A new tenant is already ready to takeover the former Pisolino space
Even though Tutore Italian Cooking School, which opened in April 2023 in Avondale
the owners have decided to close the operation this summer
Co-owner Dean Zanella says he wants to spend more time with his family
There’s no exact closing date, but Zanella says Tutore will exit by the end of June to give the new operator time to set up shop by July 1. Zanella, a veteran Chicago chef who’s worked at 312 Chicago and Rhapsody, among other restaurants, opened Tutore two years ago with chef James De Marte. De Marte’s old restaurant, Pisolino
had survived the pandemic by transforming from a full-service restaurant to a market with sandwiches to-go
but De Marte wasn’t as excited about the day-to-day grind
especially with road construction near Belmont and Elston slowing foot traffic
So De Marte and Zanella opened Tutore in the Pisolino space at 2755 W
Pastry chef Mollie Mettelka would also join the team
showing Chicagoans there’s more to the cuisine than red sauce Italian-American fare
it appears Tutore was a success: “My accountant asks if we’re printing money,” he says
The classes were packed on the weekend, and chefs, like John Manion of Brasero and El Che
frequently collaborated with the school to show their kitchen expertise
the work-life balance wasn’t what he had hoped
Zanella says it wasn’t fair to De Marte and Mettelka when he would ask them to cover for him on weekends
Zanella suggests that fans keep an eye on Tutore’s website and Instagram page in the next few months for flash sales on products and last-second classes
Though Zanella and De Marte are moving on to new ventures

CINCINNATI — A man pleaded guilty to killing four people in 2020 in Hamilton County Court on Friday
Alto Miles was accused of the deaths of William Bowen III, 28; Michael Eves, 47; Briggett Carter, 56 and Tasia Mason, 35.
Investigators said Miles shot and killed the four victims at two separate crime scenes in April 2020
Police found Bowen and Eves shot to death in the early morning on Reading Road near Glenwood Avenue
while Carter and Mason were discovered dead inside an apartment on Clinton Springs Avenue about an hour and a half later
then-Prosecutor Joe Deters sought the death penalty for Miles
he told investigators he would have continued killing if they had not stopped him
a judge ruled that Miles would no longer face the death penalty after a doctor determined he suffers from schizoaffective disorder
a mental health condition that qualifies under Ohio law to have a death penalty sentencing dismissed
a tumultuous courtroom scene erupted when Miles yelled in court and refused to accept his new guilty plea
His attorney announced he was retracting Miles' former plea of not guilty and changing it to guilty on four counts of aggravated murder
Miles yelled about shooting and stabbing people before confronting the judge
The judge stated that Miles could not "knowingly and voluntarily plead guilty to the charges he's been indicted with," leading to the rescheduling of the hearing
Miles was sentenced to 36 to 40 years in prison
Darter Fest is back for its 12th Annual celebration at Avondale Brewing Company this Sunday
This celebration aims to increase awareness of the Watercress Darter
If you’ve never heard of the Watercress Darter
chances are you’ve never seen it either
the darter is extremely endangered due to its limited distribution and specific habitat requirements
The festival will help support watershed education programs for local schools and STEM programs
Alabama Environmental Council has partnered with Avondale Brewing Company to increase awareness and support for this tiny fish that is a catalyst for the restoration of Birmingham Springs
“After Birmingham-Southern College closed
the Alabama Environmental Council (AEC) graciously allowed our center to house its grant programs at the AEC
and so that’s been really beneficial
because it means that we can continue our Birmingham watershed program
AEC has also facilitated the search and raising some funds to undertake a search for a new location for the center to be housed.”
“The proceeds from from Darter Fest help support watershed STEM programs in local schools
and we’ve got great artists that will be participating and offering face painting and art
The little darter has left a lasting impression on many nature-lovers here in The Magic City.”

