Texas – Smithson Valley staved off a fourth-quarter flurry from the Angleton Wildcats and emerged on top 21-14 on Saturday at McLane Stadium in Waco
The Rangers have earned a trip to the 2024 UIL Class 5A Division I state championship game
Smithson Valley enjoyed a 14-0 halftime lead thanks to two second-quarter touchdowns: a 3-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Cade Spradling to wide receiver Brody Day and a 15-yard scamper from tailback Brad Sowersby with 2:05 left until halftime
the Wildcats (13-2) mounted their charge in the fourth quarter
During a Smithson Valley offensive possession
the Angleton defense forced a Spradling fumble
The beneficiary was Wildcats defensive lineman Cam Brown
who recovered the Smithson Valley turnover and returned it for a touchdown
Although Angleton missed the ensuing extra point
running back Travon Waddy punctuated the Wildcats' best offensive drive with a 1-yard touchdown run
Angleton attempted and converted its two-point try when quarterback Bryce Duron found Wesley Jackson to knot the game at 14 with 5:08 left in regulation
called a bootleg with Spradling and he did the rest
Spradling found an opening on the left side of the field and ran it in for a touchdown that put the Rangers (13-2) ahead to stay
Smithson Valley will head back to AT&T Stadium in Arlington
for a chance to capture a state championship for the second time in as many years
21 title game will be the Region II champion Highland Park Scots (14-1)
a Dallas-area football power that boasts a rich football tradition with six state championships and famous alums like Doak Walker
have yet to win a state title in its history
Highland Park last met a San Antonio-area team with a UIL football state championship on the line in 1947 when Brackenridge defeated the Scots 22-13

In a rematch of an 11-5A Division I regular season thriller
Angleton and La Porte delivered once again in a 5A-Division I Region III championship game that was an old school
came out on the winning end to punch its ticket to a state semifinal
The key this time was Angleton was able to contain La Porte freshman RB Sean Simon
who ran for an incredible 351 yards in the first meeting
Both teams failed to do much of anything on their opening two drives of the game, but that changed on Angleton’s third series of the game after a shanked La Porte punt set AHS up at the Bulldogs 38-yard line
Angleton would take a 3-0 lead on a 35-yard Ivan Rodriguez field goal with 3:36 left in the first quarter
La Porte would answer with a nice drive of their own taking a 7-3 lead on a one-yard touchdown run from Sean Simon right as the first quarter ended
The key play was a 40-yard pass completion for La Porte on 3rd and 16 from QB Aiden Seanz to ATH Ricky Sandolph
Angleton would take a 10-7 lead on a 34-yard touchdown run from RB Jamarcus Shockley
the key play in the drive was facing a 3rd and 29 Angleton was bailed out by a defensive penalty on La Porte that gave the Wildcats an automatic first down and kept the drive alive
La Porte would have an answer right before halftime as the Bulldogs would take a 14-10 lead with under a minute left in the half on a six-yard touchdown run from Tyrese Barnes
The drive was spurred on by a pair of facemask penalties on Angleton that gave La Porte a free thirty yards
Angleton would open the second half with good field position as Kaden Edwards would return the kickoff to the Wildcats 40-yard line
That good field position would set the Wildcats up to cut the lead to 14-13 as Rodriguez would make a 22-yard field goal with 8:41 left in the third quarter
La Porte would extend the lead less than a minute later as Sandolph would score on a 40-yard touchdown run to give the Bulldogs a 21-13 lead with 7:54 left in the third quarter
Momentum appeared to be on La Porte’s side after the score as the Bulldogs forced a three and out and would take over at the Angleton 29-yard line
The Bulldogs would march to the Angleton one-yard line
but the game would flip on its head as Angleton’s defense would make a massive stand on 4th and goal to give the Wildcats momentum
AHS would march 96-yards to tie the game at 21-21 with 10:26 left in the game
QB Bryce Duron would connect with sophomore WR Wesley Jackson for a 17-yard touchdown pass
Duron would hook up with Juel Patterson for the two-point PAT
Duron and Jackson earlier in the drive connected on a 3rd and 12 that kept the drive going
Angleton with momentum would force a La Porte three and out and after the punt would take over near midfield with a chance to retake the lead for the first time since the first quarter
The Wildcats would take a 24-21 lead with 6:24 left in the game as Rodriguez would connect on his third field goal of the day from 38-yards out
A La Porte penalty to give Angleton a first down on third and long proved to be a key play
From this point in the game Angleton’s defense would take over
after a surprise onside kick failed and gave La Porte good field position
Angleton DB Maurice Hightower would get an interception to give AHS the ball back with a three-point lead and 4:52 left in the game
Angleton would get stopped on downs after choosing to go for it on 4th and 5 from the La Porte 33
but again the Wildcats defense was up to the task stopping a La Porte hook and lateral attempt on 4th and 14
The Wildcats would take over with 2:11 left and would pick up a first down and to run out the clock and walk away from NRG Stadium with a hard-fought 24-21 victory

