MediaMalika Andrews joins ESPN’s WNBA coverage; studio show expands to L.A.By Mollie Cahillane05.02.2025 Malika Andrews
host of ESPN’s “NBA Today” and “NBA Countdown,” is adding WNBA studio coverage to her purview
joining Monica McNutt and Carolyn Peck in L.A
-- marking an expansion of WNBA studio shows into L.A
It will be the first time “WNBA Countdown” airs from L.A
and have been since I was a little girl,” said Andrews
“Getting to expand into WNBA coverage at a really exciting time for the league is something I’m really looking forward to
There’s always been incredible talent in the W
but now that talent is also being met with appropriate commitments from ESPN.”
Andrews makes her debut this Sunday on ESPN at 4pm ET for the Indiana Fever vs
Brazilian National Team preseason game at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City
Increased coverage of WNBA news will also be featured on “NBA Today” and “NBA Countdown” through Andrews
and coming off of record setting ratings of last year and interest
it’s just a great story as the league just gets better and better,” said Tim Corrigan
The thought of marrying ‘NBA Today’… We can make a greater emphasis and look at it more as a pivot
but as it’s grown in importance in the sports landscape
of course we’re going to take advantage.”
It’s just the tip of the iceberg for ESPN’s WNBA coverage plans
Elle Duncan returns for the second year to host the ABC edition of “WNBA Countdown” with Carter and Chiney Ogwumike from ESPN’s headquarters in Bristol
Duncan did not know she would be covering the WNBA last year until right before the season started
and is looking forward to Year 2 with more time to prepare
“I’m so pumped for so many things,” Duncan said
“I’ve been in the college space for four years
but the Big Three [the nickname given to Duncan
Carter and Ogwumike] went pretty well last year
so they brought it to me that they wanted to do WNBA coverage
I’m a firm believer that when you first enter a space
the most important thing you can do is learn and listen
Duncan is excited that the space is expanding with “incredible talent.”
and I think she’s going to bring the same thing that she brings to the NBA space
“She’s going to ground the show in an incredible way
in the same way that the space was so welcoming and warm to me
this is an incredibly exclusive space where everybody wants to win
it’s like nothing I’ve experienced in television
I know she’s going to bring the same level of care and journalistic integrity with her stories that she does in the NBA.”
Rebecca Lobo and Holly Rowe reunite for their 13th season as ESPN’s lead WNBA broadcast team
calling marquee matchups throughout the season and the WNBA finals
“The way that we as a network have continued to invest in this property
one thing we’ve continually done is look at
seeing how we can get better,” said Ruocco
“Our programming department has done an unbelievable job of finding us incredible matchups
and then also finding us more windows for shoulder programming around the games and continuing to grow the conversation.”
LaChina Robinson and Angel Gray are also back for this season
ESPN’s coverage begins May 17 with a doubleheader on ABC -- reigning champion Liberty vs
Carter and Ogwumike edition of “WNBA Countdown” will be at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center
alongside Gray and Robinson calling the game
Added Andrews: “I think that Ryan Ruocco’s ‘YOU BET’ is one of the best calls
and being a fan of that and watching the chemistry that Elle
Andraya and Chiney have formed over these last couple of years
and seeing the way WNBA fans have responded to that genuine excitement and commitment
to me it was a no brainer to join that party.”
Andrews makes her WNBA studio debut this at 4pm ET Sunday for the Indiana Fever vs

