoing a complete rebuild at the start of the 21st century
Palace had to wait 16 years before our next visit
The 2003/04 Division One play-off win took place at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium and by the time the Eagles were back at the national stadium
the Arch had replaced the old Twin Towers as a major footballing landmark
with Watford our opponents in the Championship play-off final
Palace came into this game after defying the odds to beat Brighton & Hove Albion on their own turf in a dramatic semi-final
which followed a barren run of one win in 10 games as the season drew to a close
including great goalkeeping from Julian Speroni
just when it seemed penalties would be needed
semi-final hero Wilfried Zaha won a spot-kick just before the interval
Substitute - and former Watford forward - Kevin Phillips took on the responsibility and duly dispatched it into the roof of the net
as well as one of the most important goals in club history
Palace's most recent FA Cup final four victory
Yannick Bolasie got Palace off to a flying start
heading home Damien Delaneyâs flick-on in the sixth-minute
Watford pulled one back in the second-half through captain Troy Deeney
Pape Souaré whipped in a cross to find Connor Wickham - the Eagles' striker losing his marker and planting a header firmly in the back of the net to secure a 2-1 win and a place in the FA Cup final
Cue bedlam right across the Palace half of Wembley
One month later and Alan Pardew's side were back under the Arch for our second FA Cup final appearance
once again Manchester United would provide the opposition
And once again the Eagles would put up a real fight
Jason Puncheon slammed home a stunning effort following Joel Ward's pass in the 77th minute
That kickstarted a quickfire emotional roller-coaster
Juan Mata levelled just four minutes later to put United back in the contest
Jesse Lingard drove a stunning effort into the top corner of the Palace goal to hand United the trophy
We'll let you decide whether this - or the 1988 Football League Centenary Cup wins the award of 'oddest Wembley trip.'
Spurs played their home fixtures at Wembley
during the demolition of the old White Hart Lane and construction of the adjacent Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
Palace headed to Wembley with the unusual feel of being the away team
A largely below-par game was settled by one moment of quality - as Son Heung-min's curler on the hour mark won the points
It would prove something of a unique experience
Tottenham moved into their new surroundings with just four home games remaining of the following season
the first of which happened to be against Palace
in their first 'post-Wembley' home fixture
Our most recent visit to the Wembley Arch came three years ago
as a Palace side managed by Patrick Viera once again reached the last four of the FA Cup
With Everton impressively brushed aside in the quarter-final
hopes were high the Eagles could produce another Wembley performance for the ages
In the end Chelsea proved too strong on the day
the then-reigning European Champions going through after a hard-fought 2-0 win
Supporters can experience Wembley, and Palace's biggest game of this season, from the best seats in the house through one of our Premium Experiences â including our Pitch View package
which comes with a number of incredible benefits

A man who blagged his way into the VIP area of Wembley Stadium to watch the Champions League final with his young son could face jail
Steven Carruthers and his four-year-old son mingled with fashion model Naomi Campbell and heavyweight boxing champion Oleksandr Usyk when they watched the Champions League final from top-tier seats worth ÂŁ21,800 âat the lowestâ
The 34-year-old, from Hull in East Yorkshire, appeared at Willesden Magistratesâ Court on Tuesday after pleading guilty to one count of obtaining services dishonestly.
Rachna Gokani, prosecuting, told the court: âThe defendant involved his young son who was four years old at the time in order to assist his illegal entrance into the stadium.
âHe was wearing a suit for the specific purpose of looking like he was entitled to these services.â
Ms Gokani added Carruthers went on to âadvertise his offendingâ in a national newspaper.
She said: âHe went to the Daily Mail and a football-related publication, essentially boasting about gaining entry â something he said he had done previously.
Dubois trainer claims Usyk 'conned boxing' in low blow controversy

