MRI results are 'good news'May 4th
NEW YORK – Anthony Volpe was at the center of a concerned huddle during the eighth inning on Saturday
grimacing as his left shoulder was put through a battery of strength-test exercises on the left side of the Yankee Stadium infield
It seemed impossible not to consider a worst-case scenario
Just days ago, the Yankees lost second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. for at least a month to a right oblique strain
and now the other half of their double-play combination was saying he felt “a pop” in his shoulder after diving for a ground-ball single
That Volpe continued to play is encouraging (manager Aaron Boone said Sunday the results of X-rays and an MRI constituted “good news”), though it was hardly a banner inning for the shortstop. The Christopher Morel leadoff single that ticked off Volpe’s glove sparked a comeback against Mark Leiter Jr., and the go-ahead run scored on a Volpe error as the Yankees fell to the Rays, 3-2
Volpe was not in the starting lineup on Sunday
with Oswald Peraza handling shortstop duties
I felt OK and I felt like I had my strength,” Volpe said on Saturday
“I’ve never really had anything else pop or dislocate or anything like that
That statement prompts cautious optimism about Volpe’s situation
though Chisholm’s experience just days prior would warn against any overconfidence
After exiting Tuesday's game during the club’s series in Baltimore
saying it was precautionary and that he expected to be back in the lineup after a day or two
Chisholm was stunned when an MRI taken on Thursday in New York revealed not one
“I was super surprised when I saw the results,” Chisholm said
“It’s not as bad as it looks on the scan.”
So now the Yankees hope to avoid a similar situation with Volpe
their depth already being tested in multiple areas
Volpe said on Saturday he was able to swing a bat in the cages underneath the first-base grandstand and felt “good."
“We wanted to make sure strength-wise he was in a good position
The Rays used speed to slip past the Yankees
going 6-for-6 in stolen-base attempts against catcher Austin Wells
While Volpe flexed his shoulder between pitches in the eighth
pinch-runner Chandler Simpson swiped second base
then participated on the front end of a double steal that set up Curtis Mead’s game-tying bloop single
“They definitely ran a lot today and got good jumps,” Wells said
“They gave themselves opportunities to get in scoring position
I think that’s their game and what they do.”
José Caballero followed with a grounder to Volpe
unable to record an out as Brandon Lowe trotted home
Volpe said he “was trying to turn two before I secured the ball.”
The Yankees avoided further damage thanks to Cody Bellinger’s circus catch in left field
reaching high above his head to secure a Kameron Misner liner that appeared destined for extra bases

but I was glad I was able to make up the ground,” Bellinger said
The late shift spoiled an afternoon in which Aaron Judge and Wells homered for the Yanks
with Judge lifting his team-leading 11th -- the captain’s sixth in a first inning this season
Judge’s 71 career first-inning homers are tied with Derek Jeter for fourth most in franchise history; only Babe Ruth (126)
Mickey Mantle (103) and Lou Gehrig (84) hit more
Ryan Yarbrough tossed four innings of one-run, one-hit ball in his longest outing of the season, drawing a spot start in place of Clarke Schmidt, who was scratched from his scheduled outing due to right flank discomfort
and said he will prepare to face the Padres on Tuesday
Wells’ drive off Tampa Bay starter Zack Littell was the catcher’s sixth of the season
providing the Yanks with a fifth-inning lead
Eighth-inning singles by Trent Grisham and Bellinger set up a two-on
who has been excellent in all offensive situations
including with runners in scoring position (14-for-26
inducing Judge to hit a hard inning-ending grounder to shortstop Taylor Walls
you can’t get the job done every single time,” Bellinger said
NEW YORK -- Shortstop Anthony Volpe sat out Sunday for the New York Yankees' 7-5 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays
a day after he injured his left shoulder on a dive while trying to get to a grounder
MRI -- good news," Yankees manager Aaron Boone said
but I feel like we're probably in a good spot
Volpe remained in the game after his unsuccessful attempt for a backhand stab on Christopher Morel's eighth-inning single
which sparked a two-run rally in Tampa Bay's 3-2 win Saturday
Volpe said after the game he heard a pop in the shoulder
He's got some stuff that they feel like is older stuff
"He's definitely a little cranky in the shoulder today."
19 RBIs and four stolen bases in his third season with the Yankees
Oswald Peraza started at shortstop
New York already is missing second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. (strained right oblique), third baseman DJ LeMahieu (strained left calf), ace Gerrit Cole (Tommy John surgery) and right-hander Luis Gil (right lat strain)

As Kobe Byrant did with Julius Randle at the beginning of the latter’s NBA career
the 30-year-old veteran is now trying to teach his young teammate
Wolves coach Chris Finch has praised Randle for helping Edwards hone his pregame routine
“I’m just trying to find way I can improve
Ant has never had a problem working his butt off
always getting his reps and extra work in.”
Randle spoke Sunday as the Wolves prepared for their Western Conference semifinal playoff series
Randle played two seasons at the start of his career with Bryant
who retired in April 2016 and died in a helicopter crash in January 2020 at age 41
Now Randle is the wily veteran playing for his fourth NBA team who wants to pass along what he has learned from others
`What is the dude talking about?’ But now I give it a lot more
The true blessing is being able to pass it on to others
5.2 rebounds and 4.4 assists and shot 39.3% on three-pointers in the Wolves’ five-game
first-round playoff victory over the Lakers
“He’s playing both sides of the ball at a high level,” said Finch
who coached Randle with New Orleans as well
“I’ve never seen him locked in as defensively as he has been
over the last half of the season in particular and into the playoffs
Randle calls a lot of it an attempt to help Edwards
“He makes the game easy for us because he pulls in so much gravity on the court
It’s obviously easy playing with him because he just gets so much attention out there
Throughout the course of the year and being able to sit out [injured]
I said this dude has the chance to be one of the greatest players to touch a basketball
so what can I do to maximize his talent and make the game easier for him?”
Finch planned to watch Sunday night’s Golden State-Houston Game 7 from the comfort of his own home
so I choose to be at home,” he said with a wry smile
.The Wolves will play host to the Warriors in Game 1 on Tuesday after Golden State beat the Rockets 103-89
“We’re prepared for either team,” Finch said
Finch said this second-round playoff series might present the opportunity to play some younger players that the first round didn’t
Finch said he thought the first-round series might have presented more opportunities for rookie Terrence Shannon Jr. He played 13 minutes over parts of three games against the Lakers.
“We thought it might be a series where T.J. could help us,” Finch said. “We threw him in a few times and thought we’d use him more. We’re already ready to do that. This series could give us the opportunity to play some of our young guys, too. We’ll just see how it goes.”

