the RAeS Weybridge Branch hosted Rear Admiral David Snelson CB FNI
recounting the story of the five ships that were named ‘Ark Royal’
Snelson began his naval career as a Fighter Controller aboard Ark Royal IV in 1978 and later became Captain of Ark Royal V in 2001
He opened the talk by asking if anyone had heard of the name Ark Royal and many had
He then put up a slide of the two people who he felt were responsible for this - Joseph Goebbels and Rod Stewart
The first Ark Royal was built in 1587 for Sir Walter Raleigh and was to be named Ark Raleigh
Due to money troubles Raleigh sold the ship to Queen Elizabeth’s Navy for £5000 (£1,414,100 today) who renamed it Ark Royal
The ship became the flagship of the English fleet during the Spanish Armada campaign of 1588 and survived into the reign of James I until she came to grief in the River Medway after striking her own anchor in shallow water in 1636
The name then remained dormant until 1914 when it was assigned to a merchant ship that was converted to a seaplane carrier while still on the building stocks
the cargo space becoming the aircraft hangar
Aircraft launching consisted of craning the aircraft out of the hangar in calm water and lowering it into the sea alongside for take-off
Aircraft recovery was the reverse procedure
During WW1 she took part in the ill-fated Gallipoli campaign where her aircraft were used for reconnaissance
Post-WW1 the ship was used for catapult trials
albeit the catapult was athwartships rather than the longitudinal catapult used today
she was renamed HMS Pegasus as the Navy wanted the name for another ship
In WW2 Pegasus was used as a catapult armed merchantman that could launch Hurricanes and Spitfires to attack shadowing aircraft
After the war she returned to civilian life and was finally broken up in 1950
The third Ark Royal was what is now commonly recognised as an aircraft carrier with catapults and arrestor gear
She was built in Birkenhead in 1934 and completed in 1938
her initial aircraft complement consisting of Fairey Swordfish and Blackburn Skuas
WW2 saw her in the thick of many naval campaigns
the South Atlantic in the search for the Graf Spee and the North Atlantic hunting the Bismarck
Fairey Swordfish torpedo bombers embarked on the third Ark Royal in the late 1930s
It was during North Sea operations that Joseph Goebbels entered the picture after the Ark narrowly avoided being bombed by Dorniers
Goebbels launched a propaganda campaign boasting how the Ark Royal had been sunk
All efforts to save her failed when the boiler intakes became flooded and power to the pumps was lost
When news of the loss reached her adopted city of Leeds
the city raised £9,400,000 (£433,000,000 today) to build a replacement
The ship’s company used their canteen fund to have a solid silver bell cast as a memorial to their ship and that has been used on all subsequent Ark Royals and is currently on display in the Fleet Air Arm Museum at Yeovilton
she was to be named ‘Irresistible’ but this was soon changed to Ark Royal to commemorate her predecessor
She was launched in 1950 by Queen Elizabeth
She was the first British carrier to have an angled deck and
Bill Bedford landed a Hawker P1127 on her as a taste of things to come
Her main role was as a Cold War Soviet deterrent and
the only non-US Navy ship to operate the aircraft
two Buccaneers from Ark Royal were launched for a 3000 mile round trip to ‘make some noise’ over Belize City as a show of force
In 1976 a BBC documentary was filmed on board the Ark that featured Rod Stewart’s ‘Sailing’ as the theme tune
Ark Royal IV entered Devonport for the last time in December 1978 and was decommissioned but not before the news broke that the 3rd Invincible class carrier would be named Ark Royal due to the public reaction to the retirement of Ark Royal IV
seen in the 1970s with a mixed deck of McDonnell Douglas F-4K Phantoms and Blackburn S2 Buccaneers
Ark Royal V was launched in 1981 and commissioned in 1985
She was slightly larger than her two sisters with a steeper Harrier ‘ski-jump’
She saw service with her Harriers in the Bosnian conflict and the 2003 Invasion of Iraq
although this time she was used as a mobile airfield for RAF Chinooks and utility Sea Kings
it was announced that she would be decommissioned earlier than planned
BAE Harrier GR.9s leave the Ark Royal for the final time on 24 November 2010
The talk was very well received and prompted many questions on its conclusion

At Elmbridge Cabinet meeting on Wednesday 20 November
Councillors agreed to sell Weybridge Hall to Equippers Church
Equippers Church emerged as the preferred purchaser as they intend to refurbish the building
creating a two-tiered auditorium and converting upper parts into studios for various community activities
The church's plans include community use of the hall for hosting events like weddings
all benefiting local residents and businesses.
