magazine theme by Jegtheme From a delicious selection of local producers and some brilliant live music to a silent disco and loads of family fun - Taste Cumbria’s Wigton festival brought smiles all around on Saturday It was the first event of the year and kickstarted the Taste Cumbria calendar in style The festival was free to attend and took place right in the heart of the town the neighbouring Market Hall hosted plenty of family entertainment the Wigton festival proved to be another hit with visitors a competition to design a new celebratory flag for Wigton was won by local resident Elli Logan-Airey Her colourful creation featured a throstle and the pump and lamp from the Market Square green grass and a ploughed field to showcase the rural location and a rainbow to demonstrate the town’s positivity and inclusivity She was presented with a trophy by Ian Brown The Taste Cumbria food festivals are organised by Cumberland Council.  “Thank you to everyone who came and supported another great Taste Cumbria festival and to the council’s event team and volunteers who work so hard to make this happen.  “We stage these events to boost the local economy both in the towns and city we visit and for the hugely enterprising small businesses who trade at them I can’t wait for the rest of the year’s events and really hope you will come and support them.” The next Taste Cumbria event is the Taste of the Sea festival in Maryport on Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 August Penrith seconds were drawn away against Wigton’s second string in the semi-final of the County Shield competition They played the fixture on Friday evening and if they thought they were going to have an easy ride because they ran their first team so close in the Cumbria League they were to be disappointed The Wigton side was a mixture of youth and experience and proved a hard nut to crack In fact it was the home side who got their noses in front taking a three-point lead following a penalty head on to the posts Penrith came back with an unconverted try following a penalty kicked into the home 22 Good lineout ball was won at the tail and there was a drive to the line the visitor’s forwards were stopped just short and Tom Kirk at scrum half sniped down the right hand side of the ruck to score Penrith lost the ball at the restart and came under pressure as the home side pushed for the try They managed to keep their line intact but in doing so conceded a penalty which the hosts kicked to move back within a point strong tackling from the home side meant they gained good possession as Penrith kept losing the ball in contact and visitors’ trump card was their lineout where Jack Huddart dominated with the help of some accurate throwing in by hooker Josh King Penrith extended their lead from a 5m scrum broke from No8 and shrugged off a couple of tackles to score The home side then ran a penalty which caught the visitors on the back foot and they conceded another penalty under the posts which was goaled for the home side to trail by one point at 9-10 Penrith looked to be easing ahead when they scored a nice length of the field just before half time the home side were on the attack and chipped towards the 22 Max Dunford got back to tidy the ball up and set up Fraser Nicolson who saw his chance and broke out to half way Quick ball came to Kirk who managed to put Olly Bibby through the narrowest of gaps on the touchline at half way and he did the the rest from there Penrith led 17-9 at the break but this Wigton side weren’t finished they kicked a penalty into the 22 in the opening minutes of the second half and scored from the forward drive from the lineout and the conversion meant they were only one point adrift The second half developed into a bit of a stalemate but the visitors did get a fourth try to seal their win instead of the expected attack from the forwards the ball was shifted through the hands quickly right and they got Dunford on the overlap on the wide outside and he wasn’t going to be caught Penrith were worthy winners but had a much harder struggle than they might have expected with some old hands keeping them honest and some youthful pace The final score was Wigton 2nds 16 Penrith 2nds 24 Taste Cumbria in Wigton at the weekend has been hailed a success it was Taste Cumbria’s first event of the year the neighbouring Market Hall hosted Wigton road left the alleged victim with a gaping leg wound and needing surgery Police issued a public appeal for information last Monday after officers attended an incident in the town which was reported to have happened at around 2.15am The victim suffered a significant leg injury — consistent with a stab wound — in the area of Kirkland Road The injured man was taken to hospital and initially detained in a stable condition 30-year-old Louie Holmes appeared at Carlisle Magistrates Court One alleges that he unlawfully and maliciously wounded a man with intent to cause him grievous bodily harm A second charge alleges the illegal possession of a bladed article — a knife — in Kirkland Meadows in Wigton date of birth and to say he was currently of no fixed abode Prosecutor Lee Dacre alleged that the injured man had been stabbed with a kitchen knife suffering a 10cm gaping wound to his right thigh There had been a substantial amount of blood at the scene An ambulance was called and the injured man was taken to hospital where he had undergone surgery Magistrates committed Holmes’ case to Carlisle Crown Court He is due to appear there in front of a judge on March 10 In the meantime he was remanded in custody after an application for bail was refused by the bench A 27-year-old man arrested in connection with last Monday’s incident on behalf of Cumberland Council and the Carlisle Southern Link Road (CSLR) project will commence construction works at Newby West Roundabout from April to August 2025 These works are essential for the development of a new larger roundabout designed to improve traffic capacity and connectivity From the 22 April 2025 Peter Lane will close at the Newby West roundabout end access is maintained for residents via Dalston Road From the 28 April 2025 the A595 North from Newby West Roundabout into Carlisle will be closed to all traffic The traffic management plan for these works includes the following key measures: All traffic from the A595 South and West Cumbria will be directed onto the A689 via the newly constructed southwest quadrant of the new Newby West Roundabout All Traffic from Carlisle on the A595 heading out of Carlisle will be diverted towards the A689 and then onto the A595 via the newly southwest quadrant of the new Newby West Roundabout This approach will enable the completion of the remaining three quadrants of the new Newby West Roundabout to be completed within a single block closure of around 16-weeks The new Newby West Roundabout will be significantly larger than the existing one to accommodate future traffic demands Due to the scale of work required which includes changing the level (height) of the new roundabout temporary road closures and other traffic management measures are unavoidable The project team have carefully planned the construction phases to minimise the disruption wherever possible and undertaken as much advanced works as possible The programme is as short as possible but if all goes well it is achievable we will need to close the route completely It is not possible to maintain access through so we will do the work that requires a total closure during a series of nighttime closures the only suitable route for HGVs to take is via Keswick non-HGVs however will be able to travel via Dalston Once these dates can be confirmed further notice will be given We recognise the impact of these works on residents and commuters and we are committed to keeping the community informed throughout the project We are also closely coordinating with other ongoing city centre works to minimise disruptions Bi-weekly updates will be posted on to the dedicated Carlisle Southern Link Road Facebook page please contact the project team at
