The last time Elsik High School played for a boys 6A state championship in soccer
and the program had overcome tremendous challenges to get there
whose Rams return to the final this weekend
is one of three enormous public high schools in the Alief neighborhood of southwest Houston
a community of more than 100,000 people that is one of the most diverse in the country
home to immigrants and refugees from around the world
At Elsik, many kids show up with little to no experience speaking English, and some with no formal education at all. The school has more than four thousand students—of whom 97 percent are ethnic minorities and more than 80 percent are economically disadvantaged. As I described the area in a 2021 Texas Monthly cover story about the newest Texans
“To drive through Alief is to tour the world—Vietnamese stores on this block
The distinctive rooflines of mosques and Buddhist temples punctuate the horizon.”
a former track and field standout at the University of Houston who narrowly missed the 1996 Olympics
after serving in Iraq as an Army reservist
and over the ensuing decade turned the soccer program into a powerhouse built on harnessing the community’s diversity
By the time Elsik won that state title game in 2018 and completed an undefeated season
the Rams had become so strong that anything less than a commanding win was a disappointment
Cox’s Elsik teams had a fraction of the budget of their biggest rivals
They’d use repurposed orange construction barrels as practice dummies and show up to games in a rickety bus with failing AC
Cox sometimes did players’ laundry and brought them breakfast
but they’ve failed to build the dynasty that looked inevitable after earning the title
Elsik is 24–2 this season, and when they made it to the regional finals, on April 1, it looked to be a great test of strength, against two-time defending state champs Seven Lakes, from Katy. It was a home game for Elsik, at Crump Stadium in Alief, and scores of former players showed up to witness what they hoped would be a comeback story. Elsik won 5–1 that night, in front of a jubilant crowd
in a 1–0 match to advance to the final
Cox played down those accomplishments when I checked in with him this week and explained that his 2018 championship team likely had more raw talent than this year’s squad
“But this team is better coached,” he said
“We can do things they could not do.”
Cox has spent time the past few summers training in Germany and Spain
and he thinks his system is tighter than ever and less dependent on individual players
the system was like a three-hundred-piece jigsaw puzzle,” he told me
“Now it’s like a twenty-piece puzzle
The pieces are bigger and easier to put together.”
He also has the benefit of having legacy players
who grew up watching Elsik soccer and absorbing it from a young age
Senior defender and team captain Jacob Ordonez is the younger brother of Javier Ordonez
the captain of the 2022 team featured in my Texas Monthly feature
Senior attacker Asa Marsh is the brother of Wren Marsh
Chris Guillen is the brother of Steven Guillen from the class of 2019
The Rams will take the field against another Houston-area team
to play for the championship title once again
The teams have met once before this season
But Cox doesn’t want to talk about that
Klein Cain was missing a couple of its key players that game
he’s working to get his players to forget that game ever happened
“and focus on playing a totally new team.”
in a penalty-kick shootout to break a 1–1 tie at the end of regulation
The team’s 21-game winning streak began right after that loss to Elsik
the Rams soccer squad is more popular in Alief than ever before
the Elsik crowd dwarfed that of Vista Ridge
Cox has long entertained the idea of pursuing a college coaching job one day and essentially graduating from Elsik himself
but he also knows that the community has embraced him in a way that may be impossible to replicate
just as they do for their favorite players
Blaise Matuidi
a famous former World Cup champion from the French national team
recently approached Cox about starting an elite training academy in Houston
but he and Matuidi both know that his success has long been fueled by Alief’s pipeline of new Texans and underdog spirit
Cox is an elite coach who would lose something if he focused only on the elites
“He wants me to stay at Elsik,” Cox says
The Alief Elsik Rams and Klein Cain Hurricanes will play for the 6A boys soccer state championship Saturday, April 12, at 6:30 p.m., at Birkelbach Field in Georgetown. Tickets are available here

HOUSTON – On Nov
voters in Alief Independent School District cast their ballots to either approve or reject Proposition A
The tax rate proposition aims to generate funds to potentially address budgetary shortfalls caused by rising costs for staff
the district will receive $11.3 million more in local funding annually and $4.1 million more in state funding annually to be used for staff salaries and daily operations

2025 : U.K.-French film sales and production company Alief has acquired worldwide sales rights to “Luna Rosa: The 7th Ascension of Atabey”
the fourth feature from Puerto Rican director and musician Omar Rodríguez-López
frontman of Grammy-winning band The Mars Volta
Described by Alief co-founder Miguel Angel Govea as Rodríguez-López’s “most cohesive
fully narrative film yet,” Luna Rosa is a sci-fi dystopian epic that unfolds in Borinquen — the Indigenous Taíno name for Puerto Rico
The film follows Zur’na (played by Flora Sylvestre)
a woman navigating enemy territory under American colonial control to find her missing brother
the film blends striking visuals with themes of mind control
the film features a hypnotic score co-composed by Rodríguez-López and Red Hot Chili Peppers’ guitarist John Frusciante
Alief is already fielding interest from Spain
while Piano is handling the film’s distribution in Mexico
which has selected Luna Rosa as part of its official lineup
“It’s the exact intersection of artforms we want to champion,” said Anna Bogutskaya
The film was produced by Rodríguez-López’s Telesterion Inc
and financed in part by Germany’s Clouds Hill Films
which also manages The Mars Volta’s music label
Described by Piano Mexico’s Ester Bernal as “one of the most forward-thinking approaches to Latin American science fiction,” Luna Rosa draws influence from both classic Latin American cinema and cult B-movies
delivering what Alief calls an “unparalleled fantasy” fused with “a powerful social critique.”
Rodríguez-López is already at work on his fifth feature film
He was recently the subject of the documentary “Omar and Cedric: If This Ever Gets Weird” by Nicolas Jack Davies