The North Carolina liberal arts institution’s president said that “financial sustainability is no longer attainable.”
Andrews offered little detail about what went wrong at the university beyond Malik’s note about financial sustainability
The small liberal arts institution’s enrollment has fluctuated in recent years
fall enrollment fell 11.2% to 809 students
The university in fiscal 2023 had a net loss of $6.9 million on top of a $1 million loss the year before, according to tax records
Its net assets had also turned to negative $1.7 million in fiscal 2023
Andrews was created out of a combination of women’s college and Presbyterian men’s college
was built to be “accessible to all,” which St
Andrews says put it in “the forefront of service and research in the education of physically disabled students.”
it began aggressively courting military students and still touts its support of active-duty students
Following financial and accreditation struggles
the institution won approval to merge with Webber in 2011
Webber at the time was larger by about 300 students
Webber leaders cited a desire to combine the university's business program with St
Andrews offered its first graduate program
it faced a total operating deficit of $8.2 million
more than double its $2.7 million deficit the year before
prompted auditors to add a “going concern” warning to the university’s latest financials
indicating Webber might not be able to continue operating over the next year
Malik said the university will focus on helping forge teach-out agreements for students and help them to transfer
as well as assist employees with looking for new jobs
Andrews would preserve its historical record
and work with community leaders around the disposition of its property
The university also has a campus in Pinehurst
but the institution didn’t specify whether it would remain open or close along with the Laurinburg flagship

During a promotional tour for Dexcom U -- a NIL program exclusively for college athletes with diabetes -- Andrews addressed the trade speculation surrounding him heading into Thursday's NFL draft as well as the critical dropped 2-point conversion in a 27-25 AFC divisional playoff loss to the Buffalo Bills
Andrews' future has become a hot topic in Baltimore after Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta was noncommittal when asked if the three-time Pro Bowl player would remain with the team
But Andrews indicated that he hasn't had conversations with the Ravens about a potential move
I think [DeCosta] said it perfectly: He's in the business of keeping great players and it's a business at the end of the day," Andrews told ESPN
DeCosta said the Ravens value Andrews but added
"There's always a lot of unpredictability with the draft."
"I never know what's going to happen," DeCosta added
"And I would never want to say this or that
But I can tell you this: Mark Andrews is a warrior
He's coming off a season in which he set the Ravens' all-time touchdown record but averaged only 39.6 yards receiving
Baltimore would gain $11 million in cap space by parting ways with Andrews
"I know the Ravens and my relationship is incredibly strong and I trust in [DeCosta] and everybody there over at the Ravens," Andrews said
"And there's nothing on my end really to share
it's just been working hard this offseason and trying to get in the best shape of my life
trying to have the best season of my life coming up and winning a Super Bowl."
Andrews' latest pursuit of a Super Bowl ended in January, when he dropped a 2-point conversion that would have tied the score in the playoff game against Buffalo with 1:33 left. On the previous play -- a 24-yard touchdown catch by tight end Isaiah Likely -- Andrews collided with Likely and fell face first into the snowy turf
When Andrews went to the huddle for the 2-point conversion
Do I not?' It was so fast and so quick that it just happened," Andrews said
It was an uncharacteristic mistake for Andrews
who entered that postseason game having not dropped a pass in 12 weeks
wasn't the best game and I'm looking forward to redemption."
After that drop, Andrews drew heated criticism and threats on social media. In an effort to support Andrews, Bills fans started a charitable drive that has led to $146,000 in donations to Breakthrough T1D
an organization that works toward curing and improving the lives of those who are dealing with Type 1 diabetes
Andrews is looking to further assist the cause with his continued partnership with Dexcom
Dexcom is searching for college athletes with diabetes who are passionate about sharing their stories
online submissions can be made to nominate candidates
"This narrative or stigma of people with Type 1 diabetes
I think people are more open," Andrews said
"I think you see a ton of college athletes
all throughout their sports that are doing the best of best things and really showing people that they can do anything they want in life."

including 273 full and part-time faculty and staff

She said students and parents have been asking all week what happens to their financial aid and scholarship funding now that the university is closing

“We either got 75 to 85 percent of our paycheck
I don’t even know if we’re going to get paid for this week

They’re supposed to be looking for funding for that.”

