Print Arcadia City Councilmember Eileen Wang said her romantic relationship with her former fiance
Federal prosecutors allege that Sun worked with the Chinese government to cultivate Wang
in hopes that she would rise in politics and help promote pro-China policies
After being sworn in as second-in-command of the Arcadia City Council
Eileen Wang addressed a controversy that has taken a back seat in the months since the Eaton fire devastated nearby Altadena
“We broke up the fiance relationship,” Wang said of her former campaign manager
Wang said their romantic relationship ended last spring, eight months before federal prosecutors charged Sun with conspiracy and acting as an illegal agent of a foreign government
The April 15 statement from Wang, now mayor pro tem of the San Gabriel Valley city, was one of the few times she has publicly addressed the charges against Sun, who allegedly worked with China to cultivate Wang, in hopes that she would rise in politics and help promote pro-China policies, including opposition to Taiwan.
California
The relationship between Arcadia Councilmember Eileen Wang and Yaoning ‘Mike’ Sun deepens questions around what Wang knew about an alleged plot to push pro-China policies
Facing calls for her resignation
Wang had vowed in January not to step away from the council
emphasizing that she was “not responsible for the action of others.”
Wang did not respond to several calls and emails from The Times
The other four council members also did not respond to emails
“I have a lot of questions,” said former Councilmember Sheng Chang
who ran against Wang in 2022 and recalled being stunned by the fundraising prowess and plum endorsements of “the new kid on the block.”
Sheng Chang, who lost an Arcadia City Council race to Eileen Wang in 2022, at his office in San Gabriel. (Allen J. Schaben / Los Angeles Times) Arcadia City Manager Dominic Lazzaretto released a short statement soon after Sun was charged in December
saying Wang was cooperating with the FBI and that Sun “had no involvement whatsoever with City of Arcadia business or decision-making.”
and it’s unclear whether she was aware of the alleged scheme
prosecutors identified her only as “Individual 1.”
The complaint provides a rare glimpse into the covert influence the Chinese government allegedly seeks to have on politicians and organizations in the San Gabriel Valley
a landing spot for many Chinese and Taiwanese immigrants
Campaign records examined by The Times indicate that Sun served as Wang’s campaign manager
lending money and helping bring in donations — some of which came from sources with ties to the Chinese government
As the November 2022 election neared, iCity News published a slew of glowing articles on Wang, a political novice and owner of an after-school tutoring company.
While Arcadia and Temple City remained solidly blue
many voters expressed despair about crime and the economy as reasons to give Donald Trump another chance
You must vote for Eileen!” concluded an article
one of roughly half a dozen the outlet published that year on Wang
who would receive an endorsement from Su as well as the $500 donation
There were no stories on Chang, Wang’s opponent, a Taiwanese immigrant who ran a bare-bones campaign with $34,000 he lent himself
an office manager for EDI who said she was responding on Su’s behalf
wrote in an email that the $500 donation was made from Su’s personal funds because he believed Wang was a “good candidate.” The company has not had to register as a foreign agent since 2022
The L.A. arm of Sing Tao US, a subsidiary of a Chinese-owned newspaper that is registered as a foreign agent, also donated to Wang’s campaign, giving $3,300 on Aug. 9, 2022, according to campaign finance records
Wang paid the company the same amount for print ads
The Sing Tao Daily is one of the oldest newspapers in Hong Kong and has long been featured on newsstands in Chinatown and the San Gabriel Valley. Sing Tao US wrote in a government filing it is “editorially independent” from its Chinese parent company
said Wang’s campaign made an error on its campaign finance forms
Sing Tao never contributed to Wang’s campaign and only received payment from it for ads
[branch] never made any political contribution — unless you prove to me otherwise,” Mui said
The criminal complaint against Sun described extensive interactions between Sun and John Chen, who was sentenced to federal prison last year for acting as an illegal Chinese agent and plotting against Falun Gong
as “friendly to China.” Chen’s Chinese handler told him that he would be given funds to “socialize with” the former supervisor in the hopes of getting an introduction to M.A.’s successor
who oversaw a district including parts of the San Gabriel Valley from 1980 to 2016
said he first met Chen at a dinner for a Chinese association and would occasionally run into him at community events
He never felt Chen was pushing a political agenda
Antonovich said the only time he felt pressure from the Chinese government was before Double Ten Day
the Chinese consulate would reach out to each supervisor and ask them not to attend local celebrations
Antonovich said he didn’t heed the guidance and spoke at Double Ten celebrations twice
said she has never met with Chen or Sun and has no records of either man reaching out to her office
Much of the campaign Sun orchestrated for Wang would be considered standard fare for an up-and-coming San Gabriel Valley politician
Wang, a longtime resident of Arcadia, hired Santa Maria Group, a prominent lobbying firm. She nabbed plum endorsements from big-name politicians: L.A. County Supervisor Hilda Solis, U.S. Rep. Judy Chu (D-Monterey Park) and Chu’s husband, former state Assemblymember Michael Eng.