Equippers Church's plans will not only preserve the historical essence of Weybridge Hall but also elevate its prominence on the high street
Their refurbishment will breathe new life into the building
making it a vibrant hub for community activities and events
thereby enhancing its significance in the local area
No offer was received from a theatre / arts group
At November’s Elmbridge Cabinet meeting
Councillors will be asked to consider the sale of Weybridge Hall to the Equippers Church
which opened in 1920 and was acquired by Elmbridge Borough Council in 1956
operated as a public hall until its closure in 2014
Swift Entertainment Venues (SEV) had an 18-month option to buy the building
The building has been actively marketed for sale since then
Several offers were received for the building
with most proposals including residential upper parts and various ground floor uses like gyms
The offers were evaluated based on conditionality
Equippers Church was deemed the best fit due to their use plan and transaction capability
Equippers Church plans to refurbish the building
featuring a two-tiered auditorium seating 300 to 400 people
The upper parts will be converted into studios for midweek meetings and workshops on mental health
art exhibitions and other community events
the church is expected to bring significant added value to local businesses in Weybridge
Selling the building to Equippers Church is seen as the best option for community and leisure use
offers a good price and ensures the building's future use better than the other offers received.
The transfer will be subject to a restrictive covenant that the ground floor of the building can only be used for uses considered to have a leisure / community use that provides an active frontage onto Church Street
Equippers Church have agreed to this term and are keen to purchase the building
Completion of the sale is subject to contract.

Elmbridge Museum frequently partners with schools to make history engaging and educational through innovative and inspiring exhibitions
One of their more recent collaborations was with students at St James C
to explore life in prehistoric Elmbridge for their Elmbridge’s Early Settlers exhibition.
Students handled artefacts from the museum collection
gaining insights into Bronze and Iron Age life
They learned how metals like copper and bronze helped Bronze Age people clear land and grow crops
while iron allowed Iron Age people to make better tools and weapons
students created artworks to be displayed as part of the exhibition
Their creative artwork brought these ancient objects to life

Defra secretary Steve Reed will today announce a £200m investment in a new National Biosecurity Centre at the UK’s animal health facility at Weybridge to improve the UK’s resilience against animal disease
Mr Reed is due to address the NFU conference in Westminster today amid the ongoing furore over the government’s inheritance tax reforms that is certain to overshadow over his appearance
Mr Reed attempt to divert some of the attention from the policy by announcing
he says will ‘deliver a profitable farming sector
while reaffirming Government’s cast iron commitment to food production
This includes the announcement about Weybridge
which has long been in urgent need of significant investment to enable it to deliver its key role in protecting the UK against diseases
whether Mr Reed will offer any hope on a funding agreement with the Dover Port Health Authority to enable checks for illegal meat imports to continue at Dover or on a review to close loopholes in the Border Target Operating Model for commercial imports
Mr Reed will also give an update on the government’s grant funding programme
He will announce a ‘£110m investment in technology’ under the Farming Innovation Programme which supports research and development of agri-technology for farmers
including more details on the Farming Equipment and Technology Fund
provides grants of up to £25,000 for farm equipment
But it remains to be seen whether this funding will be of the same level or on the same terms as was had been initially expected
Mr Reed is expected to say: “The underlying problem is that farmers do not make enough money for the hard work and commitment they put in
“I will consider my time as Secretary of State a failure if I do not improve profitability for farmers across the country
My focus is on ensuring farming becomes more profitable because that’s how we make your businesses viable for the future
And that’s how we ensure the long-term food security this country needs.”

