ANN ARBOR
– A popular restaurant in Ann Arbor has closed its doors for good
Red Hawk Bar & Grill posted on social media that “we have come to the difficult decision to close our doors after 33 years of business.”
Red Hawk Bar & Grill has been serving customers at its South State Street location since 1992.
The company says the reasoning behind the closing was due to the pandemic and rising food costs which “made it increasingly difficult to continue operating in the way we had always hoped.”
“The past few years have tested us in all the ways we never anticipated, and while we’ve fought to overcome these challenges, the financial strain has become insurmountable,” the post read.
The restaurant went on to thank its customers who have supported the business over the past 33 years and says it’ll cherish the memories they’ve created.

winning the doubles point for the 14th straight match
At No. 3, the duo of Piper Charney and Emily Sartz-Lunde broke at 2-1 and consolidated the break in the ensuing game for a 3-1 lead
Michigan was one game away from clinching the doubles point, up 5-2 at No. 1 and 5-4 at No. 2. It was the No. 2 pair of Reese Miller and Julia Fliegner that did the honors
Miller and Fliegner raced out to a 3-0 lead before ASU answered to get back on serve at 3-3
Fliegner served out the match in the ensuing game to put the first point on the board
Michigan won five first sets in singles action, highlighted by Jessica Bernales rallying from down 5-1 for a 7-5 win
She fought off a pair of set points in the sixth game and proceeded to win the next six games for the win
Miller pushed the Michigan lead to 2-0 with a 6-2
Miller used fast starts in each set to account for Michigan's second point

69-ranked Sara Svetac to extend the Wolverine lead to 3-0
Fliegner broke for a 4-2 lead in the first set and won the final two games to take it

University of Michigan President Santa Ono announced Sunday that he will step down from leading the university after being selected as the sole finalist for the presidency of the University of Florida
Ono wrote that he expects to assume the new role later this summer once the appointment is approved by the University of Florida's board of governors
“I have informed the Chair of the University of Michigan Board of Regents
given the deep bond Wendy and I have formed with this extraordinary community.”
urging him to enlist the university in resistance against President Donald Trump's threats to strip colleges of research dollars unless they end their DEI efforts
scrub curricula of far-left ideology and aggressively combat antisemitism
Ono has served as UM's president for slightly more than 2.5 years
making his tenure the shortest in university history
his tenure will be shorter than Lee Bollinger
who resigned in 2001 after six years to lead Columbia University
Ono's two predecessors held the positions longer: Mary Sue Coleman served 12 years before retiring in 2014
and Mark Schlissel served 7.5 years before he was removed by the Board of Regents in 2022

Ono has served as the 15th president of the University of Michigan since October 2022
He called serving as UM's president during the past three academic years a distinct honor
I have been inspired beyond words by the vibrancy
“I will miss the extraordinary intellectual vitality that fills our classrooms and laboratories
the sublime sounds of our musical and theatrical performances
and the roar of fans cheering on the Wolverines — or singing ‘Mr

As the news broke Sunday evening of Ono's plans to depart Ann Arbor
the University of Florida also announced its presidential search committee unanimously recommended Ono to be considered by its board of trustees as the sole finalist to become the university’s 14th president
“On behalf of the Presidential Search Committee
Santa Ono as the sole finalist to be the University of Florida’s next president,” Rahul Patel
chair of the Presidential Search Committee
“Throughout an extensive and thorough process
we sought a leader who could match UF’s extraordinary momentum
understand its role as the flagship university of one of the most dynamic states in the country
and inspire our community to reach even greater heights
Ono’s proven record of academic excellence
innovation and collaborative leadership at world-class institutions made him our unanimous choice
We are confident he is the right person to build on UF’s strong foundation and help realize our bold vision for the future.”
said he could not provide a comment about Ono's announcement because he said he had just learned of the news 45 minutes prior: "I don't have all the facts," he said
Controversies and challengesOno said earlier this year that the University of Michigan
is facing enormous challenges as it navigates executive orders issued by Trump
Ono and other university leaders recently closed the Office of Diversity
Equity and Inclusion and shifted resources to other student programs
pre-professional counseling and other efforts that strengthen community
promote a sense of belonging and expand accessibility."
the University of Michigan's Faculty Senate adopted a resolution that called on the university's administration to enter into a mutual defense pact with other members of the Big Ten to collectively resist threats to academic freedom and other actions by the Trump administration
Nearly 93% of University of Michigan Faculty Senate voters backed the resolution
Other supported resolutions urged UM administrators to maintain or reinstate all legally permissible diversity
and inclusion initiatives and to safeguard international faculty

