James David Campana left this earth for his heavenly home on April 13
and he faced every challenge with strength
Jim was born to Nancy (Ostini) Rotta and Jesse James Horton on January 20
He grew up in Templeton and attended Templeton schools
where he was a tremendously talented athlete
beginning a beautiful journey that would bless them with two cherished daughters
Nothing brought him more joy than seeing his daughters and granddaughters happy and well cared for – his love for them knew no bounds

he carried that same passion and energy into every aspect of his life
He loved riding his Harley alongside his wife and close friends and the peace of camping at the lake and beach
Whether it was a backyard barbeque with family and friends or a community gathering
he took pride in bringing people together and serving others
His barbecue was more than just delicious—it was a reflection of his love for others
Friends and family will always remember the way his cooking made them feel welcomed
Jim had a huge heart and never hesitated to help a friend in need
Lois; his daughters Lindsay (Art) Franklin and Aubrey Campana; and his two granddaughters
While there will be no formal services at this time per his wishes
and family lives on in all who were blessed to know him
donations can be made to Jim’s favorite charity
Jim will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

ATASCADERO — It’s been a decade since Farron Elizabeth Walker opened the doors of her boutique in the heart of Atascadero
Farron reflects on the immense support from the community that has been the backbone of her success
The anniversary open house last Friday was a heartfelt celebration not just of her store
and partners who have helped her build a thriving business
especially with the construction happening around us,” Farron admits
It wasn’t about celebrating me; it was about celebrating the community
They’re the reason I’ve been able to stay in business this long.” Her openness and gratitude toward the people who have supported her over the years are palpable
but her decision to open her business here was driven by a deep sense of community and connection
What she didn’t expect was the incredible bond she would forge with customers who would go on to become like family
who recalls shopping at the store for the past decade and witnessing Farron’s growth firsthand
and Farron has made it a welcoming place for everyone
and it’s been wonderful to see how her store has taken off.”
A key part of Farron’s vision from the beginning was to create a space where multi-generational families could shop together
She wanted her store to be a place where mothers
and even grandmothers could find something they loved
with young girls who once shopped in the store now grown into adults who model for her
Farron has always sought to support local artists and businesses
It’s something that developed organically as she spent more time in the community
“I came from a place where there was a disconnect
I found a true sense of community,” Farron says
I started bringing in local goods and supporting local nonprofits
It became an important part of the business and just as important to the people who shop here.”
Farron’s involvement in the community extends beyond her store
She’s actively engaged with various local charities and events
“I’ve worked with Cammie [Velci’s] foundation [Aloha Project]
and I’ve been involved with Jack’s Helping Hand for several years,” she shares
I saw the importance of supporting local businesses even more
That’s when I decided to dedicate a section of my store to local goods — things made right here on the Central Coast.”
The back section of Farron’s store features handmade knives from Albert Curtis
“I want this to be a place where you can find a gift that feels special — whether it’s jewelry
or a bottle of locally sourced olive oil,” she says
Despite the challenges over the years — construction
and the ever-present ups and downs of business — Farron’s commitment to her customers has remained unwavering
Farron acknowledges the valuable lessons she’s gained along the way
and that taught me how important it is to have financial stability and be prepared for tough times
even when it feels like everything is working against you.”
Cammie Velci praises Farron’s tireless dedication
“She’s one of the hardest-working women I know — completely committed to the community,” Velci says
Whether she’s organizing the fashion show or supporting the foundation [Aloha Project]
It’s hard to even catch up with her for a drink because she’s always working
Farron is a great role model and a wonderful friend
and now working together — it’s really special
She’s humble but always shows up and gives back in big ways
He’s growing up fast — he’s such a big guy now!”
One of Farron’s proudest milestones was the opening of Bloke
“Opening a second store was huge for me,” she says
Farron has remained committed to the belief that community and consistency are the pillars of any successful business
Watching Atascadero evolve with the influx of new businesses and life into the downtown area
she finds it deeply rewarding to see her own business play a part in that transformation
and it feels so satisfying to be part of that growth,” she says
I couldn’t have done it without the support of everyone around me.”
Farron is excited for the future and committed to continuing her work in the community
and I’m so grateful for all the relationships I’ve built along the way,” she says

