Firefighters battled a large industrial battery fire in Adelanto on Friday afternoon
at KARCO Engineering in the 9200 block of Holly Road
according to San Bernardino County Fire Department logs
It took place as an experimental battery was undergoing testing
"This battery was being tested, comprised [of] a new combination of materials, and was not a lithium ion battery," fire officials said via social media
A hazardous material crew was summoned to the scene to help with the response
Fire officials declared the incident had been concluded shortly after 9 p.m
It was ultimately determined the fire had not been as hazardous as initially feared
"Final Suppression efforts were conducted upwind and from a distance until more information was obtained," SBCFD said in an updated social media post
The contents were mainly rubber and plastic," the statement said
"It did not contain any hazardous or toxic materials
The water was tested and there were no environmental issues."

(VVNG.com) —A massive battery fire involving experimental materials erupted in Adelanto on Friday afternoon
prompting evacuations and a full hazmat response from San Bernardino County Fire
The incident was first reported at approximately 1:00 p.m
located in the 9200 block of Holly Road
According to a statement from San Bernardino County Fire
crews arrived to find a large industrial battery burning at the site
Officials confirmed the battery was undergoing testing and was made of a new combination of materials
though it was not a lithium-ion battery
Due to the unknown risks involved with the composition
the incident was quickly classified as a hazardous materials situation
“Incident command has been established and hazardous materials units are arriving,” the department said in an official update shared early in the response effort
with thick black smoke pouring into the air from a white container engulfed in flames
Surrounding the burning structure are several industrial generators
including an Allmand Maxi-Power 45 unit and a Wacker Neuson generator
The fire has caused visible charring to the exterior of the structure
and the intensity of the flames and smoke suggests the possible presence of hazardous or chemically reactive materials
with firefighters working to control the blaze while implementing safety protocols related to the unique battery materials involved
but some individuals in the immediate area were evacuated as a precaution due to the potential hazards involved
and updates will be provided as more information becomes available
UPDATE — “Suppression efforts were conducted upwind and from a distance until more information was obtained
The battery on fire was not complete,” stated San Bernardino County Fire
“The contents were mainly rubber and plastic
It did not contain any hazardous or toxic materials
The water was tested and there were no environmental issues.”

Print A federal judge has lifted a pandemic-era court order that had reduced the population at Adelanto to just two detainees. The repopulating of the facility is not connected to the Trump administration’s crackdown on immigration
WASHINGTON — One of California’s largest immigrant detention facilities is set to begin holding immigrants again now that a federal judge has lifted a pandemic-era court order that had reduced the population to just two detainees
The move comes more than a year after discussions over its potential closure led workers at the Adelanto ICE Processing Center to urge the federal government not to shut it down
Immigration and Customs Enforcement had issued temporary contract extensions every several months while awaiting resolution of the legal case
of the Central District of California wrote that “the ban on new detainee intakes at the Adelanto ICE Processing Center … is temporarily lifted pending a final fairness hearing.”
World & Nation
The White House announced a short time later that Trump had signed a presidential memorandum on Guantanamo
Neither the immigration agency nor GEO Group — the Florida-based private prison corporation that manages the facility — responded immediately to requests for comment
The population at Adelanto began dropping dramatically in 2020 after an outbreak of COVID-19 tore through the facility, prompting Hatter to order the release of detainees and to prohibit new intakes and transfers
The ban will be lifted permanently once the court issues a final approval of the settlement, which the federal government and immigrant advocates reached Dec. 23. Bitrán said final approval could come as soon as mid-March.
For now, the facility can repopulate to a maximum of only 475 people. The population cap, also established under the pandemic order, will lift upon final approval of the settlement, Bitrán said. The facility has a capacity of 1,940.
Adelanto is a former state prison about 85 miles northeast of Los Angeles that began operating as an ICE detention center in 2011. In total, California facilities can hold nearly 7,200 detainees.
Randy Erwin, president of the National Federation of Federal Employees, which represents many of the employees at Adelanto, said he was glad to learn that the facility would be repopulating because it was a waste of taxpayer money for it to sit empty.
“It’s a state-of-the-art facility and it was very clear, really from the previous administration and this one, that there’s a need for beds,” he said. “I’m glad to see that our people didn’t lose their jobs, that the facility is open and that our folks are getting back to work.”
GEO Group employees previously told The Times that the facility requires up to 500 workers at full capacity. Erwin said 350 union members were slated to be terminated had the facility closed.
Politics
Churches took in refugees from battle-scarred Central America in the 1980s
a precursor to their current focus on undocumented immigrants
The federal government moved to lift the ban last year and the ACLU opposed it
because the government had provided no assurances that it would protect people upon intake from bringing COVID-19 back into the facility
they finally moved toward settling the case
Bitrán said she never would have thought that five years later there would still be a ban against new detainees at the Adelanto facility
“But there was always a ticking clock on that intake ban.”
Rep. Judy Chu (D-Monterey Park), who has been strongly in favor of Adelanto’s closure, said she will continue monitoring conditions there.
“Frankly, I’m scared for the safety and security of immigrants detained now by GEO Group in the Adelanto facility and the ones who will be detained there by the Trump administration’s ICE raids,” she said.
Although the Biden administration ended contracts with several detention facilities across the country, the Trump administration has quickly moved to vastly expand immigrant detention.
On Wednesday, Trump signed a memorandum directing the federal government to begin using the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba for the detention of 30,000 “high priority” immigrants.
The suspension of advocates’ access to immigrant detention centers eliminates most chances for detainees without a lawyer to receive basic legal information
“This will double our capacity immediately,” Trump said at the White House earlier in the day. Those remarks came just after Trump signed the Laken Riley Act, his first legislative win this term. The law will increase detention by requiring that immigrants charged with certain crimes, such as theft, be detained.
Congress funded 41,500 immigrant detention beds last fiscal year. Before Trump took office, more than 39,000 people were already being detained. During his first term in 2019, immigration authorities detained a high of more than 55,000 people.