In total, Wang raised $119,000, mostly from donors with addresses in the San Gabriel Valley. Another top fundraiser, Councilmember Michael Cao, brought roughly $125,000 into his campaign that year.
Chang, who was seeking a third term on the City Council after winning a seat in 1994 and 2000, said that for the first time, his heritage became a talking point during an election, when a supporter asked him to remove her name from his list of endorsements because she had heard that he supported Taiwan independence.
Wang’s Instagram account from that time is full of videos of her on the campaign trail, set to zippy pop songs. She previously told The Times that she knocked on every door in her district multiple times to make sure she reached every resident.
“I walked about 140 days ... I never stopped,” she said over a dim sum lunch last November, before the criminal charges against Sun. “I walked my district five times.”

The combined venture will manage more than 3 GW of capacity across 16 states and is poised for additional organic and acquisition-driven growth
Though the Perch-Arcadia venture will operate as an independently managed business, Arcadia’s platform business will leverage the increased scale to support its Energy Procurement Advisory offering
which helps businesses structure energy procurements through a mix of behind-the-meter and front-of-meter generation
power purchase agreements and bundled or unbundled renewable energy credits in regulated and deregulated power markets
The move will “[expand] our procurement offering with access to the largest portfolio of community solar capacity in the country,” Kiran Bhatraju
The venture will match Arcadia’s technology advantage with Perch’s historical strength with commercial customers
the venture will serve “over 300,000 residential and commercial customer equivalents” and could target additional acquisitions in the future
Earlier this year, Perch announced an agreement with an Illinois-based fast food franchise operator to enroll 31 McDonald’s and Wendy’s locations in Perch’s community solar offering
reducing their electricity bills by an estimated 10% and potentially delivering as much as $1 million in savings over the agreement’s 20-year lifespan
But community solar has long been a flashpoint in the often-tense relationship between utilities and distributed energy advocates, with the former raising concerns about indirect costs for non-participating ratepayers and the latter accusing utilities of misrepresenting the issue
Total U.S. community solar capacity is expected to roughly double to about 14 GW (DC) from 2024 to 2029, Wood Mackenzie said in August
But as large community solar markets like California mature in the coming years
national market is set to contract by an average annual rate of 11% from 2026 to 2029

In traditional legend and literature, Arcadia names a pastoral place ruled by harmony. The ten songs on Alison Krauss & Union Station’s new album Arcadia—the first since their chart-topping Paper Airplane (2011)—evoke such a world even as they reveal the tragic truths that often dwell within it
Arcadia simply picks up the musical notes and threads out of which Alison Krauss & Union Station have long been weaving radiant and transportive patterns of sound
vocals) welcome guitarist and vocalist Russell Moore
best known as the front man of IIIrd Tyme Out
after the departure of long-time member Dan Tyminski
Swirling Dobro and gently down strums of the guitar open the album’s lead track
“Looks Like the End of the Road,” a tender meditation on beauty and the losses that often lie buried within it
the twirling blend of Krauss’ shimmering vocals and layers of glimmering instrumentation evoke the sounds that might accompany a dancer in a high-wire act in a small carnival
The chilling ballad “The Hangman” opens sparely with Moore’s vocals riding over acoustic guitar fingerpicking
creating a bleak portrait of the gallows and the hangman’s appointed business in the little town square
Moore’s sparkling and plaintive baritone vocals convey the desolation and sorrow