An Arizona man and his attorney claim that security lapses at a mental health hospital allowed him to be vulnerable to a brutal attack by another patient in an intake room
Court records show the attack occurred inside the Copper Springs Behavioral Health Hospital in Avondale
ABC15 is not naming the victim at his request because he is the victim of the crime
"I never thought any of this could ever happen," the victim told ABC15 on Wednesday
Roberto Cuauhtemoc Lopez walked into a room where the victim was
repeatedly beat the man in the head with a clipboard and then sexually assaulted him
"This guy could’ve taken that pen and stabbed me in the neck," the victim told ABC15
"he felt like God wanted him to do it." He's now in jail facing five felony charges
said the facility is partly to blame for his client's injuries
Damoui said there were multiple security lapses
"They clearly failed on so many levels," Damoui said
"Having voluntary patients with mandated patients
allowing them to be able to gain access to one another."
Damoui said there was also a security camera recording the assault in the room
but he said it took approximately 15 minutes for staff to notice something was wrong and intervene
ABC15 is committed to finding the answers you need and holding those accountable

Copper Springs Arizona Market CEO Jessica Black sent ABC15 a statement saying:
Copper Springs is committed to protecting the health
and dignity of all of those who enter our doors
and we are horrified and deeply saddened by this attack on our patient
We have worked closely with the local authorities investigating this incident and will continue to cooperate with them as they need us
"I think the facility should be held fully accountable," the victim told ABC15
"I think the people who were responsible should be let go and be fired."
the victim said he was taken by paramedics to a West Valley emergency room
he had the courage to seek mental health treatment from a different provider
"I’ve told my counselor that I found the key
and I’m opening up a box," the victim said
the victim said he still wanted to encourage other people in crisis to seek mental health care
Copper Springs has two behavioral health facilities in the Valley

The city of Cincinnati says a new statue of Martin Luther King Jr
And it wants your photos to help finish the memorial
Javarious Jackson has been leading the project for the City Manager's Office
He says the centerpiece of the memorial will be a 6-and-a-half-foot tall bronze statue of Dr
It'll be surrounded by six pillars representing the tenets of nonviolence King practiced
"If you've ever been into a Southern Baptist church with the beautiful murals and the stained glass windows
that's what we're trying to emulate in this statue," he says
The memorial replaces one built in 1987 and removed in 2017 as work happened on the I-71 interchange
Houston-based RE:site designed the memorial
Jackson says the city expects to break ground soon and finish the memorial in spring 2026
the city is teaming up with the Cincinnati and Hamilton County Public Library to gather photos depicting the city's connections with Dr
The Holloman Center for Social Justice in Avondale will hold a photo scanning event from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 26. There's also an online submission form
City of Cincinnati Department of City Engagement and Planning's Eunique Avery says it's a way for residents to highlight their personal connections with King's legacy
"Anything you may have at home you think could really bring and shed light on the unique historical nature that Cincinnati has as it relates to Civil Rights and social justice
we invite you to come out and share those with us."

Hundreds of community members gathered to watch the ribbon cutting of The Country Meat Co
Eager shoppers lined up to fill the store on Reading Road
representing hope and excitement for a fresh start in a neighborhood that has struggled with access to quality food
Watch below to see how big the opening day crowd was:
Owner Tennell Bryant said the project was the most meaningful he’s experienced
The neighborhood has been without a full-service grocer since Aldi closed in 2008
“The whole food desert has come to an end,” Bryant said
“This particular project was for the community.”
The Country Meat Co. Marketplace stands as a result of years of planning and community involvement.
Reggie Harris spoke to WCPO about the idea for a grocery store as construction was underway at the Avondale Town Center
Harris was the community life senior manager at The Community Builders
He would later serve on Cincinnati's city council
“We see this absolutely as a promise that we need to fulfill and that is a part of our vision,” Harris said at the time
city council approved $250,000 for the store in its Capital Project Reserve from the previous year’s carryover budget
council member Jeff Cramerding said it was to “get them over the top to open.”
