As the Broncos entered the final year of the 1980s and as a new decade approached
the franchise hoped to reverse its fortunes
Denver was only about a year removed from a Super Bowl appearance
falling to a .500 season in 1988 in which they ranked in the bottom half in scoring offense and defense
with less than a month before the 1989 NFL Draft
the Broncos had their eye on a future Pro Football Famer — but not in the draft
fresh off back-to-back first-team All-Pro seasons
was about to enter the NFL's "Plan B" free agency
Broncos head coach Dan Reeves and his staff hoped that they could bring in the young
dominant defensive playmaker as an antidote to the pass-rushing weakness that had allowed Doug Williams to pick them apart in Super Bowl XXII
too: "I'm looking forward to coming to Denver," he said
"I'd really like to get a new start in Denver."
Buffalo still had the ability to keep their rising star
was one of the players for whom the Bills chose to retain the right of first refusal; Buffalo would have the chance to match Denver's offer
the Broncos would have to compensate them for their loss with their first-round picks in the 1989 and 1990 NFL Drafts
matched the Broncos' contract and Smith went on to become the franchise's — and the NFL's — all-time leader in sacks
including the one that would help bring Steve Atwater to Denver
The Broncos' focus remained on defensive players
The general consensus was that the two top safeties were Atwater and Florida's Louis Oliver
The Broncos traded down from their spot at No
"I expected him to go in the first 10," Atwater later said
"When they got to 19 and I hadn't heard his name
Inside Broncos headquarters, there was a debate over the two players. Reeves later said they had rated the two players "side by side." To resolve the issue
he impressed upon new defensive coordinator Wade Phillips and defensive backs coach Charlie Waters for their thoughts
"That was a big discussion," Reeves said
"By taking into consideration instincts and leadership
\"Steve Atwater: The Road to Canton\" is a biographical sports documentary centered around legendary Broncos safety Steve Atwater
The \"Smiling Assassin\" shares his perspective of some of the key moments from throughout his career which eventually earned him a bronze bust in Canton

Louis and then all the way to the Hall of Fame
Atwater helps us relive his record-setting collegiate career at the University of Arkansas
the notorious hit on Christian Okoye and the back-to-back Super Bowl titles which he helped the Broncos bring to Denver
Atwater even gives us a glimpse into his life after football as a loving husband
father and a successful businessman before eventually rejoining the Broncos in a new role
\"Steve Atwater: The Road to Canton\" is a story about the perseverance it takes to ascend to the highest level of professional football
all while building relationships that define what it means to be a hall-of-fame person
the Broncos also relied on what they'd seen during the months leading up to the draft
Atwater had played in the East-West Shrine Game and been named the game's defensive player of the game after picking off two passes
"First thing is, Steve Atwater's a guy of extreme intelligence," Reed Johnson, then Denver's director of player personnel, told The Gazette’s Mike Burrows
We got that feeling when we scouted the East-West game
the guy just flat KO'd everybody that got in his way
And that's without anybody telling him what to do
even though Oliver can run a whole lot faster."
And how much faster was a matter of debate in itself
That kind of 4.37 speed can ensnare plenty of NFL decision-makers during the NFL Draft
but a Broncos scout named Ron Hill did what he could to make it as close as possible when he went to a workout at Arkansas to watch Atwater run a 40-yard dash
"He wasn't a speed guy. But he ran pretty good that day in Arkansas," Hill told The Gazette’s Paul Klee in 2021
I don't think he'd ever run a 4.6 before that."
that difference would probably still draw concerns
that's what it is when he's out there on the field with his pads on
Steve Atwater's hit on Christian Okoye comes in at No
Between the leadership traits, his quick comprehension and ability to change direction, the Broncos made up their mind and, as Burrows wrote
were "alarmingly infatuated with Atwater."
a great hitter with great judgment," Phillips told Burrows
"All I know is that Atwater is a football player and that we have to get him on the field
"We wanted size and hitting strength defensively
His feel for the game is just what we're looking for
He can play strong safety or free safety without any problem
however questionable at the time to outsiders
Atwater became a starter immediately and helped generate a remarkable shift on defense
Denver improved from 20th in scoring defense to first and last in rushing yards allowed per attempt to seventh as the Broncos marched back to the Super Bowl
Over his 10 years in Denver, Atwater racked up eight Pro Bowl selections, two first-team All-Pro nods and was a key part of the Broncos' back-to-back Super Bowl championship squads. In Super Bowl XXXII, which ESPN's Adam Schefter has called "the finest game that any safety in any Super Bowl ever has played," Atwater stuffed the stat sheet with six solo tackles
the Broncos accomplished exactly what they had set out to do when they prepared for the 1989 offseason
even if it wasn't how they originally planned it
They added a Pro Football Hall of Fame talent on defense and
they reshaped the Broncos' fortunes for the next decade

