The premise of Deep House: The Gayest Love Story Ever Told is simple interwoven narratives: a sprawling memoir of his love story with his long-term partner and a historic overview of the complicated and winding debate over gay marriage exploring queer history through a more personal lens Deep House is more than a historic archive or a love-obsessed confession It’s not even an argument for marriage—gay or otherwise Deep House is an argument for love unbridled by restraints: “Our issue Lin reframes the narrative surrounding gay marriage through the lens of immigration Discourse surrounding the pros and cons of gay marriage as an objective for the queer liberation movement are not uncommon although Lin’s contribution to the conversation resists the binary entirely speaking clearly about the topic of gay marriage while moving beyond the vision of Pinterest board wedding ceremonies Lin expertly draws connections between the citizenship rights that come with marriage and the insufficiency of second-class citizenship He does this by offering his own story with his long-term partner from the United Kingdom who spent many years in the United States living undocumented largely due to the inaccessibility of marriage It’s a complicated story—one framed by the context of an insufficient state (that is if a state ever could be properly sufficient) Lin finds little comfort in theory: “It didn’t seem like we had the time to wait for the dismantling of the systemic suppression of sexual variation let alone for national borders to be abolished How are we to embody and advance freedom if our instructions remain contained to broad platitudes It’s a critique that Lin is unafraid of making in Deep House—and a pattern that he is committed to breaking from Lin’s triumph in Deep House may in fact be its eventual realization as a guide Queer theory may have been far ahead of he and his partner but in detailing Lin’s own love-obsessed resistance among the stories of countless other queer couples doing the same (loving one another he offers instruction for how queer people today might commit themselves to the act of loving even when it may feel as though there’s no place for that love to settle Lin’s lesson for us all could not come at a more urgent time Reading Deep House while the United States reckons with the tightening grip of a new Trump administration made the text feel particularly affecting These last few months have been marked by the arrest and deportation of dissenters pointed attacks against protections for vulnerable communities and increasing steps towards authoritarian rule—and queer and trans folks have been at the center of many of these attacks It’s something that queer folks know well—abandonment This is on display throughout Deep House—which primarily takes place between the 1990s and the 2010s Lin navigates an evolving landscape of policies regarding sanctuary cities and more—each interpersonal dilemma faced by the couple is grounded in something real it’s a struggle in deciding whether or not they can go to the hospital It’s a situation that is relevant today, just as much as it was yesterday. There is a queer inheritance at play here—and Deep House demonstrates that what we’ve inherited isn’t all bad. In Lin and his partner’s case, wanting to be free from fear—fear of separation and fear of the prohibition of marriage, and therefore citizenship rights—it isn’t the Supreme Court nor is it a reliance on imagining that protects them it is community that does keep them safe—and it can keep us safe today It’s also true in our case today—with escalating attacks on the queer community manifesting in violence threats to the legal protections that we do have Deep House argues for us to not wait for the law to catch up to us but to instead love anyways despite the threat and to do what we can for one another to protect it—even if that fighting must happen in darkness for now “At night in their invisibility the faggots remember freedom.” The above quote does not come from Lin’s Deep House—but rather from Larry Mitchell’s seminal The Faggots & Their Friends Between Revolutions a lyrical manifesto written in the fiery years following the 1969 Stonewall Uprising While Lin does assert in Deep House that “shadows are a very different place to choose to be than to be forced back into,” it is still the shadows where the story ultimately takes place and where queer folks are best able to dream with our eyes open This is true—whether it be the San Francisco apartment where Lin and his partner made a home off the beaten path where the gay man cruises or the Texas home where an intruding police raid made way for gay sex to be decriminalized nationwide in 2003 It’s in the shadows—in their invisibility—that we can dream beyond borders and instead towards something truly liberatory: love Henry Hicks IV (he/him) is a Washington, D.C.-based writer and organizer. Furtuna skincare brand sold 81 Somerset Lane in what appears to be an off-market sale on March 19 It has not been reported in the press until now Compass agents Mary and Brent Gullixson represented the buyers when the Luczos bought the 2-acre property for $12.95 million in September 2013 The Gullixsons appear to have been the listing agents this time around as they produced a marketing booklet for the Menlo Circus Club home They declined to confirm if they represented the sellers or say if they also represented the buyers is the manager of the San Francisco-based LLC He did not immediately reply to a request for comment philanthropists and families with multigenerational wealth.” The home had been “privately and quietly marketed” to a small group of agents and buyers for many months before the sale The Circus Club location and lot size was a large part of the appeal to buyers She said sales at this price point are rare because even high-end Atherton buyers are “most comfortable” somewhere in the $30-million range “They are capable of going up to the fifties “It’s usually for a larger lot in a good location.”  