Sheku Bayoh inquiry chairman facing conduct hearing over meetings with family
âMr Carruthers was boasting precisely that he met Naomi Campbell and the heavyweight boxing champion Oleksandr Usyk and other celebrities.â
Quoting a probation officer who met Carruthers prior to the hearing, Ms Gokani added: âHe had no shame or remorse and was clearly proud of what he had accomplished.â
The court heard Carruthers and his son enjoyed an exclusive hospitality area which regular members of the public were not able to purchase.
Spanish giants Real Madrid defeated Borussia Dortmund 2-0 in the match played on June 1 2024.
Ms Gokani said: âThe most expensive hospitality package available on that day was ÂŁ10,900 per person.
âThe hospitality area which Mr Carruthers entered is on a hospitality package which basically exceeds that.
âItâs only available for certain VIPs, members of the public cannot purchase it.
âThe Daily Mail article and Mr Carruthers himself refer to a cost of about ÂŁ20,000 for tickets, so he is plainly aware of the levels we are dealing with.â
Ms Gokani said the offending and its subsequent âadvertisementâ in the Daily Mail posed security risks for Wembley Stadium, and prompted the Football Association to prosecute Carruthers.
Referring the 2020 Euro final mass disorder incident, when more than 2,000 people stormed their way into Wembley, she said: âThe devastating events of that day are why they (the FA) take offences such as this seriously.
âThere are real risks in terms of disorder, health and safety, and the status of the stadium.â
Carruthers, who represented himself in court, apologised after he was told the offence carried a maximum sentence of three years in jail.
He said: âIâm regretful of what I did, it really does worry me about jail, to be honest.
âI donât really want to ruin my kidsâ future.â
Lead magistrate Laura Mee told the defendant the case is to be transferred to crown court for sentence as the serious nature of the offence exceeds the magistratesâ sentencing powers.
Carruthers told the panel as he left the dock: âI think itâs excessive, Iâve not hurt anyone.â
He will be sentenced at Harrow Crown Court at a date yet to be fixed.

Fife Flyers were crowned the new kings of British ice hockey on May 5 1985 in front of then-record 7,300 fans at Wembley Arena
It was the biggest crowd to watch a game in Britain since the 1960s
The 9-4 win over Murrayfield Racers secured a first British Championship since 1978
It was the underdog tale no one saw coming
Club historian John Ross said the summer of 1984 was a watershed for the Flyers
a productive youth development programme and considerable commercial and media interest – every indication of success except a trophy-winning team,” he told me
Flyers team manager John Haig and vice-chairman Jack Dryburgh undertook an extensive scouting mission in Toronto in June 1984
“Their brief was simple – bring back three men who could transform a struggling side into a championship outfit
“Along with a valuable transatlantic contact Cameron Killoran
the pair spent a fortnight assessing over 80 recommended players
“Eventually they chose their three men
not solely on grounds of playing ability but mindful of maturity
marketability and adaptability to the British scene.”
the club believed the trio was what was required off the ice as well as on it
He was 34 and had played in the NHL with the Hartford Whalers
Stoyanovich was playing for Nova Scotia Voyageurs in the American Hockey League
Brown joined from the University of Western Ontario
The imports blended seamlessly with local talent like Andy Linton
John said: “In a still semi-professional era
coach Plumb understood the conflicting demands on time
and fitness and coaxed the best from weary limbs and minds
“He got to know and charmed families and employers
“He knew that the team was bigger than just a bunch of hockey players
Plumb valued the full squad and created the best team spirit the Flyers had known for years.”
Crowds doubled and ice hockey surpassed football
The Flyers were pulling in a bigger attendance than Raith Rovers
No mean feat given it was the time of the miners’ strike and mass unemployment