in a close match that secured the team’s spot in the next round

Atascadero's oldest commercial building was revitalized this weekend with the help of several community members and teens
teens at the Grizzly Youth Academy traveled to the old Atascadero Printery building to help with maintenance
The building was originally crafted in 1915
It was purchased by the city nearly 100 years later with the goal of eventually turning it into a community space
a student at the academy and cleanup volunteer
told KSBY about the work that he and his peers completed
"We've been called in today to clean up the inside and
Some of our guys are back there working on the weeds right now
We have one of our guys mowing the grass," Andrews said
"Our goal is just to help the community today."
Atascadero Mayor Charles Borbeau was also seen aiding with restoration on Saturday
"That's one of the things I love about Atascadero
and it so often occurs in Atascadero— great community spirit
"So many groups come together and do so many things in our city
Saturday's collaboration with the Grizzly Youth Academy was part of the Atascadero Printery Foundation's monthly workday series
which invites locals to volunteer and revitalize the space
More information on the workdays and the history of the building can be found on the Atascadero Printery Foundation's website

The search for a new Atascadero Unified School District superintendent continues after the Board of Trustee's did not approve E.J
"The board has taken into consideration a significant amount of public input from the community and is determined to continue the search for the next superintendent," said Denise McGrew-Kane
A formal job offer had already been drawn up and agreed to by E.J
who is currently serving as the district’s assistant superintendent of educational services
He was the board's top pick for the position
has the selection has been met with opposition from parents and staff within the district
the union president of Atascadero Unified Teachers
previously surveyed staff within the district
"We had four people out of that 101 who answered the survey
and then we were able to gather that there was 81 individuals who said no," Weatherly said
Following the announcement at Tuesday night's meeting
more than half of the people making public comments on this agenda item chose not to speak
It should have never taken this many people to showing up for you to hear," said Anthony Villanueva
"We want to thank the board for making the decision that you made tonight to continue the search
but what we ask for is additional transparency because there was a lack of transparency and like the previous speaker said
this went too far," said one community member
"You're putting teachers in a position of having to choose whether to spend our time helping kids or holding you accountable," said Jehan Mirzaei
a 6th-grade teacher at Atascadero Middle School
Rossi was notably absent from Tuesday's board meeting
KSBY tried reaching out to him for comment but was unsuccessful
Rossi has been with Atascadero Unified since 2007 when he served as assistant principal at Atascadero High
He stepped down from that position in 2015 to become the district's assistant superintendent of educational services
Rossi served as superintendent of San Ardo Union School District
Just after his departure in Monterey County and during his arrival to Atascadero
he found himself named in a 2009 San Luis Obispo County Grand Jury report
The Grand Jury looked into a complaint on Rossi’s hiring made to Atascadero Unified in 2009 by an unnamed citizen
While with San Ardo Union, the Grand Jury’s report states Rossi was responsible for a loss of $56,000. He reportedly paid $32,000 as part of a settlement agreement related to the misuse of funds, according to the report
Criminal charges were never filed against Rossi
but concerns over handling funds left local parents concerned
The Grand Jury recommended the district sign a contract with an independent agency to conduct a pre-employment background check when a position has access to public funds
Rossi would have taken over as superintendent on July
The board said the next steps will be shared in the coming weeks
at Santa Ysabel Avenue and Morro Road for suspected violation of disorderly conduct involving alcohol (647(f) PC) and violation of probation conditions (1203.2(a) PC)
at 5880 Ardilla Avenue for suspected violation of inflicting corporal injury on a cohabitant (273.5(a) PC) and on an outstanding warrant
at 6225 Atascadero Avenue for suspected violation of loitering on private property (647(h) PC)
at 8635 El Camino Real on an outstanding warrant from another jurisdiction
at Del Rio Road and Chico Road for suspected violation of failure to appear on a misdemeanor charge (978.5 PC)
The arrest records presented are provided by the Atascadero Police Department
Suspects are innocent until proven guilty by a court of law

