MIAMI – Two men are facing a slew of felony charges after Miami police said they were involved in armed cocaine trafficking
Leer en español
police conducted a controlled drug buy in the parking lot of the Air Park Plaza shopping center
located at the corner of Northwest Seventh Street and 57th Avenue in the city’s Flagami neighborhood
Police said they then searched Reyes’ home in the 2300 block of Northwest 31st Street in the Allapattah neighborhood and discovered 10 rifles
along with 181 grams of cocaine and 484 grams of marijuana
were on probation at the time of their arrests: Reyes for attempted murder and Corujo for battery on a law enforcement officer
Court records show Reyes’ attempted murder case stemmed from an arrest by what was then the Miami-Dade Police Department when he was 19
but he received withheld adjudication and probation and was designated a “youthful offender,” court records show
Records show Corujo’s probation stems from an April 4
where a city police officer caught him drinking alcohol at a public park while on a skateboard
His arrest report states that he ignored and later slapped the officer and eventually had to be shocked with a Taser after he fled
The officer later found a bag of cocaine in his pocket
Both Reyes and Corujo were being held in the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center as of Friday
with bonds listed in online jail records as “to be set.”

Allapattah is on the cusp of major change after city leaders signed off on the official redevelopment plan for one of Miami’s most historic yet overlooked neighborhoods
The Miami City Commission approved the Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) Plan for Allapattah
paving the way for long-term investment in affordable housing
which now heads to Miami-Dade County for final action
revitalize public spaces and promote sustainable financial growth so the area flourishes well into the future
At the heart of the redevelopment plan are four key goals:
■Economic Development: Promote local businesses and job creation
focusing on workforce training and small business incubation
Encourage mixed-use development that brings retail
Develop assistance for long-standing businesses in the heart of Little Santo Domingo
■Housing (Residential Life and Quality of Life): Increase the supply of affordable and mixed-income housing units and prevent displacement of low-income residents through rent stabilization measures and community land trusts
■Infrastructure and Public Improvements: Upgrade infrastructure
Focus on long-term growth and sustainability for the community
■Community Engagement: Involve residents and local stakeholders in decision-making to ensure that redevelopment meets the needs and desires of the community
Encourage inclusive participation in both planning and implementation phases
The plan includes priority projects for each goal
projects like enhancing the Northwest 17th Avenue commercial corridor with streetscape improvements
lighting upgrades and pedestrian amenities are designed to help solidify Allapattah’s “downtown” district
Other initiatives include the Small Business Stabilization and Commercial Ownership Program
which supports local businesses by offering a Commercial Acquisition Fund and storefront improvement grants
The Main Street Coordination and Downtown Activation project is to promote cultural events and activities
ensuring the neighborhood remains vibrant and full of life
Housing-related priority projects include an Allapattah Senior Housing and Infrastructure Initiative to develop senior-specific housing and a Resident Stabilization and Anti-Displacement Program to offer direct support through home rehabilitation grants
eviction prevention and other measures to prevent displacement due to redevelopment
A workforce housing initiative is to provide affordable options for employees in nearby health and court districts and the development of the GSA Site Mixed-Income Residential Project is to create a new community center with both residential and retail spaces
Infrastructure and public improvements are critical elements of the redevelopment strategy
A community-wide street lighting program aims to enhance safety in both residential and commercial areas
while security measures such as cameras and traffic calming devices are to help ensure public safety
A Neighborhood Clean-up and Beautification Initiative would target vacant properties
improve landscaping and enhance streetscapes
particularly in areas of high visibility like gateways and commercial streets
the Parks and Open Space Improvement Program would create and upgrade public parks to promote gathering and leisure
including developing a new Allapattah Community Park
Transportation improvements are integral to the redevelopment plan
The Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) Infrastructure Support project aims to enhance connectivity around Allapattah’s three Metrorail stations
Another priority project is the Community Parking and Mobility Management initiative to ease congestion and enhance transportation access through new strategies and infrastructure
including the construction of multi-use community parking garages
This would be complemented by the Pedestrian and Bicycle Connectivity Program to create safe and accessible pedestrian routes
new bike lanes and connections to key areas like schools and employment centers
Revitalization of Allapattah would be in phases over the next decade
would focus on quick wins and foundational steps
This includes launching early programs like small business grants and façade improvements
cleaning and greening efforts and studies such as infrastructure assessments
the community should begin to see cleaner streets
renovated storefronts and job training programs
The mid-term phase for the fourth through seventh year would advance more capital-intensive projects
including the construction of new streetscapes on Northwest 17th Avenue and the first phase of affordable housing projects
the redevelopment of the GSA site is expected to begin and key community facilities like parks and centers to be completed
Transit improvements such as upgrades to Metrorail stations and introduction of a circulator shuttle would come in this phase
along with private-sector projects catalyzed by CRA incentives
contributing to job creation and service availability in the neighborhood
Funding for the Allapattah redevelopment would come from a combination of public and private sources
leveraging tax-increment financing (TIF) and partnerships with the City of Miami
The CRA’s budget under the plan would be fueled by increased property tax revenues from the area
studies and financing development projects