Among the fans was world darts champion Jocky Wilson
He became so enthusiastic that he sponsored winger Chic Cottrell in 1984
The Plumb-inspired Flyers were challenging for silverware again
They finished runners-up in the Autumn Cup after being defeated by Durham Wasps
John said the Flyers could have been forever the bridesmaid that season
“The league campaign had seen the Flyers first win in Edinburgh for six years and they were the first team to take a point against the Durham Wasps in the north east in that same time span,” he said
“The reigning champions Dundee Rockets lost five of the six league and cup matches against the Flyers which was the exactly how the Flyers had fared against Dundee the previous season – the tide had turned
“The Rockets were also defeated in the Scottish Cup final by the Flyers
“The Flyers gained their first piece of silverware.”
The Heineken Premier Division was a tight affair with the Flyers finishing second to the Wasps by two points in a title race which went down to the wire
The Rockets finished seventh after losing 8-5 to the Flyers in a midweek game
The top six in the final standings qualified for the Heineken Championship play-offs
The quarter-final involved a round-robin three-team group stage
Flyers won all four matches against Ayr Bruins and Cleveland Bombers
The classic 9-8 win against Ayr at Kirkcaldy Ice Rink was shown on BBC Grandstand
Stoyanovich got the winner with two minutes to the buzzer
They were joined by Murrayfield Racers and Streatham Redskins
Flyers headed to Wembley on a 15-game winning streak
John said: “For small-town Kirkcaldy
the Wembley weekend was an adventure in itself
with a scramble for transport and accommodation as it suddenly seemed possible that the dream could come true
over 1,000 Flyersâ fans journeyed south to London to roar their team on
“It was the Flyers first appearance at Wembley
“The town was riding the wave that had been created all season long by this team.”
Flyers played the Redskins in the first semi-final on Saturday May 4 at 1.30pm
Brown and Stoyanovich all grabbing a hat-trick each
Racers defeated the Bruins 13-4 in the second semi-final at 7.30pm
Wembley Arena was packed with 7,300 spectators and millions of viewers watched live on BBC Two’s Sunday Grandstand in the company of Des Lynam
It was expected to be a close game between the two great rivals
Brown opened the scoring after only two minutes
Plumb made it 3-0 on 10 minutes with a power play goal
Murrayfield scored through John Hay before Chic Cottrell netted from close-range for Flyers and Stoyanovich increased the lead to 5-1
Brown completed his hat-trick with two fine goals in the last 90 seconds
Murrayfield threw everything at netminder Andy Donald in the second period
Jim Lynch pulled one back three minutes into the final period
Stoyanovich struck for Flyers just 20 seconds later
Gordon McDougall and John Hay reduced the deficit to 8-4 but Jimmy Pennycook ended the Edinburgh side’s hopes with a goal five minutes from time
The buzzer sparked wild celebrations on the ice and in the stands
“The obvious stars were of course the three Canadians – Danny Brown
Dave Stoyanovich and Ron Plumb,” said John
They were all chosen for the end of season all-star team
Plumb was awarded coach of the year and Stoyanovich broke the scoring records at that time in the Heineken League by eclipsing Roy Halpin of the Rockets
“His 171 goals (and 277 points in total) across all competitions in the season also remains the most of any player in any season in history for the Flyers,” said John
“That said it wasn’t a three-man show
“Despite winning 9-4 it was the netminder who picked up man of the match
“Andy Donald was a key player throughout the season.”
The majority of fans thronged the ice rink a couple of days later to celebrate with the team who were also given a civic reception at the Townhouse in Kirkcaldy
The last word goes to John
“A near-perfect weekendâs work left the opposition outplayed and outclassed and by the end of Wembley 85 nobody could deny that the Flyers were worthy British champions
“The transformation was complete.”