some UM regents called for more from the school's president
"Now is the time to stand up and be counted," said Regent Mark Bernstein
"It's not the time to stand in the shadows
We need to do a better job of speaking with clarity and purpose about our work around diversity."
A report in 2024 by the New York Times on UM’s DEI initiatives estimated them to cost $250 million
"We are eliminating bureaucratic overspending and making Michigan more accessible," wrote Regent Sarah Hubbard
"I will continue to push for even greater financial support for talented students with financial need."
More: Former employees sue UM, allege they were fired following pro-Palestine protests
Ono's impending departure also comes amid a lawsuit filed by eight former University of Michigan employees alleging they were fired and banned from working at the university because they spoke out in support of Palestinians' human rights and called on UM to divest from Israel
The suit also accuses the board of regents of dismissing the employees without proper notice
The plaintiffs said the climate on campus has changed significantly since the Oct
Hamas attack and subsequent escalation of the Israel-Gaza war
The University of Michigan saw a pro-Palestinian encampment on campus that lasted nearly a month
Ono cited fire safety concerns as the reason for the university’s decision to dismantle the encampment
Finley: University of Michigan regents push Ono to defy Trump
Ono joined UM from the University of British Columbia after the school wrestled with turmoil
such as the regents' January 2022 firing of then-President Mark Schlissel after an investigation found inappropriate conduct with an employee
The university also grappled with sexual assault scandals
including one involving the late-physician Robert Anderson
who was accused of sexually assaulting former students
which led to a settlement in September 2022 with more than 1,000 people of $490 million

Regents ratified a new contract for Ono in October
extending his presidency at the time another eight years to 2032 after serving as president for two years
The new contract also boosted his base salary to $1.3 million
which is 33% more than the $975,000 annual salary he got when starting in 2022
The only other public university president to rival Ono's contract at that time was the one for former University of Florida President Ben Sasse

WASHTENAW COUNTY, Mich. – A man from Washtenaw County is facing federal charges after allegedly coercing children as young as 10 years old for pornographic images on Discord and exchanging sexually graphic messages with multiple children.
Cody Brian Pavasco faces federal charges of sexual exploitation of children, receipt and distribution of child pornography and coercion and enticement of minors.
On Feb. 18, 2024, a mother reported to Mesquite police that she found chat messages on her young daughter’s Discord that were sexual in nature between her daughter and another user.
The conversation the mother found happened the night before and appeared to be a continuation of an earlier conversation that was deleted.
The mother gave police consent to search the phone the child used and found sexually graphic messages and images exchanged between the child and the other user beginning on Feb. 17, 2024.
The conversation continued into Feb. 18, 2024.
Police obtained a search warrant to request subscriber information for the Discord account that talked to the child. Comcast provided information on the IP address associated with the account to Pavasco in Ann Arbor.
Court documents said the phone number on the Comcast account matched the number associated with the Discord account.
On April 17, 2024, the mother contacted police again, reporting her young daughter had been in contact with the same user again. The conversations were, again, sexually graphic.
She showed the Discord account and provided screenshots of the “About Me” section, which showed that the user lived in Ann Arbor but was from South Bend, Indiana.
Police requested updated subscriber information from Discord on Nov. 22, 2024. On Nov. 25, 2024, Discord responded, reporting that the account was still associated with the original user who contacted the child. The billing information was under Pavasco and associated with the same address in Ann Arbor.
However, a different IP address was used to log into the account between Sept. 16, 2024, and Nov. 22, 2024. Comcast reported the IP address was listed as an apartment in Ypsilanti.
A search warrant for the Discord account was authorized by the Eastern District of Michigan on Dec. 17, 2024.
The data provided by Discord included additional sexually graphic chats with other children between the ages of 10 and 16 years old between March 2023 and October 2023.
In one conversation, authorities said Pavasco allegedly asked for naked photos after a child told him she was less than 16 years old.
According to court documents, Pavasco used to live in Ann Arbor and has an Indiana driver’s license matching the information the mother who reported the conversations provided to police.