Why can't Adelanto develop along Highway 395?In 1985
the Adelanto City Council entered a contract with Caltrans agreeing to "kill" all economic development along Highway 395 from Interstate 15 to Kramer Junction
while Route 395 transitioned from a freeway to a controlled access highway
In 2024, Reyes created the first Highway 395 ordinance, Ordinance No. 647
would uplift controlled access to the area
The controlled access of Highway 395 by Caltrans has "severely restricted economic development within the corridor," Reyes said in a late March city council meeting

The contract was lifted for the cities of Victorville and Hesperia in 1999

Adelanto, Reyes said, has to go through the bureaucratic processes of Caltrans, San Bernardino County Transit Authority

Without access to development along the busy highway
Adelanto is unable to capture the wealth of potential sales taxes in the busy area
"Taxes are how cities survive," Reyes said in support of the ordinance

(VVNG.com) – The city of Adelanto is considering implementing new truck route enforcement measures to protect local roads from damage caused by oversized vehicles
discussed during last Wednesday’s city council meeting on March 12
includes the use of cameras and signage to monitor and deter trucks from using non-designated routes
Mayor Pro Tem Daniel Ramos raised concerns about the wear and tear caused by heavy trucks
especially on recently paved roads like Koala Road
He explained that large trucks are causing “waves” in the street’s surface as they shift gears and add weight while turning onto Koala Road
He stressed the importance of enforcing truck routes to prevent further damage
particularly in areas where trucks are not permitted
suggesting that the city explore the use of cameras along Chamberlain Road to monitor truck traffic
He proposed placing signage to alert truck drivers that they will face fines if they travel down residential streets instead of the designated truck routes
“We’re doing a lot of capital improvement projects
and having these big rigs driving through residential roads
parking in front of homes… they’re just damaging the roads,” Reyes said
Reyes emphasized that the city’s goal was not to target local truck drivers but to protect the roads and investments made in capital improvement projects
adding that the use of cameras could help enforce the rules effectively without requiring excessive manpower
City Manager Jessie Flores confirmed that the city is already in the process of obtaining bids for truck route cameras
“And some of these cameras we’re looking at are the similar cameras you see at Walmart
with all the bells and whistles and the lights
He reassured the city council that the city’s IT department is actively reviewing the options
The discussion came immediately after the city council approved the construction contract for the Dennis Street and Kay Street Pavement Rehabilitation Project
aimed at improving infrastructure of “deteriorating existing asphalt in a disadvantaged community,” city records show
involves the removal of deteriorated pavement and the installation of a rubberized asphalt overlay
was awarded the contract with a bid of $349,000
The truck route enforcement initiative will be an important part of the city’s ongoing efforts to protect its infrastructure and ensure that roads are used responsibly
designated truck routes include major streets like Palmdale Road (Highway 18)
enforcement measures are now being considered to ensure compliance and reduce damage from unauthorized truck traffic
As the city continues to prioritize road improvements
it’s hopeful that these measures will help protect the community’s infrastructure for years to come