Doorbell cameras recently captured at least one mountain lion roaming around an Atascadero neighborhood
I could see it walked right by this gate and was probably heading across the street to my house,” said neighbor Lynn Ayers
and he was crouching to hunt,” added Atascadero resident Marlene Corwin
“The first time a little ways from the kitchen window and the second time under our picnic table and crouching like he's hunting,” said Anne Arnett
Arnett used to walk near her house every day but tells me she is now scared to go outside
and it inhibits my walking and exercise on this street
I want to go somewhere and walk now,” Arnett said
Ayers has lived in her home near the mountain lion sightings on Chauplin Ave
“That was the first time we have seen a mountain lion so close to town,” Ayres said
Brandon Swanson with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife says they’ve received two reports of mountain lions in this area in the past two weeks
“We generally have always let our cats go in and out and we're thinking we will not give my two cats the freedom to do that now,” Ayers said
which attract mountain lions since it is their main food source
Swanson also says mountain lions are driven by their stomach
so they will come out whenever they are hungry
Fish and Wildlife will only get involved if the lion interacts directly with the public
He says he doesn’t feel there is a concern for anyone at the nearby high school at this time
but I certainly don't want my cats to become a mountain lion meal,” Ayers said
If you do happen to come across a mountain lion
Fish and Wildlife says don't turn your back on the animal
and even throw something at the mountain lion if needed
locals in Atascadero shared their opinions on President Trump's first 100 days in office
“I don't think there's anything higher than an A++
"He's working for us for the first time — I'm 65 years old — for the first time in my life.”
“I dislike pretty much everything," Tori Keen said
“It's a no-go for me," Gabrielle Alvarado said
Residents had very different opinions on immigration policies and border control
"He's doing things I've said for years," Dawson continued
People have been taking advantage of us for years.”
"My grandpa was able to work for the railroads here
so he got the citizenship for my mom and everyone else
So I think it hurts now that others can't get that same opportunity.”
President Trump has signed more than 145 executive orders thus far
declaring illegal immigration a national emergency and withdrawing the U.S
Some locals say they're happy with some policies
such as President Trump's health and human services secretary
Others are concerned about the potential problems created by certain environmental
"We don't often bridge those gaps to have productive conversations
to find common ground," Keen said of communication between the left and the right
Ashley is your community reporter covering news and sports in northern San Luis Obispo County
Wednesday marked the first time the suspect in last week’s deadly hit-and-run in Atascadero stood before a judge in the case
pleaded not guilty to charges of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated
and a misdemeanor charge for possession of fentanyl involving the death of José Gutiérrez
The 11-year-old died Friday after being hit while walking on the sidewalk along El Camino Real
It was also an emotional hearing as many of José's family members broke down into tears once Bernal appeared in the San Luis Obispo courtroom
José’s father needed to be restrained by family members
“A child walking home from school who should not have to worry about a vehicle leaving the roadway
jumping the curb and hitting striking them
they should not have to worry about that," San Luis Obispo County District Attorney Dan Dow said
told community reporter Ashley Stevens over the phone
"Anytime you’re dealing with the death of an innocent 11-year-old boy
it's a very difficult process for an attorney."
Bernal remains in San Luis Obispo County Jail with bail set at $1 million
He’s due back in court March 24 where a discussion on reducing his bail will take place
Atascadero is seeing some of the biggest growth in the county in housing development
the community is adapting to a statewide requirement and where new housing units will be going in over the next three years
the state of California asks us to report to them the number of housing units that we develop in our city as part of our Housing Element Report,”Community Development Director Phil Dunsmore said
These housing units fall into four categories: very low
Atascadero is two-thirds of the way done with four developments in the works
and Dove Creek Mixed Use projects according to the city council meeting agenda
"We also have to look at building our economy to support those housing units
because every house that gets money to our community is also an added burden of the additional police staff
the additional maintenance on the roads," Dunsmore added
In order to finance a growth in population
Dunsmore says they’ll need retail to provide tax revenue and property tax revenue from commercial spaces
With 307 units left of the 843 required by 2028
Dunsmore says there could be challenges over the next three years
This includes the potential for inflation to impact market rates and affordability
as well as tariffs impacting the cost of steel and construction material
Low income units also rely on grant funding which Dunsmore says is not guaranteed money
“We don't intend to grow this community out of what it is today
and to drastically change it," Dusmore explained
"We're just trying to stay keep our growth rate at about one percent or less than that a year
which basically keeps our community alive.”
“Is there fears from the community that people don't want this growth?" San Luis Obispo Council Deputy Director James Worthley said
but they also want their sandwich shops opened and staffed
and they want their restaurants to be fully functional
not only half open because there's only a few servers left.”
Some community members however are optimistic of the growth

