— Four former Buchanan County coal miners have filed a class action lawsuit against their former employer
alleging their terminations were in violation of federal law
Timothy Vance and William Stiltner filed the lawsuit in federal court in Abingdon on behalf of themselves and approximately 140 employees who were terminated by Buchanan Minerals on April 28
the company operated six continuous miner units and two longwall units at its Buchanan County mine
the lawsuit alleges the company decided to shut down four of the continuous miner units on April 28
resulting in approximately 140 miners losing their jobs immediately
The miners contend that each unit shut down qualifies as a “plant closure” under the federal WARN Act
which requires employees be given 60 days’ written notice before a plant closure resulting in mass layoffs
The lawsuit seeks back pay and statutory damages for all of the miners who were terminated

loudspeakers and chants as part of a nationwide Hands Off day of protests against the Trump administration
Dan Manweiler of Take Action Southwest Virginia – the group organizing the Abingdon event – said one count showed more than 500 protesters lining the four corners of the intersection between 11:30 a.m
with more arriving through the morning and early afternoon
“Before I got here this morning there were people already here,” said Manweiler
Dozens of signs called for “hands off” Social Security
the Public Broadcasting System and other public and federal agencies and services facing the chopping block of the administration and the Department of Government Efficiency since January
Chants of “86 47” and other slogans — some unrepeatable — filled the air as the crowd lined sidewalks and received dozens of honks in support from passing vehicles for the 90-minute demonstration
One demonstrator held a sign with cartoon penguins – a reference to Trump’s announcement Thursday of tariffs on the penguin-inhabited Heard and McDonald Islands
Other signs included references to immigrants being deported or “disappeared” without due process
or Thursday’s tariff announcement impacting the stock market and people’s retirement savings
“Chai is here today because Elon Musk cut our farm budget,” said farmer Yogev Von Kundra as he watched the demonstration with his goat
“Two USDA grants that we got went on freeze when we were told by this administration that farmers and individuals wouldn’t be impacted by the freeze
Von Kundra said he contacted Ninth District Republican Congressman Morgan Griffith to say something needed to be done about the freeze on USDA funding
“There’s no funding freeze affecting farmers,”” Von Kundra added
“I feel ghastly and I’m here to say what’s going on is impacting us farmers and we need to do something about it.”
Saturday was Take Action’s third Abingdon demonstration since February
and people are worried about the way the administration is moving towards taking over the government,” said Manweiler
“There’s nobody here who’s been paid by anyone else to be here
It’s pretty clear we’re not a bunch of mercenaries
We just want to exercise our civic and social duties.”
Griffith was not expected to attend Saturday’s demonstration
“We’d love to see him here,” said Manweiler
“We’ve got an invitation to him to come to a town hall meeting we’ve scheduled for later this month
I don’t know whether Morgan’s going to make it
Kingsport couple Bill and Caroline Hash and Caroline’s sister Rachel Law were among those waving signs and drawing honks of support from passing traffic
“All the chaos that’s going on the in the country is to me absolutely ridiculous,” said Bill Nash
“This is not so much a protest as an advocacy,” Caroline Nash added
It’s okay to do something different but do it the right way
Get everybody’s input and make a decision collectively.”
holding a sign with egg cartons attached and asking about the price of eggs,” but there’s a right way to deal with it
I feel we’re in the wrong lane altogether.”
Dozens of drivers honked in support as they drove along the rows of demonstrators
“I get my Social Security check each month
I’m worried if I’m going to get it this month,” Sheila Raphael said as she took a breather with her dog Sir Lancelot from waving a “Remember Niemöller” sign – a reference to Martin Niemöller
a Lutheran pastor who survived a concentration camp for his opposition to the Nazi regime
Brothers Danny and Don Hearl — also both Vietnam War Army veterans — joined the protesters
“We’ve got three generations here today,” Don said
referring to his son and grandchild joining the rows of sign-carrying protesters
the brothers were protesting against veterans’ benefit cuts and unconstitutional actions by the administration
“Everybody please get out and attend things like this,” Weber City resident Tim Cox said as he held a sign saying
‘No dictators in the United States of America.’ “I think it makes a big impact on the situation we’re in
We’re really in trouble the way the country is going now
and everybody needs to get out now and keep it from continuing in the direction it’s going.”

