ACUSHNET (WBSM) — A slide at the Pope Park playground in Acushnet is currently out of commission
but for the cutest of reasons: baby bunnies are nestled at its base
Acushnet Animal Control Officer Rebekah Tomlinson told WBSM that the four baby rabbits are healthy and fine where they are
and that they are not in any danger despite their mom’s odd choice of a nesting site at the base of a playground slide
“I spoke with a wildlife rehabber and it is best that we leave them,” she said
“They will be leaving the nest in the next four to five days.”
and children cannot use it until the bunnies leave the nest
“Children can still go in there and utilize the other slide and wings
but they cannot go to this one,” Tomlinson said
Tomlinson said she will be going and checking on the bunnies frequently to make sure they are OK
and the slide will be reopened once they leave the nest
Some residents were wondering if the baby rabbits – called kits – had been abandoned by their mother
since there was never an adult rabbit around them
However, according to A-Z-Animals.com
rabbits only nurse their babies “for about five to 10 minutes per day,” so it’s not uncommon to see babies alone in the nest
The site said Eastern cottontail rabbits “will seek a low-lying area in which they can build a safe nest for their babies,” and it appears the Pope Park playground was exactly what Momma Bunny was looking for in a nesting site
Acushnet's Pope Park playground will be without one of its slides for a few days as a nest of baby bunnies was found at its base.\nRead More

off-again proposal to use $150,000 in Community Preservation grant money to install a 200-foot dock for rowers on the upper Acushnet River may be on again
Councilor Maria Giesta made the motion to take another look
has stated the Acushnet River dock project would open the upper Acushnet River up for public recreational access for the first time in more than three decades
The proposed site is off 720 Belleville Ave.
Aerovox manufactured electrical components
The process used PCBs and chlorinated solvents until the late 1970s
and the site has been part of EPA cleanup efforts
The company declared bankruptcy in 2001 and abandoned the property
The 450,000-square-foot building was razed and the city owns the 10-acre site
“The community has been without safe recreational access to the upper Acushnet River for 30-plus years as it has undergone cleanup efforts by the EPA
the waters are again safe to the public and are open to the 100,000 residents within three miles of the river
There is currently no safe launching point for recreational watercraft,” according to the project application
Recreation and Beaches assistant project manager
said during an earlier meeting on the proposal that the ultimate goal was to build a rowing center at the site
He said the site is also where the New Bedford River Walk will end
The 17,000-foot recreational waterfront path is planned for the upper harbor
along the western bank of the Acushnet River
Laying out a crew competition racecourse on the Acushnet River was also planned in a future phase
Rick Porteus was among those critical of the process
While supporting the idea of a rowing facility
the better site would be in the vicinity of Riverside Park
ACUSHNET — Coming up on April 22, Acushnet will hold its local elections
residents will decide on a Proposition 2½ debt exclusion that would temporarily raise property taxes in order to fund an HVAC upgrade for Acushnet Elementary School
"The project’s aim is to address long-standing issues with poor air quality and excess humidity, which led to mold and prematurely aging infrastructure," explains informational material posted to Acushnet Public Schools' website
"the anticipated net long-term debt requirement is expected to be not more than $3,500,000," taking into account a total of $700,000 being provided through two grants
The total estimated cost of the projects would be $4,200,000
As explained by the materials
a "yes" vote on the ballot question merely "allows the Town to use exempt or excluded debt" toward the project
Approval of the project itself would still be needed at Acushnet's June 20 Town Meeting
where appropriation of a dollar amount would also be put in place
Even if the "no" votes prevail at the polls on Tuesday
the project may still be approved at Town Meeting
"but the debt would be 'regular' or non-exempt debt."
According to Acushnet Public Schools' info
taxes on the average single-family home — with an assessed value of $471,732 — would increase by about $56.61 a year
This is based on the town's current residential tax rate of $10.79 per $1,000 of a property's valuation
Like all Proposition 2½ debt exclusions in Massachusetts
the proposed debt exclusion in Acushnet would only impact tax rates over the lifespan of the debt
not permanently as it would with a Proposition 2½ override

