Star Dive Bar “refires” in Atco and Williamstown bringing new branding, exciting new menu items and an attractive refreshed style to the two pubs which were previously known as Racks And with all of the changes at the beloved restaurants and bars what stays the same for Alisha’s 5 Star Dive Bar is that they are still owned by Alisha and Jay… and the same amazing staff are there to greet you with big smiles The big announcement of the new name raced through social media last week and had everyone excited… but for some customers it also introduced a few questions!  So I caught up with Alisha Jay and Manager Matt to learn all about Alisha’s 5 Star Dive Bar And in the process… of course I got to try out some of the new menu items such as the Meatloaf Stack High Roller Prime Rib sandwich and even their Classic Wings and more!  In some ways this is as much about “catching-up” the branding and décor to the changes that had already been taking place at the former Racks pubs.  Today Alisha’s 5 Star Dive Bar is a comfortable and friendly spot where you can meet up with friends to catch the game or a more lively late evening experience with friends watching a live band There’s a comfortable style and vibe for both locations now.  Atco has a fresh new exterior color and for the first time there is signage on the buildings.  Beautiful signage actually things have definitely changed over the years at Alisha’s restaurants… Today Alisha and Jay own three restaurant/pubs: the two Alisha’s 5 Star Dive Bar locations (Atco But go back to when Alisha was 18 and starting out in the business… she was a bartender/server in places such as the Coastline A few years later she eventually found herself bartending at a little bar in Atco called the Town Tavern she made an offer to buy “Parky’s” which was another Atco bar located in the small strip mall (next to current Alisha’s/Racks) in the space where Dunkin is today.  When the purchase was completed twenty years ago Alisha renamed her new bar “Racks Bar and Grill” Five years later Alisha purchased the property next to the shopping center and built a new home for Racks…  her dream pub Over the years Racks continued to evolve from what originally was a pool table beer and shot place… into a full pub restaurant that felt like home to everyone!  Still offering ice cold beers and a delicious expanded menu… Rack’s had become a place that all friends and family could enjoy Alisha and Jay opened their third restaurant and bar… the Jersey Goat Grill and Public house in Sicklerville featuring a design that targeted a casual-but-trendy experience And at this point after reaching amazing success with three pub restaurants and with today’s Racks pubs being completely different than what they were 20 years ago… she made the decision to change the name while adding in additional style and menu changes Alisha’s 5 Star Dive Bar – The Experience The best way to describe Alisha’s 5 Star Dive Bar is… it is a restaurant and pub for everyone An awesome spot to grab a quick bite to eat catch up with friends for the game or even a fun girls night out sipping on Alisha’s amazing cocktails Likely the Atco location changed the most with this rebranding as the exterior building color was changed to a lighter beige tone matching Williamstown.  Additional decorative lighting was added on the building… and the new signage was installed I haven’t stopped over at Williamstown yet but I understand they also received items originally from Atco such as the front bar facade of corrugated steel panels And keep in mind the warm weather rolling in Alisha’s 5 Star Dive Bar has the outdoor sidebar and patio area and Williamstown offers a more covered outdoor experience During my visit I was fortunate enough to get to try several amazing menu items from Alisha’s 5 Star Dive Bar One of the top selling new items is the Meatloaf Stack which looks like something out of a 5-Star restaurant… not a 5 Star Dive Bar Two thick slices of meatloaf layered with garlic mashed potatoes an incredible gravy and then crispy onions on top Absolutely something that you need to put on your must try list Next up was a classic chicken wing order which they offer in about a dozen different sauces,  I went very traditional with a bone-in wing but also brand new in the menu is a grilled variety for people who want to get that delicious Buffalo wing taste without all those extra fryer calories Wanting to try a burger we chose the Triple B “Bacon Absolutely a delicious large burger patty that was perfectly cooked… all resting on a fresh brioche bun The buffalo sauce is a slightly sweeter variety that is more of a flavor accent than defining the full taste.  