The 2025 NFL Draft featured a ton of talent
One of those players was Colorado Buffaloes safety Shilo Sanders
However, Sanders was signed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as an undrafted free agent and will try to earn a spot on the 53-man roster
Sanders had a solid senior season at Colorado in 2024
playing in 10 games and recording 67 total tackles (44 solo)
two fumble recoveries (one returned for a touchdown)
all eyes will be on how he handles the next step
In a video posted to social media by Sanders, he and Kamara cross paths, and the Saints star has a quick message for him
“You’re in my division now … you gotta play against me!”
Kamara has caused problems for Tampa Bay in the past, scoring 12 touchdowns in 14 career games against them, making plays both on the ground and through the air. Sanders joins a Bucs defense that finished the regular season 16th in the NFL with a 74.5 grade per PFSN’s Defense+ metric
Roberts are also competing for snaps at free safety
standing out in rookie minicamp and training camp will be key
Kamara was spotted in Boulder hanging out with the Sanders family
Kamara continues to produce at a high level for the Saints
Kamara has never recorded a 1,000-yard rushing season as a running back
and yet he’s been named to two All-Pro teams
His value lies in his overall offensive package
he finished with 1,493 yards for scrimmage and eight total touchdowns
Kamara has never registered fewer than 1,100 yards from scrimmage
if Sanders makes the Buccaneers roster and meets Kamara in the open field

“We used Nosferatu (1922) as a compass for composing our shadow shots.”
Why are unique camera angles, experimental lighting choices, and the use of dark shadows so prevalent in horror films? Films in the horror genre revolve around fear
and what’s more terrifying than shadows and not knowing what is lurking within them
Director Joanna Tsanis is well-versed in the horror genre, so she felt comfortable exploring these outside-of-the-box techniques in her latest film, The Killgrin
The film’s synopsis reads: After a personal tragedy
Miranda explores unconventional self-help methods
only to learn from a spiritual healer that she has an infection of her aura called a ‘killgrin’
Miranda turns to the more traditional method of group therapy
but soon unravels a terrifying truth when people close to her suffer a gruesome fate
Tasked with bringing Joanna’s vision to life on The Killgrin was cinematographer Alvin Sun
whose other credits include Space Dragon and Kim
“Shadows were not just a visual element to the film
The Killgrin plays on the idea that it follows a person around
like a shadow.” He also went on to touch on some of their inspirations
“Kairo aka Pulse was another movie we referenced
I don’t think you could do a psychological horror film without being inspired by Japanese horror
It creates this atmosphere of uneasiness that we wanted to inject into the movie as often as possible.”

No Film School: Can you talk about how you became a DP
I fell in love with film when I was young and went to film school looking to be a writer/director
I had some background doing editing in high school and figured that’s what I would do in the industry
Something just clicked between the technical and creative aspects of the role
I wanted to learn everything I could about the profession
I set out to become a good camera assistant
I spent over a decade split between the commercial
I was lucky enough to work with some amazing DPs coming up
working on anything and everything I could and just soaking up all the knowledge I could
I made great friends who support me even now
and that network helped get me DP work over time
I made the decision to be a Cinematographer full-time
BTS 'The Killgrin'Credit: Alvin Sun
NFS: How did you become involved with The Killgrin
connected me to Landed Entertainment as a director of photography
We collaborated on some projects and created a great working relationship
I got an opportunity to interview with Joanna
We went into pre-production like a week after
Pre-production was a lot of meetings over Zoom
I was bouncing around a few small projects and teaching cinematography part-time at that time
I would make any of my free time available for pre-production
Joanna and I would work around each other's schedules and just talk about the script and shot-list at night for hours over Zoom
and vibes of the script and then went into detail about what she wanted to achieve technically with the film
Then we’d location scout anywhere we could fit time in
So we’d go back and look at our wish list of shots and make it meld with reality
'The Killgrin'Credit: Dark Sky Film
NFS: Were there specific films that you took inspiration from for The Killgrin
Sun: Joanna knows a lot about horror movies and came to the table with a lot of inspiration
An important aspect of the film was the use of shadows
