(KKTV) - An Aurora woman was found guilty of attempting to defraud an insurance company after a car crash
according to the Office of the 18th Judicial District Attorney
The DA says an Amazon van crashed into 32-year-old Amanda Arneson’s parked Chevrolet Silverado in November 2021
along with additional money for a rental vehicle
The DA said Arneson submitted a “Diminished Value” claim for the truck
Amazon’s insurance carrier had a company appraise Arneson’s truck and reported a diminished value of $12,755
Amazon’s insurance carrier agreed to pay Arneson this amount based on the diminished value assessment
but the DA says Arneson declined and submitted a counter appraisal instead
Arneson reportedly submitted documentation to Amazon’s insurance company outlining the Inherent Diminished Value of $19,800
When Amazon’s insurance carrier connected with the appraiser Arneson had hired
the DA says they learned that the diminished value had been altered
and that the submitted documentation was false
the independent appraiser provided a copy of their report showing that they determined the diminished value was only $8,350
When the insurance carrier refused to pay any more than their initial offer
the DA says Arneson agreed to that amount and cashed the check
The documentation Arneson submitted was later turned over to authorities
Arneson was charged with two counts of insurance fraud
She was found guilty on all counts after a 3-day trial
Arneson’s sentencing is scheduled for June 27

who’s pregnant with her and husband Christian McCaffrey’s first baby
after she didn’t attend one of her baby showers last month
There’s a major fumble in the Culpo sisters’ communication
Aurora Culpo revealed that she and sister Olivia Culpo, 32—who’s expecting her first child with husband Christian McCaffrey—briefly bumped heads after she didn’t attend one of her latest baby showers
“Olivia [had] a “baby sprinkle” in Denver on the weekend of my birthday. And she was like, ‘Don’t worry about coming,’” Aurora explained on the May 4 episode of Gia Guidice’s Casual Chaos podcast

The 35-year-old—mom to Remi, 6, and Solei, 4, with ex-husband Michael Bortone—wasn’t offended by her sister’s suggestion, as she originally planned to sit out the smaller baby shower because she needed to rest. But once their other sister Sophia Culpo

“I just kept sending her the screenshot where she was like
Despite Olivia’s loaded response, Aurora and her younger sister are back on speaking terms. But that olive branch hasn’t been extended to Sophia, as the Model Squad star hasn’t spoken to her in “three weeks.”
While Sophie hasn’t publicly addressed her and Olivia’s feud
Aurora hopes her sisters will bury the hatchet soon
but I think she’s gonna get over it,” she continued of Olivia

The northern lights will likely be visible to several states along the Canadian border on Monday night
after recent geomagnetic storms made the phenomenon more visible
according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
Some minor to moderate radio blackouts are also expected this week
The NOAA forecast auroral activity with a Kp index of three on a scale of nine
meaning the northern lights will likely move farther from the poles and be “quite pleasing to look at” for anyone in the right areas
The Kp index may increase up to nearly four
which could make the northern lights visible in parts of South Dakota and Maine
There is a chance for some minor to moderate radio blackouts through Wednesday
indicating some high-frequency radio communications could be impacted

In over four years of supervised pilot hauls
the Aurora Driver has delivered over 10,000 customer loads across three million autonomous miles
last week launched a commercial self-driving trucking service in Texas
The deployment will provide autonomous freight transportation between Dallas and Houston
Aurora’s flagship product, the Aurora Driver, is an SAE Level 4 self-driving system that the company is first deploying in long-haul trucking
the Aurora Driver has completed more than 1,200 miles without a driver
This latest milestone is the first time that Aurora will operate a commercial self-driving service with heavy-duty trucks on public roads
“We founded Aurora to deliver the benefits of self-driving technology safely
we are the first company to successfully and safely operate a commercial driverless trucking service on public roads,” stated Chris Urmson
“Riding in the back seat for our inaugural trip was an honor of a lifetime – the Aurora Driver performed perfectly
Urmson, Sterling Anderson, and Drew Bagnell founded Aurora in 2017. The Pittsburgh-based company designed its Aurora Driver to operate with multiple vehicle types
from freight-hauling trucks to ride-hailing passenger vehicles
and detecting pedestrians in the dark hundreds of meters away