On Saturday morning, I observed nearly 400 protesters gathered outside a Tesla showroom in Ann Arbor
They were armed with flags and cardboard signs
and they said they felt like America's democracy was under siege
I attended another protest outside a mall in Troy
I noticed that the crowds in Ann Arbor and Troy were primarily people over the age of 65
and retired from jobs that depended on public funding as teachers
They leaned left on the political spectrum
Some described themselves as "anti-Trump" or "anti-Republican" or "pro-Democracy."
Others said they'd shifted from the Republican Party to the Democratic Party in their younger years
As appalled as they were with the current administration
I noticed they were also disillusioned with the Democrats
"I'm also not too pleased with our Democrats," said 77-year-old James Morse
who was protesting in Ann Arbor as a member of Indivisible
a grassroots organization for progressive causes that helped mobilize several protesters on Saturday
"We need to put more pressure on them because this is a very unusual situation
It's not normal and we need to resist in every way we can."
Moderate voters also took issue with the new administration
and now they just seem unreasonable," 68-year-old Margaret Bialecki told me
protesters lined up on the sidewalk outside the mall and interacted with the cars driving in and out of the parking lot
On the handful of times a Cybertruck passed through
and the passengers honked in an unspoken battle of ideology — and taste in cars
I chatted with more than 20 people about what drove them to action on a rainy Saturday
and future generations were being silenced by the whims of billionaires in the Oval Office
"We've never had people in government who actually are trying to destroy our government
and being bald-faced about it," said 73-year-old Maria Marcotte
who is the mother of the Michigan congresswoman Haley Stevens and was protesting in Troy
one woman who asked not to be named told me this was a "core assault on democracy." She said there had been a "loss of all democratic norms
rule of law," which was "terrifying." She added: "I'm pretty old
Several people in Ann Arbor said Musk didn't concern them before he stepped into politics. But now that he's working with Trump
I wanted to buy a Tesla," 69-year-old Judah Garber told me
"I'm really most concerned now with his actions in his unelected role as
At the core of any protest is the question of who and what will feel the impact
Several attendees told me the most achievable goal of these demonstrations was to influence the people passing by
and those who were one degree removed from it all

University of Michigan president Santa Ono says he’s planning to leave his post for a new job in Florida.
Ono released a letter from the U-M Office of the President, announcing he’s a finalist for the same job at the University of Florida.
"I write today to share that I have been selected as the sole finalist for the presidency of the University of Florida, and once the appointment is approved by their Board of Governors, I expect to assume that role later this summer. I have informed the Chair of the University of Michigan Board of Regents, Kathy White, of my decision. This decision was not made lightly, given the deep bond Wendy and I have formed with this extraordinary community," Ono wrote.
"The University of Michigan — and the State of Michigan — have forever captured my heart. It has been a profound privilege to be part of this extraordinary community and this remarkable state."
Ono took over as U-M president in October of 2022.
"In the weeks ahead, I will work closely with the Chair of the Board of Regents to ensure a smooth and seamless transition," Ono added.

The University of Michigan is expected to begin a search for its 16th president following Santa Ono's announcement that he expects to step down to accept the top job at the University of Florida
which would make his the shortest tenure of any UM president
Here's a look at UM's past presidents and interim and acting leaders
returned on an interim basis to guide the university following the sudden firing of Mark Schlissel
Schlissel became the first physician-scientist to lead Michigan when he assumed the post on July 1
but was dismissed suddenly from the post after an investigation found evidence of improper conduct with an employee
Coleman came to the university after seven years helming the University of Iowa and became the first female president
guiding Michigan through the Great Recession
She led the university's $3.2 billion Michigan Difference fundraising campaign
oversaw several building projects and championed diversity before her retirement
Pierpont Collegiate Professor and professor of business administration
was selected to lead Michigan following the sudden departure of Lee Bollinger
rose to become dean of UM's law school before leaving to be provost at Dartmouth
He was president as Michigan defended a pair of lawsuits against its affirmative action policies
which ultimately resulted in split decisions in the U.S
The rulings came after he departed to become president of Columbia University
from which he retired as president in 2023
Neal was vice president of research when he was tapped to lead the university following James Duderstadt
Duderstadt served as provost and vice president of academic affairs before being selected as Michigan's 11th president
a program designed to increase diversity and focused on preparing students for a more global world before announcing that he would step down
stepped in as interim president following the resignation of Harold Shapiro