Harris said the owners are “making it look easy
“This crowd has to be here every day,” he said
Wynn was one of the first customers to enter the store
and I'm hoping that every time I drive past
Part of the business plan for the store is to make it more than just a place to pick up groceries but also a community hub

A 15-year-old Avondale High School student was stabbed and wounded during a fight Tuesday with a schoolmate
Auburn Hills police said in a post on X at about 9 a.m
that they were called to Avondale High School for a report of an assault
The school was placed on lockdown and the two teen males involved in the fight had been identified
Police were notified of the incident at about 7:50 a.m.
they said in a statement issued Tuesday afternoon
Officials said the fight happened in one of the school's bathrooms and the 16-year-old stabbed the younger boy with a small pocketknife
Officials said a 15-year-old boy suffered minor
non-life-threatening injuries in the fight and his family took him to the hospital
Authorities said he was treated and released after initially refusing to let medics take him to the hospital
Investigators said school security cameras showed his suspected assailant
was seen leaving the campus at about 7:40 a.m
Officers later located the suspect's parents
They arrested the suspect at about 9:40 a.m
and took him to the Oakland County Children's Village Detention Center to await a decision on charges from the county prosecutor's office
Authorities said they are not releasing either the names or photographs of the victim or suspect because they are minors
Officials also said no others were injured and the fight appeared to be an isolated incident
Anyone with information about the incident should call the Auburn Hills Police Department at (248) 370-9460
Avondale School District officials confirmed the fight happened at the high school on Tuesday
"An altercation occurred in a high school bathroom
resulting in one student being injured and the other exiting the building," the statement said
"This prompted an immediate soft lockdown on both Avondale High School and Auburn Elementary campuses."
The lockdown was lifted on both campuses after school and local authorities cleared them
"The perpetrator has been apprehended and is in police custody," officials said
"There is no further evidence of a threat to any building or students within the district
"The soft lockdown was implemented due to an isolated incident between two students
One student is receiving treatment for minor injuries
The safety of all students and staff is our top priority
The district takes every incident seriously and will always follow established safety and security protocols."
In November, the Detroit News reported the number of student fights at Michigan high schools has been rising
prompting some districts to implement shelter-in-place protocols that usually were reserved for threats of gun violence

Lattie Coor School in Avondale saw an increase in students' literacy rates thanks to their Literacy Hub
a supplemental reading program that launched in the 2022-23 school year and is as much for parents as it is for students
“Gone are the days where parents were separate from the school,” said Principal Geovanni Orozco
“We know that a child comes with a family.”
part of the Avondale Elementary School District
had 77% of students in the 2023-24 school year meet or exceed benchmarks under the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills assessment
a widely used method to determine literacy skills among kindergartners to eighth graders
thirty-seven students whose abilities were far below expectations for the DIBELS assessment participated in the Literacy Hub
83% of those students met or exceeded expectations
“It's all new and different from when I was a child and learning,” said parent Isabel Garcia
whose family has worked with the Literacy Hub
Garcia struggled to help her older kids with their learning materials because she was unfamiliar with the curriculum
and I'm gonna miss it once he's done with first grade," Garcia said of her kindergartner
The Literacy Hub was created with Valley of the Sun United Way to help more students become proficient in reading by the third grade
which serves kindergarten and first grade students
was approached to build a Literacy Hub because the district already had existing literacy partners
Read Better Be Better and Make Way For Books
Three of five third-grade students are not proficient in reading for their grade level based on the Arizona Academic Standards Assessment
the statewide achievement test for third- to eighth-grade students
Education: Mesa Public Schools' pronoun proposal met with opposition from transgender students
we're reading to learn,” said Valley of the Sun United Way Community Development and Engagement Director Dawn Gerundo
“If you don't have those strong foundational skills
Third-grade students who aren’t reading at their grade level by the end of the year are four times more likely to drop out, according to Valley of the Sun United Way.
The Literacy Hub aims to address low literacy rates among students with evidence-based solutions such as one-to-one tutoring
using existing curriculum within schools and thirty minutes of reading practice twice a week
The Literacy Hub engages both students and parentsStudents participating in the Literacy Hub meet with their parents at the end of the school day before the kids split off into smaller groups based on grade and reading level
read aloud and sound out individual letters with a handful of students
The teacher-to-student ratio is lower than a standard classroom
allowing instructors more freedom to offer individual help
such as when a student is stuck on a particular word or letter
“Working in the small groups is a big help because it takes out a lot of that extra pressure of all the other students,” said Literacy Hub Coordinator Emily Emhardt
and they're not comparing themselves to the others that are at different levels.”