the Weybridge Branch held the 69th RK Pierson Memorial Lecture at the Brooklands Museum
The ‘RKP’ was the Society’s first named lecture
inaugurated in November 1952 when Sir Roy Fedden delivered his definitive paper on the life and work of Pierson
who had been Vickers’ Chief Designer from 1917 until 1945
the lecture was delivered by Dr Emma Woolliams of the National Physical Laboratory
She is an acknowledged expert in the field of metrology and her lecture
‘Unleashing the Power of Satellites for Climate Action’ described the principles of climate change and the difficulties encountered when taking and comparing measurements taken from space
Woolliams began by explaining the importance of greenhouse gases to our survival
without which the global mean temperature would be somewhere around -18C
instead of the much more comfortable average temperature of +15C we have when you average day and night
The problem is that when the quantity and effect of these gases increases even slightly
temperatures start to rise and as little as 1.5C appears to constitute a climate crisis
Woolliams performed a remarkable demonstration of the effect of this increase on various molecules which the audience found most amusing
Some of the uses of satellite imaging and measurements were then described
together with some of the associated problems
uncertainty analysis and comparison in satellite Earth observation and measurement
While measurements from space have many advantages over measurements on the surface
they can still be affected by degradation due to say
or even changes or decay in orbital parameters
and so comparing results between satellites over many years requires the analytical tools and expertise that Emma and her team bring to bear
This entertaining and informative lecture was followed by a lively Q&A session after which a vote of thanks was given by John Dunne
The branch hosted a dinner afterwards in the museum’s Bluebird Room
and is grateful to BAE Systems for their ongoing support and to Brooklands Museum for hosting the event

New reforms to make farming more profitable have been announced today by the Secretary of State for Environment
who faced a barrage of questions and objections to the Government’s inheritance tax reforms
Speaking to farmers at the NFU conference in Westminster
Reed said the Government had a cast iron commitment to food production
The speech announced a raft of new policies including setting up a new National Biosecurity Centre to improve the Animal and Plant Health Agency animal health facility at Weybridge with an investment of £200 million
He said the Government would extend the Seasonal Worker visa route for five more years
Annual quota reviews would gradually reduce visa numbers
He echoed previous commitments to protect farmers in trade deals
ensuring parity for high environmental and animal welfare standards in future trade deals
“The underlying problem is that farmers do not make enough money for the hard work and commitment they put in,” said Reed
“I will consider my time as Secretary of State a failure if I do not improve profitability for farmers across the country
And that’s how we ensure the long-term food security this country needs.”

Morning rush hour is widely accepted as part of everyday life
you can expect there to be some level of congestion on the roads
as people go about their lives dropping off children at school and commuting to work
"Hundreds" of children have been late for school
and coffee shops have reportedly been left empty as people avoid going near the town
The town has become a "nightmare" this past month
and many feel it "disheartening" to wait in hours worth of queues to see no one at the road works site while eventually passing by
With ongoing roadworks at the M25's Wisely Interchange just a stone's throw away from the town, many have reported an increase in congestion on local routes. Surrey County Council (SCC) and Elmbridge Borough Council (EBC) have earmarked a £5 million overhaul on roads in Weybridge
because it is viewed as the largest employment centre in Elmbridge
The vibrant town has a plethora of businesses operating from its centre
Weybridge is being invested in by the council because it is identified as an attractive town to live in
Works include footway widening and improvements, better pedestrian crossings, carriageway and cycling path improvements, speed junction measures, decluttering of unused street furniture and lightening upgrade works. The works were organised to begin once major changes were completed at the M25 Wisley Interchange by National Highways
works will be carried out in phases to avoid disruption
with appropriate and safe traffic management measures set up to reduce the impact of construction
SCC also assured drivers would be able to get to and from their homes to businesses with minimal disruption
SGN works to repair a gas main on a key road in and out of the town with multi-way traffic signals and a footway closure have also added fuel to the fire in the town
Lights twice broke at the roundabout between Church Road and Balfour Road
SGN works are scheduled to end on Friday, February 7, while works are undertaken on Addlestone Road and Bridge Road from Monday
one resident who wishes to remain anonymous told SurreyLive: "Living in Weybridge has been a complete nightmare this month
Hundreds of children have been late for school
There were just four cars in Waitrose car park at 9am yesterday morning
"There seems to be no pressure whatsoever to complete these works as quickly as possible
I can testify that they finished work at 3pm yesterday for example
The lane rental charges that are imposed are completely ineffectual
Utility companies need to be properly incentivised to complete works like this as fast as humanly possible
Perhaps if lane rental charges were ten times higher
they'd be forced to change their behaviour."