Aurora added that its Verifiable AI approach to autonomy blends learning models with “guardrails” to help ensure the rules of the road are followed
Verifiable AI also played a role in enabling Aurora to close its driverless safety case
Aurora’s launch trucks include the Aurora Driver hardware kit and redundant systems including braking
enabling them to safely operate without a human driver
The truck platform was validated and approved by Aurora for driverless operations on public roads
Aurora believes working with manufacturing partners is the only way to deploy self-driving trucks at scale, and continues to make progress with its partners on purpose-built driverless platforms designed for high-volume production. The company plans to share more details about its launch and ongoing commercial operations at its upcoming first-quarter business review
Aurora is working with industry leaders across the transportation ecosystem
The company said it hopes to expand its driverless service to El Paso
Aurora’s launch customers are Uber Freight
a market-leading enterprise technology company powering intelligent logistics
a veteran-owned carrier that delivers time- and temperature-sensitive freight
Both companies have had long-standing supervised commercial pilots with Aurora
Aurora also released a Driverless Safety Report
which included details about the Aurora Driver’s operating domain for initial operations along with its approach to cybersecurity
safety-focused approach to delivering autonomous technology has always given me confidence they’re doing this the right way,” said Richard Stocking
“Transforming an old school industry like trucking is never easy
but we can’t ignore the safety and efficiency benefits this technology can deliver
Autonomous trucks aren’t just going to help grow our business – they’re also going to give our drivers better lives by handling the lengthier and less desirable routes.”
Aurora said it prioritizes consistent transparency and collaboration with elected officials
Entities that were briefed on the Aurora Driver’s readiness for driverless operations included:
Trucking is a trillion-dollar industry in the U.S.
including an aging driver population with high turnover rates
making the value proposition of autonomy – a solution that will offer safe
reliable capacity without an impact on jobs – highly attractive to the trucking industry
states today allow for driverless vehicles
the industry has been slow to make progress
Through its partnership with Atlas Energy Solutions
the company said driverless trucks have surpassed 750 hours of commercial driverless operations without a human driver on board
it secured a firm commitment from Atlas to order an initial 100 trucks
Also in April, Gatik received a successful independent review for the Safety Case Evaluation and Functional Safety phases of its Safety Assessment Framework from TÜV SÜD
It claimed that this third-party assessment was the first of its kind and that it marks a significant milestone toward the commercialization of self-driving freight operations

IN) – An Aurora man turned himself in to the Dearborn County Law Enforcement Center on a warrant from Dearborn Circuit Court on April 29
Christopher Schwab is charged with five counts of Forgery
four counts of Fraud on a Financial Institution
and one count of Corrupt Business Influence
The charges stem from an Indiana State Police investigation that began last June
the owner of Claims Management Specialist had cashed three separate
three-party checks by allegedly forging signatures
also owned a roofing company named Over the Top Roofing
Dearborn County Prosecutor Lynn Deddens says Schwab’s alleged victims did not give him or his company permission to sign checks on their behalf
Other victims said they did not sign contracts granting Schwab permission to bill their insurance company
Schwab then allegedly took the three-party checks to various banks in attempt to deposit them in his account
He is also facing charges filed by Indiana Conservation Officers on April 30
Hunting with Aid of Motor Driven Conveyance
and Deer Hunt Outside Legal Hours (all misdemeanors)
and Level 6 felon Criminal Recklessness with a Deadly Weapon
Conservation officers say they received complaints form citizens about deer being shot and killed from a roadway in southern Dearborn County
Another complaint alleged that a homeowner was sitting on the back deck of its residence in Tall Oak Drive last September
and allegedly saw someone in a vehicle shooting from the car and killing a whitetail deer in his back yard
Investigators say after the animal was killed
It was reported that the person who shot the deer did not use a spotlight or flashlight to illuminate the deer before it was shot
and there was no loud “crack” sound similar to what a high-power rifle would make