ATASCADERO — The Atascadero City Council met for its regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday
The main topic of the evening was the Del Rio Road Commercial Area Specific Plan
“This is not the first time we’ve looked at this property
We’ve looked at this property a few times for different proposals
but now we’ve got one that fits,” said Community Development Director Phil Dunsmore to the council.
Planning Manager Kelly Gleason then addressed the council with the details of the project
which is aimed towards tourism in the city
including lodging units and an RV park in the southeast project site of the Del Rio Road Commercial Area Specific Plan
The area currently covers 11 separate parcels and is about 26 acres in size
“The Del Rio Road Specific Plan has been around for quite some time
It was originally adopted in 2012 with the Walmart project on this particular site
We came back for some amendments in 2020 when Walmart withdrew their application and opened up some development potential, and some use potential on the site
and redid some traffic analysis to help some projects move forward a little more quickly,” added Gleason
The council saw the first version of Del Rio Ranch in 2021
which was also aimed towards tourists but also had a lot of commercial and mixed-use development
the applicant team has revised its proposal and is moving forward with what was presented during this week’s meeting
The Planning Commission has already seen the recent proposal and recommended approval
“There’s a master plan of development being considered tonight for what’s basically a large RV and glamping resort,” continued Gleason
“There’s a commercial center as well at the corner of El Camino [Real] and Del Rio
to be sort of the public-facing side of the project.”
There are close to 22,000 square feet of commercial use planned for the project. Featuring three-story commercial buildings with shops on the first floor and hotel units above
The site would also include 98 RV spaces
Also included is a public road proposed off of El Camino Real as part of the Del Rio Road Commercial Area Specific Plan
The road will service properties to the south that are being rezoned to multi-family residential as part of the City’s General Plan Update
Actions other than the Master Plan of Development for the night included a land use and zone change, which eliminates the residential portion of the site. Modification to the housing element
which takes the site out of the city’s housing site inventory
is not needed to meet the housing sites available to meet the city’s Regional Housing Needs Allocation (RHNA) numbers
And specific plan amendments that update maps and more
we’re looking at a General Plan and Zoning Map amendment this evening
and adoption of the Master Plan of Development,” added Gleason
“So this is the final action on this project
If they move forward with this proposed design
they can move forward to building permits.”
Both council members and community members brought up concerns with the safety of one of the proposed exits from the RV park
condition 41 says: a sight distance shall be provided for all proposed entries into the project site
All entries shall comply with adopted sight distance standards,” said Director of Public Works Nick DeBar. “What I would propose adding to it would be: developers shall perform all measures recommended by a licensed traffic engineer and approved by the city engineer. Such measures may include grading
and other traffic safety enhancements (flashing signs
etc.) No driveway access shall be allowed onto Del Rio Road that fails to comply with adopted sight distance standards.”
The applicants agreed to the proposed changes to the language.