The blue cheese crumbles and sauce really work well together We were also nibbling on the Dive Bar Charcuterie Board platter which to many people is more like a pepperoni and cheese plate… but at Alisha’s 5 Star Dive Bar they like to amp things up to the next level Another new item that’s proving to be very popular is the High Roller Carved Prime Rib Sandwich it has Cooper Sharp AND Jack Cheddar Cheese… add in Cherry Peppers and Creamy Horseradish Sauce then top with onion straws all on a fresh long seeded roll As I was leaving from my visit the sun was popping out and the team was getting the outdoor bar area ready for the Friday night and I realized I had never actually sat at that bar Absolutely outdoor bar at Alisha’s 5 Star Dive Bar Atco has made my radar for an upcoming afternoon visit… and I think on my next stop I’ll be trying one of their pizzas which now also includes a hot and honey pepperoni pizza.  Sounds like a winner to me Keep in mind that Friday Nights are $18.99 Prime Rib dinner night, Thursdays offers All-You-Can-Eat snow crabs, and that High Roller Prime Rib sandwich is only $7. Stop in tonight (Monday) for an $8.99 burger! scratch-made menu in a beautiful all new-restaurant space… with everything priced at an affordable “diner menu” level How affordable?  Well in an unscientific comparison between some well known diners in Camden/Gloucester Counties… the Royale Restaurant in most comparisons was priced $1-3 less than others Last week I had a Chicken Parm full meal at another “diner” and paid $18.99… At Royale that same meal is priced at $15.99 And based on my Chicken in Vodka sauce I ordered yesterday at Royale… big portions I stopped in for an early dinner on Monday and caught up with owners Hakan and Jenkins… As well as the full Royale team… who gave me the tour of the beautiful restaurant as well as an update on restaurant’s menu High-end interior… incredible scratch-made dishes… reasonable diner-style prices Hakan grew up in the restaurant industry and for many years was a sous chef (including Atlantic City’s Taj Mahal) and he tells me he wants to be known as a restaurant for the community Perfectly suitable for a very casual “jeans and sneakers” breakfast or a family dinner… but then also would be the perfect place for celebrating a lovely anniversary dinner And when the final details of the liquor license transfer are completed very soon he looks forward to offering delicious beers cocktails and more… making Royal Venue an excellent place to catch up with friends with an innovative cocktail or watching the latest sports action with an ice cold beer Before we go much further… Royale Restaurant Bar & Lounge is located on the White Horse Pike (Route 30) in Atco/Waterford about a Mile and half past the Route 73 interchange.  This is a large facility which many may remember from years ago as Shannon’s Catering For Royale Venue it’s actually 2 complimentary business models with the now open restaurant in it’s own attached 6,500sf building on the left and the large event/wedding halls to the right.  One way to grasp the full direction of the facility… I would say Royale is in the same category as Deptford’s Adelphia’s… both of them offering a restaurant and bar experience For the large Royale Wedding and Event rooms on the right Hakan tells me the remodeling in that space is basically done but there are some construction details still being finalized… so today the focus is on the restaurant The restaurant building on the left is divided into two rooms positioned front and back.  You enter into the lounge area which also has a variety of seating accommodations a wait area and a beautifully designed wine rack The back wall offers a double door entrance into the large dining room space which offers a second much larger bar to the right a beautiful alcove dining area with fireplace to the left…  And the main dining room area that likely seats around 140 people or more Everything is beautifully designed and the construction team did an amazing job with the build-out.   There are so many eye pleasing details to look at from the inverted arches on the walls to the rear shelving area… and the distinctive lighting throughout all of the spaces Honestly I am amazed at how well the final build-out matches the original virtual 3D architect renderings The restaurant is open every day starting at 6:00 AM for breakfast and during the week closes at 10.  Fridays and Saturdays see the hours extended till 2:00 AM with the after 10:00 PM action moved to the front lounge bar area it’s a really unique combination of a higher-end restaurant design with an menu that will appeal to everyone For my early dinner I went with a Chicken and Vodka sauce dish which was a very large platter featuring grilled chicken and a delicious vodka sauce over pasta.  I also had a choice of soup or salad as well as bread I’m a big guy and I can put away some food but half of that meal went home for my wife I wish I had taken more photos of the pages and the menu but I think that was a $15.99 meal Royale has its own in-house bakery and my understanding is the Baker was starting today To explain my focus on the well-priced menu well first off the restaurant does have a high-end look to it… but also originally the menu plan was a higher priced dining experience So I walked into Royale today happily surprised to see that Hakan and Jenkins completely change things up to offer what really is a well priced diner-esque menu While I didn’t do a scientific analysis I looked at several of the well known diners throughout Gloucester and Camden Counties where they had their menu online and honestly Royale seemed to be priced lower than almost everything I could find A cheeseburger platter with French fries and a cup of soup at $11.49 is $3 less than my favorite Gloucester County diner How about a full entree of Roast Spring Chicken at $14.99… with soup or salad and two vegetables Roasted Hot Turkey at $14.99?   