Red Sox executive Craig Breslow confirmed that Casas will require surgery and isn't expected back this season
It's worth remembering that New York Mets closer Edwin Díaz missed an entire season after suffering a torn patellar tendon during the 2023 World Baseball Classic
he's been a productive hitter throughout his big-league career
he entered Friday's contest having averaged a 118 OPS+ and 29 home runs per 162 games
His presence in the Red Sox lineup is sure to be missed
this is the nature of professional sports: a player suffers an injury and the team must adjust
Who might the Red Sox turn to in order to fill Casas' cleats at the cold corner? Early indications suggest Abraham Toro, a 28-year-old veteran with a career 80 OPS+, will get the call to fill Casas' roster spot on Saturday
that might be considered or factored into the equation over the coming weeks
González benefits from offering the least friction of anyone presented in this article
Not only is he already on the active roster
he's earned the nod at first base every time the Red Sox have been opposed by a lefty starter
González has fared well in those assignments
batting .275/.341/.400 (109 OPS+) with five doubles
there's often a good reason for why teams deploy productive hitters in limited roles
his struggles with breaking balls have hampered his ability to offer much against righty pitchers
(He's posted a .551 OPS in his big-league career without the platoon advantage.) The Red Sox seem to know what González can and cannot do
suggesting they'll view him as part of the answer -- just not the entirety of it
Grissom isn't the Worcester hitter most people will think about in response to Casas' injury
including already having a spot on the 40-player roster as well as experience in the majors and at first base
Grissom has hit .289/.373/.452 so far this season
albeit with an ugly 11-to-25 walk-to-strikeout ratio
He's mostly disappointed since his promising 2022 debut
but he's only 24 years old and the Red Sox should figure out if he has a future on the big-league roster before he enters next spring without a minor-league option
Add in how Anthony is not yet on the 40-player roster
and he seems unlikely to be the initial internal solution the Red Sox throw at this problem
We're now moving to the external candidate portion of the article
Be warned: the following names are not going to impress you since
they're veterans stationed with someone else's Triple-A affiliate
teams are willing to accommodate these types if another team has a spot for them on the big-league roster -- either as a gesture of good faith or in response to the player possessing an upward mobility clause
One has to imagine the Mets would be willing to ship him to Boston if the Red Sox show interest
The Twins wouldn't appear to have reason to stand in his way if the Red Sox wanted to add him

Mayer & stories of the Double-A Sea Dogs1:28 PM UTCIan Browne
BOSTON -- While there is a uniqueness to most Minor League baseball cities
the Red Sox have one of the most coveted destinations
And that becomes clear for all to see in the pilot episode of “Grass Routes,” a new travel show available on-demand via MLB Network and MLB.TV that celebrates the unique vibe of Minor League Baseball communities
Portland was the first stop on the trail this show will blaze because it’s hard to beat a waterfront community with gorgeous ocean views and a plentiful supply of lobster
narrated by MLB Pipeline’s veteran prospect guru Jonathan Mayo
“They say that Maine is the way life should be
Portland is the way vacation should be every day
affordable housing and luxury housing."
Mayo interviews the marquee Minor Leaguers away from the ballpark
and there are some entertaining and insightful conversations
currently in Worcester with Anthony as he awaits his first call-up
comes into a lobster shack to eat with Mayo
“Sometimes you even take it for granted now that we’re here how awesome it is,” Mayer tells Mayo
“You don’t want to be someplace for too long
but if you’re going to be someplace for a year
Boston is less than two hours south of Portland
you’re probably going to see 10 Sea Dog hats in two minutes,” said Mayer
“It feels like the whole city loves the Sea Dogs
The end goal is to be a big leaguer and win the World Series
I’m where my feet are and I’m going to do everything I can to get better
I’m going to have fun and be in a great city as well.”
I started to learn how to cook and the basics of what to eat
and we’re going to make breakfast.' And we tried it once and Marcelo completely burnt the bacon and we just screwed it up and the smoke detector was going off and we were like
‘We’re never going to do this again and we haven’t cooked since.”’
Given that Mayer always brags about what a great cook his mom is
it’s maybe a little surprising he didn’t’ pick some of that up
“I’ve [busted] on him way too many times on interviews and stuff,” said Anthony
“He’s a great roommate but he can’t cook."
Both players loved all that Portland had to offer
It’s a great time during the summer,” Anthony said
it’s nice to set goals and say I want to be here by a certain time or I want to be in the big leagues by this age
but I think people forget to relax for a little bit and enjoy what you have and enjoy Portland
Baseball themes weave the episode together

NEW YORK − Anthony Volpe returned to the Yankees' starting lineup Monday night
after sitting out Sunday's game due to a sore left shoulder

It doesn't help that fans have been wondering for a while (albeit jokingly) whether or not Edwards is Jordan's son
For starters, the account NBA Centel is a parody account that had already received a temporary ban on X earlier in the year
The account's bio also clearly says PARODY ACCOUNT
has eight million views as of Monday morning
and some fans were hoping that it was fake
"that better be edited or im gonna crash out," one fan replied

