Ellvie Smith says she’s always preferred to watch Food Network rather than cartoons
an 11-year-old from Attalla who loves to both bake and cook (they’re different disciplines)
13 of Food Network’s “Kids Baking Championship.”
It’s hosted and judged by famed baker and network personality Duff Goldman
a contemporary Southern cook from Charleston
This year’s theme is “Amazing Animals,” with the contestants tasked with preparing animal-themed cakes and treats
the title of “champion” and a feature story in Food Network Magazine
said she’d submitted an application for the show a couple of years ago
we got an email saying they wanted to talk to us further,” she said
and launched an audition process with casting producers
TV producers and network executives that Kori said was basically “interview and bake
And about two weeks before filming was to begin — in June in Los Angeles — she was notified that she’d made it
and she and her mom flew to the West Coast
They had to keep it secret until the official cast announcement was made by Food Network — something Kori said was difficult for a 10-year old (Ellvie’s age at the time of filming) — and they can’t reveal how the show turned out (there will be eliminations each week)
The other “Kids Baking Championship” contestants are Noah Azeez
“One of my favorite things was meeting all the kids from all over North America,” Ellvie said
One of my friends was from Canada and I did a project in school where I had to bake something from Canada
Her mom described the experience as “kind of surreal still,” adding
“I can’t imagine being 10 years old (Ellvie’s age at the time of filming) and having such a large dream and fulfilling that dream.”

“I’ve made my own birthday cakes since I was 6,” Ellvie said
my mom as used baking to help teach me fractions and math
I just got my baking passion and it grew from there.”
“I really like to do those big cakes that take a while to design.”
and photos of her work are on display on Instagram at EllvieBakes
“We try to put everything on there,” her mother said
“We spend a lot of time at Sam’s Club buying flour
Ellvie also had previous exposure to Food Network
her mom and a friend took her to New York for the network’s Food and Wine Festival
“I got to meet a lot of Food Network chefs (her favorites are Guy Fieri
and got to cook on stage (saffron risotto) with Rocco DeSpirito,” she said
Ellvie has taken online classes with the Institute of Culinary Education and classes with Itty Bitty Bakers
which offers culinary training for kids throughout Alabama
during the weekend before Christmas she co-taught a “Making Grinch Cookies” course in Trussville
with little sister Arbor as one of her students
which lives on a farm in Attalla with various animals including cats Mr
Ellvie said she also likes “to try lots of different food and visit different restaurants.” Her favorites include foie gras
“I would like to go to culinary school at Auburn
open my own bakery and if there’s time join the U.S
“I’m just really thankful for the opportunities God has given me,” he said
“and I’m excited to see where it leads me in the future.”
Derian Carden and her husband Tyler Carden celebrated the opening of The Chill Spot in Attalla last Friday
The high school sweethearts were joined by friends
customers and city leaders during the ribbon cutting ceremony Friday
“I just want to thank the Cardens for all that they are doing for the City of Attalla,” said Attalla Mayor Larry Means
We’re lucky to have them and we are very blessed to have so much going on in Attalla.”
The Cardens began their journey into restaurant owning by taking a mobile shaved ice shop around to various venues and events in Etowah County just over a year ago
The idea was they would have something fun to do on the side
make a little extra income and visit events that the family would have otherwise attended
and we were just thinking that it would be something fun to do,” Tyler said
“We could also make extra income while attending the events we already went to as a family
When I saw it posted but didn’t think much about it because at that time my wife was pregnant
Tyler said the shop kept popping up and that he treated that as a sign
“I kept seeing it and thought ‘let’s just go for it’ and we did,” he said
The renovations took about three months to complete
was instrumental in making sure the Cardens had everything they needed
“We could not have done it without him,” Tyler said
“We’ve had so much support from our family and friends as well
And everyone with the city has been so great to us.”
The Chill Spot is Family owned and operated shaved ice and ice cream shop located at 319 5th Ave
they will continue using the mobile station at events as well
The business is open Tuesday through Thursday from 11 a.m
Keep coming back and tell your friends and family to come by and support them.”
The couple graduated from Etowah High School and decided to stay in Attalla to raise their family in their hometown
to the family just a month before the opening of The Chill Spot
“In the middle of all of this we had a baby
which threw a beautiful wrench into the plans
It was a short stay for Attalla’s Ellvie Smith on Food Network’s “Kids Baking Championship: Amazing Animals,” but the young baker promised she’ll be on TV again
6 became the first contestant eliminated from the show’s 13th season
The bakers had two hours and 30 minutes to prepare a tart inspired by animals they picked at random
That was in line with this season’s animal focus — on “cuddly canines to intrepid insects and everything in between,” according to the introduction
Ellvie chose a betta fish — she noted to viewers that her mom
has one named Carl in her office — and prepared a Mango and Coconut Tart with blue dyed rice paper fins and a coconut cookie tail
(The tail was an added “twist” for contestants halfway through the competition.)
She survived one near-disaster when her original mango curd got scorched — “I didn’t stir around the edges,” she told viewers — and she had to quickly remake it
When Ellvie presented her offering to the judges
Duff Goldman said he saw the direction she was aiming at with the tart
“It’s really ‘watery,’ and looks very fluid,” he said
both Goldman and fellow judge Kandrea Brown noticed the dark crust
even though Elvie said she was hoping they wouldn’t
“If the crust had been a little thicker and (cooked for) less time
but everything is thin like a thin pizza.”
I wish it had a little more curd.” He said the sugar cookie tail was “great,” however

“I’m said to go home because I had lots of fun,” said Ellvie
who’s 11 but at the time of the filming last June in Los Angeles was 10
“I made some good friends that really support me.”
She got goodbye hugs from the other contestants and Brown
“This is just the beginning for you; you have so much to offer.”
“I’m going to keep baking and I’m going to be back on TV soon.”
with her Lime Tart with Swiss meringue buttercream scales and a peanut butter cookie tail
The runner-up was Piper Lowe of Kansas City
who picked a raccoon and prepared a Coffee Tart with cream cheese buttercream fur and a peanut butter shortbread tail
Other bakers had to mimic the textures of a bunny
The 10-episode show runs through March 3 and the winner will claim $25,000