Shadows were not just a visual element to the film
1922’s Nosferatu’s use of shadows is classic and iconic
so we used it as a compass for composing our shadow shots
and the Haunting series were very influential
There’s this notion in his work that there’s something just beyond
If we could imply something was in the room without explicitly showing it
that was always the best choice for the film
It creates this atmosphere of uneasiness that we wanted to inject into the movie as often as possible
NFS: Which scene was the most challenging to shoot
We scheduled as much time as possible to cover that scene
We blocked out extra time in the shooting schedule to rehearse the scene
I would film the rehearsals with my phone to make sure our shot list was working in the real world. As a cinematographer
it’s great having all these toys in front of you to choose from
but it’s also a lot of time and effort for the crew as well as money away from other parts of the film
I definitely don’t want to waste everyone’s efforts and performances on shots that end up on the cutting room floor
I think that the most challenging thing is shooting a shot that you know the editor has to use
because nothing captures that moment better
and there’s this elated feeling on set when you capture a moment like that
'The Killgrin'Credit: Dark Sky Films
NFS: What did your collaboration with director Joanna Tsanis look like
Sun: Collaborating with Joanna was just a wonderful time
you need a good line of trust and communication
I can’t compliment Joanna enough during this process
We would go over the script together to see if there was a better
Our guiding star was always our wish list of shots
it had to make sense in the story world and fit the themes and tone of the story she wanted to tell
and in my inbox the next day when we’d do it all over again forthe next scenes.By the time the camera starts rolling things happen beyond your control and you have to pivot or make a snap decision
We never had a problem making those choices because of prep and the trust we had in each other
Joanna was gracious enough to trust me with her vision for the movie
It’s a great feeling when your intuition on a shot makes the director smile
I don’t think we ever walked away from a scene unhappy
'The Killgrin'Credit: Dark SKy Films
NFS: How did you decide on the lighting approach
Example: the dimly lit interiors and the blue
How would you say the lighting is different on this film than in other films you have seen
Sun: It starts with looking at our inspirations for the film
I tend to create a lookbook with a collection of all the referential images and use it as a guide to create something new
Shooting on the Alexa allowed me to push the image in the low light
Our friends at Ontario Camera allowed me to do some camera testing
I ran the camera through a wide variety of exposures and then took the images into Davinci Resolve to see the detail I could pull out of them
One stop underexposed felt right for the film
I try to keep my lighting as simple as possible; it looks the best in my experience
and it’s more efficient for everyone involved
I’ll look at where light can be motivated naturally in every location
I’ll use my light meter to make sure everything is consistent
It’s very comforting looking at the monitor and knowing exactly the details I’m taking into post
because of the testing in prep. It’s hard to say what exactly is different about this particular lighting
I’m just channeling everything I’ve learnt through watching and studying others
But I will say I try my best to blend an old-school approach with new technology
Where would I usually put a tungsten fresnel or HMI
But now it might be LED light that has dimming and color temperature control from my phone
A big advantage of LED fixtures is just how much lighter they are now
A lighting setup that would require a lot of piping or rigging before I can do it from a stand
NFS: You had single locations that doubled for multiple locations in The Killgrin
and what was key to making them look different
Sun: We had a couple of locations that doubled for multiples
but the trickiest was a single house that was the story location for Brian’s apartment
interior and exterior of Aaron and Andie’s house
It definitely gets tricky when you’re framing shots and can’t use a certain lens or look a certain direction because the background would link to another story location
and the entire art team did a great job making each set feel distinct
you want to maximize every single detail you can see on frame
Sebastian and his team always had an option to fill a space or direction the camera was looking
which is absolutely vital when shooting multiple-story locations in one single physical location
'The Killgrin'Cedit: Dark Sky Film
NFS: What camera and equipment did you use for the shoot
Sun: We shot on the Alexa Mini with Cooke S4 lenses