There were other reports of deer being shot and killed in the Dutch Hollow area
A warrant for GPS data relating to the deer being shot from the roadway on September 24 allegedly placed Schwab’s cell phone in close proximity of where the deer was shot
Schwab appeared in Dearborn Superior Court II before Judge Sally McLaughlin for his initial hearing last Thursday
His pretrial hearing was originally scheduled for this morning but has been re-set for August 5
As Aurora approaches a potential fifth consecutive Suburban American softball championship — one win from clinching a share and two from making it outright — it's worth noting titles don't come easily
That was demonstrated once again in Aurora's 7-5 victory at Revere April 29
which was the Greenmen's sixth league victory by five runs or fewer
That triumph in Richfield might have been Aurora's toughest yet
as Revere scored three runs in the first inning and two in the third to take leads of 3-2 and 5-3
The Minutemen got their leadoff hitter on in three of the first five innings
And yet there they were at the end of a long stormy evening in Richfield
still undefeated in league play and pushing closer to another number on the banner
"Everyone's stepping to the plate with confidence," Aurora senior Sophie Retton said
"Everyone's in the field with confidence just because we worked hard in the offseason and I just think it's paying off for everyone and we're just having fun."
How Aurora softball weathered the stormConfidence proved critical in Richfield on an afternoon with no shortage of challenges
starting with the storm that hit just as the Greenmen were warming up
It was almost as if that storm carried into the game as Aurora made a number of uncharacteristic miscues in the bottom of the first
from yielding a leadoff walk to an error to multiple other close plays in the field the Greenmen didn't make that they typically do
"We kind of had a bit of a rough start with the rain and all that kind of delaying our warmups
but [the mindset] was always just come out and attack," Aurora senior Rayna Unverferth said
just focus on the future and do your best to make things happen."
the Greenmen had a golden opportunity with the top of their order — including five players with 100 career hits — coming to the plate
"It's just do anything you can to get on base
do anything you can to move the runners," Unverferth said
there's really no mindset except just do anything you can to get on base or make something happen."
Just get on board and get the assembly line churning
which is exactly what Unverferth did when she bounced back from a tough strike call on the first pitch to lash the next pitch up the middle
and I kind of noticed once she got that first strike
she usually came back with some type of strike," Unverferth said
"And she hadn't been pitching me really anything inside
pulling a couple of balls foul to stay alive before lining a low
outside pitch to the opposite field for another single
"I was just kind of anxious in that at-bat because I knew we needed baserunners
"But I saw I'll just try and hit whatever I could
with Bohanan following with a smash up the middle to draw Aurora within a run
Julia Miller later beat out a comebacker off the pitcher's glove as Bohanan came across the plate to tie the score
the game-winning run scored on a pitch to the backstop
there was the matter of silencing those Minutemen bats after they compiled five runs in the first three innings
Retton tore through the bottom of the order in the fourth
then benefitted from Petrash's resourcefulness in the fifth
Petrash raced in on a pop but couldn't quite get there in time
the senior second baseman had the instincts to quickly pick the ball up and fire to second for the force
I think about what I can do next to get an out
and so I'm just trying to read wherever I can," Petrash said
then Petrash calmly corralled a ball that ricocheted off Retton for a 1-4-3 putout to get out of one of the biggest jams of the afternoon
"I was just going to back up Ret," Petrash said
but I was luckily there for her to get that out
Aurora followed that hard-fought win with another against Highland the following day
After winning league titles each of the last four years
The Greenmen aren't taking anything for granted
as proven by Retton's reaction after she struck out the Minutemen's leadoff hitter on a beautiful pitch on the outer black to start the seventh
Unflappable and usually pretty quiet in the circle
"I just knew I was having a little bit of a tough game pitching
"Like I tell them before every time when we're out there
As the city of Aurora improves its infrastructure offerings to its current and future residents
there can be as many as 100 active work zones within the city
