Auburn Hills police officers responded to the Target on Brown Road at around 6 p.m. on March 18 for a report of a suspicious note left on a person’s car. They read the note and found it to be sexually explicit. Police said the victim who received the note is under 18 years old. The note had a phone number on it, so police communicated with the suspect by phone. Police said the communication was also sexually explicit in nature. The officers learned the suspect was still inside a car in the Target parking lot. They found Thomas Mellick Hensler, a 38-year-old man from Clarkston, in the car. As he was being taken into custody, police found suspected methamphetamine. Hensler was charged with child sexually abusive activity, using a computer to commit a crime and possession of a controlled substance. His bond was set at $25,000 cash or surety. If bond is posted, he is ordered to wear a GPS tether and is prohibited from returning to the Target at Auburn Hills or have unsupervised contact with anyone under 18. He is expected to return to court on March 27, 2025. Copyright 2025 by WDIV ClickOnDetroit - All rights reserved. so loud he’d have to leave his courtside seat and find a back hallway to give his ears a break “There was no arena that was more deafening than the Palace in those years,” Tellem said “I felt like I was going to have a heart attack I had to leave because it felt like my chest was going to cave in.”  Playoff basketball returned to the region after a six-year break and during the three games Little Caesars Arena hosted in the Detroit Pistons first-round series against the New York Knicks who sat with Tellem — his former agent — and Rip Hamilton — his former teammate — during Game 6 “It was the first time that felt like the good old days.”  No. 1: Top moments in Palace of Auburn Hills history Hamilton, the former Pistons shooting guard, said the atmosphere as Cade Cunningham and Co pushed the Knicks to the brink made him want to get on the court for the first time since he retired a decade ago and to see them out there in full force?” said Tellem “That's what we hoped for when we moved the team downtown.”  Some will always swear by the Palace and its throaty But when the Pistons made their fourth-quarter run in Game 6 on May 1 and seized the lead with a few minutes to go reminiscent of the building that housed the last great era of the franchise Tell a story on one side of a room and it’ll end up a different story on the other side of the room the city buzzed the past couple of weeks as these young Pistons competed And whether you prefer the sloped sightlines of the Palace or the steep angles of LCA the new joint offers something the Palace never could:  A more central focal point. Also: accessibility, which is why Tellem helped lead the move from Auburn Hills to downtown Detroit ahead of the 2017-18 season, 40 years after the Pistons first moved to the suburbs to play in the Silverdome in Pontiac MITCH ALBOM: Pistons elimination hurts like hell – and that's what will make them better Detroit may or may not be the best sports town in the country Yet it’s unquestionably near the top of the list The easiest way to tap into that fervor is to give everyone a reasonably similar chance to get to the arena And unlike so many cities home to major professional sports teams Detroit’s downtown is cut off to the south by another country “I really felt when I got here that the team needed to be in Detroit for a lot reasons,” said Tellem, who was hired by owner Tom Gores in 2015 to join the front office and help run the business operations “We wanted to be part of Detroit’s rebirth And we couldn’t be all in on it if we remained in the Palace.”  the Pistons were the only major team here playing outside the city’s core Gores and Tellem loved the dedication of the fans who made the trek to the Palace but they wanted to make it easier for everyone to attend a game Take a walk around the concourse and the faces of the community are represented from every corner in ways they weren’t at the Palace; LCA looks like our region And for a sport that attracts fans from every kind of background “That's the beauty of playing in downtown Detroit,” said Tellem fewer of us gather when the teams are losing and for much of the eight-year history of LCA nights like Game 6 were hard to imagine .. All the losing acted as a kind of amnesiac for what spring can feel like when the basketball team is rolling something the franchise hasn’t been in almost a generation and John Mason belted out the names of the starters The crowd roared. And got louder from there and stayed mostly loud for the better part of three games, as the young Pistons fought and scrapped and kept coming back Tellem had to take the occasional break to protect his ears and gather his bearings “It was powerful and so emotional,” he said SOMEHOW, IT WORKED: The story of the Palace of Auburn Hills to the soundtrack of the way playoff hoops used to sound but he was doing it in a spot that makes more geographical and spiritual sense “Sports is at