From her viral floor routine to her unwavering candidness on all things mental health
Katelyn Ohashi is the gold standard in more ways than one
Here are a few highlights from her on-mat career before we dig into her conversation on Inside the Lines with A.J
✨ Ohashi was a 10-time All-American at UCLA
won the 2018 national team title with the Bruins
and was the 2018 national co-champion on floor
1️⃣0️⃣ Ohashi scored a remarkable 11 perfect 10s across her college career, with nine on floor and two on beam. Sorry, Hannah
she was a four-time member of the USA Gymnastics Junior National Team
🗣️ In 2019, Ohashi called out cyberbullying and attacks on women in sports through a poetic ESPYs “Best Play” acceptance speech
🥇 Last year, Ohashi participated in Simone Biles’ “Gold Over America Tour,” a live performance that’s helping showcase the brilliance of gymnastics across the country
Today’s topic is “Reclaiming Your Joy” through the grind — a challenge athletes face through the highs and lows of their careers and an issue that’s impacting more and more people each year. Depression rates are on the rise
and those numbers are increasingly impacting women
making this conversation extra near and dear to our hearts
Andrews: What moment do you feel like you reclaimed [your joy] when you went to UCLA
Ohashi: I think it was probably my sophomore year…It’s not like you just turn the page and everything just happens all of a sudden
But I remember that was the first time when I was like
That was the start of my reclaiming my career…I got interested in things outside of gymnastics…I was no longer a gymnast
Andrews: It is truly an experience that so many women have to go through of having to appeal to this desired look of perfection that is just quite literally unattainable
Ohashi: Healing is not linear and [has] its ups and downs… It's not like every day you're going to wake up and feel like you're that girl or feel confident in your skin…
I think people even sharing their journeys was really helpful for me
And that's why I wanted to keep sharing my stories and continue healing in that way
Ohashi: We're not always going to be happy
we're not always gonna be excited about life
But I think joy is accepting all those things in between
It's not just about where you finished
but it's about all the bumps along the way and accepting them wholeheartedly
here are a few takeaways from her Inside the Lines convo to find joy in your day-to-day life:
✏️ Write it out. Ohashi spoke about the power of journaling and poetry as she worked to reclaim her joy, even publishing a book, Every Time, I Always Would
“Our mind knows what we want to write before we do” — sometimes putting pen to paper is just what we need
Ohashi was quick to shout out the people in her corner — like her teammates and her UCLA coach
the legendary Valorie “Miss Val” Kondos Field
Whether it’s an IRL hang or a quick phone call
speaking with the ones who know us best can make all the difference
🏀 Shoot your shot. Ohashi recounts being struck with imposter syndrome while participating in the NBA All-Star game
She cautions against letting fear dictate your life — so send that email or drive to the basket
because you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take…literally