Please note: Although the city informs online mapping services about our road closures and designated detours/alternate routes
the routes they provide to the general traveling public are generally the shortest or quickest routes between two points
That results in drivers sometimes not following the city's designated detour/alternate routes
detours will remain in place on n-bound Gun Club Rd through the pm rush hour & into the evening for work at this site
so detours will be in effect from 8:30am-mid afternoon
NOAA’s three-day forecast also states there may be periods of minor geomagnetic storms Sunday night
The northern lights become visible due to geomagnetic activity that causes ions to collide with Earth’s atmospheric gases
NOAA’s forecast shows the northern lights may be visible in Alaska
NOAA recommends getting to an area with an unobstructed
north-facing view away from bright city lights
The aurora is typically most visible between 10 p.m
which is when geomagnetic activity tends to be highest
turn on night mode and reduce your shutter speed to capture the movement of the lights

11:52am EDTShareSaveCommentThe Northern Lights appear in the sky during a geomagnetic storm on October 10
which is predicting geomagnetic activity that could result in aurora being glimpsed in as many as 11 U.S
states have a chance of seeing the aurora on the northern horizon on Sunday night
with Alaska and those on the U.S.-Canada border having the highest chance
Areas far from light pollution are likely to get the best views
If your smartphone has a “Night Mode” feature
that should be good enough to get a more than impressive souvenir shot of the aurora
It likely means a long exposure of between five and 10 seconds
which will look much better if you do three things:
exciting them and causing them to release energy as light
Geomagnetic storms and aurora are expected to continue through 2025 and 2026
Culpo discusses her belief that Frankel played a role in her split from Paul Bernon last summer
and the influencer describes the major argument that caused a rift
leaving her and her sisters Olivia and Sophia estranged
Aurora Culpo never intended to talk openly and so directly about her short relationship with Bethenny Frankel’s ex-fiance Paul Bernon
Appearing on the latest episode of Gia Giudice’s Casual Chaos podcast
the Culpo Sisters star began to unpack what went wrong in the short relationship
which she says Bernon ended with a phone call last July
While she has nothing negative to say about her ex
Culpo did admit that she felt like she was spending the whole time they were together “waiting” for something that just wasn’t coming
“He’s a nice guy and he’s [a] very responsible
that was something that I wanted,” she said
“But there really was never a huge spark.”
She said she “didn’t have that head over heels feeling.” Instead
she thought of Bernon as more like a “nice prospect,” so she decided to “give it a shot for a couple of months.”
The couple’s romance sparked shortly after Bernon and Frankel ended their own six-year romance
they first connected when his team reached out about a possible podcast collaboration
But while they clearly enjoyed their time together
What Culpo didn’t expect was for Frankel to be the one to not only out their short relationship
but also announce that they’d broken up
which she did on her Just B podcast in July 2024
What Culpo found “interesting” about Frankel’s action
according to Monday’s podcast appearance
was the fact “she knew nothing about our relationship
she speculated that Frankel was “butthurt” over her ex’s new romance after seeing Culpo post about it on her social media
At the same time Culpo can’t understand why Frankel would even have listened to her podcast
if she knew about her and Bernon being a couple
“I would not listen to the podcast of my ex-boyfriend’s new girlfriend,” she said
“Do I want to hurt my own feelings?” she asked
She went on to say that she also believes that the sudden public scrutiny was a factor in Bernon’s decision to call it off
“He really didn’t like being in the public eye in a negative way,” Culpo asserted
“I think he kind of liked being in the public eye if they were saying nice things.”
“Not everyone has the grit to be shown in a light they don’t have full control over,” she added
“He ended up using that he didn’t like that I talked about him on my podcast,” even though she did so without naming names
But she thinks there was more to it than that
“It was really because Bethenny called him and was just telling him that she thought it was petty that I would talk about him on my podcast,” she suspected
“And then she went on her podcast and was like
‘Paul broke up with Aurora because of her misdeeds of talking about him on her podcast.'”
Don’t talk about who you’re dating in a public way because you know the ex-girlfriend could be listening.'”