(AP) — A woman who pleaded guilty to dressing as a clown and in 1990 murdering the wife of a man she later married was released from prison Saturday
ending a case that has been strange even by Florida standards
was released 18 months after she pleaded guilty to second-degree murder for the shooting of Marlene Warren
Florida Department of Corrections records show
The plea deal came shortly before her trial would have started
who has maintained her innocence even after her plea
But she had been in custody for seven years since her arrest in 2017
and Florida's law in 1990 allowed significant credit for good behavior
It had been expected she would be released in about two years
“Sheila Keen-Warren will always be an admitted convicted murderer and will wear that stain for every day for the rest of her life," Palm Beach County State Attorney Dave Aronberg said in a statement Saturday
has said she only took the plea deal because she would be released in less than two years and had been facing a life sentence if convicted at trial
Keen-Warren has been released from prison and is returning to her family
she did not commit this crime," he said Saturday in a text message
and his friends were at home when they said a person dressed as a clown rang the door bell
“How nice,” the clown pulled a gun and shot her in the face before fleeing
Palm Beach County sheriff's investigators had long suspected Keen-Warren in the slaying
but she wasn't arrested until 27 years later when they said improved DNA testing tied her to evidence found in the getaway car
Keen-Warren was an employee of Marlene Warren’s husband
she has been his wife — they eventually moved to Abingdon
where they ran a restaurant just across the Tennessee border
Witnesses told investigators in 1990 that the then-Sheila Keen and Michael Warren were having an affair
costume shop employees identified Sheila Warren as the woman who had bought a clown suit a few days before the killing
And one of the two balloons — a silver one that read
“You’re the Greatest” — was sold at only one store
a Publix supermarket near Keen-Warren's home
Employees told detectives a woman who looked like Keen-Warren had bought the balloons an hour before the shooting
The presumed getaway car was found abandoned with orange
The white Chrysler convertible had been reported stolen from Michael Warren’s car lot a month before the shooting
Keen-Warren and her then-husband repossessed cars for him
Relatives told The Palm Beach Post in 2000 that Marlene Warren
suspected her husband was having an affair and wanted to leave him
But the car lot and other properties were in her name
and she feared what might happen if she did
Mike done it.” He has never been charged and has denied involvement
But Rosenfeld said last year that the state’s case was falling apart
One DNA sample somehow showed both male and female genes
and the other could have come from one out of every 20 women
And even if that hair did come from Keen-Warren
it could have been deposited before the car was reported stolen
He said Marlene Warren's son and another witness also told detectives that the car deputies found wasn’t the killer’s
Aronberg last year conceded that there were holes in the case
saying they were caused by the three decades it took to get it to trial
Michael Warren was convicted in 1994 of grand theft
He served almost four years in prison — a punishment his then-attorneys said was disproportionately long because of suspicions he was involved in his wife’s death
He did not respond to a phone message left for him Saturday
(WCYB) — There is a new Italian restaurant and pizzeria now open in the Abingdon Commons
Semolina Neapolitan pizzeria opened on Monday
Owner Logan Schalk is serving up authentic Neapolitan wood-fired pizza
All of the ingredients are fresh and imported from Naples
He explains that even the dough takes three days to prepare
"Neapolitan has to be registered through the Neapolitan society in Naples for you to carry the name
because it's a strict process in the way the dough is made
the way the ingredients are made and how it's cooked
so instead of having a double stacked oven that gets to only 500 degrees
our pizza gets to 1,100 degrees and it cooks in 90 seconds because of the fire," he said
The dough they use is "Double zero flour" also known as doppio zero or 00 flour
They also use a special tomato sauce which is made from fresh San Marzano tomatoes
"You can taste the woodfire in our pizza," he explained
ad that is one of the main parts of having Neapolitan pizzeria
is you have to use a woodfired oven to get the right texture of the dough," he said
"So as soon as the dough hits the stone the dough is cooked immediately and it starts to rise exactly the way you want it to rise."
Schalk moved to Southwest Virginia after a long career as an executive chef
but decided to open Semolina after missing the taste of goodNeapolitan pizza
and says he's excited for the Southwest Virginia community to try it
and its unlike any pizza you've ever had."
Semolina Neapolitan Pizza is now open Monday-Saturday from 11:00a.m.
The Abingdon Commons is located at 238 W Main St.
