ALLENDALE — A $17.5 million municipal budget was approved at an April 24 council meeting
The budget is up $807,375 from $16.7 million in 2024
The amount to be raised by taxes is $11.1 million
Residents will experience an increase of $0.23 per $100 assessed valuation over the 2024 tax rate
the borough’s tax rate is decreasing 3.49%
"The tax rate is decreasing because of higher assessments," Altano said
"If residents are being taxed on a higher assessment
then it allows for the tax rate to decrease
Our tax rate is also decreasing because we have increased our other revenues significantly."
One notable increase is in cell tower lease revenue
"We had the opportunity to take back ownership of our cell tower and start receiving funds through leases," said Mayor Amy Wilczynski
"Our cell tower revenue has now become one of our main sources of miscellaneous revenue."
The municipality's top three appropriations are for public safety (police
ambulance) at $3.3 million (29%); public works/garbage at $2.3 million (13%); and insurance at $2.3 million (13%)
Altano said New Jersey State Health Benefits took a 16.3% hike in 2025 on top of a 7% increase in 2024 and a 24% increase in 2023
The borough completed its community center this year with help from a $750,000 grant
Among its capital projects in the coming year is the final stage of its Streetscape Project
replacing pavers and lights and planting new trees in its business district on West Allendale Avenue
Taxes make up 68% of the borough sources of revenue
Schools account for another 57% of the municipal tax dollar
split between Allendale's elementary district (36%) and its share of Northern Highlands Regional High School costs (21%)
these budgets are overseen separately by their respective boards of education
and are not under municipal control or jurisdiction
A 2025 Budget Newsletter on the borough's website

FAIRFAX — Wes Bommer
spent years under the ocean as a submariner
he chooses to spend much of his time in prison
not only in the company of inmates but also with tens of thousands of honeybees
The Wagener resident's weekly hangout of choice is Allendale Correctional Institution
and much of Bommer's attention is focused on winged
famously busy creatures clad mostly in yellow and black
He leads a program through which inmates eagerly learn the basics — and beyond — of beekeeping
April and May tend to be the busiest time of year
Bommer, who came to the Aiken area to work at the Savannah River Site, is known to some local residents as the writer of a longtime monthly column: "Bommer's Bees." He reached his 81st birthday in April and has a beekeeping background that covers more than 30 years
"I pollinated a 4,000-acre produce farm for 25 years
he heads to the the prison almost every Thursday — a 90-minute trip one way — to one of the South's poorest
She spent years as a volunteer at ACI leading a quilting class and only stepped down once her health problems posed too much of a challenge
The beekeeper of the house offered a few thoughts on the value of such programs
we went in and it was like a job interview
They were asking me about the equipment that I use and my experience and what have you
Not typical questions from a beginning bee class."
A couple of books and a subscription to a bee magazine had already helped equip some inmates with food for thought
Bommer now teaches inmates who have at least a little prior knowledge on the topic at hand
They work in an environment that includes all the traditional elements of beekeeping
from protective clothing to fully occupied
with thousands of bees looking to do their various jobs and to punish anyone who approaches a hive without a proper level of respect
His current group of inmates numbers about 15
"and then there's two classes over in the training center
The end product — honey — can be sold to prison employees and sales may now be allowed to visitors as well
"and part of the money comes back into the program," Bommer said
The bee program now includes dozens of alumni who "did their time" and are now back in civilian life
and some of those individuals keep in touch with Bommer
"I see these men grow and I see them becoming things
cars and houses and have been re-married and have got kids
"They don't have the disciplinary problems that they do in some of these other units … In all those years of beekeeping
and that's because he took some honey back to the barracks — the dorms — and they put him out and told me about it
a few yards from an area where inmate-tended gardens and a greenhouse provide pollen options
and the prison itself is less than a mile from cotton fields where bees can do acres and acres of business
with the local cotton crop providing a boost in honey production
Hummer's involvement at ACI dates back about 13 years, in his estimation, when he was outgoing president of the South Carolina Beekeepers Association
and the ACI warden requested help with training
he can offer some insight on the men attending his classes
"Most of these people made those mistakes when they were young and under the influence of something
We only see and hear on TV about this five or 10% that are real thugs
There's a lot of good people in there that … screwed up and now they're paying the price."