The Luczos demoed the pre-existing property shortly after they bought it The couple sold another Atherton home for $16.5 million in 2018 as well as a Los Gatos home for $9.5 million that same year SIGN UPThe main home on Somerset Lane has six bedrooms seven full bathrooms and three half bathrooms in about 16,000 square feet including a professional recording studio and theater designed by the same firm that created the Jazz at Lincoln Center Concert Hall There is also a fitness center with a steam shower an outdoor kitchen with built-in pizza oven and barbeque attached entertainment cabana and garages to accommodate up to eight cars one-bath guest house has 1,100 square feet and a full kitchen and a 1,250-square-foot library and office building has a half-bath and kitchenette and is landscaped with hundreds of palm trees The Atherton ultra-high-end market has been moving briskly this spring, agents said, with several sales of new builds in the $30- million-plus range Compass agent Omar Maissen said he had seen “unprecedented movement” among the ultra-high- net- worth set pointing to Bay Area-centered venture capital funding for one key reason why “The high-end market is firing now,” he said The Somerset Lane sale is another “sign that something is happening,” he said, as well as a great “harbinger” for the $55 million co-listing he has been marketing in Atherton since last fall “Luxury buyers from around the world are looking to invest their money in Bay Area real estate and nowhere more so and hotter than Atherton,” he said I wrote a column in which I stated that the easiest gobbler to call is one with a wingman often will race each other toward what they think is a hen I experienced the exact opposite of that scenario Legal shooting time had already arrived as I walked down a grassy hillside toward my blind which was tucked under an oak-lined ridge about 75 yards from a small creek that meanders through a pasture Not five minutes had passed before a hen launched off her roost and landed just a few feet from my decoys but nevertheless I reached for my box call and made a few sleepy-sounding yelps She filled the valley with yelps and clucks Her calls were better than any I would make but his frenetic gobbling made it clear he had flown down and was racing through the woods toward me and my noisy feathered friend I shifted my chair to the left and got ready to shoot and she trotted off to meet her unseen suitor Shortly after she disappeared over a wooded hilltop Whatever took place on the other side of the hill likely was not suitable for young viewers when I caught movement from the corner of my right eye strolled past my blind and was moving toward my decoys so I waited until the blind blocked me from the gobbler's view After perhaps two minutes that seemed like hours I finally peered around the wall of the blind The gobbler was 50 yards away and still moving north and within a few minutes another hen joined her picking at the wet grass and milling aimlessly around my decoys walking along a fence on the west edge of the valley When I cranked out a series of yelps on my box call slow walk toward me and my collection of hens and decoys and he was at least 100 yards away when he stopped but never closed the gap between himself and the hens but he never gobbled and didn't take a single step their way They turned their backs on the gobbler and strolled away up the hill toward where my truck was parked The gobbler stopped strutting to watch their departure and I dared hope that he would follow them and perhaps drift into range then looked back to see what the tom would do He galloped to the creek's edge and hopped over it and from there it was a quick 40-yard dash to my decoys and when he slammed on the brakes next to the hen decoy The bird proved to be a 24-pounder with a 10-inch beard but its spurs were clearly those of a 2-year-old He likely was just a few days into his first active breeding season Why had this gobbler been so reluctant to approach what looked like three hens loudly aggressive gobbler I'd heard earlier was the “boss” tom in the area while the bird I bagged and the one that had quietly fled were both inexperienced and sub-dominant They were wary that the bigger tom might be around they also were intimidated by multiple hens Eric Atherton is a Post Bulletin outdoors columnist He can be reached at of the Alameda neighborhood A $32 million Atherton listing sold for $100,000 over the asking price after multiple offers came in for the “sexy” new-build property ten-bathroom from Alamo-based Ony Homes set a new record for a one-acre property in Atherton’s West of the Alameda neighborhood but he really nailed it,” she said of Ony founder Mark Cherno even for Atherton’s extremely high end market agreed buyer’s agent Nathalie de Saint Andrieu of Christie’s International Sereno the homes are beautiful but usually they don’t do fully imported Italian cabinetry They normally don’t go to that extent,” she said De Saint Andrieu declined to name her clients but said they were a young family who most recently lived in London and own several homes They plan to make the Atherton home their primary residence They beat out another offer after coming in second in the initial round of bidding “They really wanted it and could not be more happy,” de Saint Andrieu said It’s unusual for homes in the ultraluxury price bracket to get multiple offers and go into contract within a month of hitting the market; another home in Atherton had been quietly listed for months before selling at $51.5 million the highest price sale in the Bay Area so far this year McCain was the one who found the property at 94 Melanie Lane and showed it to Cherno SIGN UPThough Cherno has built several luxury homes in and around Alamo including some custom work for celebrity clients but the “Press” section of the Ony website links to stories about an Alamo home formerly owned by Warriors star Steph Curry as well as one about the Bay Area home of retired Warrior Andre Iguodala The Atherton property first came to market as just dirt with approved permits in 2023 and an asking price of $25 million it returned to market mid-construction asking $32 million given that most Atherton buyers already own one very nice homes and don’t have to make a move unless they are wowed “Atherton is really a very finished product market,” McCain said Cherno is a “high-end luxury finish aficionado” who traveled internationally to select just the right finishes like the Armani fabric for the movie theater more LA-inspired take on design than other Atherton developers “He brought a lot of the sexy to Atherton and it was a very different product than Atherton is used to,” she said The buyers had been in the market for some time and not seeing the level of construction they wanted They were considering a custom build when the Melanie Lane house came on the market completed last month and immediately knew the home was “perfect” for them as soon as they saw it they also loved the “super private” location on a cul de sac They were also drawn to the wellness features of the home