2025Wikimedia Commons/RantemarioTwo Christian colleges in the Carolinas have announced their intentions to close after the current academic year in light of financial concerns
St. Andrews University, based in Laurinburg, North Carolina, has announced that it is closing and ceasing operations on May 5
A branch location of the Florida-based Webber International University
Andrews is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and is separate and distinct from the University of St
has also made public its decision to close at the conclusion of the spring semester
In a statement on its Facebook page on Friday
Andrews said the decision resulted from "extensive financial analysis
strategic review and exhaustive recovery efforts."
"We explored every viable path forward," said Webber International University President and CEO Nelson Marquez
"But the persistent financial and enrollment challenges facing St
Andrews could no longer be mitigated through internal solutions alone
This was a deeply painful but necessary decision."
St. Andrews first held classes at St
The new school was a merger between two schools based elsewhere in the state
Flora Macdonald College and Presbyterian Junior College
Andrews University as the institution merged with Webber International University
Andrews indicated that it was "engaged with a number of universities about transfer credits" and expressed gratitude that it had received "an overwhelming amount of support in recent days." The institution listed more than two dozen other colleges and universities it is looking to establish "teach-out" agreements with that would enable students to transfer their credits to the new school and continue their education
Schools in talks to enter into a "teach-out" agreement with St
Andrews include several North Carolina-based institutions such as Appalachian State University
Johnson and Wales University Charlotte and the University of North Carolina at Pembroke
Colleges in discussions about a "teach-out" agreement with St
Andrews extend across multiple states to Alfred University in New York
Tennessee Wesleyan University and Webber International University in Florida
In addition to pursuing "teach-out" agreements
the college will provide "advising and transfer assistance" to all currently enrolled students as well as "personalized transition guidance
including employment resources and benefit counseling" for members of the school's faculty and staff
According to data compiled by the National Center for Education Statistics
The student body consisted of 806 undergraduate students and 26 graduate students
Limestone University made public its decision to close at the conclusion of the spring semester
In a statement posted on the school's website
Limestone's Board of Trustees Chair Randall Richardson explained that "Despite exhaustive efforts to secure the funding necessary to continue our operations
we have come to the difficult conclusion that Limestone University has not been able to secure the necessary funding to sustain its operation."
"We want to thank the almost 200 recent supporters in the last two weeks who committed a collective $2.143 million
We had hoped that would be enough to sustain our institution
we could not continue operations on-campus or online without a greater amount of funding," he added
Data from the National Center for Education Statistics shows that Limestone had an enrollment of 1,782 students as of fall 2023
"Words cannot fully express the sorrow we feel in having to share this news," Limestone President Nathan Copeland stated
and supporters fought tirelessly to save this historic institution."
Like St. Andrews, Limestone is taking steps to assist students as they transfer to other colleges and universities in addition to supporting faculty and staff. The school's Facebook page describes the institution as an "accredited
St. Andrews and Limestone are the latest of several Christian colleges to shut their doors in recent years
Last year, the Roman Catholic Church-affiliated Notre Dame College in Euclid
not to be confused with the prominent University of Notre Dame in neighboring Indiana
announced that it was shutting its doors after more than 100 years in operation
Birmingham-Southern College
an Alabama-based institution with ties to the United Methodist Church
announced it was taking the same course of action weeks later

(WPDE) — Two former students at Saint Andrews University in Laurinburg filed separate lawsuits in February surrounding a convicted
registered sex offender on campus and a member of the school's wrestling team
It also names Webber International University
The former students are listed by the names Jane Smith and Jane Roe in the lawsuits to protect their identities
negligent infliction of emotional distress
intentional infliction of emotional distress and breach of contract
Andrews recruited Mison Mickle to be a part of the school's wrestling team
as he was a successful wrestler in South Carolina
RELATED: St. Andrews University in Laurinburg closing, leaving hundreds of students in limbo
Andrews and its wrestling coach at the time:
or should have known when it made that statement in its 2022 report that following the link to the North Carolina sex offender registry would not alert its students to the presence of Mickle
The college is accused of transporting Mickle across state lines to other college and university campuses to participate in NAIA-sanctioned sporting events while he was a student at the university without any notification to the sponsoring bodies
or to the other colleges and universities that Mickle was a sex offender
It says he raped Jane Roe and Jane Smith in the Fall of 2022
the suit alleges that during her first semester on campus in the Fall semester
Laurinburg police went on to charge Mickle in the incidents
Court records show he pled guilty last March to two counts of second degree forcible rape and failure to register as a sex offender
He's serving a 12-year prison sentence in North Carolina
Andrews University filed responses to the lawsuit denying most of the allegations
including having prior knowledge that Mickle was a registered sex offender
ABC 15 reached out to the university's president
but at this time he hasn't responded to our emails or returned our calls
Court records show the university's lawyer filed a motion last week to no longer represent the college
The countdown to the 2025 WSOP is on. 100 bracelets
And PokerOrg will be on the floor from start to finish
Cherish Andrews took down the biggest score of her career this past April at the WPT Seminole Hard Rock Poker Showdown $25K event for $408,000
bringing her career cashes close to $4,000,000
PokerOrg caught up with Andrews to find out her favorite WSOP events
and the one thing she hopes the WSOP will stay cool about for the whole series
What are you most looking forward to this summer at the WSOP?
The number one thing I'm looking forward to is just playing
This summer will definitely be my biggest full-time at the series.
I'm playing almost every no-limit event up to the $25K's for the first time
I'm excited to play those because those are the best $25K's you can find
Do you have a favorite event in the series
I think it's actually a new event this year – the $25K half PLO and half NLH.
I started playing PLO in a home game in 2020 during COVID
I don't play a ton of it because it's not offered as much as no limit hold'em
but during the WSOP I try to play at every PLO event.
Do you have a mentor in PLO with whom you work
I watched a few Run it Once videos and some other YouTube videos
Adam Hendricks is another good PLO player who I kind of have at my disposal for PLO questions
Your game has evolved significantly over the past few years and has had much success
What are some of the keys that helped you move up in stakes
The number one thing I learned was while playing with a European player one summer in Vegas
‘It’s known that you should never bluff Cherish because she never folds.'
I have a reputation for being a station and never folding
I decided to rethink my game before I went fully pro in 2021.
I've always had a natural talent and aggression and want to win every pot
What does my range look like to my opponent(s)
I learned to take my time during hands now and make the best decision based off of that
That’s what has catapulted me to where my game is today
What’s the biggest mistake the lower and mid-stakes tournament players make
Many regs in the mid-stakes are not taking their time to think thoroughly and deeply about what happened pre-flop and post-flop
What’s the main thing the industry needs to attract more women into the game
That is always a difficult question to answer because women
I think the number one thing a woman needs to see is another woman
it was playing with and watching Kristen Foxen the year she won the Ladies' Championship
What three players would you pick to be on your WSOP Fantasy Draft team this year
I have to pick people who are kind of on a heater this year
it will be Krissy Foxen; I gotta have my girl with me
What would be a positive change or two that you would suggest to the powers that be at the WSOP for this summer
To make sure the air conditioning is working would be one thing
If we can get one year where the AC keeps us cool the entire time
Last year was the first year they implemented a rule that you must be in line by a certain time for late registration to get seated
when you have to travel from Paris to the Horseshoe
They need to be lenient and give you a five-minute window
they were shutting people out left and right.
There has to be some leniency for the bigger buy-ins and give people at least five minutes to get from one venue to the other.
Do you think Phil Hellmuth will play the Main Event this year after announcing he wouldn’t a few months ago
I think part of him saying he's not going to play was him getting more attention
I still think he's going to suck it up and play

