overseeing a rise in form for the Cardinals Following a difficult start to the campaign Woking opted to make a change in the dugout with Michael Doyle being dismissed and former York City boss Ardley subsequently lost just one of his first 17 games in charge to guide the club away from the drop zone Since that sole defeat – coming against former club York – the Cards went on to enjoy a further seven-game unbeaten run prior to successive defeats against Barnet and Wealdstone but have since remained unbeaten again in their last eight league games losing only in the FA Trophy semi-final against rivals Aldershot Town the Cards have assembled a squad with enough quality to get by at this level The likes of William Jääskeläinen has established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the division behind a defence that includes the long-serving Dan Moss Timi Odusina and former U’s loanee Chin Okoli who has massively bolstered the Woking backline after joining on loan from Millwall in January The trio are shielded by the likes of Dale Gorman Jamie Andrews and Olatunji Akinola and flanked by the likes of Dion Kelly-Evans while Adam Chicksen’s early return to Notts County will have proven to be a blow for the Cards after appearing 26 times for the club Ardley’s backline has certainly been a key part of their form with Woking being one of the lowest goalscorers in the league The recent signing of Josh Osude from Hashtag United looks to be an exciting attempt to add additional firepower to their frontline alongside Aiden O’Brien and the returning Inih Effiong but they have largely had to rely on the goals from Harry Beautyman from midfield and Sam Ashford Lewis Walker (4) and Mattew Ward (4) scoring just nine goals between them The Surrey-based outfit now make the short trip to Sutton looking to end the campaign in a positive manner with hopes of a return to the top end of the National League table next season Woking have spent their entire history in non-league including a decade at step one – minus a single season in the National League South in 2018/19 – and have largely had to endure mid-table finishes aside from a fourth place finish under Darrell Sarll in 2023 there will certainly be a feel-good factor at the minute for the Cards who have enjoyed a successful start to life under Ardley Former York City boss Neal Ardley replaced the outgoing Michael Doyle back in December and sparked an outstanding run of form that has guided the Cards away from the relegation zone Ardley notably turned out over 200 times for Wimbledon FC during the 1990s enjoying a successful 11-year career with the club before moving to Watford in 2002 where he racked up a further 111 appearances for the Hornets He later finished his career with spells at Cardiff City and Millwall Looking to kick-start a career in management Ardley returned to Cardiff in a coaching capacity when he took over the Bluebirds’ academy and aided the development of the likes of Joe Ralls and Theo Wharton who both went on to appear for first team Ardley returned to Wimbledon when he took over his former club’s successor and went on to enjoy a stellar six-year stint at the helm in which he guided the club into League One with his first ever trophy in management when the Wombles won the League Two play-off final in 2016 After navigating the third tier for the first time in the club’s history Ardley established the Dons with a handful of mid-table finishes before departing in 2018 by mutual consent He was unable to prevent the Magpies from dropping into the National League though and despite reaching the play-offs and FA Trophy semi-final was dismissed from his role towards the end of the 2020/21 campaign with County finding themselves 14 points behind league leaders Sutton Ardley would remain in the fifth tier though taking over at Solihull Moors the following summer where he again experienced a promotion charge with the 52-year old guiding the club to their second-highest finish in their history in third before losing to Grimsby Town in the play-off final History would then repeat itself for Ardley who followed up a play-off appearance with a mid-table finish the following campaign and he subsequently exited Damson Park in June 2023 but Ardley lasted just five months in charge at the LNER Community Stadium and returned to management almost a year later when he was named as Doyle’s successor at Woking This has seen him enjoy a far more successful time of it losing only one in his first 17 matches in charge at the Laithwaite Community Stadium and has since lost a total of four games to see the Cards rise to 15th in the Vanarama National League table Harry Beautyman is a player who is no stranger to Sutton supporters and he will be hoping he can recover from a recently acquired injury in time to make a return to Gander Green Lane for the first time since departing last summer The former U’s midfielder has been a mainstay in the heart of Woking’s midfield throughout the campaign and is currently their top scorer with ten goals in 32 appearances Beautyman gained experience on loan at St Albans City and Hastings United at the start of his career before linking up with the U’s for the first time in 2011 The midfielder went on to enjoy a two-year stint in South London scoring 24 goals in 105 games as well as winning the Supporters’ Club Player of the Year award in his first season topping off his fine form in amber with a call-up to the England C squad Beautyman subsequently joined Welling United in 2013 before moving on loan to Peterborough United a year later and soon saw the deal made permanent after impressing for the Posh in his maiden