Ontario Camera was so supportive and allowed me to camera test with every lens set they had available
I took the test images into Davinci Resolve to color grade and landed on the Cooke S4’s
They had the texture and light fall off that felt right for the project. We had a tight production schedule with a nimble crew to do it
I was able to have friends I’ve known and worked with for over a decade on my crew
But I wanted to be as efficient and flexible as possible
I prefer my traditional HMI and Fresnels when I can
but any time it was better served to use a dimmable bi-color LED like an ARRI Skypanel or Litemat
I also bought the Smallrig 220B LED to test during the shoot
I wanted something I could control easily on my phone that I could quickly adjust between shots
It ended up being a workhorse on the shoot
and a lot of times I had it overhead on a menace arm with a lantern in my setups
NFS: Can you tell us something we might not know about the cinematography of the film
Sun: We had a tight production schedule; we shot the entire feature over 15 days
Some locations or sets we’d have to shoot in one day because of scheduling and availability
It becomes a puzzle organizing setups and shots while coordinating with art
and special effects to give everyone time to properly do their job
My cinematography can’t shine if everyone else can’t display their best work on the screen as well
I have to help with that delicate dance to make the best image possible
Joanna and I worked hard to make each scene feel distinct from the others in those situations
between how it transitioned in or how the scene was covered
A look at how the Blackmagic Camera app was used by hundreds of fans to help KoЯn create a dynamic and immersive concert documentary
that’s a band name I probably haven’t seen or thought about since the days of watching MTV’s Total Request Live when I got home from middle school in the mid-2000s
Blackmagic Design has shared a cool story about how one of the most popular nu-metal groups from their day
used hundreds of fans to help them create a pretty kick-ass rock concert documentary
Armed with Blackmagic Camera apps on their smartphones
over 200 KoЯn fans served as assistant camera operators on a recent documentary that captured the band’s 30th-anniversary concert in action
Let’s look at some fun behind-the-scenes tidbits about how this was pulled off
As a celebration of the American metal band’s 30th anniversary concert
set up a unique workflow using the Blackmagic Camera app and Blackmagic Cloud to turn hundreds of fans into assistant camera operators
it actually sounds like a pretty simple process thanks to the ease of use with the Blackmagic Camera app
which can be downloaded on both iPhone and Android smartphones and is free to download and use
the real trick was working with all of the footage and data collected by the fans with the goal of editing together a seamless story and experience from the concert
You can find out more about the project—as well as further learn how Blackmagic Design played a pivotal role in its development, capture, and edit—on Blackmagic’s website here
Lucier died in 2021 at the age of 90. But the composer — or rather, a surrogate created out of biological matter taken from his body with his permission before he died — is now putting out new music
At a time when extending a dead musician's output — or at least attempting to — can be as easy as typing prompts into an AI system
a group of artists and scientists in Australia are bringing one deceased composer "back to life" in a different way: by rebuilding some of his brain
Lucier's posthumous composition comes from a new installation at The Art Gallery of Western Australia in Perth called Revivification
that has the ability to take action in the real world," said artist Nathan Thompson
one of the creators of the installation alongside artists Guy Ben-Ary and Matt Gingold
This "brain on a dish" takes the form of two small
The blobs are a cluster of neurons that mimic in a very basic way the structure and development of a human brain
Thompson said it was grown out of stem cells created from blood samples the composer agreed to donate to the project the year before he died
"He was aware of possibilities that the work would perform for him even after his death," Thompson said
the blobs — Alvin Lucier's surrogate self — are connected to 20 handcrafted brass plates attached to the gallery walls
which contain hidden transducers and mallets
respond to neural signals the biological matter gives out in real time
The team behind the project sees the musical output as an extension of the composer's artistic vision from beyond the grave. As a line from a video about the installation puts it
"Revivification proposes a provocative vision of artistic immortality and speculates that Lucier's creative essence persists beyond death."