In what seems like an obvious case of political retaliation, Miami Commissioner Joe Carollo — who is still butt hurt over being stripped from the Bayfront Park Management Trust — tried in vain Thursday to stop the Allapattah Community Redevelopment Agency from moving forward
He used to support Allapattah getting its own CRA
when he and Commissioner Miguel Gabela were pals for a short while
since both of them were mad at Commissoner Damian Pardo
But then Gabela dropped his lifetime pensions idea and Carollo — who is accused of abusing his post and mismanaging funds at the Bayfront Trust — was removed as chairman
and has been fighting to get his own CRA for more than a year
Read related: Compromise may be reached at Miami commission on Omni/Allapattah CRAs
He said Thursday that the funds for the CRA were the same dollars “we use every day for police
there’s only two ways to resolve it: You have to make cuts or you have to find new money.”
Staff tried to explain the CRA projects would be funded by any tax revenue greater than the amount collected on the base year
They can receive 50% of this tax increase or 95%
and Miami Chief Financial Officer Larry Spring recommended the Allapattah CRA be funded with 50%
That means $281.4 million would be diverted to the CRA over 30 years
It would have been $534.5 million at the higher percentage
But it’s like shouting into a vast void
Carollo also said that it would take more than five years for enough money to accumulate to make a difference
And if “we’ll assume and make believe he gets re-elected,” then Gabela “won’t even be around when the real money comes in to make an impact.”
Maybe he thinks it’s like the Bayfront Trust
“This is not money that is being taken from the general fund
It doesn’t exist yet,” explained Pardo
adding that CRAs work with the city and sometimes pay the city’s debts
like the Omni CRA — the extension of which was held hostage while Gabela fought for his Allapattah one — is doing with the port tunnel
“It is not us against them,” Pardo said
Read related: Fight over Omni CRA causes new rifts, alliances on Miami City Commission
Call the question.” He must have said “call the question” five or six times
It wasn’t as good as the meeting April 10
where the two yelled at each other and Gabela banged on the dais and demanded to know what Carollo had cost the city in legal fees
“I want the figure. I want it one my desk,” Gabela told City Attorney George Wysong. “I expect, please, an answer to the question I’ve been asking for a year now
How much has Joe Carollo cost the city in legal fees?”
which was establishing the business plan and setting boundaries
It still need to get approval from the county before a CRA can be officially established
who always seems to be looking down when he talks
was also able to pass a resolution so the the city attorney is informed any time legal fees for outside counsel reach $500,000 in any new case where they are retained to represent an elected official
who has cost the city close to $10 million in legal fees for different cases
“You know the gentleman over there has a truck record
a very bad track record,” Gabela said
He had originally wanted it to be a $150,000 threshold but changed it to $500K to get the needed vote from Chairwoman Christine King
“Something is better than nothing,” Gabela said
I know cases don’t wrap up in a few months
Cases sometimes take years,” King said
adding that the rule would now apply to future commissioners as well
“I am not going to legislate based on personalities because this doesn’t only affect us.”
But the measure only calls for the city commission to be informed
much as it is informed when another city department is going spend more than $25,000 on something
“I think we’re talking about transparency and having a threshold where it’s disclosed,” Pardo said

LUCIE — A 41-year-old man identified as a teacher at Allapattah Flats K-8 was arrested after an alleged violent encounter involving sexual battery
Ryan Zakrajsek was arrested Monday and faces charges including two counts false imprisonment and single counts each of cruelty to child/aggravated child abuse; aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill; domestic battery by strangulation; simple battery/domestic violence; and sexual battery
An arrest affidavit identifies Zakrajsek as a teacher at Allapattah Flats K-8 school
stated via text he is a fifth grade teacher there
"The investigation is ongoing and the teacher will not be returning to the classroom," Martin stated
None of the alleged incidents happened at or involved the school
Mesiti said Zakrajsek had been at a friend’s home on Sunday “and apparently did get intoxicated to the point where the friend had to take him back to his own home.”
A woman identified by police as the victim stayed at a different location
The alleged criminal incidents reportedly happened after the woman woke Zakrajsek
Zakrajsek is accused of putting the woman in a choke hold to the extent she felt as if she was going to die
according to statements in the arrest affidavit
Zakrajsek is accused of grabbing a kitchen knife before telling the woman he didn’t need a gun to kill her
He reportedly told her to engage in a sexual encounter with him
which she said she did “because she believed that would get her out of this violent situation,” an affidavit states
Zakrajsek said he didn’t remember what happened
He said he went to a friend’s home to watch a game and drank beer and then rum and coke
“Ryan stated he remembers they were wrestling but is unsure what caused it,” an affidavit states
“Ryan said this was the worse (sic) he has ever been.”
Police petitioned the court to require that Zakrajsek surrender any firearms and ammunition he has
An attorney for Zakrajsek was not listed on the St