led Michigan during a period of downsizing before leaving to become president of Princeton University
A former vice president of academic affairs
Smith led the university following Fleming's departure
who came to UM from the University of Wisconsin
was a labor relations specialist and guided the university with little unrest through a tumultuous period for American universities
1951-67The university nearly doubled its student population during the tenure of Hatcher
who came to UM from the position of vice president at Ohio State University
His leadership marked the acquisition of the North Campus
as well as the creation of the Flint and Dearborn campuses
Ruthven led UM through the Great Depression and war years and the start of post-war expansion after distinguished career in zoology at the university
Little was just 36 when he was named university president
having previously led the University of Maine
His reform-minded approach to the university led to tensions and he resigned in 1929
was chosen to helm the university following the death of Marion Burton
1920-25Burton came to UM from the presidency of the University of Minnesota and was the only one to have died in office
known for his public speaking and professional charm
doubled the university's annual income and paved the way for expansion before his death of a heart attack in February 2025
1909-1920Hutchins was initially named interim president following the 38-year presidency of James Angell
Hutchins outlasted others in a search that included eventual President Woodrow Wilson (then Princeton's leader)
who took over at Michigan after leaving the University of Vermont
led Michigan to become one of the nation's premier research institutions
during which he also assume diplomatic duties such as minister to China in 1880
he more than quadrupled the student population and championed it as a place to get "an uncommon education for the common man."
who served following Erastus Haven and also during Angell's diplomatic missions
was the first president under which women were admitted to the university (1870)
1863-69Haven was the first president to win an appropriation from the state legislature after succeeding Henry Tappan in 1863
Haven helped mend fences following Tappan's departure amid disagreements with the board of regents
Tappan broadened the university's teaching from what was known as a classical curriculum to one that embraced scientific teaching and led the creation of the library
The university was founded in 1817 and was reconstituted in Ann Arbor in 1837 under the direction of the board of regents until Tappan was selected its first president
The Michigan football program is officially in its downtime − or as close as it ever comes to it
The vast majority of players were finishing up exams as the final week of April turned into the first week of May
the objective for players is to stay in good condition
There won't be any official interviews with the program until August
so here are three all-encompassing thoughts on the state of each phase of the football team before summer
and the experienced graduate student Mikey Keene
who has more than 2,200 snaps and 1,000 pass attempts in college
Even though Keene was hurt in spring and the competition didn't play out as originally expected
he could still factor into the 2025 season
But it's Underwood who running back Jordan Marshall called a "freak" and a "generational talent."
ANALYSIS: Bryce Underwood spring game grade: New star QB aggressive but sloppy
No matter who ends up as the signal caller
there's no doubt the attack will look different than 2024
The receiver room is more talented with the addition of 6-foot-5 Donaven McCulley as well as incoming four-star freshman Andrew Marsh
Pair that with Lindsey's desire to attack vertically, it feels like an impossibility U-M finishes as the worst Power Four passing offense for the second straight season − even though the Wolverines have to replace Colston Loveland
who led the team in every receiving category in 2024
That’s his vision,” McCulley said earlier this spring
we’re gonna set the line of scrimmage with the run game
(but) he really wants to get the ball down the field a lot more.”
"When you play a schedule like ours and you're in the Big Ten
So we're going to have to have other guys that are going to step up and have opportunities to make plays when me and Justice need a break or need something there or somebody's a little banged up."
One of the hardest questions posed to Moore after the spring game was who stood out on defense
“I could be here for a while talking about that,” he said
“You just talk about the whole defensive line
I feel like there's 10 guys that can play ..
The Wolverines feel they have six rotational defensive tackles: Tre Williams (Clemson)
Even though the Wolverines lost two first-round picks from the line in Mason Graham (Browns) and Kenneth Grant (Dolphins)
and another Day 2 selection in Josaiah Stewart (Rams)
the leader of this unit made a bold proclamation after the spring game
“I really feel like there’s no drop-off since last year,” Moore said
When taking into account how U-M ended last season
allowing just 29 points in the final three games including a pair of top-15 matchups against Ohio State and Alabama
coordinator Wink Martindale's unit may be able to start stronger with more scheme familiarity
The linebackers return with Jaishawn Barham and Ernest Hausmann
the best defense in the country,” Marshall said
“That’s a privilege that I get to go against every single day.”
WHO TO WATCH: These 12 Michigan players could hear their name called in 2026 draft
The reason Michigan beat Ohio State and Alabama last season is because of kicker Dominic Zvada
Zvada went 6-for-6 on field goals in the two upset wins to end the season
That included a 54-yarder in a swirling wind at Ohio Stadium just before halftime
and the game-winner from 21 yards with just more than two minutes to play
OSU's Jayden Fielding missed from 38 yards and 34 yards
Had any one of those things not happened − OSU going 0 for 2 and U-M going 2 for 2 − it likely would have been a different ending
Zvada could be the best kicker in the nation
Michigan will be positioned to make the 12-team College Football Playoff
U-M also brought in former Missouri punter Luke Bauer as competition for Hudson Hollenbeck
Bauer had 49 punts (41.8 yards per attempt)
He had 13 punts downed inside the opponent 20-yard line compared to five touchbacks
and ranked eighth in the SEC in punt average
Brown really wants to see improved this year is the return game
U-M has options but needs to find ways to shorten fields and change games when the opportunity presents
"We're trying to evaluate everybody that is a playmaker that could get the ball in their hands," Brown said this spring
everybody back there just to see who could run the return the best."