"Creativity has two components," said Indre Viskontas
a cognitive neuroscientist at the University of San Francisco who studies creativity
"One is the originality or the novelty or the uniqueness of the piece
Viskontas said the blobs lack the other component that would make them capable of the creativity needed to truly make new art: intention
"Creativity really has to have a conscious element to it
And I don't think this particular piece of art is conscious," she said
a professor at the University of Montreal who researches the intersection of neuroscience and artificial intelligence
But it won't turn into a full blown brain," he said
Jerbi added that the process of producing sound from "organoid" biological matter (like the blobs on view in the gallery) is not new. He pointed to the album Creation Myth by Hot Sugar
which he said features "sounds based on microtonal midi files" that one of his former Ph.D
But Jerbi said Revivification is truly creative and novel in a different way
"The creativity that I'm seeing in this project largely comes from the way it was put together by the artists and scientists working together to create this installation," he said
given the experimental nature of Lucier's compositions
he would really appreciate this process," he said

May 2, 2025 6:36 PM EDTIn this story:New Orleans Saints NewsOffseason social media around the NFL always stirs the pot. One of the top players for the New Orleans Saints had a bit of a mysterious post recently
that Kamara is hungry to get back onto the field to prove he is still one of the top running backs in the game
I don't think any recent decision by the Saints would have upset the veteran RB
who revealed he wants to retire as a Saint during last season.
Kamara has always been rather active on social media
whether it is commenting on other sporting events
or just bantering with other players around the team.
He also chimed in on the Saints' head-coaching search before Kellen Moore was hired
But it be funny hearing why yall think a coach should get a job or not
the last time some yall played organized anything was last night on 2k
Can’t een get ya best friend to pass you the ball at the park
Wife mad as hell you yelling on the game all night -- Kamara via Twitter/X
he caught some flak on socials for posting a yawning emoji
that some thought was related to the team's choice to bring Moore in as the new HC
New Orleans will continue to ramp up their offseason endeavors
and Kamara is expected to be an important piece to Kellen Moore's offensive attack next season.
After last season's dominance from Philadelphia Eagles RB Saquon Barkley under Moore
it should be fun to watch Kamara in this scheme.

Alvin Scott Davis went to be with the Lord Jesus on Thursday
He was the second of three children born to Vance Scott Davis and Laurel Pauline Davis
1975 he married Patricia “Trish” Ann Rhea in Philadelphia
always walking with her hand in his for 50 years
visiting the National Parks and being with family and friends
He was a quiet man but his unselfish kindness spoke volumes about his character in all he did
always putting others needs before his own
No matter the situation he would be there to help sharing his love and faith with the works of his beautiful hands and the generosity of his heart
He was a source of strength and dependability to anyone who was blessed to know him
Almost every memory of him is one of him helping
or building something for someone and those memories will remain locked in my heart along with the gratitude for God's gift of him
Al is survived by his wife Patricia “Trish”
his sister and brother-in-law Claudia and Robert Cannell
his brother and sister-in-law Terrance and Charlea Davis
nieces and nephews and friends who he loved
He is preceded in death by his parents Vance S
In 1988 Al was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer
In 2003 he had a stroke that left him unable to sit up
but with the love and prayers of family and friends he recovered and went on to continue with fixing and building
One of the songs he loved through some of those times of recovery was "Press On" by the vocal group Selah
The words of the song perfectly fit his attitude towards any problem
He always gave the glory and honor to God for the strength and healing to get him through
For we are God's workmanship created in Christ Jesus to do good works which God has prepared in advance for us to do.”

A man who was shot during a gunfight Saturday on Interstate 94 near 10 Mile in St
"One of the occupants of the Chevrolet has died at the hospital," Michigan State Police officials said on X Tuesday
"He has been identified as a 19-year-old male from Detroit."
They also urge anyone with information about the shooting to call the state police with tips at (855) MICH-TIP or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP
Police said on Saturday that the shooting happened at about 1 p.m
Detectives said the drivers of a black Chevrolet Malibu and a silver vehicle shot at each other as they traveled on the freeway
the Malibu rear-ended a GMC Acadia while the silver vehicle continued speeding east on I-94
The drivers of the Malibu and the Acadia then pulled over onto the right shoulder
Officials also said one of the Malibu's passengers had a pistol he took up the freeway's embankment and threw before returning to the car
State police said medics took two of the Malibu's occupants to a hospital with injuries
The freeway was closed for hours on Saturday while police investigated
Media reports and organizers of a GoFundMe page said the 19-year-old who died was Alvin "Little Mark" Johnson
"It is with tears in our eyes and pain in our hearts that we are saddened to announce that Alvin's journey was tragically cut short on April 26, 2025," organizers of the online fundraiser wrote on the page
"Despite the immense heartache that our family feels
we are even more overwhelmed by the lack of financial resources available to provide Alvin with a proper burial
"Our family is grateful for all of the support during this very tragic time
and we sincerely appreciate all of the calls
Many have reached out and asked how they can help during this very difficult time
we decided to acknowledge the outpouring of love and allow those near and far who loved Alvin to help ensure that he is properly laid to rest."
