The game between a Seasiders' squad and the fundraising side Inter Legends was due to take place on Saturday
however the decision has been made to cancel the match
This is due to Whitby Town being unable to field enough players to fulfil a starting XI and ample substitutes
Following discussions between Whitby Town's Chief Executive Officer

The club has apologised "for any disappointment caused ahead of what was set to be a fun-filled day at the Towbar Express Stadium"
It says that anyone who purchased tickets in advance will be refunded automatically in the next 7 business days

"The town have been very supportive of the club so far this year
and we've been lucky in the respect of being able to stay up under the management of Gary Little
We'd like to thank all the team and I'd especially like to thank all of the supporters and volunteers for everything that they've done in this season.
We hope everyone has a fantastic bank holiday weekend

A new music festival is coming to the GTA town of Whitby, ON. Town Brewery has established the Whitby Music Fest in an effort to bring a live music scene to the town. The event will run from June 26 to 29
and even a barber shop around Whitby's downtown area being repurposed into music venues over the course of the weekend
Town Brewery describes the event as "loosely based on Toronto's legendary NXNE festival," looking to foster "more of a 'local community' vibe."
The festival is free for attendees, except for the main stage event for which tickets can be found on Town Brewery's website.

To help me along on the 120 mile journey from Manchester even further up North, Toyota kindly matched me with their all-new C-HR Hybrid Plug-in.
Equipped with plenty of tunes and scenic views
the two-and-a-half-hour drive sailed by and before we knew it Dave and I had arrived at the Yorkshire coast.
You can almost imagine what life in medieval England would have been like here; fishing for your dinner as the waves thrash your boat from side to side before walking up the cobbled streets to the local tavern for an ale in front of a roaring fire.
We pottered around both sides of the town, exploring twee and eccentric gift shops and those selling gothic wares in true Whitby fashion before making our way out to sea as far as the East Pier would let us and walking back again, soaked with seaspray and deserving of a well-earned fish and chips pitstop followed by a mocktail and a warm drink at the French-themed Cafe Montmartre
Much to the readers disappointment, we gave The Dracula Experience on Marine Parade a miss
having done it back in 2020 after the initial lockdown
I was so busy focusing on following the one-way

afraid of one of the crude animatronics would come to life and get me) and
before I could say ‘The blood is the life!’
we’d been ejected out the back door onto the side street.
A quick stop off at the wonderfully whimsical The Little Fox Coffee & Bookshop for a fitting bedtime read later and we were on our way down the road to Sandsend
Nestled between the wild North Sea and heather-draped North Yorkshire moors sits Saltmoore; an otherworldly estate that’s name pays homage to the landscapes that make up its home.
After driving for seven minutes we spotted the turn-off; ‘X’
or at least a sign reading ‘Saltmoore’ in a fancy curly font
marked the spot and led us down a long and windy pathway until we reached a limestone building with sage green bistro chairs and tables neatly sat to the right of it
Beautifully pruned potted pine trees stood ten feet apart
and golf buggies with Saltmoore branding on them lined the driveway.
the ochre-drenched colour palette gives a subtle nod to the golden blooms of the gorse shrub found throughout the estate
bringing elements of the outside in and reconnecting its residents with nature.
scoffing our cookies and making good use of all the lavish additions
it was time to make our way down to the spa known as ‘The Sanctuary at Saltmoore’.
we made our way back to our suite to get ready for dinner in the Brasserie and Orangerie Bar.
Gorgeously decorated with sage green fabrics
floor-to-ceiling windows and a floral arrangement suspended from the ceiling
The Orangerie Bar makes for a picturesque dining spot which seems like it would be utterly magical in the summer.
With seasonal menus curated by Head Chef Adam Maddock in collaboration with Consultant Chef Tommy Banks
owner of the Michelin-starred The Black Swan at Oldstead
dishes are designed to nourish the soul with the Northern values of both quality and quantity in mind
We ordered some of the Saltmoore focaccia to share as we pondered over the menu
along with a rhubarb fizz mocktail for myself and a pint of local lager for Dave
The focaccia was generously salted and served warm alongside a rosemary oil for dipping - absolutely perfect.
Dave chose something equally as Northern and soul-soothing; beef cheek suet pudding with king cabbage
red wine sauce and horseradish creme fraiche.
We polished both off with delight and left pleasantly full and satisfied
deciding to swap dessert for a nightcap by the roaring fire in the cosy Lounge Bar instead.
After what can only be described as the best night’s sleep I’ve had for as long as I can remember
Dave and I bid a sad farewell to the Gorse Suite and made our way down to The Brasserie for breakfast.
I decided it was only right to go for the Full Saltmoore Breakfast; a nice helping of high-quality, produce from Oldstead cooked to perfection with eggs cooked to your liking (poached for me) whilst Dave decided to take a healthier approach
Both solid ways to start the day in their own right.

