Allentown Association volunteer John Santomieri
holds a tray of perennial flowers as volunteer Laine Walnicki
and Laine Walnicki plant perennial flowers in a tree bed on Allen Street on Saturday
A tree bed at Virginia and Allen streets contains signs from a nearby business owner instructing that nothing should be planted there by Allentown Association volunteers
as volunteers plant flowers to beautify Allen Street in an effort that the Allentown Association calls “Gardens and Rainbows.”
Volunteers across Buffalo are planting seeds in community gardens
trees along streets and flowers in sidewalk containers
What city resident wouldn’t welcome this abundance of public beautification
successfully applied for a grant that – among other things – paid for 4,000 plants to be allocated to tree wells up and down Allen Street and Elmwood Avenue
These are perennials intended as much to protect the stability of the trees’ limited growing area as they are to provide streetside color
square beds were planted after Allen Street was redesigned 2019-2023
tree beds along the streetscape will lack those perennials because adjacent business owners don’t want any plantings – at least not any perpetrated by the Allentown Association – in front of their storefronts
Allentown Association board member and former president Patty MacDonald uproots flowers on Allen Street to replace them with new perennials on Saturday
An explanation should start with how the big planting – larger than any attempted by the Association in recent memory – came about
I must reveal that I am a former Association board member (approx
2001-04) and have participated in many community plantings throughout Allentown
Residents and business owners of Buffalo's Allentown neighborhood say it's a safe
Association board member and former board president Patty MacDonald explains that it started with a large grant meant mainly for building improvements
As MacDonald told me in a recent interview
“The Allentown Association administered a BMSI (Buffalo Main Street Improvement) grant for facade improvements and other renovations for property owners in Allentown
the Allentown Association is eligible for streetscape funds
So we decided to spend the streetscape funds – $25,000 – on this project that we’re calling Gardens and Rainbows
“The rainbow part of it is prisms that are going to be attached to the light poles all up and down Allen Street – when the sun hits them
Those are being fabricated now and should be up by the end of May
and this is all funded through that BMSI grant.”
You may remember that The Buffalo News’ Deidre Williams reported on this project in her April 19 story about how the neighborhood was recovering in the wake of a series of tragedies
including the murders of Mickey Harmon and Jordan Celotto and two devastating fires
It’s about flowers and how they – like everything – can be politicized
the plants were the only way left to protect Allen Street’s dozens of new tree beds because fences or other hardscaping had been ruled out by Buffalo’s Department of Public Works
“When the Allen Street improvement project was designed
those tree beds were supposed to have 4-inch granite curbs around them to hold the soil and the mulch in
If we plant very hardy perennials that are ground covers
and it’ll hold all the mulch in place and cut down on weeds
But some business owners are refusing the plantings
owner of Buffalo Big Print/Allen Street Gallery
“We pretty much got looped in very last minute on that
and also the 24 hours notice to get things out of there that were already in the beds.”
MacDonald says a letter was sent to the businesses about the plantings
“There’s a big old communication breakdown in Allentown
The businesses never get included in anything and never get told information until the last minute
we’re expected to keep everything maintained
So that’s a point we’ve been trying to prove for 14 months.”
was charged with choosing the plant varietals
He maintains that “the maintenance plan is taken on by the Allentown Association
The understanding is that the Association is building a 100-gallon watering rig that will better facilitate going up and down the street watering the tree beds
the goal of the planting and the design itself is to outcompete weeds with plants that enjoy really tough conditions.”
This is a time of transition in Buffalo’s oldest preservation district
Santomieri also notes that the beds will be staked off to help fend off cars that – because of Allen Street’s redesign – park on the same level as the trees
will create the impression of an interrupted field of color
“There’s two kind of concentric rings for each tree bed,” Santomieri explains
“The first inner ring is a hardy 3-foot perennial that prefers −or tolerates
the exterior of each tree bed is a plant that’s akin to a ground cover – that has a mat or creeping form or habit
so that at any certain point of the season
at least something per bed will be flowering.”