The shooting is the latest involving guns on Michigan freeways
In January, a Detroit man was charged with assault with intent to murder
assault with great bodily harm less than murder
and weapons charges after he allegedly shot at a woman's car on I-94 near Mount Elliott the month before
Police said she had two kids in the car with her at the time
In December, a Taylor man's vehicle was shot at while traveling on the Southfield Freeway near Schoolcraft Road
The month before, two people in a vehicle were shot at while traveling on I-94 and Moross on Detroit's east side

Jaysen Alvin Bassett escaped this mortal realm on March 22
He did it on purpose to avoid being told he couldn't go camping or hunting in his condition
He passed away peacefully at home with the love of his life
had plenty to say when the doctors informed him hospice was his best option
he decided it was time to tell it how he saw it
The remainder of this obituary was written by Jaysen himself
the son of Alvin Bassett (God Rest his Soul
I bet he rolled in his grave a million times from all the drama) and Sandra Hansen
I leave behind a saint of a widow and a very dysfunctional family that lives and thrives on drama
for which I was the favorite cousin (just don't ask the family)
and a tribe of misfits that made sure I didn't kill myself before dad came to get me
Kathryn (KC); my children: Cheyenne (Joel) Miller
Grandchildren: Rowen and Fenix Miller and Bennett and Cooper Page
I was preceded in death by my loving father
as I gave it all to those that truly loved and cared about me
Actions speak louder than words and family isn't always blood
If I tried to give you something and you turned it down
In lieu of "I wish I would have known he was this bad," please keep your opinions to yourself
it wasn't a secret I was racing to the other side for over a year
but well-wishers are encouraged to write a note of farewell on a bottle of banana rum and drink it in my honor
A 'Celebration of Life' will be held
Details will be announced according to instructions left with KC.

safety Shilo Sanders wasted no time in preparing for his upcoming rookie minicamp
Sanders posted a video of his training regimen before he joins the Buc
and it featured a surprise cameo from New Orleans Saints star running back Alvin Kamara:
you right," Sanders said after realizing that his friend is now his opponent
"I'm gon' have to do it to you
but you're such a great guy that I don't wanna do it to you."
Kamara ended the playful interaction by congratulating Sanders on making it to the NFL before getting to his own training started
The older brother of quarterback Shedeur Sanders
Shilo watched as the signal-caller surprisingly slid to the fifth round of the 2025 NFL draft before being selected by the Cleveland Browns
While he also hoped to hear his name on draft night

passed away peacefully Saturday morning in the comfort of his home and the company of his family
Anyone who knew Al could tell you that was the only way he was ever going to leave the “farm” west of Hays
Al was the oldest of seven children of Alois and Barbara (Dinkel) Denning
He spent his childhood working on the family dairy farm and graduated from Hays High in 1947
Al then took on a variety of hard-working jobs
from the oil fields to the quarry to driving trucks
before spending over two decades years working at the Hays Post Office.
Al and Aletha raised seven children together
He volunteered with the kids’ 4-H clubs
was a fixture at local farmers markets and small-animal auctions
and enjoyed driving his pickup through the countryside
noting the level of Big Creek (always low)
stopping to gather a sweet wildflower for Aletha
or suggesting that so-and-so better get that alfalfa baled before it rains
Al almost never spent a night away from the farm (“Who would collect the eggs?”) and during daylight hours could usually be found outdoors
and every spring he would plant an acre-sized garden full of every vegetable he could coax to sprout
along with rabbits and the occasional sheep or miniature donkey
He valued trees and strategically planted hundreds of them on his farm to block the wind
And he really loved when folks would see the Fresh Eggs sign on the highway and stop in to visit
“Let me show you something,” he’d say to the kids
before leading them to peek at chicks hatching in the incubator or the biggest squash you’ve ever seen growing in the garden
and Jimmy Dean breakfast sandwiches.