anger and regret in the Celtic-inflected “Granite Mills,” a traditional ballad about the 1874 Granite Mills fire in Falls River
The spaciously unfurling “One Ray of Shine” is a lilting ode to the welcome warmth of a ray of sunshine in the midst of an otherwise dark place
The swinging rhythms of “North Side Gal,” featuring Bales and Block on vocals with Krauss and Stuart Duncan on fiddles
fill the air with the sounds of a raucous barn dance
The album closes with the exquisite “There’s a Light Up Ahead,” an aching and tender ode to hope
with Krauss’ ethereal vocals rising high into the sonic stratosphere
Arcadia shimmers with an incandescent beauty
and every song on Alison Krauss & Union Station’s new album is a little slice of perfection

From The Fly II to Jet Li's 'The New Legend Of Shaolin'
Psychonauts turned 20 earlier this month. So, to celebrate, Double Fine Productions has been marking the occasion with a bunch of blogs and videos taking a look back on the legacy of the 3D platformer
The latest of these (and to our minds at least, the most interesting) is a 12-minute conversation with the Psychonauts writer/director Tim Schafer uploaded to YouTube yesterday
wherein the Double Fine founder digs deep into his own subconscious to tease out some of the major inspirations on the game from back when he was first working on the title
If you're familiar at all with the Psychonauts story or have read any interviews with Schafer in the past
you may have already heard of a few of these influences in the past
there are also a ton of other lesser-known influences that the video covers too — some of which took us slightly by surprise but make complete sense in context
For example, in the video, Schafer speaks in a little bit of detail about the impact that Sega's sky-pirate RPG Skies Of Arcadia had on the project
referencing how the team ended up lifting some mechanics from the title for its own game
like the idea of digging for underground collectibles:
"Skies of Arcadia was the one I played most recently before making Psychonauts
And there’s some actual mechanics that showed up in Psychonauts
There’s these little buried Chams that give off this vibration and sense
So they are under the ground and you have to dig them up
I think that’s obviously where the Psitanium came from in Psychonauts too
he also went over the effect the 1984 Dennis Quaid movie Dreamscape had on the relationship between Raz and his father
the impact of the Fly II on early versions of the setting
and how a child actor from the 1994 Jet Li classic The New Legend Of Shaolin inspired his approach to writing Raz
If you consider yourself a Psychonauts fan
and will no doubt have you coming away knowing a little bit more about the Xbox (and PS2) classic
Developer even sold his house to fund the game
Fixes issues with both the PAL and NTSC versions of the classic RPG
"I believe that a story or world cannot revolve around male power alone"

Servite’s boys 4x100 relay team burned up the track in 40 seconds flat
a state and meet record and the fastest prep time this season
Getting the Friars’ foursome off to a fast start was Jorden Wells
who passed the baton to Benjamin Harris around the first turn and watched as the Long Beach Poly transfer took the lead on the backstretch and handed off to Jaelen Hunter
who maintained his team’s margin before passing to Robert Gardner
All four of them are underclassmen and they beat runner-up Long Beach Poly by 32 hundredths of a second
Two sophomores. Two freshmen. pic.twitter.com/rHozt1LyZe
“We came in hot, having practiced real good and it paid off,” Gardner said. “Once I get the baton I have to do my part.”
“We can line up with any team out there,” he said. “We can go lower next week [at the Mt. SAC Relays] and beyond.”
Having won the 4x200 on Friday, Servite tried for the “trifecta” in the final race of the night Saturday and completed the sweep of the relays as Wells sprinted a 47.10 anchor leg to lead the all-freshman squad to first in the 4x400 in 3:12.33, the sixth-fastest time in the U.S. this season and the eighth-best all-time at Arcadia.