But Grok confirmed that the NBA Centel account is a parody account
"However, @TheNBACentel is a known parody account, and there's no solid confirmation from credible sources to verify the image. Recent articles focus on Edwards' performance, not his appearance, leaving the claim uncertain. It’s possible, but I’d take it with a grain of salt until official sources confirm," Grok replied
Edwards going bald right before the series against the Warriors would've been shocking
but that isn't the case — at least as of now

Weiner is running for city council in New York
Is his candidacy a test of America’s capacity to forgive
A provocation for Democrats to stop clutching their pearls while Trump gropes his way to authoritarianism
From the June 2025 issue: ‘I run the country and the world’
One consequence of living in an age when nothing seems to matter is a tendency
to overcorrect and insist that everything matters
The return of Anthony Weiner raises Big Societal Questions
We need to hurry up and vote before Rudy Giuliani gets any ideas
I figured he might be subdued by having to play the penitent
There’s not much evidence of his campaign in the neighborhood
and his one-word email response to my interview request felt like a sigh: “Ok.”
“I’m a fucking Rorschach!” Weiner told me exuberantly
“My thing is so sui generis,” he continued
they fundamentally know perfectly what approach I should take
Donald Trump got elected as a 34-time felon.” Or lean into it
Make a joke about it.’ And about an equal number of people say
‘You got to spend the first four or five pieces of mail apologizing
explaining that you served your whatever it is
Spending time with Weiner is like living inside an episode of The Bear
The profanity and fervor are relentless—and seemingly inextricable from the talent
Even with more than a decade of political rust on him
it only took a few minutes to be reminded that tact is often just the first casualty of his convictions
which he believes has become a kind of emotional-support pet for every progressive interest
“Voters don’t expect you to have every answer and to agree with them on everything,” Weiner said
his face scrunched in exaggerated bewilderment
“Sometimes they actually kind of like it when you say
Fuck you.’ That's more of an acknowledgment that you’re actually listening to them than just saying ‘Yes
If confrontation is the deepest form of love
The less generous one is that he’s obsessive—he’s never met a boundary he respects or a consequence he fears
That his certainty and enthusiasm are tied up with a need to dominate
That he’s not merely tumescent; he needs you to see it
deep into his fourth decade in public life
has never been particularly good at disguising or explaining any of this
“I’m not sure where the snake is eating its tail—did I have a need that was being fed by my career
Did I go into that career because I was dealing with these inner demons and whatever?” He is the only subject where his conviction has consistently failed him
Weiner’s latest comeback began at a countertop company in the Brooklyn Navy Yard
a friend who owned the place and believed in employing the formerly incarcerated installed Weiner as its CEO
After the company became an employee-owned co-op
Weiner moved on to consulting before landing a regular gig as the left-wing foil on WABC
a conservative talk-radio station that doubles as a rescue shelter for New York’s unloved political animals
this was more than he had a right to hope for
and the hours allowed him to “make life as easy as possible for Huma”—Abedin
famously an adviser to Hillary Clinton—and to be around for their then-9-year-old son
Weiner frames this period as “a decision to live a smaller life,” before adding
I am open to the idea that I don’t want the last chapter to be ‘He served time in prison
I’m open to the idea that I didn’t like that last chapter.”
Jordan reached the beginning of what parenting experts call the launching stage
and what Weiner jokingly calls a child’s “just doesn’t give a shit about having me around anymore” phase
a term-limited seat in our shared city-council district opened
decided that “there’s not a Muhammad Ali in this fucking race,” and called Huma
“My first response was wanting reassurance that there was minimal impact on Jordan,” Abedin told me
“And I also know that was the reason why I was the first person he asked
I’ve never doubted that Anthony was and is a very gifted and charismatic politician
Very few people who are familiar with his work disagree or dispute that
‘I hope you can find joy and purpose in doing this.’ That’s basically it
‘You should constantly be thinking about what your motives are.’ Like
Anthony Weiner has a sponsor because Anthony Weiner is a sex addict
He doesn’t quite squirm while talking about it
but it’s the rare subject that causes him to slow down
to consider his words rather than spit them out like spent shell casings
“Let me just start by saying I’m not trying to persuade you or anyone else who wants to argue about whether sex addiction’s a thing or not.” Pause
“But the easiest way to look at it.” Pause
“If you define addiction in the clinical way of doing something that
when you need more of that thing despite having more and more consequences for not being able to stop.”
For the record, the DSM-5 (the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, published by the American Psychiatric Association) does not include sex addiction as a formal diagnosis. The World Health Organization’s International Classification of Diseases does
but calls it compulsive sexual behavior disorder
“I was a person who had this exaggerated belief in my own ability and worked really hard
So even though I lost my brother to addiction”—his older brother
struggled with drugs and alcohol and was inebriated when hit by a car as he crossed a Virginia highway on foot in 2000—“I never quite internalized it as a thing
rock bottom is what forced him to reconsider
and possibly the election of the first female president
Weiner could not understand how it had all happened
I knew that I was doing it an enormous amount
When people say ‘What were you thinking?,’ I could not answer.”
Peter Fisher for The Atlantic“I’m not a victim of some larger conspiracy,” he said
“It’s just a thing that I did that I’ve accepted responsibility for.” He credits the rituals of recovery—the naming of his condition; 12 steps; group meetings
which he says he still attends—for providing a ladder up: “It brought me relief
Read: Democrats have a problem
It’s impossible to know if Weiner has really become more decipherable to himself
He says all the things a sincere person would say about addiction—which are also the things a clever insincere person would say
We live in an era when every scoundrel has a pathology
It’s hard to imagine a person less suited to the Serenity Prayer