NEW BEDFORD — City councilors changed their minds on a $150,000 proposal to install a 200-foot dock for rowers on the upper Acushnet River off Belleville Avenue through a Community Preservation grant
She was contacted by a group of people in the rowing community
who felt they weren’t included in the decision-making by the New Bedford Department of Parks
which proposed the dock plan in partnership with the New Bedford Rowing Center
She said they had concluded that the Parks
Recreation and Beaches Department had made up its mind who it would be partnering with on the project prior to a public meeting on the proposal
Not a criticism of Community Preservation CommitteeGiesta said
“The Department of Parks and Recreation needs to reach out to these groups and have a sit-down discussion in how they will be included in the Acushnet River Rowing Center Dock project.”
She added she wasn’t criticizing the Community Preservation Committee
“This is not a criticism of you or your decisions regarding funding for all of these projects
The members of the CPC are meticulous and hard working
and I know that they take their job seriously.”
stated the Acushnet River dock project would open the Acushnet River for public recreation access for the first time in more than three decades
The council will be asked to reconsiderShe added
“We received valuable feedback and heard lots of support during public meetings and through our collaboration with the local rowing community
We appreciate the Community Preservation Committee recognizing the need for a safe launching point for recreational watercraft on the Acushnet River and recommending funding for the project.”
She said they had filed a request for reconsideration with the City Council
and hoped “that councilors will approve the CPC’s recommendation and support this project to open a new recreational resource for New Bedford residents.”
The request will be presented at the April 24 city council meeting
Rapoza stated that two public workshops were held to discuss access to the Acushnet River in March 2023 and March 2024
She said two publicly owned sites were considered but that the Belleville Avenue site had ample parking and room to deliver boats by trailer
Rick Porteus was among those critical of the process and had spoken with Giesta prior to the council's decision to deny the project on April 10
“We’re deeply concerned about the process and what it’s leading to,” he said
“The process has been kept away from the community.”

They had been told that it wasn’t buildable in that area because it was within the EPA cleanup site
but he said they had subsequently learned a large portion of the site was considered buildable
It was rowing after whales on the open ocean that created the wealth that gave us the New Bedford that we have
It’s a sport that New Bedford should own and it’s time to claim it

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WLNE) — Detectives with the Massachusetts State Police and New Bedford Police are actively investigating a homicide which occurred off of Acushnet Ave. last night.
At around 10 p.m., New Bedford Police responded to a call in the area of Acushnet Ave. and Griffin Court, according to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office.
Upon arriving at the scene, police located a 19-year-old male in a black Hyundai Sonata parked on the east side of Acushnet Avenue with a gunshot wound in his head.
The vehicle was also found to have multiple bullet holes.
The victim was transported to St. Luke’s Hospital where he was pronounced deceased a short time later.
The investigation into the death is still ongoing and “extremely active.”
ACUSHNET, Mass. (WLNE) — Despite Vice President Kamala Harris earning the overwhelming majority of votes in Massachusetts for the 2024 Presidential Election, a town in Bristol County assembled notable support for President-elect Donald Trump.
The owner of the ‘New England for Trump’ store in Acushnet said the day after the election was one for celebration and record sales.
“It was an awesome day,” owner Frank Joseph said. “I probably did four times what I usually do [in sales].”
75-year-old Joseph said he stayed up all night on Election Day to watch the results roll in and was pleasantly surprised to see the reception the next day.
“It was a very joyous day; they all came in such a good mood,” he said.
Harris earn roughly 61% of the vote in Massachusetts, while Acushnet voted just over 61% in favor of Trump, the largest margin for the President-elect in any Massachusetts community.
“If you look at Acushnet, it has the demographic profile of a typical community that would support Trump in any other part of the country,” Providence College Associate Professor Adam Myers said. “Acushnet is overwhelmingly White, but it’s also overwhelmingly blue collar, or at least non-college educated.”
Trump also showed strides in support from other demographics nationally, including Latino voters.
“There’s definitely signs that certainly groups that have historically been a part of the Democratic coalition have left the Democratic coalition or are leaving it and, under Trump, are moving to the Republicans,” Myers added.
As someone who has supported Trump from the beginning and opened the store years ago, Joseph said seeing such strong local support was meaningful.
“The community really came alive,” he said. “The silent majority has spoken in Acushnet.”