campaign in the Football League He remained at London Road for a further season before embarking on stints at Northampton Town and Stevenage which preceded a highly anticipated return to Gander Green Lane in 2018 His second spell saw him cement himself as a U’s legend going on to appear over 200 times across the next seven years with his most notable individual campaign coming in 2019/20 where he notched 17 goals from midfield which saw him voted Club Player of the Year Players’ Player of the Year and Supporters’ Club Player of the Year as well as earning him inclusion in the National League Team of the Season He subsequently played a key role in Sutton’s promotion to the Football League for the first time in their history with a title-winning campaign the following season and went on to rack up almost 100 League Two appearances for the club A move across Surrey saw Beautyman make the switch to Woking where he has become a key part of the team under both Michael Doyle and Neal Ardley Two early goals were enough to seal victory in Surrey with Sutton United overcoming Woking with a narrow win Lewis Simper’s first goal for the club gave the U’s the lead after just 12 minutes in fortuitous fashion with his low strike from distance taking a huge deflection which wrong-footed William Jääskeläinen and flew into the back of the net to break the deadlock with Jeremy Sivi doubling their lead five minutes later with a superb volley from the edge of the box Substitute Tom Leahy halved the deficit with a little over 15 minutes to go when he got on the end of Deon Moore’s cross Michael Doyle’s side were unable to come from behind with the U’s making it four games unbeaten Lennie Dennis joined Sutton in 1985 in an attempt to replace the prolific Micky Joyce and went on to spearhead the attack alongside Paul McKinnon After previously experiencing low-key spells with Bromley and Dulwich Hamlet Dennis contributed to the retention of the Isthmian League title in his first season winning promotion into the Conference with 32 goals later featured in the team that beat Coventry City in the FA Cup Third Round in 1989 Dennis was also recognised for his performances with a call-up to the Jamaica squad in 1988 gaining one international cap in a World Cup qualifier against the United States Having become a crucial part of the team under Barrie Williams a broken leg against Barnet became a key factor in the club’s relegation in 1991 and he later left for spells with Welling United and Woking before returning to Sutton to accumulate a total of 144 goals in just 264 appearances Throwing beachballs while jumping on massive trampolines, learning how to use karate to defend ourselves, zooming round an inflatable obstacle course, all capped with flying down water slides – it could only be the Woking District Cub Scouts Activity Evening 2025! Some 139 Cubs from across the Woking District came together for five hours of fun activities at Woking Leisure Centre and Pool in the Park. All the Cubs had a chance to take part in four activities. There was trampolining in the main hall, which included the chance to throw beach balls at each other. The Cubs had the opportunity to explore the Inflatazone, featuring a fun obstacle course, two massive slides and a freefall jump onto a huge crash mat. There was also time for games in the soft play, when the eight to ten-and-a-half year old Cubs could pretend to be toddlers again. Finally, Cubs enjoyed learning something new, with an opportunity to practise a few defensive karate moves, as well as make some loud noises when doing so! The evening was capped off with an hour in Pool in the Park, with the lazy river and the water slides very popular. There were many highlights – meeting new friends, trying new activities and getting lots of exercise. Despite all those highlights, the most popular part of the evening might have been the pre-swim Kit Kat and Twix provided by the Leaders! Hopefully something which will be repeated when we return for the Woking District Cub Scouts Activity Evening 2026! Jan Parker (Woking District Cub team leader) said: "We are lucky in Woking to have access to such great facilities and the Cubs love being able to try a number of different sports. Thank you to the Woking Leisure Centre and Pool in the Park staff, the instructors from GKR Karate and the wonderful Woking Cub Leaders for a brilliant evening." Lewis Walker gave Woking an early lead when the Cards broke quickly and forced Jack Sims to deny Josh Osude’s initial effort, but the ball fell into the path of Walker who tapped the ball over the line from a few yards out to send Woking into the interval ahead. Sutton United enjoyed a dominant spell at the start of the second half though, and drew level when Lewis Simper’s corner was cleared as far as Ashley Nadesan, who kept the chance alive and swung the ball back into the danger zone where Harry Ransom headed goalward, with Wadham popping up at the far post to nod the U’s back into the game, and was enough to seal a point against the Cards. A draw with Woking sees Sutton end the 2024/25 campaign 12th in the Vanarama National League table, with preparations already starting ahead of the new season according to Head Coach Steve Morison. Morison made four changes to the side that lost the National League Cup Final last time out, and in search of a swift response, opted to bring captain Tyler French, Alex Woodyard, Dillon De Silva and Eduino Vaz back into the starting XI. With a place in the top half up for grabs, it was Woking who came out the blocks quickest and saw Sutton’s backline called into action inside the opening minute, with Osude getting in behind