Maddie Erickson (Michigan Photography)Wolverines Shut Out Minnesota in Five Innings to Even Weekend Series5/3/2025 5:02:00 PM | Softball
-- The University of Michigan softball team bounced back in a big way to even its weekend series with Minnesota
scoring in all but one inning en route to an 8-0
five-inning decision against the Golden Gophers on Saturday afternoon (May 3) at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium
Junior third baseman Maddie Erickson posted two hits and drove in four of Michigan's first five runs over the first and third innings; sophomore right fielder Ella Stephenson went 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored to lead the Wolverine offense
Senior right-handed pitcher Lauren Derkowski (13-12) struck out two and allowed five hits and one walk en route to her fifth complete-game shutout of the season
10-11 Big Ten) scored three runs on three hits in the first inning -- quickly matching its hit total from the day before
pushing across their first run on a sacrifice fly
then a laced two-run Erickson single to left-center with two outs
Erickson came through with another two-run single with two outs in the fifth inning. Stephenson looped a single into shallow left, senior left fielder Ellie Sieler laced a two-out single past the Gopher pitcher and up the middle
and Erickson plated both with a gapper to right center
The Gophers' best scoring chance came in the fourth inning when they used a pair of singles and a throwing error to put runners on the corners with two outs. Derkowski responded with a four-pitch swinging strikeout to strand both.
Michigan also turned two double plays, including one to end the game in the fifth. The Gophers (20-29, 5-16 Big Ten) overturned the second out when a ball down the third-base line was ruled foul on review. The Minnesota batter instead flied out to left and, when the runner occupying first advanced to second without tagging up, Michigan easily doubled her off at first base.
The Wolverines will wrap up their regular season on Sunday (May 4) with a noon CT rubber game at Minnesota's Jane Sage Cowles Stadium. The finale will be streamed live on B1G+.
It was another recruiting miss for the Michigan football program on Saturday as top-100 running back Javian Osborne committed to Notre Dame over the Wolverines
Osborne was a Michigan football lean at one point
He did have a crystal ball projection for the Wolverines
Osborne canceled a visit to Texas a few months ago
and all signs pointed to Michigan football being the favorite to land his commitment
who is ranked 90th overall in the 2026 class
Michigan football has some other running back targets on the board
but it's clear that the Wolverines need to adjust their recruiting strategy
If the Wolverines continue with this wait-and-see approach to NIL
Michigan struggled in 2023 and 2024 when it didn't want to play the NIL game
the Wolverines are holding off because of the House settlement
and we have a recruiting fall-off because of it

The Wolverines didn't even give themselves a chance with No
The 2026 class could have been a juggernaut
but now the Wolverines are digging a hole they expect to dig out of later in the class
But maybe don't fall behind in the first place
The Michigan baseball team beat Ohio State 23-1 on Saturday in Columbus
The 22-run victory was the largest by the Michigan Wolverines in the series and improved Michigan to 28-17 on the season
Every Michigan baseball player reached base and scored a run in the game
pitching five scoreless innings to get the win
Robert Hamchuk capped the 16-run inning with a home run
The Wolverines finished with 13 hits but also took advantage of Ohio State errors and pitching woes
Cole Caruso was one of six Wolverines to have an extra-base hit
Michigan baseball is on the NCAA tournament bubble and will play two games against Ohio State on Sunday in a doubleheader
A split and another series win would be huge
The men's tennis team was knocked out of the NCAA tournament earlier this week
but after beating Youngstown State in the opening round
the Michigan Wolverines advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament with a 4-0 win over Arizona State on Saturday
The Wolverines got wins in singles from Julia Fliegner
Michigan also got wins in doubles from Fliegner/Miller
as well as Piper Charney/Emily Sartz-Lunde
The Wolverines will play Texas on Saturday

Tom Mars is the lawyer known most for taking on the NCAA. The Arkansas-based attorney was instrumental in getting Shea Patterson eligible for the Wolverines and has represented Jim Harbaugh for some of these NCAA battles.
Mars weighed in on Monday in the aftermath of Moore's suspension and noted just how heavy-handed the NCAA is being (though this suspension is self-imposed by Michigan) given that Moore's deleted texts were considered 'innocuous' as it pertains to the Connor Stalions saga and that the deletion was something of a knee-jerk reaction.
Mars wasn't the only one to have a strong reaction to the news, but some of the ire has been directed more at the University of Michigan athletic department rather than toward the NCAA.
Steve Deace, host of Michigan Podcast, turned his focus on the U-M AD considering that other institutions have tended to go to bat for their programs (Tennessee comes to mind) while Michigan is quick to capitulate.
Certainly, it won't make much of a difference with the NCAA and as far as the college football landscape is concerned, no matter how 'innocuous' the texts might be, without an explanatory statement, the action of suspending Moore is essentially an admission of guilt by the Michigan athletic department. With that in mind, Deace might be on to something.
Moore's actions fall under the NCAA's 'failure to cooperate' maxim, but he indicated that it was much ado about nothing last fall, when he said, "I'll just say this, is that I look forward to them being released, and that's it."