its best when it gives you hope and when it’s inclusive and everyone can participate,” said Tellem “It brings people of all backgrounds together we are all united in the love and support of our teams that’s the beauty of (the last three home games) Submit a letter to the editor at freep.com/letters Contact Shawn Windsor: swindsor@freepress.com. The announcement was made on Wednesday (Jan. 29). The automaker wants its employees to work three to five days a week starting March 3, 2025, while maintaining a flexible work environment. “As we accelerate our transformation, we recognize the value of consistent on-site presence and see it as a key enabler to win in the marketplace. Many of our teams are already working on-site 3-5 days a week as we maintain a flexible work environment. Today’s announcement is confirmation that bringing teams together to build stronger connections is a competitive necessity.” Employees at the Chrysler Headquarters and Technology Center complex in Auburn Hills who have already been working, including engineering and technology teams and assembly line workers, will continue working at their respective plants. Local 4 was told that employees received an email Wednesday evening regarding how 2025 was a pivotal year for the North America Communications organization as the company worked toward delivering commitments. The company said a more consistent on-site presence will be necessary to build stronger connections, unify teams, and achieve its objectives. The email expressed how essential it was to come together as one team: “As you may recall, we hosted our official grand reopening of CTC in September 2022. We understand that many of you are already working on-site in various capacities. For those of you who are consistently on-site three to five days per week, your on-site presence remains unchanged.” Stellantis said the purpose of the email was to allow employees to start planning their schedules. Leaders of the company will work with their respective teams to find the best on-site cadence while maintaining flexibility. “Additionally, we acknowledge that this change may require adjustments, and many of you will have questions regarding on-site arrangements and amenities. The company is committed to supporting you through this transition and providing helpful information. To ensure a smooth transition, please begin discussing your schedules with your teams and managers. We are confident that these changes will help strengthen our culture of collaboration and improve our collective performance. The use of hotels for people facing homelessness is a symptom of a lack of adequate long-term housing which he said would be a better use of taxpayer money than police responding to problems at the hotel "It seems like a lack of resources — it's not even countywide — statewide for these folks who are homeless or displaced and they're using our hotels as that Band-Aid for a larger issue," McGraw said A representative for Suburban Studios' owner told council members at a meeting in mid-February that the company wasn't aware that allowing people to stay longer than 90 days violated city code when it took over operating the hotel in 2023 But he told the council the hotel was willing to evict people to comply with the ordinance The council ultimately chose to give Suburban Studios an additional 120 days to come into compliance Kids Empowered founder Kimber Bishop-Yanke said the hotel began evicting guests staying past the city allowance right after the February meeting "It's something we do as a community benefit for homeless people," said Peter Joelson an attorney with Joelson Rosenberg representing the hotel's franchise owner "It's not a get-rich-quick scheme the hotel does to profiteer." Auburn Hills' decision to enforce its 2020 ordinance came to a head in mid-February when the City Council held a hearing about whether to revoke Suburban Studios' license because of violations of the city's length-of-stay ordinance the city's assistant director of community development described to council members a host of violations found through an inspection: a failure to document guests and the details of their stays; exceeding room occupancy limits; and safety problems such as open electrical outlets and doors not latching The police department logged more than 400 calls to the hotel between Jan not including calls recorded as traffic stops according to a log of calls for service obtained by The Detroit News Several dozen calls were recorded as welfare checks McGraw said he recalled a day when he heard two calls to the hotel over his radio within a half-hour period "It's a drain on our resources for sure," he said County officials and nonprofit leaders said homelessness inevitably spills into venues that aren't built to address it when there's a shortage of affordable housing and shelter space residents and families found some stability: walking to jobs and having a place where school buses could pick up their kids for school For local officials to "disrupt it and make them