like a spa with dry stone and infrared heat and multiple fountains indoors and out “making beautiful noise,” she said is large and has floor-to-ceiling glass walls in many rooms and the yard and pool were also just right for the family Cherno is planning to buy more Atherton sites after this sale “The price point in Atherton allows a luxury builder to go all the way — if they’re not afraid,” she said and what looks to be several more months of convalescence have left me with way too much time on my hands “Doom scrolling” on Facebook helps pass an hour or two each day and right now my feed is full of turkey hunting videos I must note the big gap between reality and what one finds online If you're a relative novice in the turkey woods you'll protect your own sanity by not going overboard watching how “experts” do it Full disclosure: I'm not a great turkey hunter and any success I enjoy is due to persistence it took four years for me to bag my first gobbler Since then I've witnessed hundreds of spring sunrises with a shotgun on my lap taking 20 gobblers myself (including a couple with a bow) and guiding less-experienced buddies to eight more the memories of which occasionally keep me awake at night I can count on one hand the number of times a roosted bird gobbled at me flew down and immediately strutted to my decoys My usual experience is that gobblers put on a great concert from the roost but a gobbler with a harem isn't going to abandon his lady friends to look for you Feel your heart race every time a tom booms away in response to your soft yelps But don't blame yourself when he flies down and walks away — and don't chase him Your best bet is to stay put and hope he gets lonely in an hour or two Videos show gobblers reacting as if they'd never seen a decoy before — or a real hen for that matter many of them labeled “Coming in hot!” that show multiple gobblers racing in to violently assault a decoy I'm not saying such behavior doesn't happen I haven't spent top dollar for the best decoys on the market jakes and even full-body mounts of an actual hen and a strutting tom I've had birds strut right up to the decoys and pose while I drew a bead But other outcomes have been far more common I've had gobblers strut into view 100 yards away catch a glimpse of my decoys and immediately flee I've also had countless birds “hang up” out of gun range I now set up in a corner with limited visibility I want any approaching gobbler to be curious even if he immediately slams on the brakes I've been known to leave my fake birds in the truck Then there's the matter of noise and movement you can get away with some whispering and shifting in a blind Turkeys have astonishing vision and hearing and even the slightest movement will catch their attention — which will leave you kicking yourself I'd argue against letting camera work influence your hunt When that gobbler gives you a clear shot at 35 yards Don't wait for him to put on a good show for your GoPro or for your buddy to get zoomed in with his phone Eric Atherton is an outdoors writer for the Post Bulletin An apparently Bay Area-based con artist was on the verge of scamming an elderly Atherton man out of $15,000 but fortunately his caregiver and family intervened and the would-be con artist was taken into custody until a caregiver and the man’s daughter were able to intervene and put the swindle to a halt telling the man that “funds had been transferred out of his PayPal account without authorization,” according to the Atherton Police Department and a woman called him posing as a PayPal representative She convinced him to withdraw $15,000 out of his bank account to supposedly pay for the unauthorized withdrawal and instructed him to give that money to a representative that would come to his house “Fortunately, an alert caregiver contacted the elderly resident’s daughter who contacted the Atherton Police,” the City of Atherton said in a statement “Our officers immediately responded to the location intercepted the female suspect and took her into custody without incident.” The suspect is not named in the announcement But it sounds like she was apprehended at his home Law enforcement suggests not for Excellence in TeachingBust of George Atherton in the Old Main lobby. Credit: Patrick Mansell / Penn State. Creative Commons — Six Penn State faculty members have received the 2025 George W assistant teaching professor of electrical engineering and computer science in the College of Engineering; Lori Gravish Hurtack associate teaching professor of kinesiology in the College of Health and Human Development; John Craig Hammond associate professor of history at Penn State New Kensington; Kevin Maxwell associate teaching professor of mathematics at Penn State Fayette associate professor of biology at Penn State Hazleton; and Maria Yoder assistant teaching professor of nursing in the Ross and Carol Nese College of Nursing named after Penn State’s seventh president honors excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level Conejo-Lopez said teaching is one of her greatest joys She loves the field of computer science and said students are always helping her find ways to better understand and break down complex concepts It’s the two-way learning process that she finds the most rewarding “When I took my first two programming courses most of my peers had prior programming experience and were already programming competitively had neither owned a computer before nor had any programming background so it was easy to ‘fall between the cracks,’” Conejo-Lopez said “That experience made me deeply committed to ensuring that no student is left behind One size does not fit all: Because students don’t all learn the same way She’s always using multiple examples and walking students through the theoretical concepts “I provide a variety of teaching approaches so that everyone can find something that works for them,” she said Listen and empathize: If students feel welcome and that their opinions are valid they’re more likely to ask for clarification when they’re confused Embrace change: Computer programming is constantly evolving She stays current on the changes and adapts her lesson plans to suit this ever-changing world as a more diverse group of people — and larger numbers of students — join this expanding field “With more students curious about learning how to write computer programs teaching large-enrollment courses can be a challenge but I see it as an opportunity to build a strong sense of community,” Conejo-Lopez said which she said helps her become a more