On May 4, 2025, the University of Michigan and the University of Florida announced a major leadership transition: Santa J. Ono, Ph.D., president of the University of Michigan since October 2022, has been unanimously recommended by the University of Florida's Presidential Search Committee as the sole finalist to become UF's 14th president
marks the end of Ono's tenure at Michigan and the beginning of a new chapter for both prestigious institutions
Ono expressed gratitude for his time at Michigan
"Serving as your president over these past three academic years has been a distinct honor
and alumni..." He highlighted Michigan's momentum and expressed confidence in its future
"I have every confidence that our exceptional leadership team
and our Board of Regents will come together behind a new leader
ensuring that Michigan's extraordinary momentum continues to serve the people of Michigan and the world."
The University of Florida's announcement praised Ono's track record and qualifications
stating "proven record of academic excellence
innovation and collaborative leadership at world-class institutions made him our unanimous choice." Interim UF President Kent Fuchs added
"If I could select a dream candidate for the University's next president
it would be Santa Ono," citing his approachable leadership style and ability to collaborate with diverse stakeholders
though these were unrelated to Ono's departure
Ono is expected to bring his expertise in academic leadership and public health
drawing on his experience at institutions like the University of British Columbia and the University of Cincinnati
The UF announcement noted that Ono's appointment aligns with the university's goal of maintaining its trajectory as a leading public research institution
The UF Board of Trustees is set to finalize the decision
with Ono expected to assume the presidency this summer
The University of Michigan has not yet announced plans for an interim president or the search for Ono's successor
The university's Board of Regents is expected to provide updates in the coming weeks as it prepares for this transition
This move represents a pivotal moment for both universities
Michigan faces the challenge of sustaining its momentum under new leadership
while Florida anticipates a transformative era under Ono's guidance
As Ono prepares to leave Ann Arbor for Gainesville
the higher education community will be watching closely to see how these institutions navigate their next chapters

Michigan Wolverines head football coach Sherrone Moore is reportedly expected to be suspended for two games during the 2025 season as part of self-imposed punishment by the athletic program in relation to the Connor Stalions advanced scouting scandal
sources with knowledge of the situation confirmed to ESPN's Dan Wetzel and Pete Thamel on Monday (May 5)
Moore had previously served as an interim head coach when his predecessor, now-Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh
was suspended for the first three games of the eventual 2023 national championship season for past recruiting violations
as well as the final three regular season games for the scandal centered around Stalions
a former defensive analyst accused of stealing opponents signs prior to his resignation in 2023
"Michigan is expected to suspend coach Sherrone Moore two games during the 2025 season as a self-imposed punishment in the advanced scouting case, industry sources tell me and @PeteThamel," Wetzel wrote on his X account
Moore will not be able to coach practice in the game weeks of the CMU and NEB games
Jim Harbaugh was allowed to coach in practice when he was suspended by NCAA
Was proposed a year earlier," Thamel added
Moore's suspensions will take place during Weeks 3 and 4
when the Wolverines will face Central Michigan and Nebraska
Moore will also reportedly be barred from any team-related duties during the game weeks of his suspensions and receive additional recruiting-related penalties
The NCAA will reportedly still be able to hand down its own punishment to Moore and the Michigan football program despite the self-imposed penalties
A final resolution is expected to be made publicly prior to the 2025 college football season
Moore went 8-5 (5-4 Big Ten) during his first season as Michigan's full-time head coach
which included an upset of arch rival and eventual national champion Ohio State
as well as a 19-13 win against Alabama in the 2024 ReliaQuest Bowl
The Michigan Wolverines are going to undergo a small setback this upcoming season
Dan Wetzel outlined what is expected of Moore’s punishment, as he won’t be present on the sidelines during a Week 3 matchup against Central Michigan and the Big Ten Week 4 conference opener against Nebraska.
“Moore will also receive additional recruiting-related penalties,” Wetzel wrote
“The NCAA could still further punish Moore in addition to any self-imposed school penalty
A final resolution is expected before the start of the season … Moore’s suspension ties back to Moore allegedly deleting a thread of 52 text messages with Stalions
a former Michigan staffer at the heart of Michigan’s alleged sign stealing scheme.”
with the Wolverines controlling the suspension’s terms
Moore is eligible to coach the rest of the season barring any other findings
there is a strong likelihood the suspension won’t impact the Wolverines’ season holistically given the significance of the impacted games
The Wolverines finished this past season 8-5 in Moore’s first year after succeeding Los Angeles Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh
Key wins included a road upset over eventual national champion Ohio State and a bowl win against Alabama