The startling figure has emerged as part of the ongoing development of a new neighbourhood plan by Whitby Town Council
The study by consultants working on the Whitby Neighbourhood Plan highlights a potentially significant increase from previous estimations.
at this time the NA contained 6,224 households and 7,951 dwellings
implying 1,727 dwellings (or ‘household spaces’) with no usual resident
This shows a trend towards an increasing number of dwellings with no usual resident household
Research was undertaken on the number of properties registered for business rates
this gave an estimated figure of 3,275 commercial holiday lets
This is an extremely large number of holiday lets relative to the number of residential dwellings
It also suggests that many buildings are in exclusive commercial use and are not being captured by Census data as residential dwellings
Assuming that none of the commercial holiday lets are being captured in the Census as residential dwellings
it is possible that as much as an estimated 44.5% of existing residences are non-primary."
Local Councillor Neil Swannick noted that previously
I think previously we've been talking about 20%
He expressed deep concern about the implications
"We're losing residential properties that people in Whitby can afford to buy or or rent"
Councillor Swannick raised his concerns and questioned Alison Hume MP on the progress being made with the new housing minister regarding the registration of short-term lets and changes to use classes
He sought to understand what steps were being taken to address this urgent issue
MP Alison Hume acknowledged the significant concern,
Alsion Hume indicated her support for allowing restrictions on short-term lets on a local area basis and within specific zones in areas like Whitby
She explained that the matter is being examined in detail and involves two ministers: Matthew Pennycook and Chris Bryant
The findings of the study align with a broader understanding that Whitby faces considerable affordability issues and development constraints
The study in the Whitby Neighbourhood Plan notes a trend of increasing dwellings with no usual resident
rising from 19.5% in 2011 to 21.7% in 2021
This rate is significantly higher than the average across North Yorkshire (8.3% in 2021) and England (6.0% in 2021)
The report suggests that due to Whitby's coastal and desirable location
it is assumed that the majority of dwellings without usual residents are second homes or holiday lets
Further research estimated approximately 3,275 commercial holiday lets in the area as of October 2024
a figure considered extremely large relative to the number of residential dwellings
The study posits that if these commercial holiday lets are not counted as residential dwellings in Census data
the estimated proportion of non-primary residences could reach 44.5%.
The Neighbourhood Plan study concludes that in a context of limited new housing development
the growth of second homes and holiday lets will likely reduce housing availability for those wishing to live in the area
The full report is available on the Whitby Neighbourhood Plan webpage

Macclesfield FC ended their title-winning season on a high with a comfortable 4-0 victory against Whitby Town
The first big opportunity came in the 19th minute as Lewis Fensome made his way into the box before a deflected shot just breezed past the post
John Rooney’s delivery from the corner found Fensome at the back post as he headed the ball across goal to Rollin Menayese
who bagged his second Silkmen goal of the season
Luke Duffy extended the Silkmen’s lead after shooting from distance
which hit the post before taking a heavy deflection off Whitby keeper
Danny Elliot came close to scoring just before half-time as he curled an effort goalwards
The second half looked very promising for Robbie Savage’s side as they looked to cruise their way to a 35th win in the Northern Premier League
Elliott came close to making it 3-0 as his powerful shot was straight at the Seasiders’ keeper
Tre Pemberton laid the ball off to Duffy who fired his shot into the top corner with a sublime finish to increase Macclesfield’s goal cushion to three
Paul Dawson nearly found himself on the scoresheet as after some good build up play
D’Mani Mellor’s chipped ball managed to find Sam Heathcote who unselfishly played the ball across to Elliott to make it four for the Silkmen
A truly incredible season sees the NPL Champions finish on 109 points with a whopping goal difference of 79
Next season will be heavily anticipating for Macclesfield as they play in the sixth tier of English Football in the Vanarama National League North

