Before the renovation and expansion of the Jones Library at 43 Amity St
the history of both the 1928 building and its 1990s addition are being recognized
Library Director Sharon Sharry recently told trustees for the library that three aspects of a memorandum of agreement with the Massachusetts Historical Commission will provide the public information about the building’s history
A so-called Matterport scan done by Finegold Alexander Architects that captures a three-dimensional view of the building as it exists in early 2025 will be posted on the library website
Sharry said the library is paying to host a link from its website to this scan
The second aspect is architecture and design photography being done by Stephen A
Miller is taking what Sharry said are high-quality pictures of all areas of the building
the library has a contract with Ginny Adams
the former senior architectural historian at the Public Archaeology Laboratory in Pawtucket
who will be writing a detailed history of the library building
With Bruno’s Pizza closing after 40 years in business late last year
building will become an entirely residential space
The Local Historical District Commission recently approved changes that will include replacing the front door for customers with a window
and altering the position of other windows
The commission OK’d an issuing of a certificate of appropriateness to Roula Anamisis
who requested the changes for the building
which is part of the Emily Dickinson Local Historic District
with residential rental units in other parts of the building
the building housed Whole Wheat Pizza Factory
and a pizza shop had been at the location since at least the late 1960s
Commission member Bruce Coldham suggested that Anamisis might preserve the exterior signs in some fashion to reflect the site’s business use for more than 50 years

Philippe Brosset (left) and son Garett | Emma Berry
the team who will be busy from the first lot on Friday to their final lot
there's a handful of smaller operations like that of Philippe Brosset and Ciara O'Connor
for whom countless hours of hard work will be distilled into one evening on Sunday when their only two lots
The hard work continued on the Arqana sales grounds on Wednesday morning as the two fillies in question
by Hello Youmzain (Fr) and Kingman (GB)
were paraded endlessly for potential buyers
all under the watchful eye of Brosset and 15-year-old Garett
the youngest son he shares with wife O'Connor
Within a few minutes in their company it's clear that this a family-run operation to its very core
but what's not clear is why they settled on the name Applewood Stud
a very English-sounding title for their base located around 45 minutes outside of Deauville
“Ciara and I met in America,” begins Brosset's explanation
I worked for Coolmore in America for five years
At the time I was assistant manager on the main farm and then they gave me the responsibility of a little annex which was called Applewood Farm
It was very good experience for me and the people there have been very good to me
'Not farm–let's call it Applewood Stud'
The name Brosset is already a well-respected one in this industry after his time as director of Haras du Mezeray
having taken over that position when Henri Bozo moved to Monceaux in 2003
“Then Mezeray was sold to Nurlan Bizakov so I had to find my own way,” Brosset continues when telling the story of how Applewood became what it is today
“I got support from some of the old clients from Mezeray
“We found Applewood in Vieux-Pont and we fell in love with the place when we went there
It was half set up already and this year we built a barn with 17 stalls and paddocks just for the yearlings
We have roughly 60 acres and the goal will be to have what I'd call a select nursery
so with their babies we'll have around 35-40 horses all-year round.”
One of those mares is the now-18-year-old Idle Tears (GB) (Selkirk)
a half-sister to the high-class sprinter and sire Dream Ahead
who delivered a notable result for the Applewood team in their first year of consigning when her filly by Soldier's Call (GB)–since named Wasabi (Fr)–was offered at the 2022 Arqana October Yearling Sale
“She is our lucky mare and we've had her for a long time,” Brosset says fondly of Idle Tears
which for us was a dream in our first year
but at three she won her first start over a mile and a half at Saint-Cloud
She's been placed since that and has a few Group entries in the fall.”
there is no mistaking Brosset's affection for Lot 288
the Hello Youmzain filly out of the Iffraaj (GB) mare Rose Et Or (Ire)
already the dam of the Listed-placed Sun Flare (GB) (Exceed And Excel {Aus})
“I love that filly,” Brosset beams
“She was bred by Noir Et Or Elevage which is Charles-Henri de Moussac
The funny thing about this mare is I know her grandmother and I know her mother–I know the whole family
She looks sharp and she looks strong–she looks precocious and speedy.”
“The second one belongs to Gestut Wittekindshof,” he adds of Lot 301
who is out of a half-sister to the G1 Preis der Diana scorer Serienholde (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB})
herself dam of the G1 NHK Mile Cup winner Schnell Meister (Ger) by the same sire as this filly
" class="horse-link" target="_blank">Kingman
who you can't fault this year–he's a flying machine.”
Whatever that hour on Sunday brings for Brosset
don't expect them to be challenging the likes of Capucines and Cadran with bumper consignments at Arqana in the years to come
This is an operation with many other strings to its bow
not to mention a young man who seems to have inherited his parents' work ethic if the way Garett runs the show in his father's brief absence is anything to go by
but that wouldn't be our main purpose,” Brosset sums up
“I would be happy to consign only the homebred horses
We've got lots of support from the English and Irish people
who might ask us to consign a horse for them
and this year we have the Kingman filly for German breeders
They send their mares during the season to us and they're happy with us–and we're happy with them
“That's the way we'd like it to go–we don't want to do a big consignment
I went through that and now the goal is to develop a family place
We'd like to keep it small and selective.”