Parents are not just waiting for their kids to finish their additional instruction during this time; they are actively learning and reviewing the same material as their kids with an instructor
When students and parents reconvene for the final 15 minutes of the day
they can practice together and ask questions
Parents participating in the Literacy Hub also learn how their kids will be tested and what the tests will cover
I use a lot of my own experiences and what I went through with my own kids
and I use it when I'm teaching the parents,” said the district's administrator for academic achievement among homeless youth
Tovar leads the instruction in both English and Spanish for parents
She explains jargon that parents might encounter when preparing for standardized testing
so they can better understand what students should expect
and it shows in the students' test scores,” Tovar said
The learning material is broken down into essential sounds and individual letters
making it accessible to both parents and students who don’t speak English as their primary language
and I was showing him in a way that was very different,” said Mariaelena Duarte of her son Ehitan
who would become overwhelmed when practicing timed reading tests
Duarte learned that DIBELS assessment scores were based on the total number of words read
and helped divert Ehitan’s focus away when stuck on individual words to instead move on and complete as much as possible for a higher score
Arizona schools: How districts are responding to Trump administration's DEI crackdown
Lattie Coor has all teachers within the school participate in the Literacy Hub so parents “do not see a separation and they just see it as an extension of Lattie Coor,” said Orozco
Incoming parents are invited by the school to join
and existing parents are sent announcements and reminders via an app that parents use to stay connected to the school
Tovar said that the biggest attractor for the Literacy Hub is word-of-mouth because “parents listen to parents." Once parents start to see the benefits and resources provided
she believes more families naturally follow suit
Lattie Coor avoided making the Literacy Hub a year-long commitment as it might be intimidating for families
the program is broken into quarters and students "graduate" at the end of each session
with parents usually coming back for the next quarter or school year
The Literacy Hub makes it a point to let parents know the importance of attendance and how quickly a student can fall behind because of school absences
Teachers and administrators find that involvement with the Literacy Hub has increased students' overall attendance
The Literacy Hub also serves as a resource center for families
Students can check out materials to practice at home
and GED books and ESL courses are available for parents
a nonprofit health care provider with several clinics in the Valley
to teach parents about medical terms and how to read prescriptions
The Hub also looks to teach parents about financial literacy and other roadblocks that might be impacting their child’s learning
“If our families don't know how they're going to be able to pay their bill
there's a good chance that they're gonna be more worried about that than sitting down playing and reading with their child,” said United Way's Gerundo
These additional resources are intended to help parents spend less time worrying about their day-to-day
and spend more time practicing with their kids
The Literacy Hub has become a “safe space” for parents where they “can get the resources they need without being looked down on," Tovar said
and it trickles down to how they participate in class."

When it comes to The Country Meat Co. Marketplace
husband-and-wife team Tennel and Chanel Bryant lead with intention
While they didn’t plan to hold their grand opening on the same day as a nationwide economic blackout on corporate businesses
Tennel says opening during Black History Month was on purpose—to be part of history
A community that had been a food desert for 16 years has Greater Cincinnati’s first full-scale Black and independently owned grocery store located inside of the Avondale Town Center
brand aligns with the Bryant family’s intent to deliver the best possible product
And because customers already associate the brand with the family’s butcher shop at Findlay Market
when people think of “country,” they think of “freshness.” “We want people to realize
people always think of ‘country,’ ‘farm-fed,’ ‘great quality,’ not that processed stuff,” he adds
the impact of the store’s February 28 grand opening was immeasurable
“They told me that we were beyond blessed and that we were superheroes for bringing a store to Avondale where no one else would do it,” Tennel explains
“When everyone else turned their back on Avondale’s community
You can duck in and grab a beverage from the coffee and smoothie bar or pick up a bouquet of fresh flowers
which come from a local Black-owned florist
Beautiful produce and locally sourced meats will excite home cooks
patrons can enjoy meals and cocktails on the patio
Tennel describes it as an inviting mix of contemporary and traditional textures
“We wanted it to be this store we could pick up and put in any neighborhood,” Chanel says
She adds that they wanted it to feel upscale without making customers feel like prices would be out of reach
prices haven’t kept people away because the couple is busy replenishing what’s been sold
Chanel was on the phone with a vendor reordering coffee and cups that were out of stock
“Everything has to be restocked,” Tennel says
At the annual Neighborhood Summit last month
Cincinnati City Council Vice Mayor Jan-Michele Lemon Kearney presented the Bryants with a community award
she mentioned how there were so many people at the store when she went two days in a row that she didn’t get to shop
remained open an extra hour during their opening and urged the city to continue that energy and keep going back
The store’s long-awaited rollout took about three years to complete
“Some of the challenges were funding,” Chanel explains
things that kind of went haywire when we were getting ready to open on the construction end and equipment end
and then just trying to just make it be perfect.”