with Southampton pulling 1-0 ahead of Leeds United in the first half and then managing to maintain their lead for the final 45
Bristol City and Coventry City currently in contention for the semi-finals

With just one game left in the regular Championship season
places in the Play-offs are still up for grabs
Burnley and Leeds United have secured their places in the Premier League next season by earning the first and second spot on the league table

although this of course can be affected by club spending and transfer fees
Tickets to the play-off finals are mainly sold through the websites of the competing clubs
Be aware that priority access will likely be given to season ticket holders or 'loyal fans' who have attended multiple fixtures
weâd suggest looking first at hospitality tickets like P1 Travel or Seat Unique
These packages are always more expensive than regular tickets
however they guarantee you a prime spot in the stands and you get extra perks such as food and drink access
Failing that, there's always the re-sale site Ticombo. While we wouldn't normally advise re-sale sites, this has a 4.7 rating on TrustPilot and allows you to pick your seat

Last yearâs base prices started at around ÂŁ18 for concessions and ÂŁ36 for adults
At the time of writing (Wednesday 30th April)
Club Wembley and P1 Travel provide packages that cost anywhere from ÂŁ800
however these come with additional food and drink
and sometimes the option to meet previous club legends

Old Trafford and Hillsborough hosted the fixtures - but in 2003 it was announced they would take place at the 'new' Wembley
The decision was primarily financial - to help repay the ÂŁ798m cost of rebuilding a new national stadium
said the move was "a financial necessity"
The first semi-final held at Wembley was actually the 1991 north London derby between Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal
but the fixtures moved there permanently from 2008
"There will be traditionalists upset by the idea of the semi-finals being at Wembley," said Barron
"So will some fans of clubs who would have to travel a long way to London
and we appreciate that it's not necessarily an ideal situation."
When the FA released its 2022-23 annual report last year
chief executive Mark Bullingham said it had finished repaying the debt from building Wembley
describing it as a "significant milestone"
The FA has not made an official statement on where future FA Cup semi-finals will be played but Wembley is the largest stadium in the United Kingdom - with a capacity of 90,000 - which allows more fans to attend
it is only second behind Barcelona's Nou Camp
The highest attendance for an FA Cup semi-final came in 2009
with 88,141 watching Manchester United against Everton
Crowds for the past three years have been:
Coventry v Manchester United - 83,672 (2024)
Manchester City v Sheffield United - 69,603 (2023)
Brighton v Manchester United - 81,445 (2023)
Manchester City v Liverpool - 73,793 (2022)
Though switching the semi-finals to Wembley was initially a financial decision
reverting to club venues would limit the amount of fans who could attend
The attendances for the past two FA Cup semi-finals played at club venues were 50,559 at Old Trafford (Chelsea v Blackburn) and 37,425 at Villa Park (Watford v Manchester United)
former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson along with Andy Burnham and Steve Rotheram - the mayors of Greater Manchester and Liverpool - called for the semi-final between Manchester City and Liverpool be switched to a venue in the north
Engineering works meant no trains were running from either city to or from London that weekend
Henderson said: "In my head it would make sense obviously to change it to a [different] neutral venue
especially with it being two teams from the north-west."
Burnham and Rotheram - in a joint letter to the FA - said: "We believe the most obvious solution is to move the game to a more accessible stadium and offer to work constructively with you to make that happen."
The FA provided free travel for 5,000 supporters to and from Anfield or the Etihad Stadium

Taking a look back at a classic West Ham United moment on this day in history
West Ham United secured the FA Cup for the second time in the Clubâs history by defeating Fulham on this day 50 years ago - and you can enjoy the goals again here
Alan Taylor scored both goals in a 2-0 victory over their Second Division opponents at Wembley
firing home two close-range finishes and delighting the Claret and Blue Army members in the 100,000-strong crowd
Billy Bonds captained the Irons to glory against a Fulham side that included his predecessor
having recovered from injury just in time to lead the Irons out at the Home of Football
âIâd picked up a niggly groin strain before Christmas and itâd got progressively worse as we got into our 1974/75 FA Cup run,â Bonds recalled
Iâd seen specialists who wanted to operate
had cortisone injections and taken some horrible-tasting pain-killers to get me through our ties against Southampton
while I had to miss nine of our last dozen league games
âGoing into the final against Fulham it was still touch and go whether Iâd play
Iâm only 75% fit and Iâm worried I wonât last 90 minutesâ
I got through my first-ever Wembley final and Alan Taylorâs two goals meant that I finally got to lift a trophy for the Hammers
âEveryone remembers Bobby Moore playing for Fulham that afternoon â Iâd been in awe of him since Iâd met him as a 14-year-old kid â and as a former West Ham team-mate
we all went and shook his hand because we had such tremendous respect for him
whoâd been a big part of my life both in terms of football and how heâd brought me up
He had a window-cleaning round and you could see the spring in his step as he walked off with his ladders knowing that I now had an FA Cup winnerâs medal in my pocket!â
Taylor and West Hamâs fantastic afternoon at Wembley again here!

Pep Guardiola: "Being in another final speaks so highly about the volume of generation of players and this club
And we are very pleased we are in the final
"But the season is defined by the Premier League and being consistent and this season that couldn't happen
"The most important thing is qualification for the Champions League and we have to be calm now and recover

We are a thousand million points behind Liverpool
the damage would be minor (if City win the FA Cup) but we cannot confuse that the season has been good if we finish in the top five and qualify for the Champions League
Oliver Glasner: "The players can party tonight and they will
"It's better (I didnât dance in the dressing room)
âWe can play the final, so most teams who play the final can win the trophy. So it's nothing new, I think, that I tell you."