He at least seems to have arrived at an understanding that the forces inside him can not be dissociated
I asked if politics and sexting were intertwined compulsions
if chasing votes would lead to the world waking up to another shot of his junk on social media
But there’s still vintage material out there from the Carlos Danger era
“Part of the risk of all this is that people are like
Weiner listened to his sponsor and asked himself if he was chasing fame (“no”)
or action (“I did have the sense I ain’t doing enough”)
Jordan and Abedin are thriving and will not be at risk of financial ruin should he implode
(Weiner and Abedin separated in 2016 and officially divorced in early 2025; Abedin is now engaged to George Soros’s son Alex.) “I mean
and that ability translates into a better city and a better neighborhood for my son
And then the answer is usually some version of: People are gonna say mean things to you
but that didn’t seem like all that good a reason
To appear on New York City’s primary ballot
candidates for city council need 450 people to sign a petition supporting their candidacy
The Weiner campaign has no headquarters and one full-time staffer
I had fight-or-flight at every door,” Weiner told me
“It’s not like I’ve got a strategic view of how to deal with the scandal
I’m trying to deal with these things with honesty
and started yelling—and by now it should not surprise you that he yelled back
Some gently teased him or showed him grace
or Eliot Spitzer (“Wrong Jew,” Weiner told me)
This tracks with my own experience of being in public with Weiner
you must be a glutton for punishment,’’’ he said
“Or someone will say ‘I believe in second chances,’ or ‘I voted for you before; I’ll vote for you again,’ that kind of thing
But I always include in my calculus that people will say nice things and generally keep nasty things to themselves
especially when you’re out there face-to-face.”
Weirdly, the biggest obstacle to Weiner’s comeback may be not his past, but his politics. He’s lived in District 2 since 2011, but it’s far from the mostly white, middle-class parts of Queens and Brooklyn he represented as a congressman. Every District 2 council member since the early 1990s has been Hispanic. Just 8 percent of the district’s 175,000 residents are registered Republicans
Fresh Defund the Police graffiti appears regularly
Weiner’s a centrist Democrat—he thinks the neighborhood needs more cops and fewer pot shops
“If this election is about the most anti-Trump
you’re not going to pick a Cuomo or a Weiner,” he said
but there seems to be a disconnect with the brand that New York Democrats are selling and what people want to buy right now.” I asked what evidence he had to support this
“I’m in New York with a head on my shoulders seeing what’s going on on 14th Street.”
The minimalist composer Philip Glass is a longtime District 2 resident
I mention this because the Weiner campaign is basically just two loud hunches
in a way that may or may not cohere into a melody
The first hunch is focusing the campaign relentlessly on quality-of-life issues
with moderate to conservative positions on subway-fare evasion (stop it)
and the recent proliferation of missile-like E-bikes in bike lanes (stop it)
Technocratic intolerance for disorder was last a thing in New York City during the Bloomberg administration
usually we associate firebrands with an extreme kind of thing,” Weiner said
I watched some game tape of Weiner at candidate forums and interest-group Zooms from the past few months
The truth is that these events can be both a bore and a circus
Sometimes Weiner was the clown—“I will take questions on anything
as you do watching anyone be excellent at something
When a Service Employees International Union (SEIU) group that represents medical residents and interns told him that its top priority is more housing close to hospitals
“Am I going to do that for the firefighters also
Am I going to do that for the guys who work in the sanitation department
You tell me how you expect this to work.” He did not sound like the unreasonable one
he took a simple question about a local homeless man and
lit into the progressive orthodoxy on homelessness—which prioritizes an unhoused person’s right to stay on the street over getting troubled people necessary care and preserving public spaces
Most politicians know how to live on the surface in these moments
But Weiner uses conflict to make small things feel more urgent
to make local democracy into something worthy of passion
but he challenges Democrats to hear the jagged melody blaring through his septum: Do we want to be polite
Weiner has few ways to know if any of this is working
He and his rivals are on the verge of reaching the council fundraising cap
The New York Times appears to find him too prurient to cover
while the New York Post sticks to dick jokes and contempt
When he entered the race, a rival candidate proposed the Withholding Eligibility in NYC Elections for Restricted Individuals Act, or WEINER Act
to ban registered sex offenders from seeking office
his opponents seemed to have settled on a series of shared facial expressions that convey patience and pity
They patronized even as he schooled them on the fundamentals
like standing when you answer a voter’s question and underlining your policy differences from the rest of the field
Read: What the Democratic infighting reveals
Weiner seems most desperate to hear from the old-guard New York Democrats who once embraced him as the future
He hasn’t spoken with Cuomo or Chuck Schumer—his political mentor
the man whose congressional seat he inherited—in years
He has thoughts about how they should talk to voters
(When Schumer blinked in his March staredown with Trump and funded the government with a continuing resolution
Just say ‘They want to close down the government because if they do
they’re never gonna reopen it.’ English!”) He says he wants to be useful
but in the meantime he’s happy to use them as a foil
“I do lean into the idea that there’s not much they can do to me
I’m not running with their institutional support
I’m going to be the tallest pygmy in the city council.”
and he reached for an “I’m not that guy anymore” story
talk to some voters.’ There’s no one there!” He laughed
“I’m not running around every moment of the day like I have to be maximizing my voter contact
that’s very different than it was when I did this in Brooklyn in 1991

the Golden State Warriors set up a matchup against the Minnesota Timberwolves in the conference semifinals
It's a matchup that Timberwolves star forward Anthony Edwards has wanted for a long time
Edwards was asked what he was looking forward to in the 2023-24 season
he wanted to face the Warriors in a playoff matchup
"Definitely going back to the playoffs," Edwards said at the time
"And going further in the playoffs—I want to play the Warriors

"Because Draymond [Green] talks so much trash
That's pretty much the only reason."