— University of Michigan's 15th president announced Sunday he is stepping down
Selected as the "sole finalist" for the presidency at the University of Florida
Ono announced Sunday he notified the Chair of the University of Michigan Board of Regents
that he will not be continuing at the University of Michigan and instead expects to begin his new role as president at University of Florida beginning this summer
"Every day, I have been inspired beyond words by the vibrancy, brilliance, and dedication of our faculty, staff, students, and alumni," Ono said
"I will miss the extraordinary intellectual vitality that fills our classrooms and laboratories
and the roar of fans cheering on the Wolverines — or singing “Mr
Brightside” together in joyful unity."
Serving as the university's president for three years
Ono highlighted several accomplishments in his final statement as president such as the “Campus Plan 2050: rethinking the use of our 3,600 acres," and increased affordability and access through "Go Blue Guarantee," free tuition to in-state students from families earning up to $125,000
"The University of Michigan — and the State of Michigan — have forever captured my heart
It has been a profound privilege to be part of this extraordinary community and this remarkable state," Ono said
"I have every confidence that our exceptional leadership team
ensuring that Michigan’s extraordinary momentum continues to serve the people of Michigan and the world."
Ono is scheduled to visit the University of Florida campus on Tuesday for a series of public forums with students

“No other public university combines UF’s momentum
its role as the flagship of one of the nation’s most important states
the extraordinary support from state leaders
and a shared vision across its entire community
These strengths make UF uniquely positioned not only to lead public higher education
but to stand among the most impactful institutions — public or private — in the world
I am honored and energized to be considered for this historic opportunity.”

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has dropped all charges against seven pro-Palestinian protesters arrested last year on the University of Michigan Diag
The seven were facing misdemeanor charges of trespassing as well as felony charges of resisting and obstructing police
The defendants in the cases were: Oliver Kozler
smiled and posed for a photo with their attorneys in the courtroom after learning the news
'it's a great day,' " Lewis said to the others
when their lawyers entered the courtroom from a meeting in the judge's chambers
Outside the courthouse before the proceedings began
about 50 demonstrators rallied in front of a sign reading "Drop the charges." Speakers used an amplifier to address the crowd decrying the war in Gaza as genocide
the decision to drop the charges stunned defense lawyers
who were prepared to offer closing arguments in a preliminary exam that began in February
Nessel faced calls for her to recuse herself for what critics describe as bias in the case
In a statement issued after the court hearing
Nessel defended herself and her decision to seek the felony charges
“We did so based on the evidence and facts of the case," the statement said
"I stand by those charges and that determination."
Nessel criticized Ann Arbor District Judge Cedric Simpson for the slow pace of the case
saying there'd been "months and months" of court hearings without a ruling on whether there was enough evidence to send the case to circuit court for trial
the case has become a lightning rod of contention," Nessel's statement said
“Baseless and absurd allegations of bias have only furthered this divide
The motion for recusal has been a diversionary tactic which has only served to further delay the proceedings."
was a letter from the Jewish Federation of Greater Ann Arbor
The letter was submitted to the court May 2
"The notion that AG Nessel is biased against Muslims and Americans of Arab descent is unfounded and deeply offensive," the letter said
"Nessel has a strong history of uplifting those in both the Muslim and Arab American communities."
The Free Press has asked her office to elaborate
"We have learned that a public statement in support of my office from a local nonprofit has been directly communicated to the court," Nessel's statement said
"The impropriety of this action has led us to the difficult decision to drop these charges."
When none of the defense attorneys objected
They burst into applause at the decision and began chants of "Free Palestine."
said the charges never should have been brought
this was not about a felony conduct," Makled said
"This was the criminalization of free speech
and I'm glad the state finally saw fit to dismiss it," he said
the group moved outside where a small celebration started
Spectators enjoyed coffee and bagels while the defendants and their lawyers addressed the group
"I think that the possibility of recusal was going to be so embarrassing for Nessel that she just couldn't bear it," Lewis said
And that just goes to show that the bullies and badges and the top pig are just cowards."
Lewis acknowledged she still faces charges in a separate case involving a protest at Festifall
the school's annual student organizing fair
A hearing in that case is scheduled for next month and she hopes to see those charges dismissed as well
but I think that this is a really good sign," she said
Lauren Askew represents MacKeen-Shapiro and gave him the news before the hearing
after an earlier meeting among the attorneys
MacKeen-Shapiro appeared speechless at the news
"I thought she was just happy to see me but then I'm like
MacKeen-Shapiro appeared in court wearing an ankle tether to monitor his movements
He was ordered to wear it after being charged with a bond violation for an incident in March when he was seen hanging posters in an area known as the Fish Bowl inside Mason Hall
According to a police report on the incident
MacKeen-Shapiro was photographed by private security agents
They turned their photographs over to police
MacKeen-Shapiro said he wore the tether to graduation over the weekend and was looking forward to getting it removed now that the case had been dropped
Like many protesters at U-M, these defendants faced misdemeanor trespassing charges, but Nessel decided to seek felony charges in September for resisting and obstructing police
Nessel said at the time that they used "physical force to counter" the police officers who were trying to clear them from an encampment they had established on the Diag
Defense attorneys said they were offered plea deals before the exam began
"They don't feel like they've done anything wrong," Makled said
The decision to drop the charges came after two full days of testimony spread out over three months. It included testimony from several U-M police officers who took the stand to describe their interactions with the defendants
Police were trying to clear an encampment established on the Diag to protest the war in Gaza and the university’s refusal to divest its endowment holdings in companies connected to Israel
Fire Marshal Andrew Box also testified that the tents and other parts of the encampment posed a fire hazard
The officers described the protesters' conduct such as ignoring police commands to move back
throwing tables and chairs in the path of police and linking arms and refusing to move
The officers’ body cameras captured video of the confrontations that were played in court
often with the officers narrating what the court was seeing