those are the words of a Man Utd song to the tune of that Inspiral Carpets ‘this is how it feels’ classic
there was a (see below) massive block of empty seats high in the third tier at Wembley Stadium
a throng of black and white scarved lads and lasses roared Newcastle United to victory in the League Cup Final against Liverpool
there were plenty of other empty seats on show in various places where the seats should have been filled by Manchester City fans
This a complete contrast to the end that housed the Nottingham Forest fans
maybe we should cut Manchester City fans some slack
that this was Cityâs 30th trip to the national stadium since 2011
Iâve been to Wembley twice in the past couple of years (February 2023 and March 2025)
both times pushing the boat out with overnight hotel
a 50% increase for more or less the same seats in the space of two years
Would I be prepared to travel to a semi-final at Wembley if Iâd been there on 29 other occasions in the past fourteen years
Football is now an expensive business for fans and The Football Association are culpable
insisting that FA Cup semi-finals are played at Wembley
even if I can see their rationale when it comes to boosting their own coffers
I think playing semi-finals at Wembley devalues the final
although I could cite many other factors that have contributed to the FA Cup being devalued these past couple of decades
I asked my son where he thought last weekendâs semi-finals should have been played if Wembley wasnât to be used. He came up with Villa Park for Man City versus Forest and the Tottenham Stadium for Palace versus Villa
Both venues have been used in the past (well
before taking him on a trip down memory lane
Man City are just about the richest club on the planet
They have an annual turnover of more than ÂŁ700 million
something that only Real Madrid can eclipse
it seems a tad unrealistic that these new kids on the block can generate commercial revenues that exceed those of their cross-city rivals or even Englandâs most successful club
who reside just a short trip from the Etihad along the Leeds-Liverpool canal
The outcome of the 115 charges that are still to be determined might finally dispel the myth that Man City are the biggest club in England (if youâre talking money that is)
they should sell out their Wembley allocation for an FA Cup semi-final
no matter how many times theyâve been there in the recent past and no matter the indifferent season theyâre having
âWould I be prepared to travel to a semi-final at Wembley if Iâd been there on 29 other occasions in the past fourteen years?”
I reckon thereâs plenty who would be there instead

How to get tickets for the historic heavyweight championship bout on Saturday 19 July at Wembley Stadium
Oleksandr Usyk and Daniel Dubois have set a date for their upcoming battle for the undisputed heavyweight crown
with the bout confirmed for Saturday 19 July at Wembley Stadium
The blockbuster rematch sees Ukraineâs master technician Usyk
take on Londonâs own IBF champion Daniel Dubois in a winner-takes-all clash under the famous arch
It’s not just a title fight â it’s for every title
with all four major belts on the line for the first time in the UK since Lennox Lewis unified the division back in 1999
The bout is promoted by Frank Warren and Queensberry alongside Usykâs Right to Fight
and forms part of the Riyadh Season series
and it’s set to be a defining moment in modern boxing history
Usyk and Dubois’ first encounter in Wroclaw last year ended in controversy
Dubois dropped Usyk with a fierce shot to the midsection in Round 5 â ruled low by the referee â leaving fans
and the fighters themselves locked in debate ever since
Usyk recovered and stopped Dubois in the ninth
27-year-old Dubois has stormed back with three emphatic knockout wins
But with no British fighter ever having claimed the undisputed title in the four-belt era
he’s chasing more than just redemption â heâs chasing history
undefeated in 23 fights and already an undisputed cruiserweight champion
knows the end of his glittering career is near (heâs hinted at just two more outings before hanging up the gloves)
thereâs little left for him to prove â except unifying the division once and for all
The chance to carve your name into the record books alongside the likes of Ali
This isnât just another fight night â itâs a once-in-a-generation moment
Tickets for the Usyk vs Dubois fight go on sale at 12:00 on Wednesday 30 April. Register your interest here.

Things to do in London this week
Getty ImagesEmpty Manchester City seats at Wembley
You've only got to spend a few moments scrolling on your favourite social media platform to come across someone bashing Manchester City's fanbase for not selling out their allocation at Wembley on Sunday afternoon
it's perhaps one of the biggest dates in the football calendar for many fans and a unique opportunity to visit one of the most iconic sporting venues on the planet
Then you take a step back and realise: Sunday's FA Cup semi-final meeting with Nottingham Forest was Manchester City's 30th - yes
THIRTY - appearance at Wembley Stadium since 2011
To give that remarkable figure a bit of perspective
Liverpool managed a total of 30 appearances at the old Wembley in their entire history before the ground was demolished in 2002
An understanding of Manchester City supporters following the club to and from Wembley over the last 14 years should also take into account the extortionate costs of the day as a whole; a ticket averaging ÂŁ77 across the five pricing categories
And all this is before you even consider the wider costs of following the club home and away throughout the duration of a season well exceeding 50 games
additional costs of 'cup schemes' for the FA Cup and League Cup
But what is really happening online as fans continue to poke fun at Manchester City's empty seats at Wembley on Sunday afternoon
is supporters are missing the real issue at hand: FA Cup Semi-Finals should not be held at Wembley Stadium
all semi-finals in the FA Cup were contested at neutral venues large enough for the occasion
Common hosts including Birmingham's Villa Park and Manchester's Old Trafford
Perhaps a return to that more logical strategy could bring the semi-finals of the greatest cup football competition on the planet to former glory days
and rejuvenate such an occasion for who it should mean most to: the fans