move is a hardship," said Bishop-Yanke with Kids Empowered "And these families are already in trauma." The way the federal government has determined people are eligible for government-funded homeless resources disqualifies them if they are paying for their own hotel rooms It doesn't help people who are paying for shelter but barely staying afloat but the bigger issue is there's no pathway to help people,” Bishop-Yanke said which Gagnon said received a notice about the ordinance violations at Suburban Studios saying Suburban Studios is an independently operated franchise A call requesting comment from the hotel's manager was not returned He was also not available when a reporter visited last week Auburn Hills City Council member Henry Knight said the city's 90-day ordinance is to ensure hotels are used for their intended purpose and not as a stand-in for long-term housing "We're not against the housing that you're doing as nonprofits and they're not long-term solutions to permanent housing," Knight said a professor at Oakland University's School of Health Sciences said some circumstances exacerbating homelessness in recent years have been mirrored across the United States such as rapidly rising rents after the pandemic and evictions resuming after a federal moratorium ended in mid-2021 But she said some others have been more specific to Oakland County including a capacity of a few hundred shelter beds for a population of nearly 1.3 million people and desirable schools that attract families who may otherwise struggle to afford the area's cost of living or maybe they will meet the needs of 10% of the population that is homeless," Lucarelli said And so we've got people that just are slipping through the cracks." said in late March she'd been calling at least 10 shelters across Metro Detroit every morning since she learned she'd no longer have a hotel room paid for But she said she heard the same answers each day: The shelters are full Davis said she's stayed in a shelter before when she first returned to Michigan after escaping an abusive relationship in Georgia But she didn't run into this much trouble finding a space before I don't even feel right; I don't feel like me," Davis said Local organizations that work with homeless people are working to create more beds the nonprofit Lighthouse announced a plan to expand its Pontiac shelter's capacity permanently from 30 to 150 beds another organization in Oakland County that works with the homeless said the group has 60 beds at its main shelter 12 additional floor mats and a 15-bed "recuperative" shelter for people leaving hospitalization He said HOPE Shelters also has rented about 21 motel rooms in the past Motel room rentals give "transition folks .. a little bit more independence," Wright said I just emphasize that we move the people who are already successful on a plan into those motels." Dave Woodward, the Oakland County board chair, said the county has already supported the construction of about 650 housing units since funding the Oakland Together Housing Trust Fund with federal pandemic recovery money "This is a chronic problem facing all corners of the country and the biggest concern is that we can't even build ourselves out of it fast enough to meet the need that we know exists out there," Woodward said Oakland County's neighborhood and housing development officer said about 1,000 new housing units have been developed in the county since 2023 The housing trust fund has financed 438 units dedicated to affordable housing A five-year Blueprint to End Homelessness released by Oakland County in 2021 which called for the creation of a housing trust fund said 41% of renters spent more than 30% of their income on rent A person earning minimum wage would have to work 65 hours per week to afford to rent a "modest" one-bedroom home Davis is trying to figure out her next steps Staying at a Marriott Residence Inn in Pontiac where she'd been paying $100 a night out of pocket after moving out of Suburban Studios at the end of February she faced more uncertainty after losing her job in March the cartoon "Bluey" played on a wall-mounted TV and she's been sleeping in the room's one bedroom Davis' two children sleep on the pull-out couch The Madison Heights home where Davis used to live had a big yard for her kids to play in But there was no room for toys in their hotel room She couldn't take them anywhere for activities because she doesn't have a car They have been struggling emotionally because they don't have the stability they need Davis dreams of returning to school and working in the criminal justice system Davis said she might want to become a judge "I think God is leading me towards the criminal justice system," Davis said I stand up for people that can't stand up for themselves or speak for themselves." Police responded to the Holiday Inn Express off Baldwin Road at around 10:45 p.m. on March 7 for a report of a possible domestic violence incident. When officers arrived at the scene, they heard two gunshots while approaching the room. When