During the consultation in September and October 2024 over 1,800 people accessed the online survey with most respondents living in Witney or West Oxfordshire The results showed general support for the proposals Respondents appreciated the plans' focus on enhancing the town centre as a welcoming enjoyable place that preserves Witney’s history and character; supports local businesses’; and promotes safer the plans will be presented for statutory consultation in early 2025 with construction anticipated to begin in summer 2025 View the report For more information about this release contact the Oxfordshire County Council communications team on 01865 323870 or email press.office@oxfordshire.gov.uk Click Sign up to hear from us and receive the latest news and updates in our fortnightly newsletter This Spring parkrun and Vitality have been promoting walking at parkrun and having had a busier running week than normal this week was an ideal opportunity to offer a helping hand as a "parkwalker" The role of parkwalker is firstly to raise visibility that you're welcome to walk at parkrun and with a natty new blue hi-vis vest emblazoned with Vitality logos you certainly stand out Then your volunteer role is about being a friendly and welcoming face to people who have come along to walk I went along to Malcolm's First Timer & Tourist Welcome where he took 81 people through the ins and outs of Witney parkrun including 31 who were about to do their first ever parkrun and change their weekends forever For Rachel's RD briefing I found Michael who was also parkwalking today and I held the "You Can Walk With Us" paddle aloft with the aim of catching the eyes not only of today's walkers but also of people who might think "Ooh Maybe I can get mum/dad/Bob at work/Betty next door along next week" next week parkrun and Vitality are attempting to get the most people walking at parkrun EVER families and neighbours who would love parkrun but say they're not runners As Rachel was nearing the end of the briefing I was still without a walking buddy so I pondered some tactics - Michael was already chatting to a walker (Sheila, who I recognised from a few weeks ago as the keenly generous lady from West Witney Bowls Club who'd shepherded tired parkrunners toward the sustenance of free cake and coffee in their clubhouse) and our Tailwalkers Chris & Val would be accompanying whoever wanted to go slowest so I decided to begin briskly and then float back to whoever was following with fingers crossed to find someone to natter with wearing a newly-familiar blue & red jacket sporting a lamb & flag logo bowls and a cheeky competitive edge that would see Kevin hunting a time quicker than his first parkrun from last week The conversation twisted and turned just like the Witney course and Kevin noted how company made the distance fly by; when you're talking Walking at a parkrun with a lapped course like Witney also provides opportunity to cheer on the runners as they pass This provides an unusual opportunity of trying to recognise people's back as they fleetingly say hello and well done on their way past Embarking on the second big loop means no more passing runners but still the same friendly bellringing volunteers to accompany our chatter A total of 32 people this morning got the feel good factor that volunteering at parkrun can offer After crossing the line Kevin & I shared thank yous; he was grateful for the company and I was grateful for the stories he shared - and even more grateful when he told the smiling barcode scanner what a good listener I was especially as - unbeknownst to Kevin - that scanner was my wife one of the things we hadn't talked about was what time Kevin was trying to beat so it was only when the results came out that I saw that Kevin had succeeded in his goal knocking more than 3 minutes off his time from his first parkrun last week Congratulations to the other 46 of you who also ran jogged or walked around our course faster than ever before the funnel and all visible trace of this magically friendly event were gone but the positive impact of over 300 friends and strangers coming together will thankfully last much longer It’s an unusual location for a new cafe, a business centre in the suburban streets of Witney housing numerous local companies.