In response to concerns made about the SGN works
a spokesperson from the utility company told SurreyLive: "SGN’s work on Balfour Road is expected to be completed by the end of today (Friday 31 January)
with works moving onto Portmore Park Road."
"We’re carrying out essential gas network upgrades in the A317 Balfour Road area to ensure Weybridge homes and businesses receive a safe and reliable supply of gas
We have multiple teams of engineers replacing our old metal pipes in the area to help complete our project as quickly as we can
we’ve needed to implement some traffic management measures around our work areas
Devonshire Road has been closed at its junction with A317 Balfour Road
while temporary traffic lights are in operation on A317 Balfour Road
"We’d like to apologise for the disruption caused by our faulty traffic light equipment earlier this week
This issue has been rectified and we’re now manually operating these lights to manage traffic flow and ease congestion in the area
"All our work is agreed in advance following close consultation with the local authority
We recognise roadworks can be frustrating for road users
the Weybridge community will be able to enjoy the benefits of a safe and reliable gas supply for many years to come."
Schools have reported hundreds of late pupils
with more than 100 turning up late at St Georges Junior School alone
Cleves School also reports a big impact as a result of the traffic
Businesses have also reported a lack in footfall
a spokesperson for Cafe Wood told SurreyLive there had been a drop in customers
particularly on Tuesday when the traffic lights stopped working
compared to weekends when most customers are those who live nearby aren't at work
Another resident told SurreyLive: "The lack of coordinated planning and impact assessment is evident
Neither the council nor companies have demonstrated any real concern
"Nor did they seem to have any rapid contingency planning for if the lights broke and needed fixing
They have brought the town to a near standstill for weeks."
lead of SCC and Elmbridge Borough Council representative
Tim Oliver states that Surrey sees one of the highest demands for works from utility companies
It is reportedly top five highest with 76 works starting every day for the last year
SCC has also confirmed with SurreyLive that SGN will have completed their work to allow the closure of Bridge Road to carry out signal refurbishment works
We have been monitoring these works closely and our Street Works Officer has carried out 34 inspections on the works on Balfour Road and Church Street
until they have opened the ground there is an element of the unknown
Lane rental fees are designed to encourage a reduction in works at traffic sensitive times and where this is not possible
to encourage promoters to complete their works more quickly
Observations from the initial implementation of our Lane Rental Scheme in April 2021 suggest that the scheme is reducing works durations significantly in certain areas
“We fully understand the frustration of Weybridge residents in light of the current SGN works in the town
“Utility companies’ demands in Surrey are amongst the top five highest in the UK with 76 works starting every day in the last twelve months
We have established a Streetworks Taskforce jointly with the major utility companies to tackle this and are continuing to lobby government for more powers to better manage the coordination of roadworks on Surrey’s busy road network
"We take the management and coordination of utility works very seriously and conduct regular site inspections to ensure works are carried out safely and with minimal disruption
due to traffic levels in Surrey being 66% higher than the national average
even the most well-planned works can still impact traffic flow.”
there have been several unavoidable emergency works in the Weybridge area recently and these have increased the level of disruption beyond levels that we would consider allowing for planned works
Weybridge has of course experienced significantly higher volumes of traffic during the Junction 10 improvement works which are due to be completed this Summer."