U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) recently issued a statement sharing its intent to extend the task order of the Adelanto ICE Processing Center until Dec
ICE and private prison corporation GEO Group announced their intent to utilize the first of two five-year option periods defined in the facility contract
extending Adelanto Processing Center operations to 2029
The decision for continued support came after the Sept
30 deadline to "allow the agency to maintain readiness while planning future use of the facility."
The federal agency argued that the extension was backed by the need for the detention space to "remove individuals to their home countries and hold those in custody who require detention and are a public safety threat."
ICE continues to modernize the immigration system as resources allow it to realize cost efficiencies across the operational landscape
The Adelanto ICE Processing Center is run by the private prison corporation, GEO Group, which purchased the facility in 2010 from the city of Adelanto and entered a contract with ICE the following year through an intergovernmental service agreement with the city
ICE and The GEO Group entered a 15-year contract on Dec. 19, 2019, for the provision of housing and care at the Adelanto Center, consisting of a five-year base period ending on Dec. 19, 2024. Proceeding this would be two five-year option periods.
The GEO Group announced its intent to exercise the first five-year option period on Oct
The decision was made in collaboration with U.S
Immigration and Customs Enforcement and extends the contract for the 1,940-bed ICE Processing Center through Dec
“We believe the exercise of this five-year contract option period by ICE is indicative of the important role the Adelanto Center plays in helping ICE and the U.S
Department of Homeland Security fulfill their mission and operational priorities," GEO Executive Chairman George Zoley said
"We are proud of our approximately 350 employees at the Adelanto Center
whose dedication and professionalism have allowed GEO to establish a long-standing record of providing high-quality support services on behalf of ICE in the state of California.”
ascertain that the processing center has a history of documented human rights abuses
Along with Chu, 20 other Congress representatives collaborated on a written statement supporting the permanent closure of the Adelanto ICE Processing Center
"expose[s] the remaining detainees to risk of illness
House of Representatives member Jay Obernolte expressed his relief for the extension on the social media platform X
"I was glad to learn that ICE is extending the Adelanto ICE Processing Center's task order and not forcing it to shut down," he said
"It's long past time to fully reopen this center and utilize it to house immigrants pending their court hearings rather than releasing them into our communities
[California District 23] and the rest of the country can't afford failed policies like 'catch and release' and Alternatives to Detention."
The detention center has a capacity of 1,940, although post-COVID-19 numbers have dwindled to as few as five occupied beds, following a federal order to release detainees and employees from the possibility of outbreak exposure
continues to block the center from accepting more detainees
Chu and fellow representatives are calling on the Department of Justice to cease their pursuit of removing the intake ban on the case
"which will only lead to placing more detainees in harm's way."
taxpayers personally pay millions of dollars to keep nearly empty ICE detention centers like the Adelanto center afloat
ICE commits to pay for a certain number of beds, whether they’re used or not, however. The federal government pays for 1,455 beds a day at Adelanto
using taxpayer money to keep the lights on at a nearly empty facility
A number of other health and safety violations at the facility have also been subject to various closure warnings. A 2018 Department of Homeland Security report found that the conditions inside the facility were serious and violated federal "Performance-Based National Detention Standards."
The most concerning of the Adelanto facility issues as identified by the report were nooses in detainee cells
improper and overly restrictive segregation
A man died after being struck by several vehicles
The collisions took place shortly after 7 p.m
San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department logs show
The victim was identified by coroner's officials as Paul Ceniceros
He was crossing Palmdale Road when he was hit by a westbound pickup truck
The driver did not initially realize he had hit a pedestrian, but turned around and returned to the collision site, where he found the victim lying in the roadway, sheriff's officials said in an written statement
he discovered he struck a pedestrian and attempted to stop traffic from colliding into the downed pedestrian," according to the statement
and the pedestrian was struck several more times by other vehicles."
Officials said the pickup truck driver then positioned his truck in front of the badly injured man until first responders arrived
Ceniceros died from his injuries at the scene
None of the vehicles that struck the victim following the initial impact remained at the scene
"Investigators at the Victor Valley Station are attempting to identify citizens who drove in the area where the victim was found and believe they hit something in the roadway
unaware it was a pedestrian," the statement said

Adelanto's business license tax hasn't been updated in 36 years and no longer reflects the city's economic landscape
Measure R classifies businesses into five categories and taxes them based on their gross receipts
A "yes" vote would improve essential city services and protects public safety with local funding that can't be taken away by the state or county
With 100% of the precinct votes accounted for after Election Day
According to measure authors Gabriel Reyes, Daniel Ramos, Joy Jeannette
San Bernardino County has taken millions in local revenue away from Adelanto
Voting yes on Measure R improves essential city services and protects public safety servants
The funds allocated in the measure are specific to Adelanto and cannot be taken away by the state or county
Measure R will help keep the local sheriff substation open 24/7 to support emergency 911 calls
It will support crime prevention and neighborhood safety
The measure will also improve street conditions
All funds of Measure R must be spent locally for programs and services
Live election updates: High Desert voters weigh in on candidates, measures
What is Measure R?The aim of Measure R is to create a system that aligns contributions with business revenue
The existing flat-rate tax structure of the city's current business license tax only generates $70,000 annually from over 1,200 businesses
Adelanto contracted with HdL Companies to undertake a study that would modernize Adelanto business tax structure compared to other cities in California
HdL compared Adelanto's current structure with other similar jurisdictions and proposed a simplified business license tax structure
reducing the current 57 categories to five
Final election results: An incumbent and a former council member win the Adelanto seats
The city hopes that this updated tax code will modernize Adelanto's revenue collection and support the city’s growth
City officials anticipate that through Measure R revenue will increase by roughly $1,200,000
That money will go into the city's General Fund