Hunter, the top ninth-grader in the country in the 400 meters, showed why by winning the seeded race in 47.91.
Jack Stadlman of Temecula Valley won the 400 in 45.92 at Arcadia. Noah Smith of Long Beach Poly, left, finished second in 46.56. (Craig Weston) Jack Stadlman of Temecula Valley won the Invitational 400 in 45.92, staying No. 3 in the nation at that distance. Despite his success, Stadlman said he prefers the 200.
“I’m not a fan of the 400, but I knew I had the fastest seed, I trusted in myself and finished the race,” said Stadlman, who trailed early before taking control to comfortably beat runner-up Noah Smith (46.56). “I wanted the meet record, but I told my coach I’d be satisfied with 45.”
Vista Murrieta’s Michael Norman set the meet record of 45.51 in 2016.
Stadlman, a former junior varsity basketball player, ran the fourth-fastest time in the United States (45.69) on March 1 in only his second 400 ever and Smith, a junior, ran the eighth-fastest national time this year (46.55) at the Chandler Rotary Invitational in Arizona.
Wells clocked 10.47 to take second in the seeded 100-meter dash and Harris went head-to-head with Mt. Miguel junior Brandon Arrington (last year’s state 100 and 200 champion) in the Invitational heat. Arrington won by one hundredth of a second in 10.32 — the third-fastest at Arcadia. Harris’ 10.33 was good enough for fourth all-time at Arcadia and one hundredth of a second off the state record for a sophomore).
Arrington doubled back to win the 200 in 20.35, breaking Noah Lyles’ meet record of 20.48, set in 2016. Lyles, of T.C. Williams, Alexandria, Va., still holds the Arcadia 100 meter record of 10.17.
After finishing second in the mile the previous two years to Ventura’s Sadie Engelhardt, who opted to forgo her last high school season to compete in Open and pro races, senior Jane Hedengren of Timpview, Utah, made history by establishing a national two-mile record of 9:34.12. Interviewed one minute after, she took her stunning achievement in stride.
“I felt all right, but I wanted to go faster,” said Hedengren, whose effort also broke the national 3,000 and 3,200 records. “Thank you, Arcadia, for cheering me on.”
Maliyah Collins’ blazing anchor leg helped Rosary win the Invitational girls 4x100 in 45.47, the sixth-fastest time in the nation this year and fourth fastest at Arcadia. Christina Gray anchored reigning City Section champion Carson’s 46.58 first-place effort in the preceding seeded race.
The Invitational boys 3200 field included five sub-four-minute milers. Owen Powell of Mercer Island, Washington won the eight-lapper in 8:39.86. Fifteen-year-old New Zealander Sam Ruthe, who ran a 3:58 mile last month, was third in 8:40.95
A highly anticipated showdown took place in the Invitational girls shot put, where Aliso Niguel junior Jaslene Massey, who won the Orange County Championships in March with a throw of 50 feet, seven inches (No. 3 in the nation this year) prevailed with a 48-09.50 effort. Senior Aja Johnson of Sherman Oaks Notre Dame, who won the 2023 state crown and was the runner-up last spring, finished second 48-01.00.
The roles were reversed in the discus, where Johnson (the 2024 state champion) took first place with a throw of 159-01 while Massey was second (157-03).
Long Beach Wilson’s Loren Webster won the Invitational girls long jump with a leap of 19 feet, 10 inches, and Camren Smith of Quartz Hill won the Invitational boys triple jump at 49-06.00.