Rayogreatest hitssurrey east hampshirenewsPlans for new Weybridge health centre A proposal for a new “state-of-the-art” Weybridge Health Centre has been submitted by the NHS
A community hospital engulfed by a devastating fire seven years ago could finally be replaced as new plans have been put forward
the site has been a focal point for healthcare since 1928
A proposal for a new “state-of-the-art” Weybridge Health Centre has been submitted by the NHS
The scheme will see the construction of a large
two-storey building with 22 consulting rooms and 13 treatment rooms
Planning documents reveal the proposed health centre will have a “generous” waiting and reception area
the original Weybridge Community Hospital was ravaged in a horrific fire as the blaze tore through the building
Neighbouring homes were evacuated but thankfully no one was injured
It was later discovered the fire was most likely caused by an electrical fault in a wall-mounted air conditioning unit
people have been accessing health care services in temporary buildings on the site
Those living in Weybridge have endured several rounds of consultation and public engagement events over the years ahead of the greatly anticipated rebuild
Feedback from residents revealed people would like to see greater provision of X-ray and physio services as well as a walk-in centre
Car parking was put as a key concern for people: both ensuring there is enough for people using the centre and to prevent people visiting the high street from using the health campus
The application states: “The Proposed Development will provide a high quality
to serve the local community and provide a permanent home for the Phoenix Family Practice
as well as a range of other health care services for the public.”
It adds: “The layout has been developed to ensure that the patient and visitor experience is of the highest possible quality
The building is considered to be accessible to all
easy to navigate and provides an uplifting and reassuring environment for its future patients.”
has worked together with North West Surrey Alliance and NHS Surrey Heartlands to bring the proposal forward
The organisations have sought to provide a “fit for purpose” building which will “manage increasing future demand and internal and clinical patient environments”
Distinctions between patient and staff areas are maintained throughout the designs
Staff will have exclusive access to an internal courtyard
their own entrance and car park as well as being housed in a separate part of the building
People can comment on the proposals until January 22
on Elmbridge Borough Council’s planning application website
An officer is due to decide on the application by March 18

Many Weybridge residents may be wondering about the future of Weybridge Hall.
Elmbridge Borough Council entered into an 18-month option agreement with theatre and arts operator
to enable them to raise funds to purchase and undertake a significant refurbishment of Weybridge Hall
That agreement has just expired and while we are continuing to engage with and support SEV’s proposals
we also need to ensure that all our buildings deliver a valued contribution for our community
in the coming weeks we will be marketing Weybridge Hall to establish if there is any other interest in buying the building
We will instruct an agent to market Weybridge Hall for sale to attract interest from community groups as well as private leisure
This does not preclude an agreement with Swift Entertainment Venues
but it aims to ensure that this important asset on Weybridge High Street can once again flourish and add value to the town centre
Swift Entertainment is hosting public meetings about Weybridge Hall in June
led by Amy Gordon (3/8) and Charlotte Stubbs (2/14)
reduced Buckinghamshire to 85 before Surrey trickled through to a five-wicket victory
the Three Feathers were on the money from the very start
After three miserly overs that cost the hosts nine runs
the first Bucks batter to depart became Holly Wilson
Wickets continued to tumble in a hurry throughout the powerplay as the visitors finished the six-over period on 18 for four
Charlotte Lambert bowled Annie Townsend (5) three balls later after the fall of the first wicket before Stubbs had Pip Lloyd-Williams (0) caught by Emily Burke and Sophie Midwinter (1) was run out also by Burke
Another Bucks batter fell as Amelia Ridgway (8) was caught by debutant Ivreen Dhaliwal off Stubbs before the visitors mustered a partnership
and Tegan Stockdale strung a 20-run stand that was broken when Burke bowled the latter for 10
Warren carried on accumulating runs for her side and took their tally to 68 in the 16th over when Denman struck