Broiled Salmon at $18.99?  All full meals with two veggies and soup/salad Breakfast is also reasonable with a Western Omelette at $12.99 or the House Breakfast plate which features three eggs the dining space and all of my conversations with the staff And with a scratch-made menu at a great price-point. (Facebook) Opened at the current Atco location almost five years ago the brewery and tasting room took over the town’s former Volunteer Firehouse which provided a spacious tasting room and brewery area loaded with extra “character” Brotherton beer is delicious… and the nicely designed space made Brotherton a top brewery destination for both locals and craft beer fans from across the Delaware Valley extra space in the brewery room area as well as the back outdoor patio seating… made Brotherton a hub for the local community to celebrate birthdays Brotherton added a big spark of “foot traffic” to the small Atco Ave commercial area which benefited other local small businesses.  In fact last September a new café “Off The Tracks” opened in an attached space to the brewery partly with hopes of serving delicious food to brewery patrons The Brotherton closing announcement was posted this morning at their Facebook page by brothers Keith and Dan who are the more prominent onsite owners of Brotherton In that statement they share a history of the brewery and fond memories of their experiences not only serving the community… but also becoming a part of the Atco Waterford community Many new friends were made within the walls of Brotherton Brewing Company Last summer i had several opportunities to chat with the brothers about Brotherton related to their decision at the time to list the property and brewery for sale They made it clear that it was “business as usual” while the listing was active and after 5 years of ownership they were exploring opportunities for the space and brewery… which they hoped meant the brewery would continue on Now whenever a brewery closes it does typically raise questions from the beer community regarding “what becomes of the space, is someone taking over”…  and with the real estate listing online since last summer it’s likely to be a question from many I did hear back from the Brotherton team this morning who share that while there is interest in the space, a buyer has not been locked in to take over the property at this time. If you are interested in an awesome facility for your business.. check out the listing at Vantage White and Brew had closed… there is a follow-up to the story coming as another area brewery has signed on take over that Audubon space which is good news to the local businesses there Facebook Link Brotherton Brewing Company is coming to a close We cannot thank everyone enough who has been a part of Brotherton’s story We never could have imagined that this small business venture which started in 2015 with 5 friends in a backyard barn You have helped us celebrate at our annual festivals like Brotherton’s Birthday Oktoberfest and St Patrick’s Day Celebration- Each event is a reminder of the incredible community we’ve built we want to thank our incredible employees that have worked for us over the years Our fantastic tasting room staff made every customer who walked through the door feel like family who has been crafting the Brotherton brews you know and love for over 8 years Each and every one of you contributed to shaping Brotherton Brewing Company into what it is Thank you to all of our retail partners who took a chance on Brotherton when we were a small and decided to stick with us throughout our journey To our customers— This is a tough one because so many of you started as patrons and very quickly became family the friendships and memories we’ve created will last a lifetime Your support and loyalty have been the backbone of Brotherton Brewing but until then the tasting room will remain open for our regular scheduled hours We have some great events planned for our last month open We would love for everyone to stop in and celebrate with us as we share memories and say goodbye (and maybe bring a few tissues) Brotherton Brewing – Last Day March 30 Forever 21 Closing Numerous New Jersey Locations Including Deptford and Cherry Hill The Royale Banquet & Event Center is opening soon in Atco and is in the final stages of construction.  The large banquet facility will also offer a beautiful upscale public restaurant featuring 2 bar areas and plans for a weekend nightclub atmosphere I stopped in twice recently to chat with members of the management team as well as one of the owners.  