Friendswood coach Laura Peter’s young girls soccer team doesn’t always start out strong
but the Lady Mustangs came out on fire in a battle between the two District 20-5A leaders Monday night at Henry Winston Stadium
“I believe my team can do that anytime they set their minds to it,” she said
“We’ve had some games where maybe we weren’t that focused
and we were playing for being at the top of the (district) and we wanted it.”
The game was stopped halfway through the second half
thanks to the UIL’s new mercy rule this season (eight-goal lead with 20 minutes left in the game)
including two nice stops in the second half
to notch the Lady Mustangs’ seventh shutout of the season
Kates and freshman Kendall Miller each had an assist
which came into the game having outscored league opponents 26-3
The LadyCats had shutout their previous two district foes — Iowa Colony 3-0 and La Porte 6-0
has outscored its district opponents 33-2 with three shutouts

we didn’t expect to win this game by as big a margin as we did
Baxter got the only goal Friendswood needed off a pass from Pike 1:43 into the game
thanks to a nice pass from the right corner by Box
Kates made it 3-0 with 32:15 left in the first half
pushed the lead to 4-0 with 23:31 to play in the half
Kehres got her first goal 10:58 before halftime
Baggett had made a diving stop on a shot by Baxter
but the ball rolled free as Kehres leapt over the goalie

"So what this story raises is the question: Was the CIA incredibly
or was Angleton actually running an operation involving Oswald?"
National Archives on Tuesday released thousands of pages of declassified records related to the 1963 assassination of former President John F
The initial release on Tuesday contained 1,123 records
A subsequent release on Tuesday night contained 1,059 records
President Donald Trump told reporters on Monday that the release was coming
though he estimated it at about 80,000 pages
You've got a lot of reading," he said while visiting the John F
Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington
The newly released documents include a memo that for decades helped fuel speculation that the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) was somehow involved in the killing of JFK
was written by JFK's aide Arthur Schlesinger Jr
It warned Kennedy that the CIA was encroaching on his ability to direct foreign policy
no evidence was found in the memo that the CIA conspired with JFK's assassin
several of the newly-released pages showed the CIA had been tapping telephones in Mexico City between December 1962 and January 1963 to monitor the communications of the Soviets and Cubans at their diplomatic facilities
which Oswald visited in the months before the assassination
said in an MSNBC interview that the memo and other documents are more evidence that Kennedy deeply mistrusted the CIA
which had Oswald under surveillance long before Kennedy was killed
had put Oswald under surveillance starting in November 1959 and was "monitoring his politics
Angleton had a 180-page file "on Oswald on his desk a week before Kennedy went to Dallas" in November 1963
citing government documents that had been released earlier
or was Angleton actually running an operation involving Oswald?" Morley said
"We don't have the answer to that question because there are still some relevant records to come out
one file of another CIA officer who was involved in the pre-assassination surveillance of Oswald is still kept secret
nothing in the first documents examined undercut the conclusion that Oswald was the lone gunman
Despite the lone-gunman conclusion by the commission on the assassination of Kennedy
doubts and conspiracy theories have endured for decades
eyewitness accounts and further investigations
Many suspect shots came from multiple directions
especially the grassy knoll in front of the motorcade
which unexpectedly captured the assassination
contradicting the commission's rear-shot narrative
Some believe the CIA either orchestrated or failed to prevent the assassination due to tensions with Kennedy over the Bay of Pigs invasion and Cuba policy
Senate committee in 1975 exposed CIA plots to assassinate Cuba's late leader Fidel Castro
raising suspicions of retaliation or internal dissent
A 1963 memo revealed in previous releases shows a CIA officer concerned about Oswald's activities in Mexico City
where he visited Soviet and Cuban embassies weeks before the assassination
Critics argue the CIA withheld this information from the commission
possibly monitored or manipulated by the CIA
suggest a broader conspiracy or negligence
angered by former Attorney General Robert Kennedy's crackdown
may have been involved in the assassination
Some also suspect then Vice President Lyndon B
who became president after Kennedy's death
may have had a role in the assassination to seize power
Tampered or missing evidence adds to the mystery
Key items like Kennedy's brain (missing since the autopsy) and the "magic bullet" theory have long been suspected of being manipulated to support the lone-gunman conclusion
The "magic bullet" is said to have caused multiple wounds to both Kennedy and John Connally
who was also in the limousine during the assassination
a former Secret Service agent stated that he found a bullet in the limousine
Oswald's murky background and sudden death also leave his actual role unclear
The JFK assassination files have been trickling out for years
each release adding layers to the story but never entirely rewriting the official lone-gunman narrative
they've painted a picture of bureaucratic bungling and persistent gaps in information
Every batch of documents has zoomed in on Oswald's movements
especially his time in Mexico City and the CIA's watch over him
the 2017 and 2021 releases showed the CIA had tapped his calls and tracked his visits to Soviet and Cuban diplomats
But these details pointed more to intelligence blunders and red tape than a grand conspiracy
The CIA's reluctance to fully brief the Federal Bureau of Investigation or the commission keeps cropping up
but hard proof of a second shooter or deeper agency involvement remains elusive
provided more information about the CIA's wiretapping but didn't reveal any bombshells
These lingering gaps keep conspiracy theories alive as people fill in the blanks
has only fueled public curiosity and skepticism
Historians mostly see the files supporting the official story with extra red tape
about 99 percent of the roughly 320,000 documents are out there
with the latest batch being the most complete yet
But the JFK assassination remains a hot topic