And because they were set on opening a store that aligns with their brand promise of quality
Tennel recalls the people who told him his vision was too broad
It wasn’t unfinished “white box” construction
which Tennel says is often the way new stores look in underserved urban communities
and you could just give ’em a white box and walk away.’”
Early skepticism may stem from distrust that Black businesses could survive in Avondale Town Center
which is centered in a historic community that’s overcome decades of setbacks
Among them was white and Jewish flight in the 1950s
and the ever present stigmatization from crime
Strategies toward revitalizing Avondale date back to 1971
With its sights on building the city’s first Black-owned shopping center
the Reading-Rockdale Cluster Development Plan envisioned a commercial hub with a barbershop
Avondale Town Center broke ground with the backing of former NBA MVP Oscar Robertson and his Cincinnati Royals teammate
When the shopping center opened a year later
things looked hopeful as stores like Payless ShoeSource
and a Black-owned bank moved into the 40,000-square-foot mini mall
and Lucien Garrett—all of whom were Black—owned the IGA
When the IGA closed the first time in 1986
Kenneth Blackwell told the Cincinnati Enquirer that Garrett and Jackson had been victims of high interest rates
the store reopened months later under white ownership
who owned the Race Street IGA location in Over-the-Rhine
City leaders and residents demanded they hire a Black manager and ramp up security
Aldi’s served the neighborhood until it closed in 2008
a void that impacted residents without transportation
This history of comings and goings is why the community is rooting for the Bryants to succeed
Surrounded by other Black-owned businesses
is part of Avondale’s $46 million mixed-use development that includes casual dining choices like Zola’s and Saturday Morning Vibes Cereal Bar as well as a laundromat
The vibrant 78,000-square-foot complex gives Cincinnatians a myriad of reasons to visit Avondale
and the Bryants are happy to be one of them
Tennel remembers his late grandfather’s advice: Keep the faith
“And despite all the naysayers telling me to walk away
History was made and now the train is just now getting started.”
a 19-year-old Denver police cadet walked into Avondale Liquors across the highway from Empower Field

the store had applied to renew their liquor license with the Department of Excise and Licenses
But the citation that followed the underage sale was just another notch in the belt of a long history of criminal activity at the store — one that led to the loss of its liquor license this week

A security supervisor of a correctional facility in Phoenix who sexually abused an inmate was sentenced to more than a year in prison and 10 years of supervised release, the U.S. Department of Justice announced
pled guilty to sexually assaulting the woman inside her living quarters at the Behavioral Systems Southwest Residential Reentry Center
The Federal Bureau of Prisons contracts the center to offer reintegration services for inmates
helping them transition back to civilian life and avoid relapsing into criminal behavior
Murray Snow sentenced Hibbitt to a 13-month prison term
Hibbitt must undergo supervised release for 10 years and register as a sex offender
The prison sentence comes nearly two years after Hibbitt used his position as a security guard to compel the woman to engage in sexual activity while she was under his supervision
According to the woman's report to authorities
she was in her room on the afternoon of May 21
After he turned on the water and light in her room
he initiated sexual intercourse and later “compelled her to perform oral sex.”