— Allendale Public Schools is trying again with its bond proposal in this May election
The school district superintendent explained that $88 million would go to upgrades like security
and the addition of a new multi-purpose facility
"You can't do major capital projects from the general fund
We just don't get enough money from the state," Allendale Public Schools Superintendent Dr
Allendale Public Schools is proposing several capital improvement projects across the district
"The requests we're making are going to last for decades," the superintendent said
Superintendent Garth Cooper laid out a few of the planned projects if the proposal passes
and additions to current buildings like the early childhood center
those type of things that will enhance our community and make this a better place for the people of Allendale," Cooper said
Cooper explained that some other upgrades include making the cafeteria larger
and new and/or renovated baseball and softball fields
"We don't want a program that's just good enough for just this many kids
and resources that draw in more kids and create more opportunities for our students," Cooper added
The superintendent added that the new multi-purpose field house will be open to the public from 7-9 am on weekdays
He says the facility will be a standalone building allowing access for the public
the millage would extend several more years after the 2033 end date if the bond passes
because that's the financial system that the state of Michigan has set up right now," Cooper added
Allendale voters will have a chance to weigh in on May 6

— An Ottawa County school district accidentally released the email addresses of high school students as part of a Freedom of Information Act request
Allendale Public Schools sent an email warning students and guardians that 11th graders' email addresses were accidentally released as part of a batch of information sent by the district
Cooper explained that a parent requested directory information for parent contacts
but when the school fulfilled the request it “inadvertently included the school-issued email addresses of our 11th-grade students." No other email addresses of students were included in the information
The superintendent added this request came from a community-led advocacy group that supports the district's bond proposal on the May ballot
The school district is asking voters to approve an $88.1 million bond proposal to build a new multi-purpose field house
“One member of the group used the list to send an email intended for 11th-grade parents and guardians — but because the student addresses were mistakenly included
the message was delivered to 11th-grade students,” Cooper wrote
The superintendent said the school district takes this issue seriously and plans to review Freedom of Information Act requests response procedures to ensure this doesn’t happen again
The district will host a community information night on the bond proposal Thursday evening inside the Oakwood Intermediate Boardroom

White-tailed deer can be found all over the state of New Jersey, from fields to forests to backyards. They are described by New Jersey Fish and Wildlife as a "major component of the landscape throughout all but the most urbanized areas of the state."
one buck has gained the attention of many residents in a Bergen County town for its bright white coat
which an Allendale resident has named Pete
Piebald deer stand out from most white-tailed deer due to their peculiar coat, which has varying amounts of white fur, from some on the legs or sides to almost entirely white, Fish and Wildlife says
This coloration is the result of an inherited genetic trait
which also can cause distinct physical conditions such as skeletal or internal organ deformities
but piebald deer have some brown fur and brown eyes
Allendale resident James Molzan has been keeping an eye on a local piebald deer for a few years now
watching him develop from a youngster to an eight-point buck
A self-described outdoorsman and longtime hunter
I named him Pete the piebald," Molzan said
"There's different areas where he hangs out
and he sticks out like a sore thumb because he's white ..
Pete's name has caught on around town over the last couple of years
saying the name Pete has taken off among Allendale residents
because everybody just runs and takes pictures and looks up the meaning of 'piebald,'" said Cusato
who typically sees Pete a couple of times a month
Though he tends to hang out near Brookside School
he occasionally makes his way into Cusato's yard
mingling with her resident herd of white-tailed deer
It makes you happy to see him," Cusato said
"It also kind of stresses me out because of the traffic and the deer
Elsewhere in the state, a pair of piebald deer named Snowflake and Winter had their moment in the spotlight in 2022 after gaining attention from the residents of Eatontown
Pete is the second piebald deer that Molzan
About 10 years ago he saw a white doe hanging around his house
He typically sees Pete at least once a week
a lot of people talk about him and take pictures