I got the full tour of the restaurant aspect as well as an overview of the plans for the 31,000sf facility which they hope to open in the next several weeks The Royale team has hired many local residents who are all excited about the “coming soon” opening! Follow along on Facebook as they provide more opening date details Core construction of the restaurant interior is effectively complete and what I saw is an exciting and beautiful restaurant facility which is positioned to be a must-visit destination restaurant they are in the “9th inning” of the buildout and multiple crews were on site during my tour knocking out their final punch-list construction details… so the interior images presented here are architect renderings Of course I will be back ahead of their opening to showcase the final product But everything that’s depicted in these images are actually developed within the restaurant space which offers a front lounge space (with bar) and the second larger rear room is the restaurant dining room and main upscale bar Previously the facility was known as Shannon’s Country House. A NJ.com article from 2012 reported on Shannon’s closing… I had no idea the facility has been empty for 12 years While the exterior walls and roof of the building maybe from the prior establishment from my tour I saw that basically everything else is new about the Royale facility… with an innovative upscale design which effectively brings two food offerings together under one roof; Banquet Hall and Restaurant The main banquet and event space of Royale is approximately 25,000 square feet.  The banquet space offers a variety of configurations so they can handle events and weddings of all sizes… even as large as 1,000 guests or more The restaurant section on the left is in it’s own segregated space… fully attached to the main banquet building but was developed in its own deep rectangular section.  The restaurant is approximately 6,000sf which makes it a somewhat larger restaurant and lounge on its own The team at Royale Banquet and Event Center are already booking weddings and events and if you’re interested in more details please reach out to Dottie or Lauren at Royale.  The provided architect renderings show an absolutely beautiful facility perfect for your wedding or special events Dottie tells me they will be adding a beautiful outdoor component to the property which will be perfect for on site wedding ceremonies or photos During my visit the focus for me was on the public restaurant which as I stated will be an upscale dining experience management is already working on plans for interesting events such as Comedy Club The restaurant has its own distinctive main entrance on the left which opens up into a large lounge area This initial lounge space alone is likely as large as many local taverns and does feature a smaller 6-stool bar off to the left The lounge space will feature several interesting design aspects such as a custom wine rack wall A deeper space off to the right looked like it would also be perfect for bridal showers for similar events The opening at the back of the lounge space leads into the large restaurant area which features inverted arches on the two side walls an intricate cubbyhole shelving design in the back.… and the large main bar The main bar runs in a straight line along the front wall of the restaurant space.  It’s tough to judge when furniture isn’t in place but seeing the main bar in person it looks larger than what is in the architect renderings Dotty tells me that the goal of the restaurant is to be an upscale dining experience where customers are asked to dress to impress As the dining crowd winds down on the weekends (Thurs-Saturday) the center of the restaurant space will be opened up as a dance floor area…  extending the upscale fun I’m also told that they will be opening early on the weekends to serve breakfast and there is some thoughts of having the breakfast available as the nightclub is closing for the evening Overall this is just the highlight of what’s to come there’s absolutely many more details to be worked out Of course will be back ahead of the opening day of the restaurant and will share many more details and images with the readers Royale Banquet and Events490 White Horse PikeAtco NJ New Home For Washington Twp’s South Jersey Periodontics Will Celebrate America ATCO Ltd. Drive-Ins and Dive’s” level of restaurant dedication Many will immediately make a connection with the location when I say it is directly next to the popular Brotherton Brewing Company.  It’s a smart location choice for Off The Tracks Cafe owner Gabriella as her amazing sandwiches and more will likely find their way onto many brewery customer tables A delicious rib eye cheesesteak with Cooper sharp and fried onions or my choice of a Drunken Cutlet sandwich featuring house-made vodka sauce and mozzarella… will pair very well with Brotherton Brewing’s equally delicious craft beers.  (Gabriella you may need to work with your neighbors on a pairing menu!) Off The Tracks Cafe is opened by a young Atco woman Gabriella who with family and friends developed a beautiful cafe which offers second floor indoor seating options as well as outdoor seating in front of the building and off to the side.  