From her early days as a young fiddler picking up prizes at youth fiddle competitions, accomplishment has defined Alison Krauss’ career
She’s cleaned up on trophies from the Recording Academy
the International Bluegrass Music Association
and numerous other acronymned institutions
and earned the highest civilian honor in her birth state of Illinois last year
She continues to rack up the achievements at an easy clip: Arcadia
her newest album with Union Station and their first together in 14 years
along with fiddler Stuart Duncan joining them on the road
Krauss recalls first encountering Moore and his singular voice at a Kentucky Fried Chicken bluegrass festival as a 14-year-old
Krauss sees Moore as an enlivening addition
and her admiration for her colleague hasn’t waned
As she stares down a strident tour schedule that extends through the end of the summer
Krauss remains careful to protect the instrument that has connected her to millions of people over her decades in the bluegrass business
Pausing amid Union Station rehearsals ahead of their run together
Krauss unravels some of her thinking around Arcadia
and how songs transport her through time and memory
What made you feel like the time was right for another Union Station record
Alison Krauss: It’s always a process to get the right songs together
I’ve been looking for songs since we made Paper Airplane
I’m sure if COVID wouldn’t have happened
we probably would have been in there sooner
I sent out a group message in the beginning of 2021
“I think we’ve got some good songs here
we want to get together and listen.” Whenever we record
we find the first song that sounds like the opening to the record and have one that feels like that for a while
Then you find another one that might feel that way
When I heard “Looks Like the End of the Road,” it really felt like
You’ve talked about the record snapping into place around “Looks Like the End of the Road” elsewhere
You know you can’t control it and you’re a passenger to the story
“Looks like the End of the Road,” the first half
all the stuff I’ve been holding on to
you’ve got “The Hangman” about resisting evil
“Granite Mills” about workers dying in a factory fire
and the lament for a young soldier in “Richmond on the James.” To what extent did these songs come from a sense of historical resonance with our present day
here’s the pattern.” It’s not beforehand
The songs find you and then you kind of find a pattern within them
and if you gather tunes from when they’re writing during a certain time in their life
there’s going to be similarity in there
those thoughts that you have regarding music
The things that come into your mind that are only for you
personal experience you have with these things
I always think about what makes a person who they are
Songs are more powerful than political people
It’s been like that throughout history
The whole thing is important to people and how they get around
You may need to have someone sing your story for you
You may not have known that this was your story
and to be a part of it is a really powerful experience
I find it – I don’t know what other word to use
Why does daydreaming hold such importance for you
when we’re so often discouraged from it as adults
It has possibilities in every area of how you see yourself
You may have an understanding of another person you didn’t have
because some musical moment took you some place you didn’t think it would
You have things you’re familiar with that will take you to the same place
I’m careful with certain records because
I don’t want them to change where they took me as a kid
because I want to keep that place that it takes me for myself.” I don’t understand why it works that way
I always feel like you’ve got to be really careful with the words that come out of your mouth when you’re singing
about what words are coming out of your mouth
where it’s like I don’t want to “tape over” whatever memories or feelings I already have associated with them
It’s the same with me: “I’d love to hear that
but I’m gonna wait.” I don’t want to mix my life up with what that [music] did back then
I watched Nashville Bluegrass Band from 1985 or something
It’s costly when you remember hearing something for the first time
The only thing that lets you go back is hearing these tunes again
Looking back on your experience with dysphonia
and the time you took away from recording and public performance
what do you see about that period now that you couldn’t see while you were going through it
the only time you thought about your voice
I went to the same voice teacher I see now
“You’ve got to clean off your desk,” which was really funny
because anytime I’d go to the studio
you’ve got too many other things on your mind
When there’s grief or too much stress
like if you want to cry or you’re angry
try to find other ways to make sure I don’t get bogged down
My voice teacher says some really funny stuff at times that I probably can’t repeat
I go see him pretty regularly to get ready
When you count on [your voice] and it goes away one time
you don’t sweep the floor one time and it’s done forever
You gotta keep sweeping the floor.” That helped

Culture Beat is an arts & entertainment blog based in Providence, RI that also covers the New England region and other parts of the globe.