Hibbitt pled guilty to sexual abuse of a ward on June 11
A sentencing hearing was initially set for Sept
Hibbitt’s attorney cited concerns that certain allegations against his client would escalate the penalties to several years of imprisonment
The attorney effectively asked the court to consider additional factors in the case that would affect the severity of the prison term
prosecutors recommended that Hibbitt serve 13 months in prison and five years of supervised release with the condition that he register as a sex offender
tacking on an additional five years of supervised release

Avondale Park got a little bit greener this Earth Week
Thanks to the Friends of Avondale Park, local partners and about three dozen volunteers from Regions Bank
the historic park will have by the end of the week the beginning of a new native plant garden and a natural erosion control bank that will improve the pond’s water quality
“Friends of Avondale Park is always looking for places where a committed group of volunteers can make a big difference
which we revived and is now over 100 years old
another committed group of volunteers that activate the park and create a great community in the park
We are always looking for opportunities and trying to solve problems.”
One problem the group seeks to solve is the soil erosion problem that starts at the hillsides near and around the historic amphitheater and ends in the park’s iconic pond
volunteers prepared beds for native plants by spreading topsoil
compost and mulch at the site of the new native plant garden behind the amphitheater and close to the pond
According to Michael Sznajderman with Friends of Avondale Park the gardens are strategically located in places to naturally slow down water flow
The native plants will also attract native bees
the group installed erosion control devices along the edge of the pond to support the bank and prevent runoff
They also planted wetland foliage that will act as a natural buffer
the two projects were made possible by the following groups:
Red Mountain School has committed to take care of the gardens
“We love to build communities within the park.”

(WVUE) - Federal investigators have launched a probe into the deadly explosion and fire that occurred in Avondale
claiming the life of 87-year-old Deloris Gabriel and injuring five others
which happened over an hour after a natural gas leak was reported down the street
has prompted questions about why evacuation orders were not issued before the blast
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) confirmed it has begun its investigation into the explosion
working closely with local authorities and utilities to gather information
The Department of Transportation’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) is also involved
according to Public Service Commissioner Eric Skrmetta
The investigation has a 90-day timeline to determine the cause and assess the response
“There doesn’t seem to be anything in close proximity to where the leak site was that was in immediate threat,” Skrmetta said
“You can say it’s an accident -- it’s an accident -- but that doesn’t really do anybody any comfort knowing the impact of these things.”
The explosion occurred in a neighborhood where Atmos Energy and local firefighters had already responded to a reported gas leak hours earlier
FOX 8 visited the Herbert Wallace Volunteer Fire House seeking answers about the crew’s response
Chief Thomas Berggren briefly addressed a reporter
stating he was not at the scene during the incident
“All we can say is that at this time it’s under investigation
we are not allowed to say anything,” Berggren said
He referred further inquiries to Jefferson Parish officials for details on first responders’ actions
FOX 8 reached out to Jefferson Parish spokespersons for clarification on gas leak protocols and the lack of an evacuation order
the parish directed questions to the utility company
“(Atmos) would be better to respond regarding gas leak evacuation procedures and protocols in place
Attempts to contact Atmos’s public affairs manager
Skrmetta said he is awaiting the conclusion of ongoing investigations to determine the cause of the fire and its potential connection to the gas leak
Skrmetta suggested that findings from the investigation could lead to changes in gas utility practices
“There are some questions about the issues
but we are going to wait and find out what the federal departments determine before we go any further,” Skrmetta said
While Jefferson Parish and Atmos have not responded to questions about their decision not to evacuate the area
officials in neighboring Orleans Parish shed light on standard protocols for handling gas leaks
sometimes once a month or once every other month,” said Collin Arnold
director of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness for the City of New Orleans
gas leak responses are typically coordinated between the utility and city officials
First responders and utility teams assess the situation using specialized equipment to measure gas levels in the air
“If it’s a high-pressure gas line and they feel like it’s a situation where an evacuation needs to occur
sometimes that’s only a block-or-two radius around the gas line,” Arnold said
The Avondale explosion has left the tight-knit community grieving and searching for answers