Culpo wasn’t having this “lesson” narrative
you show the people that you’re dating.”
While Bernon was the one who ultimately pulled the plug on the relationship
Culpo has determined that she’s kind of grateful that he did
“I didn’t want to be the one to have to break up with him
Culpo previously opened up about their relationship on her own Barely Filtered podcast in July 2024
shortly after Frankel outed the whole thing
where she said she’d realized she and Bernon weren’t “compatible,” noting that she wants more kids
and their “different” communication styles
with her ex-husband Michael “Mikey” Bortone
while Bernon has two teenage daughters from a previous relationship
Kids were apparently a tangential factor in another breakup in the family
as Aurora shared elsewhere in the podcast that her sisters Olivia and Sophia aren’t talking right now after a fight over a baby shower
She called it one of their biggest fights and it all went down “a couple weeks ago” over Olivia’s baby shower
Aurora explained that her sister was planning a full baby shower in Rhode Island
but a “baby sprinkle in Denver the week of my birthday,” which is April 4
Aurora explained that this was an event being put on by Olivia’s mother-in-law
because she and a “bunch of her friends” were going to be in Denver at the time
“She literally texted me on Wednesday,” Aurora said of her sister
Don’t worry about coming to this little thing.'”
really small and she told me I didn’t have to come,” Aurora said
and so she texted Olivia the following day and confirmed that she would
not be attending the “baby sprinkle.” The problem came when their other sister Sophia also canceled
you do nothing for me,'” Aurora recalled
has a complex about thinking she does everything for everybody.”
She said that she “kept sending her the screenshot where she was like
‘You don’t have to come.'” And she said that while progress has been made
and she and Olivia have spoken since the “sprinkle” blowup
It’s been like three weeks,” Aurora said
“I think she’s gonna get over it,” she added
she really needs to because she’s gonna have a baby soon and then she’s gonna want some help.”

A group of states along the Canadian border may have an opportunity to see the northern lights on Friday
with some radio blackouts expected through the weekend
Some radio blackouts are also possible through the weekend
The NOAA forecast auroral activity with a Kp index of four on a scale of nine
suggesting the northern lights will be visible farther away from the poles and be “quite pleasing to look at” for observers in the right areas
It’s likely the northern lights will be as visible through Sunday
with a maximum Kp index of three forecast for Saturday and Sunday
Some minor to strong radio blackouts are possible through the weekend as well
as some high-frequency radio communications may be disrupted as there’s a chance for solar flares
Upper Michigan and Maine have a low chance of seeing the northern lights
Most of Alaska and northern Canada will have a higher likelihood of viewing the phenomenon
The northern lights are best seen between 10 p.m
high vantage point away from light pollution
photography experts told National Geographic a wide-angle lens
an F-stop or aperture of four or less and a focus set to the furthest possible setting are best to capture the northern lights
disabling flash and lowering the shutter speed
A peak for northern lights displays was reached in October 2024
as activity on the sun’s surface achieved a “solar maximum,” NASA and NOAA said
This peak was reached months after NASA said the strongest geomagnetic storm in two decades impacted Earth
bringing aurora borealis as far south as Texas and northern Florida
Aurora borealis is the product of electrons from solar events—solar flares and coronal mass ejections—interacting with molecules of oxygen and nitrogen in Earth’s atmosphere
These electrons become “excited” before releasing the swirling lights of the aurora
A peak in activity on the sun’s surface will likely persist into early 2026
as the northern lights continue to be more visible to more people
Less than a year ago, the northern lights amazed Florida residents
sending colors swirling through the southern sky
Floridians were treated to the awe-inspiring sight on May 10
the northern lights were visible farther south than normal Tuesday
and they'll be visible again for some residents tonight
Unfortunately, they won't be visible as far south as they were in 2024
so Florida residents will have to rely on online sources
Still want to head outside for a little skygazing? Go ahead. While they won't be at their peak — that won't happen until April 21-22 — you might be able to see the Lyrid meteor shower.