dynamic instructor She frequently attends workshops and seminars to learn new digital tools enhance student engagement and learn new teaching strategies She said their critical feedback allows her to know what facilitates or obstructs their learning “Nurturing and understanding the community from the start brings students and course staff together to advocate and support each other and it allows me to constantly seek areas of improvement that continue to shape my teaching philosophy to become a better instructor for all of my students,” she said One of Conejo-Lopez’s former students said she represents the best of educators She said Conejo-Lopez helped her the most when she was struggling and helped her find a way to succeed “I cannot think of any way that a teacher can be better than Griselda She constantly inspires me with her tenacity and drive especially as a woman in a male-dominated field,” the former student said “While I experience imposter syndrome due to the gender imbalance she is always there to ensure that I belong in this major and that I deserve to follow my passions and she deserves to be recognized for all that she does.” Gravish Hurtack said teaching is an art She said the key to fostering learning is mentorship She sparks conversations with students that often pique their motivation She’s a firm believer in one-on-one mentoring sessions and makes time to meet all of her students for these discussions on everything from course assignments to career goals “These sessions allow me to approach each meeting with an open mind She remembers a time where a former student approached her and thanked her for never giving up on him The student was told his GPA was too low for graduate school but he persevered “Words are not merely words; they can either hinder or inspire,” Gravish Hurtack said “It is not the events in our lives that define us but how we react to and learn from them that shapes who we become.” These continuous contacts with former students are nothing new to Gravish Hurtack She wants her kinesiology students to be lifelong learners and remains ready to help them navigate the process “My philosophy of teaching is to mentor undergraduates for a lifetime I have provided my cellphone number to every student in lectures and on the syllabus since day one,” Gravish Hurtack said “Throughout my decades-long teaching career and requests for meetups with alumni to discuss their successes seek career advice and extend invitations to celebrate their achievements I had the privilege of attending a live Zoom white coat ceremony for an alum pursuing a medical degree These shared moments are what I call life’s ‘golden nuggets.’” Her goal is that each student reaches the highest level of education Her holistic teaching approach to this end includes discussions she’s able to inspire curiosity and compassion Her courses frequently address global learning professional development and health disparities Gravish Hurtack also uses these connections with alumni to put students on the right career path She collaborates with former students to stay current and enhance learning objectives “What defines me as an educator is my passion for bringing creative ideas to life that can enhance the fundamentals of student learning outreach and humanitarianism,” Gravish Hurtack said A former student said Gravish Hurtack was instrumental in helping her succeed in and out of the classroom The student secured an internship with the Nittany Lions football team and said Gravish Hurtack shadowed her along the way “Professor Gravish Hurtack deeply cares about the well-being of her students and their careers academics and professional involvement,” a former student said "She pushes her students to be the best that they can be and provide them with amazing opportunities while maintaining a personal and professional relationship with each of them Being a student under her has made me excel because you want to submit your best work to not only get the grade but to make her proud.” As a faculty member at a Commonwealth Campus Hammond offers general education courses to a diverse group of students with various backgrounds He said his teaching is informed by his deep commitment to what it means to receive a Penn State education where students leave with a well-rounded background and a deeper understanding of the humanities the best part of my job is watching first- and second-year students be transformed by learning; by seeing them accomplish more than they ever thought possible in history classes; and by imbuing in many of them an appreciation for the humanities and general education at Penn State,” Hammond said His courses aren’t catered to history majors they’re designed for students enrolled in general education classes as they navigate their paths toward their degrees savvy and skeptical 18- to 20-year-olds that a history class has something valuable to teach them,” Hammond said “I respect my students and their skepticism about the value of a history course and general education and we use that to examine how and why a general education history class might benefit them as students and as human beings trying to navigate their way through a confused and confusing 21st century.”  His courses give students a basic comprehension of history but also emphasize that thinking is critical to understanding analyzing and explaining historical changes His goal isn’t to get students to remember key dates and moments in history but rather to understand the causes and consequences of significant historical changes and continuities “Regardless of the specific topic in any of my classes how to construct arguments using evidence and analysis and then to consider the significance of their claims,” Hammond said we remain focused on the humanities part of history as we try to understand how people in the past understood their worlds tried to make sense of them and then acted on it history courses teach us empathy and humility.”  His courses are challenging and require that students develop and exercise critical reading Students can see the value in approach to history which stresses the skills that students will use in both their upper-level courses and in their careers “It is an honor and a privilege to serve Penn State students,” Hammond said I remain committed to providing all of my students with first-rate courses and a world-class Penn State education.”  