Play Brightcove videoStaff at Yateley Industries have been talking exclusively to ITV News Meridian's Mel Bloor
A Hampshire charity that employs dozens of disabled people says it's fighting for survival due to delayed payments from the Government's Access to Work Plus scheme
Yateley Industries claims it's around £150,000 out of pocket
which has been owed to them since October last year
The charity was set up in 1937 to give people with disabilities as much independence as possible
It currently employs 58 people at its supported factory which offers light assembly hand packing and shrink wrapping
The factory relies on funding to cover the cost of things like specialist equipment and support staff
said: "We've tried all sorts of diplomatic interventions to try and get them to pay us but it's like shouting into the darkness
"They come back with arbitrary rejections of claims that we've made and the paperwork has increased four-fold."
"At the end of this month (March 2025)
we might have to consider closing the factory
so 58 disabled people could potentially be out of work."
Some staff have worked at the factory for more than 30 years
Cheryl Littlefield is a Job Coach at the factory
is paid for through Access to Work funding
She said: "If the factory were to close
it would have a huge impact on all the guys who work here
they come in with a huge smile on their face
and it's a very relaxed atmosphere."
"To take all of that away from them would really affect their wellbeing."
A spokesperson for the Department for Work and Pensions said: “Helping people into good work and financial independence is at the heart of our Plan for Change
but the broken social security system we inherited is failing people who can and have the potential to work
as well as the people it’s meant to be there for
"As part of our reforms, we are consulting on the future of Access to Work
and encourage people to have their views and voices heard on how they think the programme could be improved.”

Hampshire Police are appealing for information after a car was found on fire near Yateley.
Police were called by the fire service at around 11pm on 31 October to a report of a car on fire in the woodland just off Vigo Lane.
It is believed the car was involved in a collision where it left the road, hit a tree and then collided with an electricity sub station, causing a fire to ignite.
Enquiries are ongoing to establish the identity of the vehicle and its driver.
At this time, they believe the car is a Range Rover with black alloy wheels, red brake calipers and a twin exhaust.
If you were driving this vehicle Police are asking you to come forward. They also would like to speak to anyone who was driving in the area that evening with dash cam footage of any Range Rovers.

After provisionally the warmest May Day on record in the UK
higher than average temperatures will subside over the weekend
Environment Agency
Updated: 08:20 (UTC+1) on Tue 6 May 2025
it will turn increasingly cloudy from off the North Sea
Some bright or sunny spells developing by evening
Staying dry with some lengthy clear skies overnight
Turning chilly with a touch of grass frost in places
Largely dry with variable amounts of cloud and bright or sunny spells on Wednesday
with variable amounts of cloud and bright or sunny spells throughout the period
Dry across the vast majority of the UK with clear or sunny spells but also some patchy cloud
Cloud will likely thicken across the far north and northwest during the weekend with some outbreaks of rain for a time
There is also a small risk of some heavy showers in the far south or southwest
high pressure will be dominant across the UK
This will bring predominantly fine and dry weather for the majority of places
Temperatures are likely to be slightly above normal for the time of year
although there is a chance of some cold nights
Fairly typical weather for the time of year is most likely through this period
fine and dry weather is more likely to dominate although this will be interspersed with occasional spells of rain and showers

Eighty three juniors played in Camberley Town Youth Football Club vs Yateley Silverbacks Basketball Club across four sports
£3,000 will go to Farnborough Sands
and £1,500 to both Camberley Town Youth FC and Yateley Silverbacks
The inaugural event was run by Amazon #1 bestselling book and business I don’t work Fridays by Martin Norbury
Over 80 young players participated in the challenge
where Camberley Town took on Yateley Silverbacks across four age groups (under 8s
The overall winning team was Camberley Town
with a trophy presented to their Chairman Barrie Funnell
Sponsors Martin and Jacki Norbury of I don’t work Fridays matched the £3,000 raised from the event and fun day
making a total of £6,000 for the teams and charity involved
“It was a fantastic day for the clubs and the charity
with an amazing atmosphere and great sporting competition and kids trying out new experiences
"The money raised will go a long way helping hundreds of basketball players
but more importantly all those bereaved parents that Farnborough Sands support
"We’re so grateful for our share of the proceeds and for 'I don’t work Fridays' for their additional financial contribution
It’s an expensive business running a club with sixteen teams
so the money we receive will be put towards our U10
“We’re overwhelmed by the level of generosity and support for our inaugural 4x4x4 charity fun day
you’re unable to be a parent to them like you had planned and imagined
so volunteering your time feels like a way of actively keeping their memory alive
And being able to support other families via Sands
who may find themselves in such an unimaginable situation
“Both Camberley Town FC and Yateley Silverbacks clubs do so much for our twins
not only giving them an outlet to have fun
We know this money will be well invested by each club into their communities.”