Northern lights visible tonight in some areas of USA powerful solar storm has sent particles flowing from the sun that are interacting with Earth's magnetosphere in ways that are triggering the northern lights
Eruptions on the sun over the weekend sent clouds of the particles toward Earth
The storm also means views of green and red in the sky that are more widely visible than usual
A handful of states were able to see the northern lights Tuesday night
Will the northern lights be visible in Florida
What states will be able to see the aurora borealis?Unfortunately
Florida is nowhere close to the "viewline" where the northern lights will be visible tonight
the auroras became widely visible April 15
A thin red "viewline" representing the southern-most locations where you might see the aurora borealis on the northern horizon extends to:
WyomingSouth DakotaIowaMichiganNew YorkVermontNew HampshireMainePeople using long-exposure photography might capture images of the lights
even where they are not visible to the naked eye
Even though conditions are prime for more impending aurora shows, experts have long struggled to accurately forecast exactly when and where the phenomenon will ever occur
Even the best predictions can accurately be made only a few days or even hours in advance
As a rule of thumb, if the weather is clear, the best view of the aurora borealis is usually within an hour or two of midnight, according to NOAA

A spectacular and rare sight was visible across Florida on May 10
The aurora borealis, or northern lights
left many watchers in awe as pink and purple hues painted the night sky
➤ See photos of northern lights in Florida as aurora borealis visible in night sky in 2024
"I’m truly in awe that I’m seeing the Northern Lights in FLORIDA! Just… incredible," David Reese posted on X from Tallahassee at the time
Reactions posted on social media ranged from "absolutely insane" to "this is amazing."
Strong solar flares discharged from the sun caused northern lights to be visible across much of the U.S
Though rare, Florida has seen northern lights before 2024.
In 1989, the aurora borealis appeared on the First Coast was visible in a red glow tinged with pale green and white streaks
Northern lights were visible as far as South Florida in 1981
though reports indicate they were much less impressive
Then there was the Carrington Event of 1859 tinting the sky bright red and green which may have been the most powerful solar flare on record
An increase in solar activity has more frequently fueled "space weather" that produces the right conditions for northern lights to flourish
Regions of intense magnetic activity known as sunspots are proliferating on the solar surface and are capable of releasing intense bursts of radiation resulting in solar flares that can hurtle toward Earth at the speed of light, according to NOAA
Some of the flares can be accompanied by coronal mass ejections
Those ejections can collide with Earth’s magnetosphere to produce geomagnetic storms that unleash spectacular views of the northern lights in parts of the country where auroras are not often visible.
NASA expects conditions to continue into 2025, bringing more opportunities to catch the northern lights.

the company’s autonomous trucks are finally hauling freight
by Andrew J. Hawkins
The company’s Class 8 trucks are now making customer deliveries between Dallas and Houston
having already completed 1,200 miles “without a driver,” Aurora said
The clients for these initial trips are Uber Freight
the ridehailing company’s trucking brokerage
a carrier that delivers time- and temperature-sensitive freight
Aurora CEO Chris Urmson said he rode in the backseat during the first truck’s inaugural ride
which he called “the honor of a lifetime.”
we are the first company to successfully and safely operate a commercial driverless trucking service on public roads.”
Aurora said it plans to expand its driverless service to El Paso and Phoenix by the end of 2025
Founded in 2017 by alumni of Uber, Tesla, and Waymo, Aurora had planned to deploy its fully autonomous trucks in 2024. But those plans got delayed until this year
with the company continuing to tweak its autonomous system for surface-street driving and construction sites
Aurora says its technology presents a possible solution to the challenges currently facing the trucking industry
and increasingly expensive operating costs
The company says its system can address these specific problems
while also reducing labor costs and heightening safety on the highway
The need to start charging customers for deliveries is evident if you look at Aurora’s earnings. In its most recent report, the company reported a net loss of $748 million for 2024, down from $796 million the previous year. While the loss decreased, Aurora’s revenue estimates have declined. Aurora expects to report its first quarter earnings on May 8th.