here's a look at several analysts' final projections for the Broncos' top selections
Any player that improves the Broncos' roster — and
reduces the pressure on Nix — can be viewed as a weapon
Payton and Paton have now worked a pair of drafts together
and there's plenty to dive into as the Broncos look to add more talent to their roster
"We think there is going to be a similar player at [No.] 10 that will be there at [No.] 20 in our grades," Paton said
"We have more players in that area than we do at [No.] 1 through [No.] 10
You just work your board and set your strategy based on that."

Ignoring rumors of a lingering knee injury
the Broncos drafted Randy Gradishar in the first round and found a Hall of Fame defensive centerpiece for the next decade
Denver currently holds seven picks in this year's draft

Atwater — who joined the Broncos as the 20th-overall pick in the 1989 NFL Draft — spent 10 seasons in Denver and was a member of the Broncos' Super Bowl XXXII and Super Bowl XXXIII championship teams
The Broncos Ring of Famer and eight-time Pro Bowler was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2020
and his election to the National High School Football Hall of Fame is the latest of a multitude of honors that highlight Atwater's legendary career
"They're nice accolades," Atwater told DenverBroncos.com on Thursday
"It's nice to be recognized for being good at something
and I know that that's only a part of the person that I am
they get a kick out of these types of things
Atwater played high school football at Lutheran North High School in St
where he was both a quarterback and safety and earned all-conference and Most Valuable Player honors
He then went on to play college football at Arkansas
where he played safety and was a two-time All-American
"Playing quarterback helped because they got a chance to see my tackling skills when I threw interceptions," Atwater said
I'd be flying down there upset that they intercepted my pass
but he's going to be all right at safety.'"
Atwater said the highlight of his high school football experience was not the skills he gained on the field
but the lifelong relationships he built that impacted the trajectory of both his career and life
"I have just great memories from practicing with all my buddies," Atwater said
ran track and played all our sports together as youngsters
My greatest memories were just remembering the times before practice
It's just great memories of some guys that I still love to this day
We felt that they not only were coaches but that they genuinely cared about us
Your coach not only cares about how you play
how your family is doing [and] all that good stuff
and I've still got great relationships with my coaches."
While Atwater was sidelined with a shoulder injury during his freshman year of high school
he made the most of his three years on the team as he prepared to play at the next level
Atwater recognizes the foundational knowledge those years provided and noted he was "extremely happy" to learn of the honor that acknowledged the hard work he put in all those years ago
"I started playing football when I was eight years old," Atwater said
there was just the carryover from youth football
It was just something that could get me away from all the other stuff that was going on."
The National High School Hall of Fame was founded in 2010 to "preserve the history and honor of high school football players
coaches and contributors" and "foster the growth of young talent and inspiring the next generation," according to the NHSHF
"You kind of wait your whole life to just hear you name called," Robinson said
I wanted to prove to myself that I could do it
I always had the confidence and the support behind me to know I could."