BBC Sport football news reporterPublished26 April 2025571 CommentsManager Pep Guardiola says Manchester City supporters face a "difficult" situation with the team poised to play in a seventh consecutive FA Cup semi-final in London
Reports on Friday suggested City were struggling to sell out their allocation, external for the game at Wembley against Nottingham Forest on Sunday (16:30 BST)
Ticket prices range from ÂŁ30 to ÂŁ150 while travel to the capital as well as food will increase the outlay further
BBC Sport asked the Football Association (FA) whether it would review semi-finals being held solely at Wembley and sources said the venue has "the largest capacity in the country" and therefore "permits the biggest numbers of fans possible from each club to support their team in person"
City manager Guardiola said in his pre-match news conference: "One day maybe the FA Cup will be played here in the north
"They will come here to Old Trafford or Etihad or Anfield or Goodison Park
"All around the world people suffer economically and I understand completely it's not easy for them
We will play for the people who come to Wembley and for the people who would like to come but cannot
"I am pretty sure they would love to come but they can't and I understand perfectly."
Why are FA Cup semi-finals played at Wembley
This will be City's 28th match at the national stadium since its refurbishment was completed in 2007
They are also vying for a third consecutive final
having beaten and lost to rivals Manchester United in the previous two years
"The fans cannot come because the situation is difficult for travel
the people are at work on Monday and maybe will be back late
the prices of the tickets," added Guardiola
"I understand completely that they don't come
I'm pretty sure they would love to go
"We have to do it with or without them - our job is to do our best
but I'm not complaining at all - completely the opposite
I am alongside the people who would like to come but cannot."
Earlier this week, City fans staged a second protest outside Etihad Stadium before the Premier League game against Aston Villa on Tuesday and are planning further demonstrations over what they say is the club's refusal to increase the number of season ticket holders
The group claims fans then have to pay up to ÂŁ88 for an adult matchday ticket or up to ÂŁ58 for a child
while tickets are then sold through third-party sites for inflated prices

Twice a year, pop music heads around London and beyond are treated to a huge day out filled with some of the biggest artists around. The Christmas jingle bell ball is a while off, but we’re inching ever-closer to Capital’s Summertime Ball, which has just announced its full lineup.
This year, the big old dance will be headlined by Mariah Carey, which will mark the icon’s first concert in London (and indeed, the whole UK) for six years, having last performed at the Royal Albert Hall back in May 2019. The singer was announced yesterday, and the event has just gone ahead and announced Will Smith this morning. He will perform with DJ Jazzy Jeff, and comes alongside the second wave of names.

CRYSTAL PALACE fans broke strict Wembley rules just 30 seconds into their FA Cup semi-final clash with Aston Villa by letting off flares
The Wembley pitch was covered in smoke as flares were sparked by supporters
It took several minutes for the smoke to clear but play was able to get underway
Bringing flares and pyrotechnics into football stadiums in the UK is prohibited
The rules state: "It is illegal to bring them into stadiums and there are consequences for anybody who breaks the law and ground regulations
"The pitch must remain safe for players, managers and match officials, just as the stands should be for supporters."
Strict checks were in place at Wembley for the FA Cup semi-final but a small number of Palace fans managed to evade them.
A Wembley Stadium spokesperson said: âThe use of pyrotechnics, flares and smoke devices inside or outside Wembley Stadium is prohibited and illegal.
âWe will work with the police to identify those individuals who brought pyrotechnical devices inside the stadium for todayâs semi-final fixture and ensure further enforcement action is taken.â
Palace fans similarly set off smoke flares ahead of their last FA Cup semi-final clash - against Chelsea in 2022

