A touch of the Caribbean has come to downtown Acworth
with the opening of a restaurant and bar devoted to tropical cuisine
The aptly named Caribbean Vibes opened its doors in early April, taking over a space that formerly housed a craft cocktail bar. An April 9 ribbon cutting drew city officials
Owner and Trinidad native Susan Flynn is pleased at the response to date
but says she’s still scrambling to fully flesh out her staff and pin down entertainment options
but a number of dishes hail from Trinidad and ultimately derive from past Indian subcontinent migration to the country
“I grew up in an old-fashioned Indian home,” she says
“I had to start cooking at a very young age
My mom started teaching me cooking at 13 or 14 years old.”
Flynn says she emigrated to New York in 1995 and started several business ventures before selling them in 2019 and following her brother to metro Atlanta
thinking about a healthy drink stand or a sports bar venture
but ultimately settled on a restaurant to capitalize on the culinary skills learned at her mother’s knee
“The jerk chicken and the oxtail stew is everywhere in the Caribbean and the curries and the roti are mostly Trinidadian,” she explains
she says every few days they whip up something that’s not on the menu “and we put it out there just to see if people like it.” She says that so far all of their “extras” have found favor
Her signature hot sauce has been a solid hit with customers regularly asking for extra portions to take home
The spot is fairly modest inside with official records pegging it at around 11 hundred square feet
along with a bar and a more generously sized deck in the back
She plans to pack a lot of happenings into that space
“because it’s a small restaurant,” but she says they’re looking at live music
a DJ and comedy to engage their customer base
As she puts it ,“Everybody else is doing bingo and trivia so I don’t want to do the same thing
their hours have been fluid so as not to overwork a still-limited staff
but she anticipates settling into a more permanent schedule with a 10:30 a.m
She says the community has been supportive and her spot has had multiple repeat customers
some of which have left five-star ratings on Google and praised both the food and the service
and website in this browser for the next time I comment

Acworth’s Board of Aldermen convened for a remarkably brief city council meeting Thursday evening at Acworth City Hall
The meeting began with a call to order and invocation prayer
Official business started with a review of the National Day of Prayer event held earlier that morning
Hosted in front of Acworth City Hall and featuring worship led by North Cobb Christian School
Following that, a presentation was made in recognition of National Boating Safety Week. Besides recognizing it, the city noted that it would begin a year-round effort to promote boating safety, starting with tomorrow’s Dragon Boat Festival
Coast Guard Auxiliary member Greg Fonzino was also present
discussing some of his duties & responsibilities in promoting boating safety
“ We do a lot of the programs for the recreation boating safety sections of the Coast Guard
We have an auxiliary unit [at Lake Allatoona] & we have one at Lake Lanier”
the board reviewed its consent agenda & the items within
Consent agendas are used to combine multiple non-controversial agenda items
allowing several decisions to be made in much less time
All of the aldermen unanimously voted to approve each item
contributing to the meeting’s short length.
“A tax rate of one mill represents a tax liability of one dollar per $1,000 of assessed value”
One board member discussed the topic more simply for Acworth residents
“City staff will be proposing a budget that keeps the mileage rate at the same 8.95 mils as it was last year”
“The estimated rollback would be the best estimate we could provide that would keep our total collected property taxes the same as it was last year. If the mileage rate is approved as proposed
there would be no increase in the rate at which property owners pay taxes.”
More information about the Board of Aldermen can be found on the city’s website. Details about state millage rate, including breakdowns by county, can be found on the Georgia Department of Revenue website