Al’s pride and joy was his large and loving family
Al is reunited in death with his wife of 71 years
and two sisters (Dolores Frank and Edna Gustus Hunt).
Al is survived by six children—Tom Denning (Deb) in Hays
and Roger Denning (Michele) in San Diego—along with his brother
A funeral Mass will be held at 2pm Thursday
The Mass will be preceded by a memorial visitation at the church from 1:00pm to 2pm
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Ellis County 4-H Scholarship and Development
Contributions made payable to the organization may be sent in care of Keithley Funeral Homes and Crematory
Condolences may be sent to the family on Al’s tribute page at www.keithleyfuneralchapels.com
a native of Lockport and resident of Ponchatoula

Scott Micheal Guidry (Christine); three grandchildren
and Isabella Guidry; and one step-granddaughter
and Sherrie Guidry Griffin (Earl); brother in-law
Russel Allemand; and many nieces and nephews
Guidry and Rita Bourgeois Guidry of Lockport; sister
Guidry defined what a hard-working man should be
He was probably best known for the many years he worked as produce manager for National Food Stores in Lockport where everyone seemed to know him
After he would finish his usual day of work
and sometimes 5 yards for many residents across the town of Lockport
Guidry continued this up until the time he and Mary moved to Ponchatoula where he continued to love working in his yard.
Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation at Holy Savior Little Church in Lockport
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11:00AM with burial following in the church cemetery.

The deepest regions of Earth’s oceans, known as the abyssal and hadal zones, lie at least as far under the water’s surface as Mount Rainier’s peak rises above the land surface. These great depths of 4,000 or more meters make up one of Earth’s least explored frontiers and are home to some of its most extreme environments and habitats
Remotely operated and autonomous vehicles offer valuable access to these regions
but there is no substitute for direct human observation
and otherwise unknown landscapes—reinforce their allure
but there is no substitute for direct human observation: The situational awareness and targeted
delicate sampling that human-occupied vehicles (HOVs) enable are unique capabilities
Yet the small number of vehicles capable of reaching abyssal and hadal depths—and the even smaller subset that can safely carry humans—limits the ability to explore them
allowing it to reach depths of up to 6,500 meters—surpassing its previous limit of 4,500 meters
The upgrade and a capstone science verification expedition (SVE) represent more than a decade of planning
and technological development that have opened new possibilities for deep-sea research
researchers now have access to roughly 99% of the ocean floor (Figure 1)
enabling in-person observations and data collection in regions that were previously unreachable by the submersible
Direct exploration is crucial for understanding deep-ocean environments
Pilots and observers inside an HOV can see the area around them
and feel the movement of the thrusters and robotic arms when they collect samples
These sensory inputs help them understand spatial relationships among features as well as water currents and the condition of specimens as they are being collected
Get the most fascinating science news stories of the week in your inbox every Friday
because a human-occupied submersible is not connected to a surface ship by a cable
it is a versatile and nimble exploration tool
An HOV can change direction more quickly than a remotely operated vehicle
more complex areas without encountering the constraints of a tether and a surface vessel
to provide baseline information that allows us to evaluate whether—and
how—human-induced global changes are affecting deep ecosystems at different depths
Such effects are already pronounced in most ocean environments closer to the surface
Alvin has long been at the forefront of deep-sea exploration
It can conduct a variety of logistical and scientific tasks
conducting mapping and photographic surveys
and collecting samples using its robotic arms
Throughout its lifetime, Alvin has undergone numerous upgrades to remain a state-of-the-art research platform. The most recent upgrade included outfitting it with a new
larger personnel sphere with better ergonomics and improved visibility
as well as improved thrusters and a more advanced command-and-control system
New high-definition imaging systems and faster data acquisition capabilities were also installed
as were enhanced inertial navigation capabilities enabling very accurate tracking from the surface to seafloor
and a new science interface that enables rapid integration of routine and novel sensors for in-sub viewing
a diverse team of scientists—led in part by researchers from WHOI and the University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography (URI-GSO)—put Alvin and its upgraded systems to the test in real-world conditions during its first SVE following the upgrade [Soule et al.