ATASCADERO — The community was saddened to hear of the passing of its beloved Dan “The Barber” Phillips at the end of January
Dan and his wife Ramona moved to Atascadero 63 years ago
Phillips became one of Atascadero’s most well-loved barbers
which is where his moniker “Dan the Barber” so lovingly came from
“We’ve been very happy here
The people are wonderful and have been very kind to us
Dan has enjoyed every minute of being out in the barbershop talking with all of the wonderful people,” Ramona told Atascadero News
which Dan spent a large majority of his time in
is connected to the Phillips’ family home
so as Dan headed into his 90s and continued to cut hair
“It was wonderful. He didn’t have to drive
He just walked down the little few steps into the barbershop and put the open sign on
Dan and Ramona were married in 1952 and spent over seven decades together in a beautiful relationship where they later raised two children
Denise (who sadly passed last year) and Daniel.
We just enjoyed being together for 72 years,” Ramona said of her marriage to Dan
Dan would only charge $10 for a haircut at his shop
even though some of his clients tried to persuade him to raise his prices
Dan always decided to keep his haircut price at $10 and would be found telling his wife
many of his clients would always give him more than $10 for his services
“Some of the people just came on a Saturday
They just talked about whatever they wanted to talk about
He told lots of stories,” added Ramona
“It was just a real wonderful place for people to come and meet and enjoy each other
Ramona went on to say that she’s been receiving lots of cards and flowers from the community and that some are being left in front of the barbershop
People have also been reaching out to her via the telephone. In fact, one of the notes came from First District Supervisor John Peschong
“I was so sorry to hear of Dan Phillips’ passing
and his barber shop was more than a business
It was a place where friendships were made and stories were shared. His presence and dedication to the community will not be forgotten
Keeping you in my prayers and wishing you comfort in the days ahead.”
Ramona said that she thought his note and all the others have been wonderful
After hearing of his passing, Atascadero News took to social media to ask the community what they remembered most about our beloved “Dan the Barber.”
“I worked next door to him for 6 years. We had a connecting door from the barbershop to the office I was in
and I could hear his going on all day. Loved listening to all the banter & stories he shared with his and our mutual clients
Dan had a very infectious laugh,” said business neighbor Anita Ball
“Many of the world’s problems were solved in his shop
I became close to Dan and Ramona and will miss him dearly.”
Lorraine Hurst shared her love of Dan and his countless stories and also mentioned that Dan had cut her husband’s hair for over 40 years before his passing
John Rickwald commented on how Dan would often accept an 18-pack of eggs for a haircut
“Dan was a great man. I would stop by there [the barbershop] often just to talk along with others. Dan had a joke aboutif you could not pay for a haircut
He said people walked out of the barbershop with one shoe
Dan’s celebration of life will take place on Saturday
at 10 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 2600 Ramona Road, which is where Dan attended church with Ramona
“The military will be there because he served in Korea,” Ramona added
“If the weather permits, they’re going to do a flyover.”
“He just did want me to tell everybody thank you
How much he appreciated them coming into the barbershop
‘I especially want you to thank everybody,'” she concluded

The Atascadero Unified School District is continuing its search for a new superintendent
Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services
Rossi was the school board’s top pick for superintendent up until Tuesday night
Due to concerns voiced by some people in the community
the board voted to not move forward with offering Rossi the position
"I truly love Atascadero Unified School District and the community of Atascadero.”
Rossi plans to stay in his current position with the school district
Rossi was named in a 2009 SLO County Grand Jury report
accusing him of misuse of funds while serving as superintendent in Monterey County
Rossi says the allegations against him were false
“It was never misuse of funds or misappropriation of funds," Rossi said
I spent successfully refuting those false allegations of over payment.”
Rossi also says both he and the San Ardo Unified School District agreed to a settlement to end all future claims and there was never an admission of guilt
While serving as principal at Atascadero High School in 2009
there were also accusations made by citizens found in the grand jury report involving missing funds
“I was made aware of some potentially inappropriate fundraising practices while I was the high school principal," Rossi said
"And so I took that information and forwarded that to our Director of Fiscal Services
With the search moving forward for Atascadero Unified’s next superintendent
parents say they’d like a new leader to have certain qualities
“I think I'd like to see a superintendent that is maybe education-based and also has experience in childhood education
leading childhood education," parent Trevor Fry said
"Also understanding that rigid and strict classrooms often don't work for a lot of kids.”
I reached out to the school district to find out how much money was allocated for the superintendent search but have not received a response
According to the school district's acting board president
the school board still anticipates having a new superintendent by July 1 with the hope of bringing forward a new person for the job sometime next month

the Says have considered how they can retain their customer base
“How do we keep ourselves relevant without trying to take on a new identity that we're not?” Say said
Atascadero Chamber of Commerce VP of Membership & Special Projects Julie Matthews said this topic often comes up when advising local businesses
“That’s always a conversation with the smaller coffee shops
I think every coffee shop has its own style and their own unique blend,” Matthews said
“That’s what they really need to market and play off of.”
Diane Powell first started coming to Malibu Brew because she wasn’t satisfied with the coffee elsewhere
“I was just looking for something different,” Powell said
“I drove over here on my lunch break and I pass a lot of coffee places.”
“That’s the bulk of our business is relying on those very
very loyal customers that become more like family to us,” Say said