The Miami City Commission is fast-tracking the creation of the Allapattah Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA)
directing the city manager to complete all necessary approvals and secure funding for initial priority projects by Feb
commissioners reinforced their commitment to establishing the CRA
with Commissioner Damian Pardo sponsoring the measure and assuring District One Commissioner Miguel A
“Allapattah has an eclectic and rich history known for its culture
shoppes and marketplaces,” the directive states
but it also cites persistent challenges such as crime
homelessness and a lack of affordable housing that have displaced longtime residents and businesses
The push for an Allapattah CRA follows a July 2023 commission resolution that accepted a finding of necessity report that justified creating a CRA for the area
commissioners debated folding Allapattah into the Omni CRA – an agency established in 1987 to revitalize parts of Miami – but later determined a separate agency would better serve the neighborhood’s needs
The proposed boundaries of the Allapattah CRA stretch from Northwest 39th Street to the north
Northwest Seventh Avenue to the east and the Miami River to the south
commissioners anticipate revisiting the final steps toward launching the Allapattah CRA in coming weeks
15 resolution that first tasked City Manager Arthur Noriega with securing funding and engaging consultants
commissioners also agreed to defer extending the Omni CRA’s duration until a comprehensive plan for Allapattah was in place
Gabela emphasizing the need for a unified approach
“We’re going to do a global deal… we’re going to approve [this directive] to look at the possibility of doing an Allapattah CRA
already identifying where the funds are going to come from
what we would do is defer [the Omni CRA time extension] till all this gets settled as one deal,” Mr
I’m here and thank you for your leadership on this
Noriega pulled a related resolution on the Jan
23 agenda to claw back $2 million in tax increment financing revenues from the Omni CRA for the next five fiscal years for capital improvements
infrastructure repairs and affordable housing projects in Allapattah for discussion during the meeting
in the press of time the item was ultimately deferred until Feb

MIAMI – A 31-year-old man has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with a fatal fentanyl overdose that police say occurred outside a business in Miami’s Allapattah neighborhood last year
who is listed as homeless in his arrest report
was arrested by officers with the Miami Police Department and is accused of unlawfully distributing a narcotic substance that led to the October 2024 death of a man who collapsed after ingesting drugs laced with fentanyl
First responders were called to a home near the 2900 block of Northwest 17th Avenue around 8:30 a.m
after police said an unresponsive man was found outside a storefront in the area
where he was pronounced dead shortly after 9 a.m
Detectives said surveillance video from the scene showed the victim speaking with Rivera before sitting on a chair and appearing to ingest an “unknown quantity of narcotics,“ an arrest report stated
police said the victim fell from the chair and lost consciousness
They said Rivera was then seen taking something from the victim’s pocket and walking away
Officers processing the scene said they found a small plastic baggie containing white residue
A be-on-the-lookout alert was issued for a suspect matching Rivera’s description
which investigators said included a distinctive hat
They said he was located later that same day near Northwest 16th Avenue and 21st Street and agreed to speak with investigators
The Miami-Dade Medical Examiner’s Office later ruled that the victim died from acute combined drug toxicity
who was already in custody at Metrowest Detention Center on an unrelated charge
gave a recorded statement on Wednesday that was redacted from the publicly-released report
investigators said Rivera admitted he was at the scene and claimed the victim asked him for a “hit” of his narcotics following an argument
Authorities determined that Rivera knowingly distributed a pill containing fentanyl
investigators said they found probable cause to charge Rivera with unlawful distribution of a controlled substance causing death — a first-degree felony under Florida law

After several months of holding the Omni Community Redevelopment Agency hostage
Miami Commissioner Miguel Gabela — who has pushed for its expansion into Allapattah
the heart of his District 1 — looks like he is ready to compromise with a CRA all his own
Miami Commissioners last month directed City Manager Art Noriega to expedite the establishment of an Allapattah Community Redevelopment Agency and secure funding so that they can begin “priority projects” by the end of February
The proposed boundaries are Northwest 39th Street to the north
That’s guaranteed seed money of $10 million that can be leveraged to get more
He has previously said help like that is too little
too slow and that he wants to leverage the future TIF monies an expanded Omni CRA could generate for Allapattah
Allapattah is known for its diverse population of Central Americans and Caribbean immigrants
it has become “plagued in recent years by crime
which as resulted in the displacement of many longtime residents and businesses,” the resolution states
This should also pave the way for the extension of the Omni CRA
That will allow it to continue funding some projects that are already in the works
Read related: New shady deals found at Miami Omni CRA, tied to Alex Diaz de la Portilla
Gabela called it a “global deal” and said that once the Allapattah CRA is established and funding is identified
then he would support extending the time for the Omni CRA
“What we would do is defer [the Omni CRA extension] till all this gets settled as one deal,” Gabela said in an October meeting where the manager was directed to study the establishment of the Allapattah CRA
Holding the Omni CRA hostage got Gabela what he wanted
How much does anybody want to bet he’ll do it again