Students said Hammond creates an environment where they are encouraged to ask questions and take an active role in the learning process They said he’s someone who’s always available in and out of the classroom “He creates a welcoming and inclusive classroom environment where students are not just permitted but encouraged to ask questions and share their ideas regarding the material,” a former student said “He is an extraordinary historian and educator who has made a significant impact on the lives of his students expertise and dedication to teaching has put him on a pedestal above all else.” Maxwell has taught math at nearly all levels He said joining Fayette more than 25 years ago was a time for him to learn He was schooled in the old school methods of teaching but soon learned of a more expansive and effective approach “With the help of this community of co-workers and students I expanded my boundaries as an educator and a scholar and abandoned the instructional model of ‘teacher as knowledge giver,’” Maxwell said my guiding principle is understanding students’ diverse needs and doing everything possible to nurture their engagement and learning.” To drive his students to become critical thinkers he uses techniques based on problem-solving He also relies on some old tricks he learned in the middle school classroom “Much of what I do is based on the constructivist classroom a model that I first used as a middle-school teacher and this student-centered approach to teaching is apropos for college students as well,” Maxwell said my calculus students apply differentiation to identify the best seat in a movie theater my statistics students enact human histograms to ‘become’ the data and the graph my trigonometry students perform the ‘wave’ to discover behaviors about the sine curve and my finite math students search through their own closets to determine the number of outfit combinations that each student can create Experience has taught me that students need to be active in their own learning processes and I develop each of my courses accordingly.” He’s always learning from his students and creates a welcoming environment where their views are valued That allows him to get the qualitative data he needs to know what’s working best and to cast the widest net in the classroom remote and hybrid classrooms and even uses tools such as videos to enhance learning He also wants his students to see math isn’t just about the numbers The data exposes real challenges and can offer effective solutions solving real-world problems with skills they learned in the classroom “Because teaching and learning both reach beyond the classroom my students have also performed service-learning projects to develop understanding of course topics by practicing what they are learning,” Maxwell said statistics students completed data analyses for a local Legal Aid Society and calculus students tutored clients appointed through Goodwill Industries.” Former students said Maxwell is known for his out-of-the-box approach to teaching math so they appreciate his ability for using real-world examples and explaining how math will be useful in their careers “We left the classroom and launched Barbie dolls with rubber bands We used trials and the linear regression equation to calculate what would happen next,” a former student said “I remember how excited everyone was to get out of the classroom and participate in a real-life activity using what we learned he used real-life stories and intertwined characteristics of health care to keep us interested.” Schall said she’s honored to be meeting students at such a critical time in their lives They’re being challenged in this exciting time and as they navigate a path to their future Her teaching philosophy centers on creating learning experiences and opportunities She accomplishes this by first creating a rapport with her students by building their confidence helping them see the beauty of human diversity and responding to their learning needs “I am often disheartened by the number of students who come into my classes with a negative perception of biology I have learned through conversations with my students that previous experiences are powerful in shaping one’s current perception,” Schall said “While I admit that I teach challenging science courses I still believe that concepts can be presented in a way that overcomes learning barriers; challenging does not need to mean abstract and unrelatable students can better relate to the importance of concepts and become more invested in understanding why science is important.” Her courses address the relevant applications of biology features a lab experience where students are tasked with solving real-world scientific problems students address a threat from a single-celled pathogen infecting fish in a local waterway “They learn to be diagnosticians and then apply those skills to their own inquiry-based experiment they not only understand important principles but can connect those principles with how they are used in scientific disciplines,” Schall said “I am inspired every year when students reach the end of their research project and connect the dots between the class material and their very own investigation.” gives her opportunities to discuss with her students how genetic traits make up a diverse human world Her students explore what makes us different “I challenge my students to embrace differences and recognize not only the importance of genetic variability in humans “Students are then tasked to research and present a genetic condition to the class I often find that students have the courage to talk about their own genetic traits or those of family members I work to create a classroom environment that promotes discussion I ask students to consider multiple perspectives in science even if they do not agree with those perspectives.” Students praised Schall’s ability to show the human side of biology and bring core concepts to life through real-world examples adding that it helps her stay current and relevant in a rapidly expanding field Schall is her hands-on experience with her subject she has a more developed understanding of her topics and can explain things from a less textbook-based perspective,” a former student said She understands multiple broad subjects on a delicate level which I believe to be an excellent trait to have provided herself with this knowledge.” Yoder said her goal as a nurse educator is to see students progress into detail-oriented professionals who provide high-quality Her teaching process is guided by the nurse code of ethics: “the nurse practices with compassion and respect for the inherent dignity worth and unique attributes that 2025 is the year of the belt drive.  