they entered, they found a 34-year-old woman and a 33-year-old man dead. They also found a 3-year-old girl unharmed. Police later identified the woman killed as Jackie Jo Torrez from Saginaw and the man as Marcus Isaiah Taylor from Vassar. The 3-year-old was taken to a hospital out of an abundance of caution and was then released to a family member. Submit a letter to the editor at freep.com/letters Here’s How Thoughtful Planning Made That Happen MI – The story of Downtown Auburn Hills is ultimately one of planning city leaders have been able to take a once overlooked area along the Clinton River and turn it into a city center supported with flourishing housing options and businesses that are a natural fit for this blossoming space The story of this transformation was told on Nov 19 to guests of the Auburn Hills Chamber of Commerce who gathered for a luncheon at Fountain Circle Apartments Economic Development Manager for the City of Auburn Hills The area of Squirrel Road and Auburn has been a place for people and production since the days of Native Americans who treasured the winding waterway once known at the Nottawassippi a Native American word meaning “like a rattlesnake.” In the early 1800s European settlers began building along what is now called The Clinton River named in 1824 after New York’s Governor DeWitt Clinton while just downriver the town of Auburn grew as well North of Pontiac and the town of Auburn was Pontiac Township In the 1820s mills were built along the river and the town grew around them The area where Downtown Auburn Hills now sits had several names over the years starting with the town of Auburn in 1821 In 1983 Auburn Heights and Pontiac Township combined to form the city of Auburn Hills including businesses tied to automotive production so did stress on the river and local environment they left behind empty buildings and environmentally challenged land officials set about determining their vision for reviving the area around the river It means that within the geographic boundaries of a TIF district taxes taxes on future real estate value increases are set aside to pay for investing in the improvement of that area it simply “captures” tax increases that would otherwise go to other taxing bodies such as the county and local school district TIF ensures that municipalities have money to invest in infrastructure improvements and services to encourage development though the money only flows in sync with the improvements made that increase values so growth tends to happen at slow and steady rate city leaders went through a strategic planning process They knew they had to work on changing zoning to help attract housing and diverse businesses to the area They also had to find ways to have contaminated sites brought up to environmental standards In some cases they purchased properties to rehabilitate before selling and in others they worked with developers using Brownfield incentives to help offset remediation costs for developers They also wanted to set the stage for a welcoming downtown by spending $11 million on roadway improvements and streetscaping and lighting to make it a more walkable area gradually adding in features like The Knight Amphitheater which hosts concerts and other events They also purchased the right of way land where a railroad used to be The Clinton River Trail connects across five communities With the framework of the Downtown area taking shape Auburn Hills was ready to start filling in the details In 2009 they contacted with Hyatt Palma consultants to create a strategic plan Residents and businesses took part in the conversations and surveys “It took time to really understand who we are and who we want to be,” Carroll said “This was the start of something special for us.” One of the very first recommendations was to call the area Downtown Auburn Hills By studying downtown development throughout Michigan and even the Main Street Oakland County programs and efforts locally they had a sense of what’s needed for success They used Hyatt Palma’s recommendations as a planning tool and guide to determine where to focus efforts going forward “We decided to put a priority on building residential to get people into the core area Through thoughtful planning and zoning we were able to work with developers to build various types of housing that would benefit current and future businesses,” she said including mixed-use buildings with housing on the upper floors and ground-level retail Auburn Hills has built up a community of mainly young professionals who value the convenience and amenities of apartment living and who enjoy access to the trails and nature that Downtown Auburn Hills has to offer Fountain Circle the apartment complex that hosted the presentation is a $20 million project built on a 16.4 acre site that used to house a steel plant Residents in over 250 apartments of varying sizes enjoy amenities like a clubhouse Across the street, a million dollar cleanup paved the way for The Jordan which has which offers 1-2 bedroom apartments above