MIAMI – Miami police have arrested a suspect in connection with an October shooting in the city’s Allapattah neighborhood that left a man hurt
Police said officers were initially dispatched on Oct
24 to a home near the 1800 block of Northwest 42nd Street after a report of gunfire
where they found a man suffering from a graze wound on his right elbow
Detectives said the victim declined medical transport
but he shared his account of the incident with officers
describing an encounter he said left him “fearing for his life.”
A Miami police officer who responded to the scene reported that the victim was sitting in the passenger seat of a car outside the residence when he noticed a white or beige pickup truck speeding toward him
identified by police as 23-year-old Rolando Noel Canales
The victim told detectives that he quickly exited his vehicle and ran to the rear of the property to avoid being hit
Detectives said they later found six spent shell casings that belonged to a .380 caliber gun
A 2017 red Buick parked nearby had been struck three times
Investigators searched the area and found surveillance footage from a nearby Ring camera at a home where the shooting was reported
Police later confirmed that the Ring camera did not capture the shooting itself
they said a second victim reported hearing several shots and running toward the back of the property
The second victim later mentioned that Canales might’ve been linked to a woman named “Meche,” a mutual acquaintance whose ex-boyfriend was incarcerated
police said the second victim and his incarcerated friend had been on a three-way call with Meche when an unidentified man
crime scene technicians photographed the scene and recovered a black iPhone from near the victim’s vehicle
which authorities believe belonged to Canales
The second victim reported seeing Canales exit the vehicle and begin firing multiple shots toward him
forcing him to duck beneath the dashboard for cover
He said he briefly saw the truck speed away after the gunfire stopped
police said the victim explained that his friend’s former girlfriend was acquainted with the shooter and had recently visited their residence
The victim believed Canales might have acted out of jealousy
suspecting that his friend and the woman were spending time together while he was at work
detectives presented the victim with a photo lineup
where he identified Canales as the shooter
Police said Canales was taken into custody without incident around 11:30 a.m
detectives read Canales his Miranda rights before conducting an interview
Police said he denied the allegations but did not provide additional details about his whereabouts during the shooting
Jail records show he is facing one count of attempted murder with a firearm
Canales is being held without bond at the Metrowest Detention Center
A motive for the shooting remains unclear at this time

Miami is moving forward with its promise to create a community redevelopment agency (CRA) in Allapattah
with officials set to approve a study identifying signs of slum and blight
laying the legal groundwork for the revitalization plan
City commissioners are to vote on a resolution today (4/10) to formally accept a finding of necessity study for the proposed Allapattah CRA
declaring the historically underserved neighborhood meets statutory requirements for establishing a dedicated redevelopment agency
the plan will be sent to Miami-Dade County for final approval
unlocking the potential for significant investment and infrastructure improvements
The push for an Allapattah CRA follows a July 2023 commission resolution that accepted an initial finding of necessity that justified creating an agency for the area
After much debate about folding Allapattah into the existing Omni CRA
commissioners later determined a separate agency would better serve the neighborhood’s needs
the commission directed the city manager to hire consultants to prepare an updated finding of necessity with new specified boundaries
The proposed Allapattah CRA would span 1,661 acres
bounded on the north by State Road 112/Airport Expressway
on the east by Interstate-95 and Northwest Seventh Avenue on the south by the Miami River and on the west by Northwest 19th Avenue
Roughly 89% of the area falls within District One
represented by Commissioner Christine King
the city undertook a comprehensive analysis to evaluate the establishment of the proposed Allapattah CRA
Prepared by consulting firm BusinessFlare LLC
the study concluded that Allapattah meets the state’s criteria for both a slum and blighted area under Florida statutes
a critical step in determining the area’s eligibility for CRA designation and subsequent redevelopment initiatives
the study found that parts of the neighborhood show slum conditions that “endanger life or property,” while the broader area exhibits at least seven signs of blight
including defective or inadequate infrastructure
deterioration of site or other improvements
increased emergency calls and public property with adverse environmental conditions
“The presence of multiple qualifying factors highlights the urgent need for intervention to address economic distress
and physical degradation; and the establishment of the Allapattah CRA would provide the legal and financial framework to promote targeted redevelopment
attract private investment and improve the quality of life for residents,” the finding of necessity reads
Key subdistricts within the proposed CRA include the Miami Health District
the historic Main Street corridor known as “Little Santo Domingo,” and the Allapattah Industrial Area
was also flagged in the report as a critical but undermaintained asset
the area suffers from cracked and flooded roadways
aging housing and illegal dumping in public spaces
The report also cites elevated crime rates and frequent emergency calls as indicators of underlying social and economic instability
the study emphasized the neighborhood’s strengths: proximity to the airport and the river
and a deeply rooted immigrant community with vibrant Latin American and Caribbean cultural traditions
If the proposed CRA plan is accepted by the commission today
the next step is for the city to send the legislation to Miami-Dade County
collecting revenue and pursuing redevelopment initiatives tailored to Allapattah’s needs