It's what Atherton Bikes refers to as “The Ultimate Downhill Bike,” although outside of that circle it will be known as the A.200.G.  Teased last week but now public knowledge, the A.200.G is built off the Atherton Bikes A.200 Dh bike platform but features a gearbox drivetrain and a frame made of 3D-printed lugs and carbon-bonded tubes Although we don’t have all the details on this new bike since it has only recently been cleared for prototype testing for the upcoming season we have been treated to an insightful video that follows the team during development sharing the athletes' initial impressions during early season test rides.  Charlie Hatton Testing the new Atherton Bikes A.200.G Charlie Hatton and Gee Atherton shared opinions It’s really good; it just sticks to the ground but holds you up more in the travel It's just so good," said Gee excitedly after returning from a muddy and wet test ride “Things just feel so calm and composed While we didn't get to hear impressions from Rachel Atherton, there is no doubt that she will be right at home on this new platform, and we might even see her claim the 100,000 Euro Prize for winning a World Cup on a Gates Belt-driven bike.   Watch the entire film below and learn more about the incredible process behind designing and testing a bike aimed at winning World Cup races.  Atherton Bikes is working on a 3D-printed DH prototype that could shake up one of the first bikes they ever made – a new gearbox-driven A.200.G There aren’t many are now quite a few more concrete details on the new prototype mountain bike besides the name and its implications But that and some social media teases give us a nice sneak peek at what we might find on the DH World Cup this season… Update: Atherton has given a pretty detailed behind-the-scenes look at the prototype gearbox DH bike project sharing a detailed 20-minute video telling the first part of the A.200.G’s development and its initial testing The prototype downhill precursor to the A.200 was the first bike the Athertons teased when they announced their new bike brand in 2019 Custom 3D-printed titanium lugs bonded to carbon tubes it’s no surprise that a big travel downhill bike is again the first to see big innovative development But Atherton has revealed that it’s still an A.200 And it is an A Range bike – their “pinnacle of engineering excellence” – featuring carbon tubes bonded to their 3D-printed titanium lugs That also means 22 standard frame sizes will be offered A Range also means the more complex 6-bar DW6 linkage designed by Dave Weagle Also confirmed by a quick shot in the Atherton teaser of the left seatstay getting bonded into the non-driveside dropout and higher up in the story) and the ends of the stays in this fresh-out-of-the-printer block seem pretty much identical to the current A.200 The chainstay yoke exhibits revised shaping to clear the new gearbox yoke and the bike’s lower short link But it still has the same 2-pivot layout for the DW6 suspension design the big change is the gearbox yoke/mount/lug or whatever we want to call the replacement for the bottom bracket lug That’s the tallest piece in the 3D-print and the blurry element the Atherton engineers are holding in the lede image It’s quite a complex part to hand the gearbox under the frame by six bolts while being bonded with double-lap shear joints onto the carbon downtube & seattube and providing the three of the lower pivot points in the DW6 suspension layout but it looks like this Atherton A.200.G is designed to work with Pinion’s category-leading C-line gearbox This gearbox dummy confirms the prototype bike’s name the glimpses of the gearbox itself both feature a Gates centerline-style belt cog this Atherton DH prototype will feature a belt tensioner The reasoning for a gearbox DH bike remains the same for Atherton as it has for Gamux & Intense, and even something as disparate as the Surly Moonlander No derailleur getting bashed off a passing rock perfect shifts in the harshest riding conditions Better weight distribution – lower & more central center of gravity And ultimately more ability to tune suspension around a bike’s sprung weight “For almost 20 years as they travelled to World Cups Atherton Bikes’ CEO Dan Brown and their mechanics dreamed and planned for the ultimate DH bike to take to the races… and more often than not a belt-driven gearbox bike would be high up in the wish-list In 2024 the opportunity arose to partner with Gates Carbon Drive to make the dream a reality Atherton’s Additive Manufacturing (AM) technology is perfect for allowing them to test and improve things really quickly so driven by the passion and commitment of Dave Weagle and designers Scott Aisthorpe and Will Carne the team have achieved a pretty good first prototype within months This candid film is part 1 of a series and documents the start of that process… from a titanium build plate to the first week of ride-testing subscribe to Atherton’s youtube to follow the bike’s development in real time.” Atherton Bikes is still only teasing individual elements of their A.200.G DH prototype And just an hourglass emoji to tease us that it’s coming soon So we expect it’ll be quite a while until this thing makes it into production But with the 2025 UCI Mountain Bike World Series set to kick off with a World Cup return to Bielsko-Biała we’ll be in the ground trying to get some closer spy shots from the race track We can’t not mention Gee’s latest Ridgeline video even if he’s riding the standard A.200 the renowned mountain bike film series known for capturing some of the most awe-inspiring and high-stakes mountain bike adventures across the globe launches its latest and most ambitious instalment: Ridgeline VI: Kazakhstan the Ridgeline team turned their sights beyond the familiar mountains of Europe Covering an immense 2.7 million square kilometres Kazakhstan is the world’s ninth-largest country a land that demands a new level of preparation and respect Unlike previous projects where the team could adapt quickly Kazakhstan’s vast and remote stretches required far greater planning With long distances between petrol stations and rugged every step of the journey had to be carefully thought out Gee’s journey in Kazakhstan saw him tackling huge natural lines onboard his Atherton Bikes A.200 calling on every inch of travel to soften the rugged desert terrain the experience has redefined the team’s understanding of big mountain riding potential highlighting the delicate balance between ambition and the unforgiving reality of these untouched