In the week following Hurricane Helene’s destruction in Western North Carolina
a Dallas veterinary hospital began working to send pet supplies and other donations to the impacted areas
Caitlin Rubow and other staff members at Applewood Animal Hospital collected several loads of supplies
according to Applewood employee Renee Beasley
people were mostly thinking of the immediate danger posed to families in WNC
they started to realize that the people who have lost everything may have been able to save their pets
Rubow said she believes that for those who did not lose them
holding onto their pets might be giving them a little hope
Rubow said herself and other staff at Applewood
like many other businesses in Gaston County
Rubow started by taking multiple loads of supplies to the Lincolnton airport where they were put on planes for distribution to the heavily impacted areas
While searching online for opportunities to connect with other veterinarians in the affected areas
Rubow said she came across a post created by a veterinarian in Louisiana who was looking for someone in the Gaston area to take animal supplies and deliver them to WNC
While Applewood never limited people to only donating animal supplies
Rubow said they began to focus on those donations around the same time
so she reached out and offered to take the items
she and her parents loaded a truck and trailer with the items and drove them to the Western North Carolina Regional Livestock Center
The family waited in line for hours along with others dropping off supplies and some picking up what they needed
so many strangers … all came together," she said
Applewood staff recently drove their fourth load of supplies directly to a drop-off center in Asheville
where they learned that the needs are shifting toward accommodating cold weather
Applewood is shifting their focus to include items that will help keep people warm
They ask that people donate fencing supplies
and other items that can be used to heat homes or keep people warm ahead of colder weather
She added that it is hard to contact some of the veterinary clinics in the impacted areas to find out which ones are still able to operate
but the clinic is grateful for the community support allowing them to aid in relief efforts
“We’re still willing to collect … we’re not going to turn anyone away,” Beasley said
The holiday season looked a lot brighter for The Family Tree, as the most recent $5,000 Applewood Plumbing Heating & Electric Caring Community Giveaway recipient

Community votes resulted in the award to The Family Tree
There with Care and Denver Children’s Foundation also received $500 each
“Each of these organizations is doing wonderful work in our communities to improve the lives of others,” said Josh Ward
owner of Applewood Plumbing Heating & Electric
“That’s truly the spirit of the holiday season
and we’re proud to be a part of those efforts.”
The Family Tree’s “Holidays of Hope” program provides gift cards to their clients offering a means to shop and provide for their families with the same grace and dignity as those more fortunate
The experience can be transformative for a struggling family
“It is really exciting when local businesses
chief development officer at The Family Tree
“It makes such a difference to have this kind of support for the people who need it most.”
Ham noted that the $5,000 donation will be used to provide community services to address the interconnected issues of child abuse
The organization has been providing safety
domestic violence and homelessness are at the core of The Family Tree’s efforts to assist individuals in reaching safety
Community resources include crisis intervention