In the latest edition of "Colts Qs," readers wanted to know all about the quarterback competition between Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones
and what our expectations for the Colts' 2025 season should be
"If the Colts had the 4th pick instead of the 14th
would have they selected Tyler Warren anyways?" -- @ccaarrlooss
TwitterI doubt the Colts had many players ranked above Warren at all
Will Campbell or Armand Membou would've made a lot of sense for them if they picked fourth
I think they may have tried to trade back from the fourth pick to still try and grab Warren
"Do we really believe this is a make-it-or-break-it year for Chris Ballard
I wonder what they have to do for him to keep his job
I believe this team's ceiling is just making the playoffs." -- @dweath42.bsky.social
Bluesky"Do you see a future at the end of this next season Ballard gets fired but Shane Steichen keeps his job and gets to help pick the next GM?" -- @blake14jeffers
Twitter"Where do you think the Colts finish in the AFC South this year
Twitter"What are the expectations for the season?" -- @chabar84
TwitterI don't want to say that the Colts have to outright make the playoffs in order for Ballard to keep his job
because crazy things happen at the end of the season all the time
they need to be playing for a spot in Week 18
and vibes around the team have to be optimistic that the arrow is pointing up
They can't have any more of these no-show games where they get blown out by bad teams
while Steichen is retained after the season
I've been under the impression that Ballard and Steichen are kind of a package deal
but this organization can do some pretty unpredictable things
I think player and consultant input would have to play a big role in order for the Colts to part with one but not the other. The division got better this offseason
but the Colts need to be competing for its title regardless
but they just keep finding a way to make it work
The Jaguars get a healthy Trevor Lawrence back
the Colts should be around that 9-8 mark and competing for the division crown in the final week of the season
"Who are some potential in-house off-season extensions?" -- @chicagolp.bsky.social
Bluesky"Do you think we see Bernhard Raimann and/or Alec Pierce extensions before the season starts?" -- @Steve17bScuba
Twitter"When will Raimann and/or Pierce lock in new contracts
and what do you think those projected extensions will look like?" -- @hovaldt_trevor
TwitterRaimann and Nick Cross are the most likely extensions
but if AD Mitchell begins to look like the guy they hoped he'd be
then there's only so much room for guys who need to get the ball
and Samson Enukam may already have their replacements on the roster. If I were the Colts
I wouldn't be waiting long to extend Raimann
There are 15 tackles in the NFL making at least $20 million per year
and that's only going to keep going up
The Colts may have his replacement already in Mitchell
and as a somewhat niche (albeit impactful) player
Pierce may not command a huge payday elsewhere
"Let’s say Anthony Richardson throws it 25 times a game
how do those targets get distributed?" -- @miralem1.bsky.social
only because I felt I needed room for about two-or-so more when projecting this
I'd say you give Josh Downs and Warren about seven each
and about five between Pierce and Mitchell
That doesn't leave any room for miscellaneous targets for guys like Mo Alie-Cox
but I think those are good general weekly averages
"If AR takes that step that he needs to
do you see us being able to compete for the division?" -- Hunter Reed
FacebookAbsolutely; quarterback is the ultimate X-factor for the Colts
If Richardson actually proves to be the guy
and a defense that looks to be about average at worst
"How much does AR’s completion percentage need to improve in order for him to keep his starting job?" -- @Isaac23178765
TwitterIt's unrealistic to say he's going to be a 60-plus guy right away
but if he can get it closer to 55% this year
A huge factor in his completion percentage is the routes he targets
checkdown options should increase his percentage
"Is there any part of you that fears Daniel Jones wins the QB job?" -- @JustinRTBColts
TwitterI wouldn't say "fears," but I do think it would be disappointing if Richardson couldn't show enough growth to retain the job
then it probably means the Colts will have an offense somewhat reminiscent of 2023 with Gardner Minshew
Jones likely wouldn't be showing that he's the future of the franchise
which means the Colts would have to figure out the quarterback position once again for the eighth straight year
"Would league-average QB play get the Colts to the playoffs with this roster
If yes…what percent chance would you give AR or DJ (or more likely the combination of the two) providing at least league-average QB play?" -- @SeafordFootDoc
TwitterI do think the Colts would be capable of getting into the postseason with somewhat steady quarterback play
I won't make some big proclamation that one of them will definitely take a big jump
but I'll give each the benefit of the doubt and say that they'll both at least be a little better than they were last year
Let's say 55% chance that at least one of them looks like a reasonable starter
is Tanor Bortolini being listed as a guard on the Colts website a real thing for this year?" -- Rich Wheeler
FacebookI wouldn't look too much into that
The Colts do feel Bortolini could play center or guard
but he should be considered the front-runner for the center position
There is a world where the Colts make Danny Pinter the center and Bortolini the right guard