and being denied by French. This would be nothing more than a warning sign though, and the Cards drew first blood moments later when Osude again broke away, first being denied by Sims but he could only parry the ball into the path of Walker, who tapped over the line with the goal gaping. Nonetheless, Sutton showed a positive response and produced their first chances of proceedings, with Lewis Simper twisting inside and out of the Woking defence before sliding the ball through to Will Davies – who was unveiled as the Supporters’ Club Player of the Season prior to kick-off – who was denied by an intervention from former U Chin Okoli. This was then followed by a couple of chances from distance as Vaz fired a free kick just wide of the target before Woodyard struck an effort wide via a deflection, either side of a chance at the other end for Sam Ashford who fired wide from close range. Sutton then saw their best chance of the half so far fall to Nadesan, who forced Ollie Webber into an outstanding fingertip stop to divert his header onto the crossbar and over, with Webber’s opposite number then being called into action moments later to produce a superb save of his own, getting in the way of a Jamie Andrews effort from point blank range. The U’s continued to push though, with Davies trying his luck from distance and drilling an effort over the crossbar, before Woking had the ball in the net for a second time when a whipped cross from Osude met the head of Ashford who glanced his effort past Sims, but the celebrations in the away end were cut short by the offside flag. This gave Sutton a lifeline, with Nadesan volleying just wide of the target before De Silva sent a venomous strike from the edge of the box that seemed to cannon off Davies, and was followed by a low effort from Simper that trickled past the far post. Simper then tried his luck from distance when he attempted to catch Webber off his line, but could only watch as his effort flew just wide. With the clock ticking towards the interval, Sutton will have wanted to go into the break on level terms and had just enough time for one last opportunity. Vaz sent a pinpoint delivery towards Davies who’s header was denied by Webber, although the assistant’s flag was up anyway, and saw the U’s head into the break one down. With Sutton looking for a response after the restart, Tunji Akinola had to be alert to produce a crucial last-ditch challenge to prevent the U’s from levelling just moments after the restart, and continued to up the ante with Vaz charging forward and forcing Tariq Hinds into a high clearance to prevent Nadesan from pouncing on the low ball. De Silva then came close himself, intercepting a misplaced pass before combining with Simper, who returned the favour and teed up the Sri Lanka international who fired just over the crossbar. Okoli had previously gone close to scoring against his former club when he showed some good strength and nice feet to bulldoze his way through to the Sutton defence and fire a tame effort down the throat of Sims, and Matt Ward had an opportunity of his own a similar position when he combined with Dan Moss down the right flank, with Ward eventually firing over the crossbar. This preceded Sutton’s first change of the afternoon as Woodyard was replaced by Kain Adom, and this seemed to inject plenty of energy into proceedings, with the on-loan Gateshead man instantly finding space to send a low ball into the danger area. Sutton did soon take advantage of their newfound dominance though, with Harry Ransom heading Nadesan’s delivery onto Wadham, who nodded in at the far post to level the score. Morison’s side then came ever so close to taking the lead, with Simper forcing Webber into a strong save, but the Woking goalkeeper could only parry the ball into the path of De Silva who’s rebound hits the post. Davies then received a third bite of the cherry, but saw his effort trickle just wide. Woking will have been determined to restore their advantage though, and almost made Sutton pay when Osude got in behind and drilled a low effort across the face of goal, shortly before Ward’s effort cannoned off Topallaj. Double changes in both dugouts were then made in search of a late winner, with Nana Boateng and Hayden Muller being introduced in place of Vaz and De Silva, while Frank Vincent and Inih Effiong entered the fray in place of Ward and Ashford, with Neal Ardley looking to cement Woking’s top half finish. This was followed by another switch by Morison, with French forced to go off and was replaced by Ryan Jackson, moments before Nadesan headed a deep free Simper free kick over the crossbar. Six minutes of added time then afforded both sides one last roll of the dice, with Osude breaking away and rounding Sims, with no one able to keep up with the action and meant his low ball across goal was easily cleared. Sutton then went up the other end with Simper sending a powerful shot that was well saved by Webber at the death, and meant the U’s signed off for the season with a draw. for fans to celebrate the sci-fi franchise Originating from the pun "May the Fourth be with you", it began in 1977 and has since been embraced by Disney and by Lucasfilm the production company founded by Star Wars creator George Lucas While the day is celebrated by fans of all stripes some Star Wars enthusiasts once took their fandom a step further – by identifying as Jedi Knights on the national census the movement took off as both a cultural in-joke and a tongue-in-cheek nod to the spiritual weight fans saw in the Jedi philosophy What started as a grassroots internet campaign soon turned into a surprisingly widespread response across