And of course there are plenty more tables next door at the brewery It really is a beautiful transformation of the space into the Off The Tracks Cafe which on the 1st floor offers the front customer order/pickup area as well as the coffee bar The design has a retro early 1900s “Steam Locomotive Era” vibe to it with white subway tiles covering the rear wall and a white counter… but with significant contrasting black accents and ceiling as well as white hanging globe lights.  Absolutely it’s modern and new but you’ll feel transported to a much simpler time of the early 1900s Upstairs is a dining cafe area that is always impeccably updated and styled carrying the train theme through signage and old photographs Locals will remember the building up until 2021 was home to the Waterford Township library… and if you’ve really been in the area a long time you would know that the space was originally the Waterford Municipal Building!   Knowing that… makes the Cafe transformation even more impressive I stopped in mid-afternoon yesterday which was opening day and found myself in a packed café with many customers waiting to order and also sitting outside enjoying the beautiful weather Local Facebook groups have really been helping promote Off The Track Cafe including “What’s Up Waterford Township” where almost 800 locals reacted to the news of the opening and 166 comments!  Even the brewery was welcoming the new cafe at their Facebook page So needless to say I really didn’t get a chance to talk directly with Gabriella but I did chat briefly with her mother Angela Angela tells me that Gabriella just this year graduated from Rutgers Business School and is already moving towards her Masters at LaSalle Growing up around successful entrepreneurs lead Gabriella into realizing  that her true interests lie in the business world.  She’s clearly thought this out completely and is doing everything right by getting an amazing education… but then it’s another level of incredible that she’s wasting no time and has already opened what really is a significant cafe and restaurant operation Supporting her in this effort are Mom and Dad (Angela and Joe) as well as family friends Jose and Kathleen (plus an amazing staff) but it was obvious from my 45-minute visit that it’s Gabriella who was keeping the Off The Tracks Cafe… firmly on the tracks.  I had a chance to chat with a couple of the locals there who were incredibly excited for the new cafe.  Upstairs there were two local students who saw me taking a photo of this space and simply volunteered how happy everyone was that the cafe had opened  “our bus drops us off right up the corner For my late lunch visit I ordered the Drunken Cutlet sandwich which is a freshly made chicken cutlet with house-made fresh mozzarella cheese This really was a delicious sandwich and when you look at the photos… trust me when I tell you it tasted as good as it looks A perfectly cooked chicken cutlet on a fresh seeded roll. The vodka sauce and mozzarella cheese meshed perfectly together creating a slightly messy but delicious bite I also ordered a Lemon doughnut which I am told is also made in the cafe kitchen It was a delicious airy doughnut with perfect lemon flavor and it’s…  sweet but not too sweet and I hope to be back again soon to film a video Off The Canadian Pacific Kansas City and ATCO EnPower has completed construction of hydrogen production and refueling facilities in Calgary and Edmonton CPKC officials said today in a press release As part of its hydrogen locomotive program "These fueling facilities are an important part of advancing the ongoing testing of our hydrogen locomotives and advancing the development of our industry-leading program working toward a lower carbon transportation future," said Kyle Mulligan CPKC's assistant vice president of operations technology on-site hydrogen locomotive refueling stations and has signed an agreement to operate the facilities more efficient mode of freight transportation that can serve as a model for the rail industry with support from ATCO EnPower Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) and ATCO EnPower have completed construction of hydrogen (H2) production and refuelling facilities in Calgary and Edmonton The H2 facilities are now fully operational as part of its Hydrogen Locomotive Program is retrofitting a number of diesel locomotives with hydrogen fuel cells to help them operate without directly generating emissions Other railways and manufacturers, such as Alstom, are producing H2-powered trains Although the H2 project is initially focused in Canada CPKC has more than 20,000 miles of railway track throughout North America procurement and construction services for each of the on-site hydrogen locomotive refuelling stations it has also signed an agreement to operate these facilities Each of the facilities includes a 1-MW electrolyzer Hydrogen does not contain carbon in its chain and does not emit CO2 when combusted but