Wolfhound seems like a typical Chicago bar with TVs and ever-flowing beer, but it’s actually a bonafide Irish pub. Couples in the back split a full Irish breakfast (available all day) of tender bangers and rashers, while a solo reader at the bar can sip an expertly double-poured pint of Guinness
There’s usually a strong crowd of regulars any day of the week
but expect even more people sharing meaty black pudding pizza when there’s a rugby match on
or during their live music Tuesdays when fiddlers and pipers take over the front fireplace
7.5Chief O'Neill's Pub & RestaurantPub
For a more classic Chicago Irish pub experience head to Chief O’Neill’s. This decades-old neighborhood staple has old wooden church pews, historical photos, and enough Guinness memorabilia to rival an official brewery
There’s even a regal painting of the chief himself hanging above their fireplace—our favorite spot in the restaurant to eat fish and chips or a savory shepherd’s pie with fluffy mashed potatoes

Friendship Chinese is beckoning customers with free appetizers for life by partnering with a local tattoo parlor
Through Friday, April 17, Friendship Chinese restaurant in Avondale is offering customers a chance to earn free egg rolls and crab rangoon for life
The catch could be considered another perk; you have to get tattooed with the restaurant’s logo
Any hypothetical tattoos are free, part of a promotion with neighboring Legacy Tattoo to drum up business amid continued fallout from COVID-19 and heavy construction on Milwaukee Avenue
Restaurant owners have complained about the traffic and reduced parking options from the road work along the main commerce street for Logan Square
A post shared by Legacy Tattoo Chicago (@legacytattoochicago)
attempting to wax poetic about perfect wonton-to-filling ratios and other factors
Frankie Marron, community engagement and membership director for the Logan Square Chamber of Commerce
has been helping by managing social media for the promotion and responding to requests
Marron says the biggest challenge they’ve seen to businesses in Logan Square and Avondale is the ongoing construction of more bike lanes and a new park
“Last summer here on this side of Milwaukee
but now construction is on the other side of Milwaukee,” Marron says
As Block Club Chicago reported
the promotion has exceeded expectations as word spreads on social media
Legacy Tattoo owner Brian Clutter says that as of Thursday
they had more than 60 people who committed to ink
Ekinci chose the classic red and has been in love with it so far
which means “House of Friendship,” is originally in red
so I liked seeing the process of it unfold,” Ekinci explains
adding that she’s planning on incorporating flowers — perhaps Japanese blossoms for a cultural fusion aesthetic
“And I’ll go back to the same guy,” she laughs
Yuen left his New York City career in fashion marketing to help his sick father take care of the restaurant
Their original location was across the street
where the owners serve food inspired by their Mexican home state of Michoacán
They also ran a location for a brief time along Chicago’s lakefront
The family moved to Chicago from Hong Kong in the 1970s
but their immigration story started five generations ago
who he says “was one of those typical Chinese who came from China as a single man to work
and it took up to 50 days to reach Chicago from China
His great-grandfather ended up going back to China to remarry a younger woman
whom he brought on the boat to Seattle and then the train to Chicago
who took the same arduous journey back to China with her parents at 7 years old with her ailing father and her young mother
they made the journey from China to Chicago
Marron — whose grandfather immigrated from China to Mexico as an engineer to work on bridges — grew up in Logan Square and Avondale all his life and has vivid memories of going to Friendship Chinese
“I was telling Alan that I’ve been coming here since I was 7 years old
And I have a picture of me drinking the tea,” he says
adding that his favorite dish now is the Hong Kong-style Sidewalk Noodles with Garlic Shrimp
Yuen says he was thinking that when the program ends
they can do reunions for people who got the tattoo
That sense of community might be why Clutter and Yuen say so many of the people reaching out are having their very first tattoo be the Friendship Chinese logo
“It’s nice to have things that bring people together
We’ve had lots of forces trying to divide us for a long time
So it doesn’t hurt to try and remind ourselves that we should be together,” Clutter says
“It makes me excited when I think about some of the people that get the same tattoo
It’s like being part of a little community.”
People are looking for more ways to be together
especially after COVID-19 hit the restaurant industry hard
and greatly reduced the number of third spaces we have
It’s been over five years since the first lockdown orders were issued
and we’re still looking for ways to get closer
Marron adds he received a request from a married couple who had their first date at Friendship Chinese and wanted to get matching tattoos
And just as many like Ekinci are choosing the logo for their first tattoo
while others choose it for their fifth or 50th
“I had one person call and ask if they could get the tattoo a little smaller,” Yuen tells Clutter
“And when I asked him if there was a particular reason why
he said ‘Because I’m not sure if I have any more room on my body for more tattoos.”