the UK A forceful 390,100 people in England and Wales wrote in "Jedi" as their religion in the 2001 census but this more than halved to 176,600 in the 2011 survey The most recent census for 2021 showed less than 1,600 people said they were Jedi Knights across the two nations – wiping out the Jedi Order Due to the dramatic decline and the cohort not meeting the minimum threshold the Office for National Statistics did not publish figures for Jedi Knights in the latest survey The group is instead lumped into the "No Religion: no religion" subcategory alongside people who claimed "Heavy Metal" was their religion 2011 Census data showed 346 people in Woking wrote in Jedi as their religion Imitating the most optimistic national scenario – where 1,599 people identified as a Jedi – it would mean the estimated number of Jedi Knights in the area fell to just three people in 2021 While the trend of identifying as a Jedi began in the 2001 Census as a joke for many there are others who believe in the philosophy even sought charitable status in the UK in 2015 the Charity Commission ruled it did not meet the criteria under UK charity law The commission said in its report that Jediism lacked the "necessary spiritual or non-secular element" Despite the census figures turning to the Dark Side the Star Wars franchise is still expanding The second season of Andor on Disney+ – a critically acclaimed prequel to the movie Rogue One – has generated rave reviews since its release last month And Marvel’s eagerly awaited Star Wars comic book series will be released on May 7 and Han and show fans what happened after the Return of the Jedi With the franchise continuing to grow 48 years on from the first film there is a new hope the their place in the Isuzu FA Trophy final for the very first time on Saturday coming from behind to beat local rivals Woking 2-1 in a nerve-racking and incident filled encounter at the EBB Stadium one red card and over fifteen minutes of second-half injury time eventually all culminated in Jack Barham’s header at the death finally earning the Shots their maiden trip to Wembley Stadium Tommy Widdrington named a predictably strong lineup for this all-important clash Jack Barham and Tyler Frost among others returned to the starting eleven After the game kicked off to thunderous noise from all corners of the ground it was the visitors produced the first shot on target A quick free-kick played Inih Effiong into space on the left hand side before unleashing a shot high to the middle of the goal Marcus Dewhurst making a fine save to push it out for a corner An understandably cagey start saw very little goal-mouth action the Shots showed signs of growing into the game with pinpoint long-passing from Dan Ellison among others and threatening link up play from Jones’ Aaron and Ryan The latter found himself in on goal after a defensive error though a crucial recovery tackle from Timi Odusina saved the Cards’ blushes A clash of heads between Aaron Jones and Lewis Walker saw a brief stoppage in play former shot Inih Effiong produced a heart-in-mouth moment for the East Bank as he met a cross from right with a speculative backheeled volley Aldershot were presented with a golden opportunity to open the scoring just after the half-hour mark Cameron Hargreaves’ pass near the edge of the box was intercepted but miscontrolled by Dale Gorman allowing Josh Barrett to pounce upon the loose ball The forward drove into the box a struck across goal with a powerful left-footed effort and while Will Jaaskelainen got down well to save Having recently scored from the spot against Ebbsfleet Woking’s Finnish keeper continued his cup heroics but had little to show for it other than audacious bicycle kick attempt from Josh Barrett on the edge of the area an altercation in the Aldershot box between Theo Widdrington and Harry Beautyman saw Woking’s number seven shown a red card While the nature of the offence was unclear to most Widdrington’s obvious discomfort suggested a cheap shot from the Cards’ number seven this seemingly spurred on both the travelling support and squad Jamie Andrews played a high-arching cross from right to the back-post which met the head of Lewis Walker to put the visitors into a surprise lead Ryan Jones produced a typical charge into the left of the opposition box His squared ball zipped into a threatening area but agonisingly failed to find any red and blue shirt a combination of strength and technique allowed Effiong to jink through the back line though his shot sailed well wide of Marcus Dewhurst’s goal good work in possession from Widdrington allowed him to tee up midfield partner Cameron Hargreaves for a shot 25-yards from goal but deflected off of a Woking hand just as it entered the area After severe remonstration from the East Bank the referee pointed to the spot once for the second time in the match and forced a significant waiting period before the kick could take place though the experienced Henry was not to be perturbed striking true into the top-right corner to level the scoring as relentless pressure from the hosts followed Strikes from Josh Barrett and James Henry failed to beat the low block though the Shots were finally letting their man-advantage tell though the Bolton-born keeper held it well Will Armitage thought he might have scored the all-important winner after he leapt highest to Ryan Jones’ corner though the powerful nod went just over the Woking net Ryan Jones yet again tore down the left hand side against a tired looking Woking back-line His floating cross seemingly took years to come back down it found the head of the incoming Jack Barham who nodded home to score THE