It’s an excellent array of music that’s somewhat stripped down with the acoustic elements having a major presence
For the vocals, both Krauss and Russell Moore alternate on those duties with the album being the latter’s first record with the band. With this new introduction, there’s also a chapter closing with it being the final project to feature Dan Tyminski on acoustic guitar and mandolin
the various talents within each song provide a nice assortment of arrangements and structures
There’s something different occurring with each tune
which proves that despite the amount of time that has passed and the shifting of membership
this band can still exhibit a pristine quality that few can match
If you’re the type who appreciates great songwriting and storytelling
then Arcadia will make for an ideal listening experience
it makes complete sense that Moore could just jump in with the band she leads and pick up where they left off
It’s a testament to the brilliance and artistry and it absolutely deserves praise
here are my top tracks off of the Album of The Week:
who also plays guitar as part of Krauss and Plant’s band
“North Side Gal” is an excellent cover song
It’s a departure from the amplification of McPherson’s original
but I love the cohesiveness that’s provided through the instrumentation
I’m very much looking forward to when this act comes to “The Creative Capital” and if they’re coming to your friendly neighborhood music venue
then make sure to attend if you have the opportunity to do so
then giving this record a listen is an absolute must

At HIMSS25, healthcare data analytics company Arcadia showcased its CareJourney acquisition and introduced AI Factory
spoke with MobiHealthNews post-conference about the expanding role of generative AI in healthcare
emphasizing its impact on value-based care
clinical decision-making and operational efficiency
MobiHealthNews: How has the data analytics space changed with the rise of generative AI
Luke Hansen: The rise of generative AI in data analytics has enhanced the breadth and depth of insights available to healthcare organizations
Much of the conversation about AI in healthcare up until recently has focused on improving clinical efficiency
fully deployed AI-driven tool sets also provide sophisticated functionality to support providers and payers in optimizing care and operations before and after a clinical encounter
These opportunities can be considered in three distinct areas:
AI-enabling a high-level understanding of performance in upstream contracting and network development and helping healthcare organizations that engage in contract development outline where operational focus can yield the most return across diverse provider or health plan partners
AI-powered modeling allows providers to optimize their value-based care strategies
AI has been heralded as a game changer for documentation and automation
an even greater and transformative clinical application of AI will be real-time diagnostic and therapeutic decision support
reduce misdiagnosis and avoidable utilization
Downstream and outside of a clinical encounter
the industry is moving beyond conventional clinical risk adjustment – where predictive models primarily support reimbursement – to a broader understanding of health and whole-person care
Generative AI is ushering in a more comprehensive view of risk that enables more personalized care
helping to uncover social and behavioral factors influencing patient well-being and equipping providers with actionable insights at the point of care
MHN: What did you and Arcadia get out of HIMSS25
and what were some highlights of the event for the company
Hansen: HIMSS25 provided a platform to showcase Arcadia's latest innovations and reinforce our commitment to transforming healthcare through data-driven insights
One of the biggest highlights was demonstrating how we are delivering on the vision behind our acquisition of CareJourney with Arcadia's unique ability to combine third-party benchmarks with customers' own first-party data to create "complete data."
Another key moment at HIMSS25 was the launch of Arcadia's AI Factory
an AI development platform that enables healthcare analysts to build and train custom models that predict patient needs
organizations can use AI Factory to identify patients with chronic kidney disease who may begin dialysis without proper nephrology care – allowing for early intervention and improved care coordination
Arcadia is focused on accelerating healthcare transformation through an AI-augmented workforce
improved interoperability and personalized patient engagement
We believe AI should serve as an enterprise co-pilot for healthcare
helping every team member – from clinicians to administrators to analysts – work more efficiently
Similar to the familiar goal of ensuring clinicians practice at "top of license," data and analytics teams should now be working more effectively with the support of AI-powered analytics
compassionate care is advanced through our newly announced partnership with League
We are bringing AI-driven personalization to healthcare organizations
helping proactively engage patients and improve long-term health behaviors
interoperability remains foundational to AI and data analytics
Without a seamless exchange of information
the insights needed to drive action – and improve both clinical and financial outcomes – are hamstrung
Arcadia will continue to provide healthcare organizations with scalable data solutions that centralize all relevant information in one place