HOUSTON – Just as the holiday season is getting started
a Houston family now has no place to spend the holidays
The Ogar’s lost their home in a fire just two days before Thanksgiving
The family lived in the home for three decades
raising a family and eventually paying off the mortgage - a freeing feeling
But they also dropped the insurance policy on the home
meaning there’s no help coming to assist them with rebuilding
so we’re just going to have to let it go.”
Carol has been spending her day sifting through the ashes with her son
“We are trying to go through this,” she said while sorting things into plastic bags
“We just trying to scavenge and see what we can find
She remembers that by the time the Houston Fire Department arrived
She also remembers standing outside watching a lifetime of memories burn in front of her own eyes
which typically funnels the smoke from the fireplace out of the home
Carol says she started a fire to take the chill away
“It was going for about an hour and a half
By the time she even noticed something was wrong
her neighbors were banging on the front door
the walls are hone and there’s no insurance
But what’s seemingly worse is this holiday
Carol Ogar: “I’m staying with one of my daughters.”
And I’m staying in a hotel room not too far from here
if only the Ogar’s would’ve had their chimney inspected
But there’s more to preventing a fire than just that
“I’d say the first thing is to make sure that everything is open and operational,” said Captain Samantha Smith with the Community Volunteer Fire Department
Smith stopped by KPRC 2′s Gage Goulding’s house to see how his fireplace safety ranks
but we definitely don’t want this right here when we’re about to start a fireplace,” Cpt
Smith said of a Christmas stocking hanging from the mantle
“I’m going to go ahead and move it out of our out of our way so we can be safe.”
pointing out three big things to check off your list before starting a fire - whether gas or wood
keeping everything three feet away from the flames
“We always again say that three-foot rule is what we usually go off of
We don’t want to have the tree or anything necessarily that’s within three feet of a live fire source.”
There’s also making sure your fire stays inside the fireplace
using spark screens and keeping wood away is a good start
“I would say the third biggest one is getting that checked
Getting the fireplace checked prior to utilizing it every season,” Smith said
but it’s really easy to forget or let slip
“People should definitely get the chimneys inspected,” Fidel said

The “Square” name is synonymous with Greater Houston football
the Square name is royalty—there’s been a Square playing for the Lions dating back to the mid-1920 until the late 2000s
The last of the Third Ward football family to make waves was Damion Square
who helped lead Alabama to three BCS National Championships under Nick Saban
The defensive lineman went on to play nine seasons in the NFL and is now the defensive line coach at the University of West Alabama
there’s a new Square emerging—Micah Square
who just graduated from Hamilton Middle School in Cy-Fair ISD
He’s currently zoned to Cy-Fair High School
165-pound incoming freshman is a dual-sport athlete: roaming the outfield and pitching in baseball
while also running deep routes in football
“I was born when my dad was playing at Alabama,” Micah said
but I do remember being around the locker rooms in Kansas City and with the Rams
who currently plays quarterback at Wake Forest and was also a college baseball player at Oregon
“My first love is football because all of my family played the sport and were legends,” he said
and it really keeps me in shape for football
Baseball gives me a lot of practice tracking down balls and taking the right angles in the outfield
so baseball keeps my arm in shape and strong.”
I don’t really feel the pressure of living up to the Square name,” he said
I’ve learned to just have a ‘goldfish’ memory
If something great happens or something bad happens
While wide receiver is his natural position
he’s expanding his skill set at quarterback
“I have big hands and feel like I can catch anything thrown my way,” he said
I’m learning the quarterback position very quickly
Being a receiver helps me escape the pocket fast and break tackles if I need to.”
Nicknamed “Baby Hulk” by his junior high peers
the Class of 2029 prospect also has a creative side
and I love to paint custom shoes,” he said
but I also like to ride bikes on my neighborhood trails and play video games.”
He knows the recruiting process could come quickly as he rises to varsity play
“I’m not going to overthink anything,” he said
“I just want to get up to speed with the tempo of the high school game and get on the field as soon as I can
I’m just looking to win a state championship and carry on the Square name.”
Let’s not get too ahead of ourselves—Micah is still just a pup who hasn’t even been to a high school athletic period yet
like the original ‘Teen Titans’ and ‘Avatar,’” he laughed
“I’m a Philly cheesesteak guy who loves Lamborghini Urus’.”
"Micah is a really driven and engaging young athlete
He's so focused on getting better and has that competitive spirit
With his physicality and desire to improve
he's got a strong foundation for success in whatever he puts his mind to