Caitlin Rubow knew from the time she was a child that she wanted to be a veterinarian
I truly was the kid that said always that I was going to be a veterinarian when I grew up," Rubow said
She has been working as a veterinarian since graduating from the University of Tennessee's veterinary school in 2019
She purchased Applewood Animal Hospital in Dallas
and she is now the proud owner of a clinic in her hometown
"Everybody keeps telling me that I'm going to be fine and everything's going to be fine."
Returning to Gaston County is a homecoming for Rubow
having a large animal vet come out to the house to do things for the horses," she said
one of our horses having to have surgery a couple times
My mom actually checked me out of school to come home so that I could watch and help with that."
Rubow recalls writing in an English paper in seventh grade that she wanted to be a veterinarian
spending time shadowing medical providers at a dentist's office
Her desire to become a veterinarian did not waver
I want to work with animals.' So I said it from day one
Rubow graduated from North Gaston High School in 2011 and went on to Lenoir-Rhyne University
majoring in biology with a minor in chemistry
She went on to veterinary school at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville
if I had to do it over I would choose UT all over again
because it was such a good experience," she said
Rubow graduated from veterinary school and started her career at a clinic in Sparta
a little over an hour northeast from Boone
because they were so close to the state line
I worked there for the whole first year out of vet school," she said
and she at times worked 100 hours in a week
"There were definitely times where I truly was putting in 100 hours a week between working
and then being on call and working all night," she said
large animal emergencies and small animal emergencies
she says she is grateful for the time she spent there
and they put me on call a whole weekend by myself
here I'm a terrified new grad on call by myself with one assistant to see emergencies," she said
"So I got a lot of experience and learned a lot of things very quickly."
Rubow began working at Archdale Animal Clinic
It is truly probably one of the best hospitals I've ever worked in
the whole culture of the hospital," Rubow said
When Applewood Animal Hospital was listed for sale
She wasn't sure she was ready to own her own veterinary practice
"I actually knew about Applewood being for sale for quite some time
So I knew about it well before I ever left Archdale
I just kept telling my family and myself and everybody here that there's no way I could buy that hospital
am I supposed to leave this job in Archdale where I love the people and I truly am happy
She was visiting her parents when she decided to drop by Applewood with her mother
She had grown up taking family pets to the clinic
He asked her if she had thought about buying an animal hospital
I just don't know if I can do it.' And he said
"I don't think corporate would necessarily be the best
and then that's when panic kind of set in."
"And I guess the good Lord told me that this is what I'm supposed to do
talking to lawyers when she wasn't available and helping her jump through the legal hoops necessary to complete the sale
"Both my mom and dad have just gone above and beyond to help me in any way possible
looking at these applications and answering questions to making phone calls," she said
"Because … I've been trying to work throughout this whole process
so I haven't always been available to just
… be able to sit at my email or pick up the phone and make these phone calls
if it weren't for this opportunity to move back to my hometown
"I would keep driving back and forth when I could
because I was truly otherwise happy at Archdale
But I do feel like this is the next step in my career."
She hopes to eventually expand the practice at Applewood
but my goal would be to be able to grow the practice and to eventually hire another associate
having to … physically expand on the practice itself," she said
The staff at Applewood will otherwise stay the same
and Dutterer gave her a job in the weeks before she closes on the practice
introducing her to the people and pets that the clinic serves
… Am I really about to buy at that hospital?" she said
She said her ultimate intention is to keep the doors open at Applewood
which has served the Dallas community since the late 1980s
I did not go into this profession for the money
and I did not move back home to buy this practice to become rich," she said
"I truly wanted to come back home and be able to keep the doors open at Applewood
to continue to provide care … for the people in the community."
A rendering of Prost Brewing’s planned Wheat Ridge biergarten
The western suburbs are getting a trifecta of restaurants
Chef Troy Guard’s breakfast spot HashTAG is expected to open within the next year in the Clear Creek Crossing development in Wheat Ridge
along with a Prost Brewing biergarten and a new concept by The Radiator Café and Bar founder Ciaran O’Brien
That’s according to Denver-based Evergreen Devco
which is developing the project by the Interstate 70-Highway 58 interchange
I think we’re starving for this out in Applewood,” O’Brien said
referring to the neighborhood to the south
who also owns The Patio at Sloan’s in Sunnyside
said his spot — dubbed Agora at Applewood — will be a revamp of a food hall
It will feature six separate dining experiences within the 10,000-square-foot building
including an Irish pub with a golf simulator
an Italian market featuring a deli and pizza and a higher-end cocktail bar with small plates
along with a rooftop bar and a place that serves ice cream and juice
O’Brien’s restaurant and real estate group
“It’s a communal space where you can walk from one concept to another with your drink,” O’Brien said
There’s not a main bar you order from like your traditional food hall would be
Renderings of the Agora at Applewood building
Guard’s HashTAG will be the chef’s fourth brunch spot. The third is slated to open downtown next month
And Prost’s brewpub will be the fifth location for Colorado’s third-largest brewery
Clear Creek Crossing is already home to two apartment buildings, a Life Time gym, a Hampton Inn and Intermountain Health Lutheran Hospital, which all opened last year. Bonfire Burritos
a preschool and another hotel are set to open at Clear Creek in the coming year as well
a senior development manager for Evergreen
said there will be green space in the middle of the three buildings that HashTAG
senior vice president of leasing for Evergreen
said the area will operate under a communal dining license
which allows patrons to enjoy food and drink purchased from inside the restaurants within the shared outdoor dining area
The buildings will form a horseshoe shape and have a scenic view of the nearby pond and the mountains
big fire pits and it’ll be open container,” Boyd Hoback
we think we can capture a lot of the mountain traffic
While Prost and O’Brien are buying their buildings
Lis said there’s another unit next to HashTAG that Evergreen will likely lease to another restaurant operator
Hoback said Prost will pay between $5 million and 6 million to build out its 6,800-square-foot space
It will have 40 beers on tap and serve fare including pretzels
Prost, founded in 2012, opened a 60,000-square-foot production facility in Northglenn last year
where it will still make most of its German lagers
Hoback said the new Wheat Ridge spot will have a small brewing system on display
but it will be used for home brewing classes
The beermaker also has a biergarten in Northglenn along with Highlands Ranch and Denver’s LoHi