this may sound like a reasonable landscaping project
the plan wasn’t adequately communicated to Schwalenberg
who has formed the group Shop Allen Street
he’s submitted a mission statement and a comprehensive list of what he sees as Allen Street’s most pressing issues to Mayor Christopher Scanlon and other city officials
Clearly – and understandably – flower plantings are not his main concern
Allen Street storefront owners must vie with break-ins
the mental health issues of many who traverse the corridor
incessant litter and everything else that comes with a dense downtown neighborhood
But as a longtime Allentown resident and gardener
I’m looking forward to seeing the tree bed plantings mature – it will take a while
of Allen Street’s large concrete containers
There is a danger that those who advocate for an evolved gardening philosophy will undervalue the homely human benefits that have fed the souls of home gardeners for centuries
and nobody disputes the organization’s right to fill them with plants
Those will be hardy perennials – the grant requires that money be used for beautification that lasts longer than one season
I also look forward to a time when the Allentown Association
at long last finds a way to better work with businesses
I hope businesses do their part to make that happen

— More than a hundred protesters in Allentown demonstrated Thursday night against President Donald Trump and U.S
Ryan Mackenzie as part of nationwide May Day protests
where Lehigh County Democratic Committee Executive Carmen Bell told the crowd she was “outraged … at the bastardization of the rule of law.”
anybody who will listen to you … we’re in the fight of our lives here,” Bell said
Mayor Matt Tuerk urged protesters to “make sure everyone hears you in Allentown” before they started walking toward the office Mackenzie
ho/Donald Trump has got to go,” and “Show me what democracy looks like."
But one new chant kept making its way back to the top of the playlist: “No kings
Many drivers showed their support as protesters snarled traffic
but the group also drew at least a few middle fingers
John’s UCC Fullerton in Whitehall Township
led a chant as protesters passed by the Da Vinci Science Center
just across the street from their destination in the Butz Corporate Center
Davis told LehighValleyNews.com he is “participating in as many protests as I can to stand for the marginalized
to stand for government workers that are being treated unfairly
to stand for the core of our democracy that's being dismantled.”
“We have to speak up against the flagrant violation of our constitution,” Davis said
The Trump Administration is facing more than 200 lawsuits challenging his sweeping executive actions on immigration and deportations
Davis said he was heartened to see “more resistance” and called for protesters to “keep the pressure on” Mackenzie
“We have to change things now,” Davis said
The crowd demonstrated outside Mackenzie's and McCormick’s downtown office for a short time
during which they demanded face time with the congressman
The group then took over the Soldiers and Sailors monument for a bit
with the rally dying out about 90 minutes after its start
did not directly answer when asked whether the congressman had any plans for an in-person town hall
Instead, Armstrong referred LehighValleyNews.com to Mackenzie’s telephone town hall in March and a CNN town hall in April
at which he and three other Congress members fielded questions from voters in their districts during a 90-minute program
Armstrong also didn’t answer questions about protesters' concerns over Trump’s immigration policies and tariffs
He called the demonstration “absolutely not newsworthy” because the congressman’s office has become the site of frequent protests since its opening in February
Protesters demonstrated outside Mackenzie’s office as about 250 people held a May Day rally in Bethlehem
Both came hours after another candidate entered the race to challenge Mackenzie in 2026

Senate Bill 367 was passed with unanimous support out of the Senate Intergovernmental Operations Committee that he chairs
SB 367 would enable independent auditors to access tax information from businesses in the NIZ to conduct required audits
“I’ve been fighting for more transparency and accountability from the NIZ for more than two years
and I think real progress is finally being made
I appreciate that my Democratic colleagues supported these reforms

You get frustrated because...it doesn’t go in and then you can veer away a little bit
You’ve got to be willing to pay a price to score a goal.”