"Since we have a couple young options for Swing Tackle
should Braden Smith be moved inside to Right Gaurd and develop Goncalves at Right Tackle?" -- Rick Shaffer
Facebook"Likely that Matt Goncalves plays RG?" -- @drphilgood68
TwitterSmith's going to stay put at right tackle
with it feeling likely that one of the younger players (Goncalves or Jalen Travis) takes over there in 2026
I believe the vision is that Bortolini and Pinter battle for center (with Bortolini winning)
Goncalves at right guard (dark horse battle between Bortolini and Dalton Tucker)
with Travis competing with Blake Freeland for the swing tackle role
"3rd-and-Goal from the 2 - can you see a scenario where Jalen Travis comes in as the eligible 6th lineman in a jumbo package for the ultimate play-action pass to the big man (a la Dan Skipper)
Did he ever catch a pass in high school or college?" -- BlueskyI couldn't find any record of Travis previously catching passes
as he was still an offensive lineman in high school
so he's likely athletic enough for the Colts to tinker with the idea of using him as a trick-play target
It seems like a lot to try that with a rookie so early in their career
"Do you believe Justin Walley will be the 3-4th corner in the depth chart due to his speed & attack at the catch?" -- @Sn8ke3y3s13
TwitterI see Walley as the fourth corner initially behind Charvarius Ward
and he was handpicked for this new defense
but it's difficult for me to envision the Colts ripping Jones from the lineup for a third-round rookie right off the bat
That's not to say Walley couldn't win the job later in the season
"If Germaine Pratt becomes a June 1 cut
would he be a #1 priority signing?" -- David Whiteley
FacebookI look at it this way: if Pratt previously had nothing to do with Lou Anarumo
would he be as big a topic of conversation
Coupling Pratt with Zaire Franklin is too much like having two of the same guy on the field for me
I'd rather see what Jaylon Carlies can do with an extended look as the starting WILL linebacker
"Do you think we should pursue Trey Hendrickson for a 2nd round pick?" -- @kodac120
TwitterIt feels less likely all the time that the Bengals even trade Hendrickson
let alone deal him specifically to the Colts
The Colts already have their eyes toward the future at defensive end with Laiatu Latu and JT Tuimoloau
Not that it would be a bad move for the Colts to trade for Hendrickson
but I no longer see the obvious path since the draft
and I don't know that the Colts are ready to handle that situation right now
"How excited are you about Riley Leonard being the franchise QB for this team?" -- @millerai
I don't mind the idea of Leonard being the Colts' backup for the foreseeable future
and the Colts have a ton of conviction in him as a person
"Will we finally break the Jacksonville curse this year?" -- @CheeZsteve
TwitterI can't pick the Colts to win on the road against Jacksonville until I actually see it happen
Was the price of getting to transition from Peyton Manning to Andrew Luck that they never get to win in Jacksonville again
"What are the plans for JuJu Brents - safety
TwitterI've never heard Brents mentioned as a potential safety
so I'm not sure that's in the cards for the Colts
I think he'll get the chance to compete for a spot in this cornerback room
but the desire to keep him around because of his second-round status may soon be gone with the addition of Walley
"Which sophomore player has more pressure on them to have success: Matt Goncalves or Jaylon Carlies?" -- @ZBee2306
He's on a bit more of an island than Goncalves since it'll primarily just be him and Franklin on the field at once
The Colts neglected to address the linebacker position with any impactful moves because they had Carlies already
but he would have to play quite poorly for it to be very noticeable
"Do you anticipate more opposing teams' fans filling up Lucas Oil Stadium again this year?" -- @LarryMooshaker
TwitterSome fan bases just travel better than others
but the Colts also have to give home fans a reason to show up
In covering the team from the press box at Lucas Oil Stadium since 2018
I've never seen so many opposing fans throughout the season or empty seats late in the year
the Colts hosted an odd number of elite-level fan bases last year (Bears
so it probably won't be as noticeable in 2025
"Will everyone apologize to Anthony Richardson or Chris Ballard after we win the Super Bowl this year?" -- @Justinsmic
"Who would win in a fight: Colts' 90-man roster or a gorilla?" -- @fili86.bsky.social
so I'll take one Grover Stewart versus one gorilla

Volpe remained in Saturday's loss against the Tampa Bay Rays after appearing to injure his shoulder on a fielding attempt in the eighth inning
Volpe later told reporters that he experienced a "pop," but that he had maintained his strength
"It happened quick and it was scary, but after that, I felt OK and I felt like I had my strength," Volpe said after the game
"I've never really had anything else pop or dislocate or anything like that

Investigators in Frisco, Texas have launched a probe after perpetrators allegedly doxed Collin County Judge Angela Tucker, who reduced the $1 million bond for 17-year-old Karmelo Anthony
He’s accused of fatally stabbing his peer, Austin Metcalf, at a track meet. According to Fox 4
the unidentified hackers have been publishing the judge’s personal address on social media following her decision to reduce the bond to $250,000
The Collin County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement that their “priority remains ensuring the judge’s safety and appropriate security measures have been implemented.” Former Dallas County assistant district attorney Russell Wilson said judges are especially at risk in high-profile cases such as the one involving Anthony and Metcalf as investigators continue to see an increase in the number of private information being leaked online
“Certain information is publicly available
But judges and individuals in law enforcement do have a statute that allows them to remove some of their information from being publicly available
And so publication of that information with the intent to cause harm or for them to get a threat is a crime in Texas,” Wilson said
The sheriff’s office added that it’s “coordinating with the FBI and our Fusion Center to monitor for any concerning rhetoric or propaganda that could incite violence.”

New York Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe
Volpe, who turned 24 last week, has been a durable presence for the Yankees, starting all 33 games this season before Sunday's absence. In his third MLB season
he's batting .233 with five home runs
His return comes at a crucial time for the Yankees, who are already dealing with injuries to key infielders Jazz Chisholm Jr. and DJ LeMahieu.