The next time you spot a long-haul truck on the I-45
crane your neck to see if there's anyone in the driver's seat
The Pittsburgh-based autonomous vehicle tech startup has just launched its self-driving trucking service in Texas
starting with deliveries between Dallas and Houston
The company's driverless tech suite has already covered more than 1,200 miles (1,930 km) on public roads
Aurora is the first company on the planet to commercially operate self-driving heavy-duty trucks
which offers on-demand logistics solutions
a carrier focused on time- and temperature-sensitive deliveries
Here's what it looks like going down the highway between Dallas and Houston from inside a driverless truck with Aurora tech on board
“Riding in the back seat for our inaugural trip was an honor of a lifetime – the Aurora Driver performed perfectly and it’s a moment I’ll never forget,” noted Chris Urmson
Urmson is referring to an integrated suite of more than two dozen LiDAR
and an onboard computer to make sense of all the incoming sensor data on a truck
Aurora says this Level 4 autonomous setup "provides comprehensive awareness and attentiveness to changing road conditions."
it claims that its proprietary LiDAR tech can see more than 1,476 ft (450 m) ahead
and spot pedestrians up to 11 seconds sooner than human drivers at highway speeds at night
Aurora says it can also detect and allow aggressive drivers to pass its trucks safely
and slow down to change lanes and avoid parked emergency vehicles
The Aurora Driver system can integrate with OEM trucks
and the company has already partnered with Volvo and PACCAR (which makes trucks with Kenworth and Peterbilt badges) to bake its hardware and software into their freight vehicles
That's a big step forward for the Pennsylvanian startup
and potentially the start of a seismic shift for the trucking industry at large
This launch was pretty much on schedule as per Aurora's previous forecasts
The company also hopes to enable more capabilities like driving at night and in rainy weather
and operating on more lanes along the US Interstate system
One thing that stuck out to me in Aurora's press release is that it claimed its tech would not impact jobs in the industry, and linked to a 2021 report from the US Department of Transportation on the Macroeconomic Impacts of Automated Driving Systems in Long-Haul Trucking (PDF)
the report states that while automation will naturally lead to a decrease in the number of jobs for long-haul truck drivers
you'll need to consider that this tech will be adopted gradually and not all across the industry overnight
the number of jobs disappearing each year is expected to be less than the number of drivers who leave the profession through natural turnover
long-haul drivers whose jobs are affected should be able to find employment as short-haul truck drivers (whose jobs can't yet be automated as easily owing to more challenging routes and conditions)
the overall US economy is projected to see an increase in total employment due to broader productivity gains resulting from the automation
It will require a sharper mind than mine to conclude if the math will math
Aurora is set to reveal its Q1 earnings on May 8
at which point it will also share more details about how its self-driving program will expand – and how the current trade war will affect its business going forward

Aurora Innovation deployed its first driverless truck on Sunday
In an announcement released on Thursday, May 1
Aurora said it had successfully launched its commercial self-driving trucking service in Texas
The first run was conducted on Interstate 45 between Dallas and Houston
there was no “safety driver” in the driver’s seat
Aurora Chief Executive Officer Chris Urmson was seated in the back for the initial run
the company had already logged more than 1,200 driverless miles as of Thursday morning
quickly and broadly,” Urmson said in a news release
we are the first company to successfully and safely operate a commercial driverless trucking service on public roads
Riding in the back seat for our inaugural trip was an honor of a lifetime – the Aurora Driver performed perfectly
Securities and Exchange Commission regulations
Aurora did not publicly announce its first driverless run in advance
the company said it briefed the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
Texas Department of Motor Vehicles and local law enforcement in Texas about the readiness of its driverless operations
Uber Freight and Hirschbach Motor Lines were reportedly among Aurora’s first customers
Aurora said it plans to expand driverless operations to El Paso
In December 2024, FMCSA denied Aurora’s request to exempt autonomous trucks from a regulation regarding the placement of warning devices
Current regulations require drivers of commercial motor vehicles stopped on the shoulder of a highway to place warning triangles in a certain manner