Team members represented a wide range of disciplines
and the expedition included a major milestone in U.S
deep-sea science: Alvin’s first dives below 6,000 meters
All told, the expedition involved six successful dives in the Puerto Rico Trench to nearly 6,400-meter depth and nine along the Mid-Cayman Rise to nearly 6,100-meter depth (Figure 2)
chosen for their extreme depths and diverse conditions
provided rigorous proving grounds for Alvin’s new systems and offered opportunities to study underexplored regions
scientists explored various geological features
The crew also deployed complementary tools
as well as an autonomous sampling lander [Muir et al.
2021] that enhanced Alvin’s observational and sampling capabilities down to 8,000-meter depth
The 2022 Science Verification Expedition (SVE) yielded observations that contribute to our understanding of Earth’s geological history and processes that shape the ocean floor
The 2022 expedition yielded several significant scientific observations that have contributed to our understanding of Earth’s geological history and processes that shape the ocean floor. On the Mid-Cayman Rise, researchers aboard Alvin discovered the world’s deepest-known very young (<1–2 decades) submarine volcanic eruption site at 6,000 meters deep [Rubin et al.
an important finding for understanding the effect of high ambient pressure and low temperature on eruption mechanisms
These researchers also characterized high-grade metamorphic rocks in multiple locations and collected samples at the Von Damm and Beebe active hydrothermal vents [German et al.
which have distinct faunal communities (Figure 3)
the science team recovered the first samples of the active microbial communities living within the vent chimneys
offering insights into life in these extreme environments
a remarkable adaptation in the deep ocean to a modern ecological change in the surface waters
The scientists and Alvin operations team of pilots and engineers on the SVE
confirmed the upgraded Alvin’s readiness for abyssal and hadal explorations
proved essential for the success of the mission
Alvin has returned to its regular operational cadence
These dives have included expeditions back to long-term study sites on the East Pacific Rise—where researchers
aided by the autonomous underwater vehicle Sentry
discovered a new off-axis hydrothermal vent site (D
where scientists found dramatically changed hydrothermal venting at a previously known site (M
A subsequent series of deep science dives in 2024 reached nearly 5,000 meters in the Aleutian Trench
where polychaete-populated seeps were observed to provide habitat for a host of organisms such as hydroids
including possibly new species discoveries (L
The deep ocean is a place where high hydrostatic pressure influences biological adaptation
and chemical phenomena such as mineral and ore formation
Alvin—the most active research submersible in the world and the only U.S
HOV capable of reaching such extreme depths—has contributed to numerous scientific discoveries related to these processes
as well as to explorations of shipwrecks and unknown deep-sea environs
Alvin has also supported U.S. leadership in deep-ocean exploration and motivated the work of more than 14,000 personnel
it has been a major part of each of our own dive histories
contributing indelibly to our research and careers
The continuing focus on inclusivity in future expeditions will help to foster a welcoming environment for the next generation of researchers using Alvin
The SVE didn’t involve just established scientists
and inclusion within the scientific community
it also included 11 early-career scientists
most of whom were diving in Alvin for the first time
These scientists offered their expertise in geology
and they hailed from oceanographic institutions
as well as from the Cayman Islands government
The continuing focus on inclusivity in future expeditions will help to foster a welcoming environment for the next generation of researchers using Alvin to expand our understanding of deep-sea biological
Alvin’s upgraded capabilities will offer these scientists opportunities to study such processes in greater detail
contributing to knowledge of how life and Earth itself have evolved under extreme conditions
They will also help to provide vital understanding and insights into how human activities are increasingly affecting environments
supporting comprehensive assessments of global change and how we might manage these regions
As we continue to push the boundaries of human exploration ever deeper in the ocean
Alvin remains a critical tool and a symbol of enduring curiosity and commitment to understanding the world beneath the waves
Alvin is a U.S. Navy–owned asset certified under the Navy’s SUBSAFE protocol with support from the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA)
The recent Alvin upgrade was supported primarily by the National Science Foundation with additional support from the Office of Naval Research
is the associate dean of research at URI-GSO and has completed more than 30 HOV dives
is an associate scientist at WHOI and the current chief scientist of deep submergence at NDSF
director of the Ocean Exploration Cooperative Institute