After extensive debate on adding Allapattah to the Omni Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA)
city commissioners reached a consensus to create a separate
the Miami City Commission unanimously instructed City Manager Arthur Noriega to find funding and hire consultants to spearhead the establishment of an Allapattah CRA
the issue is to return to the commission for a formal vote
alongside another measure concerning extending the Omni CRA’s lifetime to ensure continued support for redevelopment efforts in both districts
established in 1987 to revitalize areas within its jurisdiction
the agency is seeking an extension until 2047 to fully capitalize on its funding and continue its projects
business support programs and other services
A key point of contention during discussions about the Omni CRA’s extension was a proposal to expand it to include Allapattah
This proposal emerged from a July 2023 commission resolution that extended the life and boundaries of the Omni CRA to cover 2,730 acres of Allapattah
A “finding of necessity” study had determined that Allapattah met eight of the 15 criteria for slum and blight under Florida’s CRA statute
commissioners deliberated whether including Allapattah in the Omni CRA was viable
considering both the financial implications and the challenge of managing such a large CRA
the consensus was that a separate agency dedicated solely to Allapattah would better serve the area’s specific needs
Noriega is to begin securing funding and engaging consultants to study formation of a new Allapattah CRA
The commission deferred the resolution to extend the Omni CRA’s duration pending the full plan for Allapattah
and they anticipated revisiting it in the new year
“We’re going to do a global deal as it was
and … look at the possibility of doing an Allapattah CRA
what we would do is defer [the Omni CRA time extension] till all this gets settled as one deal
everything’s ready and we’re all ready to vote
you get your extension and we get our Allapattah CRA with the funding
and all the terms,” said Commissioner Miguel A
Commissioner and Omni CRA Chair Damian Pardo expressed strong support