The Rocket goaltending picture got stronger when the Montreal Canadiens returned Cayden Primeau to Laval yesterday. Primeau had been backing up Jakub Dobeš with the Habs
who were eliminated from the Stanley Cup Playoffs by Washington earlier this week
Primeau originally joined the Rocket just after the Christmas break and went 21-2-2 with a 1.96 goals-against average and .927 save percentage
earning a share of the Harry “Hap” Holmes Memorial Award as Laval tied Syracuse for the fewest goals against in the regular season
Primeau joins rookie Jacob Fowler
who has won Laval’s first two playoff games against Cleveland
Bears head coach Todd Nelson has a deep list of reserves
and he is making it clear that he is willing to make lineup changes in the team’s series against the Phantoms
Hershey will need to win at least once at PPL Center to keep its season going
Defensemen Brad Hunt and Andrew Perrott and forwards Garrett Roe, Brennan Saulnier and Dalton Smith are among the options that Nelson has
along with several prospects who have joined the team in recent weeks
“We’ll talk about personnel first,” Nelson said after Game 2
After they managed just 20 shots and allowed two shorthanded goals in the loss
Nelson said the Phantoms outworked his team
“We’ll have to look at guys who want to put the work boots on,” said Nelson
They (the Phantoms) came in determined right from the drop of the puck
I don’t care where they finished in the standings.”
“We played Phantoms hockey,” head coach Ian Laperriere said after Friday’s Game 2
I’m not ashamed of saying that I’m taking pages out of his (Nelson’s) book.”
Laperriere has often praised how Hershey plays the game and has outlined that his team needs to model itself after the Bears
The Phantoms’ size and their willingness to use it frustrated Hershey
Lehigh Valley made smart puck plays and established a playoff style
“We all know jobs have to be done,” said Zayde Wisdom
whose two shorthanded goals in Game 2 sparked the Phantoms
Now the challenge is to keep doing that back on home ice
“We know what we’re facing,” said Laperriere

Flyers prospect Zayde Wisdom showed up in a big way for the Phantoms as they secured their Game 2 victory and tied up the series with Hershey
Last night saw the Phantoms take big step forward in their division semifinal matchup with Hershey
responding after a tough loss in the opener and coming away with a
The Phantoms’ offense looked much more commanding at even strength — a really notable change from their series opener performance — and while they did manage to pot one goal at even strength
The lack of discipline from the Phantoms throughout this postseason has been much lamented
and there’s been a real feeling that they’ve been playing with fire
with a continued inability to keep themselves out of the box
Last night saw them give up one power play goal
but still manage to outscore the Bears on the power play
in an effort that was somewhat singular — that is
it was on two well pressured breakout plays that the Phantoms were able to send a pair of their forwards heading down-ice on the rush
and it was twice the Zayde Wisdom was able to get one by Hunter Shepard shorthanded
And the fact that Wisdom was able to step up for the team in this way should not come as a shock
for us,” Phantoms head coach Ian Laperriere said postgame
he’s a kid who came to our camp and told me this summer ‘I’ll come to camp and make your team and you won’t be able to take me out.’ A lot of guys are telling me that
He’s been walking the walk and he’s one of our leaders in that room and I couldn’t be happier
And this echos what Laperriere has been saying about Wisdom since the real resurgence of his game kicked off back in December
He’s been doing well to get himself on the scoresheet
which is certainly impressive in its own right
which helps to raise the level of play of whoever he’s paired with
He might not be one of the big names on this roster
might not be putting up the biggest and flashiest of numbers
but he’s done some remarkable work to rebuild his game at this level
and to make himself an integral part of this offense
He’s in a really positive spot with his game
and he’s stepping up for them when they need him most

Cal Petersen was huge in relief and the Lehigh Valley Phantoms frustrated the Hershey Bears at ever turn
winning game three in their best-of-five series 4-2
Cal Petersen came in relief and stopped 15 shots
and the Lehigh Valley Phantoms flustered the visiting Hershey Bears for a thrilling 4-2 win Sunday at PPL Center
The Phantoms now lead the best-of-five series two games to one