A remarkable manor house building at Yateley has been let to an independent school
has been let on a 25-year lease to Hurst Lodge School
either for freehold sale or on a leasehold basis for a range of uses including office
said: “We spoke to a wide range of potential purchasers and tenants as this building is so unique and has so much potential
“The residential conversion route seemed the most likely on the face of it but its listed status and configuration put too much of a value constraint on its development
“In the end the most serious and high value interest came from a number of educational use parties
In the end it was Hurst Lodge School that prevailed and we are delighted to have completed this letting to them and look forward to it becoming a key centre for them in the years ahead.”
owner of Yateley Hall said: “We have owned this building for 30 years
We originally renovated it from a dilapidated state to its current high standard and condition
when it became vacant recently we recognised that the office market had changed and looked at a range of options
“Campbell Gordon pushed the building hard to all the key occupier and buyer target groups
They persisted through the uncertainties of the pandemic and ultimately achieved a great result
so we are delighted to have secured the Hurst Lodge School as tenants for the next 25 years.”

Wonderful to know Yateley Hall will be a school once again
My childhood years were spent here when it was Yateley Hall Convent Preparatory School
While much of the land has long since been sold off (and this started in the late 70s)
it’s still a beautiful and gracious setting
Hopefully a new generation of pupils will be just as happy there
for almost a year I became a boarder at Yateley Hall Convent Preparatory School and remember it (and the haha) well
In June 1947 my family emigrated to Johannesburg as post-WW2 settlers
We have since produced three South African-born generations
I worked for a marketing company called Outbound based at the amazing Yateley Hall
It stands on a very old site and is therefore very haunted by past residents of which I had first hand experience on the top floor
In the late 1950’s I attended Yateley Hall as a first year student
At the time Catholic nuns were my teachers
In October of 2025 I would like to return for a visit
to attend the unveiling of the Project Children Peace Campus in County Monaghan for its fiftieth anniversary of peace work in Northern Ireland
I have been their Colorado coordinator for twenty-six years

Hartley Wintney and Rushmoor firefighters were called shortly before 21:30 last night after a car left the road and collided with a tree on the A30 in Yateley
One casualty was extricated by crews before being taken onto hospital by South East Coast Ambulance Service paramedics and treated for minor injuries
Crews returned to stations following the stop message at 22:19
Make sure you drive to arrive and follow our road safety tips
Firefighters evacuated 15 people from seven nearby properties in Stroud Lane due to the risk posed by the flames
Heavy smoke prompted a plea for residents to close their windows and doors
Fire Control took multiple 999 calls from around 11:30am (14 July) after flames could be seen in the area around Yateley Common and at the height of the incident more than 60 firefighters were on scene
Our crews were assisted by colleagues from Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service and Surrey Fire and Rescue after the fire broke out
“Our crews turned up to really arduous conditions
The flames were really high and the fire was spreading really fast
“At one point the fire jumped over a path due to the radiated heat and a significant area of the common has been damaged
“There was a real risk to properties and wildlife and our firefighters worked tirelessly to hit the fire hard and get it surrounded.”
Land Rovers were used to access the site and firefighters battled through hot and challenging conditions to make good progress
the fire – which covered an area of around 35 hectares – was surrounded and the incident was scaled down shortly after 5pm
with those who were evacuated allowed back into their homes
Crews remain on scene to dampen down the area
“The dry and very hot weather conditions
increases the risk of fires like this from spreading out of control very quickly and becoming very severe
we don’t know what caused the fire and we might never know
“But what we do know is that barbecues
discarded cigarettes and glass bottles can cause these types of fires
“An extreme heat alert is in place for the weekend
and an amber wildfire alert has been issued
so I’d ask people to be extra careful
call 999 immediately and stay away.”
Crews from across Hampshire were involved including those from Alton
UPDATE 15 July 08:00: Two fire engines and two Land Rovers remained on scene throughout the night to patrol and monitor hotspots
Callers reported heavy smoke in the area overnight and those living nearby should be aware that smoke is likely to be an issue for the next four or five hours
Relief crews have been arranged and are now investigating larger hotspots as daylight is allowing firefighters to access harder-to-reach areas
UPDATE 15 July 17:00: Firefighters have remained on scene throughout the day
with crews on hand to deal with the reignition of multiple hotspots
Five fire engines and five off-road vehicles have been there and crews have worked hard to ensure the fire hasn’t spread any further
There is now minimal smoke and fire cover will be scaled down overnight and reassessed in the morning
UPDATE 17 July: Firefighters have revisited the site throughout the last three days to monitor and deal with hotspots
Crews from across Hampshire have been mobilised and used jets
The stop message was received at 19:41 today
The Hampshire club recently announced the partnership with Amazon #1 bestselling business book I don’t work Fridays by Martin Norbury for the 2023/2024 season
This is the fourth consecutive season that I don’t work Fridays has committed to helping Yateley Silverbacks both financially as well as with business and marketing support
the sponsorship and support helps the club run over 14 hours of training every week
The investment will also help the club work with adults and youths in attaining their coaching badges and referee qualifications
and opens up opportunities for basketball tournaments and tours
Yateley Silverbacks has expanded from seven to 16 teams
including two new U10s teams and strengthening all adult squads this season
"We’re delighted to be working in partnership with Martin and Jacki of I don’t work Fridays once again
and we can operate safe in the knowledge we can cover all the expenses that come with running an expanding club
as well as continue to invest in the future of our players
“We’re in the fortunate position to be able to support local clubs like Yateley Silverbacks
and four years on from our initial sponsorship
it’s wonderful to see the positive impact our partnership continues to have.”
“The club’s ethos is not just about competition (although playing to win is important!)
but also about fostering a sense of community and camaraderie among its members
"As a family business who helps other entrepreneurs create a business on their own terms
so they have a healthier work-life-balance
"We have so much synergy with Pete and the club; it’s way more than just about bouncing a basketball
and we’re really looking forward to the season ahead!"