it is not naturally generated and must be produced by either electrolyzers or stream reforming of methane gas Electrolyzers separate hydrogen by splitting the molecule out of water more efficient mode of freight transportation serving as a model for the rail industry with support from ATCO EnPower Hydrogen is an energy-dense and lighter gas which can help decrease transportation emissions The future of hydrogen is touted across multiple economic and energy sectors the National Petroleum Council released a 1,200-page report on low-carbon hydrogen the result of two years studying the potential of H2 as a market resource Oil giant ExxonMobil is planning a Baytown Texas project to produce 1 billion cubic feet of H2 per day The project would use carbon-intensive means of generating hydrogen but also capture 98% of that associated CO2 and store or repurpose it For EnergyTech editorial inquiries, please remembered and made present,” Bishop Sullivan said during the morning Mass and consecration of the new altar Nov After pouring Holy Chrism on the altar in five places – in commemoration of the five wounds of Jesus on the Cross – he reverently spread the oil across the surface with his hands “This is the centerpiece of the Eucharistic liturgy the source and summit of who we are as Catholics,” Bishop Sullivan said God’s faithful will gather in thanksgiving [and] all women and men will find welcome.” Gathered on the Solemnity of Christ the King families and clergy listened intently as Bishop Sullivan echoed the day’s reading from Revelation: “To Him be glory and power forever and ever.” our world can be transformed into a kingdom of justice a kingdom of truth and a kingdom of love,” he said The new altar was the latest part of a two-year-long remodeling process of the church’s interior made possible through the Catholic Strong capital campaign the parish has been able to not only put into place the new altar “Your love of your parish was the air under the wings of our success,” Father Joseph Wallace The Rybacki family – parents Sophie and Drew and children Andrea and Joseph – were among the supportive parish families in attendance Fourteen-year-old Joseph assisted Bishop Sullivan as an altar server Older sister Andrea said she was happy to be reminded “of the importance of Jesus in our lives as we come together to celebrate the Eucharist especially during the Advent and Christmas seasons the Bishop sprinkled the congregation with water Bishop Sullivan also invoked the prophets Noah uniting past and present in God’s covenant of salvation and the unseen that is going on,” Sophie Rybacki said Further solidifying the bond between the faithful and its Catholic forebears was a first class relic of Saint Vincent Pallotti which was placed into the altar by Bishop Sullivan the Pallottines began ministering to Catholics in Atco The relic was made possible with the help of Brother James Beamesderfer rector of Bishop Eustace Preparatory School in Pennsauken “It’s an honor that our founder will be remembered and venerated in a place that is the work of our men,” Brother Beamesderfer said Bishop Sullivan and the community made their way to the parish’s new outdoor Saint Rita of Cascia grotto where he blessed the dedicated space for all to bring their concerns to the ATCO EnPower and Shell are 50/50 partners in the Atlas Carbon Storage Hub, a release said, and the first phase of the project is planned to be operational by 2028 anchored by CO2 volumes from Shell’s Polaris carbon capture project. “Carbon capture and storage is a critical component of our successful energy future. ATCO EnPower is actively working across all aspects of the energy transition value chain, and collaborative efforts with government, our partners and local communities have been instrumental in advancing this initiative,” ATCO EnPower COO Bob Myles said in a statement. Future development of Atlas, subject to a future investment decision, will be aimed at meeting both ATCO EnPower and Shell’s carbon storage needs with remaining capacity available for third-party emitters through open access, the release said. “The Atlas Hub will leverage the lessons learned from Quest CCS, which was built and is operated by Shell. Kiefer has more than 40 years of professional experience managing and operating critical infrastructure He spent nearly his entire career with the ATCO group of companies and as one of the corporation’s key executives “shaped some of the company’s most transformative initiatives in recent memory.” He was instrumental in the strategic divestiture of ATCO’s retail energy business in 2003 He also oversaw the construction and early energization of Canadian Utilities’ award-winning Alberta PowerLine project — the longest 500 kilovolt (kV) AC transmission line in Canada.” Before becoming president and CEO of Canadian Utilities Kiefer served as the managing director for ATCO’s Utilities Business Group where he oversaw the operations of ATCO Gas along with subsidiaries Northland Utilities Limited and ATCO Electric Yukon He also oversaw the formation and operations