First period: 11:23- Jacob Gaucher (Unassisted) (SHG)
Second period: 3:03- Andrew Perrott (Matt Strome
Third period: 14:09- Olle Lycksell (Emil Andrae)
The Phantoms didn’t score on their first power play
but then gave up two power plays to Hershey
who seemed to gain some momentum from the kill
The Bears had a two-on-one nixed by Adam Ginning but a somewhat iffy tripping call led to another short-handed situation
And as has been the case the last two games
Jacob Gaucher broke up a play and got in on Hunter Shepard
then beating him with a nifty little play to give Lehigh Valley an important 1-0 lead
It was just Lehigh Valley’s third shot of the game as both teams had a tougher than usual time hitting the net
Breaking News: Gaucher is bringing the storm ⛈️#RallyTheValley | #LVvsHER | #LVPhantoms pic.twitter.com/CSCgSMSzFe
The effectiveness of the penalty kill has to be renting some rooms in the psyche of Hershey
whose power play prowess against Lehigh Valley makes this past season’s Philadelphia’s power play look like the Gretzky-led Oilers power plays of the ’80s
Perhaps the biggest kill came late in the second period when the Phantoms closed ranks and gave Cal Petersen (more on him later) some much needed help with some shot blocks and crisp clears
Clearly it was frustrating the hell out of Hershey who botched another power play in the third
The Phantoms and Bears got some hate built up in game two
and didn’t take long to show that vitriol towards each other early
With both teams starting their fourth lines
the Phantoms threw their weight around before a small scrum started after the first whistle
Lehigh Valley’s first power play came courtesy of a strong shift by Givani Smith and his linemates
getting a good shot against Shepard who made the stop
Hershey tied things up on an Andrew Perrott shot early in the second
The shot looked relatively innocent but Gahagen didn’t get it
Perry comes through in a big way in his Calder Cup Playoffs debut!🍎Strome🍏Limoges https://t.co/DxxCxltila pic.twitter.com/xs5u5h1r4k
Hershey seemed to kick into another gear that the Phantoms simply didn’t match for the first half of the second
Ivan Miroshnichenko beat Gahagen on the glove side on what looked to a shot that deflected off something
Lehigh Valley needed some quality shifts in response
Hershey outshot the Phantoms 7-2 and needed a spark to get back into the game
Olle Lycksell (who had a great quasi-breakaway in the second) nearly delivered but Shepard was up to the challenge
Meanwhile seconds later Hershey’s golden chance was denied by an excellent stop by Gahagen who got enough of it
as Gahagen (who accidentally flopped earleir in the second that looked more comical than hurtful) injured something possibly in his lower body that caused him to leave the game with 8:48 to go in the second
Cal Petersen was brought in cold and given an extremely difficult position
Cal Petersen was forced into the game following an injury to Gahagen
Petersen had a shooting gallery at times in his own end
Petersen (who had played since April 18) wasn’t pretty but he kept things tied which is all you could ask for
He stopped all seven shots he faced in the middle frame as the Bears were outshooting the Phantoms 24-17
Petersen remained healthy for the remainder of the tilt as Lehigh Valley have fewer goalie options than most with injuries
He also made an incredible diving stop with just under four minutes to go which energized the already high-octane crowd
HOLY STICK SAVES BATMAN! What a stop by Cal!#RallyTheValley | #LVvsHER | #LVPhantoms pic.twitter.com/5HQnJC0NZC
Petersen did almost a similar acrobatic stop with Hershey playing six-on-four with Shepard pulled and the Phantoms (you guessed it) killing another penalty
Nikita Grebenkin had the crowd at PPL Center abuzz with an absolute cannon of a shot
The one-timer gave the Phantoms an improbable 3-2 lead in the closing minutes of the second
Nikita asked “Can I kick it?” And everyone said “Yes you can!”#RallyTheValley | #LVvsHER | #LVPhantoms pic.twitter.com/iypHpi3sLs
especially late in the second when Aaron Ness was given a 10-minute misconduct seconds after Vincent Iorio clocked a Phantom
Two of the Flyers’ brighter prospects were on the same line to start game three
Both were on the power play and had some good looks
particularly Jett Luchanko who drove to the dirty area but couldn’t drive it home
However by the middle of the second period
Luchanko’s chance was the lone shot on goal between the two players
Alex Bump had a pretty quiet start to the contest and had a clean sheet through 40 minutes (except for being -1 in +/-)