The black-and-white photographs by Colombian artist Miguel Angel Rojas
currently on display at Allapattah art space El Espacio 23
“It’s a very strong image of this young man
but also the resilience of the human figure,” she said
The human experience is difficult to capture in words
“Mirror of the Mind,” takes a solid crack at it through 150 artworks from over 120 artists
The show aims to capture the complexity of the human experience through figuration
a type of art that depicts real objects and the human figure
annually displays exhibitions entirely comprised of works from the collection of real estate developer Jorge Pérez
After last season’s textile exhibition featuring mainly abstract works
co-curators Hanna and Anelys Alvarez went the opposite direction this time around
Pérez has championed figurative artwork “even when it was not as trendy as it is now.”
The more time the co-curators spent sifting through artworks
the more they encountered pieces that would shape the show’s overarching themes
One of those pieces was the late Mexican artist Julio Galan’s self-portrait painted on mother of pearl
who died six years after he painted the work in 2000
READ MORE: Miami Beach approves funding boost for arts and culture groups to cover state funding shortfall
“A lot of his work was embedded in his identity and his own personal experiences
He was quite ahead of his time,” Hanna said
“There are key pieces along the way that always speak to us.”
The end result is an exhibition that feels like an emotional rollercoaster
lows and plateaus of life through sculptures
The show is divided into six sections meant to take visitors on a journey: Perception
“Those experiences are paradoxical in a way
but many times they coexist in life,” Alvarez said
but we have the capacity to heal and be resilient and enjoy pleasure.”
The show opens with a familiar yet anonymous figure
bronze sculpture by Spanish artist Fernando Sanchez Castillo
depicts the unidentified man who was famously photographed standing in front of a line of tanks in protest at Tiananmen Square in Beijing on June 5
The sculpture stands straight up at the entrance of the main gallery space “to confront the viewer,” Hanna said
“It’s this notion of how you perceive history and how history has been told to you,” Alvarez said
He remains in history as this mythical figure of this tank man
The “Perception” section of the exhibition deals with several images of historical figures
But when artist Larry Rivers saw a famous portrait of the French emperor standing in an “effeminate” pose
he painted his version of Napoleon’s portrait
called “The Second Greatest Homosexual.” (Which begs the question
Other works blur the lines of who -- or what -- we perceive to be as familiar faces
A series of Spanish artist Jorge Ribalta’s black-and-white photographs line the wall of a hallway
like an up-close image of a grimacing Gene Simmons from Kiss
Those aren’t real people in the photographs
Several artists throughout the show play with the use of figurines
dark room beside the Ribalta images stands a towering sculpture called “The Cellist” by Miami-based artist Reginald O’Neal
which Pérez purchased from last year’s Art Basel Miami Beach
is based on kitschy musical souvenirs O’Neal bought in New Orleans
The giant musician has his back turned to the viewer
a critique of racial disparities that persist in America today
called “Trauma,” references and reflects on the darkest parts of history and humanity
a body -- either dead or asleep -- lies in a desolate field nestled in dried flowers
It’s called “Pietà” by artist Anselm Kiefer
who grew up in post-World War II Germany and often confronts his country’s history in his work
Across from it are 23 close-up images of Jewish students taken from an old yearbook just before World War II
“It’s these haunting images of the past,” Hanna said
The themes of the “Trauma” section are perhaps best summed up with Ethiopian artist Aida Muluneh’s photographed self-portrait
The artist is almost entirely painted in white
“It addresses the impact of trauma on the body
It doesn’t matter how much white you use to cover,” Alvarez said
the suffering is still there haunting her.”
The heaviness dissipates as visitors move through “Introspection,” with works that depict moments of solitude
and into “Belonging,” a section dedicated to community
you think about it and then you of think about your place within the community,” Hanna said
the moments of the everyday and really a sense of belonging.”
Several works are displayed on the wall salon style
almost like how they would appear as decoration in someone’s living room
One bundle of artworks includes a colorful painting of a Haitian carnival by artist Philome Obin alongside neon-painted steel drums by Alvaro Barrington
women gossip while doing laundry and a Jewish family enjoys a Passover Seder
called “A Bond at the Edge between Solid and Liquid,” shows two women in bathing suits at the beach
Photographed portraits show families from around the world in their homes
In “Les amis à la chaussée,” a photograph by Malick Sidibé of Mali that translates to “the friends on the road,” a group of young people smile and embrace
The following “Healing” section is meant to feel especially cathartic
Several works show people with their arms stretched upwards
like in Yael Bartana’s “Redemption Now,” a neon light sculpture of two female figures raising their fists to the sky
Elizabeth Catlett’s “Webbed Women” sculpture of a female figure reaches upwards
an angel painted by Portia Zvavahera flies to the heavens
like in Didier Williams’ “Kisa n’ap fe ansamn,” a painting inspired by his desire to start a family with his husband
like in Maria Magdalena Campos-Pons’ Polaroid triptych “Above All Things,” which depicts elements of a cleansing ritual in honor of the Yoruba orisha
The three photographs show three sections of her body dressed in white: Her head with the outline of a house drawn on her face
her hands holding a plate of meringues and her feet surrounded by cracked coconuts
Water is a common symbol of spiritual cleansing
Dual images by iconic photographer Carrie Mae Weems show two women
situated in between the “Healing” and “Trauma” sections
is pitch black besides two projectors that show “The Fury,” a haunting double-channel video installation by Iranian artist Shirin Neshat
showing the same scenes from different perspectives
The film follows the journey of a young Iranian woman now living in the United States who remains traumatized by her time as a political prisoner
The co-curators created a loop within the exhibition
representing how moments of trauma and redemption happen simultaneously in peoples’ real lives
If you enter the video room through “Healing,” you exit into the “Trauma” section
The building’s second floor is dedicated to “Flesh,” the exhibition’s final section focused on the human body itself in its most primal -- and usually naked -- form
The artists featured in this section were unafraid to explore the body in all its weird glory
“Here we’re seeing the materiality of the body
On the floor is Brazilian artist Vera Chaves Barcellos’ “Epidermic Landscapes,” photographs of skin zoomed in so up-close they look like landscapes of an alien planet
Several artists in this section pushed the envelop on depicting social taboos in their work
Perhaps chief among them is artist duo Gilbert & George
Their bold 1996 work “Blood and Piss” sets the tone for this portion of the exhibition
a pop artist best known for her sculptures
embraced the female form with her drawing “Woman from Paris.” Next to it is Jim Dine’s “9 Little Flesh Paintings” of simple nipples
Painted in hues of pinks and fleshtones is Marta Minujin’s work of a reclining nude woman whose back is turned away from the viewer
“What are the cultural connotations of a body
Whether it’s a sexual connotation or talking about the carnal nature of the body
the exhibition will inspire viewers to “dig deeper” as they reflect on themselves and others
I feel like a show like this will bring you back down to who we are as humans,” Hanna said
and how that affects how you act going forward
I think that’s an important question for the future.”
the same week as a particularly divisive Election Day
adds to viewers’ interpretation of the show
and people go through different experiences depending on their context
but there are some things or emotions or experiences that we can all share,” Alvarez said

a nearly completed 237-unit apartment building
Lissette Calderon’s nearly completed multifamily project in Miami’s Allapattah scored a $63.5 million refinancing from billionaire Barry Sternlicht’s Starwood Property Trust
Miami Beach-based Starwood provided the bridge loan to Calderon’s Miami-based Neology Development Group. The new mortgage pays off a previous $57.5 million construction loan from Churchill Real Estate to build Fourteen Main Street Residences at 1470 Northwest 36th Street
A Berkadia team led by Charles Foschini and Christopher Apone arranged the financing
Neology secured the loan on the heels of last week’s 25 basis point interest rate cut by the Federal Reserve
Forbes pegs Sternlicht’s net worth at $2.8 billion
Fourteen Main Street Residences consists of a 14-story tower and a five-story lowrise building with a combined 237 apartments and roughly 6,000 square feet of ground-floor retail space
which are set to receive temporary certificates of occupancy in the first quarter of next year
SIGN UPThe project will feature a mix of one- and two-bedroom units ranging from 500 square feet to 1,000 square feet
Monthly rents are starting between $2,152 to $3,081
Fourteen Main Street Residences marks the third multifamily project developed in Allapattah by Neology, which Calderon founded in 2017. Her firm also completed The Julia
a 14-story building with 323 apartments at 1625 Northwest 20th Street; and No
a 13-story mid-rise building with 192 apartments at 1569 Northwest 17th Avenue
Neology owns Pier 19 Residences & Marina
The site was previously a failed condominium project called River Oaks Tower & Marina when Neology acquired the property for $61 million in 2018
In May, New York-based Apollo Asset Management provided a $54.5 million fixed-rate loan to Neology that refinanced a previous $52 million mortgage secured by the Pier 19 project
Last year, Neology bought a Miami River development site for $32.2 million where Calderon is planning a three-building complex with 1,250 apartments