Since opening in 2007, Wembley Stadium has been used as a multi-purpose arena for various sporting and entertainment events
The stadium has long been dubbed “the home of English football,” with the England national team playing the majority of their fixtures there
and wrestling events have also been hosted at the famous stadium
The Wembley record attendance at the old Wembley Stadium, which closed down for good in 2000, was 126,047 for the 1923 FA Cup final between Bolton Wanderers and West Ham United
The new Wembley Stadium has a capacity of 90,000
which means that the newer version of the stadium will never be able to break this 101-year record
the stadium has seen impressive attendance figures since it first opened
Here are Wembley's highest attendances for each event type it has hosted
There have been higher-profile football matches played at Wembley Stadium since then
but none have yet brought in more supporters than Cardiff City and Portsmouth did
Perhaps the fact that the match wasn't played between two big rivals made policing the game easier
which resulted in fewer seats being taken up by segregation
the New York Giants played the Miami Dolphins at Wembley Stadium in the first-ever NFL London match
The NFL has returned to London each year since
and interest in the sport has continued to grow in the UK
the Denver Broncos faced the Jacksonville Jaguars at Wembley in front of 86,215 supporters
that record attendance is now history as another one has been set
A record-breaking 86,651 NFL fans were at Wembley in October 2024 when the Jacksonville Jaguars faced the New England Patriots
particularly in the league's efforts to expand globally
It also highlights the growing significance of the sport globally
because the latest NFL record attendance closely rivals the highest-ever soccer match attendance recorded at Wembley in 2008 when Cardiff City clashed with Portsmouth in an FA Cup Final

Countless concerts have taken place at Wembley Stadium since it opened in 2007
One Direction and Taylor Swift all playing at the home of football
no one has managed to pack Wembley Stadium as well as Adele
Concerts can break the 90,000 capacity at Wembley because standing tickets are available at pitch level
so this record could be easily broken in the future
Could 100,000 fans squeeze in at some point
Boxing first made it to Wembley Stadium when George Groves and Carl Froch met in a British grudge match in 2014
Froch has famously bragged about fighting “in front of 80,000 at Wembley” ever since
but this attendance has been beaten on several occasions since in bouts featuring Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury
Joshua's fight against Daniel Dubois brought in 96,000 fans in September 2024
a record attendance for a boxing event in the United Kingdom
Dubois came out on top in the all-British clash for the IBF World Heavyweight Title via a fifth-round knockout
The previous record was held by Fury and Dillian Whyte
who brought in 94,000 fans for a fight in 2022
The Dubois/Joshua fight was able to beat this thanks to Saudi promoter
applying for the capacity of Wembley to be increased in the build-up to the fight
Whether this capacity will now be the norm for boxing events at Wembley remains to be seen
Perhaps the next fight at the national stadium will target the 100,000 mark
Wrestling hadn't been at Wembley since WWE hosted Summerslam there in 1992
but this is a figure that could be topped this year when the company returns again
The event's success has made WWE consider bringing WrestleMania to London
this record would almost certainly be shattered
The Challenge Cup has been played at Wembley since the 1920s and has frequently hit attendances of more than 90,000 at the old Wembley
In terms of Rugby League's Wembley Stadium record attendance
the 2010 Challenge Cup final between Warrington Wolves and Leeds Rhinos takes the top spot with an attendance of 85,217
Rugby Union has rarely been played at Wembley Stadium over the year
with Twickenham hosting all major England matches
the stadium was used when England hosted the 2015 World Cup
and 89,267 fans turned out to watch Ireland batter Romania
Not only is this a Wembley Stadium record attendance for Rugby Union
but it's also the largest turnout ever for a Rugby World Cup match
Apart from the Adele Wembley Concert in 2007, which saw 98,000 fit inside England's largest stadium
many other concerts have set remarkable attendance records at Wembley
Has anyone managed to break the 1988 record set by Michael Jackson
Taylor Swift staged unforgettable performances at Wembley for three nights between 20 June and 23 June
Each night of the Eras Tour attracted 89,000
A total of 267,000 attended the three-day concert
Swift's show went down into the annals of history as one of the most-attended concerts at the venue
breaking a solo singer attendance record set by Michael Jackson in 1988 during the Bad Tour
a total of 725,900 fans attended Swift's show between 15 and 29 August
UK news sources reported that 92,000 fans attended the concert at Wembley every night
the August 2024 show remains the most-attended music concert by an international artist at Wembley
Whether the new Wembley music concert record will ever be broken remains a matter of when and how that will happen
