The school has more than four thousand students—of whom 97 percent are ethnic minorities and more than 80 percent are economically disadvantaged. As I described the area in a 2021 Texas Monthly cover story about the newest Texans “To drive through Alief is to tour the world—Vietnamese stores on this block The distinctive rooflines of mosques and Buddhist temples punctuate the horizon.” a former track and field standout at the University of Houston who narrowly missed the 1996 Olympics after serving in Iraq as an Army reservist and over the ensuing decade turned the soccer program into a powerhouse built on harnessing the community’s diversity By the time Elsik won that state title game in 2018 and completed an undefeated season the Rams had become so strong that anything less than a commanding win was a disappointment Cox’s Elsik teams had a fraction of the budget of their biggest rivals They’d use repurposed orange construction barrels as practice dummies and show up to games in a rickety bus with failing AC Cox sometimes did players’ laundry and brought them breakfast but they’ve failed to build the dynasty that looked inevitable after earning the title Elsik is 24–2 this season, and when they made it to the regional finals, on April 1, it looked to be a great test of strength, against two-time defending state champs Seven Lakes, from Katy. It was a home game for Elsik, at Crump Stadium in Alief, and scores of former players showed up to witness what they hoped would be a comeback story. Elsik won 5–1 that night, in front of a jubilant crowd in a 1–0 match to advance to the final Cox played down those accomplishments when I checked in with him this week and explained that his 2018 championship team likely had more raw talent than this year’s squad “But this team is better coached,” he said “We can do things they could not do.” Cox has spent time the past few summers training in Germany and Spain and he thinks his system is tighter than ever and less dependent on individual players the system was like a three-hundred-piece jigsaw puzzle,” he told me “Now it’s like a twenty-piece puzzle The pieces are bigger and easier to put together.” He also has the benefit of having legacy players who grew up watching Elsik soccer and absorbing it from a young age Senior defender and team captain Jacob Ordonez is the younger brother of Javier Ordonez the captain of the 2022 team featured in my Texas Monthly feature Senior attacker Asa Marsh is the brother of Wren Marsh Chris Guillen is the brother of Steven Guillen from the class of 2019 The Rams will take the field against another Houston-area team to play for the championship title once again The teams have met once before this season But Cox doesn’t want to talk about that Klein Cain was missing a couple of its key players that game he’s working to get his players to forget that game ever happened “and focus on playing a totally new team.” in a penalty-kick shootout to break a 1–1 tie at the end of regulation The team’s 21-game winning streak began right after that loss to Elsik the Rams soccer squad is more popular in Alief than ever before the Elsik crowd dwarfed that of Vista Ridge Cox has long entertained the idea of pursuing a college coaching job one day and essentially graduating from Elsik himself but he also knows that the community has embraced him in a way that may be impossible to replicate just as they do for their favorite players Blaise Matuidi a famous former World Cup champion from the French national team recently approached Cox about starting an elite training academy in Houston but he and Matuidi both know that his success has long been fueled by Alief’s pipeline of new Texans and underdog spirit Cox is an elite coach who would lose something if he focused only on the elites “He wants me to stay at Elsik,” Cox says The Alief Elsik Rams and Klein Cain Hurricanes will play for the 6A boys soccer state championship Saturday, April 12, at 6:30 p.m., at Birkelbach Field in Georgetown.