of ATCO Energy Services and served as chief information officer for ATCO Group for more than 11 years The retired executive was recommended by a volunteer advisory group consisting of University of Calgary president Dr board chair Dawn Farrell and ATCO Energy Systems chief operating officer Wayne Stensby “We believe Siegfried Kiefer’s extensive experience ensures the review will be thorough and provide actionable recommendations,” Farrell said That report outlined a series of factors leading to the break, most notably micro-cracks along the outer mortar layer of the pipe. Those tiny fractures allowed soil with abnormally high chloride concentrations to contact and corrode the inner pipe’s reinforcement wires, causing 200 of them to snap, weakening the feeder main’s integrity. Kiefer said Thursday he has perused that report, but hasn’t read all 600 pages in detail. “The report is obviously an engineering-based report on what transpired to cause the failure,” he said. “I’m interested in what transpired, but our study is going to look more into why that occurred and why it occurred without knowledge earlier, so that something could have been done to prevent it from occurring and causing that kind of impact to the citizens of Calgary.” His first job will be to recruit a panel of senior industry leaders to further study what caused the feeder main to fail, as well as the city’s response and what changes are needed to prevent another significant water main failure in the future. The review will be independent of city involvement and is expected to take upwards of a year to complete. “I wouldn’t have taken on this role if I wasn’t given independence because I really don’t need to do the work at the direction of anyone else,” he said. “It’s very important for the citizens of Calgary to understand this panel will be indeed independent of any influence from the city or city management. We have free reign to design our study, obtain whatever information we need and make our recommendations completely independent of any kind of city interference.” Once the panel is finalized, Kiefer will guide the review process and oversee the final report, which will be shared with Calgarians. transmission or republication strictly prohibited This website uses cookies to personalize your content (including ads), and allows us to analyze our traffic. In January, a collision between a US Army Black Hawk helicopter and a commercial jet near Washington's Ronald Reagan National Airport killed 67 people While investigations are underway reports have indicated that understaffing at the control tower could be a factor Such incidents underscore the critical need for well-trained air traffic controllers – a need that is only set to grow With Changi Airport’s Terminal 5 expected to open in the mid-2030s increasing the airport’s capacity by more than 50 per cent the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) anticipates a 40 per cent rise in demand for ATCOs Ms Ilyana joined CAAS in 2012 after discovering the role at a university job fair A National University of Singapore graduate with a degree in project management she had no aviation background and thought she would not qualify for the job But this was not the case – CAAS welcomes applicants from any academic discipline said director of air traffic services Vincent Hwa The key qualities of an air traffic controller extend beyond academic credentials They are selected for qualities like sharp cognitive skills spatial awareness and the ability to stay calm under pressure Of the 1,000 to 1,200 applications received each year only 50 to 60 are selected as probationary ATCOs New recruits undergo about 18 months of rigorous training at the Singapore Aviation Academy on-the-job training and a final validation check ATCOs are eventually streamed into one of three roles: area managing aircraft during the final climb and the cruising phase She is also responsible for assigning safe cruising flight levels to aircraft and coordinating handovers between regional air traffic control centres Approach ATCOs handle aircraft transitioning between cruise and landing or take-off and are also responsible for lining up aircraft for landing at Changi Airport while aerodrome ATCOs oversee air traffic at Changi Airport and Seletar Airport landings and ground movements within the airport area Remaining calm is one of the toughest aspects of training “You have to calculate a lot of things really fast and accurately You need to know which information is crucial at that point of time.”  