The rector of St Andrews University in the UK has won her appeal after the institution removed her from its governing body for issuing a statement that condemned Israel's "genocidal attacks" on Gaza
Last year, the University of St Andrews removed Stella Maris from her position on the university court after its investigation concluded that she exercised "poor judgment" for sending an email to all students in November 2023 that called for an urgent ceasefire in Gaza
Maris, who is an alumnus of the prestigious Scottish university, also called on students to condemn "practices such as apartheid, siege, illegal occupation and collective punishment observed in the treatment of Palestinians"
St Andrews launched an independent inquiry led by Morag Ross KC to "examine" whether Maris's actions and activities were compatible with her role as rector after the UK Lawyers for Israel group lodged a complaint against her
Ross submitted the findings from her internal inquiry to the university court
She found that Maris's email had caused "anxiety and fear" among Jewish students
Despite Ross concluding that firing Maris would be "disproportionate," the university court concluded that she should be removed from her position
ruled in Maris's favour and overturned her dismissal from the university court
Maris described her victory as a "surprise" as well as "vindication of my position [...] and a defence of the fundamental principles of free expression and democractic accountability within our universities
“Universities must remain places where individuals are free to speak out against injustice
especially where that speech is grounded in humanitarian concern and moral conscience in line with the principles of international human rights," Maris said in a statement
'[Maris'] victory [is] a clear rebuke to the growing pattern of repression facing those who speak out for Palestinian freedom'
and members of the public who stood in solidarity with me over the past months
I intend to continue campaigning to ensure the right to political expression and academic freedom.”
the students elect the rector to represent and advocate for their interests
The position is unpaid and carried out voluntarily
Maris received support from students on campus and over 500 academics across 17 countries
Her supporters included the Palestine Solidarity Campaign and the European Legal Support Centre (ELSC)
which provided her with legal support and helped fundraise for her appeal against the decision to fire her
Tasnima Uddin from the ELSC described Maris' "victory as a clear rebuke to the growing pattern of repression facing those who speak out for Palestinian freedom"
yet St Andrews chose to punish its rector for calling for a ceasefire," Uddin told Middle East Eye
"The reinstatement of Stella Maris proves that the attempt to quash this mass movement will not succeed and legal means will continue to be used."
A St Andrews University spokesperson said: “As the body that made the decision to dismiss the rector
University Court is carefully considering the chancellor’s decision and taking advice from counsel
“This issue was never about free speech and only ever about governance
Ms Maris remains rector of the university and has done so throughout.”