The Broncos have added to their edge rushing group on Day 3 of the 2025 NFL Draft
'Who does he remind [you of]?'" Payton said Friday

basketball felt like a dream job for Davis High’s Coleman Atwater
Atwater — with offers from the University of Chicago and Claremont McKenna College in California — takes the books seriously
But ask any Davis County resident and there’s little debate over where the 6-foot-3 shooting guard can be found after 3 p.m
“Basketball was the part I wanted to be at every single day,” Atwater said
“I was able to focus on other things during the day and build up whatever emotions I built up in the classroom or outside of basketball and then it was ‘I get to go to basketball today,’ not
Atwater and the Darts closed February with an eighth state championship — the second in Chad Sims’ 11 years as head coach — defeating 6A favorite and top seed Herriman 75-66 by trusting themselves as the more level-headed opponent through the final eight minutes
Atwater is the 2025 Standard-Examiner All-Area Boys Basketball Player of the Year
One of four seniors, Atwater was instrumental to Davis-Herriman becoming the hottest ticket in town on Feb. 27. All four seniors would certainly identify that 6A title contest, the raucous Huntsman Center and buildup to their season’s most-important game as their favorite memory
To truly appreciate the fruits of their labor
Sims veers the conversation to the preseason and just how consequential those weeks became
Sims meticulously chose his team’s early regular-season dates to make his group uncomfortable
The longtime coach wanted Davis to adhere to a tight preseason with small windows between tournaments and non-region opponents
we’re able to just relax and go play the game,” Sims said
With a host of guys capable of finding the rim
Sims wasn’t wasting time second-guessing the draw-up when shots didn’t fall
Sims tweak man-to-man matchups like flipping switches on a breaker box
studying the effects and recalling such patterns throughout an 11-2 start through the non-region slate
his teammates on trusting those adjustments without spending extra time in practice or the film room
Getting guys to trust and recognize those real-time changes on the court is where Atwater
made a difference during those early preseason dates
“It was a matter of defensive adjustments that would get us in a flow offensively,” Sims said
and then we’d come out with those defensive matchups and it would translate right over to the offense
we were getting a little bit of a flow and a rhythm.”
here’s who you’re guarding and you’re going to go out and make a play,'” Atwater said
“I trusted (Sims) that he’d make the right adjustments
he’d call the right plays and he’d have the right matchups out there.”
Davis entered the half behind or tied on eight occasions this season, including twice during the playoffs. Close contests or comebacks included Weber twice during the regular season and Layton twice, first avenging their third and final loss on Feb. 4, and again in the 6A semifinals
The back half of the schedule saw the Darts fall just once more
giving up a 23-point loss at Layton on Jan
which meant a share of Region 1 title honors
“I think it kind of grew on the other guys and they realized we’ve got a chance to win this,” Atwater said
“We’ve got to give it everything we’ve got

Someone like Atwater will become increasingly missed as Sims and Davis regroup for the 2025-26 campaign
But Atwater’s contributions will be remembered
“(Atwater) understood what we were trying to do,” Sims said
“Coleman and the seniors could execute on the floor and be the coach on the floor.”
Atwater will serve a two-year mission before narrowing his choice between Chicago and Claremont McKenna for basketball

Calif (FOX26) — We’re learning more about Isidro Chavez Gonzalez

several counts of assault with a deadly weapon
Silveira confirmed Gonzalez was recently released from prison just a few months ago

revealing new information about one of the attacks
Atwater Police told us Friday afternoon that three of the victims have been released from the hospital
The DA would not expand on the extent of the injuries but said the fact Gonzalez is charged with causing great bodily injury should give an idea of how severe the attacks were
"Our argument is that he presents an extreme danger to public safety,” Silveira said
including his place of residence or any possible mental health issues
and we’re going to do everything we can to secure justice in this case and keep the community safe,” she said