records and real estate database Vizzda show
The assemblage is in the Miami Health District
which is anchored by the 153-acre UM/Jackson Memorial Medical Center complex
In 2020, an affiliate of Boston-based Taurus Investment Holdings, the seller of the strip mall and the bank building, paid $26 million and $4.5 million for the properties
An affiliate of Toronto-based Peakhill Equity Partners and Boston-based Congress Group
the strip mall was completed in 2015 on a nearly 1-acre site
Tenants include Dunkin’ and Quest Diagnostics
The vacant bank building was completed in 1976
Last year, Peakhill, Congress Group and Taurus filed a site plan application with the city of Miami to develop a 380-unit apartment project on the parking lot after abandoning plans for a medical office development
the joint venture renovated Shops of Civica with 20,000 square feet of retail on the ground floor and 40,000 square feet of medical offices in the upper two floors
University of Miami officials have not revealed any plans for the three-property assemblage
In late June, the University of Miami dropped $40 million for a Macy’s furniture store in Pinecrest
The school may be planning to convert the building into medical offices
but university officials have not commented on any specific plans
Last month, the school opened UHealth Doral Medical Center, a six-story medical office building at 8375 Northwest 53rd Terrace in Doral, within the Downtown Doral mixed-use complex
The medical center was built and is owned by Coral Gables-based Codina Partners

Youssef Megahed was booked into jail on a charge of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon
The 39-year-old was out on bond at the time of his arrest on charges in connection with an August burglary case in northwest Miami-Dade
Megahed’s latest arrest report lists his home address as a business in an industrial section of Miami’s Allapattah neighborhood; his August arrest report listed his home address as a since-demolished Miami Subs Grill in Riviera Beach
The latest crime the Egyptian national is accused of happened Monday at a business in Miami’s Liberty City neighborhood
The Miami Police Department arrest report states that the victim arrived at the business
to do renovation work “when he noticed the front door was open.”
the victim stated he was stabbed in his left eye
at which time he was able to wrestle the weapon away from the suspect,” police wrote
“The victim further stated that he recognized the suspect as a previous tenant of the property.”
“who was bleeding profusely from his left eye,” to Jackson Memorial Hospital for treatment
The building’s property manager gave the suspect’s name as “Youssef Samir” and police were able to determine Megahed’s identity
A detective canvassing the area “discovered a grey and blue screwdriver in the rear
easternmost side of the parking lot” of a neighboring business
Police said surveillance video showed a “scuffle” and Megahed fleeing “as he carried a blue container or bucket.”
police said they went to Megahed’s listed address at 1565 NW 28th St
A search of the address conducted pursuant to a warrant revealed a key clue
“A multi-colored checkered shirt matching the description observed on the surveillance footage of the clothing article worn by (Megahed) on the date of the incident was located inside,” the report states
“The shirt has suspected dry blood on it.”
Megahed’s statements to police were redacted from his arrest report
He was previously arrested in August by officers of what was then the Miami-Dade Police Department after he was accused of breaking into a business he apparently once rented at 3045 NW 62nd St
in the unincorporated Gladeview area and removing a fridge
claiming he had “the misconception that he he still had rights to the property due to the business name still being on the property” and said he was “given permission” to be there by the previous owner
and was out on bond at the time of his arrest Tuesday
Miami police didn’t elaborate on the nature of the real estate fraud allegations and it does not appear that Megahed is yet facing charges of that nature
“urge anyone who’s had interactions with Megahed” to call the agency’s Economic Crimes Unit at 305-603-6280
he was being held in the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center with a bond listed as “to be set.”
A developer plans a mixed-use residential project on city-owned property bringing workforce and affordable housing to Allapattah
together with a new public library in the same building
the contract purchaser and developer of the site at 1785 NW 35th St.
plans to build eight-story Dulce Vida Allapattah that will be home to 230 residential units
includes an adjacent parking garage for up to 372 vehicles
will be replaced by a new 8,494-square-foot library
The city’s Urban Development Review Board unanimously recommended approval with two conditions: Reevaluate the design of the entrance to the library on the northeast corner of the building to enhance and celebrate the library entrance
and ensure the treatment of the garage façade conceals all internal elements
The developer needs a special warrant approval to build a “community facility”; the public library
The site is between Northwest 36th and 35th streets and east of Northwest 18th Avenue
It consists of nine separately platted lots that are under developed with a one-story library constructed in 1963 and approximately 109 off-street parking spaces
The site has vehicular access on Northwest 18th Avenue and Northwest 35th Street
said the overall development will include 310,664 square feet of floor lot ratio
In a letter to the city she wrote: “The project responds to the existing context of the area
which is surrounded by a variety of uses and is in close proximity to Miami Jackson Senior High School
Many students currently utilize the library’s services and will be able to continue to take advantage of the library in close proximity through approval of this warrant
“The project contributes to the area’s pedestrian experience with improved streetscape and beautiful new
“The proposed structure will enhance the area
increase pedestrian activity and encourage use of a beautiful new library … Project will beautify the pedestrian experience and provide sufficient parking and maneuverability within the site,” she wrote
the Miami Parking Authority has confirmed that there will be 15 on-street spaces available to the project
told the review board the City of Miami owns the property
the city commission approved a development plan for the site that requires workforce and affordable housing
The commission recently approved $15 million for the project from the city’s affordable housing bond program
The apartments will be marketed as follows:
■40% of the units at 60% of the Area Median Income (AMI)
The project is designed by architectural firm Behar Font & Partners
described some of the details of the overall project to the board
The new structure will rise on the long and narrow property
and the library will be built into the corner of the main structure
with some studio units on the ground floor as well
Font said the U-shaped building helps to create a great courtyard in back
with all amenities at the ground floor facing the courtyard area
He said the project includes “a ton of balconies,” screening for the garage levels
and artistic murals including an eight-story tall mural on one side
The main entrance includes the leasing offices
“Very thorough presentation,” said board member Agustin Barrera
“It’s good to see projects like this built in these neighborhoods
This is one of the areas that really needs this type of housing
We keep hearing about all the shortages for workforce and affordable housing
so it’s good to see projects like this,” he said
“For such a long project I like the way the massing is broken up
The fact there are distinct entrances from where the library is happening and the residences
“The only thing I think is a little challenging is the location of the elevator core
It’s such a long walk from one end to the other because you’re at one extreme … you basically have to walk the whole length of the building to get to the units,” he said
I think it’s a good project and really needed in that area.”
and the treatment of the corner was very successful
“I wish you would have carried a little more of the detail into that lobby entrance
It just seems like an afterthought … for the library
It was just like a voided corner there that’s been chamfered and not really thought out
as detailed as you’ve delineated the rest … if you could maybe revisit that entrance,” she said
you’ve shown it on the rest of the project
“I really like to see these types of projects come before us; very much needed
“This is a very special place that should be celebrated more and articulated more
maybe you take that language from the entrance to the library and add more glazing