(Rick Egan | The Salt Lake Tribune) LJ Andrews with her book "Broken Souls and Bones" on Monday
Northern Utah author LJ Andrews has never seen her books on the shelves of a Barnes and Noble — even though she has a dozen published over the last decade
Her works capture all types of fantasy creatures: from fae to vikings to pirates
The magic system in Andrews’ new release stems from the Norse myths of berserkers
fierce warriors known for their intense battle style
It branches out into bone melding and soul absorption making for her “most immersive” magic system yet
“That’s what this book is about … accepting that we all have a little bit of darkness inside of us
but how you use it is what distinguishes you from the real villains,” Andrews said
The Salt Lake Tribune sat down with Andrews for a Q&A about her new book. Andrews will have a free event hosted by The King’s English Bookshop on May 3 to discuss her new book at First Baptist Church. Visitors must register for tickets beforehand
This interview has been edited for length and clarity
I started writing seriously about 12 years ago
I was just looking for a way to kind of escape postpartum depression
It took about three years and I wrote a mishmash book that didn’t really have [a] genre … I did a lot of research on the way I wanted to publish
[Eventually] I rewrote an old series into what is my “Broken Kingdoms” series now
There is a big difference that you don’t really need to wait anymore
because social media is so powerful in that aspect
I found my agent after “The Broken Kingdoms” kind of gained some steam
and with the help of social media and Facebook ads and BookTok … I got audio book offers
as opposed to just the traditional way where you query an agent and try and you go through the trenches … I had agents coming to me being like
I’ll represent you,’ and then I got to pick who represented me
Lyra is a Viking servant who has been hiding the melding power from the beginning
because everyone’s told her it’s basically very dangerous
Every King kind of wants her for themself and to use her power
Roark was my hardest and my most challenging male main character I’ve ever written
so he’s a non-speaking male main character
That was fun and interesting to talk to medical professionals
I have a brother-in-law who’s an audiologist
I’ve come to really trust my gut after I’ve developed characters
because they do start to speak to you a little bit once you have this person created
I wrote so much in the mountains here … I live up north
so that area by the ski resorts and stuff — they are where people are walking in the mountains in my head
It kind of plays like a movie in my head as I do it … I go for a lot of walks and kind of get in the vibe
(Andrews has made a Spotify playlist for “Broken Souls and Bones. “Drums of Drakkar” by Amoebacrew inspired a specific scene in the book.)
I had created the whole scene of when Lyra actually goes into this stone gate royal fortress. I imagine these gates opening, it’s super intimidating, and they’re beating their drums. It was just from that sound that created that entire scene.
The smell [of a world is] actually where I start. I close my eyes and meditate a little bit.
I hope people come away after feeling like they’ve been on an adventure, first of all, but also like to embrace who you are.