The city of Acworth has removed advisories along Lake Acworth access points after bacteria tests returned to baseline levels
Testing started Friday after grease clogged a sewer line and caused an overflow near a creek that feeds into the lake.
Test results continue to show an elevated level of bacteria in the lake
Heavy rains over the weekend likely contributed to those elevated readings
The levels remain below the point where a no-swimming advisory would be necessary
People are advised to follow advisories posted by the city of Acworth at access points to Lake Acworth at Cauble and South Shore Parks

and counties have been reconfigured or dissolved. Roswell was once part of Cobb County. The current Fulton County was created first by splitting the original Dekalb County into two counties
then later dissolving Campbell County (south Fulton) and Milton County (north Fulton)
While digging through old newspapers on the Georgia Historic Newspapers database, we came across a story about an attempt by a group of Acworth residents to break away from Cobb County and form a new county along with Kennesaw
slightly reformatted to make it more readable:
2—Citizens of Acworth and the surrounding vicinity are planning to ask the next legislature for a new county
They will base their petition on the grounds that in the section surrounding the town
the road work is seriously neglected due to the fact that it is situated at the corners of four counties
all remote from their respective county seats
They will request the inclusion of portions of the following counties:
Acworth serves as the trade center for this entire section
and the current county seats are too remote

For almost a quarter century, Henry Chandler was an easy guy to spot at his eponymous Henry’s Louisiana Grill in downtown Acworth
From his signature chef’s jacket to pajama pants to wild-child hair and neatly trimmed beard
Henry loved to work the crowd when he wasn’t in the kitchen
chatting up both longtime customers and newbies and settling Mardi Gras beads around their necks
After he and wife Claudia sold the popular Cajun/fusion/southern eatery to a Colorado couple in April
Chandler agreed to stick around for some months as a consultant
the couple will settle into retirement-with an asterisk
They plan to market a line of their signature sauces and Henry says he’ll pen a light-hearted cookbook
fresh from extensive culinary training in Europe
spent several years at local restaurant gigs
Then a piece of property became available in downtown Acworth
“It was 100 percent five o’clock roll it up and get out of town,” the veteran restauranteur
Claudia Chandler says prior tenants had failed
so the owners agreed to lease the 15-hundred-square foot space at an affordable price
Friends and neighbors helped them prep the eatery
They did it for red beans and rice and cold Abita beer.”
Friends helped by occupying seats near the front windows and making sure they parked their cars right in front of the building-giving a sense that the place was bustling
That sleight of hand became reality after a lean six months or so
drawn by word of mouth and the prospect of delectable crawfish etouffee and Louisiana ooh la la (shellfish in a to-die-for Cajun cream sauce and their biggest seller)
That tied into their moving into expanded digs a few doors down in 2003
There were highs and lows-both in the restaurant business and life itself
In a national popular-vote contest fostered by ABC’s “Nightline” the restaurant won the “People’s Platelist” award
signifying the best local chef in the country
“We weren’t even aware there was a contest(at first),” said Claudia Chandler
“We were nominated by one of our customers.”
The 2010 award served as a welcome bounce back from a 2008 that was both rocky and remarkable
That’s when Chandler was diagnosed with liver cancer
They were told they didn’t qualify for a transplant-and never could
The appropriate officials later reversed themselves after a procedure brought some improvement
They got an 11th-hour liver offer as Chandler was at Piedmont Hospital
Three months and one successful operation later
“Claudia kept the whole place going,” says Chandler
Claudia in turn gives much credit to friends and the community at large
But it also featured a second physical expansion to meet still-burgeoning demand
with Henry’s being widely credited as helping spark the revival
Their food and service have been widely praised
But the couple indicates the restaurant’s magic has extended beyond hearty plates of jambalaya and solicitous servers
“There was a young 21-year-old man (and customer) who graduated today and his mom told me that they had celebrated lifetime memories there” says Henry Chandler
‘the number one reason we keep coming back is every time we come

