Jeanne Atchison passed away peacefully on Saturday She was preceded in death by husband, Bob; sons, Ron and Dan; daughter Craig (Pat) Atchison and Mike (Lori) Atchison; daughter 1 great-great grandchild as well many nieces and nephews.  Known to the community she lived in as Mrs she provided her services as a teacher’s aide to North End Elementary for 25+ years It was there she would make her imprint on the Rice Street/North End Community She would help students who needed that extra push students with behavioral problems along with many others She was well loved by the staff and students and when she retired in 1995 it was a huge loss for the school.  After retirement she got to focus on the thing that made her the happiest Her house was a focal point of our family as there were always kids there Sometimes for evenings on a Saturday night when their parent’s wanted to go bowling There was never a dull moment at Grandma’s She is the source of years of entertainment Sometimes it was her use of the English language or even hopping up on the main stage at a small town bar in South Dakota but we can rejoice in the fact that she is reunited with those she lost before her Watching her lose three of her beloved children in the last few years was not easy but we know that they were waiting for her at the gate along with the many others who she’s greatly missed over the years It's a welcoming party that may still be going on as they are Immerman’s/Atchison’s after all She lived ninety-four years of life and she lived it her way In fact her theme song in death would definitely be “I did it my way” To put her life perspective into a few paragraphs is impossible but we hope to do her ninety-four years justice as we celebrate her life on February 15th 2025 from 2-5 PM at Mueller-Bies Funeral Home - Roseville She loved the color purple so we urge attendees to wear their favorite shade of the color Enter your phone number above to have directions sent via season hit With the season winding into its final month Martin says they are focusing on the javelin throw where she took second recently at the John McDonnell Invitational “There’s been a lot of adjusting to a lot of new experiences I’ve been having this season but I’m proud of where I am right now,” Martin added shot put and 200 on the first day before the long jump the javelin throw and the 800 meter run on the second day “I love it so much,” Martin said of the challenging competition “but it’s a lot to balance your time towards seven events You kind of have to take time away from other events to get better but it’s just a great feeling to be doing all of these events and getting better at each.” Martin is set to focus on the javelin the rest of the way Missouri State is slated to compete this weekend at the SMU Invitational in Dallas before the Missouri State Twilight on May 8th the Arkansas Twilight on May 9th and the Missouri Valley Conference meet at Southern Illinois on immediate and dramatic population growth This rapid influx of workers placed intense strain on the city's infrastructure Workers arriving in these rapidly expanding urban centers were often forced to find whatever accommodations they could frequently resulting in overcrowded and substandard living conditions In response to the urgent need for adequate housing the government and private industry collaborated to construct planned communities across the nation These communities were designed to include not only housing but also essential amenities such as schools high-quality housing for the burgeoning workforce Built in 1941 as part of the defense housing program Atchison Village was intended to provide housing for shipyard workers and their families The community was designed with a focus on durability and livability featuring well-constructed homes and a layout that encouraged a strong sense of community among residents Atchison Village is a unique historical landmark Unlike many other wartime housing projects that were demolished or fell into disrepair after the war Atchison Village remains a vibrant community It is now a collection of privately owned houses This cooperative management model has helped preserve the character and historical integrity of the village while fostering a sense of shared responsibility and community spirit among residents Atchison Village is noteworthy not only for its well-preserved architecture but also for its representation of the broader social and economic trends of the WWII era The development of such communities was a critical component of the war effort enabling the rapid mobilization and sustained productivity of the workforce with its permanent housing and comprehensive amenities provided a stable and supportive environment that helped workers and their families thrive during a time of intense national effort While many of the dormitories and temporary housing structures built during WWII have since disappeared Atchison Village endures as a successful implementation of government and industrial collaboration in addressing urgent social needs The village's preservation allows current and future generations to explore and understand the living conditions and community life of the WWII home front Visitors to Atchison Village can witness firsthand the enduring impact of wartime housing initiatives and the continued relevance of cooperative living arrangements The houses in Atchison Village reflect the practical and functional architectural style typical of wartime housing developments these homes were designed to provide comfortable and efficient living spaces for the influx of workers and their families during World War II the houses in Atchison Village are a great example of practical and community-focused design principles of wartime housing They provide a glimpse into the living conditions and architectural trends of the 1940s reflecting the efforts to create stable and supportive environments for the workers who contributed to the war effort The preservation of these homes allows visitors to appreciate their historical significance and the enduring value of Atchison Village Note: Visitors may view the village during a driving tour please be aware that there are current residents that live in the housing units and there are no NPS staff at the site