Evan Verissimo has spent his career working with trees
He started off with his own tree company but decided to exit the world of climbing trees and enter the world of carving them
and they had someone on-site carving the logs
I gave it a try and kind of got the feel for it
'I can do that,' and I started doing it," Verissimo said
Verissimo admitted that some of his earlier work doesn't quite reach the level of what he can now achieve with his chainsaw
It's a hard thing to get into and enjoy
but I've always been an artistic person," he said
The Acushnet resident has also tried carving ice but didn’t find it as satisfying
"I prefer working with wood," he said
and I'm still learning," Verissimo said
"I'm learning how to do it quicker and how to use different techniques that I see on YouTube."
The name of Verissimo's business is Kind Tree Carving
and he has jumped into the business with both feet
but I definitely still work out here; we have to make money
Verissimo was working on a carving of a Dartmouth firefighter
The whole process will take roughly two to three weeks and will be sold for $1,500

ACUSHNET, Mass. (WLNE) — Officials announced Thursday that an elderly couple was killed in a tragic Christmas Day fire in Acushnet
Michael Lyonnais said he got a call around 2 a.m
Wednesday that his childhood home on Garfield Street was up in flames
“It was devastating to get that phone call,” Lyonnais said
I’m sorry,’ and I’m thinking he must mean my parents haven’t gotten out of the house.”
Michael was especially close with his father
as the two of them started a contracting business back in 1978 and worked together for more than 20 years
“My father was known for always going the extra mile to help a customer out to get to the finish point of any problem we would run into,” Lyonnais said
Michael’s mother was also a well-known figure around town
“She was very popular at her breakfast joint that she went to faithfully every morning,” Lyonnais said
“She knew the whole crew at the breakfast club
she had a lot of friends there too.”
The couple’s passing has shaken the tight-knit Acushnet community
Neighbors said they knew both Leo and Annette well
adding they were a fixture in the neighborhood for 62 years
“I’m gonna miss them both,” he said
“I was just getting to enjoy them now that I was retired
Officials announced Thursday that they believed the fire was accidental
but the exact cause is still under investigation
Investigators said a wood stove and an electrical outlet with a multiple-prong adapter were found in the area of origin
Acushnet police said shots were fired into a residence Tuesday morning
Officials said the incident happened on Slocum Street around 2:30 a.m
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Acushnet Police Department
ACUSHNET — Coming up on Sept. 30, Acushnet will have its fall special town meeting
where residents will be asked to vote on 17 articles
Here's a quick look at some of the key decisions town meeting attendees will be faced with on Monday
Article 5 will ask town meeting members if they wish to amend the Town Charter by deleting language that bars individuals who have served on governing bodies of the town from accepting town jobs for two years from the end of their term
Aside from those who've served on boards or committees
the changes made by this article would also affect former town moderators and town clerks
According to an explanation for the article included in a copy of the warrant
the current two-year restriction — as entailed by Section 3-1-2 of the charter — "places a draconian constraint on filling vacant positions with competent candidates
"It also is somewhat redundant in that the Massachusetts Ethics Law sufficiently restricts public officials from benefiting or participating in matters that they dealt with as elected officials."
essentially seeking authorization for the Select Board to enter into an "Energy Savings Performance Contract" with solar company Trane
The contract would entail "the turnkey design
commissioning and performance guarantee for specific energy infrastructure and efficiency projects in Acushnet Elementary School and Albert F
According to language included in Article 14
"all or a portion of the funds to pay for the energy infrastructure and efficiency projects will ultimately come from the energy savings guaranteed by Trane...." Article 14 also seeks authorization for the selectmen "to determine if the appropriation is to be contingent on passage of a Proposition 2½ debt exclusion ..
The fall special town meeting is set for Monday, Sept. 30, at 7 p.m. at Albert F. Ford Middle School, 708 Middle Road. A copy of the warrant, as well as other information, can be found on the Acushnet town website, www.acushnet.ma.us

The victims were believed to be a man and a woman in their 80s
according to a statement from the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services
“On behalf of the Acushnet Fire Department

where flames had caused “major structural damage” and partially collapsed the roof
the Department of Fire Services said
Witnesses and first responders told investigators did not hear the sound of smoke alarms when they arrived at the home
It took more than an hour for firefighters to bring the flames under control
One firefighter was brought to a hospital for evaluation but is expected to recover

Officials said the cause of the fire was under investigation by the Acushnet Fire Department, Acushnet Police Department, Massachusetts State Police investigators assigned to the State Fire Marshal’s office
and members of the State Police assigned to the Bristol County District Attorney’s office
with help from the Department of Fire Services’ Code Compliance & Enforcement Unit

"That's actually an issue that I brought up with the DPW Director," he said
"I'm trying to get some clarification on that
I'm hoping their plan is to move that new
blinking stop sign to where the original stop sign is
People aren't sure if they're supposed to stop at both stop signs."
"That's a good question," Chief Carreau said
The intention was good because it's a new blinking sign
but we're hoping to get that rectified as soon as possible."