Applewood Plumbing Heating & Electric will welcome the fall season with its September Furnace Checks for Charity to benefit Colorado Pet Pantry
Colorado summer will soon begin to fade and it will welcome in the cool fall and winter months
As homeowners begin to winterproof their belongings and prepare themselves for the next season
they should not forget to also bundle up their home to ensure it is prepared for the temperature changes to come
Applewood’s Furnace Checks for Charity will support Colorado Pet Pantry
Applewood is providing all customers a reduced furnace check price of $99 for its 14-point check system that will benefit a local charity
The customer pays $99 for the service and funds go directly to Colorado Pet Pantry to support its food and care programs for pets across Colorado
“For about six months your furnace sits and waits until its cold enough for you to use it again
but during those off months and maintenance needs can arise causing your furnace no longer work properly or safely,” said Josh Ward
“You can really increase your performance and longevity with regular maintenance and with this program customers can help a charity at the same time.”
Colorado Pet Pantry is a nonprofit organization based in Colorado working to keep pets in their homes by providing support to their families
With its mission to reduce pets in shelters and on the streets
it temporarily feeds pets so their owners can maintain care and stability
the Pet Pantry volunteers fed 9 million meals to about 150,000 pets
“A donation of $99 will allow our pet food bank to feed 20 dogs and cats for 30 days,” said Eileen Lambert
“This donation for a furnace check — a price that hasn’t increased in several years — will greatly help us to assist new people and pets in need throughout the state.”
Applewood has chosen to partner with Colorado Pet Pantry as many customers have pets their technicians encounter every day
Applewood’s annual Furnace Checks for Charity program has raised more than $30,000 for local nonprofits and helped ensure customers’ homes remain safe and ready for the cooler months