Last time you spoke to us was in July last year
How have things been for the store since then
Coming out of the summer into the autumn last year was quite challenging because of the driver shortage and availability issues from the impact of Brexit and Covid
availability improved and that led into a really successful Christmas period
How was Christmas trading compared to 2020
In 2020 it was very controlled because we were limiting the number of customers in the shop
so the trade was spread evenly throughout the day
whereas this year there were much busier periods in the branch
The week after Christmas was a little quieter than we expected
but overall the branch had a fantastic Christmas week itself and beat budget really comfortably
there was a lot of entertaining and turkeys ordered
although that tailed off a little bit towards Christmas as people were staying at home more
panettone and Christmas gifting sold really well
We had some offers on beef which went well
and our £10 bottles of wine are always very popular
What’s the plan moving into 2022? The branch is going to have a refit in the beginning of February and it will last about eight weeks
We were hoping to do it at the end of autumn last year
All the fixturing on the shop floor and the main ambient non-food area will be changed
We’ll also have more space for fruit & veg
And we’re adding a few things such as dry aged beef and chilled wines so we can increase the offer a little bit
We’ll have the Better Together range with John Lewis products in the store as well
In the meantime our shopper noticed that all the Christmas decorations were down? Yes
The team did a brilliant job in clearing stuff through and getting rid of all the old fixturing so that we could start the new year on a nice fresh note
The shop is in a really good place for the refit and the year ahead
How’s availability looking post-Christmas? Most of the Christmas stocks sold through before New Year and the availability was coming back this week
We’ve got a few challenges with the supply of some frozen food (hence the Richmond sausages out of stock)
What have staff absence rates been like in the past few weeks
It was noticeable going into Christmas where people were having booster jabs and having a day or two off because of adverse effects
Then we had a few more positive cases of Covid between Christmas and the new year
There has been a lateral flow test shortage
Are you providing lateral flow tests to colleagues
We do lateral flow testing in the branch if partners can’t get hold of them
We encourage partners to do it twice a week
Are you catering to these trends with specific displays
A lot of our promotions are focused towards healthy eating and our vegetarian and vegan range
There are more offers on the fresher and healthier food items to encourage people to start the new year and embrace a healthy January
The demographic who shop with us are more aware of healthy eating than they used to be
We do have quite a lot of elderly customers
but actually it’s a very mixed-up sort of semi-affluent client demographic
At the end of next week I leave Waitrose after 42 years
We’ve got a new management structure starting up from 16 January
I’ve got another month where I’ll pass on my knowledge and experience to colleagues
So it’s just making sure the team is all prepared for that and finalising the plans for our refit as well
What were the biggest lessons you’ve learned throughout your time as a manager? The biggest thing is to embrace difference
everything continually evolves and there isn’t always necessarily a right or wrong way of doing things
If you can embrace difference in your approach to life and your approach to people
then you engage and get people who will buy into whatever your vision is
What advice would you give to your successor
and it’s by working together as a whole team that makes the atmosphere in the shop feel like an extension of the local community

were joined by the Incident Command Unit and colleagues from Berkshire at Mayflower Drive
They were called at 20:05 on Saturday (11 September) and used 10 breathing apparatus
two jets and three hose reels to tackle the blaze
The garage was 100 per cent affected by fire and there was some smoke damage to the house
The incident began scaling down at midnight and the stop message was received at 01:56
Crews re-inspected the property at 07:00 on Sunday (12 September) and found no hot spots

POTLEY HILL PRESCHOOL: Outdoor area rejuvenated for next academic year
has helped a preschool rejuvenate its outdoor areas ready for the new term. The company offered the school this free service during August to make sure the children would have a safe and pleasant environment for their outdoor learning when they return to school. The team began with artificial grass rejuvenation that involved cleaning and disinfecting the area followed by a wash and power brush
They then completed a full power wash of all the patios and pathways
making them less slippy and more safe for the children
the team completed a thorough wash and clean of the decking area
A member of the team from Potley Hill said: "Team OMC did an excellent job cleaning our astroturf and soft surface at preschool
"The children have so much fun transporting resources
we tend to end up with most of it in the astroturf and the staff find it almost impossible to clean it out with brooms and jetwashers
"They will be so happy to come back at the start of term to such an aesthetically pleasing sight