For only the second time since winning the 2022 NBA championship, the Warriors have advanced to the Western Conference semifinals
While many teams would crave that sort of “dry spell,” for the Warriors in the Stephen Curry era
That’s because the Warriors as currently constructed are Curry’s best — and maybe last — chance of at least reaching the conference finals
It’s all due to the addition of Jimmy Butler
who was as advertised in the first-round victory over the Rockets
especially after he returned from a one-game absence due to injury
are trying to establish themselves as a perennial West powerhouse
They took such a step last season by reaching the conference finals
and now look to make a return trip after an impressive first-round romp against the Lakers
Both of these teams arrived the hard way; the Warriors survived the SoFi Play-In Tournament
while the Wolves needed a late-season surge to avoid the Play-In and snatch the No
and this series has a chance of going the seven-game limit because of that
LeBron James and Luka Dončić from the postseason
Edwards appears to be on a star hunt as he makes his case for being the face of the NBA
He’s at the right age and the right stage of his career for a major takeover
Give him this: He’s not scared of the moment or the stage or the chance to be a folk hero
Edwards has the shine of other solo stars of the past — 2011 Dirk Nowitzki comes to mind
There’s a lot more road to travel from here
and Steph won’t surrender easily — if at all
The potential drama between Draymond and Rudy
The NBA evidently is being lenient about physical play
as we’ve seen through much of the first round of these playoffs
Now comes the real test — how much it looks the other way with Draymond and Rudy Gobert
they’re not on each other’s Christmas card list
There’s a history here; the most infamous moment was when Draymond grabbed Gobert two Novembers ago and put him in a headlock
That earned Draymond a five-game suspension and possibly cost him a chance to be placed on 2024 Team USA roster as well
there’s no stated reason why they dislike each other
The theory is Draymond is jealous over Gobert’s four Kia Defensive Player of the Year awards; Draymond
has mocked the number of Gobert’s awards in the past
Here’s something else these two defensive aces have in common — they’re usually invisible on the offensive end
aside from Gobert’s massive Game 5 in the first round
For the Warriors: The intriguing benching of Jonathan Kuminga will either come to a halt
He played only three games in the first round because coach Steve Kerr became exasperated and went with the three-guard approach of Curry
Buddy Hield and Brandin Podziemski instead
the Warriors might need Kuminga’s length and athleticism because the Wolves have that going for them
For the Timberwolves: Can Julius Randle keep this up
All the ghosts of past postseasons have perhaps been exorcised by Randle
who either was too injured to play or struggled when he did with the Knicks
He averaged 22.6 points on 48% shooting with decent defense against the Lakers
even if one impressive round doesn’t scream total redemption
In order to satisfy those skeptics and even his new teammates
Randle needs some carryover against the Warriors
It could help him land a rich contract extension this summer
Wolves' supporting cast delivers to close out Lakers in Game 5
Naz Reid shot 6-for-6 on fourth-quarter 3s over the five games
but all other Wolves shot just 10-for-41 from beyond the arc over those 60 minutes
the offensive numbers were strong and the defense was incredible
to just 81 points per 100 possessions in the fourth period
The Wolves were also at their best (plus-9.2 per 100 possessions) in the fourth quarter in the regular season
but lost fourth-quarter leads in two of their three losses to the Warriors
who were the sixth best fourth-quarter team (plus-17.0 per 100) in the first round
there’s a formula that often rings true: The team with the best player wins
even when he’s sharing the floor with Curry
There’s also another trend: The hottest team wins
Both teams beat higher seeds to arrive here
they look amped enough to return to the conference finals