An Esk Valley school governor has voiced concerns about the impact of school transport policy changes on the ability of local children to access Whitby secondary school
North Yorkshire Council has moved from its previous ‘catchment’ system to now only providing free transport to a child’s nearest school
The council says it needs to make the change to help address a £48m budget shortfall
But critics say the change is causing unnecessary disruption
uncertainty and inconvenience to hundreds of families — and have questioned if the new policy will actually save the authority any money
Joanne Kevan is a governor at Castleton Primary School she says the councils new policy has made it "impossible to predict which secondary schools local children will now attend"
She highlighted the case of one family in Castleton for whom Whitby does not appear at all within their five nearest schools.
Jo Kevan noted that the top three nearest schools can vary depending on the specific address
could lead to a situation where "a cohort of five children from a primary school could very well each end up getting a place at five separate secondary schools"
The school governor warned that this uncertainty could have a negative impact on the number of families who choose to live in these Esk Valley villages potentially leading to a "devastating effect on the viability of these small rural schools"
Kevan also expressed concern that Whitby School could see fewer students in the future due to the policy change affecting other feeder schools.
She suggested that Whitby School might be "effectively forced into subsidizing or funding transport for those affected by the policy" and expressed a concern that the policy could mean a reduction int eh number of pupils for Whitby school as more Esk Valley pupils start attending other schools deemed to be nearer to their homes
North Yorkshire Council’s assistant director for education and skills
explained that the council has a "duty to provide homeschool travel for eligible children of compulsory school age" in accordance with legislation and statutory guidance
which in most cases means to the nearest school
She stated that the council adopted the new policy as part of efforts to manage it's current spending of over £51 million a year on home-to-school travel
Amanda Newbold clarified that while "parents have the right to preference any school of their choice when they apply for places..
they don't have a right of free of charge travel arrangements to any school"
Amanda Newbold pointed out that across the county
"about one in three children don't attend their catchment secondary school and around 45% across the county don't attend their catchment primary school".

She also mentioned that following feedback during consultation
the council has extended the entitlement to free travel for low-income households to cover a greater distance for secondary schools than the national requirement
aiming to provide those families with more meaningful choices
The company states that these changes aim to improve service reliability and punctuality

Robbie Savage's Macclesfield humbled Whitby 2-0 with a couple of strikes in each half
Blues player-manager Gary Liddle recalled an experienced trio in defenders Nathan McGinley and Connor Smith
plus midfielder Adam Gell after Easter Monday's 1-0 win over Blyth Spartans.
Town conceded twice in five minutes just before the half hour
Their Cheshire hosts then punished them twice more after the interval
with the Seasiders giving a first league appearance to sub keeper Nick Cranston
Liddle spoke to Whitby Town TV post-match:
The Seasiders finish in 16th spot in NPL Premier
with just one point separating seven sides from 12th to 18th
Gary Liddle's men were out of sorts in a quiet first half that the NPL Premier's basement side had the better of
Liddle himself admitted his side "weren't really at it" in the first period
Adding they improved after the break "but not that much"
"It wasn't the greatest spectacles"
"It was probably two teams with nothing to play for."
Blues goalkeeper Shane Bland saved well low to his left with an outstretched leg from a solo effort in a largely-uneventful opening 45 minutes
The news that Matlock were expected to get a three-point deduction thus saving Whitby from relegation lent the game an end-of-season feel
it was ex-Spartan Mitch Curry who netted the only goal of the game
Whitby Town TV caught up with the marksman after full-time:
Whitby in Yorkshire is chock-full of goths
As I seem to be The Spectator’s adopted goth
I was asked if I might like to write about Whitby Goth Weekend (WGW)
Goth is a fashion that emphasises darkness and death: Edgar Allan Poe and Alice Cooper are the best examples