The third artistic director in the festival’s history
Darin Atwater comes to Monterey with a distinctively different background than his predecessors
The 67th edition of the Monterey Jazz Festival
features just what its loyal fans have come to expect: a star-studded mix of headliners
youth programs and a funky Saturday afternoon party
Miguel Zenon and Robert Glasper are on the bill
But longtime patrons will notice hints of some new directions
They come courtesy of Monterey’s new artistic director
who took the helm last fall after the retirement of Tim Jackson
Only the third artistic director in the festival’s history (San Francisco DJ Jimmy Lyons came first)
comes to Monterey with a distinctively different background than his predecessors
He is the first from the East Coast and also the first African American
composer and educator with a classical and gospel background
he is the founding artistic director of the Baltimore-based Soulful Symphony
which performs American music with an emphasis on African American experience
Atwater has served as composer in residence for the Baltimore Symphony
and his composition “Day Of Affirmation” was commissioned and performed by the Jazz Lincoln Center Orchestra
He also teaches American roots music at the Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University
“He’s a renaissance kind of guy,” says Lenora Helm
dean of professional education at Berklee College of Music
“He has his heart and mind and work in circles that overlap
as an academic leader and as a cultural arts programmer.”
Atwater says he has no intention of dramatically changing Monterey
He especially admires its tradition of commissioning new work and the commitment to jazz “baked into its constitution.”
“Most jazz festivals are no longer jazz festivals,” he notes
But just as Jackson brought his particular outlook to the festival
Atwater clearly intends to add his own touch to Monterey
this year’s schedule reflects his love of the human voice
Nearly two dozen singers and vocal ensembles share the bill
from Samara Joy and Mavis Staples to Lila Downs and Gabriella Cavassa
“I come out of the gospel choral tradition,” he explains
The American songbook is a vehicle for storytelling
Atwater has also significantly expanded the festival’s gospel component
The Monterey Peninsula Gospel Community Choir joins Texas Southern University Gospel Choir
on the Sunday morning program on at the newly named Tim Jackson Garden Stage
There is now a gospel program at the arena Sunday
featuring the inspirational Donald Lawrence and Company
When Monterey Jazz Festival Executive Director Colleen Bailey attended a celebration with him earlier this year at Houston’s Wesley AME Church
she was stunned by the reception he received
“All these famous gospel singers were there
He is a very well-known figure in the music industry
I think this is his West Coast opportunity.”
It’s also an opportunity for Atwater to show off East Coast acts Californians might not have seen before
One is Baltimore tenor saxophonist Tim Green
who has performed with Christian McBride; another is a D.C
North Carolina-based pianist Sean Mason is also a first-timer at Monterey this year
as is the soulful Pennsylvania singer Avery Sunshine
If you notice a healthy mix of genders in Atwater’s program
“We have to scrub ourselves of any blind-spot biases.”
Atwater also appears ready to take on the Monterey audience’s notorious resistance to change
particularly jazz-adjacent forms such as hip-hop
the crowd exited en masse when The Roots came on at the Jimmy Lyons Stage
Atwater has invited Baltimore-born hip-hop artist Mumu Fresh (Maimouna Youssef) to the big stage Saturday and the infectious New Orleans hip-hop group The Soul Rebels to the West End Stage
The West End Stage is also where curious listeners can soak up the sounds of Marquis Hill
“We want to inject the festival with as much new life as possible
build a bridge to the next generation,” Atwater affirms
There is one ingredient that old-timers might notice is missing from this year’s program: Monterey’s customarily fulsome nod to Bay Area musicians
Though San Francisco’s Christian Pepin & Orquesta Bembé is featured at the Pacific Jazz Café
a venue where Atwater hopes to reassert jazz’s oft-forgotten ties to dance
“That’s just my learning curve,” Atwater admits
Atwater will teach master classes in the festival’s ongoing collaboration with Historic Black Colleges and Universities — to date
Texas Southern University (sending its Gospel Choir) and North Carolina Central University (offering its Jazz Ensemble)
Atwater will also participate in Monterey Jazz Festival On Tour
which offers a revue to major cities around the country
who also will retain his position as artistic director of Soulful Symphony and continue to compose
“But I’m so honored to have the opportunity to take the baton.” DB
“This is one of the great gifts that Coltrane gave us — he gave us a key to the cosmos in this recording,” says John McLaughlin

