bond compared to 33,714 people who voted against the bond >> RESULTS: San Antonio-area school districts, bonds for May 3, 2025 election said the bond will fund several large projects while also filling big gaps in talent and industry “We know there’s a gap of 50,000 nurses within the state of Texas and several thousand within our community,” he said The bond package includes a proposed $95 million new school of nursing in the Medical Center which would be part of San Antonio College It will be the first Alamo Colleges campus in that area of San Antonio Another goal of the bond is to make colleges more accessible throughout the city The bond provides funding for the construction of three other new locations: Flores said the bond package will not increase the tax rate for the Alamo Colleges District the increase in population will cover the cost of the projects A growing population results in a larger taxpayer base “Although San Antonio has been growing rapidly Alamo Colleges have been growing at twice that rate,” Flores said Alamo Colleges has a student enrollment of 80,000 this spring That number is expected to rise to 88,000 by August Enrollment is forecasted to reach 100,000 students by August of 2030 the bond will also add to existing campuses For a breakdown of each bond project and cost, click here. According to a "South Lamar Staff Protest" thread on Reddit 70% of their workforce called in for a one-day strike on Saturday in what should have been a big night for the opening weekend of Marvel's "Thunderbolts." "Sinners" and "The Accountant 2" were also slated to run Saturday before screenings were canceled The post claimed that employees were required to oversee multiple theaters simultaneously this multi-theater assignment stems from understaffing exacerbated by "the disastrous layoffs that affected a quarter of the company" earlier in 2025 "No hourly employee has been given a raise in the past year and a half," the Reddit thread said "Nobody has been compensated for working 3x harder than we were working last year but we’re sure corporate and Sony have been getting nice paychecks." the South Lamar location continues to operate under its usual hours It's uncertain whether management intends to address employees' concerns directly or if any further actions are being planned On May 2,  Alamo Drafthouse workers at the Slaughter Lane location in Austin announced they're unionizing workers assert that Alamo Drafthouse has fostered "unsustainable working conditions" and carried out "devastating layoffs," depriving affected employees of their earned PTO and leaving them with short notice to secure new employment they are advocating for a fair contract and improved working conditions while also seeking certification from the National Labor Relations Board Sign up for TPR Today Texas Public Radio's newsletter that brings our top stories to your inbox each morning Three education bonds were on Saturday’s ballot for Bexar County voters Voters across Bexar County were eligible to vote in the Alamo Colleges District bond election and a wide majority gave their approval for the community college system’s nearly $1 billion bond The Alamo Colleges plans to use the $987 million bond to support rapid expected enrollment growth and expand programming with a focus on workforce development. The bond will pay for the construction or renovation of 15 buildings including buildings at four new locations: Port San Antonio and a new training center north of Loop 1604 The Alamo Colleges District last went out for a bond election in 2017 The second time appears to be the charm for the East Central Independent School District After voters struck down four ballot propositions in November 2024 East Central ISD tried again with a trimmed down proposal this election A majority of East Central’s voters gave their support for the district’s $309 million bond to address enrollment growth East Central plans to use the funding to build a second high school and two new elementary schools Its previous bond proposal was $360 million and also included a voter-approved tax rate increase and funding for a stadium and athletic facilities at East Central High School District officials said that if new schools aren’t built by 2027 multiple campuses will be over capacity by thousands of students East Central estimates the property tax bill of a home worth $280,000 will go up about $157 a year starting in 2027 due to the bond Voters in the Floresville Independent School District asked voters to approve a $95 million bond to support enrollment growth But more than 70% of the district’s voters said no Floresville ISD’s footprint extends slightly into Bexar County but the district is primarily located in Wilson County The district wanted to use the funding to build a new intermediate school and make additional repairs and expansions District officials said adding a campus for fifth and sixth grade will alleviate overcrowding at the elementary schools and the middle school Alamo Drafthouse employees at the iconic South Lamar location in Austin staged a walkout over the weekend leading to canceled screenings and disrupted service for moviegoers which employees referred to as a "sickout," was aimed at drawing attention to overwhelming working conditions The strike comes less than a year after the Austin-founded theater chain was acquired by Sony Pictures Experiences and follows corporate layoffs that cut more than a dozen positions earlier this year Roughly 70% of the workforce at the South Lamar location participated in the sickout according to a Reddit post shared by employees workers warned potential patrons to cancel or reschedule their tickets saying they were "guaranteed to get poor service if you get service at all." Employees claimed they were being forced to manage multiple theaters simultaneously due to what they described as extreme understaffing alleging that earlier cuts affected nearly a quarter of the company and worsened the strain on remaining workers employees said wages have remained flat for at least 18 months despite increasing workloads The strike highlights growing tension over compensation and transparency at one of Texas’s most well-known cinema chains A major point of contention is Alamo’s 18% service fee a model introduced in place of traditional tipping that fee does not go to the hourly workers but is instead funneled into subsidizing other Alamo locations across the country “Apparently our service fees have been getting used to subsidize other Alamos.. so we don’t get compensated for working extra hard,” the anonymous post read a representative for Alamo Drafthouse confirmed the South Lamar location remains open and operating under normal hours It's unclear whether management plans to respond directly to the concerns raised by staff or if further actions are being considered Alamo Drafthouse has long been celebrated for combining food and film in a curated moviegoing experience But recent developments suggest the worker experience may not match the polished exterior seen on screen This story was first reported by MySanAntonio.com Gallery Credit: Chris Compendio A 'sickout' at Alamo