The oldest ATCO is 67 years old and the youngest 24 years old CNA was given rare access to Ms Ilyana’s workplace at the Singapore Air Traffic Control Centre (SATCC) An ATCO's shift typically lasts eight-and-a-half hours ATCOs attend a detailed briefing on factors like weather and expected air traffic conditions where one of them communicates directly with pilots and the other is an assistant The control room hums with activity: alerts sound phones ring and ATCOs are locked in concentration pilots may request to deviate from their flight path and she will have to coordinate this with other controllers Communicating with multiple pilots concurrently can be intense and stressful “People forget that there's only one controller and that we could be communicating to about 20 pilots at the same time.”   controllers are required to take a 30-minute break every 60 to 90 minutes they may rest in the lounge or grab a snack and use their phones which are off-limits inside the operations room to avoid distractions Even water bottles must be kept in designated caddies next to their workstations to prevent spills near equipment Despite having to juggle tasks and keep a laser-like focus during work “I love it because of the thrill and dynamic environment,” she said “It's intellectually stimulating and at the end of the day it gives me an immense sense of satisfaction.”  also appreciates that the job doesn't follow her home the time we have with our family is purely quality time,” she said That all air traffic controllers work in the iconic tower at Changi Airport Only aerodrome ATCOs are at the tower,” she said Approach ATCOs and area ATCOs like Ms Ilyana work at the SATCC which is not in Changi Airport but near Changi Village CAAS actively reaches out to students and mid-career jobseekers through career fairs He added that there is also a clear career progression pathway and development opportunities for ATCOs They have opportunities for specialisation in areas such as training and search and rescue operations CAAS has implemented mental health resources fatigue risk management protocols and family-friendly policies Mr Hwa said air traffic management will increasingly be supported by technology such as artificial intelligence and machine learning These tools will help with "conflict detection" and trajectory-based operations Space-based communications and surveillance systems will also enhance global air traffic monitoring “Air traffic control remains a highly complex function with heavy responsibilities given its safety implications,” said Mr Hwa “We do not at this point envisage that technology would completely replace the human.”  Get our pick of top stories and thought-provoking articles in your inbox Stay updated Ken Richardson of Vantage says “Vantage is exciting to help the owners of Brotherton Brewery meet their goals” I had a chance recently to chat with two of the Brotherton Brewery partners brothers Keith and Dan Oriente… about the plans for the brewery It’s business as usual at Brotherton Brewing The real estate/business listing is simply “Exploring Options” while Keith and Dan are the most visible day-to-day owner/operators of the brewery the full ownership group consists of five partners… and recently discussions amongst the partners included thoughts on the long-term direction for the brewery it was clear to me that the brothers truly love the brewery It’s been a key part of their lives since 2015… even as they both continue with full-time “day” jobs outside of the brewery management and sales responsibilities… and absolutely rely on an amazing team at the brewery to keep the beer brewing Keith focuses on everyday operations which ranges from sweeping the floors to the brewery accounting and even helping out with deliveries and festivals Dan focuses on the sales and distribution aspects such as inventory coordination with distributors and sales personnel they rely heavily on an amazing staff such as brewer Ryan as well as the full staff of beertenders and more… to make not only delicious craft beers I first visited Brotherton Brewing a few months after their opening and was “blown away” by the space As I sat in the tasting room taking my first sip of a fresh Brotherton Beer I remember immediately texting in my guy-friends-chat about the new brewery “guys you have to check this place out!” Being the nose-to-the-ground journalist that I am I visited Brotherton yesterday to find a well packed tasting room As mentioned Brotherton Brewing was created within the walls of a former Waterford/Atco Firehouse… Station 232 to be exact The Waterford Fire Department was incorporated in 1914 and they utilized the Atco Ave Firehouse building up until 2018 when the fire department relocated to a new location The building made for a perfect brewery space where it’s higher ceilings are perfect to support the necessary taller brewing equipment The Brotherton team chose to put the beer brewing aspects at the front of the of the building where the large glass “fire engine” garage doors are located The tasting room is in the back and also benefits from the higher ceilings Locating the tasting room in the rear allowed them to connect the space to the open “backyard” area which extends the customer tasting room space as well as positions customers closer to parking I have been to Brotherton Brewing a few times since they opened including a return visit yesterday… and now writing this article and talking to Keith and Dan I’m going to be stopping back again very soon Brotherton Brewing2208 Atco AveAtco New Jersey Brighter Future For Digital Signs in Washington Twp