What's the biggest question this draft created for you
Who was your favorite draft pick this year
I predicted Matthew Golden
Picking anyone else would be like getting what you asked for on Christmas morning and saying
We've all talked about the potential in the WR room for a couple of years
Did Brian Gutekunst just tell the receivers it is time for potential to become actual production with this draft
but I see a deep room getting deeper and that should only push the returning wideouts that much harder
or did Gutey actually go a whole draft without making any trades
It's not feasible to have 12 or 13 draft picks each year unless you're moving back those first two days
I saw a video where the guy says Anthony Belton would make a good tackle
but an excellent guard because of his run-blocking
Is there such a thing as being too big to be a guard
That doesn't really seem to be a thing anymore
360) to guard and assembled one of the biggest offensive lines the NFL has ever seen in front of a 6-1 quarterback
It just depends on the player and the scheme
What's encouraging about Belton is he has the footwork and size to live on the edge
but those traits could translate to clogging up the interior
Anthony Belton is a big man with massive upside
how much stock does the team put into who stands out the most
There's opportunity for rookies and returning practice-squad players to stand out
but rookie minicamp is like passing out books and the curriculum
The goal is for rookies to get up to speed and contribute in a productive way once the veterans are back into town
I know we have a long way to go, but on paper how exciting does this offense look? Not including Christian Watson coming back hopefully towards the business end of the season! If Jordan Love is healthy
I am hoping for exciting things from the defense as well
we just seemed to focus more on the offense in the draft
I don't want to rush the fall season only having 18 holes of golf in thus far...but it's tempting
The Packers already had a bevy of receiving options and now add two more wideouts with enticing skill sets
Who's to say what form this offense will take in 2025
Take a closer look at some of the college highlights of the 2025 draft class of the Green Bay Packers
Hey guys, the Barryn Sorrell pick intrigues me
His measurables compare to other players who were all drafted in the first and second rounds in previous drafts
are normally drafted very high and coveted by teams
Did the Packers just smash on a super-high value guy who may have fallen through the cracks
I don't know why Sorrell was available in the back end of the fourth round
I'm just happy he was there because Sorrell has everything you look for in an NFL edge rusher (as Spoff outlined well on Wednesday)
Sorrell didn't have the sack numbers that pundits salivate over
but he does the little things well and has burgeoning pass-rush skills
Jack Sawyer and Bradyn Swinson all lasted longer than I thought they would going into the draft
Is Isaiah Simmons Eric Wilson 2.0
Looks like he has a history of similar utilization and talents
There's an opening as a core-four special-teamer
faster and rangier than Wilson as a linebacker
Give credit to Wilson for the NFL career he's carved out as a former college free agent
but Simmons was the eighth overall pick in 2020
he's one of those top 1% guys to which I was referring earlier this week
I am thrilled about the signing of Simmons
Simmons can play a multitude of roles on the defense
I know he can immediately play on special teams
but where would you predict he will fit in on our defense
That's a question for Jeff Hafley whenever we next speak with him
Simmons didn't see a ton of defensive playing time in New York but made an impact on special teams for the Giants the past two years
It's just been a matter of finding out how to best utilize those tools
Follow packers.com's coverage of the 2025 NFL Draft
Greetings Gents! I was wondering if Xavier McKinney might have suggested Isaiah Simmons to the decision-makers
or maybe they sought input from him on Simmons
but certainly Gutekunst and the scouting staff are aware of past player connections
Think of the picks Packers could get for them
teams can only receive a maximum of four compensatory picks
rather perplexed as to any comments as to Gute utterly breaking the existing Pack draft model: Big rather than mobile
swift/shifty as opposed to big edge rushers
Gute has adapted and needs a HUGE shoutout from Pack Nation
I think this year will be very entertaining and likely productive on the betting scale given my Nevada proximity
Does Gute have a love affair with Georgia football players
The Bulldogs have had great success recently but come on now
How many Georgia players on the roster right now
I don't know if Gutey's background is German
but I do know that his last name translates in English to "Good work(s) of art." And I do think everyone will agree that Gutey and his staff created a good work of art in the "Big 8" from this year's draft
how about a few words from the Pack's side about the first undrafted free-agent signings: Nazir Stackhouse and Jamon Dumas-Johnson
We have a full offseason to chat about rookies and college free agents
Let's wait till they sign their contracts and get on the field
What has been the evaluation of the draft in Green Bay from the people responsible for evaluating it at the NFL
I haven't heard anything from the NFL perspective
The NFL seems elated about how the Green Bay draft went based on a few informal and off-the-record conversations I've had with league folks
The event was obviously well attended live but also easily navigable for the NFL and its employees
There was ample space to bring staging in and out
I went into the draft thinking this might be a once-in-a-lifetime event but maybe
I'll cover another one in Green Bay before my time at packers.com is over
You mentioned the Packers could still sign a veteran cornerback
What are your thoughts on them possibly bringing back Rasul Douglas
I don't know but I am stunned Douglas is still on the market
Just saw the pictures from the draft event on our website. Looks like it has been awesome! I was wondering what the world map with those shiny buttons was all about
Did it represent where each of the selected draft picks is originated from
with patrons putting pins in the part of the world they came from
I obviously did my part and represented the 'Mico
Which team surprised you the most in the draft
Atlanta trading a future first-round pick to move back into the first round and take James Pearce Jr
just curious in your perspective if the Bears have done "more" for Caleb Williams relatively speaking than the Pack did for Aaron Rodgers in terms of surrounding him with the tools needed for success be it draft or FA
It's probably apples to oranges to some extent based on the craft of the craftsman plying the tools
And if defense wins championships then maybe offense was never a problem
I know the fourth-best member of the Shield was getting all hyped about Williams and the Bears at the draft
but Chicago still won five games last year
The Packers did plenty for Rodgers and vice versa
leading to a legendary 15-year run together
Only one team can win it all at the end of the day
Green Bay has done four times to Chicago's one in the Super Bowl era
How tempted do you think Gute was to take the Falcons' offer to move down 23 spots
but pick up a first-round draft pick in 2026
What did you think about the trade the Falcons and Rams executed
I'd say the Falcons think they're a lot closer to Super Bowl contention than I think they are
The Green Bay Packers started their 2025 offseason workout program on Monday
What are your thoughts regarding the recent debate setting the social media world ablaze
Do you think 100 men equipped solely with their bare hands could take out a fully grown silverback gorilla
The gorilla would most likely get a handful of us
but the sheer mass of humans would overpower the strongest gorilla
Wild hypothetical, Kyle. I prefer to keep it more realistic: Could 11 Wes Hodkiewicz-sized Wes Hodkiewiczs stop one Josh Jacobs on a football field
but knew it wasn't relevant with the draft questions
I loved the use of the word "donnybrook" last week
I first heard the word in John Wayne's "The Quiet Man" and looked it up
Great fun to see the origin surrounding a raucous affair
And here I thought it was just some random phrase Jim Ross once used during "Monday Night Raw."
As a shareholder of the Packers and a lifelong fan
what an outstanding experience it was to attend the NFL Draft in Green Bay with my two sons
the Packers organization and the NFL for the wonderful experience
I've heard many similar sentiments over the past few days

Curry and Edwards suited up as Olympic teammates with Team USA this past summer, winning a gold medal in Paris. Now, they're set to face off against each other in the NBA postseason

“I think the best part about the whole thing is the practices,” Edwards said. “We played five-on-five, scrimmaging against each other, and I think the best thing that I learned was from Steph.”
"... Steph just playing without the ball," he continued. "... I just be cutting, getting out the way and I get easy shots. I think I learned the most from Steph."

The family of Karmelo Anthony, the 17-year-old Texas high school student charged with first-degree murder in the fatal stabbing of fellow student Austin Metcalf during a track meet on April 2, has raised over $515,000 through a GiveSendGo crowdfunding campaign. The funds are intended to cover Anthony's legal defense and ensure the family's safety following threats and public scrutiny.
Jacob Wells, co-founder of GiveSendGo, stated that most funds are earmarked for Anthony's legal expenses. Additionally, a portion will be used for the family's relocation to a secure residence, rental costs, and enhanced security measures. The family has also updated the fundraiser's description to reflect these intentions, emphasizing that the funds will support "safe relocation," "basic living costs," "transportation," "counseling," and "other security measures."
The campaign's goal was recently increased to $600,000, and the funds will not be disbursed until this target is met. Despite public criticism regarding the family's living arrangements and expenditures, Wells noted that no donors have requested refunds after clarifying the fund's purpose.
Anthony was released from the Collin County Jail after his bond was reduced from $1 million to $250,000. His release conditions include house arrest, wearing an ankle monitor, and restrictions on social media use. The family has reported receiving death threats and experiencing harassment, prompting their relocation to an undisclosed location.
The case has drawn national attention, with both the Anthony and Metcalf families facing online harassment and misinformation. Authorities continue investigating the incident, and Anthony's legal proceedings are ongoing.