it’s long been known that winning a Michelin star — once considered the ultimate accolade — can also be the kiss of death for a restaurant
and the poaching of workers and suppliers hiking up costs are the dark side of the prestigious spotlight
A recently released study by University College London (UCL) has borne out the assumption
after tracking the success or failure of hundreds of highly rated New York City restaurants between 2000 and 2019
It found that 40% of the restaurants had closed by 2019
while only one out of every five highly rated but non-Michelin restaurants had closed over the same time period
“While restaurateurs frequently reflected on a feeling of achievement after receiving a Michelin star and highlighted that this led to a heightened focus on their restaurant
the consequences of Michelin stars were not all necessarily favorable,” said author Daniel B

Michelin two-star winner Cyrus closed in Healdsburg in 2012 following a lease dispute
restaurateurs “at risk” of receiving a Michelin star should plan for the inevitable disruptions
“Not all the effects of Michelin stars are bad,” author Sands said
“Some (restaurants) perform fine and are successful post-Michelin star
sometimes these stressors are too much for a restaurant to withstand.”

An apple orchard in Greenville has expanded with a restaurant serving up cider and "new American flavors." I gotta say
Back in 2018 we told you that after 40+ years the owners of Klackle Orchards were retiring and the property had been put for auction. The land was split up and a portion of it was purchased by Greenville natives, April and Michael Peterson, who kept the orchard going under a new name: Frugthaven Farm

This is a part of Greenville and it's something that the whole town is passionate about and we just did not want to see it get lost in the shuffle of the Klackles retiring
Frugthaven grew to not only be a working apple orchard
In looking into the new restaurant, I did uncover something really sad. April Peterson passed away unexpectedly in 2023. From posts to Facebook

you may think of the state of Washington before you think of Tennessee
Apple Barn and Cider Mill is a flourishing apple orchard in the eastern Tennessee town of Sevierville
I visited recently and had Sunday dinner at the Applewood Farmhouse in Sevierville
A relative recommended that I visit the barn and cider mill while visiting Pigeon Forge
Kelly CarrollWalking up to the restaurant
I read a sign stating that the farmhouse is the oldest restaurant in Sevierville and won the 2023 Best of Pigeon Forge award for "Southern Cooking and Breakfast." My expectations continued to rise as I walked up to the restaurant's entrance and smelled the delicious food cooking
A hostess seated me towards the back of the restaurant
and I was positively thrilled to see a basket of warm apple fritters
and a cold Applewood julep on the table waiting for me
Kelly CarrollThe sweet
sugar-dusted fritters were crunchy on the outside and warm and soft on the inside
and the apple julep drink tasted sweet and refreshing
These surprise treats immediately confirmed that the restaurant takes its apples
either Grandma's vegetable or broccoli cheddar
I was hungry but knew this hearty farmhouse meal would go way beyond filling me up
Kelly CarrollI enjoyed a massive meal of vegetable soup, pot roast, fried okra, mashed potatoes, and apple cobbler. I could not finish every bite, but believe me, I tried. The food was fresh, wholesome, and delicious -- exactly what you'd hope would come from a farmhouse kitchen.
Kelly CarrollThe building, constructed as a farmhouse in the 1920s, was converted into a restaurant in 1986. The restaurant is family-friendly and offers a kid's menu.
Kelly CarrollThe waitstaff was attentive and helpful
The experience truly felt like being welcomed onto a family farm
the restaurant has a beautiful outdoor dining area
Kelly CarrollThere are several tables with bright red umbrellas
No one was dining outside while I was there
likely because it was a blistering hot day