DETROIT (WXYZ) — Everyone loves a little taste of their childhood
that taste of nostalgia comes from a fresh jar of Velvet Peanut Butter
starting as a production out of Paul Zuckerman's garage off 12th Street in 1937
"He was kind of obsessed with the idea that most of the peanut butter in the market wasn't very good
so he was pretty sure he could make a better kind of peanut butter," said Jon Milan
Paul was a good salesman and grew his little peanut butter into a national production
he solidified his rapport with the public by supplying U.S
It was a cheap and delicious source of protein
and that was a big deal during World War II selling peanut butter to you," said historian and author
Zuckerman sold the business and production was moved out of Michigan and into Georgia
the Detroit icon is set to make its return
purchased the peanut butter company on January 2 of this year
He told me he felt a connection with the original owner
started making peanut butter in his garage," said Rieth
Bringing this piece of local history home is more than just nostalgic for Rieth
He said it's part of his commitment to help Detroit thrive by bringing more job opportunities to the community
"It's all about being a part of the Detroit community
And this is going to be another avenue to be able to do that ..
we've always talked about that over the years," he said

Commercial buildings on a corner lot in Atwater Village are slated to give way to affordable housing using the Mayor's Executive Directive 1, according to a new application unearthed via ATC
calls for the construction of a new six-story edifice featuring 92 studio and one-bedroom apartments with parking for 21 vehicles
the project is eligible for density bonus incentives permitting a larger structure than allowed by zoning rules
Sammie Tabrizi is designing the proposed project
which is depicted in plans as a contemporary podium-type building
The project site is located just east of the Los Angeles River, and north across the 2 Freeway from the site of the Wylden apartments, an under-construction 370-unit development from Fairfield Residential.

and long-forgotten Philly delicaciesAtwater Kent staffers scoured the archives for delicious (and disgusting) recipes
The Atwater Kent Collection’s holiday potluck on Monday involved Log Cabin pecan pie
the dish no one was eager to eat but everyone wanted to discuss
was the “chicken jelly” — a gelatinous loaf featuring bits of chicken
It tastes like chicken soup,” said Michael Shepherd
Some offices host cookie swaps or catered lunches during the holidays. At Atwater Kent, a repository of roughly 130,000 objects related to Philadelphia history that is managed by Drexel University
staffers this year threw a potluck in which every dish came from a recipe in its archival collection
There were thousands of options to choose from
and pamphlets distributed by companies to help sell their products (United Fruit
advised cooks to incorporate bananas into every dish in a 1950s cookbook)
Upstairs at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts’ Hamilton Building
the staff introduced their creations and toasted
Then they drank sparkling grape juice out of red plastic cups and ate ancient recipes off paper plates
The chicken jelly recipe came from a pamphlet distributed by Colburn’s
a company based in Philadelphia that imported and manufactured spices and sold seasonings all over the city in the early 1900s
The sparse recipe: “Cut the fowl as for fricassee
take out the chicken and chop it into small pieces …” There were no measurements or time limits; Shepherd bought a rotisserie chicken from Acme and proceeded from there
so it is not clear if it contained the chain’s greatest hits
The rescued box also included recipes from individuals; ARA
the company now known as Aramark; and General Foods
Kraut made ARA’s version of “chocolate candy cookies,” a no-bake fudge-like concoction drawn from an industrial-scale June 1967 recipe that called for 1.5 pounds of sugar
inspired by a General Foods recipe also salvaged from the dump
baked a pecan pie from the Log Cabin Syrup Co.
using another industrial-scale recipe that incorporates both corn syrup and Log Cabin syrup
Before the concept of “food science” took off in the 1930s
many published recipes instructed people to basically “cook until done,” Kraut said
Some staffers are already planning for the next potluck
Maybe they will prepare a ham and pineapple spread
Collections assistant Piper Burnett suggested a World War II-themed meal
The talk then turned to modern-day recipes
Torres said she had recently cooked a TikTok-famous fried sandwich
somebody in a special collection is going to say
‘I’m going to do the historic TikTok recipe for the Spam ramen fried sandwich,’” Kraut said