Michigan’s 10% excise tax on recreational cannabis brought in over $331 million in 2024
About 70% of that revenue is split up annually between the state’s School Aid Fund and the Michigan Transportation Fund
which goes out to support millions of students in the state’s public schools
as well as fund road repair and bridge maintenance projects statewide
The rest is handed out directly to the cities
and tribes that have opted into legal marijuana sales—all based on how many licensed retailers they have in their jurisdiction
For most Michigan cities—including Lansing
and Grand Rapids—that tax money goes straight into their respective general funds
where it goes on to help support a wide range of public services from parks and public safety to infrastructure and economic development
But that also means the cannabis connection isn’t always obvious to local residents
“It’s an extra $1.4 million that we can use for anything,” Schor said
“It’s a drop in the bucket for a $300 million city budget
An extra firefighter or code compliance officer on the street is going to make our city a safer place
Schor said the Capital City has dealt with growing pains as some dispensaries have closed in recent years
appears to have “stabilized” locally—which means the city is also starting to bank on the tax revenue as an integral part of the budget
there are less things that we can do to provide services for our citizens,” he said
we can legitimately say thanks to the cannabis industry
City officials in Detroit told The MichiGanja Report that all of this year’s cannabis tax revenue will go into the general fund
where it will indiscriminately support all city services and programs
In Benton Harbor, city officials have also said they plan to put this year’s $233,000 cannabis tax windfall toward public safety and police protection, ultimately supporting “everything from police cars to the gas and payroll,” City Manager Alex Little told Bridge Michigan in February
And in Monroe Township, where weed taxes account for nearly 20% of its meager $5.8 million annual budget
the taxes from weed sales will inevitably end up funding … a bit of everything
have taken a more deliberate approach to spending tax revenue
In 2021, the Ann Arbor City Council passed a resolution directing all cannabis excise tax revenue to be tracked separately from other revenue sources—and reserved for programs focused on mental health
The idea was to reinvest cannabis profits into the very communities most harmed by decades of weed criminalization
that includes funding for deflection and diversion services to keep people out of jail
funding to support a homeless shelter downtown
and a still-developing “unarmed crisis response team” modeled after similar efforts in bigger cities like Atlanta and Denver
“If you compare it to other revenue sources
But it’s enough to get some important work done in the community,” Ann Arbor CFO Marti Praschan told The MichiGanja Report
“It seemed like a natural progression—to help those in need without having to make cuts elsewhere
It’s new revenue that segued into an opportunity to do some good work.”
Beyond the nearly $100 million in disbursements to local municipalities and tribes this year
more than $116 million in cannabis tax revenue was also sent to support public schools and fund road repairs
But not everyone thinks Michigan’s cannabis tax system is fully baked
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer recently proposed a new plan to raise $470 million a year for roads by imposing a new, 32% wholesale tax on marijuana—on top of the existing 10% excise tax and 6% sales tax already paid by consumers. The idea, part of her broader “MI Road Ahead” plan
aims to align cannabis taxes with other tobacco products and help fill more potholes statewide
The proposal is already making waves in the industry
with some retailers warning that it could drive up prices
But Whitmer has called Michigan’s current taxing structure one of the most “industry-friendly” in the country—suggesting there’s more to be milked from the cash cow