ATASCADERO — It was recently announced that Atascadero’s North County Christian School (NCCS) will be changing its name starting in the 2025-26 school year to Brookside Christian Academy (BCA)
Along with the name change comes course changes
bringing back high school-level education, and the continuation of delivering faith-based learning to the North County.
“We are so grateful for the place NCCS has had in the community. We recognize this shift is possible largely to the trust the community has in the current school
and it is our greatest desire to steward that trust into this new season,” said NCCS Vice-Chairman and Secretary Amy Maskal
NCCS has been a staple in private Christian-based education for almost 50 years in the community
The school has built an incredible legacy through all of its financial struggles
and a new surge in enrolling students during the COVID-19 pandemic
NCCS teamed up with Concordis Education Partners
which consults private Christian schools throughout the nation
“NCCS/BCA has contracted with Concordis to offer support over the next 5-6 years,” stated Maskal
“They provide support for a wide range of things: some ‘back of house’ administrative functions
school board and technical document support
and Head of School support and networking.”
Along with the upcoming name change for the 2025-26 school year
the school will also gain new colors and a new mascot
which is still to be determined and will become a Classical Christian Education (CCE) school.
“This is a return to the time-tested roots of education that has produced the greatest minds our modern world has known,” Maskal added
“Classical Christian Education (CCE) teaches children how to think
not just what–all founded in the Word of God
are unfathomable influences in how children process information
been a more valuable character trait to develop in our children.”
the upcoming BCA will also offer three levels of schooling on a weekly basis
“Tuesday-Thursday will be the main academic days (‘Core’ schedule)
and is the lowest level of enrollment offered to our families,” Maskal clarified
“Monday will be a ‘Core+’ day
where students will have the opportunity to work through assigned lab work over a teacher-directed
structured day. This will also be a day students can receive additional support to either reinforce or supplement instruction in the Core days. Fridays will be ‘Enrichment’ days
where extracurriculars of various sorts will be available. Students can choose to enroll in a three-
which will retain its current staff and board
Each class will feature 12 students to each teacher
“One of the main shifts in CCE is how the classroom looks. There is a much higher level of involvement between the teacher and the students. Asking a teacher to engage at this level with a high-count classroom has proven to be difficult in schools that have gone before us. Twelve has been shown to be the golden number for a successful classroom experience for all,” said Maskal
The ’25-26 school year will also bring back the return of high school academics at BCA
High school students have not been included in the school’s curriculum since the graduating class of 2020. Currently
as well as its thrift store. At this time, it is unclear if the thrift store’s name will change
there is no legal requirement for a change
registration is open for BCA for the ’25-26 school year
Maskal stated that existing families at NCCS will have priority for re-enrollment spots but that every family
will be interviewed before officially registering
“The hope we have for parents considering BCA would be this: if you are looking for a school that desires to come alongside you
to partner in raising children to truly know God and rise to meet the fullest extents of who they were created to be
shepherded in beauty and goodness and discipled in truth
For new or existing parents with questions about enrollment
“Our biggest hope for the school will be the cultural change
We hope and pray that the culture that is fostered by these changes will result in a group of young people who love one another as God has loved us,” concluded Maskal
with the assurance of who they are in Christ and what things are true and beautiful
they would be ready to face a world dropping into increasing chaos. That we would be engaged with families
working together to educate and disciple their children to the fullest extent of who they were created to be.”
NCCS hosted two town hall meetings on Thursday, Jan. 30, and Saturday, Feb. 8, at Atascadero Bible Church to discuss the changes. Interested parties can find the video for the Jan. 30 meeting here: youtube.com/live/zmyc4br9rcs
When you're stuck waiting an hour for the bus
Atascadero’s Dial-a-Ride service is useful
a new operator is taking over the program — San Luis Obispo's regional transit service
KSBY's Lindsie Hiatt spoke with residents and officials about how the switch may impact them
“We've been having conversations with the San Luis Obispo Regional Transit Authority for quite some time to take a look at what it would take to consolidate Atascadero’s Dial-A-Ride services," said Ryan Betz
an analyst for Atascadero's Public Works Department
"There’s been a lot of success with the cities of Paso [Robles] and Morro Bay having to consolidate their transit services."
Bentz said they're looking at best practices to determine what would work for them
He said the consolidation will mean that many of the same tickets
"We're certainly not as big a city as Paso Robles," said Bentz
"We're always looking for new and more efficient ways of operation.”
The new program will also be eligible for more grant funding
is well positioned for grant money for bus replacement
"And so we're really excited to offer that service to our riders.”
Betz says the city is hopeful that more funds and features will lead to more riders in town using the service
She relies on the county’s public transit to get around town
“I take it to doctor appointments and physical therapy and go shopping sometimes when I can get a small load or something,” said Deweese
Deweese said the bus service in Atascadero is convenient
they run about every hour north and every hour south," said Deweese
"And they're pretty much on time every once in a while
Dial-A-Ride may soon join forces with the regional transit authority
“Have you heard of Dial-A-Ride?” asked KSBY's Lindsie Hiatt
"But I don't use them because this is cheaper.”
“If you were ever in a pinch," asked Hiatt