ground level retail The Brunswick building used to house a bowling alley Now it’s a four story 30,000 square foot building that not only has apartments but is also home of financial service firm Raymond James’ Auburn Hills office There’s also a co-working space where people can buy memberships and enjoy an office environment and amenities like high speed wireless and meeting rooms Parkways is another sizeable project that has been happening in phases The City acquired the property due to back taxes adding a variety of housing options in the community a new street was added – Parkways Blvd making it easy for residents to drive or walk to the downtown area Businesses have noticed the growing neighborhood “We love cutting ribbons,” Carroll said of all the grand openings she and her team have attended Michigan by the Bottle set the stage for outdoor seating in Downtown Auburn Hills “I get so excited every time I see people sitting on our sidewalks enjoying wine It’s such a change from how it was before,” Carroll said “Creating a space like this is exciting You want to see people out enjoying the downtown.” The most requested business in surveys was a Mexican restaurant a dream which finally came true earlier this year with the addition of Cantina El Dorado The Webster Apartments are nearing completion as is the creation of a public square where people can attend events or simply enjoy outside seating in the midst of this growing community Alo’s Sports Bar is opening soon and will feature both inside and patio season there are still opportunities for residents and businesses to be part of Downtown Auburn Hills Learn more at https://insideauburnhills.com At 7:50 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2025, Auburn Hills police were notified about a stabbing that had occurred in a bathroom at Avondale High School at 2800 Waukegan Street. The Auburn Hills Police School Resource Officer and high school security staff determined that a 16-year-old boy allegedly stabbed a 15-year-old boy with a small pocketknife during an altercation. The victim was taken to a local hospital by his parents, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and released. No other students were injured or involved in this altercation, according to police. The school was placed on a soft lockdown, and additional police officers were called to the school. Surveillance video showed that the 16-year-old suspect had left the school on foot at about 7:40 a.m., right after the stabbing. Authorities contacted the 16-year-old’s parents, who they say are cooperating with the investigation, and located the student at about 9:40 a.m. The 16-year-old was taken into custody and is currently lodged at the Oakland County Children’s Village Juvenile Detention Center. The case will be sent to the prosecutor’s office for review. Anyone with information about the stabbing is asked to contact the Auburn Hills Police Department at 248-370-9460. Authorities will not release the names of the students involved. Sara Powers joined WDIV as a digital content producer in Oct. 2024 and has been covering Metro Detroit news since 2021. Workers at the aquarium got to know the guitarfish and offered three possible name options: Dolly Parton, Diggy Smalls, and Greta. “We try to be a little bit creative,” Arndt said. “Dolly Parton, obviously, musician, guitar fish, that’s kind of where the connection came from. Diggy is like a shovel. They can often call it shovel nose guitar fish. That’s kind of where that one came from. And then Greta is another musician. So they’re all kind of somewhat related.” But they wanted your input, too! So Local 4 viewers sent in hundreds of other name suggestions, and we picked the most popular: Fender and Stevie Ray. Fender is inspired by the guitar brand, and Stevie Ray is pretty self-explanatory. So we‘ve got our five finalists, and now it’s time to choose a name! You can vote in the poll below. The guitarfish is 5 feet long and will eventually get to 8 feet when fully grown in 4-5 more years. The aquarium acquired her from its Minnesota branch. Now she just needs a name. Visitors who see the guitarfish, or shovelnose ray, don’t know what it is. I think it looks like a mix between a shark and a stingray. “Everyone‘s been really excited,” lead aquarist Amanda Arndt said. “A lot of people ask questions and don‘t know 100% know what she is because, as you said, it’s a very unique shape for an animal.” Since the fish has a unique, flattened front side, and a shark-like backside, many people think it looks like a guitar or a shovel. The one at SEA LIFE aquarium was born about four years ago in Minnesota. She was transferred to Detroit to live in a larger tank. “They start out maybe about a foot long, so she‘s grown a decent amount, but it‘ll still probably take her 4-5 more years before she’s close to full size,” Arndt said. Workers at SEA LIFE are keeping her on a strict diet to make sure she can live close to her longest-possible life span, which is around 30 years. Shrimp is among her favorite foods.