As Coalition projected to have less than 10 women in 150-seat House of Representatives
Linda Reynolds condemns ‘comprehensive failure’ of campaign
Senior Coalition figures are warning the federal opposition faces an existential crisis and must urgently attract more women
calling for Peter Dutton’s replacement to overhaul policy development and candidate recruitment processes
The calls came as Andrew Hastie ruled himself out of the race for opposition leader
despite having being urged by colleagues to stand
A spokeswoman for Hastie told Guardian Australia on Monday afternoon that the shadow defence minister would not be a candidate for the Liberal party leadership.
The shadow treasurer, Angus Taylor, the deputy Liberal leader, Sussan Ley, and the shadow immigration spokesperson, Dan Tehan, are all consulting on possible tilts at the Liberal party leadership, testing support with MPs who survived Saturday’s electoral rout.
The former home affairs minister Karen Andrews on Monday warned the opposition had reached a new low under Dutton’s leadership, saying the election loss had sent “shock waves” through the Coalition.
Read more“The Coalition is facing an existential crisis
The first warning bell sounded in 2022 but the thinking of many in leadership positions didn’t change; if anything
they locked into the old ways,” Andrews said
“Recriminations are disappointing to hear at this time
If those with the ability to influence the direction of the party had stood up and voiced their opinion when they had the chance
perhaps the situation would not be so dire now
“It’s not too late to rebuild but action should start today.”

On current numbers, the Coalition will have fewer than 10 women in the 150-seat House of Representatives.
Helen Coonan, a former Howard government minister, told Guardian Australia the party needed to do more to build a pipeline of quality candidates, including women. But she stressed that quality policy offerings to improve the lives of Australians were essential to win over voters.
“If you ignore the contribution women make, and what their expectations are, for organisations, that’s not going to augur well.
“I think women have looked at the Coalition and not liked what they’ve seen in some policy positions, so have looked for something else.
“Politics, or at least what parties offer, should be about how to enrich people’s lives, how to enable people, and not just be a laundry list of things that might not have much relevance to them.”
2:25Australian federal election 2025 recap: Albanese wins, Dutton concedes, Greens in the air – videoCoonan said female MPs in the parliamentary Liberal party deserved credit for their advocacy.
“To attract women to run as candidates, whether you’ve got quotas or no quotas, if they haven’t got a good story to sell, if they don’t feel that they are part of a compelling narrative that appeals beyond being in a party, that’s not really going to help attract good women,” Coonan said.
“They will ask, ‘where is this going, where is my place?’”
Outgoing Liberal senator Linda Reynolds on Monday called for Ley to lead the party, calling the election campaign “a comprehensive failure”.
“You can see, through successive reviews in federal and state, in terms of where we have taken the wrong turn, but we haven’t comprehensively understood those lessons and we certainly haven’t implemented the reforms that are needed.”
Reynolds, a former defence minister, said the party’s male dominance was holding it back.
“Ten years ago I was part of a review into gender … and we recommended targets and how to get there without quotas. That’s been the Liberal party policy for 10 years but it’s just sat on a shelf,” she told ABC radio.
“We do have to have the hard conversations now about how we become more gender-balanced but also a broader diversity.”
One former Liberal MP said damage from the plan caused a fundamental shift in the campaign’s early weeks
stopping some prospective voters considering Dutton at all
It didn’t sound good from the moment it was mentioned

PHILADELPHIA -- The Nationals made their first in-season acquisition to boost their bullpen
Then the relievers delivered a gritty scoreless effort against the Phillies
Washington signed left-hander Andrew Chafin to a one-year contract on Thursday. He is expected to join the team in Cincinnati on Friday. In a corresponding move, southpaw Colin Poche was designated for assignment
The move was made prior to the Nationals’ 4-2 win over the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park that was secured by four scoreless innings from Jose A
he can help us,” said bench coach Miguel Cairo
who assumed the managerial duties as Dave Martinez attended the funeral of his longtime agent
Chafin, 34, is entering his 12th season in the Major Leagues. He signed a Minor League deal with Detroit and began this season with the Tigers’ Triple-A affiliate
He went 2-0 with one save and a 2.13 ERA in 13 games (12 2/3 innings) for Toledo
Chafin pitched 56 1/3 frames between the Rangers and Tigers

and he’s going to go out there and he’s going to take the ball every chance he gets
so it’ll be good for other bullpen guys to see what it takes to stick around as long as he has and be a pretty dominant back-end guy.”
Poche, 31, joined the Nationals on a Minor League deal after being non-tendered by the Rays in November
the Nationals’ bullpen owned an MLB-worst 7.41 ERA
Finnegan and Jackson Rutledge were the only relievers with an ERA under 5.00
But the trio of relievers halted a Phillies comeback attempt and delivered rookie right-hander Brad Lord his first career win