environments.” AthertonBikes.com Cory Benson is the EU Tech Editor of Bikerumor.com Cory has been writing about The S.170 expanded the Atherton offerings and provided a more industrial version of the Machynlleth-built A.170 enduro bike Although the design and manufacturing approach for the A and S ranges are similar some major differences besides the material allow these bikes to attain a lower price point this new S.150 uses a lugged alloy design using 7075 aluminum for maximum strength to weight 7075 alloy isn’t too common in frame construction because it is notoriously hard to weld The lugged design allows Atherton Bikes to use this incredibly durable alloy for its S series of bikes The S.150 is even EFBE category-five rated This hints at the intended use case for this new bike as Atherton bikes have it aimed more at an enduro/light-duty gravity rig rather than a trail bike similarities with the longer travel S.170 are seen and the DW4 is used again for the S.150 as opposed to the DW6 linkages seen on the carbon-lugged A series The DW4 offers the same proven performance as the more complex DW6 but keeps manufacturing costs down due to its less complex design The compliance of the rear end is further tuned with the use of machined alloy chain and seat stays Atherton Bikes S.150 Frame has a straight thru seat tube allowing for deep dropper insertion The S.150 is available in 12 sizes with 10mm reach increase increments to offer the best possible fit for a wide range of riders A 64.5 head tube angle keeps things predictable across the entire range and the seat tube angle tightens from 74.5 for the smaller sizes to 77.5 for the larger options The S.150 is a mullet-only option and does not utilize the flip chips that the A.150 uses to keep the S.150 as a more practical and affordable choice for a broader group of riders Pairing a smaller rear wheel with the fairly steep seat tube angle keeps the bike climbing efficiently despite the mullet configuration MSRP: US $2,950.61 | €2,787.34 | £2,799.00Ships with a Fox Float X2 Performance MSRP: US$4,742.70 | €4,480.26 | £4,499.00 Fork: Marzocchi Bomber Z1 160mmShock: Fox Float X PerformanceDrivetrain: SRAM N/GX Eagle (GX shifter and rear derailleur, NX 11-50 cassette and crankset)Brakes: Hayes Dominion A4 (200mm (f) / 180mm (r)Wheels: Stans Flow S2 29", 27.5" e-SyncTires: Continental Krypototal Enduro 2.4Atherton Bikes S.150.2 S.150.2MSRP: US$5,796.86 | €5,476.09 | £5,499.00 S.150.1MSRP: $6,323.95 USD | €5,974.01 | £5,999.00 Please upgrade your browser to improve your experience the chef and restaurateur behind MICHELIN-Starred Row on 5 and a whole lot more shares his top London recommendations we ask famous chefs and personalities to tell us all about 'their London' From top tips on where to dine in the city to their personal haunts ranging from bakeries to book shops we’ve got the inside track on London’s premier spots from the people who know it best Atherton is one of that rare breed who are as skilled as a restaurateur as they are a chef – someone who understands the London dining scene better than most he shares his top tips for eating out in the capital Which London restaurants are perfect for a night out with friends? Carey 2025Fresh off an impressive Red Bull Hardline Tasmania run a brand-new aluminum downhill mountain bike The S.200 was first spotted under Gee Atherton at the 2025 Red Bull Hardline Tasmania The S.200 is Atherton Bikes' flagship aluminum DH bike designed for precision performance on race day but it is just as capable in the Bike Park or on steep It features the same advanced lug and tube construction as the A.200 but is made from durable 7075-grade aluminum for a more rugged and utilitarian vibe Dave Weagle's DW4 suspension platform ensures a high-performance rear end with low maintenance - perfectly complementing the S-series' “chuck it in the van and go” riding style The DW6 suspension platform from Dave Weagle is found on the A.200 but moving to a DW4 linkage on the S.200 offers less adjustment and less maintenance 200's lug-and-tube construction offers a wide range of sizes It leverages over twenty years of expertise from elite racing teams to fine-tune performance and bolster rider confidence on the most aggressive trails with reach numbers ranging from 410mm to 520mm in 10mm increments The feeling of the S.200 is slightly tweaked from the A.200 to give it a more lively feel in the bike park and more aggressive DH trails but it still maintains almost identical geometry as the carbon-lugged A.200 except for a slightly steeper seat tube angle.   Designed as a mixed wheel configuration for a 29" front wheel and 27.5" rear wheel or a more lively 27.5" wheel and 26" rear wheel for those who like boosting it in the park The 200mm front and rear suspension travel soaks up rough trails or big hits but offers excellent mid-stroke support and supple small-bump sensitivity.  The S.200 has been subjected to extensive field testing in beautiful locations like Dyfi and Queenstown and some tough challenges have recently been encountered at Red Bull Hardline earning impressive EFBE Tri Test Cat 4 (Enduro) and Cat 5 (Downhill) certifications The S.200 also has a lifetime guarantee for the first owner Atherton Bikes S.200 is a mixed wheel only with 29" front and 27.5 rear wheels We encounter many failures and hear about numerous competitor warranty claims when talking with riders at Dyfi Bike Park or races Our motivation was to ensure that no bike bearing our name would ever experience this,” Gee Atherton explains “By switching from Titanium and Carbon to CNC and extruded aluminum we've made a small compromise in weight and design flexibility but gained greater impact The S.200 is offered in three standard builds: a mini-mullet option for free-riders and prices start at $6,613.95/ £4,999/€6,325.25 for a complete bike The man who tested it at Red Bull Hardline gives the full rundown in this launch video.  the S.200 is only “price ceiling” for AthertonPacific Peninsula Group notched town’s first $30M-plus sale in 2025 Sales of several $30 million-plus Atherton homes by the same builder — Pacific Peninsula Group — may “reset the ceiling” for the nation’s most expensive zip code according to luxury San Francisco Peninsula agents Atherton notched its first $30 million-plus sale recorded in the multiple listing service for 2025: 112 Almendral Ave sold for $33.5 million to Amberhill Trust It was a custom built by Pacific Peninsula Group for the previous owner after he and his wife Linda bought the 1-acre parcel for $8 million in 2018 according to deed records and city permits Compass agents Mary and Brent Gullixson listed the property and did not confirm the identity of the buyer or the seller but Brent said that the custom home’s high price speaks to “the buyer’s desire to buy a new home in order to avoid the time it takes to build.”  “With such a low number of new homes in the pipeline prices for new construction have reached a new high,” he added Pacific Peninsula Group quietly sold 358 Walsh Road for $36 million the biggest sale in the infamously expensive community in 2024 and close to an all-time Atherton record The developer was also behind the sale of another $30 million-plus Atherton build — 63 Santiago which sold for $32.4 million in October to Santiago Avenue LLC Pacific Peninsula Group did not respond to emails and calls for comment At both the Santiago and the Walsh properties the buyers’ agents and identities are unknown Pacific Peninsula Group bought a different 2-acre parcel of the Fisher estate for $15 million last year as well Permits to demolish the existing residence were approved before the property even closed escrow pool house and detached garage were approved in August SIGN UPMichael Repka of DeLeon Realty represented the seller on the Park Lane sale as well as the seller in a 2023 deal where Pacific Peninsula Group bought a 2.5-acre estate for $25 million and said the company understands the formula for building houses that ultra-luxury buyers want but they are also exceptional business men,” he said “They are consistently able to command a premium over builders that are less in touch with the market.” Sales like these “reset the ceiling” in the Atherton luxury market “Once you have a few high-priced sales of this nature it is easier to get others to fall into that price range,” he said Compass agent Omar Maissen, the co-listing agent on Atherton’s most expensive listing agreed that a few very high-end sales can help move the needle on the market because they help buyers feel like $30-plus-million prices are reasonable “Buyers seek the comfort of knowing they are not the first to the dance and this provides a great springboard to boost confidence in the market,” Maissen said of the recent Pacific Peninsula Group sales the Atherton market has seen a “dramatic uptick” in activity from international buyers in the ultra-high end This includes buyers from Hong Kong and mainland China though they typically already have a presence in Atherton and are looking for move-up properties Compass agent Tom LeMieux said the Peninsula had a relatively flat year overall in 2024 especially compared to the run-up in prices during the pandemic spurred by international buyers and the tech sector the only sale over $30 million in Atherton was the Park Lane sale “For some of these very choice areas or these larger lot opportunities or it does speak to the demand we have for that in our market recently,” LeMieux said Jan 9, 2025Atherton Bikes' latest Instagram post has the internet in a frenzy The post shows what looks to be the brand’s A200 DH bike The post surfaced after eagle-eyed fans spotted what looked to be a gearbox-equipped prototype in development The prototype seems to be named the A200.G which indicates the coming change to a gearbox and belt-driven drivetrain The suspicions were confirmed today when Atherton Bikes posted an image that shows a rider on a downhill bike sans traditional drivetrain with the caption “Something is missing?” with the comments section immediately praising the decision to incorporate a gearbox design The initial teaser for this bike was released a week ago on Instagram and it seems that the team has been working quickly to develop a rideable prototype which they have already begun testing for the upcoming season Does this platform qualify for the unclaimed 100K purse for winning a World Cup Race on a belt-driven bike We’ll just have to see if Charlie Hatton has his eyes on taking a belt drive to the top step of a World Cup podium The benefits of a belt-driven gearbox bike are pretty apparent and we have already seen this technology on other downhill bikes from Intense and Gamux and requires far less maintenance than traditional drivetrains It also allows more tuneable suspension characteristics around the sprung weight of the chassis but all these benefits and we still haven't seen them catch on Maybe this is the year we see a belt drive on the podium?  AustriaPhoto: Bartek Wolinski / Red Bull Content Pool Jan 6, 2025Andreas Kolb, who has been on the Atherton Racing team for the last four years announced this morning that he will not continue with the team in 2025 What’s next for Atherton Racing and the European DH National Champion with a post on Instagram giving appreciation for all the good Atherton Racing has provided him: “2021-2024 to getting back to back podiums and finally winning my first World Cup in Leogang Let’s also not forget finishing 1st and 2nd at Worlds with Charlie and all the good times we had,” The caption ended as most of these announcements do with Kolb expressing excitement for the future alluding to something big in the works for the European national champion “Definitely don’t wanna miss a single second Andreas is an accomplished freestyle skier, and that was his passion before he began downhill racing. One commenter even tagged the Freeride World Tour, suggesting this might be the next move, although that move to skiing full-time is doubtful; Kolb has been killing it on the twigs this winter and shared a clip of himself landing his first double-backflip Andreas's departure from Atherton Racing is a significant loss for the team. With the recent UCI rule change, Atherton Racing is losing Kolb's valuable UCI points from 2024. The Austrian is sitting in second place overall in the point ranking with 1067 points, just below Loic Bruni These UCI points are now required for a team to continue racing in the World Cup and It is unclear if Atherton Racing will sign someone to replace Kolb and his points the team is no longer in the top 15 and is left with just 578 UCI points they do not qualify to be given World Series Team status but Atherton Racing could still be awarded a Wild Card for the 2025 season thanks to another rule that will be implemented in 2025 is still sitting high in individual rankings which could allow him to race as a privateer but Atherton Racing would not be one of the World Cup-ranked teams.  We’re all excited to see what happens with Kolb in 2025 and the rumor mills are working overtime to speculate where he might land.