Friendship Chinese crossed hit a major hurdle in November when the city’s health department closed them down “due to water back-up caused by an underground broken pipe,” Yuen says
It took them about a month to reopen and complete “extremely costly” repairs
Yuen says: “Since the only way to fix the problem was to open up the floor
I decided to open up the entire kitchen floor and install a new drainage system.”
and looking for new ways — like the promotion — to get customers in the door
JACKSONVILLE
– It’s often called a rare sighting that’s a sign of good luck when a white or albino squirrel is spotted
Natalie Samsonyuk and her fiancé Vasilli Isakov stumbled upon the uncommon occurrence a few days ago and captured video of an albino squirrel roaming about on Hershel Street
What were the chances of seeing it twice in a day?’ I had never seen anything like that
MORE | Tracking white squirrels: These rare animals appear to be living in at least 3 areas of Jacksonville
Wildlife experts said the unique squirrels are born with a genetic trait that causes the animal to have little or total lack of pigment. They consider albino squirrels rare because only 1 in 100,000 is born with the genetic trait.
Legend has it that if someone spots an albino squirrel, they will have good luck.
That may be true because Samsonyuk‘s fiancé, who is a sculptor, received good news about new sculpting projects the same day they saw the squirrel.
“We got two exciting projects. One in New York and one in Atlantic Beach. We will make sculptures featuring nature in Jacksonville,” Samsonyuk said.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – People who live in part of the Avondale neighborhood are asking drivers to be more careful when passing through.
The request comes after a truck crashed into a home on St. Johns Avenue. It happened around two in the morning on Saturday.
“It was surreal,” Aristide Pinto, whose parents live in the area, said. “It literally looked like a bomb went off and exploded the car into the house.”
Pinto, who is also a real estate agent, shared photos and videos of the wreckage with News4JAX.
In the photos, you can see a mangled truck, a damaged retention wall and a utility pole split in half.
A JEA spokesperson said 255 people were affected by this outage, but power was restored before 10 this morning.
The cause of the crash is still unknown, but Pinto said he’s seen many crashes on this road before.
“I’ve seen people speed on that road for the last five years of me being in Avondale,” Pinto said.
Pinto said he and his dad have reached out to the city as well as the Florida Department of Transportation to see if they could get solutions to slow down the fast drivers.
The dad shared his email thread between FDOT and News4JAX. At one point an FDOT worker replied they’ve “determined that all appropriate safety measures have already been installed.”
It’s not something Ari and his dad agree with, because they feel like more signage or speed bumps could be added to help slow drivers down before someone gets seriously injured or killed.
News4JAX reached out to the owner of the home, they told us they didn’t want to speak on camera.
We also reached out to JSO for comment and are still waiting to hear back.
When we reached out to FDOT for comment on this story they replied
“Portions of St. Johns Avenue are owned and maintained by FDOT, while other portions are owned by COJ. I am not aware of the details of the recent crash you mentioned and unsure if this crash is on a state roadway.
For information regarding the cause of the crash or other specifics, FDOT respectfully refers you to law enforcement, as the crash is likely still under investigation.
As with all crashes on FDOT roadways, FDOT evaluates the roadway once law enforcement has completed its investigation. This is standard operating procedure for the agency. If the crash involves a fatality, special emphasis is placed on the evaluation.
Regarding roadway evaluations, FDOT continuously reviews its infrastructure to ensure roadways meet safety and operational standards.
While I am not aware of a previous request for additional signage on St. Johns Avenue, I can confirm that FDOT designs and constructs roadways with safety as a top priority. I would have to get back to you during regular business hours regarding any specific requests.
However, the safest roadways rely on drivers, pedestrians, bicyclists, and all roadway users making responsible choices and safe decisions to ensure the roadway is safe for everyone.
Khalil Maycock joined the News4JAX team in November 2022 after reporting in Des Moines, IA.