It was nice to see a ‘W’ going into Cincinnati.”
Washington’s bullpen has felt the effects of injuries this season
Right-hander Derek Law, who pitched a staggering 90 innings last season, has been sidelined since Spring Training because of right forearm inflammation. Righty Orlando Ribalta (No. 29 prospect) was placed on the 15-day IL on April 13 (retroactive to April 10) with a right biceps strain
The Nationals converted Lord (No. 22 prospect) from a Minor League starter to a Major League reliever this spring. When starting right-hander Michael Soroka landed on the 15-day IL on April 4 because of a right biceps strain
Lord was moved out of the ‘pen and into the starting rotation
“I don’t think there’s anybody in this clubhouse that was worried [about the bullpen],” Lowe said

She was always happy to tell you how fabulous any of her 7 grandkids were-whether you asked her to or not
Never shy and always proud-nothing could stop her from cheering on and supporting her grandkids- and their friends- in whatever they were doing
We have yet to find anyone that could out cheer her
Ian and Joey will forever be changed because they were loved by her.
Mary was a fierce protector of those she cared for and never met a person she wasn’t willing to help
She spent many years of her life caring for others-and would do anything she could to make their lives easier
She will be missed more than we can say.
We are the people we are because of who she believed we could be.
A celebration of life will take place Tuesday
Minnesota with a visitation at 10 am and funeral at 11 am

OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- Baltimore Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta was noncommittal Tuesday when asked if he expected tight end Mark Andrews to remain with the team
"I never know what's going to happen," DeCosta said at the Ravens' predraft news conference
is entering the final year of his four-year
$56 million contract and is coming off one of the most frustrating seasons of his career
He averaged 39.6 receiving yards per game last season
which was the worst since his 2018 rookie season
The low point for Andrews came during Baltimore's 27-25 AFC divisional-round playoff loss in Buffalo
where he dropped a 2-point conversion that would have tied the game with 1:33 remaining
All of this has led to speculation as to whether Baltimore would be open to trading Andrews during the draft
But Andrews is a three-time Pro Bowl tight end who has been Lamar Jackson's favorite target
Andrews ranks third in franchise history with 436 receptions (36 shy of the Ravens record) and second with 5,530 yards receiving (248 shy of the team mark)
Andrews surpassed Jamal Lewis as the Ravens' all-time touchdown leader and has totaled 51 for his career
his leadership is so valued here," DeCosta said
And I think we're in the business of keeping as many great players as we can
there's always a lot of unpredictability with the draft
The Ravens picked up Andrews' $4 million roster bonus on March 17
The Ravens have plenty of depth at tight end with rising backup Isaiah Likely
who set career highs last season in receptions (42)
receiving yards (477) and touchdown catches (six)
Entering the final year of his rookie deal
Likely has repeatedly stepped up when Andrews has been injured and could be a prime candidate to receive a contract extension
But Ravens coach John Harbaugh provided a vote of confidence for Andrews at the annual league meeting last month
"I do fully expect him to be playing for us next year," Harbaugh said on March 31
Mark would be one of the few guys I would expect to be here
and] we've got Pat Ricard all in place doing all those jobs."
The low point of tight end Mark Andrews' season came during Baltimore's 27-25 AFC divisional-round playoff loss in Buffalo, where he dropped a 2-point conversion that would have tied the game with 1:33 remaining. Gregory Fisher/Imagn ImagesDeCosta also declined to go into specifics about a potential contract extension with running back Derrick Henry
His 18 touchdowns set a new franchise single-season record
"So we have a lot of different balls in the air right now," DeCosta said
I'm not going to talk about what we're doing
what we're not doing behind the scenes business-wise with these guys
I don't think it's good for me to do that."