MIAMI – Police say an 18-year-old Miami man was apologetic after carjacking a woman at gunpoint after trying to carjack another in the city’s Allapattah neighborhood Friday night
into custody on six felony charges a few hours later
Ramirez first approached a woman getting out of her car in the 2000 block of Northwest 27th Street and told her
(Ramirez) kept asking for the vehicle’s key
which she had left in the center cupholder area,” an arrest report states
Authorities said the woman went inside her home to tell her father what happened
Police said as he went outside and got in his daughter’s car
Ramirez pulled up in another woman’s vehicle and told him
The report states that he had carjacked that woman at gunpoint as she went to the area to drop off her 18-month-old son at her sister-in-law’s house
pointed a pistol at her and demanded her vehicle
Police said she pleaded with Ramirez to let her get her daughter out of the car first

MIAMI – Officers arrested a Miami daycare teacher’s assistant after a co-worker — and a surveillance camera — caught her subjecting a 6-year-old boy to a barrage of abuse Monday
Miami police said before Marlene Carballo was even put in handcuffs
she had already been fired from her job at Interamerican Learning Center
she had only been on the job for nine days and passed all background checks
shows Carballo trying to force the boy to sit on a chair “by pushing his shoulders down multiple times and flicking his ear.”
An arrest report states that the video shows Carballo then pulling the boy by the arm
forcibly sitting him on the ground “while she sits on a chair behind him and wraps her legs around him so he can’t move.”
(Carballo) hits the victim three times with her right hand and once with her left hand,” police wrote
“(She) then grabs the victim’s wrist and forces his hand to hit himself approximately ten times
(Carballo) is then seen grabbing the victim’s arms and forcing them down in between his legs.”
Police said Carballo then stood up and pulled the boy up
pushed him “against a cabinet” and hit him again
the boy’s therapist saw what was happening and intervened
Police said she went into the daycare director’s office holding the boy and told her
that “she needs to get rid of that teacher,” and
the daycare director called Carballo into her office and fired her
Police said they went to Carballo’s home to bring her to the Miami Police Department for an interview
The arrest report states that Carballo claimed “she was just holding” the boy so he didn’t hit her
she continued to deny hitting him,” it states
Authorities said she “finally” made an admission
had nothing to say to Local 10 News when she posted her $3,000 bond to get out of the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center
A Local 10 photographer asked him about the abuse allegations that Miami police say were caught on camera
staff at Interamerican Learning Center said in part
“One of our newly hired employees was observed physically abusing a child in our elementary school
The act was witnessed by several therapists who were working in the classroom at the time and who reported it to the director.”
The center’s director told Local 10 News that the boy is doing better and has been coming to the center since he was a baby