Some business owners in Atascadero say retail theft is an ongoing problem
My vendors would come to me all the time and say that things had been stolen out of their space,” said Hope Chest Emporium owner Karen McNamara
Atascadero police say the department has received 20 theft reports since October of 2024
McNamara rents out a 6,000 square-foot store on El Camino Real to independent vendors
who pay anywhere from $50 to $300 a month to sell at her store
“I would guess that we probably lose somewhere total or $500 a mont
but when you're an individual vendor that loses $100 items and you're
you're supposed to pay your space rent of $300 a month
that's a lot,” McNamara said. That’s why she now has security cameras in every room and posts surveillance photos of people she says stole from her shop
but if we don't bring to people's attention that if you steal
then we just open the door for more and more people to come and steal,” McNamara said

A San Luis Obispo County Judge has handed down the maximum sentence to a former Atascadero barber convicted of sex crimes
After motions for a new trial were denied earlier this week
Nathan Abate was sentenced Thursday to eight years and eight months in state prison
a San Luis Obispo County jury convicted the 36-year-old of three counts — rape by force or fear
I understand that the jury has found me guilty
and though I disagree with the verdict and intend to appeal
I would like to express my deep remorse for the mistakes I made as a young man," Abate said as he began his first and only statement to the court
Before Judge Frye handed down his sentence
Abate took time to recount how he has changed from the person he was when the crimes were committed
He choked up as he spoke of his faith and his wife
and he reiterated sentiments his wife shared last week during impact statements that he is the sole provider for his family and supports his aging mother
Judge Michael Frye handed down the maximum sentence
Judge Frye said his decision was based on a variety of factors
He acknowledged how long ago the crimes took place and that there is evidence Abate has moved forward with his life
he cited compelling testimony about the long-term effects on the victims
and he took into account the recommendation from parole which called for the maximum sentence
"I am faced with two very opposing things," the judge said
Abate moving forward with his life and the victims not."
District Attorney Dan Dow reflected on what Abate said
"I'm disappointed that he really expressed no remorse
the people that he harmed in this case," Dow said
Abate will show the community and show these victims specifically that he's sorry for what he did
that he acknowledges it was wrong and that it harmed these individuals
and that he somehow accepts responsibility for what he did."
Abate expressed concern about having to register as a sex offender for life
He also requested he serve his time locally
Abate is expected to be held at the California Men's Colony in San Luis Obispo
He will make another court appearance on January 21 for a restitution status determination hearing

After Old Morro Road in Atascadero sustained damage during the storms in January of 2023
raising safety concerns among several nearby residents
Atascadero resident Terry Carroll contacted the city about the sunken-in portion of the road just past the 13000 block
and it’s been that way for years and it keeps seeping in from the storms
She said the sunken-in section is hard to see at night
making it dangerous for neighbors and a liability for travelers who take the road as a detour
But because it’s used as a detour road for accidents on Highway 41
out-of-towners are not aware," Carroll said
the City of Atascadero's Deputy Director of Public Works
said this is one of many slides that occurred during the storms
“With most things that happened during emergencies
we don’t have funding planned for those things
So we had no funding planned for Old Morro Road," Hayes said
Old Morro Road is technically still usable in its current state
with its current Pavement Condition Index being 37 out of 100
The Public Works official explained that addressing the road is a matter of finding the funding before crews can start repairing
"We are going into our next budget cycle right now
So we're looking at the potential for including some funding for Old Morro Road as part of that budget cycle," Hayes said
He said repairs could begin as soon as this summer
Hayes reports that the city could look into some temporary adjustments along Old Morro Road
"Something we can look into is potentially adding some lights there
maybe a stop ahead sign to give people a little bit more notice that aren't familiar with the road," Hayes said