“The purpose of the authority is to promote tourism
and trade shows within the area,” said Taylor Aubrey
Acworth’s marketing and communications manager
during which attendees introduced themselves
a resident of Acworth who attended a previous meeting
The session officially began after the board approved the regular meeting minutes for March
Details for upcoming events were discussed next, with the Spring Town Hall, set for April 23, generating much excitement among board members. Live at Logan Farm Park is scheduled for April 26 and will feature a free concert with the Weekend Getaway band
The board also reviewed the effectiveness of its marketing and social media efforts, noting an increase in email subscribers, engagement and website traffic. Among the most visited sites were those for Visit Acworth and the Acworth Art Fest
The meeting concluded with a discussion of the Public Art Master Plan
including budget allocations and potential consultants
Though most of the meeting centered on the board’s satisfaction with recent events
Acworth residents also appeared happy with the authority’s work
“They are advocating for the community to create a more vibrant ecosystem,” Carpenter said
More information about the Acworth Tourism Bureau Authority can be found on the city’s website
Details about upcoming city events are available on the Visit Acworth website and social media pages
The article was incredibly concise and well written

This was a very nice article that I enjoyed
I think the author did a good job of highlighting the points early and then expanding on them when needed
I look forward to seeing more articles from Ashu
I’m happy to see the article mentions the Spring Town Hall and Live at Logan Farm Park

There’s a new entry on the bagel front in Acworth
Co-owner Valee Desai says their store, dubbed Jeff’s Bagel Run
originated with founder Jeff Perera and his wife
After a layoff in 2019 and missing the New York bagels they craved after relocating south
the Pereras tinkered with and perfected a recipe in their kitchen
which resulted in his making a daily bagel run
delivering to spots in his part of Orlando
A brick-and-mortar location followed in 2021
who bought the business and began franchising
Valee and her hubby had prior retail connections with Wetherill
Desai and her general manager headed to Florida to
“ get engrossed in all things bagel.” It is worth noting that Desai had no restaurant experience
Her background covered franchise owner of a small electronics repair shop and corporate marketing and brand development
Back home and having signed a franchise deal
found and prepped a physical location and hired and trained staff
Desai says that from the first day,” the community has welcomed us with open arms.”
They offer 14 bagels and a bagel of the day
Their specialty bread ranges from plain to everything bagels
along with variations such as jalapeno cheddar
“All of our bagels are boiled and baked throughout the morning,” says Desai.’” Once we run out of bagels-and this is why we tell people not to sleep in-once we run out of a bagel it’s gone for the day
Desai says they also alert customers that they don’t toast their product
“It’s s high-quality bagel,” says Desai by way of explanation
“It has that crunch on the outside and soft on the inside
A lot of our customers have been like ‘what
“I tell them I completely understand and to just give it a try
We think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.” And she says
The couple’s moving into a booming bagel and deli scene
A quick online check showed nearly a dozen spots in Acworth and surrounding communities that put bagels at center stage
plus the Starbucks and Dunkin’ Donuts of the world
which offer them as one of many alternatives
a mainstay in the Acworth community since the 1990s
Desai is confident her fledgling location can navigate its way among the competition
And among the things they’re doing is exploring community partnerships
including one where high school students would try their hand in the store in exchange for course credit
They’re also working out an agreement with the nonprofit Bagel Rescue
which takes leftovers and delivers them to food panties
Desai and her crew have gotten high marks on social media both for their creative and tasty bagels and friendly service
She wants you to come on in-but mind you-don’t sleep in

Acworth city officials have taken another step toward moving one of the city’s oldest structures
The Board of Alderman Thursday night approved a proposal with Croft & Associates for professional work related to architectural and engineering services for the relocation of the McCray House in the amount of $84,800.00
Deputy City Manager Angie Luna said that once discovery work is done and plans are back from the architect they’ll seek a proposal for actually moving the structure
The city of Acworth purchased the abandoned 19th century home and roughly three acres in 2021 and offered it to the Cobb Landmarks group
which planned a $750,000 capital campaign to refurbish the structure and turn it into an event and exhibit space
The nonprofit later backed away from the plan due to budgetary considerations
Mayor Tommy Allegood says plans are to preserve the home
moving it about 500 feet from its present location to the entrance to Logan Farm Park
He says it’ll be renovated and then put to use
perhaps as an events center or possibly some sort of business
Acworth started as a railroad depot for the Western & Atlantic Railroad
named the depot for his hometown of Acworth
It is the fifth largest city by population after Mableton
Acworth was incorporated as a city in 1860