Drafthouse raises questions about labor practices and employee satisfaction. This approval marks the largest bond in the district's history, signifying a major investment in higher education, workforce training, and economic growth across the region. The bond will fund the construction, renovation, and expansion of facilities to address the region's growing educational and workforce needs. Projects include the development of new academic and workforce centers and upgrades across the district's five colleges. New locations funded through the bond will include a School of Emerging Technologies at Port San Antonio and a Center of Applied Technology and an Automotive (T-TEN Program) and Heavy Machinery Program at Brooks. These are two rapidly growing hubs of innovation and industry. Also included is a School of Nursing and Health Professions located in the South Texas Medical Center. The San Antonio area population is projected to grow by more than 29% by 2040, reaching nearly 2.5 million residents. A Citizen’s Bond Advisory Committee, composed of community and business leaders, guided the planning behind the bond, shaping the district’s priorities based on growth trends, workforce demand, and student success. The main threats are large hail, damaging wind gusts, and heavy rains with an isolated tornado also possible. FORECASTSHARE PHOTOS & VIDEOTemporary enclosure to be built over Alamoby Phil Sterling SAN ANTONIO - There are plans to build a temporary enclosure over the Alamo so that its roof can be replaced we need it obviously,” San Antonio resident Kenny Henninger said Some who saw the drawing of the enclosure don't like what they see “The whole view of it looks so ugly by doing that,” San Antonio resident Michelle Hu said The Texas Historical Commission approved the roof replacement and enclosure yesterday “I think it provides really a pretty remarkable level of access of visual access to the site,” said a Texas Historic Commission Commissioner The structure should stand around 50 to 60 feet tall and will not only shield the Alamo from the rain but will let the limestone that it's built out of dry out so it's easier to preserve Staff with the Alamo say construction of the enclosure is expected to start within the first half of 2026 and end in 2027 But inside the Alamo will close at some point It's too early to tell when and how long Kenny Henninger says it's a small inconvenience to restore this world heritage site everyone in the world knows what the Alamo is,” Henninger said The state is allocating $50 million for the restoration of the church and a long barrack Visit San Antonio shared a statement about the project “It is a positive for visitors and visitation San Antonio travelers have the unique opportunity to be a part of history in the making as the Alamo church is restored and numerous new experiences such as the upcoming museum open in the next two years With these restorations and improvements to the Alamo footprint visitors will have more reasons to come to San Antonio and explore our history and culture.” SEARCH YOUR LOCAL RACESFind race resultsSchool DistrictsACCD Bond Election, Prop. The statement added: "Originally established in 1718 It was constructed using locally sourced limestone Confirming this quarry’s location provides an unprecedented link to the materials that shaped San Antonio’s historic built environment." senior director of communications and community outreach at Alamo Trust explained that the "Alamo’s Head Conservator and the preservation team happened to be driving by the Zoo’s active construction site and were curious if the limestone there could be a potential match Since historical records have indicated a source north of downtown and a company called Highbridge Materials conducted testing The discovery is significant as preservation and conservation efforts for the two artifacts the Alamo Church and Long Barrack move forward Identifying a potential source of compatible material ensures that the right resources are available to support the long-term preservation of these historic structures." The discovery came as the Alamo and the area around it undergoes a $550 million redevelopment project which is scheduled to be completed in 2027 Today (April 23rd) we celebrate a rare milestone—David Muñoz longtime San Antonio radio personality and devoted golfer marks exactly 60 years since his very first round of golf Even more special: that first round was played at Riverside Golf Course where he returns today to honor the occasion We sat down with David to reminisce about that first round and the lifelong connection he’s had with golf and Riverside ACGT: So your first round of golf was here at Riverside so he knew he would be able to pay for the round at the turn It was nine holes that were 100 yards or less along with two par fours I was only 11 and did not think about saving things at the time so I don’t have a copy of that scorecard But I do know that it was a 111 and I was very happy to play with my father.” ACGT: That was before the back nine opened across the river They didn’t open the nine holes on the south side of the river until 1973 ACGT: Do you remember what clubs you used back then But I do remember I made a birdie on what’s now the par five 12th hole I also birdied number six on the front side ACGT: How has your game changed over the years Any advice for golfers who want that same kind of longevity I always go back to what Jimmy Valvano said: ‘Don’t give up Only one person knows what I’ll shoot today But I’m playing today in my father’s honor.” ACGT: Do you still feel his presence when you’re playing I recall in 2003 my first trip to New York it was called the Major League Baseball game of the week I took my first trip to New York with my wife Betty I feel his presence whenever I’m playing golf.” ACGT: What does golf mean to you after all these years It’s about looking forward to the next shot because my father introduced the game to me way back when I’ve had the pleasure of having played so many courses He and I made a pact in 2010 to do what we could to take the golf trip every year We played several of the famous courses all over the country as well and it has been an honor to be able to take those golf trips with him factor or it could be a very frustrating factor but you got to do your best to do what you can to play your best game.” ACGT: You’ve had an impressive radio career as well What’s that been like alongside your golf life I host Smooth Jazz San Antonio on 101.9 HD2 and fill in on the golf show on Ticket 760 I’ve also been in advertising sales for 24 years ACGT: What’s your first thought when you arrive at Riverside today This course has always held a special place in my heart I remember during my father’s funeral procession It was like he got one more visit to the course The old number 16 was one of the most disliked holes in San Antonio It’s a gift to still have this course here on the south side.” David’s story is more than a walk down memory lane it’s a heartfelt reminder of golf’s power to connect generations we’re honored that his journey began and continues right here on the Alamo City Golf Trail