Aurora President Ossa Fisher wrote in a blog post that the exemption denial would not prevent the company from complying with existing regulations when its driverless trucks were deployed
Aurora declined requests from Land Line to specify how it would comply
Aurora also did not respond to Land Line’s questions on Thursday
Although Urmson was on board for the initial run
it is unclear if a person has been in the truck for all subsequent trips
FMCSA said on Thursday morning that it was working on a response to Land Line’s question about compliance
The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association said that much more needs to be done to prove that 80,000-pound trucks with no driver are safe for public roads
“Road users are understandably very concerned about Aurora unleashing driverless trucks on public roads,” OOIDA President Todd Spencer said
“While the company has shared a voluntary safety report with test results and computer simulations
OOIDA doesn’t believe that’s enough to prove these trucks are ready for real-world driving
One example is ‘phantom braking,’ when a driverless truck suddenly stops for no reason – which can be extremely dangerous for anyone on the road
enforceable safety and cybersecurity standards
it’s too soon to tell the public that 80,000-pound vehicles with nobody behind the wheel are safe
before these vehicles are allowed on our roads.” LL

covers transportation's futureFollow AuthorMay 01
04:49pm EDTShareSaveCommentAurora self-driving truck plies the freeways of Texas
which dropped as much as 6% in an up market
Aurora had promised they would begin service in April
as well as executives from Uber ATG and Tesla Autopilot
and absorbed Uber ATG after a tragedy ended its operations
moving a class-8 semi-truck in real commercial operation is significant
Such a truck at 70mph and 80,000lbs has over fifty times the damage causing kinetic energy of a 40mph Waymo robotaxi
While Waymos have had crashes--and all vehicles will have crashes--the resulting consequences have been minor
(Waymo also released today new safety statistics showing they have been causing far fewer crashes than human drivers.) A crash with a 40-ton semi-truck can easily have very serious consequences
and Aurora has to work very hard to prevent that
One way to prevent it is to drive the relatively simple conditions of a Texas freeway
though Aurora plans to operate in more complex environments
It drives non-freeway roads from the off-ramp to a depot as well
Waymo and all other robotaxi operators have resisted carrying passengers on the freeway out of the same fear
though Waymo has for some time been operating empty vehicles and vehicles carrying employees as passengers on the freeways
and damaging cargo has manageable costs--the big risk is to other road users
Aurora has now completed about 1,200 miles with driver-out (a little more than 2 round-trips) but reports 10,000 loads and 3 million miles with safety drivers (and some interventions
as they have described in safety reports over the last few years.) They will haul loads for Uber Freight
and the first load was with Hirschbach Motor Lines
Automated freight presents a different value proposition from robotaxis
The latter promise to rewrite the rules of personal transportation and how our lives and cities work
Automated freight’s benefits are mostly for shippers
The 4th point has raised the ire of the Teamsters
who currently are sponsoring a law in Colorado
to require a human (ideally a Teamster) in the vehicle
(Satirists have wondered why not also mandate somebody to shovel coal into the engine.) While many have sympathy for the threat to jobs
few other jobs (other than medical doctor) cause so many deaths
at present there is a significant shortage of available truck drivers
so it will be quite some time before self-driving trucks threaten careers
though they do plan to alter economics much sooner
Aurora’s trucks will not drive in high winds or heavy rain
or presumably snow on its rare arrivals in Texas
Aurora trucks also have a system for remote monitoring and remote assistance
If Aurora is like any other self-driving company
(Aurora did not respond in time to a query about this.) The remote monitors presumably have an ability to command the vehicle to pull over into “minimum risk condition” or even emergency stop
The remote assistance operators can’t drive the trucks remotely
but can give them commands about pulling over
Aurora stated that though Urmson was in the back seat
This means Aurora must have disabled the normal systems such as the “big red button” emergency kill switch
and systems which disengage the vehicle if anybody grabs the wheel or presses the brake that are normally found in self-driving test vehicles
Only Tesla has stated that if and when they deploy their robotaxis in public
that they will be driving “unsupervised,” ie
without humans (remote or in the vehicle) who can intervene.