having the Bucks batter caught by Robyn Bentley
Gordon was back into the attack and delivered a brilliant two-wicket maiden
bowling Natasha MacBean for two and dismissing Megs Woodward for nought
She claimed a third wicket on the final ball of the innings
finishing with 3/8 as Bucks were all out for 85
who is in the South East Stars EPP and plays for Surrey u-15s
taking the hosts past 30 in the fourth over
did not go down without putting up a fight and injecting some tension in the Surrey camp
Bucks collected four quick wickets on either side of the powerplay
starting with Dhaliwal being caught by Rosie BP off Bella Mason’s bowling for 13
the skipper was cleaned up by MacBean for 17 before Ridgway had Johal trapped lbw for four and Stockdale dismissed Robyn Bentley for two
Maddie Blinkhorn-Jones and Stubbs were in the middle
their partnership of 12 easing some nerves in the home dressing room before Stubbs was run out by Wilson
ensured that the hosts ended the T20 triple-header with smiles on their faces as their mature
unbeaten 30-run stand from 28 balls steered Surrey to a five-wicket win
Surrey secured a comfortable 38-run victory over Essex to kickstart their T20 triple-header at Weybridge
Laxmi Johal’s anchoring knock proved to be the perfect foil to Amy Gordon’s top-order dash before a clinical bowling performance clinched the win for the Three Feathers
Gordon was in the mood to take no prisoners as she doubled down on Essex from the very get-go
The opening two balls of the innings were sent to the boundary rope before the Surrey skipper outrageously ramped Grace Poole for the third four of the over
Despite losing Maddie Blinkhorn-Jones for one
Gordon continued her merry way in the powerplay
hammering five more fours and ensuring Surrey were off to a flyer
by the time Jasmine Westley had her caught at mid-off in the fifth over
Laxmi Johal (43) and Robyn Bentley (23) moved the scoreboard nicely post-powerplay
adding an important 50 runs together before Bentley was removed by Ashmitaa Surenkumar
Bethan Miles (24*) and Johal continued the good work
finding the crucial boundary when required
as Surrey cemented their position in the game
Amu Surenkumar broke the 37-run stand when she bowled Johal
Surrey managed to take 23 runs from the last 15 balls
The hosts started on the right foot with the ball as well
with Miles bowling a tidy first over and Gordon claiming the first breakthrough
getting Jasmine Westley caught by Stubbs for three
The skipper picked up another wicket in her second over
Matilda Callaghan and Amu Surenkumar prevented Surrey from taking any further wickets in the powerplay but the visitors finished the first six overs well below par on 24/2
The Essex pair continued to bat in a measured manner before debutant Shimako Kato picked up her first Surrey wicket when she had Matilda Callaghan caught by Gordon for 12
was looking to make room and cut behind point from the leg side
getting cleaned up by Anna Lewis for 44 in the process
Rebecca Denman – the second debutant in the Surrey side – also got off the mark as she had Scarlett Hughes caught by Gordon for one
got her reward when she had Kelly Castle caught by Lewis for a busy 22 off 18 balls
having led by example with the bat and ball
delivered the last over and Surrey completed a comprehensive victory when Blinkhorn-Jones ran out Yasmin Daswani for two on the very last ball of the match
Kato and Denman were presented their Surrey debut caps
Allrounder Kato is a 21-year-old Japanese international whilst Denman is a part of South East Stars’ Emerging Player Programme and has represented Surrey u17s and u18s previously

More than £200 million of funding will “significantly upgrade” the Animal and Plant Health Agency’s laboratories
Defra says the work at the Weybridge site is a response to increasing animal and plant disease threats
which come with knock-on impacts to public health
food and farming businesses and the wider economy
The government also said the laboratories it inherited were in a “poor condition with their long-term future in doubt – posing a significant risk to Britain’s farmers and human health”
it noted that a National Audit Office report in 2022 found that ‘the UK’s primary science capability for managing threats from animal diseases’ had been subject to a ‘long period of inadequate management and under investment’
It said Defra had estimated that £2.8 billion was needed over 15 years
accepted the NAO’s report but didn’t commit to the £2.8bn sum suggested,” said NFU chief animal health and welfare adviser Catherine McLaughlin
“The £200m announced falls well short of that so a commitment of further investment is needed.”