North Yorkshire Council says that construction work on Whitby's new Maritime Hub will start next in April and that a result the Endeavour Wharf car park will be closed from 31 March
The council say that operational harbour access will be retained for permit holders and that alternative parking is available on on Langborne Road
which secured £10 million from the Towns Fund in 2020
is now set to begin construction with a projected 13-month timeline
The new hub is intended to capitalise on the growth of the maritime and offshore renewables sectors by providing business
It is hoped the hub will address socio-economic challenges
creating high-quality jobs for younger people
and attracting partners in the offshore renewables industry
The facility aims to provide training and employment opportunities
targeting a younger demographic within Whitby
The project gained planning approval in August 2024 and received the final go-ahead in January
Concerns have been raised by residents regarding the risk of flooding and the loss of parking spaces during construction
The Whitby Maritime Hub is expected to be fully operational by Spring 2026. Once construction is complete 198 parking spaces will be available on the site including disabled car parking
The Whitby Maritime Training Hub will build on the town’s proud fishing and sailing heritage with a dedicated centre created in Endeavour Wharf to provide a greater breadth of career paths in the historic port
Construction work on the hub is due to start next week and is planned to be completed by the end of April 2026
The development aims to provide first-class training facilities as well as accommodation for businesses and service providers to inspire the next generation of skilled apprentices and maritime industry professionals
The facility is set to also contain engineering workshops and office space for marine-based start-up businesses and other maritime industries
whose responsibilities include economic growth and harbours
“This is a significant milestone for this project with construction work due to start next week
“We believe the hub can open the door to new economic growth in coastal areas and be a key development for Whitby
affirming the town as a key player in the modern fishing industry and a pivotal link in the supply chain for the growing renewable energy sector
“It is imperative that there is a sustainable and diverse range of job opportunities for our communities
and the building of a world-class training facility can only help inspire the future apprentices and professionals in the maritime sector.”
North Yorkshire Council will initially manage the facility
The facility is hoped to be occupied by local
This would enable new commercial opportunities in the maritime and marine sectors
supporting the local economy and reducing a reliance on seasonal employment such as tourism
“Presenting new opportunities for people in and around Whitby is the main reason for the hub being built
“I hope the excitement will build even further as the opportunities that these facilities will offer for local families become clearer over the next year
and more people and organisations engage with the project as it moves towards completion.”
which is expected to cost £9.6 million
will come from the £17.1 million given to Whitby as part of the Government’s Town Deals programme
A total of £37.3 million was awarded under the programme to Whitby and Scarborough in 2021
In a public consultation held last year as part of the planning process
69 per cent of people who submitted their views were supportive of the project
will lead on the construction with work due to start on Monday (April 7)
They will be supported by the council’s building design consultancy
who will assist with the day-to-day management of the construction site
"We're really excited to be working alongside North Yorkshire Council to create this landmark development which will add to Whitby's proud maritime heritage
"We share the council’s passion for creating employment opportunities for this community
In partnership with our local supply chain partners
we will provide 800 hours of employment support through our bespoke Building Lives Academy programmes
“This will help those furthest from the job market become work-ready and give those involved the chance to leave a lasting legacy by contributing directly to the build of the new hub
“The project will act as a live learning environment facilitating 150 weeks of apprenticeship training
creating 20 work experience placement opportunities and opening our doors to visitors from local community groups and educational organisations.”
The tourist information centre situated at the entrance to Endeavour Wharf car park remains open to the public every day between 9am and 4pm
Alternative car parking is available nearby and the town’s park and ride will also open again from Sunday, April 6. You can see a full list of parking options on North Yorkshire Council’s website at https://www.northyorks.gov.uk/car-park-directory