1/24Allendale hosts undefeated Greenville in high school boys basketball .st1{fill-rule:evenodd;clip-rule:evenodd;fill:#2a2a2a}By Patrick Nothaft | pnothaft@mlive.comALLENDALE
MI – Less than 24 hours removed from a deflating two-point loss to Kenowa Hills
Allendale trailed by six points midway through the fourth quarter of Tuesday’s boys basketball matchup with unbeaten Greenville
and the Falcons appeared destined for another tough defeat
But with the little gas left in their tank
the Falcons found the energy for a late rally and stunned Greenville
ending the Yellow Jackets’ quest for history in the process
“I was incredibly proud of their effort,” Allendale coach David Brown said
so credit to Kenowa yesterday; they played really hard
but we didn’t have a great practice Sunday preparing for them
and they played about as hard as I’ve seen
Just a complete buy-in on the defensive end and just playing team basketball overall
I give them all the credit for responding and bottling up all that energy and using it for good.”
PHOTOS: See our gallery from the Greenville at Allendale game
A 14-0 fourth-quarter run proved to be the difference
as Allendale turned a 51-45 deficit into a 59-51 lead with less than two minutes left
“I think it’s just a total buy-in to understanding what the game plan is,” Brown said of the keys to his team’s 14-0 run
and so we’re really just trying to alleviate the shooting on the outside and limit them to one shot
“My assistant Jeremy (Wiersema) tracks our stops
and we try to get three of those a game and stack them on top of each other
and a big part of that is limiting them to one shot and getting the defensive rebounds.”
Senior standout Alex Genuise sparked the run with a 3-pointer and a layup
followed by another 3 from junior Kaleb Gould that put Allendale ahead 53-51 and gave the Falcons their first lead since 38-37 midway through the third quarter
Layups from Gould and senior Andrew Ashbay capped the run
but Greenville responded with a pair of old-fashioned 3-point plays from seniors Braylon Haist and Zeke Robinet that cut the Yellow Jackets’ deficit to 59-56
Allendale made it a two-possession game with a pair of Genuise free throws
and the Falcons would maintain a multi-possession lead the rest of the way by sinking their last eight foul shots
To say that the current campaign has been tough for the Falcons would be a massive understatement, after the team grieved the loss of senior Jacksen Fitton
That experience put basketball into perspective and has helped the team stay calm in moments that would rattle most student-athletes
“Just our story of this season – losing Jacksen at the beginning of the season – these guys have been through so much more than any high school student should have to go through
so it’s one of the most resilient groups with how they’ve been able to pick themselves up and stay together,” Brown said
‘It’s just basketball at the end of the day
“I truly believe that when these guys buy into how good they can be
The 6-foot-3 Genuise led Allendale with 23 points
“We go as far as he goes,” Brown said of his star senior
but the big thing in the offseason was getting him to believe he can be a great two-way player
When people see how hard he plays on the defense event
that motivates them to play just as hard on both sides of the ball.”
Senior teammate Hudson Kragt added 18 points
Senior Drew Ashbay battled foul trouble much of the night
but still finished with seven points and three rebounds
All 12 of the Falcons reveled in the victory
with their postgame celebration echoing through the back hallways of the Allendale gymnasium
“(Greenville) has got a great program over there,” Brown said
I told the guys that we’ve got to put 32 minutes together to be in it
and we said that when we were down one going into the fourth
“I have a lot of respect for (Greenville coach Joel Visser) and his program and what they’ve done
just really proud of our effort and how we responded coming off the loss yesterday and just using that to kind of build into the end of the season when it really matters.”
Greenville’s first loss of the year snaps a 17-game winning streak and leaves the Yellow Jackets two victories short of their program-best 19-0 start in 1972
“They were better tonight,” Visser said of Greenville
“There are really no excuses for us other than that
I’m disappointed for our seniors because we had a special thing going
we’ve got to wake up and come back for more.”
The Yellow Jackets battled foul trouble all night
with starting forward Zeke Robinet picking up his third foul in the opening seconds of the second quarter and his fourth personal early in the third quarter
Teammates Braden Latimer and Sully Witt also had three fouls at halftime
which has been solid all season and kept the Yellow Jackets in the game on Tuesday
Noah Long and Kyle Graber combined for seven points off the bench
while senior wing Jaxon Ingles led the way with 15 points and three rebounds
and fellow junior Michael Lindquist contributed 13 points
Greenville struggled with turnovers much more than it did a 72-56 win over Allendale back on Jan
“We had 10 turnovers at half against their zone
It’s not like they’re pressing us and running and jumping and flying all over the place,” Visser said
“We were just careless with the basketball
The points per possession are all of a sudden fading
7-1 River Cities Alliance) still sits in first place in the conference standings heading into Friday’s game at Kenowa Hills in a rematch of the Yellow Jackets’ 52-37 win on Jan
so we’ve got to just kind of reset the mindset back to keep the main thing the main thing
regroup and go play a good Kenowa team that fights and battles with everybody.”
6-2) moves to within one game of Greenville heading into Friday’s home game against Sparta