Angleton pitchers Kadeyn Patin and Bella Nava teamed for a combined shutout
and the Ladycats found ways to score when they needed to in a 3-0 win over the hosting Lady Mustangs that clinched first place in district
The Friendswood Lady Mustangs softball team found an unfortunate time to have an offensive dry spell; Tuesday night
it cost them a District 20-5A championship
it could bring an abrupt finish to their 2025 campaign
“It’s not a good time to be in a slump; it’s not a good time to be playing bad softball,” said Friendswood head coach Jarrod Hunter
who has seen his team score just one run during a now two-game losing skid
Speed on the base paths helped Angleton score two runs in the top of the second inning
Gracie Walker looped a single into shallow center field
and then her courtesy runner Jori Bernier beat a throw to second base on a fielder’s choice grounder
and Layla Rodriguez followed with another walk to force a runner home
who reached on the fielder’s choice earlier
made it home ahead of an attempted force-out throw at the plate on a fielder’s choice grounder to make the score 2-0
The Ladycats’ base running prowess again came into play in scoring a run in the top of the fourth when Walton hustled for a leadoff double
was moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt
and then scored on a wild pitch for the final tally
Friendswood wasn’t without scoring opportunities
getting a runner on the base paths with less than two outs in four separate innings
The Lady Mustangs’ biggest scoring threat came in the bottom of the fifth when they left the bases loaded
Madelyn Convery led off the bottom of the fifth with a walk
and Chloe Aldrich’s one-out double lashed to left-center field put two runners in scoring position
but a line-out to third base ended the inning
we’re struggling to get that key hit,” Hunter said
we’ve gotten key hits and the offense has been unbelievably potent
Angleton’s starting pitcher Patin surrendered three hits and four walks with two strikeouts in her five shutout innings for the win in the circle
Nava slammed the door on the game for the save by retiring the final six Lady Mustangs batter in order with four strikeouts
Aldrich (2-for-4) and Ayleen Cervantes (2-for-3) had multi-hit games
Friendswood (8-3 in District 20-5A) has one more regular season game to shake its hitting funk 6:30 p.m
A win formally clinches the district’s Division II No
“It’ll be nice to get out and score some runs — just get that excitement back and get in the win column and get a little bit of confidence before it’s time to head to the playoffs,” Hunter said