He also took a dumb minor two minutes into the third
Jett Luchanko’s sharp angle shot was stopped by Shepard but Garrett Wilson buried the rebound to tie it 2-2
Cap Scratch Fever#RallyTheValley | #LVvsHER | #LVPhantoms pic.twitter.com/44X0vjIcpN
Luchanko’s biggest chance came early in the third on a breakaway
Sadly he didn’t make hay as Shepard stoned him cold
Anthony Richard had a breakaway with about seven minutes to go in regulation that couldn’t provide Lehigh Valley an important insurance goal
Lycksell provided that fourth goal almost a minute later
using the Bears defender as a screen to beat Shepard with a fantastic wrist shot
A gutsy relief appearance from Cal Petersen and the Phantoms are now a win away from knocking off the defending two-time Calder Trophy champions Hershey Bears

Two Flyers Prospects Face Off in the Frozen Four Finals
What are the Flyers Getting with Nikita Grebenkin
The Lehigh Valley Phantoms evened their series against the Hershey Bears at one win each after the Phantoms’ 3-1 win last night in Hershey
Zayde Wisdom scored twice and Anthony Richard scored en route to Lehigh Valley’s 3-1 win
Lehigh’s Friday night victory will bring the series back to the PPL Center in Allentown

A name that Flyers fans are used to by now, Anthony Richard
opened the scoring in the game late in the second period
The two teams had been in a goaltender duel and defensive battle
Scoring was literally non-existent for the first 38 minutes and 41 seconds of the game
That was until Nikita Grebenkin made a great play from behind the goal line to center the puck for Richard
What a pass from the Birthday boy! #RallyTheValley | #LVvsHER | #LVPhantoms pic.twitter.com/EClLltP4A1
the Phantoms got on the board first in Friday’s contest
The Phantoms took the 1-0 lead into the second intermission
They had just 20 minutes to hold on to the win
Zayde Wisdom allowed Lehigh Valley to breathe just over two minutes into the third period
With Elliot Desnoyers in the box for cross-checking
who netted the short-handed score to extend their lead to two
However, with the Phantoms still down a man, Alex Limoges (PSU Legend) took advantage of the Bears’ power play and drew Hershey back within one
It was a 2-1 game again, and with 15:22 to play in the game, Emil Andrae found himself back in the box for tripping. The beginning of the Andrae penalty made it four-on-four, as Ivan Miroshnichenko found himself in the penalty box a minute earlier
it would not be the Bears scoring their second power-play goal of the game
it was Zayde Wisdom getting his second shorty of the game
Just another shortie for Wiz! #RallyTheValley | #LVvsHER | #LVPhantoms pic.twitter.com/iGsOlVI8Ku
The Phantoms closed out the final 13:26 of the game and held on to the 3-1 win
Read More: REPORT: Flyers Interview NCAA Coach
Parker Gahagen split the 2024/25 season between the Phantoms in the AHL and the Reading Royals of the ECHL
While he was not always the go-to guy for the Phantoms
he certainly is making the most of his postseason time
Gahagen has started all four of the Phantoms’ playoff games
Gahagen faced 20 shots and stopped 19 of them
Gahagen is a big reason for the Phantoms’ success in the Calder Cup Playoffs
giving him a 1.76 goals-against-average and a .936 save-percentage
The 31-year-old netminder has been nothing short of phenomenal thus far
One significant factor in Friday night’s game was a lack of discipline
There were 16 different penalties called between the two teams, including a Garrett Wilson game misconduct early in the second period, a Givani Smith 10-minute misconduct
Nine of the game’s 16 penalties came against the Phantoms
allowing too many chances on the man-advantage can come back to haunt you
It is amazing to me that Hershey only had 20 shots-on-goal despite no shortage of chances with the man-advantage
The Phantoms will want to clean that up ahead of their next game
The Phantoms will bring the series back home on Sunday
when they take on the Bears at the PPL Center in Allentown

Phillies prospect Otto Kemp has been on a tear since Opening Day for the Lehigh Valley IronPigs and on Monday was named International League Player of the Month for April
The right-handed-hitting infielder hit .330 with big power in April and has carried it over into May
Kemp is batting .344/.433/.703 in 150 plate appearances with 14 doubles
Kemp is 25 years old and was signed by the Phillies in August 2022 after going undrafted out of Division II Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego
He's played mostly third base in the Phillies' system along with some work at second