She called for clarity on what improvements would be selected
NFU chief animal health and welfare adviser Catherine McLaughlin
APHA Chief Executive Jenny Stewart said: “APHA is at the forefront of tackling animal and plant disease outbreaks
“This funding is hugely welcome to support crucial upgrades that will allow us to continue delivering the disease surveillance
detection and research work which protects against new and existing threats
“APHA’s vital work includes leading the current operational response to the impacts of avian influenza and bluetongue virus which have been affecting farmers across the country
This includes testing thousands of samples
which requires significant laboratory capacity
“Risks to our biosecurity will continue and this investment will help ensure we are better prepared for the future.”

this rare plot on the River Wey is a haven for wildlife including the local deer
Property News
It’s home to the most expensive street outside London, but leafy Weybridge has another claim to fame — it’s here that the River Wey feeds into the Thames, creating a network of pretty waterways in the Surrey commuter hotspot
with various turns and tributaries as it makes its way towards London from its source near Alton in Hampshire
One quirk in the river has formed Trinity Island: a three-quarter-of-an-acre plot with a single two-bedroom home, now on sale for £1.15 million
Sole occupancy marks Trinity as a rarity even among the south east’s cluster of commutable private islands
“We’ve never seen one like this,” says Robert King
“There’s a handful of [residential] islands on the Thames
but the majority of them are shared by multiple homes
freehold island with single occupancy is rare indeed.”
“I deal with a lot of property on the rivers
and to have just one home on three quarters of an acre is fantastic.”
Hidden by a band of trees that trace the perimeter
Trinity Island is happily sequestered from well-heeled Weybridge
It’s still got the desirable KT13 postcode
As the tributary curves it dwindles to little more than a stream
which separates the island from meadowland to the west and south
part of its freehold title is on the mainland — “for want of a better description” — with space for six or seven cars behind double gates on Wey Meadows
just before the footbridge that leads over to the island
The title also covers the footbridge itself and both banks
meaning that 730 feet of river frontage is up for grabs in the sale
it’s a 15-minute walk to Weybridge High Street
which delivers commuters into Waterloo in half an hour
The river itself is fully navigable to the Thames
which connects to the Wey at a lock around a mile downstream
At the heart of the plot is a raised two-bedroom house
with a triple aspect kitchen and living room that connects to two terraces overlooking the gardens
Planning consent was previously granted to replace the relatively modest 700-square-foot home
who expects a new owner could win approval for an extension or rebuild
Any new construction would be required to match the elevation of the existing house
“to comply with the flood risk assessment reports,” he adds
The plot also features a separate summer house with a WC
which could come in handy as a home office or studio while works were underway
have reluctantly decided to move on for their retirement
which includes all manner of bird species,” says King
“Each year deer jump the stream to have their young on the island
As far as they’re concerned it’s an absolute haven for wildlife.”
A handful of commutable private islands have appeared on the market over the last year, including a private islet on the Thames and a waterside estate in Marlow with a 4.5 acre island

We are aware of the media and social media comments on the proposed event at D'Oyly Carte
Weybridge and have the below statement on the matter
We received an application for a temporary event notice for the Summer Music Events scheduled from July 4-6 2025 at D'Oyly Carte
we also received objections from both the Police and the council’s own Environmental Health Officer as the applicant had not provided sufficient information to identify the necessary measures to ensure public safety
and the lack of adequate protection to prevent members of the public falling into the river.
Despite our offer to meet with the applicant to discuss and address these concerns
we had no choice but to refuse the temporary event licence and to proceed to a hearing
The hearing was held on Tuesday 7 January and the decision was reached to deny the application on safety grounds
The applicant can either appeal this decision or they can work with the local Police and Elmbridge Borough Council to mitigate the safety concerns raised and then submit another application for a temporary event notice
We remain committed to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of the public and are open to further discussions to resolve these issues
You can watch the Licensing sub-committee meeting via webcast.