stay in the game with the latest updates on your beloved Philadelphia sports teams
"He's played really well and he can play all over the diamond," manager Rob Thomson said last weekend
Kemp is not on the Phils' 40-man roster but the production has been impossible to overlook and he'd have to be added to the 40 before December's Rule 5 draft anyway to protect him from being selected by another organization
Kemp leads the International League in slugging and OPS but this isn't just a six-week hot streak
He also went 7-for-20 (.350) with four extra-base hits in big-league spring training and hit six homers with a .460 on-base percentage in the highly competitive Arizona Fall League four months earlier
What Weston Wilson has been able to do for the Phillies as a platoon piece and pinch-hitter against lefties (.327
1.033 OPS in 67 plate appearances) could be a template for Kemp if/when a need arises

the Lehigh Valley Phantoms were going up against Goliath in the Atlantic Division semi-finals
The back-to-back defending Calder Cup champion Hershey Bears were waiting
the Phantoms were unable to solve Hunter Shepard in a 3-0 loss
But in the two games that following this weekend
the Phantoms have now moved to the brink of the Atlantic Division finals
the two teams were locked in a scoreless game when Anthony Richard broke the ice with 1:19 remaining in the second period to give the Phantoms the lead
Zayde Wisdom scored a shorthanded goal at 2:05 to make it 2-0
Hershey answered 45 seconds later on the power play
but Wisdom struck again at 6:34 for another shorthanded goal to make it 3-1
That brought the series back to Allentown on Sunday evening
The Phantoms were at it again shorthanded in the first
The Bears scored twice in 1:24 early in the second
and Parker Gahagen exited at the 11:12 mark of the period with an injury after making 15 saves on 17 shots
The Phantoms tied the game at two at 13:09 on a power-play goal by Garrett Wilson
then took the lead at 15:51 on a goal by Nikita Grebenkin
After killing off three penalties with the lead
the Phantoms finally got some insurance with 5:51 remaining in the third
as Olle Lycksell scored off the rush to make it 4-2
Cal Petersen stopped all 15 shots he faced in relief
Emil Andrae and Richard had two assists each
The series continues on Friday night at 7:05 p.m

The 2024 season was a brutal one for Philadelphia Phillies right-handed pitching prospect Mick Abel
whom the Phillies selected with the 15th overall pick in the first round of the 2020 MLB draft
quickly established himself as one of the most well-regarded young arms in the game
Heading into the 2023 season, MLB Pipeline ranked him No. 48 in its top 100, while Baseball America (No
A mediocre age-21 season with Double-A Reading in which he posted a 4.14 ERA in 22 starts caused some to cool their jets a bit
but Philadelphia saw enough to move him up to Triple-A for all of 2024 regardless
as Abel made 24 starts and got tattooed for much of the year
resulting in a 6.56 ERA while he issued an astounding 78 walks in 108.2 innings
even as he struck out more than a batter per inning
The nightmare campaign was enough to end Abel's status as a top 100 prospect league-wide, and he fell from being the No. 2 prospect in the Phillies system before 2024 all the way down to No
There did not seem to be much reason for optimism when Abel first took the ball in this year's spring training
as he allowed three earned runs in an inning and two-thirds
It felt as though perhaps president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski had missed an opportunity to sell high on Abel a couple of years ago to add to the team's core during its window of contention
but Abel has spent the 2025 season storming back
the 23-year-old Oregon native owns a 2.88 ERA and has struck out 36 hitters in 34.1 innings
he has significantly curtailed his walk rate
down to 3.4 per nine innings from 6.5 a year ago
Abel's numbers will only improve following his seventh start on Sunday against the Rochester Red Wings
when he blanked the Washington affiliate for five innings while striking out six
The former top prospect's resurgence is a welcomed sight for Philadelphia
as Abel could now theoretically provide strong starting depth to the team's rotation as the season moves on
his trade value is back to the point where he could be the centerpiece of a deal that lands the Phillies a major contributor at the deadline
Abel has taken major steps toward increasing the likelihood of establishing himself as a reliable rotation arm at the Major League level
